How to Throw a Bon Voyage Party

We’ve had some incredible interns pass through the doors of team Camille Styles through the years, and saying goodbye at the end of their school year is always bittersweet. Although we’re sad to see them go, it’s exciting to think about the bright future that lies ahead of these talented ladies. In that spirit, we threw a goodbye and good luck party for our current rockstar intern Suruchi, who heads to Minneapolis next month for an amazing career opportunity. She’s been my righthand woman in the kitchen and on the blog these last few months, and I’ll miss her dearly, though thankfully she’s promised to continue contributing to the blog from afar. For her Bon Voyage-themed fête, we teamed up with Target to design an easy breezy appetizer buffet with a nautical vibe. It’s the perfect look for any springtime get-together, and we’re sharing tons of tips in the following slides for keeping things super easy on the host so you can have fun right alongside your guests. As they say, parting is such sweet sorrow…

A Bon Voyage Themed Party

Last Sunday I was on the phone with my good friend Jackie and inquired about when she was expecting the movers. “On Monday” she replied. “What!” I practically shouted. “I know. It’s come up too quickly.” She said. It was time for A Bon Voyage Themed Party.

I quickly looked around my house and saw some spaces that were still in a disheveled state from my recent trip to California. I thought of Erma Bombeck and her “ If I Had My Life To Live Over ” poem which includes the line “I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded”. Yes, messy rooms aside, in the grand scheme of things it was more important that we see our friends before they moved east than to keep my house pride.

Having just a day to throw something together I quickly scanned Pinterest . Why there was a whole smorgasbord of “Bon Voyage” themed parties!

I adored David Stark’s map inspired party . The wall map had “Bon Voyage” spelled out in red thumbtacks. Brilliant!

A romantic version was created by Ampersand and Ink Designs . I think this would make a lovely bridal shower theme.

Don’t forget your vintage suitcases and steamer trunks.

Love the day created darling flags and mini garlands out of maps.

Catch my party rolled up plastic ware in navy paper napkins and secured them with a candy “life preserver” and red ribbon. Too cute!

If you were having a large gathering party favors are especially darling in the form of miniature suitcases.

I also thought about how cute it would it be for a large party to have name tags kind of like this:

Bon Voyage Themed Food

Don’t even get me started on the “Bon Voyage” themed food. I loved the watermelon ship. Or perhaps it’s a Love Boat.

I don’t know if I could eat this work of art.

Wall Decor and More

Then there are all sorts of vintage travel themed posters.

In the end, I settled on an image that featured the Fashionista and Sweet Boy at precisely the ages they were when we first met our friends. Eight years ago both of our families had just moved to Phoenix and we were living at the Residence Inn while we looked for a house.

Shannon (in pink) was not even a year old when she toddled over to our breakfast table under the watchful eye of her parents. She went straight for Mr. Décor who always attracts kids and puppies and smiled the biggest smile. It was love at first sight for all of us. Sweet Boy became fast friends with Erin and Shannon both.

When you are in the Air Force and separated from loved ones you learn to create new family units that have no bloodlines. As we settled just a few blocks from one another we have celebrated numerous birthdays and holidays with our dear friends. They could be counted on in good times and in bad. A rarity in this world.

A soft turquoise linen cloth was laid down and covered by a snowy white topper. Simple plates and cutlery were laid out along with the blue ticking napkins I had made a while ago. It was topped by a “Bon Voyage” printable. Easy peasy.

The centerpiece had been created a few days earlier with peonies that the heat had taken care of. Replacement spider mums in white looked great too.

Marinated and grilled tri-tip and chicken

Laura’s potato salad

Corn on the cob

Spinach and strawberry salad

Rote Beeren (warm red berry sauce over vanilla ice cream)

It was so good that some of our guests licked their plates. (I love kids!)

I couldn’t send my favorite girls home empty-handed. As they are driving to their new home I transformed J. Crew bags with a printable, ribbons and filled them with travel-sized snacks (both healthy and fun) as well as a few travel activity books.

I know it will not be the last time we will see our friends. (Their new home has a gorgeous guest room!) But still, they will be sorely missed. Sniff.

Reasons for a Goodbye Party

Going away party etiquette, invitations for a goodbye party, going away party themes, farewell cake ideas, party games, decorations.

Every person has a different reason for moving, and it’s important to consider these reasons before planning. Below are the four most common occasions for a going away party:

• Military : Deployment parties are common for a military send off. Whether your loved one is leaving for the Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Army, or Marines, let them know they’ll be missed.
• College : After high school graduation many make the big move to a distant school. Before they begin their college journey, celebrate their previous accolades and future adventure with a grad party .
• Career : Who knows where your career will take you? Whether it’s across the world or to a nearby city, there’s always a reason to party.
• Travel : When someone is traveling to another state or country and will be gone for a while, throw a goodbye party. Make sure you get the chance to say Bon Voyage and start their travels on an excited note.

Should you bring a gift to a farewell party? In short, yes. However, there are a few etiquette best practices to keep in mind.

• Don’t get anything the guest-of-honor doesn’t need or want. There’s a good chance that the person moving away is trying to get rid of most of their things before the move. They’d appreciate it if you didn’t add onto that burden.
• Ask them if there’s something they need for their new home. Getting something they can use in the next stage of their life is thoughtful and practical.
• Get them something they can remember you buy. Consider using your favorite photo of you two and creating a custom glass print . That way they can take you with them.

Future Destination

Give your guests a taste of your new home with a ‘future destination’ themed party. This is the perfect way to celebrate and say “out with the old and in with the new.” Make food the new city is famous for. Include photo plates with pictures of the city’s largest landmark. Decorate with tourist destinations located in the new city. This theme shows off a little bit of your new home to all the dear friends you’ve made.

This expression offers well wishes to someone about to go on a journey. Is there a more fitting theme for a going away soirée? When it comes to décor, think airplanes and maps on printed table runners and hallway banners. This is a perfect theme for someone about to go on a long trip.

Packing Party

Who said it was wrong to put guests to work at your own party? One of our favorite themes for sending a loved one off is a packing party. Bring out the duct tape and boxes. Friends and family can make the best moving crew with some provided food and drinks.

Military Send Off

If the guest of honor is headed to the military say goodbye with a themed party and military style goodbye gifts . Decorate the walls with the emblem of their military branch. Craft care packages to send with the person as they start their training or their post. Make sure you show your support and love as they start their service.

Color Themed Party

If the guest of honor doesn’t want a specific themed goodbye party, then you can opt for a color combo. This will make the planning easier and still give the party a uniform feel. Test out the following color combos:
