Itinerary - 21 Days

Day 1 cape town.

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included.

Day 2 Cape Town

Begin the day with an exploration of vibrant Cape Town, wandering through the multicultural Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Then enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, named by National Geographic Travel as one of the world’s 10 most magnificent gardens. Later, stop by Boulders Beach to see the resident population of African penguins, and continue to the Cape Point lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope, the southwesternmost point in Africa.

Day 3 Cape Town

Enjoy a day of leisure in Cape Town, choosing from a variety of optional activities. Hop on a cable car to the summit, taking in extraordinary views of the city and the Atlantic seaboard. Or explore the Cape Winelands, visiting the historical city of Stellenbosch, touring wine estates with expert guides, and indulging in a variety of tastings and pairings.

Day 4 Cape Town/Johannesburg

Fly to Johannesburg, then take a guided tour of Soweto township. Soweto was an important center of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement and home to its leader, Nelson Mandela. Visit the Mandela House Museum and learn about this painful chapter in the country’s history. In the evening, enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbecue) with your fellow travellers.

Day 5 Johannesburg/Greater Kruger Area

Set out towards Kruger National Park via the magnificent Panorama Route, one of the world’s most picturesque drives. Make stops at the dramatic Blyde River Canyon and Bourke's Luck Potholes, and take in panoramic views of the forest-covered valley from the God's Window viewpoint. Continue to our lodge near Kruger National park, savour a delicious South African Dinner in this picturesque location.

Day 6 Kruger National Park

Rise early and climb aboard an open jeep for a full-day safari in Kruger National Park—home to an extraordinary array of large mammals. Spot elephants, lions, giraffes, and perhaps elusive leopards as we explore this breathtaking wilderness of savanna and scrubland. Return to our lodge in the evening, where you can take some time to relax and enjoy the nocturnal sounds of the bush.

Day 7 Greater Kruger Area/Karongwe Private Game Reserve

Travel to the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, a pristine wildlife sanctuary located in the Greater Kruger area. Meet with a researcher from the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Metapopulation Project—a program funded in part by National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative—and learn about efforts to protect the region’s cheetahs and other carnivores. The researcher then joins us for a wildlife-viewing excursion through the reserve.

Day 8 Karongwe Private Game Reserve

Spend the day exploring Karongwe on morning and afternoon safaris with our local guides. Search for Africa's famed "big five" as we drive through the shrublands of the bushveld. Back at camp, relax on deck or take a walk around the grounds.

Day 9 Karongwe Private Game Reserve/Johannesburg

Embark on one last safari this morning, keeping a lookout for Karongwe’s iconic inhabitants. Then head back to the city, where you’ll enjoy dinner in our family run lodge.

Day 10 Johannesburg/Victoria Falls

Catch a flight to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, named after one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth. Visit a nearby village and go grocery shopping in the bustling market. Then sit down with a local family for dinner, helping your hosts prepare a traditional Zimbabwean meal using the ingredients you picked out, and hear stories about local life and culture.

Day 11 Victoria Falls

Set out for a tour of magnificent Victoria Falls. Scottish explorer David Livingstone named them after Britain’s Queen Victoria, while their older, indigenous name is Mosi-oa-Tunya—“the smoke that thunders.” Opt for a scenic sunset cruise on the Zambezi River; and much more.

Day 12 Victoria Falls

Continue your exploration of majestic Victoria Falls on a variety of optional excursions. Go whizzing over the Zambezi River on a zip line, glide down the river on a sunset cruise, or feel the spray of the falls on your face as you explore the surrounding paths.

Day 13 Victoria Falls/Hwange National Park

Explore Victoria Falls at leisure this morning, and opt to take a guided tour of this thundering natural wonder and UNESCO World Heritage site. Later, transfer to the headquarters of Painted Dog Conservation. Learn about this non-profit organization’s work to protect and rehabilitate injured painted dogs (also known as African wild dogs), and hear from a conservationist about the threats to these endangered animals. Afterward, venture out on safari in Hwange National Park, one of Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife reserves and an important elephant sanctuary.

Day 14 Hwange National Park

Set out on morning and late afternoon safaris through the sweeping grasslands of Hwange National Park and Dete Vlei. Track resident elephant and buffalo herds, as well as giraffes, lions, zebras, and the rare African wild dog. This evening, relax on the deck of your lodge or visit the underground hiding area which is perfect for photography enthusiasts, keeping an eye out for the wild creatures that visit the lodge’s watering hole.

Day 15 Hwange/Chobe NP

Depart Hwange and head north, crossing the border into Botswana and arriving in Kasane—the gateway to the stunning Chobe National Park. Settle into your lodge and embark on a boat safari on the Chobe River, the lifeline of the park. Look out for submerged hippos, basking crocodiles, bathing elephants, and an abundance of birdlife from the boat’s deck, and witness a spectacular fiery sunset over the river.

Day 16 Chobe NP

This morning, continue your exploration of Chobe National Park, home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations. On a safari along the banks of the Chobe River, keep an eye out for elephants, buffalo, lions, zebra, and rare semi-aquatic antelope, as well as an incredible variety of birds. In the afternoon, opt to take a photography river safari on a specialized photography boat.

Day 17 Kasane/Okavango Delta

Take in the views on a scenic flight into the heart of the Okavango Delta. Climb into a mokoro (dugout canoe) and glide along the waterways around our remote camp to catch a first glimpse of the area’s abundant wildlife. Settle into comfortable tents, explore the camp, or opt to go for a swim. After lunch, embark on a wildlife cruise, watching for hippos and elephants as well as aquatic birds drawn by the region’s unique fish and insects. Enjoy a sundowner deck back at the camp before dinner under the stars.

Day 18 Okavango Delta

Get an early start today, hopping into mokoros to maneuver through narrow channels of the delta. Arrive at Chief’s Island, part of the Moremi Game Reserve , and set out on a thrilling bush walk. Follow a guide into the wilderness, in search of giraffe, zebra, lion, kudu, elephant, and hippo as well as all manner of birdlife. Identify tracks and other signs of wildlife and learn about the medicinal uses of native plants and trees. Return to camp for brunch, then enjoy free time to relax or observe wildlife from the deck. After high tea, head out for another boating activity or wildlife drive. This evening, take time to stargaze and listen to the enchanting sounds of the delta after dark.

Day 19 Okavango Delta

Embark on both morning and late afternoon wildlife excursions by boat, on foot, or by jeep, depending on current conditions and water levels. In between, enjoy the amenities at the camp, go for a swim, or relax with a book on the deck. Remember to keep your eyes open and binoculars close to observe passing wildlife.

Day 20 Okavango Delta/Maun

After an early-morning wildlife excursion, fly to the frontier town of Maun. Meet with an expedition member on National Geographic’s Okavango Wilderness Project, a multi-year collaboration between international and local experts to survey the Okavango watershed’s biodiversity and ensure its future protection. Watch the National Geographic documentary “Into the Okavango,” and learn about delta conservation projects in the area. In the evening, experience a night of storytelling and traditional foods with celebrated local author Bonty Botumile. Born in Maun, Bonty’s work is dedicated to preserving Botswana’s literary heritage and providing youth with employment opportunities in the arts. Listen as she shares her in-depth knowledge of the region’s cultural history, and cap off the night with a delicious meal and colourful stories around a warm fire.

Day 21 Maun

Depart at any time.

Traveller Testimonials

Get an idea of what your adventure could be like from people who have enjoyed their travels with National Geographic Journeys.

I learnt so much about Costa Rica, its history, flora and fauna. I have some amazing memories and have made some firm friends from the tour. It was excellent and, as a result, I know I will be going back to Costa Rica in the future!

Jayenne C., Explore Costa Rica

It was a wonderful experience that I have already recommended to several friends. The accommodations were great and well located. Yoko was a well-organized, helpful and knowledgeable guide.

Patricia S., Iconic Japan

AMAZING! From being able to try such a variety of experiences, learning the culture and history to meeting NOW everlasting newer friendships from this vacation. This is by far one of the best, and most enriching vacations I have ever had—for both my husband and I.

Maria L., Explore Machu Picchu

Absolutely fabulous! This was the best vacation we have ever had in that we were part of a small group of people who all love the outdoors, learning and experiencing new places, foods, culture, and best of all, people! Our CEO was fantastic! He shared so much of his beautiful homeland with us through visits to hidden gems, meeting local people, sharing time and culture with the unique and lovely people of New Zealand. We hiked, we ate, we heard, we saw, we felt, and we laughed and hugged a lot! We left a piece of our hearts in New Zealand. What we took away from all this is a lifetime of fantastic memories.

Virginia D., New Zealand Journey

This trip totally exceeded my expectations. Our CEO, Moses, and driver, Edward, were both excellent and really made the adventure everything it was. They worked really well together and were really friendly, informative and enthusiastic. The wildlife itself was superb, better than I had hoped and because of the guys' enthusiasm I found myself interested in far more than just the bigger animals. The standard of accommodation and food was excellent and I really enjoyed all the activities included in the tour. The tour felt totally authentic, and it really felt like people were welcoming of us on the basis of the positive work done in the community.

Caroline D., Tanzania Safari Experience

This trip was truly an adventure worth taking. In one short week, I came face-to-face with 13 gorillas, sprinted through a forest in pursuit of chimpanzees, watched a mother hippo protectively shield her baby from our view, and listened to a pride of lions devour a buffalo carcass at sunset. Experiences like these provide lifelong memories, and as an added bonus, I made new lifelong friends as well. After planning this trip for over a year, the experience itself lived up to — and surpassed — my expectations in so many ways.

Kelley G., Rwanda & Uganda Gorilla Discovery

Great trip. I was especially happy with the National Geographic exclusives. The food we got at the Parwa Community Restaurant was one of the best we enjoyed in Peru. The visit to Parwue de la Papa was enlightening and enjoyable. The same can be said of the visits we did at Lake Titicaca — the Floating island, the Taquile Island visit and lunch hosted by the village on Luquina Peninsular. It is especially heartening and fulfilling to know that [the company] is actively contributing to the local community in helping these villages help themselves in a sustainable manner.

Wern L.C., Inca Explorer

This tour exceeded my expectations on pretty much all fronts. I was able to get pushed out of my comfort zone just enough by being in a place where the customs were different and I didn't speak the language, but at the same time I always felt safe. We were able to see the "real" Morocco in a way that other tours wouldn't have done.

Amanda R., Morocco: Sahara & Beyond

This trip was awesome. The cities, architecture, interiors, food and people were a photographer's dream. I've been to Spain before (Madrid and Barcelona), but Andalusia is truly special. The entire itinerary was great, and the exclusive experiences provided lots of insights into the destination. When I first read about learning to dance flamenco, I didn't think it would be a highlight, but it was so much fun and really made me appreciate the history, talent of the dancers and the show even more. I want to go back!

I love my job as a Journeys CEO for five reasons: 1. I get to meet new people I love meeting others and hearing their stories. It's so cool seeing their eyes light up while telling me what they're passionate about. 2. I get to talk about my favourite place Talking about your home , your family, and your friends — it's literally the best thing ever. Getting to share that sense of happiness and peace is the coolest thing.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because you get to take your experience to another level that even I myself couldn’t dream up. One of my favorite parts of leading trips in North America is when I take people to the Grand Canyon. I get to experience their first sighting of the amazing layers and shear natural beauty that exists in the Wild West of Arizona.

It’s such a diverse continent I come from. And taking travelers through it is mind and soul enriching. Whether it’s traversing through the oldest desert in the world, the Namib, walking through the jungle of the Okavango delta, the largest inland delta in the world, watching hundreds of elephants drinking in Hwange National Park, or putting the icing on the cake by showing our amazingly rich culture.

There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. Then I pulled out a piece of paper and started reading: "Our pockets were filled with odd scraps of paper on which were written the names of the sons and daughters and relatives in America to whom we had promised to write that we had seen mother or uncle or cousin in Florence

“Even if it doesn’t smell good, jasmine is still jasmine. Even if he isn’t elegant, a Hanoian is still a Hanoian.” My father used to recite this poem to me when I was a little boy. I will never forget what he told me about Hanoi because since I moved to this city, Hanoi simply became my second home. As a local who loves food, cultures, and meeting people, I see that many tourists are now stuck in the touristy area, which doesn't make them "really travel" to Hanoi, Vietnam. So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi."

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because I get to spend time with like-minded people that just love anything to do with nature. I get excited every time I see the joy in our travellers’ faces when they see their dream become a reality. Many times, people on our trips have been waiting their whole lives to come to Africa to see our beautiful land and creatures. For me it is a privilege to show them all that I can in the time I have with them. I want them to leave with a little piece of Africa in their hearts forever.

Getting to share that sense of happiness and peace is the coolest thing. 3. I get to see others excited about being at my favourite place There's nothing quite like that feeling you get when you see that your stories are making people smile. 4. I get to walk around my favorite place for hours When you're having a rough day, a nice walk in Petra talking about how much you love its beauty is a good way to lift your mood. 5. I make a huge impact in people's lives Every tour I do, every person I meet, is an opportunity to change their life by bringing happiness and friendship forever.

And then we all go behind the scenes and have a local expert explain the history and the detail that goes into the magnificent wonder of the world. I get excited each time we get to have a unique opportunity to speak to someone who studies the background and unique details that accompany our amazing National Geographic Journeys destinations.

Sharing all this, sitting around a campfire with a beautiful night sky above us, I love to bring some of the stories travelers read into life by simply sharing all this with them.

There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. Then I pulled out a piece of paper and started reading: "Our pockets were filled with odd scraps of paper on which were written the names of the sons and daughters and relatives in America to whom we had promised to write that we had seen mother or uncle or cousin in Florence, that all was well, and that they were full of courage. One woman came up to us with a shy 16-year-old daughter and told us in English that she had waited to speak to the first Americans in Florence. She turned to the daughter and took two almost wilted roses and handed them to us. We have been looking for Americans to give these to, and you are the first. We are happy now." This is taken from a National Geographic published in March 1945. The words were followed by a moment of deep emotion felt by the group. For a second, it felt like we connected with those who were fighting to free the country more than 70 years ago. Moments like these are the main reason why I love leading National Geographic Journeys tours.

So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi." I like to take people to secret corners, small alleys, beautiful places, local street food places where they can take photos with real life styles of Hanoian, taste amazing local foods, or simply do Taichi or exercise with local people in the early morning. I'm proud to be a part of this beautiful city and I love having a chance to show people the real Hanoi.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because I get to spend time with like-minded people that just love anything to do with nature. I get excited every time I see the joy in our travellers’ faces when they see their dream become a reality. For me it is a privilege to show them all that I can in the time I have with them. I want them to leave with a little piece of Africa in their hearts forever. Changing people's lives and showing them the importance and interconnectedness of nature brings me joy. A bit deep, maybe, but I do love what I do.

Drakensburg foothills

Rock art, baboons and hiking in South Africa's Drakensberg mountains

Ancient rock art, towering waterfalls, and wildlife from baboons to weaver birds are among the wonders that await hikers in the Drakensberg Mountains.

It’s 6am in the morning. I’m crammed into the back of a Toyota, rattling up a truly terrible unsealed road in blanket mist, about to begin one of the greatest walks of my life. The next few hours will also serve up mud, two chain ladders and, at times, a view that extends no further than the end of my arm. But in the Drakensberg mountains, special things lie in wait.

I’ve come on a hiking trip to the largest mountain range in South Africa, which can be found around four hours south of Johannesburg. It’s a grassy massif full of grand, muscular contours, almost 940sq miles of which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ancient rock art decorates its caves, baboons caper in its valleys and footpaths thread over its buttresses.

On the afternoon I arrive here from the city, it feels something like deliverance. The foothills are a soft green, their slopes sketched with bracken. A herd of hartebeest appears at the roadside. Sunlight washes down onto villages of thatched rondavels (traditional round huts) and roaming hens. I drive past a ‘chameleon crossing’ sign, then weaver bird nests dangling from an acacia tree. The peaks on the horizon are tall and table-topped.

When I reach the Cavern Resort & Spa, a hill sanctuary where red-winged starlings swoop past tree ferns and the world’s best-exercised spaniels snooze in reception, Mike Mlangeni talks me through the following day’s trail. Mike is a hiking guide, a proud Zulu, a Liverpool fan and an early riser. “We leave at 4am,” he tells me. “When we get there, we’ll have to take a four-wheel drive transfer to the start. Bad road,” he says, fixing eye contact. “But worth it.”

This is how we come to be juddering up a track before breakfast, watching the dawn fog become thicker. We’re about to begin the Amphitheatre hike, a 7.5-mile circuit that culminates on an outlandishly beautiful escarpment. Or so I’m told. The first hour, in near-zero visibility, is slow going, and it’s not until a semi-view opens up, with rags of cloud settled in the clefts of a mighty mountainscape, that I feel my blood pumping. Then we reach the chain ladders.

“They’re simple,” says Mike, as we stand under a set of iron rungs disappearing up the rock face. “Just don’t look down.” Minutes later, we’ve negotiated both nerve-wracking ladders — around 78ft and 50ft respectively, although there’s a longer alternative route for those disinclined to climb them — and reached a grassy plateau. A malachite sunbird whizzes past, a blast of colour in the lingering mist. It’s at this point, after some 90 minutes of walking, that the sun breaks through and the scenery hurtles dizzily into focus.

We’ve reached an altitude of over 2,438m. A river is chuckling away from us across the plateau and, as we keep walking, I see that it’s flowing directly off the cliffside. My pulse quickens. A sign bolted to a rock reads ‘Tugela Falls — The Tallest Waterfall In The World — 983 metres (3,225ft)’. Seconds later, the view from the drop-off opens up and hits me physically: a dreamlike universe of plunging water, basalt precipices and miles-away mountains.

Cave paintings

I walk south, dazed, rambling along the cliff edge and staring out, then turn and do the same heading north. There are butterflies at my feet and gorges in the distance. Somewhere far below, cloud-shadows are patching the valley floor. I can’t take it all in. “See,” says Mike smiling when I rejoin him. “Worth it.”

Two days later, I’m sitting under a sandstone overhang examining 1,000-year-old paintings of hunters and lions. I’ve driven further south in the range to reach the thunderously handsome area around Cathedral Peak Hotel, a resort here since 1939. I had thought, foolishly, that the Amphitheatre’s scenery wouldn’t be topped, but here the peaks are more clustered, more hewn, somehow even more thrilling in scale. Groves of flowering protea trees dot the hills and black cuckoos echo from slope to slope.

The human figures in the rock paintings, which are thought to have been created using antelope blood, are shown running with spears. “They were done by the San people,” says my guide Zweli Sithole, his sun hat floppy above his scarified cheeks. “They were here before us Zulus, but they’re long gone now.” Zweli is the perfect hiking companion, with a warm patience and a habit of singing his words. “One step at a time,” he chants softly as we make the steep ascent up to a natural arch known as Mushroom Rock. “One step at a time.”

He leads me on a 10.5-mile loop through the empty green hills. Before I set out, the route description had sounded routine, but the reality is anything but. Craggy pinnacles frame the sky while slopes and ridges ripple into the distance. On a far hillside, elands graze in the sunshine. The views seem colossal and in all directions at once: spin on your heel and every way’s a winner. Zweli points out a high mountain pass that leads into Lesotho, then crouches by a stream to show me a crunched pile of crab shell left by an otter. We finish with a swim in the natural pool beneath Doreen Falls.

We stop so often to just sit and stare that it takes us nearly seven hours to get ourselves back to the resort. My boots are dusty and my calves are sore, but I’m absolutely buzzing for the rest of the day. Drakensberg translates as ‘dragon mountains’, while the Zulu word for the range — uKhahlamba — means ‘barrier of spears’. Never, I’m left thinking, were such dramatic names more warranted.

Land Trips - National Geographic Land Trips are immersive explorations, often covering nature and wilderness points of interest such as national parks. They also dive into ancient cities and cultures, with trips exploring everything from monks in Burmese mountainside temples to the lives of nomadic Mongolian peoples. Most trips are around 11 days and physical level is between light and moderate, with some trips featuring moderately challenging hikes in various altitudes.

River Cruises - a relatively new addition, Nat Geo now offers around 7 river cruises in Europe covering the Danube, Rhine, and Douro. Private Expeditions - If you and your family, significant other, or a few close friends are looking for a more intimate travel experience than a group of strangers, Private Expeditions are a great way to travel. These trips are customizable, and can be crafted to perfectly suit your interests and dates.

Photography Trips - National Geographic has consistently featured award winning travel photography. They run regular contests for those inspired by the thousands of groundbreaking and historic photographs taken by journalists and travel photographers around the world. On National Geographic photography trips you can actually learn tricks of the trade from real-world photographers and improve your skills.

Train Trips - Travel was revolutionized with the implementation of the railroad, allowing people to travel in what was then a rapid pace from destination to destination. Today this ideal has been flipped on its head, and train travel is a leisurely paced excursion allowing time to relax and appreciate the slower meandering through beautiful countrysides. National Geographic train trips cover the classics, such as the Trans-Siberian railway and the Rocky Mountain railroad. Accommodations are comfortable, around a premium level, with options to upgrade.

Active Expeditions - For those who enjoy a bit more of an adrenaline pumping and active travel experience, National Geographic also has trips for you. These trips feature multiple active outings, such as kayaking, hiking, and caving. Expect to explore the outdoors covering unique natural phenomena and gaining insight into how and why the landscape has been shaped the way it has. These trips also feature cultural insights, just to a lesser extent.

Family Expeditions - National Geographic is the perfect company to travel with when you have curious and adventurous youngsters eager to see the world. They will learn about other cultures, people, food, nature and wildlife from experts with “cool jobs” that might even inspire lifelong interests and perhaps influence a career. These trips are specifically designed to be hands on, allowing everyone to get involved and learn about how things work.

Private Jet Trips - For a luxurious and more lengthy travel experience, nothing beats a Private Jet tour. A dedicated team will be with you, and you’ll experience all the best that National Geographic has to offer from local guides to premiere accommodation. These trips are in a very high budget range, but if it’s in your wheelhouse - it’s a superb way to travel and cover a lot of ground.

Journeys - Part of a partnership with G Adventures, these trips are adventurous and immersive small group excursions imbued with the spirit of National Geographic. The best of two top travel worlds!

Launched in 1999, National Geographic Expeditions now operates hundreds of trips each year, spanning all seven continents and more than 60 destinations.

Since its founding in 1888, the Society has developed incredible resources—from its network of experts, contacts, and Society-sponsored researchers all over the globe, to the top-tier editorial staff of National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler magazines, and the books, maps, and film and television divisions. National Geographic Expeditions taps these resources to create unique and authentic expeditions to fascinating parts of the world.

As part of the National Geographic Travel group, National Geographic Expeditions aims to fulfill the Society's mission to inspire people to care about the planet by providing meaningful opportunities to explore it. Proceeds from all travel programs support the Society’s efforts to increase global understanding through exploration, education and scientific research.

National Geographic Adventures

National Geographic Adventures are unique, active itineraries for intrepid travelers that feature spectacular places, cultural interaction, and physical challenge: the perfect mix for an unforgettable adventure. Trek through some of the world's most legendary mountain ranges and veer far off the beaten path, discovering wild landscapes by foot, kayak, horseback, or camel. Each adventure has a designated activity level—from Easy to Ultimate Challenge, and you'll have the option to take it easy or push your limits on a harder hike throughout most trips. Your group will never be larger than 16 travelers, and you'll explore in the company of top guides, enjoying adventures that are both physically active and culturally rewarding.

National Geographic Student Expeditions

National Geographic Student Expeditions offer active summer travel experiences for high school students in some of the world's most amazing places. With the guidance of dynamic trip leaders and top National Geographic experts, students explore their interests, build new skills, and experience new landscapes and cultures firsthand. Each type of program—expedition, field workshop, community service trip, and photo workshop—is designed to educate and inspire, combining adventure, discovery, and cultural immersion. Photo workshops are led by a National Geographic photographer and include instruction and daily photo shoots. Students in our community service programs live in a village and work with community members on a variety of service projects. On each expedition and field workshop, students get involved in a unique, hands-on project that allows them to delve deeper into a specific topic—such as photography, wildlife and conservation, filmmaking, or archaeology—and further engage with the places they visit.

What is a safari?

An African safari holiday is a thrilling and immersive adventure that allows you to explore the continent's diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and rich cultures. Here's a description of what you can expect on an African safari holiday - for those interested in authentic tailored safaris:

Destinations

Africa offers a variety of safari destinations, each with its unique attractions. We list all safari countries and each of the popular places within each country on our safari places page. The most popular safari countries include Kenya, South Africa and Botswana and the most searched-for places include Greater Kruger, the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls, Serengeti and the Maasai Mara.

One of the many highlights of a safari in Africa is to encounter some of Africa's iconic wildlife. Some places host the Big 5 (lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes and leopards) and other species such as giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest and wild dogs (painted wolves). Casual and serious bird watchers will enjoy ticking off an abundance of bird species. Other spectacular wildlife encounters include gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking .

Game drives

Game drives are the quintessential African bushveld safari experience. No matter where you are on this great continent, the expectation and thrill of heading out in the game drive vehicle in the early morning and late afternoon defines your safari day.

Your guide (and sometimes a tracker) will be reading the 'bush news' as you go - the many signs of the presence of wildlife - to ensure interesting and sometimes breathtaking wildlife encounters.

Lodges and camps

Accommodation options for your safari in Africa are many and varied- from luxury lodges to mobile tented camps. Lodges often provide spacious rooms with modern amenities, while tented camps offer a more immersive experience, allowing you to feel closer to nature. Some lodges and camps are situated in private reserves or private concessions within national parks, providing exclusive game-viewing experiences.

Cultural experiences

African safaris offer opportunities to engage with local cultures and communities. You can visit local villages, meet members of tribes, learn about their culture, and enjoy traditional dances and music. This cultural immersion adds another layer of richness to your safari experience.

Optional activities

Depending on your chosen destination, you could book additional activities such as hot air balloon rides, bush walks, canoe safaris, horseback riding, or even diving in coastal areas.

Spectacular landscapes

Africa offers diverse landscapes - including vast open savannahs, woodlands and dense forests, enormous freshwater lakes, arid deserts, and majestic mountain ranges. The breathtaking scenery is a constant companion throughout your journey.

Conservation and sustainability

The safari tourism industry is committed to conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices. By participating in a safari, you contribute to preserving wildlife habitats and supporting local communities (who are vital role players in wildlife conservation).

Unforgettable memories

An African safari holiday offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you with cherished memories. The beauty of wilderness areas, the thrill of wildlife encounters, and the warmth of African hospitality combine to create an adventure of a lifetime that will fuel your stories for years to come.

Remember that each safari experience can be tailored to your preferences, whether you prefer a more luxurious or adventurous approach. Start that discussion with our safari experts, who will help you create the safari of a lifetime. We specialise in authentic tailored safaris

Screen Rant

An adventure with national geographic: exploring tanzania with queens.

I traveled to Tanzania, Africa with National Geographic to see how the world's best natural history documentarians share their stories.

  • Screen Rant's Rob Keyes embarked on a journey to Tanzania, Africa with National Geographic to explore Arusha, Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Witnessed stunning wildlife in lush greenery, experienced local culture and amazing accommodations, while exploring diverse ecosystems.
  • Interacted with top natural history documentarians and expert filmmakers, immersed in breathtaking landscapes for groundbreaking TV shows.

Over five years ago while visiting Yellowstone National Park with National Geographic to go behind-the-scenes on Yellowstone Live the team shared stories of past worldly adventures related to other natural history programming and teased ideas for the future. The possibility of visiting Africa with the greatest natural history documentarians in the world seemed like the stuff of dreams.

One pandemic and a historical acquisition by Disney later (Nat Geo was majority-owned by 21st Century Fox at the time), and I'm offered the opportunity to do just that. In December I embarked on the journey of a lifetime to Tanzania , Malaria prophylaxis pills in hand due to my relationship with mosquitoes.

There were three legs to this journey and National Geographic organized enough time to spend two days in each region: Arusha , Serengeti , and the Ngorongoro Crater . These areas offered a glimpse into the real-world locations seen in Nat Geo TV shows A Real Bug's Life , Incredible Animal Journeys , and Queens .

The Arusha Coffee Lodge and visiting the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre

The trip began with a lengthy multi-leg journey from Canada to Tanzania where we landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport and took a drive to the Arusha Coffee Lodge . Arusha is known as the safari capital of Tanzania and this coffee plantation located at the base of Mount Meru is lush with greenery. It's very late when we arrived so it's straight to bed in my own Plantation House, bug net and bag of Nat Geo supplies included, and a snail the size of a baseball on the front step. In the morning, I awaken to beautiful, sunny weather highlighting the coffee plants but it's the sight of monkeys on top of some other other houses that capture my attention.

Vervet monkeys populate the area, and are known to sneak into plantation houses if guests are not careful in closing their doors. The same for daring to leave food on any of the outdoor tables, though I suspect they may get inside the main house eating area as well given how on my second morning at the Arusha Coffee Lodge, one curious Vervet monkey nearly followed me in. Take a peek at that one looking down at me in the gallery above! Less common are baboons who we're told by the staff can "wreak havoc" on the plantation on rare occasions.

While here for our first full day in Africa we screened an episode of A Real Bug's Life (narrated by Awkwafina) and interviewed Executive Producers Bill Markham and Martha Holmes over a remote video call and later in the day watched the "Savanna Queens" episode of Queens . Queens , of the three shows, is the big one and joining us on our journey for the week were Queens showrunner and writer Chloe Sarosh and Queens Director of Photography Sophie Darlington . They were able to screen multiple episodes for us during the trip, but more on them later!

A Real Bug's Life Poster Featuring Bugs Crawling on Leaves

A Real Bug's Life

A Real Bug's Life is a Nat Geo original series exploring some of the world's most unique bugs and how their extraordinary abilities help them survive. A Real Bug's Life is narrated by Awkwafina and premiered in January 2024.

In between screenings we also visited the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre , home to one of the world's largest collections of African art including one particularly standout piece that stands 19-feet tall, a family tree carved from ebony wood and the only item not for sale.

After returning to the lodge we enjoyed a guided tour of the plantation to see how the local coffee plants are cared for before participating in roasting, grinding, and tasting the freshest coffee imaginable. We even crossed paths with a large and mysterious hole that had just been burrowed through by an aardvark.

The next day began with an early morning ride to Arusha Airport where Nat Geo had arranged a charter flight to the Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti. It was time for some safari adventures!

Four Seasons Serengeti and Serengeti National Park

Since it's December when we explored Tanzania it was the short rains season and the Serengeti plains were lush with greenery and wildlife. Even on the drive from the airstrip to the lodge, it was impossible to drive minutes without seeing large groupings of wildlife. On that drive in alone we saw Tawny eagles, Topi, impalas, gazelles, dik-dik, warthogs, hippos, guineafowl, giraffes, buffalo, baboons, giraffes, elephants (in the distance), secretarybirds, openbill storks, elands, kongoni, northern white-crowned shrike, and more, alongside many, many large termite mounds.

And what made our time in Serengeti, and later in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so special was that all our many game drives around Serengeti we were accompanied by Queens showrunner and writer Chloe Sarosh and Director of Photography Sophie Darlington - the latter of whom spent years living in the region and shared the most amazing stories and knowledge, noting that Queens is something special:

"I've been filming for 35 years and [Queens] is the best thing I've ever worked on because it's not just the filming, it's so much more. It's the legacy."

Upon arrival at the Four Seasons Serengeti, where from my room I could see zebras and water buffalo and where guards escort guests to and from their room due to wildlife concerns (hyenas have found their way into the compound and a leopard once explored the hotel lobby I was told), we screened an episode of Incredible Animal Journeys and chatted with showrunner Sarah Gibbs about the series and how they worked with Disney to bring in Jeremy Renner as the narrator. Gibbs explains that "part of the ambition when making a series for Nat Geo or Disney is that they want you to get stuff you've never seen before."

Related: Watch this Exclusive Clip from Queens

During production of Incredible Animal Journeys , 127 days of footage were captured across three years and seven continents, including an astounding four "world first" moments such as a humpback whale birth. Another, more gripping example, is how they observed true altruistic behavior where a whale, out of kindness and empathy, fended off tiger sharks and stayed with another whale that was tangled in a net, lifting her to the surface and staying with her until she passed.

Incredible Animal Journeys Poster Feaaturing a Turtle Crawling on a Beach

Incredible Animal Journeys

Incredible Animal Journeys is a nature documentary narrated by Jeremy Renner. The Nat Geo series premiered on Hulu and Disney Plus in November 2023 and focuses on different animals' journeys as they prove that humans are far from the greatest explorers the world has ever seen. Incredible Animal Journeys document different species as they travel thousands of miles around the world to find food, mates, and safety.

Incredible Animal Journeys used as much local crew as possible to reduce the impact of the production and for the show to be possible they deployed the latest in tracking technology to observe the migrations of various animal species, even sharing footage and data with scientists. Note the years of work invested to sharing this story and this knowledge. This brings us to Queens , a project that took even longer and involved investing in mentoring and developing local and female filmmakers and storytellers. We screened another episode of Queens while in Serengeti, but over our two days there, we spent most of the hours on multiple game drives to ensure we could witness wildlife at sunrise, during the mid-day heat, and in the cooler evenings as it got dark.

Serengeti Safari Wildlife Photos

Below are select images from our many game drives in Serengeti, with photos provided by Dean Bell ( The Bachelorette , Bachelor in Paradise ) and myself.

Nat Geo Tanzania 2023 Giraffe 2

It's difficult to identify highlights because there were so many breathtaking moments along the journey, from finding a leopard avoiding the heat high up in a tree and seeing a massive bloat of hippos enjoying the water, to watching hyenas and lions play with their young, and of course, seeing an elephant matriarch lead her family of 20 right up to us and through our safari vehicles, even stopping to splash mud at us. Somehow, our two days in Serengeti topped our experience in Arusha. But it gets better.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro conservation area, the crater lodge, and a maasai boma.

For the final leg of the journey we returned to Seronera Airstrip for a charter flight to Lake Manyara Airstrip where we were welcomed by a group of vehicles and guides who took us on a lengthy and breathtaking journey into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and up to the top of the Ngorongoro Crater. This magical vista is the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera and its unfilled interior is sprawling with wildlife, home to over 25,000 animals including all of the "big five." The walls are steep, some reaching 8000 feet above sea level.

We stayed at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge on the rim of the crater, known to some as the "game lodge at the top of the world" and it has the most amazing view. Due to altitude, there are thankfully no mosquitoes and we could sleep without a bug net. The huts we stay in are large, classical, something from a fantasy bolstered by a view directly into the crater. There's evan a leather-bound collection of National Geographic magazines from the '80s in the room. The main house has a telescope to look directly into the crater. We can see flamingos and rhinos in the distance.

What are Africa’s Big Five?

Like in Serengeti, there are escorts (here, the local Maasai warriors) to and from our rooms which is required after dark as even up here in the clouds, water buffalo, elephants, and other large animals can graze past our huts and pick fruit off the nearby trees. In our final days in Tanzania, we meet many members of the Maasai tribe who are incredibly welcoming, even performing ceremonial dances for us. We visited a Maasai Boma, a local settlement, to see how the nomadic people can quickly build a residence, hunt, craft art, and start fire.

Wasting no time at all, we drive into the crater itself and get a first-hand look at some of what episode 2 ("African Queens") of National Geographic's Queens showcases so well.

Queens National Geographic Poster Featuring an Elephant, Lion, Bear, Fox, and Hyena Roaring

National Geographic's Queens (2024)

Queens is a Nat Geo documentary series narrated by Angela Bassett. The six-part nature doc follows the powerful sisterhoods that are formed in the animal kingdom among hyenas, elephants, ring-tailed lemurs, insects, orcas, and primates.

Since Ngorongro is a conservation area, the local Maasai are able to live around the crater rim but no longer within it on the crater floor. Serengeti by comparison, is a National Park so no one may live there. The only micro settlements we observed were research stations and on safari drives, no one could leave the designated paths (Nat Geo acquires permits to do so for filming).

Inside the crater there's more activity than I'd imagined. There's no sight line that doesn't feature a herd of something , and there's also a surprising amount of tourist activity. Safari vehicles, which the wildlife is accustomed to so long as guests follow the rules and stay inside, fill the paths and quickly gather up around interesting wildlife activity, whether a lion is finding shade beside a vehicle or on the hunt. We ourselves witnessed a rare serval sighting. We also saw a lioness successfully nab a young warthog in the distance, not too far from a beautiful black rhino. The zebras and wildebeests reacting and watching is what pointed us to this discovery.

Nat Geo Tanzania Ngorongoro Crater Safari Rob Keyes

In mere days spent in Tanzania we saw and experienced so much yet this is just scratching the surface of the natural history being documented in National Geographic's programming in these very same areas we toured. For the best look ever inside of the Ngorongoro Crater and in Serengeti check out Queens on National Geographic . Like Incredible Animal Journeys , the teams behind Queens showcase world-class cinematography, from a team of diverse and up-and-coming female filmmakers to tell stories that need to be seen to be believed, and they do so with style and power. We saw it and felt it here.

Note: While we observed and encountered an exceptional amount of wildlife, seemingly densely populated along every safari drive, I may have been the only person not to see a Cheetah on this journey and it was the running joke of the trip.

National Geographic organized this amazing trip to Tanzania with andBeyond . Incredible Animal Journeys and Queens can be watched on National Geographic, also streamed on Disney+ and Hulu. A Real Bug's Life is available on Disney+

Although tours like that work for many, it might make sense to use a safari agent who can arrange a similar trip. Doing it on your own will open up the opportunities to do stuff you’d like to experience, not just on a group tour. Southern Africa is very easy.

Personally, with just 17 days on the ground, it tries to do too much in too short a time and the itinerary is odd with too many wasted layovers. Group tours to S Africa are tough to do well.

' class=

Did you end up taking the National Geographic tour you mentioned above? I am looking at the same tour for 2019; but am not not familiar with the company. All our escorted tours have been with GLOBUS; but this one sure has a good price and inclusions.

I did not end up booking with National Geographic. We booked with Rhino Africa and leave mid May.

thank you for replying!

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/expeditions/destinations/africa/journeys/south-africa-and-namibia-tour/

If this is the tour.... its not too rushed: meaning unlike some other group tours your not travelling long distances every 2nd day..

BUT... and there is always a but

My opinion is theres is better bang for your buck elsewhere.

Thank you, Steve!

USA TODAY

National Geographic unveils best travel destinations for 2024: See full list

L ooking for exciting locations to explore this year? From diving with sharks on Australia's Coral Coast to rafting the white rapids of West Virginia, National Geographic has some unique ideas for you with its annual Best of the World 2024 list .

The list, released first to USA TODAY on Tuesday, includes top destinations in the world and lesser-known ones. They range from Paris and Niagara Falls to the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia and archeological sites on the Spanish island of Menorca.

Unlike previous years, National Geographic is emphasizing must-do experiences at each destination, instead of just listing out locations. And in another step away from previous editions , the publication has added rankings to help readers prioritize their bucket list.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"I'm so excited about this," said National Geographic Editor-in-Chief Nathan Lump at an exclusive preview in New York last week. "We've really extended it to be bigger than ever before. And we just think that is a really, really great way to serve our travelers who are looking for great ideas all the time."

Lump said the list was being released on Tuesday to coincide with National Vacation Day, the last Tuesday of every January.

Millions of vacation days go to waste every year, and Lump said that he hopes that this year's list will inspire readers to get out of their comfort zone and explore the world.

The list of the top 20 travel experiences is curated by National Geographic explorers, photographers, and editors. It's “a celebration” of “travel’s power to transform us and our connections with one another," the magazine said.

What are the best places to visit/experience in 2024?

National Geographic’s top travel experiences for the year are:

  • Horseback safari in Kenya.
  • Olympic Marathon in Paris.
  • Ski tour through UNESCO sites in Georgia.
  • Bear-watching at Katmai National Park, Alaska.
  • Live music in Kyoto, Japan.
  • Magdalena River Cruise in Colombia.
  • Road trip on Route 66 in New Mexico.
  • Explore ancient rock art in Algeria.
  • Dive with sharks on Australia's Coral Coast.
  • Volcano hiking in Panama.
  • Observe the total solar eclipse in Niagara Falls, New York.
  • Trek a glacier in Chile.
  • Step back in time at Menorca's archaeological sites.
  • Ride classic rails through the Scottish Highlands.
  • Indulge your taste buds in Isan, Thailand.
  • Wander the tea trail in Sri Lanka.
  • Gallery hop in Sao Paulo.
  • Raft the rapids in West Virginia.
  • Go antiquing in the Hudson Valley, New York.
  • Sleep at a floating lodge on Tofino Island, British Columbia.

How did National Geographic decide these places?

Putting together and consolidating a list of places is no easy feat but Amy Alipio, senior editor at National Geographic, told USA TODAY that it's her favorite project every year.

To put together the list, Alipio explained that her team taps into their global network of experts around the world. While work on the list is an ongoing process, National Geographic sends an official call out to its global network in April, said Alipio, who has been heading the list since its inception 12 years ago.

“We asked them, ‘What places do you love? What have you seen or done lately that you were absolutely blown away by or where do you want to go next?’” she said.

This year they also asked their experts to share what exactly they would do in those locations and that made the list even more personal, Alipio said.

“We're not just mentioning places," said Alipio. "We're mentioning where to go, but (also) what to do once you're there. I think we're really pinpointing ways people can connect and immerse themselves in a destination.”

Ranking the list

This is the first time that National Geographic has ranked it's "Best of the World" list to give readers an insight into what is trending and timely.

"For example, like the horseback safari (in Kenya), – just because people are really into slow travel," she said. "But also our No. 2 experience is really timely. It's about the Paris Olympics, which are this summer."

"I think it really was kind of like a mixture of superlative and timeliness," she adds.

The rankings have also been added as a response to audience feedback that they needed help prioritizing their travel plans.

"People do ask us like, 'What's the No. 1 thing on this list?'" Alipio said. "And now this year, we finally can tell people, 'Yeah, well, actually, we do have a number one that we really like.'"

What US sites made National Geographic's 'Best of the World 2024' list?

The following U.S. destinations made National Geographic's list this year: Katmai National Park in Alaska, Route 66 in New Mexico , Niagara Falls and the Hudson Valley in New York and West Virginia’s New River.

National Geographic recommends bear-watching at the Alaska national park along the Pacific Coast, which has the highest concentration of brown bears in the world. However, the publication suggests ditching the popular Brooks Camp visitor center and taking a trip through areas like Hallo Bay and Geographic Harbor. This activity is among the top five activities suggested by National Geographic.

National Geographic also recommends road-tripping on Route 66 through New Mexico, catching the total solar eclipse on April 8 at Terrapin Point in Niagara Falls State Park , antiquing in New York's Hudson Valley and rafting through the rapids in West Virginia's New River .

Where to see it: 2024's total solar eclipse will pass through over a dozen states

Just go to this Alaskan national park: You don't need to fly to Norway to view fjords.

Best places to visit in South and Central America

Colombia, Chile and Brazil in South America are among the best places to visit in 2024, while Panama is the best place to visit in Central America, according to National Geographic.

National Geographic recommends taking a cruise on Columbia's Magdalena River, soaking in the natural beauty and culture through the colonial towns and floating villages that surround the river.

Brazil's largest city, São Paulo, is an art-lovers paradise, and travelers can gallery-hop through the city's numerous galleries and art exhibitions, browse renowned street art, and check out the Museu de Arte de São Paulo , which holds more than 11,000 artworks from around the world.

In Chile, National Geographic suggests trekking through Patagonia’s Northern and Southern Ice Fields glaciers before they completely succumb to rising temperatures and climate change.

If you're into sustainable tourism, National Geographic recommends exploring Panama, which is currently promoting a government-supported community tourism network that allows travelers to select trips that "provide immersive experiences in less-visited areas of the country."

Among the highlights is the Ruta de la Caldera, a system of five hiking trails around the extinct El Valle de Antón volcano.

Best places to visit in Africa

The No. 1 destination on National Geographic's list is in Africa. Going on a horseback safari in the Borana Conservancy , a 32,000-acre preserve in northern Kenya, is the top thing to do this year, says the publication.

“To journey on horseback is to break down the walls – meant to protect, but also to separate – between oneself and the natural world,” Nichole Sobecki, a photographer and lifelong equestrian, said in a statement provided by National Geographic. “Your horse is your guide, and translator, responding to the low growl of the lion, the soft scent of a herd of elephants, the cool morning breeze descending from Mount Kenya’s glacial peaks."

The North African state of Algeria is also on National Geographic's list, ranking at No. 8. Algeria is home to Africa’s largest national park and holds one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ancient rock art, according to National Geographic. Tassili N'Ajjer National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage site , is a "geologic wonderland of sandstone pinnacles and arches surrounded by orange dunes," says the publication.

Best places to visit in Europe/UK

Among National Geographic's best places to visit in Europe and the United Kingdom in 2024 are Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Menorca in the Mediterranean Sea for a taste of history and the Scottish Highlands for a luxury train trip .

While Paris is a bucket list location, National Geographic recommends traveling there for the Summer Olympics and participating in the Olympic marathon course. Twenty thousand regular runners will be allowed to run the 26.2-mile loop that links Paris and Versailles, beginning at the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and passing through nine districts before finishing at Les Invalides on the banks of the Seine.

"Amateur athletes will be able to run the same route as the Olympic marathon, by night, enabling as many people as possible to follow in the footsteps of outstanding athletes," according to the race website. "This will be an extraordinary experience, on a unique and original route, celebrating the heritage and history of the Paris region and the whole of France."

Best places to visit in Asia

Among National Geographic's top recommendations for Asia in 2024 are: Kyoto in Japan , Isan in Thailand, the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia – which is located in both west Asia and Eastern Europe – and the newly opened Pekoe tea Trail in Sri Lanka.

"Carving a path through cloud-swathed villages and centuries-old tea estates, the new long-distance Pekoe Trail gives hikers a chance to explore Sri Lanka’s quiet central highlands," National Geographic writes .

Best places to visit in Australia

The Coral Coast , stretching almost 700 miles along the Indian Ocean north of Perth, is one of National Geographic's top recommended spots for 2024. Underwater activities include exploring the world’s largest fringing reef, Ningaloo Reef, "a stunning counterpart to the over-touristed Great Barrier Reef," and swimming with dolphins, whale sharks, and manta rays.

Between July and October, some 40,000 humpback whales migrate down the Australian coast, allowing travelers to observe them up close.

Interestingly, both National Geographic editors, Lump and Alipio, are looking forward to a deep-water adventure at Australia's Coral Coast.

Visitors view brown bears in Brooks Falls, Alaska within the Katmai National Park and Preserve on Aug. 11, 2023. Many come to see brown bears between July and September each year, as millions of sockeye salmon swim upstream to spawn. Hungry brown bears make sure the fish don't reach their destination and instead end up in their bellies.
