Answer. You just need to brief yourself in short, crisp, and clear. The Interviewers want to know how you can describe yourself.

Well done! It’s now time to research tips for your cruise ship interview so you can be fully prepared.

The type of interview that you may have will depend on how you applied. You either applied directly to the Cruise Line or you decided to do the Recruitment Agency route.

There are many processes to the interview sequence. Some people find they have an initial brief phone call and then a more in-depth interview over Skype , while others find they have their interview straight over Skype or similar. Some people may even have an in person interview depending on their location.

For me I had 3 Skype interviews. The first one was with the recruitment agency and the last two interviews was with the Cruise Line itself. Each interview lasted around 30 minutes.

Below are my cruise ship interview tips for getting through the interview process as smoothly as possible. I am setting it out based on my experience of the process.

Interview With An Agency

The first interview I had was with the agency. This was just an overview of the job and of my capabilities to be able to work away from home. The likelihood is that you will have an interview with an agency first. When being interviewed by an agency you want to:

Ask as many questions as you want such as:

  • What are the duties of the position
  • Which job would suit your skills
  • What type of training will be provided
  • Any possibility for promotion
  • What type of uniform

You could even ask if they know what the following interview/s will be about, because this first interview is more of a warm up for the following ones, you may only have one more, but you might also have another two if you’re like me.

Second and Last Interview

After my agency interview I went on to have 2 more interviews. For both I really needed to know my stuff so the information below will help you fully prepare for these 2 interviews.

Preparation Is Key

As with any interview you take in life you need to be prepared. Learn a little about the company, to find this information just take a browse on their website.

Your CV/Resume

This should be an obvious one – make sure you know what is on your resume and can easily answer any questions about your previous jobs, work experience, skills and educational history.

You will need to know about the job you applied for. Your agency should of sent you all the information you need to know about the role, but it’s also a good idea to have a google search as well.

Take the time to learn about their work ethic and work code. There are different types of work code different Cruise Liners go by. Make sure you know the one your company goes by. Learn the demographics of the people who the Cruise Line caters for. You should know the passengers that you will be serving.

Anything Else

Learn anything else you can about the Cruise Line like new ships that are being built or when new ships will be scheduled to sale. Basically know your company inside out before you even speak to them! Read up on the latest cruise news as well.

Rules & Regulations

Make sure you understand some of the basic rules and regulations that will be expected of you.

You won’t be expected to know all the ins and outs but you should know the basic rules beforehand like the fact there are no full days off, you can’t socialize with passengers outside public areas and there is an alcohol limit too. The Cruise ship will have a zero dugs/violence policy and you will be immediately fired if you break the rules.

Ensuring you have a good grasp of the rules beforehand will set you up well. Knowledge is power and it will help you be confident in your answers to any questions thrown at you.

The cruise ship will have its own lingo so try to know some of these beforehand otherwise you make be asking the interviewer for an explanation when they are trying to explain things to you. This will not look good.

Some vocabulary to learn beforehand could be:

  • Bow: Front of ship
  • Stern: Back of ship
  • Port Side: Left side of the ship
  • Starboard Side: Right hand side of the ship

Hygiene is a HUGE deal. It plays such a huge part when it comes to working onboard. Try to familiarize yourself with their hygiene practices and what guidelines need to be followed.

Think About What You Want To Convey

It is a good idea to go over what you would like to say and convey to whoever is interviewing you.

You want to come across as hardworking, dedicated and resilient. You want to show that you are a team player and socialable. You want to show that you can cope in difficult situations and you are prepared.

Things You Will Likely Be Asked About

The preparation info above should set you up nicely to answer any questions they may have for you. You can expect them to ask you about a lot of the things. Take some time to think about how you can spin it to make you look like the best candidate for the job.

  • Past Work Experience – Try to use your past work to convey your ability to provide a friendly and efficient customer experience. It’s a good idea to go over what you have done in the past and how the skills you gained from each type of employment are useful for the cruise ship.
  • Challenges & Difficult Situations – Customer service can be quite challenging. The likelihood is you will be asked questions about what challenges you have encountered in your job roles and how you have overcome them and resolved them. I am sure if you took the time, you could come up with several different scenarios of how you dealt with a customer professionally, empathically and resolved the situation to the customer’s satisfaction. You could probably come up with other relatable experiences in other professions that aren’t so customer service specific by looking at your relationships with other colleagues.
  • Personal life – You will be asked about your personal life and any commitments you have. Some people sign a contract only to drop out earlier than expected due to commitments or frankly because they can’t hack cruise ship life. Make sure you come across as dedicated to the job and that your partner/family understand the situation and will not prevent you from completing a contract.

You must show you have the ability to be away from home for an extended period of time so if you have done some travelling alone already this experience would be hugely beneficial to put across.

  • Being on a Ship – You will definitely be asked about your understanding and thoughtfulness around the unique challenges that a cruise ship job involves. This is when all that research you did can really come in handy, as you explain how you have spoken to others and listened to the unique situations they have encountered and how this has prepared you for what the job entails.

What Not To Say

Sometimes we can forget ourselves or get overly nervous and say the dumbest things. Here are a few things you want to avoid aluding to in yuour interview:

  • Don’t say you only want to do one contract (even if it is true!)
  • Don’t mention how you hate long hours, as that is what you will be doing
  • Don’t say anything negative about any aspect of the work you will be doing.
  • Don’t bad mouth past colleagues, this does not look good at all particularly as you will be joining a TEAM.

Lastly…

Wear a shirt, smile a lot, relax and be confident. You have got this. It isn’t that bad!

Many people dream of working on a cruise ship. Navigating the seas, visiting new places, spending time with rich people, and getting a decent monthly compensation for doing it–cruise ship doesn’t seem like a bad place of work…. But how can you start working on a ship? Where should you apply? And what will happen in an interview with the cruise ship company? We will try to answer the questions in the following paragraphs.

Languages matter, experience doesn’t

Before we look at the step by step guide that will take you from your home to a board of an amazing ship, let’s talk briefly about job requirements. You do not need any special skills , or relevant working experience, to get a job on a ship.

The only requirement are your language skills–you should speak at least two languages . English and German, English and Spanish, and sometimes English and one of the Scandinavian languages, is a perfect combination for this position. You may sometimes do with one language (when you apply for job on a ship that cruises only in US waters, for example), but in such a case you will need to do really well in your interview.

Step by step guide – from your home to cruise ship

Step 1. visit the web pages of cruise ship companies, apply for the job..

There are more than ten big cruise ship companies operating around the world, and more than twenty smaller companies. All of them have their corporate website, and with some of them, you can apply for a job online. Fill the job application, attach your resume, and do it in a right way . What is the right way? On your application, you should stress that :

  • You are used to spend a lot of time out of home, and you never feel homesick.
  • You do not suffer from seasickness, and actually feel good on the water.
  • You are used to listen to the orders, and do not mind routine and repetitive jobs.
  • To work on a cruise ship has always been one of your dreams, but you understand it goes about a difficult job.
  • You can speak the languages required for the job, on a decent level. And if you can not at the moment, you do your best to learn them before starting the job.
  • You have at least some experience related to the job (a chambermaid, waitress, etc), and if you do not have and experience, you are ready to learn and work hard.

Step 2. If you can not get a job directly with the cruise ship company, look for recruitment agencies that work with these companies.

Many companies outsource their recruitment, and there are at least seven recruiting agencies that specialize only in cruise ship recruitment . Look for the agencies that get a one time fee from the employer , agencies that won’t take a cut from your salary each and every month.

If this is not clearly defined on their website, call them and ask. In some countries you will be the one who pays the fee (which is illegal in some other countries, and agencies can not ask any money from you), but it is still better to pay a one time commission then to earn 30% less each month , just because a greedy agency takes a heavy cut from your salary each month.

You should apply with few agencies at the same time . Job search is a game of numbers, and waiting for a final reply from one agency can easily jeopardize your plan to start working on the ship the upcoming summer. Apply with three to five agencies, and wait for their reply.

Step 3. Try to use your connections.

Personal referral is an easiest way to get a job on a ship . Polish your address books, check Facebook profiles of your former schoolmates, look at LinkedIn, talk to people around you. Is anyone working on a cruise ship? Did anyone work there before? Do they still have the number of their supervisor, or a person from an agency that helped them to get a job? They may hand you a helping hand, or at least a phone number of someone you should call to….

If you fail to get a job directly with the company, or with an agency, you should definitely explore this option. Personal referrals count for more than 30% of new hires on cruise ships . You should not take this number lightly…

Step 4. Ace your interview.

Once you finally get a chance to talk to the HR manager, or an agency recruiter ( cruise ship interviews are often done online , on the phone, or on Skype), you should try to get the most out of this opportunity . Prepare for the common interview questions, speak with enthusiasm, show them the value you can bring to their team . Second temporary passage clears way for additional small vessels past Key Bridge collapse site in Baltimore

BALTIMORE --  A second temporary passage was cleared Tuesday for commercial and essential ships in the Patapsco River following the collapse of the Key Bridge.

The 14-foot channel along the south of the disaster site will allow marine vessels access to the Port of Baltimore. An 11-foot channel, 264-feet wide, opened on Monday on the northeast side.

A fuel barge and scrap barge already made their way through that passageway.

"I'm thankful that only a week after the collapse, we have pathways and channels so commercial traffic can now move through," Moore said.

The Tugboat Crystal Coast, pushing a fuel barge, was the first vessel to move through the original alternate channel on Monday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. It was headed to Dover Air Force Base with jet fuel.    

Larger ships still can't pass

Governor Moore said larger ships need at least 35 feet of depth and a path at least 700-feet wide to move through to the Port of Baltimore. When clear, the depth of the river where the Dali crashed into the bridge is 50 feet.

"We are still a long way from getting the size and commercial back to where it was before the collapse," Moore said.

"Today was an important milestone in the process of beginning to pull the wreckage out, beginning to open channels. We know we still have work to do," he added.

A deeper third channel is in the works that would provide 25 feet of depth.

"I anticipate smaller draft commercial vessels, maybe some small tugs in the next few days," U.S. Coast Guard Captain David O'Connell said. "That's that 13 to 14 foot draft, but unfortunately, that's not a lot of vessels. But it certainly is a start on our way to phase three, which will hopefully get us to 20 to 25 foot draft and that would be a lot more commercial vessels."

Dangerous work

Moore said untangling the mangled mess of debris remains dangerous.

"We're talking about a situation where a portion of the bridge beneath the water has been described by Unified Command as 'chaotic wreckage,'" Moore said. "Every time someone goes into the water, they are taking a risk. Every time we move a piece of the structure, the situation could become even more dangerous. We have to move fast but we cannot be careless." 

Debris removal continues

The Unified Response team is continuing the difficult job of cutting away pieces of what remains of the Key Bridge, which collapsed when it was struck by the cargo ship Dali last week.

The salvage teams are working in a phased approach to opening the main channel, according to Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott's office.

The current 2,000-yard safety zone around the Francis Scott Key Bridge remains in effect and is intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment. No vessel or person will be permitted to enter the safety zone without obtaining permission from the COTP or a designated representative, the mayor's office said.

A survey is also underway to determine how hard the ground is around the Dali to help come up with a strategy for removal.

Who is working at the bridge disaster site?

The Unified Command is comprised of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Transportation Authority, Maryland State Police, and business consultant Witt O'Brien's, which is representing Synergy Marine, the Singapore company that managed the striking ship.

The governor's office tells WJZ the cleanup effort at the wreckage site of the Key Bridge will be a "round-the-clock" effort until the Port of Baltimore is back open.

Moore said the priorities are recovering the four remaining victims, clearing the channel to open vessel traffic for the port, and supporting to those impacted by the disaster.

State and federal organizations are already working to  provide economic assistance  to individuals and small businesses that have been impacted by the collapse. 

Tradepoint Atlantic takes cargo to assist Port of Baltimore

Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point is taking redirected cargo to assist the Port of Baltimore until the channels are cleared for all vessels.

Its marine terminal is accepting previously scheduled arrivals, while also providing additional capacity for redirected cargo.

Tradepoint Atlantic officials say they are "committed to accepting redirected cargo to help maintain the supply chain and re-establish commercial activity."

A five-acre facility has also been cleared at TPA to store and process recovered bridge material.

CSX to redirect cargo to NY as Port of Baltimore remains closed

CSX added a new freight route to transport cargo to New York while the Port of Baltimore remains closed to larger ships. 

"CSX is taking proactive steps to help mitigate freight shipment disruptions in the transportation industry by launching a dedicated service solution between Baltimore and New York, in response to the devastating March 26 incident in which a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge leading to its collapse," the train company said.

The routes will be implemented next week to help with managing the traffic flow that would typically transit through the Port of Baltimore and transport freight between New York and Baltimore.

"While the timeline for resuming freight operations at the Port of Baltimore remains uncertain, we are in constant communication with our customers, providing timely updates on the status of their shipments," CSX said. "CSX is fully dedicated to meeting our customers' transportation needs during this challenging period."

Aid sought for impacted workers

Eight people , part of a construction crew filling potholes, were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two were rescued, two bodies have been recovered, and four remain missing and are presumed dead. 

"My focus is on making sure these families are getting the comfort and the closure that they need, making sure that our first responders are getting the supports that they need, making sure that we can get these channels open and making sure that we can get this Key Bridge rebuilt," Moore said.

Maryland lawmakers are working on emergency legislation for  income replacement  to assist thousands of Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the disruption. 

President Biden to visit Baltimore

President Joe Biden is set to visit Baltimore on Friday, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

The announcement follows Biden's vow last week to visit Baltimore following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. 

The president also said he believes the federal government should pay for the bridge reconstruction.

A group of cruise ship passengers were stranded on an African island. What happened?

An American couple who endured traveling through seven countries in 48 hours to catch up to a cruise ship that left them at a previous port said they may not re-board the boat.

A 21-day dream cruise along the coast of Africa turned into an international ordeal for couple Jill and Jay Campbell and a group of six other passengers after they said they were left behind during a tour stop on an African island off the coast of Nigeria.

What happened to the cruise ship passengers?

Six Americans and two Australians were on a privately-run excursion on the island of Sao Tome on March 30 and were supposed to be back by 3 p.m. local time, according to the couple.

When they didn't make it back in time due to what they said were issues with the tour, their Norwegian Cruise Line ship left without them.

The Campbells, who are from Garden City, South Carolina, told NBC News their tour operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late rejoining the ship, but the vessel left anyway. They added that the island's coast guard tried to get them and several others to the cruise ship, but they said they weren't allowed to board.

The stranded guests made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the vessel could not safely dock there due to "adverse weather conditions," Norwegian said.

The couple then had to make their way from Sao Tome to Dakar, Senegal, where the cruise ship was docked on April 2.

“It’s one of those, ‘You can’t get there from here,’” Jay Campbell said on TODAY on April 2. “I think we flew through six countries just to get to Gambia yesterday.”

When will the passengers return home?

The couple traveled through seven countries in a 48-hour period to reach Senegal, according to Jill Campbell.

Following that ordeal, they said they aren’t sure if they’re going to board the ship again to rejoin the cruise.

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly,” Jill Campbell said.

“I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first," she said.

“We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about so it does concern us.”

What has Norwegian cruises said?

Norwegian Cruise Line told NBC News in a statement that the Campbells’ situation was unfortunate, saying “guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time” and noting the group was on a privately-run tour.

The Campbells were thankful for the people of Sao Tome as they tried to navigate how they were going to catch up to the ship.

"It’s a very difficult process," Jay Campbell said. "You’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers.

"You’re dealing with different currencies, currency exchanges, finding someone that even has dollars, taking dollars, the minimum amount that we had, trying to convert them to local currency, (and) trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to."

After three hours of pirates, explosions, and lots of water , 9-1-1 fans finally know who survived the epic, three-part season 7 premiere .

"It all happened really fast," co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear tells Entertainment Weekly of completing the cruise ship disaster episodes. "It was very difficult, and you always have that moment where you're just like, 'Am I going to be able to pull this off?'"

It may have felt quick, but getting Bobby ( Peter Krause ) and Athena ( Angela Bassett ) out of that sinking vessel actually took months of filming... and none of it on an actual cruise ship. As the series moves forward on dry land (though on one very wet driveway, with the Bachelor crossover coming next week ), we asked Minear to break down the deadly three-epsiode event, reveal what ideas never made it to air, and tease what's to come in the rest of season 7.

TIM MINEAR: Shooting Bobby and Athena on a honeymoon cruise was more challenging than many things I've done on this show in the last seven seasons. We never got an actual cruise ship, so we had to shoot in hotels and on different types of vessels, and then [use] special effects and CGI. But just the idea of that surprised me. I thought that would be easy: You'd rent a cruise ship, you'd shoot on it for three days, you'd get a lot of stuff on the decks. But it just didn't turn out that way. It was very difficult to get a cruise ship. No cruise line wanted to be associated with a capsized ship, which I guess I can understand.

Well it all made for a very dramatic three episodes. So many massive sets, so much rising water.

The water's not actually rising, the set is sinking! The set was built on a gimbal inside a water tank. We would slowly lower the set into the tank, and it gives the effect that the water's rising around them. And the casino set.... The lowering of the table with Norman [played by Daniel Roebuck] on it, that was complicated to write, and it was very complicated to shoot. But that's Peter up there. Peter is climbing across those ropes up there — that delighted me.

The other thing that absolutely delighted me was that Angela Bassett was game for anything. She went into that water. When the bomb goes off in episode 2, and she goes flying against that wall, she actually did it! There's a stunt woman in there too, but Angela, she was game for anything.

Was there anything you wanted to do with this disaster that you weren't able to?

There was one scene that I did have to cut, that I was sad to cut. It was when Wes [played by Denzel Johnson] opens the door and that fireball comes out. Originally in the script, they still continued in that direction, and when they looked into that room, it was an upside down restaurant and the water was on fire. And so it's like, "How do we get to the other side of the restaurant and stop the gas that is feeding this fire?" And in the scene, in the script, Lola [played by Romy Rosemont] actually dives under the fire and swims under the water to turn it off. It was very Shelley Winters [in The Poseidon Adventure .]

Time and money just prohibited that from happening, so I made a little bit more of Wes' death. And then did give Lola an opportunity to retrieve the flare gun later in the episode, so she still got to go underwater. But that was a moment that I was sad to lose. And I know Romy was too, but she still got a little bit of action there at the end.

So now that Bobby and Athena are rescued, what can you tease about the rest of the season?

I just finished locking episode 4 and I was like, "Hmm, there's no natural disasters. Things aren't blowing up all over the place." But there is the Bachelor crossover, so we have that to look forward to. And now we get to spend a little time breathing with the 118 and dig into their personal stories a little bit more. Yeah, I don't know how much I should spoil.... Definitely a beloved character will be returning in episode 4, I can put it that way....

One couple from Garden City is currently stranded 5,960 miles from their South Carolina home.

Jill and Jay Campbell boarded a Norwegian cruise last Wednesday, March 20.

They're frequent Norwegian Cruise Line passengers. In fact, they’ve already traveled with them three times this year.

However, this week, their vacation took a turn for the worse when they were on a tour.

The Campbells were on what was supposed to be a memorable cruise, and now it is for all the wrong reasons.

We have never had an experience like this before," said Jill Campbell

On Wednesday, the Campbells and six other people were on a tour in São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island off of western Africa; but the tour was longer than expected.

"We were like, 'Our time is getting really short,' and they were like- ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,'" said Jay Campbell, who's also a volunteer football coach at St. James High School.

They said the tour operator contacted the captain to let them know that the eight passengers were going to be late and they were on their way.

When they arrived at the port, the ship was still anchored but the captain refused to let them on board.

The harbor master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number, they said ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails, said Jay Campbell.

Eventually, the São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard loaded all eight passengers on a boat and took them to the anchored ship. They said the captain told the Coast Guard to take the passengers back to the island.

The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way," said Jay Campbell.

After numerous attempts of trying to get ahold of Norwegian, the group is now scrambling to figure out how to get back on the ship to get home.

The group consists of seven Americans and two Australians, four of whom are elderly, one has a heart condition and another is a paraplegic. There’s another married couple from Delaware and the wife is pregnant.

The number of stranded passengers rose from eight to nine after the group eventually met another 80-year-old woman, who they said was hospitalized on the island after she got a concussion and lost part of her vision following a cruise line tour.

The Campbells said she was left at the hospital without any money or her belongings, and her emergency contact was never notified by the cruise line.

"I truly believe sometimes we’re put in certain places for a reason and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman that was left alone. God forbid, what would have happened to that lady if we were not here,” Jay Campbell said.

None of the other passengers have their medications or credit cards that are accepted on the island.

The Campbells are the only ones with a Visa card and they’ve paid over $5,000 in food, toiletries and hotels for the group.

While they’re almost 6,000 miles away from home, Jay is just happy to have Jill by his side.

This woman has been a saint. I don’t know where the whole group would be without her strength, guidance and compassion for others," Jay said. "I’m honored and blessed that I have the smartest woman next to me.

They received help from the U.S. Embassy in Angola. On Sunday, the group is flying to Gambia, another African nation. However, they can only get on the ship if the cruise line approves their request.

The Campbells said they haven’t heard back at all.

The Campbells are grateful for the help that they have received from the people of São Tomé and Príncipe.

They ask for prayers as they travel to the Gambia on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line gave ABC15 the following statement:

On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in Sao Tome and Principe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on their own or with a private tour missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time. While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.
Guests are responsible for any necessary travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port. Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. We are in communication with the guests and providing additional information as it becomes available.

A couple says they were stranded on a small African island after they missed a cruise ship 's boarding deadline, according to local media.

Jay and Jill Campbell, from Garden City, South Carolina, described their ordeal with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in an interview with WPDE, their local ABC affiliate.

Norwegian confirmed to Business Insider that they were denied boarding, saying it was their responsibility to be on time.

The Campbells said they were frequent cruisers, embarking on Norwegian Dawn on March 20 for their third voyage with the cruise line in a year.

However, an excursion last Wednesday with six other people to São Tomé and Príncipe , an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, took an unfortunate turn.

The couple says the tour overran, and its operator informed the captain that eight passengers were running late.

They were refused entry to the ship upon their return, according to WPDE, even though they could still see the ship from the shore.

The ship was anchored, Jay Campbell said, but the captain refused to let them board despite repeated calls and emails by the passengers to the ship and the cruise line's emergency hotline.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard even took the passengers to the ship, but they weren't able to get on and had to turn back, WPDE reported.

In total, WPDE said that nine passengers were not allowed to reenter the ship, including four elderly people and one person who is a paraplegic.

The Campbells told the news outlet that the ninth passenger was late for another reason — an 80-year-old woman who got a concussion on the island and was hospitalized there.

Most of the stranded passengers didn't have their medication or working credit cards, WPDE said.

The Campbells, who had a working card, said they covered $5,000 worth of expenses for the group in food, toiletries, and hotel bills.

"We have never had an experience like this before," Jill Campbell told WPDE.

The Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement provided to BI by email that eight guests on the tour missed the last tender back to the vessel.

The cruise line said the passengers missed the "all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time." It said it was a "very unfortunate situation" but that passengers were responsible for being on time.

It added that the deadline to return was "communicated broadly" over the ship's intercom, in printed communications, and on posts shown at the exits of the ship.

The elderly passenger who was concussed was returned to the US, where she has made a "safe return," a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.

According to WPDE, the group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to rejoin the ship at another port.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said that the ship could not safely dock in Gambia due to adverse weather conditions, adding that efforts are being made for the guests to rejoin the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

Though cruise ships need to stay punctual, ruined-vacation stories like this are a reputational risk and might put people off.

For instance, two MSC Splendida passengers were stranded last summer at an Italian port after arriving too late for departure.

A TikTok video showed the couple waving and begging the crew to wait for them, even though the gangway appeared to have already been removed.

Other passengers may face the stress of becoming stranded in remote locations through no fault of their own. Last September, more than 200 people got stuck in a remote part of Greenland after their cruise ship ran aground.

And last November, passengers were stranded at a Brisbane port after a Royal Caribbean ship was overbooked.
