How to Plan a Group Cruise

group travel cruise

Traveling in a group can be the death knell of vacation fun. It sounds like a great idea at first -- reunite with far-flung family and friends on neutral ground where no one has to host -- but the reality doesn't always live up to expectations. Differing budgets, activity levels and interests, as well as travel style clashes, can lead to more headaches than memories.

Take frequent traveler Donald Smith, as an example. He often vacationed with friends and family at resort destinations like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Montego Bay , Jamaica, but says he didn't enjoy himself as much as he hoped. "You always felt like you were tied together to do absolutely everything together," says Smith, an information technology administrator in Columbus, Ohio. He also tired of the large amount of daily group decision-making about everything from what to do and who's going to drive to where to eat. Sound familiar?

His disappointment in group travel reversed itself when he discovered cruising, a way to travel with an assemblage of family and friends but without the obligation to spend every waking moment together. Smith planned his first group cruise for 13 pals in 2007, and the same group, more or less, has cruised together annually since.

Cruises offer the best of all worlds for groups: They appeal to travelers of all ages, offer various levels and types of activity, and allow people with different budgets to still vacation together. Your group is contained in one place, everyone can set their own onboard agenda, and there's no need for National Security Council-level strategic planning just to choose the restaurant for dinner.

But, as Smith has learned, advanced planning is the key to a successful group cruise. Based on his experience and that of other experienced group cruise planners, we culled the 10 golden rules of planning a group cruise.

1. Appoint a group leader.

Every group needs a leader -- the person who will do the majority of the preplanning research, send the invitations to the group, communicate pricing and determine how to book your cruise. In general, the leader takes the lead in organizing the trip and looks out for the good of the group, both before and during the cruise. In this way, the travelers making up the rest of the group don't have to repeat work, such as looking for cruise fares or remembering when payments are due, and there's no chaos surrounding several different people trying to organize group shore tours at the same time.

Sometimes this leader is self-appointed, perhaps the person who came up with the idea of going on the cruise in the first place. Other times, the group appoints a highly organized and willing volunteer to make executive decisions, communicate with the group and enforce deadlines. Either way, "one person needs to own it," advises Robyn Porter, a real estate agent in Rockville, Maryland, who was the self-elected organizer of a 2010 cruise for 19 family members.

"The leader cannot be a pushover," she says. "If you get too many cooks in the kitchen, there will be too much arguing. The leader has to be a strong personality who is still flexible enough to take other people's ideas into consideration."

The reward for your hard work as a leader? You could get a free cabin or shipboard credit if you have a requisite number of others booked in your traveling group.

2. Diplomatically choose your cruise.

It's tricky finding the perfect cruise for a group of 10 or 20 people of different ages, abilities and interests. The first task of the group leader is to figure out how to choose the best cruise for the people involved, without making everyone unhappy.

There are several approaches to consider. You can choose a cruise you want to do and then invite friends and family to join you if they're interested. In Porter's case, she and husband and son had cruised the Caribbean and explored the Mediterranean already, so a cruise to Alaska was next on their list. "Once we decided on Alaska, I got 'buy in' from some other close family members, then we expanded out and invited more people," she explains.

Alternately, group members may agree to let the leader choose the cruise in exchange for not having to do their own research. Darlene Sigwart says she was perfectly content having someone else plan her November 2011 cruise -- in this case, her father -- for a group of 13 family members between the ages of 9 and 70. He was the group leader in this case, and he decided on the destination.

"I just knew I was getting on the ship and going," says Sigwart, a human resources professional in Arnold, Maryland. "And I was fine with that."

A third option is to come up with a few destination choices and let the group vote -- as long as everyone agrees to be O.K. with the majority choice.

The destination narrows down your choice of ships, and from the options available, you can select the ship that best suits the ages, interests and budgets of the passengers. For assistance on picking the right trip, see our primer on first time cruise tips .

3. Book ahead -- and we really, really mean it this time.

Nabbing a cabin on the ship of your choice to a popular destination during high-season dates can be tough for a mere couple seeking out one bed, let alone for a large group needing multiple staterooms. Early bookings are a must for those who:

Plan to travel during the summer or school holidays.

Have a need for triples or quads or connecting or neighboring cabins, which are all limited in number.

Want the choicest cabins on the newest ships.

Have a very specific itinerary in mind.

Booking ahead also gives you plenty of time to organize travel arrangements, shore excursions, even group T-shirts, without needing to quit your day job.

4. Put a travel agent to work for you.

You certainly can book your group (typically eight cabins or more) directly through a cruise line, but many group organizers recommend using a cruise agent who specializes in groups. Agents often have established relationships with cruise lines and access to discounts and perks that individuals don't. Plus, they can make recommendations on appropriate cruises for your group, as well as travel destinations and shore excursions, leaving you with less work to do. Three more great reasons for working with an agent include:

You can work with one dedicated person and establish a relationship with him or her. If you book online, you can always call the cruise seller, but you might talk to different representatives each time.

Agents have access to cruise line-approved discounts that come as a result of high-volume bookings and also know what amenities are available to groups. These could include free berths, onboard credits, upgraded cabins, discounts for group leaders or other perks. Depending on the number of people in your party, you also could get free photos, cocktail parties or private meeting spaces.

The agent can send individual invoices to the folks in the group and remind them of key deadlines so the group leader doesn't have to.

5. Communicate via e-mail.

If you merely rely on phone calls and informal chats, it's inevitable that some piece of info about the cruise arrangements will get misinterpreted, a deadline will be forgotten, or some other frustrating communication lapse will leave a member of your group pouting. Because of that, it's best to send out trip details and discuss plans via e-mail.

The same goes for corresponding with your travel agent. Smith said he prefers communicating via e-mail because it's more convenient than placing frequent phone calls and also gives him a written record of their communications.

Some groups -- especially those that are very large, like extended family reunions or school groups -- go so far as to set up special Web sites with logistical details, calendars of deadlines, links to the cruise ship shore excursion sites, etc. If you have the time and technical knowhow allows it, we say go for it. (It's also a good place to share photos when you get home.)

6. Establish a calendar of important dates.

Knowing how busy most folks are, your fellow travelers will appreciate receiving a calendar noting payment due dates, the "opening day" for booking shore excursions through the cruise line and deadlines for filling out passenger information forms online. It's also useful to send out e-mail reminders about upcoming due dates.

7. Decide in advance how to handle shore excursions.

Just as you want to set expectations for your group for the cruise itself, you want to set expectations for ports of call. Would your group be amenable to doing all excursions together? Or are there so many different ages, abilities and interests that people prefer to do their own thing, teaming up only when interests coincide?

In Smith's case, his group never does the same excursion¬. He prefers to chill at an all-inclusive beach resort. His wife and father-in-law go shopping. His parents tend to stay onboard.

Again, here's a place for the group leader to step up. "I usually try to figure out what I'm doing early on and tell everyone my plan," Smith said. "If someone wants to do the same thing, I will arrange it. Otherwise, I will help them plan something else."

If a bunch of those in your group are planning to do the same excursion, book the activity in advance. Sigwart's father did just that, arranging for an airboat ride in Port Canaveral for his sons and grandsons. (The women went shopping and to the beach on their own.)

The same rule applies if you want to plan a special shore excursion just for your group. Carnival , for example, allows you to custom-design an excursion if your group has booked eight or more staterooms, and it absolutely has to be planned in advance. Also, if you have a large enough group, you might be able to save money by booking a private independent tour, versus booking many spaces on a cruise line-sponsored excursion. If you plan to go this route, you will want to make arrangements prior to the trip.

group travel cruise

8. Fly to the homeport city a day early.

It's best to arrive the day before embarkation, not the day of -- "especially in the winter," Smith advises, when weather delays could risk your on-time arrival. The trip would start on a sour note if a few from your group missed the boat -- literally. Reserve a few hotel rooms for the night. If four people share one room, you can divvy up the cost, making it reasonably priced for that extra day.

Porter had all of her group tour participants book their own flights -- she merely told them where to go and when to be there, and she later collected all the itineraries so she could track arrivals. In Smith's case, his travel companions depart from the same airport, so he booked everyone on the same flight.

And, if you are arriving early, plan something special like a festive group dinner or cocktail hour, so the overnight stay feels less like a burden and more like the true start of your vacation. Bonus feature: The group leader can use this time to communicate the meet-up plan for the next day.

9. Do your own thing.

Countless groups advise the same concept: When on the cruise, do what it is you enjoy doing, when you want to do it. You're on vacation, after all; you should be able to sleep late if you want, laze by the pool all day, or dance in the nightclub until the wee hours.

"Make people comfortable with the idea that they don't have to do everything with everybody," Porter advises. "Create an environment in which people can speak up that they don't want to do something, and other people can't get offended by that."

10. Come up with a plan to periodically regroup.

Even if your group is committed to splitting up during the cruise, it's a good idea to regroup at least once a day. Because communication can be tough -- using cell phones during a cruise can accrue eye-popping roaming charges -- setting a specific time to meet up is helpful.

Sigwart says she was envious of those who used walkie-talkies on the ship; the devices would have been helpful for trying to locate family members during their days at sea. "We should have had a better plan, like, 'Let's all meet on the pool deck at two o'clock,'" she says.

Groups often use dinner as the regrouping time, sitting together at a big table in the dining room. Others even get together for happy hour in one of the cabins or a lounge first. There might be one special event that everyone could attend as one group -- a particular show onboard, for example, or a group-friendly shore excursion. And don't forget about arranging to meet for the requisite group photo ... just to prove you were all traveling together!

Perks and Benefits of a Group Cruise

Going on a group cruise is a lot of fun, but there are also some perks and benefits. While the perks will vary by cruise line, here are a few things to be aware of.

When you book several cabins on a cruise ship as a group, some possible perks include getting a free cabin or berth, a reduced price or group rate, and some extras like onboard credits. Very large groups may even be able to arrange cocktail parties for group members.

How Can You Get a Free Cabin on a Group Cruise?

If you’re organizing a group cruise, it’s possible to get a free cabin or a free berth, which is one half of a cabin at double occupancy.

Depending on the cruise line, one free berth is given as a benefit when booking between 5 and 8 cabins on a cruise ship as part of a group cruise. The free berth is usually given to the group leader or “tour conductor” (TC).

10 Tips for Organizing a Group Cruise

group travel cruise

1. Choose a Cruise

If you’re organizing a group cruise, the first thing you need to do is choose a cruise.

Consider the people you expect to come along or invite – which cruise ship, itinerary and sailing dates would be best suited for your friends, family or group?

If you have kids and families as part of your group cruise, Spring break and summer cruises are great choices.

If you have a class reunion, would a cruise line that offers free perks or all inclusive options including a drink package be a good idea?

Holiday cruises can be a great idea for multi-generational group travel .

It might take a bit of brainstorming and chatting with other members of your group, but finding the right cruise for everyone will ensure that you all enjoy the vacation.

2. Have a Group Leader

group travel cruise

Have a group leader that will take charge of the main organization of your cruise. The group organizer can gather information and coordinate for the group.

It will be hard to do it alone, especially if the group is large. Along with the group leader, a couple of helpers to take care of some of the tasks is a fun way to share the responsibilities of planning the group cruise.

3. Use a Travel Agent

travel agent

When planning a group cruise, it’s a good idea to use a travel agent or personal cruise consultant. Travel agencies are experts in planning group cruises for weddings, family reunions, church groups etc.

Your travel agent will help you to choose the best cruise and cabins for everyone in the group, and navigate all the things that need to be done for each person in your party.

Of course, you can also book directly with the cruise line. However, travel agents have access to the best pricing by the cruise line, as well as perks including shipboard credits.

Even if you are the group leader, you don’t want to be dealing with all the details of everyone’s booking. Inevitably, you’ll have some people who need to make changes or have questions about the cruise, and a travel agent is best equipped to deal with this.

4. Book Early

The earlier you book your cruise, the better! If you’re cruising during school holidays or any high season, booking your cruise 10 months to a year, or more, in advance is ideal.

Even for regular seasons, booking about 8 months or more in advance will give you the best benefits. Keep in mind that prices usually increase for cruises as they get closer, and the group rates will usually be lower if you book early .

5. Set Up a Facebook Group for the Group

Forming an online community on Facebook, where everyone can share information about the cruise, cruise ports and onboard activities is a great way to keep everyone excited about the trip.

Facebook groups are especially good for very large groups, as you can even share YouTube videos, cruise packing articles and more. In addition, Facebook groups can be used to share reminders about final payments, online check in and more.

If you’re planning a girl’s trip, consider setting up a group Pinterest board. You can post your favorite articles, tips and even cruise outfits for information, fun and inspiration.

6. Communicate Expectations

As much as group cruises can be a perfect vacation choice, they are only fun is everyone knows what to expect. It’s important to communicate about what everyone wants out of the group vacation.

Decide if you all want to do many group activities, or if you prefer to have meal time together, but otherwise everyone does their own thing.

There’s no right or wrong on this. However, in order to have a successful group cruise, when everyone is on the same page they will be more likely to have a good time.

7. Get the Party Started One Day Early

group travel cruise

Let everyone know that they should plan on arriving one day early for the cruise, especially if they are flying to the cruise port. Even for those that are driving long distances, consider planning a group stay at a hotel near the cruise terminal the night before the cruise.

It will be a lot of fun to meet up the night before the cruise and get that party started! The group leader or organizers can make reservations at a restaurant, so the group can have dinner together.

This works equally well for small group cruises with your favorite friends, as well as larger events where members of the group are less familiar.

8. Planning Shore Excursions

Some groups like to do group excursions, while other groups prefer to have everyone choose their own shore excursions . If you have people of all different ages and interests, the latter might be the best option.

In some cases, the cruise line may arrange a customized group tour or excursion. For example, Carnival Cruise Line will arrange custom group excursions for groups with 35 guests.

Check with your travel agent, cruise planner or cruise line for more information and to see what options might be available to your group.

9. Group Cruise Shirts

cruise tshirts couple

A great way to identify your group is by ordering group cruise t-shirts. No matter if you’re on a family group cruise, a friend’s cruise or a hobby cruise (ie. dance group, quilters etc.), having matching cruise shirts is a fun idea!

The Ultimate Guide to Group Travel

By Carnival Cruise Line

All the tips and tricks to make group travel a breeze!

Traveling with a group can have tons of benefits–and our group travel guide can show you how to make the most of every single one!

Whether you’re traveling with large or small groups, friends, family (even coworkers!), keep these golden rules in mind to make sure you have the most fun together.

Line of adventurers walking along a snowy landscape.

1. Assign a leader

Every group trip should have someone helming the ship. They’ll be the point-person for the group–often getting everyone on board and maybe leading when booking accommodations, activities , and sending out reminders, or splitting up tasks between everyone in the group.

It’s easy to check on last-minute details within your group when one person has all the info. Plus, it makes the journey to the destination smooth sailing!

Two women packing luggage.

2. Know the must-pack items

If you’re all thrill-seeking in the Caribbean , no one wants a big hike canceled because someone didn’t bring the right shoes! Make sure everyone looks at the itinerary beforehand, and packs the right shoes, clothes, and toiletries for the trip.

Since everyone has different tastes, packing a variety of snacks can be a life-saver when you’re all on the move. Just be sure to check for any allergies beforehand, so that everyone has the right snacks (and medicine) when you’re away.

Other musts: sunscreen! It should be used every few hours, and because you’re in a group of multiple people, it can run out fast! Pack an extra bottle, just in case.

Oh, and don’t forget a speaker for the trip! Your group will love the impromptu karaoke sessions or podcast stories ‘round the speaker.

Extra pro-tip: make packing a group activity, whether in-person or via call. It gets rid of the stress while packing–plus everyone can get reminded of what they need right away!

3. Break off into smaller groups

In a group trip, we know that everyone’s idea of fun may not be the same. No big deal!

Say you’re in Marseilles , part of France’s famous wine country where there’s plenty to do. If each of you have different ideas in mind, no harm in splitting up! Some of the group can explore local wine and cheese tastings, while others tour local architecture like Ancient Roman aqueducts and the hometown of Nostradamus !

Wherever you go, just be sure to set up a time to meet up again and continue on your adventures together!

Shot of three friends arriving at the beach with a picnic basket.

4. Don’t overschedule

With rule #3 in mind, be sure to keep some parts of the itinerary free. When you’re traveling in a group filled with different needs and energy levels, it’s always best to be flexible!

Who knows? On-shore in Cozumel , you might come across a few open spots for cooking lessons you didn’t see before! Or maybe after a day of adventure in parks, nature reserves, and coral reefs, all your group wants to do is unwind at the beach .

Either way, prepare for (unexpected) fun!

5. Don’t be afraid to talk budget

Some people like to splurge on vacation, while others like to be more budget-friendly. So it’s important for the group to get a feel for everyone’s spending limits. Then, set up a group fund or budget before you go.

When it comes to splitting costs on food, alcohol, or shopping, definitely don’t “figure it out later”. On a trip full of activities, it’s easy to forget! Apps like Splittr or Splitwise help you keep track of shared expenses.

Travelers walking along a city street surrounded by shops with signs in foreign languages.

6. Don’t be afraid to talk… in another language!

You don’t have to be fluent in Italian to go to Italy , but don’t leave home without knowing a bit of your destination’s local language. Especially for a group trip!

Any number of people in your group can pick up a few phrases native to your destination. A simple “ Which direction should I go in?” can save you a lot of confused group chatter.

The best part? You’ll definitely put a smile on the local’s faces!

Female tourist overlooking a golden shot of Vernazza.

7. Find time to recharge your social battery

Keep yourself feeling refreshed and ready for the next group activity by making room for some much-needed “me time”!

It can be as simple as spending the morning solo in a coffee shop, or blocking out a half-day to visit a museum that’s high on your priority list. However you choose to spend the time is all up to you!

Group cruises are a great way to spend a vacation with friends, family or any other type of group whether large or small. Cruises provide great value On a cruise people can opt to go their own way part of the time or, if they choose, join in on group activities. Dining can be together as a group or only for certain nights within a cruise. A group cruise can be set up in the way that works best for each group.

How does a Group Cruise Work?

While it varies by cruise line in general 8 cabins makes up a group, however, in some cases the number only 5 cabins maybe required to create a group. Once the number of cabins is determined we will hold the group space and then the group leader can promote the group, communicate the details such as pricing to the group, determine the dining and meeting space needs and get people excited to join the cruise.

Benefits of Booking a Group Cruise

There are many benefits of booking a group cruise. First is lower pricing and the rates are guaranteed for the categories that are held. Without booking into a group the rates are always subject to change. In addition, groups are offered extra amenities ranging from onboard credits, a complimentary bottle of wine or a cocktail party, specialty dining or other amenities.

Plus, the group leader can sail for FREE as a tour conductor credit will be issued back after the group sails. The amount of the tour conductor credit varies according to the cruise lines and the number and variety of cabins within the group. In general it is one berth (not cabin) for 16 full fare passengers traveling in the group. And, the more cabins that are sold the higher the number of tour conductor credits are earned!

Group Activities

Group activities can be varied according to the group needs. Dining can be set up together, special parties can be set up on board, meeting space complete with audio-visual equipment and group shore excursions can be offered.

Understanding Group Cruises

Traveling with a group on a cruise is not just a journey; it’s an experience that binds relationships, creates memories, and offers unique perks. Let’s explore what group cruise bookings are and why they might be the best option for your next big event.

What Is a Group Cruise Booking?

A group cruise booking is for friends, family, colleagues, influencers and their fans, or any collective that wants to travel together on predefined cruise itineraries. This method of booking provides bulk discounts and added benefits but doesn’t offer the flexibility or capacity of chartering an entire vessel.

In group bookings:

  • Participants travel as regular passengers.
  • They enjoy individual freedoms but can also opt for coordinated activities.
  • The group benefits from exclusive rates and perks.

Qualifications for Group Cruise Rates:

Generally speaking, you’ll probably need to meet these requirements:

  • Guests : A minimum of 16 passengers.
  • Staterooms : A requirement of eight or more cabin bookings.
  • Occupancy Ratio : An average of two guests for every cabin.

Depending on the cruise line, there might be variations in how they define group cruises. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers group benefits when booking five rooms and gives you the sixth room free.

Why Opt for a Group Cruise Booking?

Here are some compelling benefits of group cruises:

  • Economical : Enjoy stable, reduced rates that don’t vary like individual bookings.
  • Extra Perks : Think onboard credits, exclusive parties, and complimentary beverages.
  • Personalized Experience : Design activities, meals, and excursions tailored to your group.
  • Exclusive Facilities : Access meeting areas equipped with modern amenities like A/V equipment.
  • Complimentary Spaces : Often, the group leader may get a free trip based on the number of cabins reserved (see next section).

With reduced rates, added perks, and customization options, group cruises can be an affordable and memorable way to vacation.

Pro Tip: Prices are based on double occupancy per cabin, so if you want the lowest prices per person, make sure that all the rooms are full.

Group Leader Benefits

Many cruise lines reward group leaders with free cabins, known as tour conductor credits, for organizing cruise bookings. The number of free cabins depends on the following:

  • Total cabins booked
  • Cabin type booked
  • Guests paying full fare

For example, booking 16 cabins with full-fare guests may earn one free cabin. Booking 32 could mean two free. With 100 cabins, you may earn six free!

A group leader does not pay the base fare for free cabins, just taxes, and fees. Free cabin type is determined by what the group books.

If you plan to organize a group cruise booking and want a complimentary fare, contact The Vacationeer or cruise lines to find out which promotion tiers are available.

Comparing Group Cruises to Partial and Full Ship Charters

When planning a cruise getaway for a group, understanding the differences between group cruises and chartering parts or the entire ship is key. Let’s explore the pros and cons of each option:

Group Cruise

Description:

  • Joins a regular cruise alongside other passengers.
  • Typically involves reserving a block of 8 to 20 cabins, accommodating around 16 to 40 people.
  • Adheres to the ship’s set itinerary and entertainment.
  • Group block fares at a discount make it more affordable.
  • Some exclusive amenities tailored for the group.
  • Offers greater flexibility for changes.
  • Limited personalization due to a fixed itinerary and entertainment.
  • Shared voyage with other passengers, thus less exclusivity.

Partial Charter Ship

  • Reserves approximately 30-50% of the ship’s capacity.
  • Provides the luxury of customizing certain elements.
  • Exclusive spaces dedicated to the group.
  • Involves fixed fees and minimum spending.
  • Reduced flexibility for modifications.

Full Charter Ship

  • Privileges of commandeering the entire ship.
  • Opportunities for a fully tailored journey.
  • Offers unparalleled exclusivity.
  • Complete autonomy in planning the voyage.
  • Significantly more expensive, with starting costs at $1 million+.
  • While offering prestige, there’s reduced flexibility in terms of adjustments.

Your choice among these options will hinge on factors like budget, group size, and the level of desired customization. Consult a travel expert like The Vacationee r for personalized advice, and see our article on How to Charter a Cruise Ship .

How to Book Your Group Cruise

Follow these steps for a seamless group cruise booking process:

  • Pick a cruise line & ship catering to your group’s interests, budget, and size.

  • Contact the cruise line or agent to place a tentative hold while finalizing details.
  • Confirm details like promo codes, pricing, amenities, and payment schedule.
  • Send invitations and promote the group cruise to prospective guests.
  • Collect deposits from those confirmed to join. Cruise deposits are typically $250-$500 per person.
  • Submit rooming list and process the group’s initial deposits as the deadline approaches.
  • Monitor bookings and release unfilled allotments if needed as the date nears.
  • Final payment is typically due 60-90 days pre-cruise.

Group Cruise Payment and Savings Guide

Embarking on a group cruise offers exciting experiences and significant savings. Understanding payment procedures and available discounts is key to maximizing these benefits.

Payment Details

A preliminary deposit is crucial to confirm your booking. This amount fluctuates based on the cruise line, destination, and duration.

Final Payment:

Complete payments are typically expected 60-90 days before sailing. It’s vital to be aware of this deadline to avoid any last-minute cancellations.

Payment Modes:

Cruise lines mainly accept credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers. Always confirm accepted methods with your travel agent or cruise line.

Maximizing Group Cruise Savings

A group cruise typically offers savings between 5% and 40% off the cruise line’s published rates for individual bookings . However, the specific group cruise discount depends on several factors, such as:

  • Chosen cruise line.
  • Seasonality.
  • Specific ship or route.
  • Group size.
  • Stateroom type.

Sometimes onboard credits are offered instead of fare discounts. Check with your agent for current promotions.

Top Savings Tips

  • Early Reservations : Book 12+ months out to secure preferred cabins at discounted group rates
  • Off-Peak Bookings : Opt for Fall and Winter when fares are lower.
  • Single Supplement Offers : Some lines waive single supplements for the first guests in a cabin.
  • Promotional Deals : Check for regional or time-limited group cruise discounts, reduced deposits, or perks.
  • Proximity of Ports : Choosing a nearby departure port cuts associated travel costs.
  • Agent Assistance : Seasoned travel agents (such as The Vacationeer) can access special rates and added benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Cruises

Planning a group cruise involves many details. Here are answers to some common questions to help you prepare.

How early should I book a group cruise?

Aim to book at least 12 months in advance, or as early as 18 months for peak seasons. This allows you to secure the best cabins at discounted group rates before they sell out.

What is the best month to go on a group cruise?

If looking for deals, October – December and January – March tend to have lower rates since kids are in school. School breaks and holiday weeks are peak periods for demand and prices.

Can we bring decorations for our group?

Yes, you can bring banners, signs, and decorations. Just confirm with your booking agent. Some items like confetti or sticking materials may be prohibited.

How formal are group cruise dinners?

Attire ranges from smart casual to formal nights. Pack a mix of sundresses, polos, nice jeans, jackets, and cocktail attire. Check your cruise’s dress code.

I Planned a River Cruise With 48 of My Closest Friends and Family — Here’s How You Can, Too

Here's how I pulled off the trip of a lifetime.

group travel cruise

emicristea/Travel + Leisure

There’s nothing my husband and I love more than traveling, but doing so with family and friends — especially if they’re hesitant travelers or we’re walking them through their first trip to Europe — makes it all the more meaningful for us.

So, as we looked ahead to December 2023 — we'd both be turning 30 and nearing 10 years married — we began to brainstorm epic ways to celebrate.

We thought back to one of our most treasured travel experiences — our first river cruise — on the (unfortunately) now-defunct U River Cruises, and knew this was the perfect way to get as many of our loved ones as possible on board for a week-long adventure in Europe (with minimal logistical headaches and day-to-day planning required on our part).

Skye Sherman/Travel + Leisure

Sure, I’m a travel writer, but I make no claims as a group trip specialist, and a river cruise has daily itineraries, plus meals, excursions, and fun programming built in. With a mostly U.S.-based group, we knew Europe was the right destination, too: Access is easy, we’ve been many times, and it’s a comfortable first major trip abroad for even the most timid travelers.

As we began to plan Aaron and Skye’s Epic 30th Birthday Bash River Cruise Extravaganza, I scoured CruiseMapper and reviewed charter and group booking options from Emerald Cruises, Lüftner, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld, Tauck, Viking, Amadeus, and more; I compared costs, dates, itineraries, availability, and occupancy of various ships, routes, and companies.

After much deliberation, we went with AmaWaterways , which turned out to be first in the long line of things that went right.

The Details

AmaWaterways, a family-owned river cruise company with European roots, offered a part-charter option on its newest ship at the best price and at the most convenient time: the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

roevin/Getty Images

We spent Dec. 28, 2023, through Jan. 4, 2024 aboard the AmaSiena , sailing the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, Netherlands (one of our all-time favorite cities, an added bonus), on an itinerary known as the Enchanting Rhine .

The Difference Between a Full Charter, Part Charter, and Group Booking

With AmaWaterways, a part charter is similar to a group booking, but you’re obligated to a minimum. Once you sign, you “own” that number of cabins and are responsible for filling them, but can switch names and even cabin types (depending on availability) throughout the process, if needed. The public can also book cabins on a partly chartered ship.

A full charter means reserving the entire ship for your group’s private use; this is more expensive, unless you have a group big enough to fill every cabin and can divide the costs accordingly.

We went with a part-charter option for 10 cabins initially, but ended up with 28 filled. All the bookings had to go through me — a welcome excuse to let my extreme attention to detail be put to good use.

We chose our cruise because the time frame, while a busy period to travel, is also when most people are already off work (or have a lighter-than-usual load). Plus, we’d get to ring in a new year together, and a holiday or special occasion makes a trip like this even easier to justify. Our priority was making the trip as accessible as possible to as many of our loved ones as possible.

Another perk? This route comfortably hit four countries (Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands) in a week, checking off lots of countries for everyone.

All 48 members of our crew had as epic of a time as we did — we’re already discussing the second installment of what will perhaps become an annual tradition — and while our group consisted of relatives and friends both old and new, by the end, we all felt like family.

Having almost everyone I love sleeping within 100 feet of me for a week, walking off the ship each morning to explore new countries together, celebrating a massive joint birthday party, watching cousins mingle with best friends mingle with family friends mingle with work partners, seeing New Year’s Eve fireworks erupt in a 360-degree panorama from the ship’s top deck, and partying until the sun rose on New Year’s day — a life highlight, indeed.

How to Plan Your Own River Cruise Group Trip

Want to recreate this memorable adventure in your own way? Below are some tips for helping your trip go off without a hitch.

Don’t poll.

Yes, I said it: Don’t ask for opinions. Everyone’s going to have a different perspective and you’ll overwhelm yourself trying to cater to them all. There’s no way you can please everyone with the perfect itinerary and dates, so do your best to put forth a reasonable plan, get buy-in from a few MVPs, and let go of the rest.

Create a website.

Unless you want to continually email or text the same information again and again, collect all the relevant links, plans, details, and thoughts in one easy-to-reference receptacle, like a website. Think of it as a wedding website, but for your group trip. Websites are easy to create with Wix, and you can include pages with travel tips, flight recommendations, packing advice , checklists, timelines, and more. You can also use Wix to send email newsletters when you need to blast information to everyone.

Organize, organize, organize.

When it comes to your role as acting-travel-agent-in-chief, Google Drive is your friend. I created a meticulously organized Google Drive, where I tracked everything in documents, sheets, and more, and used Google Forms for further planning.

Check your passport.

You know what’s not fun? Being on the hook for a traveler who can’t find their passport or neglected to check its expiration date .

As guests commit and book, have them send you their passport expiration date so that they locate their passport with plenty of time before the trip and you can ensure it’s still valid. Remember, some countries require six months of validity on a passport.

Encourage early arrivals.

Flying in before your adventure officially begins is a good way to spend extra quality time together, get the mingling started, and ward off any potential travel snafus and delays. You can count on something going wrong with this many moving parts, but by cushioning the beginning of your trip in case of emergency, you’ll get peace of mind and some padding where it counts.

As the hosts, we arrived in Europe eight days before embarking on our river cruise, opting for a brief stay in Zürich followed by a snowboarding trip in Zermatt to celebrate Christmas and my husband’s birthday. We then took the train to Basel (as a group of seven, after convincing friends to join!).

Create a group chat.

As your adventure nears, a group chat is a great way to get everyone on the same page, make announcements, and begin intros. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Slack are all good options. Just be prepared for the conversation to continue long after the trip — the love is still going strong in ours.

Solo cruises rated: The top singles-friendly cruise lines for independent explorers

Sailing solo? These cruise lines have got you covered

Sailing solo? These cruise lines have got you covered with reduced supplements, mingle-at-sea events and dedicated lounges.

Solo travellers can set sail on an array of solo-friendly cruise lines to mingle at sea or enjoy solace aboard a swanky ship.

Once a niche market, solo travel has surged in popularity, prompting cruise lines to cater to this growing demographic with tailored experiences and amenities.

According to a study by Travelport, solo travel made up nearly 18% of global bookings in the travel industry.

Cruising giant Norwegian Cruise Line has also seen an increase in guests booking accommodations as a single occupant in non-studio staterooms.

Akvile Marozaite, CEO of the Expedition Cruise Network, says, “Cruising has always been a perfect form of travel for solo travellers due to its inclusive, safe, and self-contained nature.”

“Travellers on intimate cruise ships can find an in-built community of like-minded passengers onboard, so it is easy to make friends for life with bonds built from the shared experience of visiting incredible, remote destinations.”

From introducing single cabins and scrapping single supplements to onboard activities designed for socialising, cruise liners are trying to entice solo travellers with several key benefits as the demand for single occupancy rises.

Here are some of the best cruises for solo travellers.

Grand Circle Cruise Line: Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers 2024

Grand Circle Cruise Line recently earned the title of the Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers in the 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

The award-winning cruise line offers the lowest single supplements in the industry across all trips and free single supplements on all pre- and post-trip extensions.

They operate an impressive fleet of privately-owned river ships throughout Europe , where you can explore in small groups (38 on average) aboard Grand Circle's 86- to 162-passenger ships.

Their Discovery Series events take you into the heart of their destination's culture, providing a glimpse at its people's day-to-day lives.

Local Program Directors also accompany cruisers throughout the trip, with up to four Program Directors available to each group.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Plenty of single rooms

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has taken the lead in solo cruising and has nearly 1,000 dedicated solo staterooms across its diverse 19-ship fleet.

This year, the popular cruise line will open for sale three new solo stateroom categories, including Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview and Solo Balcony, for sailings in 2024.

With pricing and availability dependent on the destination and demand, solo travellers can expect to pay less than a traditional double occupancy room.

Seafaring guests in the new solo stateroom categories will also have access to the key card entry-only studio lounge, available on select ships, which features a dedicated space for solo travellers to relax and a bar serving drinks and snacks.

Solo cruisers can enjoy activities scheduled for single travellers to mix and mingle at sea.

Once a niche market, solo travel has surged in popularity,

Aqua Expeditions: Small ships for solo travellers

Aqua Expeditions offers solo travellers the chance to explore the world’s most biodiverse and culturally significant destinations aboard stylish small ships, thanks to a Solo Traveller Special, with zero supplements on selected 2024 and 2025 departures.

Aboard these swanky vessels, solo cruisers can enjoy upscale dining, plunge pools, jacuzzis, spa treatment rooms and a personalised 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio.

The small group setting, tailored experiences, exceptional service, shared adventures and meals make it an ideal choice for those exploring the world independently.

Silversea Cruises: Luxury solo cruising

Silversea Cruises, specifically the Silver Spirit, should be on the radar for solo travellers who lean towards luxury .

This cruise ship's ‘Silver Solo’ program is tailored for solo cruisers, offering specially designed cabins that ooze comfort.

Single supplements are also priced at 25% on selected voyages to reduce costs for independent travellers.

Every voyage includes a champagne Welcome Reception to make meeting and mingling with solo travellers easier. Hosts will also be onboard on select voyages to greet solo guests.

Many cruises now champagne offer a Welcome Reception to make meeting and mingling with solo travellers easier

Virgin Voyages: Adult-only cruises perfect for solo travellers

US News & World Report named Virgin Voyages “among the best cruises for solo travellers” in 2022.

This adult-only cruise line caters to solo sailors, with their impressive cruise ships renowned for having a sociable and welcoming atmosphere and plenty of social events, including shared table dining on on-shore pub crawl excursions.

Their Insider and Sea View cabins are priced attractively for people travelling solo - and Virgin Voyages email list subscribers are often notified of promotions on double occupancy rooms with no single supplement.

You can also book a single cabin onboard a Virgin Voyage cruise ship with their special solo cruise deals.

If you want to connect with other independent cruisers while onboard, the Virgin Voyages app allows passengers to connect virtually and team up for shared activities.

P&O Cruises: Large single cabins

For solo travellers seeking a touch of British charm on the high seas, P&O Cruises is a top option.

With a fleet of elegant ships and an array of itineraries, P&O Cruises allows solo adventurers to explore diverse destinations with fellow passengers.

They have dedicated Single cabins for independent cruisers with ample space and a comfortable single bed for a perfect night’s sleep at sea.

You’ll also find many complimentary activities onboard, including coffee mornings and drink receptions for solo travellers.

Each of their ships also has a casino, a theatre, live music, a fully equipped gym and a choice of pools and whirlpools to enjoy alone or with newfound cruise friends.

According to a study by Travelport, solo travel made up nearly 18% of global bookings in the travel industry.

Saga Cruises: Perfect for seasoned solo travellers

Award-winning Saga Cruises offers cruising adventures for the more mature traveller and has a welcoming environment for independent cruisers.

Their Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery are smaller vessels, making navigating the ship and connecting with fellow guests easy.

They also have a wide range of activities where you can meet other passengers, including a ‘singles mingle’ party on board, and they can link guests up with other solo adventurers to explore together during excursions.

The cruise line has a large selection of single cabins. The Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery have been designed with 109 single balcony cabins each, and more than 20% of the accommodation is reserved just for solo guests.

G Adventures: Small group adventures at sea

At G Adventures, sailing has always been popular for those exploring dream destinations like Peru and Antarctica . This small group adventure company doesn’t charge a single supplement and will pair travellers of the same sex together, so they aren’t penalised for travelling solo.

They even have two cabins built in their Reina Silvia Voyager vessel that takes guests on our Galápagos Islands Cruises so that solo travellers can get a room for themselves at a reduced rate.

Their smaller, more intimate vessels can get you off the beaten track and into local communities, providing a more authentic travel experience for solo cruisers. You’ll also be travelling with like-minded people on board with G Adventures, as over half of their ‘Marine’ bookers are solo travellers.

Carnival Cruise Line: Solo cruising alongside families

Carnival Cruise Line, particularly the Carnival Vista, is a smart choice for independent travellers at sea.

While Carnival is often associated with family-friendly cruising, they've made strides in accommodating solo travellers in recent years.

The ship offers various stateroom options for solo travellers, including the stylish Havana Cabanas.

These cabins provide a cosy and well-designed space and grant solo travellers access to the exclusive Havana Bar and Pool, creating a dynamic social hub for those cruising solo.

Royal Caribbean International: Organised activities for solo cruisers

Royal Caribbean has recognised the importance of fostering connections among solo cruisers and offers a program called "Connect with Others."

Through this initiative, they organise various activities, events, and meet-ups, creating a friendly and engaging atmosphere for solo travellers to bond.

The solo-friendly cruise line also features comfy studio staterooms. These rooms are designed specifically with independent explorers in mind and no single supplement fees.

Century Travel taking 2025 Marella Cruises bookings

Century Travel Group , the only cruise specialist in Cyprus, is pleased to announce that the well-known and well-loved British cruise line Marella Cruises will return to Cyprus in 2025.

Century Travel is the only Marella Cruises sales representative in Cyprus , with a dedicated team in place to serve island-based customers wishing to book Marella Discovery 2’s All Inclusive sailings from Limassol .

Plus, there are three new itineraries on offer:

  • Aegean Gems: calling at Kusadasi (Turkey), Mykonos (Greece), Piraeus (Greece), Souda (Greece) and Rhodes (Greece)

Marella’s British essence runs through its fleet of four family-friendly ships and one adults-only ship – from in-cabin tea-making supplies complete with kettles and Yorkshire tea bags, to roast dinners and Indian curries with entertainment.

Marella Discovery 2 , a relatively small ship carrying fewer than 2,000 passengers, is the sister ship of Marella Discovery, meaning it shares some of the same top-notch facilities. These include an outdoor cinema, a rock-climbing wall and a minigolf course. Not to mention, two pools – one indoor, the other outdoor – plus eight restaurants and a spa. Evocative Twenties-style glamour infuses the 800-guest Broadway Show Lounge, which offers West End-style performances every night, and, as this is a family ship, there’s also the Hideout, a teen hang-out spot, as well as a kids’ club, with Babytainment classes for parents and little ones.

“We’re excited to be launching our summer 2025 itineraries and basing Marella Discovery 2 out of Limassol,” said Chris Hackney, Managing Director of Cruise for TUI UK & Ireland . “We are always looking for new ways to improve and adapt our customer offering, and, with our highly-anticipated return to Cyprus, guests will be able to explore a wide range of ports and destinations on our new itineraries.”

Tomsk Flight Information

Fly to tomsk.

Travelers visiting Tomsk will find themselves in one of the oldest cities in Siberia, a place where history can be seen in everything from the architecture to the infrastructure. Tomsk's location along the Tom River was chosen for settlement because of its usefulness as a military outpost in the early 1600s.

Attractions

While you're in Tomsk, be sure to take a walk through Verhnyaya Yelan', a district that features traditional Russian wooden architecture and centuries-old mansions built by wealthy merchants. Climb to the top of Voskresenskaya Hill and view the city from above. The Governor's District was constructed in commemoration of the city's 400th anniversary. It includes a monument to author Anton Chekhov and the city's main cathedral. The Human Puppet Theater and the Cabbage Monument are also popular attractions in Tomsk.

Hints and tips

Travelers who fly to Tomsk will arrive at Tomsk Bogashevo Airport (TOF). Transport is available by taxi or bus. Weather varies widely by season, so check the weather report before you leave. Highs in the summer may reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit but are usually cooler on average with temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees. Temperatures commonly dip below zero in the winter. If you're visiting during soccer season, head to Trud Stadium to catch a Russian Premier Football League contest.

Frequently asked questions

  • S7 Airlines - 35 flights to Tomsk per month
  • Aeroflot - 17 flights to Tomsk per month
  • Pobeda - 5 flights to Tomsk per month
  • Depending on where you’re taking off from, click on the ‘Nearby airports’ function (located under the departure and arrival options). On occasion, other departure points will have cheaper fares.
  • Also, click on the ‘Show flexible dates’ option and you’ll see the prices for days around your selected departure. It’s possible to find cheaper flight deals if you’re flexible with your plans.
  • You can also use the ‘Show options’ link to filter results for your preferred airline, seating class, nonstop flights and refundable flights. Under ‘Sort & Filter’ to the left, you can even choose the time of day you’d like to fly.
  • Book your airfare as soon as you’ve sorted your travel dates. While you can get lucky once in a while, flights rarely get cheaper as your departure date nears.
  • Consider bundling your flights, hotels and car rentals into an Orbitz package — the more you book, the more you save.
  • Flying during peak season often means costly airfares. If possible, plan your trip outside of popular dates, such as Easter, Thanksgiving and school breaks.
  • Moscow (DME-Domodedovo Intl.) to Bogashevo Airport (TOF) - 4 hours and 10 minutes
  • Moscow (SVO-Sheremetyevo) to Bogashevo Airport (TOF) - 4 hours and 10 minutes
  • Novosibirsk (OVB-Tolmachevo) to Bogashevo Airport (TOF) - 50 minutes
  • In all cases you’ll need a form of identification. How much? This depends on which airport you take off from. When booking your flight, you are encouraged to type in the same name, gender and birth date as written on your government-issued ID.
  • Bring a good book or a tablet filled with your favorite TV series — it’ll help to pass time on your long journey to Tomsk. Or if you’d rather get some rest, a comfy eye mask will shield you from those bright cabin lights.
  • Long-haul voyages can leave you feeling seriously cold, especially if you’re flying overnight. If you don’t want to stay awake shivering for the length of your journey, pack a jacket and some wool socks.
  • Flexibility is key. By being open to a variety of travel dates, you’ll have a better chance of finding a deal on first or business-class airfares.
  • Find a low-cost airline that has business-class seats. They usually come with extra space and a glass of bubbly — and a more affordable price.
  • Bid for an upgrade in online auctions (if available) or upgrade through your frequent flyer program.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukrainian sea drones destroy Russian ship near Crimea

Ukrainian sea drones have damaged a Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship off Crimea, according to Ukrainian intelligence. Meanwhile, Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman has reportedly said German journalists will have to leave Russia if Berlin takes measures against Russian journalists.

  • Explained: What do we know about the leaked German military recording?
  • Analysis: How damaging is German phone call leak?
  • Live reporting by Bhvishya Patel

By Adam Parsons , Europe correspondent

Boris Pistorius, the German defence minister, was putting in a determined effort to limit the damage and restore confidence in his country.

Germany is Europe's richest country, after all - a bulwark of the European Union and NATO. And yet, he knows that, right now, allies worry that it's not a reliable partner.

Despite spending a huge amount of money on supporting Ukraine, Germany has somehow ended up with a reputation for being cautious and unsure.

If anything, that's probably down to the character of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is still dithering over his decision about whether to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

That's the background.

Then came this leak of information, which Pistorius blames on an "information war" being waged by Russia.

But, in fact, it turns out that a very senior German air force leader, while visiting an air show in Singapore, dialled into a secure channel using insecure means, and because of that the call got recorded. It's not exactly James Bond stuff.

Pistorius says the communications system "is not compromised" and said the leak was instead down to "an individual error" but that he won't be pushed into firing anyone "by Putin's games". But that's not really the problem.

Instead, this leak has emboldened Russia to spread division among allies and, perhaps, to muddle Scholz's thinking even more. It's worried allies, who were already quietly worried about leaks within German intelligence.

And it's damaged political relationships within and without his country. Scholz's popularity has plummeted in recent months, and his ruling coalition is under strain. What he needed was a period of calm, focused leadership. Instead, he's in another storm.

One of the participants on Germany's leaked military call dialled via a non-secure line and disciplinary measures are being looked into, Germany's defence minister has said.

Presenting the first results of the investigation, Boris Pistorius said Russia had likely intercepted the military call by chance via widespread surveillance, and not through a spy or any compromised German systems.

"Our communication systems have not been compromised," Mr Pistorius said.

"The reason the air force call could nonetheless be recorded was because of an individual's operational mistake."

Mr Pistorius said the specific participant had dialled in from Singapore where an air show was taking place.

"So we must assume that the access to this Webex conference was a chance hit in the framework of a broad, scattered approach," the minister added.

He also said use of Webex for the call was authorised.

For context : Over the weekend, a recording was leaked of a conversation between high-ranking German officers where they discussed the country's Ukraine war strategy.

The top officers also discussed how the air force could provide technical support for the delivery of Taurus missiles in a hypothetical situation.

The conversation also referenced British soldiers on the ground in Ukraine.

German authorities confirmed the authenticity of the recording, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling the leak a "very serious matter".

However, defence minister Boris Pistorius suggested Russia had used a level of "choreography".

He claimed the leak was timed to deflect attention away from Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's funeral

A Russian advance outside the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka has been contained but Moscow's troops are regrouping in an area further south, Ukraine's military has said.

The capture of Avdiivka last month prompted Vladimir Putin to pledge that Moscow's forces would make further advances.

Russia's defence ministry later said its forces had captured new villages outside Avdiivka.

Now, Ukrainian military spokesperson Dmytro Lykhoviy has acknowledged that Russian forces are in partial control of two more villages but says their advances have been halted.

"At the same time, we are saying that in this hottest sector of the direct Russian assault, we are managing to stabilise the situation and the enemy's advance has been halted," he said.

The capture of Avdiivka after months of fighting was Russia's biggest gain in nine months, though the frontlines have undergone only limited movement in that time.

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman has said German journalists will have to leave Russia if Berlin takes measures against Russian journalists there, RIA news agency reports.

Maria Zakharova made the comments after Germany's ambassador in Russia was reportedly summoned yesterday over a leaked recording of a conversation between high-ranking German officers. In the recording, they discussed the country's Ukraine war strategy and the potential to supply new missiles.

Upon being summoned, Russia says Alexander Graf Lambsdorff was given stern words over alleged attempts by Berlin to restrict the activities of Russian journalists in Germany.

"If they touch Russian correspondents and bring their plans to conclusion, German journalists will leave Russia," Ms Zakharova said.

Germany later said Mr Lambsdorff was not summoned and the meeting was pre-planned.

Yesterday, German authorities confirmed the authenticity of the leaked recording, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling the leak a "very serious matter".

He claimed the leak was timed to deflect attention away from Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's funeral.

Ukrainian sea drones have damaged a Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship off occupied Crimea, Ukraine's military intelligence has reported this morning.

The intelligence agency said on Telegram  that its special unit attacked the Sergey Kotov ship near the Kerch Strait.

"As a result of a strike by Magura V5 maritime drones, the Russian ship Project 22160 Sergey Kotov sustained damage to the stern, starboard and port sides," it said.

The message added that the ship was worth about $65m.

Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, has said on Telegram that "the Russian Black Sea Fleet is a symbol of occupation" and that "it cannot be in the Ukrainian Crimea", in an apparent reference to the strike.

Train traffic was temporarily stopped on the bridge linking the Crimean peninsula to the Russian mainland, according to reports.

We'll be bringing you live updates throughout the day as the fallout continues over a leaked discussion between high ranking German military officers.

A prominent Russian journalist released audio of the German officers discussing the country's war strategy - something that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described as a "very serious matter".

Meanwhile, our military analyst Sean Bell said Russia had likely released details of its interception in a bid to prevent Germany from sending its Taurus missiles to Ukraine (these were discussed in the recording).

Elsewhere, UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi is set to visit Russia - and may hold talks with Vladimir Putin.

Before we bring you the latest updates, here's more news from the last 24 hours...

  • Germany rejected reports Russia had summoned its ambassador over the leak incident;
  • Albania reopened a Soviet-era air base in a boost to NATO's presence in the region;
  • Ukraine claimed a civilian was killed by cluster munitions in the Zaporizhzhia region;
  • US airman Jake Teixeira plead guilty to leaking Pentagon documents containing sensitive information on Ukraine;
  • Two first responders were killed in a secondary Russian strike as they worked to put out a fire, Ukraine's interior minister said.

The map below shows the territorial picture in Ukraine...

We'll be back soon to bring you the latest updates on the war in Ukraine.

You can scroll back through the blog to read what happened today.

Ukraine and Spain have begun discussions on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office.

Officials discussed the structure of the future deal and agreed a schedule for further negotiations.

More than 30 countries have already joined the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, including the UK, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Members of the G7 presented a plan for long-term security commitments for Ukraine at the NATO summit in July last year.

The plan agrees individual countries will provide bilateral support to help Ukraine push back against the Russian invasion and deter future aggression.

They also cover areas such as sanctions, financial aid and post-war reconstruction.

A leading Belarusian human rights group has said thousands of people in the country have been convicted on politically driven charges over the last three years.

The Viasna human rights centre said at least 4,690 people have been convicted on politically motivated charges since the August 2020 presidential election that fuelled major protests.

The actual figure could be higher as activists don't know all the convicts' names, the group said.

A spokesperson for Viasna, Pavel Sapelka, said the scale of repression in Belarus is even broader than in neighbouring Russia.

He said at least 1,300 people faced criminal investigation on political grounds last year alone.

"Even a suspicion of disloyalty is enough to trigger political repressions," he said.

The contentious 2020 vote, which handed President Alexander Lukashenko his sixth term in office, had caused mass protests which authorities responded to with sweeping crackdowns.

More than 35,000 people were arrested at the time and thousands beaten in police custody.

Mr Lukashenko has relied on subsidies and political support from his main ally, Russia, to survive the protests.

He then allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to send troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

Two rescuers have been killed as they were putting out a fire caused by an earlier attack, Ukraine's interior minister has said.

The strike on the Kramatorsk area, in the eastern region of Donetsk, also injured a further three first responders.

Oleg Martynenko and Bohdan Ravlyk, aged 29 and 31, were named as the two men who died.

Interior minister Ihor Klymenko said: "Our rescuers have no weapons, they risked their lives so that others could live."

The State Emergency Service's spokesman, Oleksandr Khorunzhyi, said in August last year that over 70 Ukrainian rescuers had been killed in Russian attacks while doing their job.
