OSU Faculty-Led Programs

If you are interested in an international experience led by OSU faculty and in the company of fellow OSU students, consider a  faculty-led program . Faculty-led programs offer students the opportunity to pursue coursework in specific areas of study and for periods of time developed around OSU's academic calendar. Faculty-led programs are great matches for students looking for more support while abroad, and for those who have limited or no foreign language background.

OSU University Exchanges

If you are seeking a study abroad experience that is highly independent and culturally immersed, an exchange may be right for you. Exchange participants enroll directly at one of our partner universities and take classes with local students. Instruction is generally in the language of the host country. Some partner institutions are in English-speaking countries while others offer courses in English.

OSU Departmental Programs

Departmental programs focus on a specific academic discipline and restrict participation to students in the associated department or college.

IE3 Global Study Programs

OSU is home to IE3 Global study programs which offer students immersive and affordable study experiences. Enroll at a partner institution abroad and take classes side by side with local students or participate in an intensive program focused on language and culture.   With options in the summer and during the academic year, programs are open OSU students as well as students from partner campuses throughout Oregon.

International Internships with IE3 Global

If you have relevant experience in your field and are seeking to contribute your skills and knowledge to an international host organization, consider an international internship through OSU's IE3 Global program. IE3 Global provides high-quality, internships to the students of OSU, as well as our partner campuses throughout the Northwest and beyond.  Internships are best suited for students interested in an independent experience abroad that requires greater self-motivation and is fully immersed among host nationals.

Research Abroad

Research-focused study abroad options are available through our partner organizations listed below and research-focused internship options are available through  IE3 Global Internships .

What an OSU GO Supported Program Means for You

OSU fully supports participation in education abroad programs that have been reviewed by the OSU GO Advisory Group to ensure a high quality experience and the safety of all participants. This extensive review process guarantees that our students will earn OSU resident credit by participating on these programs. Additionally, fully supported education abroad programs are the only programs that students can finance by accessing their OSU financial aid. While some programs may originate from OSU and others are offered by distinct program providers, only  programs appearing on the OSU GO website  qualify as fully supported by OSU.

COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE

Before using Concur Travel and Expense for the first time, you must complete your profile by clicking the “Profile” link at the top left of the page, and then select Profile Settings.  Please see the video library for help filling out your profile.  Through your concur profile you can verify your email address, add your personal travel preferences, as well as update emergency contact information.  An updated profile is critical and will really enhance your travel & expense experience.

TRAINING AND SUPPORT

There are various training materials available to help get up to speed on the new Concur Travel & Expense software.  Please visit the training library to view training videos, process documents, or trip sheets.

CONCUR PRE-TRIP REQUESTS

OSU employees and students need to submit pre-trip requests for their OSU sponsored domestic and international travel through Concur, except for in-state travel.  The International Travel Registry (housed in Global Opportunities) should still be used for ALL international travel.  This will ensure OSU students and employees are properly supported in case of emergency while traveling abroad.  Work is currently underway aimed at reducing the complexity around pre-trip registration processes for International Travel, but the International Travel Registry remains a critical component.

LODGING AND PER DIEM

Generally, lodging will be reimbursed only up to the per diem amount (refer to the  Business Affairs travel page  for current per diem rates).  Students, please discuss further with your PI/Advisor before traveling.  In some situations, they may have certain restrictions that must be followed.

For almost all in-State ground travel all faculty, staff, and students should utilize  motorpool .

For those very rare instances a student or faculty member is given permission to utilize their own vehicle, rather than  motorpool , please use this  Mileage Log

Prior to traveling by personal car, make sure you (a) ask for permission from your PI or Program Director, (b) write a statement explaining why personal transportation is more cost effective; and (c) provide back up documentation supporting this statement.

  • In-State Mileage
  • Driver Authorization Form

* Filling the driver authorization form is mandatory, to be completed prior to reserving your ride and renewed annually.  The form should be scanned and emailed to Sam Christopher ( [email protected] ), as the authorizing signer.

  • Motor Pool Reservation System

*Students are required to use Motor Vehicles for ground travel around Oregon to do work. Using a personal vehicle should be used only a last resort and requires pre-approval from advisor.

PERSONAL REIMBURSEMENTS

Personal Reimbursements will be handled on Concur.  If you haven't already done so, complete your profile information within Concur, scan a copy of your receipts, making sure to include each items business purpose, and have your PI's index handy before starting your request.

In these cases, International Travel advances the mission, values and global engagement profile of the university, and provides enriching experiences for the Traveler. International Travel also entails certain risks for Travelers and the university. This University Policy describes a consistent set of standards and expectations associated with University-Related International Travel which must be followed by all units and Travelers.

2.2. This University Policy seeks to enable consistent planning and operation, quick and consistent institutional response and support in the event of a crisis, and a reduction of risks to Travelers and the institution.

3. Scope & Audience

3.1. This University Policy applies to all persons who engage in University-Related International Travel.

4.3. International travel : Travel outside of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. U.S. Territories are considered International Travel for the purposes of this University Policy to allow access to additional health, safety, and travel insurance coverage, and because the risk rating of U.S. Territories may be different than that of the rest of the country.

All Travelers are required to register their travel with the university in advance of their departure via the process outlined on the International Travel website. (See Section 6.1.) Travelers who are not a university employee or student will need a university employee to register on their behalf.

a. Failure to register travel may result in delays or forfeiture of reimbursement of travel expenses, or delays in the ability of the university to provide support in the event of an emergency.

5.1.2. Orientation . Travelers may be required to participate in pre-departure orientations, read and abide by applicable guidelines, or complete other trip-related requirements. These requirements are generally communicated to the Traveler by the Office of Global Opportunities (OSU GO).

5.1.3. Liability Waivers/Assumption of Risk . Travelers who are not university employees or university-recognized volunteers are required to read and sign the Acknowledgement of Risk and Waiver of Liability Form. (See Section 6.2.)

5.1.4. Evacuation . The university reserves the right to issue an instruction that all Travelers evacuate a given location when the university deems, in its sole judgment, that conditions have changed to the extent that continued presence in that location endangers the health, safety, or security of Travelers.

a. The Senior International Officer or their designee, in consultation with the ITRC, will evaluate the conditions at a given travel location and make a recommendation to the Provost for a decision regarding trip interruption or evacuation.

b. If a Traveler does not heed a university instruction to evacuate, that individual remains at their own risk, may forfeit insurance coverage, and may face consequences including but not limited to disciplinary action or financial consequences.

5.1.5. Export Controls . 5.1.6. Data Security . International travel introduces additional risks to the security of university data. Travelers must take appropriate steps to protect university data during their time spent outside the United States. ii. Submit a High-Risk Travel Request Form (see Section 6.1). This document includes a justification of travel, acknowledgement of risk, and other information; and

iii. Submit a letter of support. For students, the letter should come from a supervisor or faculty involved with the travel. For employees, the letter should come from their department head or direct supervisor. For others, the letter should come from the head of the unit connected to the trip.

5.2.2. High-Risk Travel Approval Process .

b. The ITRC will review and assess High-Risk Travel Request Forms and make a recommendation to the Senior Administrator or their designee for final determination. Approval may be conditional upon a Traveler taking further steps to mitigate risk including, for example, additional health, safety and security precautions, modification of proposed itinerary, further training, special waivers, or additional insurance coverage.

Oregon State University engages in education and research collaborations with institutions and colleagues around the world. Support is available for establishing new agreements.

Letter of Collaboration

A Letter of Collaboration (LOC) is a non-binding, general agreement initiating relations with a partner institution. An LOC expresses mutual interest in engaging in cooperative academic or research efforts. This is often the first step toward developing a more concrete program.  Any language deviating from OSU's standard LOC form, including LOCs originating with the partner, must be reviewed by Contract Services.

  • View the  OSU Standard LOC (PDF)  to ensure it will meet your needs.
  • If you would like to proceed with an LOC, download the International Agreement Intake Form and the OSU Standard LOC  and fill in required information.
  • Email documents to the  Global Affairs Associate , who may reach out to you for further information and can facilitate the signature process and archiving of the signed agreement.

If your international partner is a member of the Erasmus+ network, it may be possible to access financial support for international partnership activity using the Erasmus+ mobility agreement, learning agreement, or inter-institutional agreement, depending on the type of activity planned. You can learn more about Erasmus+ and see the templates on their website . Please note that if your activity involves OSU student mobility you will need to work with OSU Global Opportunities (see below).

Education Abroad Program

Programs which involve international mobility for OSU students are overseen by the Office of Global Opportunities (OSU GO). Please contact OSU GO  for more information about any of the following options:

  • Student Exchange Programs involve a two-way exchange of students, with a commitment of resources on the part of both OSU and the collaborating institution. A Student Exchange Agreement guides the administration of a student exchange program with an international partner university.
  • Study Abroad Programs send OSU students abroad for academic coursework. These programs may be offered by the international institution or through a third-party provider.
  • Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs are international academic opportunities developed and implemented by OSU faculty.
  • International Internships & Research  are professional or academic experiences related to a student's area of study in an international location. These can be initiated by a faculty member, be provided through a third party, offered by a partner institution, etc.

MOUs and Other International Agreements

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a binding agreement with specific expectations clearly outlined for both parties. This type of agreement is appropriate when you have moved past the ideas and exploration stage with an international partner and are now setting a detailed and binding framework for your cooperative activity.

The Vice Provost of Academic Affairs is the signature authority for OSU on international agreements. Other OSU leadership or employee signatures are optional.

For support with these processes or for any questions, please email the Global Affairs Associate   or call (541) 737-6209.

You can view our FYI Friday presentation about International Agreements for more information.

Each agency provides a searchable travel advisory page to understand the risks of a particular destination.

  • U.S. Department of State
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

In certain circumstances, the University may also apply the High-Risk designation to a location that poses a specific health or safety concern.  All high-risk destinations are automatically loaded into Concur and visible to travelers when creating a pre-trip request.

Concur High Risk Information

All high risk destinations will trigger an alert after you have saved the pre-trip request header.  Indicating that the location is high risk and requires senior administrator approval.

What about Virtual START?

Virtual START will be fully asynchronous for students.  They will be able to complete all required content and modules in their own time and at their own pace through the 5 days of their chosen START session.  There will be plenty of opportunities to engage in synchronous events like socials, 1:1 connections with a START Leader, and advising, which student can plan out at their own scheduled times.  There is only one Canvas page for each START session with each college having assignments inside of the Canvas page.

Our virtual START is designed for self-motivated students who already have support and connections at OSU or in Corvallis.  It is a streamlined version of START and we find that students who are older than traditional age, serving their communities in fire service or military, and those with the ability to create community in other ways are the most successful in this START model.  This is a completely asynchronous START and while it contains lots of opportunities for engagement, is up to the student to choose to participate in these.

You can access the canvas pages here, or request access by sending us an email.

FAQs for START 2024

As you’re likely aware, START Orientation primarily relies on fees collected from participating families, with only a small portion, around 10% of our total budget, coming from E&G funds annually. Despite our ongoing efforts to enhance our START program, pursue cost savings throughout, and align with student wage recommendations from ASOSU, we have encountered challenges in maintaining this funding approach without a substantial revision.  We benchmarked our fees against U of O , Portland State, Washington State , U of W, and Colorado State to ensure we were moving forward with a reasonable ask of students.  While we are steadfastly committed to accessibility and affordability, we have found it necessary to introduce a very modest fee of $10 per student starting in 2024.

In-Person START

Students - FY and TR - $10 per student

  • This cost subsidizes the cost of their catering and meals, building reservation costs, printed materials, and staff wages
  • This also helps to build buy-in and right-size the START budget

FY Parents & Families – (guests over age 10) - $80 per person

  • This covers the cost of their catering and meals, defrays our building reservation costs, and pays for their printed materials (including the parent and family calendar)
  • Subsidizes student costs of printing, meals, and building reservations
  • Automatically signs this person up for a year of newsletters and communications from our office.

TR Parents & Families – (guests over age 10) - $65 per person

  • Automatically signs this person up for a year of newsletters and communications from our office
  • Costs are less than FY families due to one day event v. two for FY families

Siblings under age 10 - Free of charge to encourage families to attend if they have younger children at home

Housing - (students and families) - $60 per student; $75 per family member

  • Cost is all-inclusive of their room, linens, dinner, social activities in the evening, and breakfast the next morning.
  • Students will be placed together in double rooms in a traditional "bathroom down the hall" residence hall.
  • Families will be placed together in suites with the "shared bathroom in a suite", with only one family per suite where possible.

Virtual START

Students- $0

  • There is no charge for virtual START to students.  Many hours will go into the content set-up and staffing of panels and meetings for students, but we are committed to maintaining at least one pathway through START that is at no additional cost to students.

Virtual Parents & Families - $0

  • There is no charge for virtual and families.
  • They will be invited to a series of panels and events that they can choose to attend virtually throughout the summer.

Off-site START

Students - $150

  • This covers the cost of their catering and meals, defrays our building reservation costs, and pays for their printed materials
  • Subsidizes the costs of staff and advisors traveling to meet with students, as well as shipping materials

Parents & Families – (adults) - $75 per person

  • This covers the cost of their catering and meals, defrays our building reservation costs, and pays for their printed materials (including the parent and family calendar and handbook)
  • Minimally subsidizes student costs of printing, meals, and building reservations
  • No housing is offered for off-site START.
  • If a student and their two guests attends Hawai'i START, the charge of $300 is lower than the average price of a roundtrip flight from Honolulu to Portland ($400).

Yes!  All students will be encouraged to add on a residence hall stay for the night between their START day and advising day! Parents and families will be able to choose to stay as well.  We've teamed up with UHDS to offer a low-cost option for families that is all-inclusive of their room, linens, dinner, social activities in the evening, and breakfast the next morning.

  • Students will be placed together in double rooms in a traditional "bathroom down the hall" residence hall. The cost is $60 per student.
  • Families will be placed together in suites with the "shared bathroom in a suite", with only one family per suite where possible. The cost is $75 per person.

Additionally, we'll offer limited overnight residence hall stay options for both students and families for the night before their START date.  We have to limit the number of students and families who choose this option, so we'll work to make this available to those coming from furthest away.

Small groups with a START Leader are a way for us to engage all three of our goals of START: academic, social, and culture of OSU orientations.  The group is structured as 45 minutes to build off of the previous session discussing campus resources, share START Leader stories of their favorite spots and successes, and introduce new students to the culture of OSU.  The agenda aims to introduce and normalize nervousness, prioritize important resources for new students, and support connection and belonging among incoming students.

The goals of START are:

  • We empower students to succeed in their academic and social environments at Oregon State.
  • We prepare families to support their students in their first year at Oregon State.
  • We work to foster connections with new students to initiate their social and institutional belonging at Oregon State.
  • We introduce the culture of Oregon State University to incoming students.

We think of START as a three-legged stool, balancing equally on academic orientation, social orientation, and the culture of OSU orientation .  Supporting parents and families through their own transition helps us achieve all three of these goals holistically.

No.  In February 2020, the Academic Advising Council approved a policy that governs recruitment for majors and course enrollment during START .  The full scope and procedures can be read via clicking the link above, and generally colleges should reference the document for other options for sharing their new courses, as well as sharing information about their available majors and programs.

Check back as we update the FAQs!

Yes!  Both of these sessions have the same content as any other START session, but they are supported by faculty and staff across the university and aim to help students find belonging during their orientation process.

  • We are pleased to present Bilingüe again this summer, our START session where content is presented in both English and Spanish for families.  This will be held on Sunday July 9 in conjunction with First-Year Session #3.
  • Additionally, we are partnering with the Dr. Lawrence Griggs Office of Black & Indigenous Student Success to host a START session aimed and supporting our black and indigenous new students.  This will be held on Saturday July 30, in conjunction with our First-Year Session #9.

Students interested in meeting with financial aid

New for 2023, students who are classified as "High Need" by Financial Aid will see a question on their START sign-up at the very bottom that says "We have a small pool of funding to partially offset the cost of START fees for high-financial need families. This funding is limited and we unfortunately will not be able to meet the needs of all families looking for START fee financial assistance. Would you like to be considered for a START partial fee waiver?"  These funds are provided by the Parent & Family Foundation fund operated by the Office of the Dean of Students.

The first students in each session who check this box will be notified that up to $100 will be waived from their cost of START attendance.  The number of waivers is different for each session and is listed below.

  • FY1 and FY2 - 10 waivers are available per session
  • Bilingüe (FY3) and Black & Indigenous START (FY9) - 16 waivers are available per session
  • All other in-person START sessions - 13 waivers are available per session

*Additionally, OSO has a long-standing practice of not charging CAMP students and families for START attendance and housing and this practice will continue, in addition to this waiver process.

Students will be encouraged to stay for their advising appointment in person, if possible.  If they are not able to stay, remote options are available.  OSO will host a "help desk" during this day to support students finding their way around campus.

You can find more details in the Guide for Colleges document , created by the Advising at START workgroup.

Firstly, because we have a LOT of students!

In summer 2022, OSU returned to hosting START in person as covid-related restrictions were still in place.  We hosted 20 total sessions (16 FY and 4 TR) in order to host smaller sessions of approximately 225 students per session all summer, as well as due to LaSells Auditorium not being available.  Finally, admissions instituted a new policy of closing admissions, but since this was the first year, this resulted in a large influx of students after the May 1 deadline and resulted in adding sessions later in the summer.

In summer 2023, while LaSells is still closed to us, we are capping sessions at 325 students and using LINC 100 to host the largest sessions we're able to.  We will host 12 First-year and 3 Transfer sessions this summer.

For context, the pre-pandemic model in 2019 capped sessions at 350-365 and they hosted 10 first-year and 4 transfer sessions.

If a student does not attend START but does attend their advising appointment in person, we will:

  • In general unless dire circumstances are present, redirect the student to register for a new START session.  It is important for every student to get the pre-advising content before they register for classes.
  • Walk the student to the OSO help table to help them get signed up for a new START session, including the next virtual session.

Notes for this process to work are:

  • This will only impact colleges that are doing pre-scheduling before START.
  • All colleges agree to take attendance at their college session to ensure that their records match the morning's START attendance records in Slate.  This will ensure that if they attended another college's session, they'll still be able to be listed at attended.
  • If colleges notice any discrepancies, they'll contact OSO as soon as possible.

If a student does not attend their in person advising appointment but does attend in person START, we will:

  • Colleges will outreach to student and redirect them to sign up for a slot in virtual advising days.
  • Connect in other advisors who may be looking for the student, including if they are Honors, EOP, TRiO, Athletes, etc.

Hawai'i START team 2023

Advisors and staff smile at the camera after Hawaii START in 2023

The following advisors have stepped up and agreed to travel with OSO to advise students in person in Hawai'i.

  • Sarah Kyllo from College of Engineering
  • Julia Rosenzweig from College of Engineering
  • Ashlei Edgemon from College of Liberal Arts
  • Kris Gage from College of Science
  • Chris Wheeler from College of Business
  • Raina Martinez from Educational Opportunities Program

Additionally, the following folks are traveling to help host and present to students and their families.

  • Ben Medeiros from University Housing and Dining Services
  • Laura Mondragon from Office of Financial Aid
  • Rick DeBellis from Office of Admissions will be advising DPP students
  • Annie Tarter from Office of Student Orientation
  • Melissa Morgan from Office of Student Orientation
  • Heather Wofford from Office of Admissions
  • Christy Jones - Griggs Center Coordinator for Indigenous students

Finally, this group is guided and supported by the following staff and students.

  • Kameron Kadooka - faculty advisor of Hui O Hawai'i club
  • Irie Cheng - President of Hui O Hawai'i club
  • Rachel Polisher from Office of Student Orientation

For 2023, students admitted to OSU for summer 2023 should have received a direct email from Slate/Beaver Basecamp inviting them to attend one of the summer START sessions, hopefully earlier in the summer.  While they need not attend START or meet with an advisor to register for summer classes, they will need to attend START to meet with an advisor for fall term.  Office of Student Orientation highly encourages summer admit students to meet with an advisor as soon as possible, as well as to attend START earlier in the summer. Advisors with access can view their population in this Slate query.

YES!  New for 2023, students can choose to BOTH wait list a preferred session and sign up for a back-up session.  When signing up for START, students can choose to wait list a session that they'd prefer and Slate will automatically add them to that session and remove them from their back-up session.  There are separate email communications sent when students and guests are added to the wait list, as well as when they're moved from the wait list to registered status.  You can review this guide to see this from the student perspective.

There are three ways that we assess START formally.

  • At the end of the START day, we have a quick snapshot survey that we ask students to complete.
  • 10 day after START we ask students to complete a longer program assessment .
  • During the term after first enrollment, Erin Bird's office puts out a transition survey to all new students, which includes some START questions.

We also ask families and guests to complete an assessment of their time with us, in a similar format to how we assess the student experience.

  • Family quick snapshot survey
  • Family longer program assessment

Finally, Hawai'i START has just one assessment, which has some questions tailored for that experience.

  • Student Hawaii assessment
  • Family Hawaii assessment

DPP students can visit the table at the resource fair from 8-9:15am, attend the informational session from 4-4:30pm in MU 104, or visit the drop in session during advising day from 9am-4pm in Austin Hall.  Additionally, LBCC staff have put together a list of resources which you can acces at this link.

Oregon State Board of Trustees approves tuition rates, accepts 10-year business forecast

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State University Board of Trustees on Friday approved tuition rates and student fees for the 2024-25 school year and accepted an updated 10-year business forecast.

The undergraduate tuition rates for the 2024-25 academic year include an overall increase of 4.65% for continuing students.

At the same time, Oregon State will increase student financial aid funded by the university by $9.5 million to more than $125 million, a level that is almost three times what it was five years ago.

“In the face of rising costs, we are responding to sustain the high-quality services and support that we provide at Oregon State while mitigating the impact on tuition as much as possible,” said OSU President Jayathi Murthy. “We understand the impact that inflation is having on students and families, and in response we are again significantly increasing financial aid, especially for families with the greatest need.”

Other tuition increases include:

  • 4.65% for continuing and new students at Ecampus, Oregon State’s online education unit.
  • 2% for resident graduate students.
  • 5.15% for non-resident graduate students.
  • 2% for continuing and new Ecampus graduate students.
  • 3% to 7% for professional graduate programs.

The increases are driven by inflation related to labor, and goods and services; costs associated with increasing enrollment, such as additional instructional and support staff; and investments in expanded programs and services associated with the university’s strategic plan.

Student fees will also increase, including for:

  • Counseling and psychological services in Corvallis (11% increase).
  • Financing capital projects for non-instructional buildings, primarily student centers, student health facilities and student recreational facilities ($10 per quarter increase in Corvallis and $4 per quarter increase in Bend).
  • Student health services (4.7% increase in Corvallis and 4.6% in Bend).

The board also approved a short-term debt resolution; adopted a shared governance philosophy; approved amendments to the bylaws and three of its policies in compliance with Senate Bill 273, passed by the Oregon legislature in 2023; and heard a report on the 2024 state legislative session and upcoming 2025 legislative matters.

An executive session was held pursuant to Oregon Revised Statues 192.660(2)(d) to conduct deliberations with persons designated by the governing to carry on labor negotiations. No decisions were made in the executive session.

Full materials about the board meeting and its committee meetings, held Thursday, can be found on the  board’s web site .

  • Solar Eclipse 2024

See the 2024 Solar Eclipse’s Path of Totality

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Here's what to know about the path of the eclipse and where you can see it.

Read More : How Animals and Nature React to an Eclipse

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

Tuition hikes coming this fall for students headed to Oregon’s largest universities

oregon state university travel partners

Schools looking to keep up with inflation and other rising costs are looking toward student tuition to help fill budget gaps.

It’s tuition-setting season for Oregon’s colleges and universities and the cost of getting a higher education in the state is going up.

Oregon’s largest public postsecondary schools, including Oregon State University, Portland State University and the University of Oregon are all raising tuition for the 2024-2025 school year.

An orange banner affixed to a light pole reads "Oregon State University," while a campus building is visible in the background.

The campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., is pictured in this undated file photo.

Bryan M. Vance / OPB

The Board of Trustees for OSU voted Friday to raise tuition costs for resident undergraduate students at its Corvallis campus by 4.91%. Undergrads at the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend will see a similar increase of 4.7%. These hikes equal out to a $11 to $12 increase per credit hour.

Under OSU’s cohort model, costs vary depending on when a student enrolled. Tuition levels for the 2024-25 school year will range from $11,325 for a resident student who’s been enrolled since before July 2020 to $12,045 for someone entering the university for the first time this fall.

Trustees at Portland State also met Friday and approved a tuition increase of 4.8% for resident undergraduate students. UO’s trustees voted on a 3% rise in tuition for new undergraduates in March.

Both OSU and Portland State’s hikes come in just under a 5% tuition increase ceiling. Approving a steeper increase would trigger a review and require the approval of the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

All three schools raised tuition rates last year.

In Friday’s meeting, OSU senior leaders said the school needed to increase tuition to keep up with inflation, the rising costs of labor and expected expenses from the university’s new strategic plan.

“It pains us greatly to have to raise tuition,” said board member Román Hernández at the meeting. “But in order to accomplish the mission of the institution, that’s what we have to do sometimes.”

OSU’s graduate students will also pay more in tuition costs next school year, anywhere from a 2-7% increase depending on which graduate program they are in. Tuition rates are rising by 4.65% for students studying online as part of OSU’s Ecampus.

An earlier tuition setting proposal from OSU’s budget committee called for a 7.05% increase in tuition next year, which is above the board’s preferred range of a 2-5% annual increase. Instead, OSU President Jayathi Murthy recommended a lower rate to maintain affordability for students and to help increase retention and graduation rates at the school. But OSU tuition and fee setting documents note that a lower rate now could translate to higher tuition increases in the coming years. The university’s new 10-year business forecast operates on the assumption of a 7% increase in tuition for the 2025-26 school year and increases of 3.5% thereafter.

Mike Green, OSU’s chief financial officer, said the school plans to increase institutional aid for its students to over $100 million to help make up for increased student costs.

That fact did little to relieve OSU’s Board of Trustees’ sole student member, Kassy Bonanno. She said students are also feeling the impacts of inflation, with many struggling to meet their basic needs like food, housing and transportation. Bonanno was also concerned about student participation in the school’s tuition-setting process.

“We need more creative ways of paying for things beyond tuition,” said Bonanno at the Friday meeting. “We did not have robust student participation in the tuition setting process and that needs to change.”
