  • The Moon Plains (Sanda Thenna)

An attraction in Nuwara Eliya.

Nuwara Eliya city and its suburbs are frequent tourist attractions. The place called Moon Plains or Sandathenna which was established in 2013  is a newly added place with elegant beauty. To get to this place, you must move along Nuwara Eliya Badulla main road parallel to Gregory Lake and at the end of the lake, a signboard with  Moon plains can be seen. Having taken the left turn, we should proceed about 3 km passing the government seed potato farm.

As the track that leads to this place is muddy, sloppy, and bumpy, private vehicles are not permitted to enter the park. There is a safari jeep service that costs you Rs2000 per jeep which can facilitate eight to ten people. The jeep ride of nearly thirty minutes will be an unforgettable experience with spectacular scenes. The plain with lush green, the cold weather, and the beautiful mountains will make you feel that you are passing the road to heaven.

At the end of the journey is a place with a circular stage on concrete pillars with a staircase. You can take a 360-degree view across the whole area. Completely nine mountains can be viewed in eight different directions. They are Single tree, Piduruthalagala, Kikiliyamana, Namunukula

Hakgala, Great Western, Kirigalpoththa, Thotupala, Konical, and Singletree There is also a small game reserve that is inhabited by a few kinds of animals and 90 species of birds. The mini world’s end, the view of the city of Nuwara Eliya, and the lush green tea estates that stretch far and far add everlasting memories. The days free from the mist is the best to see this place.

A 400 m long and 30-40 meter deep valley was part of a 5.8 ha catchment until the 1990’s pertaining to moon plains.  The municipal council of Nuwara Eliya used 2.0 ha of the 5.8 ha catchment as the open dump site to dispose of all the trash from Nuwara Eliya.  In 2003, it was converted with the help of the JICA foundation to a level 3 sanitary landfill.

To each Moon Plains one needs to go along the road to the Government Potato Seed Farm in Nuwara Eliya which is on the upper lake road. Or else one could also drive past Lake Gregory’s main road and then branch off at Magastota to reach the Potato Farm. Visitors could enter the Plains from 7.00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all seven days of the week. Locals could pay Rs. 50/- per ticket while foreigners are charged Rs. 200/-.

Take a hike on the Moon Plains

Surrounded by the jagged peaks of Sri Lanka’s central highlands are the beautiful slopes of Moon Plains. This carpet of verdant greenery can be absolutely amazing to hike through and explore – a definite bucket list activity if you’re touring through Nuwara Eliya and its vicinity.

The Moon Plains is only a recently-opened attraction and was actually the site of a garbage dump once. This site – located just a few minutes away from Nuwara Eliya City – was reconditioned in 2010 and transformed into the picturesque plains of greenery that you see today. In fact, it is now classified as an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone by the Municipality of Nuwara Eliya.

The best thing about hiking along the moon plains are the sights you’ll be seeing. The mountains that surround the plains are spectacular and awe-inspiring to look at – what’s more, they seem to go on forever as far as the eye can see. You can also visit the “Mini World’s End” while you’re here. This is located at the apex of a sheer cliff face that gives you an excellent view of the surrounding area.

A variety of wildlife also call the Moon Plains home, so keep your eyes peeled for them. The most common species you’re likely to encounter are wild sambar deer. Aside from these grazers, you might also run into water buffalo, spotted deer and even the shy and elusive Sri Lankan leopard! The plains are also a great spot for birdwatching as well. Many endemic and migratory species frequent the region, so be sure to bring your binoculars with you.
