Liv golf's phil mickelson, caleb surratt raid pga tour caddie yard for two veterans, share this article.

pga tour media kit

LIV Golf’s Phil Mickelson and Caleb Surratt have dipped into the PGA Tour caddie ranks for not one but two regular caddies, sources tell Golfweek .

Mickelson announced on social media that his younger brother, Tim, who had served as his caddie for the past eight years including during the 2021 PGA Championship victory at Kiawah, has retired as his caddie . But he didn’t name a replacement. Golfweek has learned that veteran caddie Jon Yarbrough will be on the bag starting next week at the LIV Golf Miami event and the following week at the Masters.

Yarbrough, who has caddied for more than 20 years and for Scott Stallings for the past decade, won’t be on the bag for him this week at the Tour event in Houston. Yarbrough has previously caddied for the likes of Gary Woodland, Bill Haas, Smylie Kaufman and on the LPGA for Kelly Robbins, Morgan Pressel and Suzann Pettersen. Stallings, 39, made the Tour Championship in 2022 but is winless since the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open and has missed the cut in five of eight starts this season. Stallings is expected to have his swing coach on his bag this week. According to a source, Stallings and Yarbrough are very close, but the amount of guaranteed money offered “was incredible.” Reached via phone, Yarbrough declined to comment.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scott Stallings (@scottstallings)

That’s not the only LIV Golf caddie change. Caleb Surratt, who signed with LIV out of Tennessee earlier this year and joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII, has wooed Brian Dilley, another veteran Tour caddie, who had been on the bag of Akshay Bhatia, to take over for him. Dilley is tight with Adam Hayes, the caddie for Rahm, and likely had a role in linking Surratt and Dilley together.

“I’m still learning, growing, and working on everything that I’m beginning to see what I need as a player in order to grow and be able to compete to the highest level, and I think Brian Dilley‘s gonna be able to help me get to that point,” Surratt wrote via text of Dilley, who has worked with Aaron Wise, Billy Horschel, and the LPGA’s Gerina Piller, among others. “He has caddied at an extremely high-level for longer than I’ve been alive, and undoubtably will be a great set of eyes to have on my golf game. Everyone on my team around me, speaks very highly of him, and I’m very excited to get to work with him in the coming weeks. It’s been a very enjoyable ride so far, and I’m excited to keep learning myself, and learning professional golf game, and eventually grow to be one of the best players in the world.”

So, while the defections to LIV may have stopped for the time being as negotiations between the Tour and PIF linger , it hasn’t stopped the league from raiding the Tour caddie yard.

Stephan Jaeger of Germany hits out of a greenside bunker on the ninth hole during the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

While there wasn’t a collapse on Sunday like there was at The Players Championship the week before, it was still a frustrating week.

After Friday’s round at the Valspar Championship last week, the two biggest live favorites were Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover, who were both on my betting card.

They were paired together on Saturday and it was an absolute mess. They combined to shoot 8-over par and lost nearly 10 strokes putting between the two of them.

We’ll look to bounce back at this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open.

This will be the fourth time on the PGA Tour that the Memorial Park Golf Course has hosted an event, but only the first time it will serve as a host in the spring, as the previous three editions were all played in the fall.

There shouldn’t be a big change in how the course plays, but the greens have poa trivialis overseed this time of year rather than pure bermudagrass.

Measuring 7,430 yards, the course is a unique par-70 because it features three par-5s and three par-3s; most par-70 courses have two 5s and two 3s.

Most of the courses that we see on the PGA Tour are private clubs, but this is a municipal golf course, with nearly 60,000 rounds of golf played there annually.

There are only 21 bunkers on the property, which is extremely low compared to most venues. The lack of bunkering makes the course easier for amateurs and more difficult for professionals, who would much prefer to be in the bunker than the rough around the green.

Instead of bunkers, the greens feature closely mowed run-off areas that will create a lot of tight-lie chip shots.

The fairways are standard in width yet are tough to hit on average. The greens are quite large but also difficult to hit on average.

With the length of the course, the thickness of the rough and the trickiness around the green, this course has played as one of the toughest non-majors on the PGA Tour.

As we often see on difficult courses, a strong tee-to-green game is required to contend. That certainly fits the mold of past winners here, including Tony Finau, Jason Kokrak and Carlos Ortiz.

As you will see with my betting card, I’m willing to take a chance on poor putters this week.

Houston Open outright picks

Will zalatoris +2000.

The big story of the outright market this week is that Scottie Scheffler is +275. He’s the best golfer in the world, he’s the class of the field, and he’s coming off back-to-back wins.

It’s scary fading Scheffler, but I can’t bring myself to bet on a golfer to win a full-field event at those odds.

Instead, I’m starting my betting card with another golfer, Zalatoris, who lives in Texas.

Zalatoris missed the cut at The Players but finished fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and second at the Genesis Invitational in his previous two starts.

Thanks to his strong tee-to-green game and course management, he’s one of the best in the field on difficult golf venues, and he has quietly gained at least 1.3 strokes putting in three of his last four starts.

Will Zalatoris of The United States plays his second shot on the 14th hole during the first round of THE PLAYERS Championship.

Stephan Jaeger +5000

Jaeger has found himself in contention a number of times over the last 18 months, but he can never seem to cross the finish line on Sunday.

However, I’m more concerned about getting my golfers into the mix than them crossing the finish line.

Jaeger is one of the best ball-strikers in the field and is elite around the green.

It all comes down to the putter, but again, I’m more willing to bet on bad putters on difficult golf courses.

In his two appearances at this event, he has finished T9 (2022) and T35 (2021).

Doug Ghim +7000

Ghim was a letdown on the weekend at the Valspar Championship, but at least he made the cut.

Before last week, he had reeled together five straight top-20 finishes, and during that stretch, he gained more than 20 strokes ball-striking.

Over the last 24 rounds, he’s eighth in this field in ball-striking and sixth in strokes gained tee to green.

The putter is always a wild card with Ghim, but it’s worth noting that he has gained at least 1.1 strokes with the flatstick in four of his last six starts.

His game has been solid all year and +7000 odds to win are awfully enticing in this weak field.

Joel Dahmen +9000

I had to round out my betting card with another longshot who’s an excellent ball-striker. Over his last two starts, Dahmen has gained 10.0 strokes and 9.2 strokes ball-striking.

For reference, only Scheffler has better ball-striking numbers over the last eight rounds.

If we ignore Dahmen’s recent short-game blunders, how do we not like him at +9000?

He’s won on the PGA Tour before and seems to love this course, with back-to-back top-10 finishes.

He’s worth a sprinkle at these odds.

Peter Malnati fulfills long-awaited dream at Valspar Championship

  • Kristie Ackert Times staff

PALM HARBOR — Peter Malnati has been invited to Augusta over the years. He’s had people offer him tickets to go watch the Masters. The PGA Tour pro, ranked 184th in the world before this week’s Valspar Championship, has had people offer him a chance to play on that hallowed course.

“I told them, ‘I want to go play Augusta when I’m in the Masters,’” Malnati said. “That’s when I want to go play Augusta.”

Sunday evening at Innisbrook Golf Resort, Malnati finally earned that spot.

The 36-year-old Knoxville, Tennessee, resident had a brilliantly steady final round and late birdie to maneuver through a jammed leaderboard, finishing two strokes ahead of Cameron Young to win his first PGA Tour title in nearly nine years.

The win comes with a $1,512,000 prize and two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Malnati also is assured of getting into the remaining four signature events with $20 million purses. And, of course, entrance into next month’s Masters.

But for Malnati, whose last Tour win came before his sons were born in 2019 and 2022, that was all just a bonus.

Sunday elicited all the emotions of one of the PGA’s biggest tournaments for the 11th-year Tour player whose last win was the Sanderson Farms Championship in November 2015.

“You wonder if you are ever going to do it again,” Malnati said through tears on the 18th green with his 4-year-old son, Hatcher, in his arms. “In the years since my last win, it’s getting harder.”

This past week wasn’t any easier.

Malnati needed a final round of 4-under 67 to finish 12-under for the tournament, pulling away from Young, the 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, over the final three holes of the Copperhead Course, known as the Snake Pit.

On the 16th hole, Malnati’s approach shot went long to the left of the green and into heavy rough, leaving him a tough play to try to save par and remain tied with Young. Malnati’s ball was near a sprinkler head, however, which allowed him a drop that put him on the fringe.

The break helped him save par and got him rolling.

On the par-3 17th, Malnati’s tee shot left him with a 6-foot putt, which he made for birdie to take the lead.

Meanwhile, in the group ahead of him, Young pulled his drive well off the 18th fairway into the trees and nearly behind the stands. He escaped the trouble with a tremendous shot to the lip of the green, but then three-putted for bogey.

“It was just a bad time for a pull,” said Young, who has seven runner-up finishes but continues to seek his first Tour win. “Trying to hit kind of the same, similar one that I hit off of 16 (where he made par). Not quite as dramatic of a cut, but just kind of started it on the wrong side of the wind, and it’s blowing pretty good off the right. So, yeah, just a bad time for a bad one.”

Malnati’s approach shot on 18 landed in the fairway bunker, but he got up onto the green and two-putted for par, setting up the moment he had been dreaming of for more than eight years.

It wasn’t the trophy or the trip to Augusta next month.

“That moment of winning a tournament and having your family come out on the green and the big hugs and all that, that’s something that I’ve seen other families have and that has been my dream,” Malnati said, looking over to his wife Alicia and sons Hatcher, 4, and Dash, 1.

“There’s been a lot of stretches of golf in the last nine years when I wondered if I would ever have that experience. I’m at peace with who I am and the way I live and the work that I put into this. If I had never had the moment I had (Sunday), I would have been completely fine. But, man, was that special. That was so special. It felt amazing.”

Malnati took the microphone during the trophy presentation to say that in this turbulent time for golf when smaller tournaments are getting overlooked because of the addition of LIV Golf and the PGA’s enhanced signature events, events such as Valspar continue to be an important part of the Tour.

“I wanted the Copperheads and the people of Tampa and the people from Valspar to know that there are thousands of Peter Malnatis out there who are 10 years old right now, teenagers right now who dream of playing golf on the PGA Tour, and they want to have the moment that I just got to have,” Malnati said.

“If we don’t have communities that believe in what the PGA Tour does and sponsors who support what the PGA Tour does, we don’t have those moments.”
