Scrapped Cruise Ships fleet

Ms titanic 2, seadream innovation, costa concordia, american glory, costa victoria, carnival inspiration, carnival imagination, carnival fascination, carnival sensation, costa neoromantica, superstar aquarius, pride of burgundy ferry, superstar gemini, pride of kent ferry, pullmantur monarch, review of scrapped cruise ships.

This is CruiseMapper's most unusual theme-section that groups scrapped cruise liners - passenger vessels (including ferries) that exist no more. Mapper's "Scrapped Cruise Ships" is not a cruise line/company or brand name, but just a hub for all these old-timers on which millions of travelers have spent so precious vacation times and still remember their special voyages. Here you will also find a list of now-DEFUNCT cruise lines (companies and brands that went bankrupt).

Scrapped Cruise Ships - CruiseMapper

Cruise vessels' lifespan is ~30-40 years. Eventually, the old ships become either unseaworthy (especially following some major accident ) or too expensive for operation as they require more complicated drydock refit and refurbishment projects to be somehow competitive with all the newbuild vessels . Generally, such older vessels are first sold from the cruise line company to a smaller company that continues to use them for passenger shipping in less novelties-demanding and more budget-oriented markets, like India, China, Korea, Russia, Australia, South America, Caribbean, Southern Europe (Iberia, Mediterranean, Black Sea). Some ships are even converted to overnight cruiseferries carrying both passengers and cars.

Old cruise vessels are either scrapped (dismantled), scuttled (deliberately sunk) or decommissioned from cruising service, permanently berthed and turned into luxury dockside hotels or ship-museums.

Scuttling (deliberate ship sinking) is conducted by allowing seawater to flow into the vessel's hull. This can be done by opening the vessel's hatches to the water, by creating holes into the hull or by using explosives (in some cases even bombing the vessel or gunning it from distance, using it as a shooting target by military ships). Scuttling is usually performed on abandoned or captured vessels, and mainly to prevent them to become a navigation hazard. Some ships are scuttled to become an artificial reef (habitat for marine life) thus serving scuba diving activities.

For detailed information on the shipbreaking process (technologies, largest shipbreakers and shipbreaking yards worldwide, industry policies and new regulations, pollution issues) you can read CruiseMapper's dedicated article Ship Breaking and 40+ Year-Old Cruise Ships . The world's largest shipbreaking yards are n India (Alang) , Bangladesh (Chittagong) , Pakistan (Gadani) , Turkey (Aliaga) . There, the doomed vessels are first run-aground (by beaching at low tide) then dismantled by underpaid workers. Once the ship is on land, yard workers first strip everything useful (furniture, equipment, plastics, glass, etc), dismantle the superstructure, then cut the hull up and collect and recycle everything (from hull's steel plates to the engines and other machinery), discarding only the hazardous materials.

Shipbreaking - CruiseMapper

An example for an abandoned cruiser is MV World Discoverer - which struck a reef off Florida Islands (Solomon Islands) in 2000. All passengers and most crew were evacuated. The vessel under its own power arrived at Roderick Bay where was abandoned near the beach.

Roderick Bay (MS World Discoverer) cruise ship wreckage

Due to the industry's strict regulations, highest safety standards , innovative marine design and implemented modern technologies, cruise vessels usually don't sink. One of the few/best-known exceptions is MS Costa Concordia , which by human error/stupidity ran aground and partially sunk in 2012 off Giglio Island, Italy. The vessel was refloated (at the staggering cost of ~EUR 225 million / ~USD 300 million) and dismantled in Genoa Italy .

Best-known cases of cruise vessels repurposed into floating (dockside moored) hotels are Cunard Line 's classic ocean liners RMS Queen Mary (1934-built, 1967-retired, since then operated as ship-hotel in Long Beach CA USA ) and RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (1969-built, 2008-retired, since 2018 operated as ship-hotel in Dubai UAE ).

The idea for our scrapped cruise liners hub was given by Gerald Sutton. We created it following his passioned email (received on August 25, 2019) in which he wrote: "I want to say how much I love your website and thank you for sharing the life of all of these wonderful ships. I want to help if I may. I noticed that there are many ships still in the Small Cruise Lines section that are scrapped. I wanted to ask if you have room or time to add a "Scrapped" section to your cruise ship list. This way great ships of the past can be saved for all to see and remember and it cleans up the active cruise ship sections. Your website has an amazing history and information about ships that thousands of people enjoyed. Your website is like a historical library for cruise ships. so a section dedicated for scrapped ships would be great."

Cruise ship graveyards: Where do abandoned ships go to die?

Ashley Kosciolek

Have you been forced to say goodbye to your favorite cruise ship recently? Thanks to the effects of the COVID-19 cruise industry shutdown, several cruise lines sold off some of their oldest hardware in an effort to eliminate costly upkeep on vessels that had been in service for decades.

A lucky few vessels were purchased by other operators, but most were sent to cruise graveyards after they were sold for scrap.

What exactly does that mean, though? Where do cruise ships go to die, and what happens to those abandoned cruise ships when they get there?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Cruise ship graveyards

Decommissioned ships are almost always sent to one of two scrapyards. The largest is Alang, located in India's Gulf of Khambhat, which recycles more than half of the world's decommissioned cruise ships. The second largest is Aliaga in Turkey.

When vessels arrive at the graveyard — usually under their own power but sometimes with the aid of tugs if their engines are no longer operational — they run aground on the beach.

Workers called shipbreakers then use machinery to haul them farther up onto the sand so they can begin disassembling them.

The tear-down process for abandoned ships

broken cruise ship

"At both places, ships are run up onto the shore and gradually cut down," Peter Knego, a journalist and ocean liner historian who runs the YouTube channel Peter Knego's MidShipCinema , told TPG.

"In Alang, this is largely done by cutting huge chunks of structure and letting them drop onto the embankment, then cutting those parts into smaller, plate-sized pieces that can be trucked off to the steel mills. In Aliaga, the cut structure is removed with large cranes, then further cut down on shore."

Knego added that tides play a large role, too. "In Alang, [beaching] is usually done during high tide to get the ship as far up as possible, then when the tide recedes, workers walk out to the ship and do their work. In Aliaga, workers are transferred to the ship via cranes with cage-like baskets, and in Alang, the workers climb on board via rope or ... ladders."

The tear-down process is arduous at first, as it involves removing leftover fuel and stripping the ships of any furnishings and fixtures — even toilets — that can be salvaged and sold. Once deconstruction is fully underway, shipbreakers can take a vessel down to just its hull with shocking speed, with scrap metal being sold or recycled.

Environmental concerns

There are also strict environmental precautions that must be taken to avoid the leaking of fuel and other toxic chemicals that could pollute the water and cause harm to marine life. Although scrapyards attempt to follow local regulations, there's still quite a bit of contamination that can happen throughout the scrapping lifecycle.

"Asbestos, which was largely banned in the '80s, was once the greatest concern," Knego said, when asked about the environmental implications of scrapping cruise ships. "But now most ships that are being scrapped are past the asbestos era. [Carcinogenic compounds called polychlorinated biphenyls], oil, fuel remnants, paint and other foulants are still on board most ships, and those can wreak havoc if not disposed of properly. And, of course, plastics ... create toxic fumes when burnt and [present] other issues [when] broken down (or not) in landfills."

Bottom line

If you've recently lost your favorite vessel to the shipbreakers and you're feeling nostalgic, you can ease the blow in a few ways.

Insider Today

British, American, and Italian cruise ships are being dismantled in a sea dock in Turkey as the coronavirus pandemic continues to sink the industry.

Five hulking cruise ships are currently being pulled apart for scrap metal in the port of Aliaga, a town 30 miles north of the Turkish city Izmir.

Among them was the Carnival Fantasy, a newly-refurbished cruise ship recently sold by Carnival Cruise Line after it reported a loss of $4.4 billion in the second quarter of 2020.

Three more ships are set to join, according to Kamil Onal, chairman of a ship recycling industrialists' association.

Before the pandemic, the Turkish ship-breaking yard handled cargo and container ships, Onal told Reuters .

"But after the pandemic, cruise ships changed course towards Aliaga in a very significant way," Onal said, according to Reuters. "There was growth in the sector due to the crisis. When the ships couldn't find work, they turned to dismantling."

Related stories

Around 2,500 scrapyard workers are currently working to dismantle the ships, stripping their walls, windows, and railings, according to Onal. It takes approximately six months to take apart a full passenger ship.

Hotel operators have also visited the site to collect some non-metal fittings, so they do not go to waste, Onal said.

The Turkish shipyard is trying to increase the volume of deconstructed steel from 700,000 tonnes in January to 1.1 million tonnes by the end of the year.

"We are trying to change the crisis into an opportunity," Onal said, according to Reuters.

The coronavirus pandemic has devastated the cruise ship industry after multiple outbreaks occurred at sea and ports worldwide.

Across the industry, by March 25 there had been coronavirus outbreaks on 36 cruise ships, as Business Insider reported .

Ongoing pandemic restrictions, including travel bans and social distancing rules, are still in place,  leaving cruise ships empty, off coasts, or laid-up in docks.

Carnival Cruises, which includes P&O, Princess Cruises, and Cunard,  has laid off workers and slashed salaries  in recent months while Norwegian Cruises  said it has  "significant doubt" about its finances.

A U.S. woman was killed and four other passengers injured when a massive wave struck the Viking Polaris cruise ship while the 231-foot long vessel was sailing in southern Argentina on an Antarctic cruise, authorities said.

The 62-year-old woman was hit by broken glass when the wave broke cabin windows late Tuesday during a storm as the ship sailed toward the port of Ushuaia, Argentine authorities said. The ship suffered limited damage and arrived in Ushuaia, 1,926 miles south of Buenos Aires, the next day.

“It is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident,” Viking said in statement. “We have notified the guest’s family and shared our deepest sympathies.”

Neither the statement nor the Argentine Naval Prefecture identified the woman or her hometown.

Viking called it a “rogue wave incident” and said the four other passengers’ injuries were not life-threatening.

The cruise ship was anchored near Ushuaia, where a federal court has opened a case to determine what happened.

The company indicated on its website that to explore remote regions of the world they have “two purpose-built, state-of-the-art small expedition-class ships: Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris.”

The Viking Polaris, a vessel that has luxury facilities and was built in 2022, has capacity for 378 passengers and 256 crew members.

PHOTOS: Carnival cruise slams into pier, damages side of ship at port

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship was left damaged Tuesday after its side slammed into the side of the pier, causing the pier fender to collapse at one of their ports.

The Carnival Magic, which departed from Florida on Sunday, was docked in Ocho Rios in Jamaica when high winds caused the pier fender to collapse, hitting the ship’s side.

Carnival said the ship docked at 8:10 a.m. in Ocho Rios, but the incident didn’t happen until 11 a.m.

In a statement to WFLA.com, Carnival Cruise Lines said: Carnival Magic was involved in an incident while in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 when strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure, and the ship made contact with the pier.

The cruise line said no one was injured and that all operations continued as normal.

For the safety of the guests and staff aboard, the ship left the area and docked at a nearby pier. All guests that were ashore were able to get back on the ship.

Carnival said the weather conditions caused several cruises to cancel their docking in the Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

The Magic remained in Ocho Rios on Tuesday and into Wednesday. The ship is expected to depart from Jamaica on Wednesday evening.

The Carnival Magic left Miami on Sunday. Its itinerary includes the Bimini Islands on Monday, Ocho Rios, and will return to Miami on Saturday.

Passengers off cancelled Royal Caribbean ship in Seward, ‘no one stranded’

SEWARD, Alaska (KTUU) - The estimated 2,200 passengers on the Royal Caribbean ship, Radiance of the Seas, are off of the vessel, a representative with Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska said on Sunday in Seward.

There were constant coaches taking passengers from the ship Saturday and Sunday. The only people from the cruise who remain in Seward are choosing to stay, the representative said, adding that there are no longer crowds of cruise passengers frequenting the town. There were local tourism companies, such as Seward Ocean Excursions that were completely booked with the extra people in town Saturday, Seward mayor Sue McClure said. A lead reservation agent with Kenai Fjords Tours said that they were overwhelmed by extra visitors on Saturday, saying that they had more than double the people they usually get on a Saturday during this time of year.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines ship named Radiance of the Seas announced to its passengers on Friday that the planned sail from Seward due to depart on Sept. 1 has been cancelled due to mechanical issues with the vessel.

The Radiance of the Seas was due to leave port on Friday for a 7-day cruise making calls in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Haines before reaching its final destination of Vancouver, British Columbia. Passengers were informed on Friday that the cruise would not be taking place.

A letter distributed to passengers cites issues with the vessel’s propulsion system as the reason for cancellation.

“As you may know, on your return to Seward, Alaska, Radiance of the Seas’ propulsion system experienced a technical issue which impacts the ship’s speed,” read a letter distributed to passengers. “Unfortunately, our teams were unable to complete the needed repairs to be able to depart today on our sailing. As a result, we’ll be cancelling this current sailing.”

Passengers will be refunded the complete cost of their cruise and any shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean. Those who also booked their air travel through Royal Caribbean will have their flights rebooked, and those who did not will receive a up to a $600 credit to change pre-booked return flights.

Passengers are permitted to stay on the Radiance of the Seas until Sunday, Sept. 3 and will receive complementary services including internet, beer and wine, and a shuttle into Seward.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has not yet responded to inquiries about the cancellation. It is unknown if the mechanical issues will affect future sailings.

Understanding cruise Ship Injury Settlements

cruise ship injury settlements after lawsuit

An experienced cruise ship injury lawyer can represent you during the claims process. After an initial injury claim and demand letter are made, which outlines your injuries and your reasons for wanting compensation, you may receive a settlement offer from the cruise line. The claims process could take some time – weeks or months even – as both parties collect information related to the case.

Most likely, a settlement will be offered by the cruise line rather than going to court . Again, an experienced attorney will help you navigate the settlement negotiation and advise you on your chances of success in the courtroom for a injury verdict if a settlement offer is not desirable to you. Cruise ship injury settlement amounts can range from just a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars or even millions of dollars depending on the severity of your injuries and the factors involved with your case.

For example, a teenage cruise ship passenger who stumbles, falls and breaks their arm in the cruise ship’s pool area may incur a variety of medical bills, but overall, this could be a minor injury. A 50 year old man who suffered the exact same injury may require a different set of medical procedures, a longer healing time, missed work opportunities and more.

Even what seems like a simple broken arm can results in a complicated set of details which impact your injury settlement. Your attorney will help you understand what’s involved in your case, often on the first phone call with the attorney. *These scenarios assume the cruise line was negligent in its actions or policies and that negligence was directly relate to your injuries.

Many accidents are simply ‘just accidents’ while other accidents are due to the negligence of the cruise line, its employees or even other entities associated with and promoted by the cruise line (like onboard medical personnel or excursion operators).

Can I Recover for Injuries Sustained from a Slip-and-Fall on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships can pose a high-risk for slips, falls, accidents and injuries.

Cruise Ship

Approximately 43% of all cruise passengers are citizens of the United States. But not every cruise has to be to a tropical island. For many Americans, a cruise down the Mississippi or Missouri River is the perfect family vacation get-away. Approximately 50,000 passengers will enjoy local cruises on American Queen Voyages and American Cruise Lines for the 1,200-mile journey down the twisting Mississippi River this year.

The newest and largest ship in the region—the Viking Mississippi—made its inaugural trip down “Old Man River” in 2022 and will carry nearly 18,000 passengers in 2023 to ports in seven states:

  • Louisiana (Baton Rouge, Darrow, New Orleans and St. Francisville)
  • Mississippi (Natchez and Vicksburg)
  • Tennessee (Memphis)
  • Missouri (Hannibal, St. Louis)
  • Iowa (Burlington, Dubuque and Davenport)
  • Wisconsin (La Crosse)
  • Minnesota (Red Wing, St. Paul)

In addition to these larger cruise line excursions, there are multiple, smaller paddlewheel boat cruises that operate on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and carry up to 30,000 passengers every year. Despite the luxury, thrill, and excitement offered aboard any of these vessels, however, cruise ships can pose a high-risk for slips, falls, accidents, and injuries.

What are the Injury and Accident Risks on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships are designed for entertainment and activity. Most large commercial cruise ships are enormous structures that carry thousands of passengers at a time. About 11% of cruise ships can accommodate more than 4,000 passengers onboard. Most cruise ships (32%) host between 2,000 and 3,000 guests. The largest cruise ship in the world as of 2022—Wonders of the Sea—can carry up to 7,000 passengers onboard. It contains 18 decks and is as tall as a 20-story building.

Royal Caribbean has plans to launch an even bigger vessel—Icon of the Sea—in January, 2024. Icon will house 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members on its 20 decks and will span the length of four football fields. According to Forbes Magazine, Icon of the Sea will include amenities such as:

  • A full water park with six “record-breaking” water slides
  • More than 40-restaurants, cafes, bars and lounges
  • Seven pools
  • A two-story “Coastal Kitchen”
  • A Central Park
  • An aqua dome restaurant with water falls and live theatre
  • Eight uniquely diverse neighborhood designs
  • A 3-story family townhouse with a white picket fence and mailbox

Given the size, passenger capacity, and entertainment amenities of even the most basic cruise ship, there are numerous hazards throughout a ship that naturally pose a danger to the safety of those onboard.  Even smaller cruise ships pose hazards to patrons that often result in injury.

Slip-and-fall accidents are the most common ways passengers and crew members are injured on a cruise ship.  Slip-and-fall accidents are as prevalent on cruise ships as they are on normal land surfaces, but cruise ships include potential safety hazards that are inherent to their unique maritime environment. Here are some of the reasons why slip and fall injuries often occur in common areas on a cruise ship:

  • Cruise ships often have a variety of floor surfaces throughout the ship
  • Floor surfaces on a cruise ship often are uneven
  • Open deck surfaces accumulate sea spray and easily become wet and slippery
  • Sea-salt air can corrode floor surfaces very easily
  • Numerous pool areas throughout the ship create wet surfaces that are easily tracked to high-volume traffic areas
  • A variety of common areas, like restaurants, bathrooms, theaters, and dance floors often present foreign substances and create safety hazards
  • Ship floors are often waxed or buffed for maintenance
  • Numerous restaurants and bars onboard lead to spilled drinks, foreign substances, and intoxicated patrons
  • Faulty or lack of slip-resistant or non-skid walkway surfaces
  • Dim lighting in stairwells and walkways
  • Severe weather, high wind conditions, and rough seas
  • Improper maintenance of common areas

All of these conditions contribute to the hazards inherent in a cruise ship environment.

What Law Applies to Slip-and-Fall Cases Onboard a Cruise Ship?

In Missouri, in a normal slip-and-fall case, the victim must prove that the property owner was negligent in failing to correct a dangerous condition that the property owner knew or should have known existed or that the property owner failed to warn the victim of the hazardous condition. When a slip and fall occurs on a cruise ship, federal maritime law governs the liability of the cruise ship. However, federal maritime law adopts a similar negligence theory for proving liability on the part of the cruise line.

To prove negligence for a slip-and-fall on a cruise ship, the victim must prove four things:

  • The cruise line had a duty to protect the passenger from a particular injury;
  • The cruise line breached its duty to protect the passenger;
  • The cruise line’s breach of duty actually and proximately caused the passenger’s injury; and
  • The passenger suffered actual harm as a result of the slip and fall.

These are the normal requirements for proving negligence in a slip and fall case.  However, because of the unique environment and conditions inherent to a cruise ship, the issue of whether a cruise line breached its duty of care to a passenger can apply slightly differently than under normal slip-and-fall conditions on land.

In a normal slip-and-fall case , the victim must show that the property owner knew or should have known of the existence of a particular hazard. For example, if a customer in a store trips over a loose extension cord exposed in the store and sues the store owner for negligence for failure to warn the customer about the loose cord, the customer must show that the store owner knew, or had reason to know, that this particular hazard existed.  Likewise, if someone spilled a bottle of water at the bottom of an escalator in a business office and a client slipped on the spilled water and was injured, to prove that the building owner was negligent, the victim must prove that the building owner knew or should have known that there was a pool of spilled water at the bottom of the escalator but failed to clean it up or warn the client of this hazardous condition. However, courts have held that the duty of a cruise line to protect its patrons may apply differently based on the inherent nature of the cruise environment.

To prove negligence on a cruise, the victim does not have to prove that the cruise line knew or had reason to know of a particular hazard. Instead, the injured passenger only needs to prove that the cruise line had actual or constructive notice that the area where the victim slipped and fell had a reasonable tendency to become wet or slippery or to present a hazard. So, a passenger on a cruise who is injured as a result of a slip-and-fall does not need to prove that the cruise line knew that a particular spot on the surface of an open deck had become slick, that a particular lounge chair blew into the path of a walkway, or that a particular step leading to the water park deck was slippery with water. Instead, the victim only needs to prove that the cruise line had reason to know that certain areas of the ship tend to present dangerous or hazardous conditions because of:

  • Inherent weather conditions
  • The nature of the amenities
  • Typical conditions that natural develop in certain areas of the ship
  • Passengers’ normal use of a specific area.

A cruise line is held to a duty of knowing that the surfaces of open decks become wet and slippery from the sea air, that high winds often blow lounge chairs into walkways on decks, or that swimmers exiting the many pools and water park slides tend to track water into surrounding areas of the ship. The issue then becomes whether the cruise line acted reasonably in fulfilling its duty to protect its passengers based on its knowledge of the inherent hazardous conditions aboard a cruise ship. This can be difficult.  To establish this, you need an experienced slip-and-fall attorney like those at Foster Wallace, LLC.

Why Do I Need an Experienced Slip and Fall Attorney?

If you are like 17% of the total U.S. population, then you have been on a cruise at least once. And if you have been on a cruise before, then you are 80% likely to book your next vacation on another cruise, and there is a 70% chance that your next cruise will be in the coming year. Even if you have never been on a cruise before, you may be one of the 60% of Americans who are likely to undertake their first cruise in the next several years.

If you were on a cruise when you slipped and fell, or if you take a cruise in the future and suffer any kind of injury resulting from a slip-and-fall aboard the ship, you should contact Foster Wallace, LLC, immediately.  To recover for any injuries you may have suffered as a result of your slip-and-fall aboard a cruise ship, you only have a small window of time to file your claim against the operator of the cruise line. Your contract accompanying your tickets for the cruise also could have conditions that limit your ability to sue for damages resulting from an accident. To file your claim correctly and in a timely manner, you need an experienced slip-and-fall attorney to investigate and handle your claim. The attorneys at Foster Wallace, LLC, are experienced with slip-and-fall cases and understand what evidence is necessary to prove that cruise ship operators are liable for the hazards that are naturally present on a cruise ship.

The cruise line industry is a $30-billion-dollar industry. When accidents occur, the cruise line will go to great lengths to avoid liability. But cruise lines have a duty to understand and protect you from the hazardous conditions that naturally occur on a cruise.  If you have been injured on a cruise ship, don’t just assume it was your fault. Let an experienced slip-and-fall attorney at Foster Wallace, LLC, investigate your case and hold the cruise line responsible for providing a safe environment for your vacation cruise. recent broken foot and going on a cruise-need advice

By Nanny8 , November 18, 2016 in Celebrity Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Hi everyone.

I broke my foot about 6 weeks ago and just had my cast removed (6 weeks non-weight bearing). I am now on another 2 weeks non weight bearing and then gradual weight bearing with crutches.

My concern is that I am leaving for a 7 day cruise in 4 weeks and originally my ortho told me I would be able to walk well by mid December. Now he has changed his mind (although my injury did not worsen) and says I will be limited. I'm not sure if anyone has experience in this area but I'm wondering if I should make arrangements to have a wheelchair just in case.

I have bad shoulders (am also recovering from bi-lateral frozen shoulder) and crutches are not my friend.

We have booked a couple of tours but my hubby is worried that an extra walking may be too hard on my foot.

We usually try to walk about 10 miles a day while cruising (keeps the weight gain down lol) but I have managed my expectations for this cruise, realizing that I won't be able to walk very much at all by cruise time.

One of our out-trips is an ATV rental (with hubby driving and me as passenger and we're wondering if we should modify that as well.

Any advice would be very helpful.

It's not like it's very newly broken but given that I am only allowed to begin weight bearing (with crutches) two weeks before the cruise, I'm worried that I may need to be more prepared for having crutches on the cruise.

Thanks in advance

One thing to consider is buying or renting a knee roller like this: http://www.carelinemedical.com/Knee-Walkers-2/Generation-2-Weil-Knee-WalkerBurgandy/?gclid=CNLCouXjstACFYIkgQodkjAOlA

This is not an endorsement of this company, it is just to give you an idea.

My surgeon prescribed it after a fracture and my insurance company covered it.

I don't know what the rude person's problem was, but I understand your question.

I, too had a broken foot before a cruise and we actually bought a foldable, portable wheelchair to take with us.

You might want to check with ship's services to see if you can get one onboard.

We had to cancel one of our excursions, because it wasnt wheelchair friendly, but other than that, my husband pushed me around and we managed quite nicely. Harder on him than it was on me!

Good luck and have fun!

I cruised, with doctor's permission, with my foot in a cast. I had a mobility scooter and easily navigated both the airport, and pre-cruise hotel, then had absolutely no problem getting around the ship. Was unable to put any weight on the foot during the whole time. I did not have a handicapped room and it was tight getting the scooter into the toom but I managed. I went to the spa to take showers since there wee seats in the showers there. Highly recommend a scooter.

So much walking on a cruise ship- especially on an S-class ship! I would certainly look into a wheelchair or scooter so that you don't damage your foot.

I have a torn tendon in my ankle and have an aft cabin on our upcoming cruise, so I'm bringing a tensor bandage and sensible shoes to try to keep the swelling down.

Get well soon and enjoy your cruise!

This is excellent advice! I have not cruised with a broken foot, but have broken my foot twice. The first time i was in college, and the above device was a lifesaver. My campus was really spread out! Fortunately for me, I only had 2 back to back classes that I had to hightail it too. This miracle device really helped with the long distances between buildings. It's nice because it has three wheels, so it is very stable. If I needed a break, I could sit on the pad. It does do a number on your good leg! But I'm guessing by the time you cruise, your good leg will really be in tip top shape!

I would maybe cancel the ATV tour, just in case. Make this cruise all about relaxation!

I was able to figure out you were not seeking medical advice!:D Not sure why it is so hard for some to realize this isn't why you posted. Don't let the cranky people on her dissuade you from posting questions. This really is a great community, full of great advice!

Have a wonderful cruise!

I'd look into less active excursions...ones where u are driven or sit at a beach or other nice location....rather than active adventures that involve climbing, hiking, biking or touring museums..gardens etc..with alot of walking.

..Also avoid tenders that can be hard to board and be very careful on the walkways off the ship...some can be very slippery and set up at odd angles.

After I had surgery, I went on a cruise a month later .(Royal C Radiance class ship) I was limited to what I could do & enjoyed taking the little tram trains in several ports and non walking activities on shore.. We had a stateroom close to the main elevators which helped . Used the elevators, and took things slower.Enjoyed the spa, hot tubs etc.

Also packed lighter to avoid having to struggle with luggage.

Hope it works out...can be done.

A few years ago my wife and I were on a Celebrity cruise while she recovered from a surgically repaired broken ankle. I had arranged for her to have a scooter on board, a walker when off ship and excursions by car service-she couldn't get up the steps of a tour bus. Worked well because we got to see only what we wanted to see and not what or as long as the guide wanted.

I don't think I would cancel the ATV excursion. Depending on getting to there and back, you will be riding. You might miss some of the sights by not being able to walk to see things but could enjoy the view from on the ATV. Read reviews from the excursion and then decide what you think you can handle. As long as you can keep up with the others, go and enjoy.

janmcn

I'd arrange to rent a wheelchair to pick up at the dock. Not sure where you are leaving from...but vendors are at many ports. Then you'll have it for when you want to take it easy. I developed tendinitis in my patellar tendon and had to rent a chair for our 3-week cruise. It allowed me to do some things that otherwise would have been impossible.

Have you checked with your insurance company they are happy for you to cruise? The answer will probably be yes but worth while to check now rather than have a problem if you did slip or fall on the ship....

If you can cancel your pre booked excursions without charge I would do so and then look again nearer the time based on what you can 'comfortably' do. The important thing post breakages is to slowly and unstressfully build up muscle strength....you may find short morning excursions with some, but limited walking, followed by pool afternoons benefit you more on this cruise.

Sincere best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Fish Lover

You have multiple options.

You can rent a mobility scooter for your time on the cruise. There are even companies that will bring it to the ship and be there to take it back when you disembark.

You can also rent a manual or motorized chair locally and bring it n board yourself. .

You can get a wheel chat from Celebrity, however for off the ship (in port) they give you a very heavy clunky hard to push version. Unless you have a youngish strong person to push, it's a problem. On board they will give you a light weight chair. You can call ahead (in fact you must) to make arrangements. Call back often to confirm. Their land line customer service {all departments} is less than efficient. Also, with the shoulder problem, this may not work well for you.

I most certainly would advise you not to go on an ATV. If you can't put your full weight on your foot, it risky {even irresponsible}to engage in that activity. Remember, if something happens, you impact everyone traveling with you and you will be responsible for handling the situation yourself.

Try and have an enjoyable cruise despite the temporary limitations.

I just completed a cruise with a scooter for the first time due to a hip injury. It was a foldable travel scooter and it gave me terrific independence on and off the ship. My DH could go do his thing and I could go off to my activities. He didn't have to push me around in a wheelchair all the time. Although I wasn't crazy about having to use a scooter, I can't imagine how I would have been able to enjoy the cruise without it. That was my experience.

I used a knee roller when I broke my foot and I didn't put on any weight. I sped up and down the Las Vegas strip! One of my friends commented on how I had kept my weight down after my injury as many people put on weight. I was very active with my knee roller! I would fly through the mall and grocery stores. If you used one on board the ship, you would get lots of exercise. Not sure how you would do off the ship. You do have to be careful about the surfaces you roll over. Don't want to go head over heels hitting a crack in the pavement (which I heard can happen).

When I broke my foot, three weeks later I went on a Disney Cruise. Fortunately I had just had my cast removed, but I wasn't allowed to put any weight on my foot. It was quite an ordeal getting me on board the airplane because we had to board from the ground and up the steps into the plane. A big, hefty man had to pull me up the steps! Thank goodness I hadn't put on any extra weight!

It was only a three night cruise so I opted to stay on board when my family members got off the ship to explore. It was a very short cruise. On board the ship I decided to rent an electric scooter which was very convenient. I could have used my knee scooter, but taking a break from it was nice, too.

This is also an excellent point, Thanks for the reminder to do that. Our insurance company states that my condition must be stable so I will have the doctor give me a letter if that is the case.

If you have excursions with others, I would cancel them since you will have mobility issues. You don't want to hold people up.
You have multiple options.   You can rent a mobility scooter for your time on the cruise. This is good to know about the different wheelchair styles. My hubby is fit enough to help me with the wheelchair if I require it however given that the temps may be quite warm in the Caribbean it may make his day uncomfortable.

I appreciate the head's up Thanks so much

We have one excursion with others so I'm going to check with the tour operator and see what his thoughts are on the mobility situation. The ATV is actually just us renting one on our own so that we can go at our own speed and go to stops that mobility won't be an issue. We had decided on this even before I got the bad news yesterday about continued non-weight bearing.

It looks like my hubby is leaning towards trying to rent a car on the others stops so that we can just drive around and enjoy.

I'm so appreciative of all the advice.

Is this scooter you are talking about the same as the knee roller? I am currently using a knee roller (because crutches are very unsteady and bad shoulders). I find it good but as others have said, you can't really use it well on pavement or rough surfaces (it's very tippy). In my head I'm thinking what you are talking about it a four wheel type walker with a seat but I'm not sure. Just wanting to clarify. Thanks so much

Last Thanksgiving we did a cruise 5 weeks post foot fracture. Had 4 more weeks to go and was non weigh-bearing. DH reserved a wheel chair day I had the fall. Subsequently, I bought a knee roller similar to what was in link from Cruzzinma. I used both, but far and away enjoyed the knee roller. As another poster said, I felt like I got plenty of exercise using it rather than being pushed and feeling so much more handicapped. One of the biggest reasons I enjoyed my knee roller, and it was a life lesson at same time, I was on eye level with others rather then " beneath" them. Interesting experience both ways. Another really SILLY observation was the looks on faces of other cruisers when elevator door opens and they see either the wheel chair or the knee roller which takes up HALF THE SPACE in the elevator. Plus half the time I was only moving 1 floor. Big lesson in patience for others in future experiences. Make sure knee roller has basket though most do, bought a cheap backpack to slide over handle bars and I was almost self-sufficient. We did have a handicapped room which did help with showering and storage of both devises. Some evenings I let DH push me to dinner because I was really tired from all the miles I logged during the day. I broke my right foot, my dominant side, so I became much strionger for the experience. Was a Carribbean Cruise so we did no excursions. Went out in Falmouth on knee scooter but returned to ship quickly as pavers everywhere and hard to steer knee roller over that kind of surface. Another observation, knee roller fun conversation piece, wheel chair not at all.

I only mention that because we toured with one person who recently had a knee replacement. They couldn't keep up with the rest of the group as they wanted to stop and rest every 5 minutes. Europe is not mobility or ADA friendly.

I spent many weeks in the 15-16 school year using a knee scooter after an ankle injury. There are two kinds - the standard kind and the kind made to go off road. The off-road kind has larger tires that have some traction on wet pavement and can handle pavers and uneven pavement.

For a cruise I would try to get an accessible room and rent a mobility scooter. DD used a regular WC a couple of years ago, and we wished she had a scooter.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I'm expecting to enjoy the cruise with or without the mobility issues. I've determined that I can still swim (in the pool) and that I can enjoy the much needed rest and relaxation and sun.

I'm likely going to be bringing a knee-scooter (as recommended by many of you) just in case my foot gets too tired from trying to walk with crutches.

I just knew someone on these boards who have had a similar experience and would be able to offer some suggestions.

Thank you all.

Just a gentle reminder that crutches can be dangerous on a moving ship. You can easily lose your balance.

I went on a cruise shortly after I had a rod inserted in broken leg(femur).Could not weight bear.Suggest you contact cruise customer service.get the info for the companies they use for the electric scooters. It is a private company-but they are at the ship and they will deliver the scooter to your cabin.Works great and when you leave they pick up from cabin. Also tell cruise you need pier assist because of your mobility issue-they will assist you onboard.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

Follow live updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Cargo Ship

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said.

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.

Propulsion Issues Fixed, Royal Caribbean Ship Cleared to Sail

Andrea Santillan

  • September 11, 2023

After canceling two cruises aboard Radiance of the Seas over propulsion issues, Royal Caribbean announced that repairs are underway and the ship will be ready for its September 15 cruise.

Radiance of the Seas propulsion issues

An email to passengers read, “Our Marine Technical Team has given us the green light and we’re thrilled to announce that Radiance of the Seas will be returning to service beginning with our September 15th sailing.”

Fixing Propulsion Issues on Radiance

Since docking in Seward, Alaska, on September 1, specialized technicians from Northern Europe have been flown in to care for its propulsion issues.

According to the same correspondence, the repairs are finalized, and the Radiance-class vessel is readied for sea trials.

Anticipating possible safety concerns, the cruise company assured passengers that “seaworthiness was never in question – the propulsion issue only impacted our speed and ability to make it to ports on time.”

Seward Alaska small boats

Built-in 1998, the 22-year-old cruise ship experienced problems with its navigation system towards the end of August, forcing the world’s largest cruise line to cancel its September 1 and September 8 itineraries on short notice. With each sailing hosting over 2,000 passengers and entailing air travel for many, the cancellations were inconvenient and prompted upcoming passengers to worry about their bookings.

As expected, the good news of the ship’s operational status was met with rejoicing by incoming passengers. After posting the update on the Royal Caribbean Blog’s Facebook page, Christine Kirby wrote, “I am on this cruise and we are screaming with excitement!!!”

Meanwhile, Diana Gravlin Lack posted, “Good news we are booked for the Sept 29 Cruise on Radiance OTS!!!”

Seward Alaska port

The September 15 sailing is the final one-way Alaskan cruise for the season. It features a seven-night itinerary from Seward, Alaska to Vancouver, Canada. In addition to sailing near Hubbard Glacier, it includes port stops at Juneau , Icy Strait Point, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Canada’s Inside Passage.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

broken cruise ship

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said. Royal Caribbean International will contact guests and travel partners once plans are final, the operator said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Two people were rescued and the remaining six are presumed dead, officials said. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power moments before colliding with the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: All six missing victims are presumed dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said, and the agency has ended rescue efforts. The entire crew aboard the 985-foot container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent “mayday.” It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and tofu .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spans the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge over the Patapsco River will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

Broken Leg on a Cruise Ship

Leg injury from a slip and fall on a cruise ship.

Simply falling down on a cruise ship can result in breaking one or both bones in the leg. However, breaking the femur or thighbone usually is the result of a more significant fall. We commonly investigate and represent passengers who have broken their legs on cruise ships after slipping on a wet surface on a deck or stairs or tripping and falling on one of the many raised thresholds that separate different areas of the ship. The thresholds necessary tripping hazards and are often are found found dividing the balcony from the stateroom, the hallway that leads to the cabin or even between the bathroom and cabin itself.

There are a number of serious complications associated with broken legs, such as knee problems, uneven leg length, healing difficulties, arthritis and compartmental syndrome. Compartmental syndrome occurs when there is muscle damage in addition to the broken bone that can result in serious permanent and debilitating medical conditions.

The onboard doctors and medical facilities usually use an X-ray to diagnose the exact location of a leg break. However, we have seen many cases where the ship’s doctors have failed to properly diagnose fractures (breaks) causing the hurt passenger to delay receiving the appropriate care and treatment.

Don’t Wear Flip Flops!

Probably the best way to avoid breaking your leg while on a cruise ship is to simply NOT wear flip flops. These rubber soled sandals provide little to know support if you encounter a wet, slippery or greasy deck

In addition, another way to avoid breaking your leg during your cruise is to limiting your alcohol consumption. We realize this can be difficult, especially when cruise lines like Carnival offer alcohol packages which appear to be simply designed to make getting drunk even easier.

Live updates: Biden wants the federal government to fund Baltimore bridge repairs

The container ship Dali is seen after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore early Tuesday.

Editor's note: This page is no longer being updated. Follow the latest at npr.org and wypr.org.

Part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday morning after a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship, the Dali , crashed into it, sending people into the water in what authorities are calling a "developing mass casualty event." Here's what we're following:

  • Officials say eight construction workers were repairing potholes on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two people have been rescued, one of them seriously injured.
  • The Dali, which was traveling from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, had issued a "mayday" warning before the collision, which helped authorities reduce traffic on the bridge.

Gov. Moore says the situation is still an 'active search and rescue mission'

By Jonathan Franklin

During an afternoon news conference, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters the Baltimore bridge situation is still an “active search and rescue mission" as six people remain missing.

Moore said he spoke to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris following the bridge collapse, and the two voiced their “full-throated” support.

The governor added that air, land and sea resources are being deployed to Baltimore to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

“There is not a single resource that we will hold off on deploying,” Moore said.

“This will not be short, there’s going to be a long road,” he added. “There's going to be a long road, not just as we go from search and rescue. There will be a long road as we talk about what does the future of this region, the future of the area looked like.“

‘Search and rescue is still underway,’ NTSB chair says

"What I can tell you is, a search and rescue is still underway," National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a mid-afternoon update from the shore near Baltimore’s harbor.

Investigators are also working to verify how many crew members were on board the Dali container ship, and what their status is, Homendy said.

In an incident that has brought a large number of state, local and federal agencies to bear, Homendy laid out who’s doing what.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the bridge collapse, she said, while the Coast Guard is leading the search and rescue effort. And for now, she said, her teams are staying away from the ship to give the search operation room.

A main priority, she said, will be to acquire the ship’s recorders, which could provide more insights into the catastrophic collision.

NTSB has 24 people on site, including her, Homendy said. She added that her counterparts in Singapore, where the Dali is flagged, are also sending people to Baltimore to help with the inquiry.

Shippers are scrambling to reroute cargo

By Scott Horsley

The Dali cargo ship is seen in the background of the ramp to the Key Bridge after its collapse on Tuesday.

Some $80 billion worth of cargo passes through the Port of Baltimore each year. With the port’s shipping channel closed indefinitely by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge, shippers are scrambling to find alternate routes.

Some vessels have already been diverted to Norfolk, Va., said Margie Shapiro, who runs a century-old freight handling business in Baltimore. Other traffic could be rerouted through New York or Philadelphia.

Cargo already at the port will have to travel overland, but truck traffic will also be snarled by the loss of the bridge, which severed an important interstate highway.

“The whole ecosystem is going to be a little bit off,” Shapiro said. “Removing the Port of Baltimore from the equation just changes the whole chemistry. And we’ve lived that before with the Suez Canal disruption. When the ecosystem gets messy, things get messy. Freight rates go up. The world gets a little bit chaotic.”

Cargo traffic through the Suez Canal has been curtailed due to attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen, while shipping through the Panama Canal has been limited by drought.

“We never get a break,” Shapiro said. She's been hearing from many of her clients, concerned about delayed deliveries and higher expenses.

She's heard an unofficial estimate that it could take two months to clear the shipping channel so cargo vessels can resume sailing.

President Biden also stressed the importance of reopening the port as quickly as possible.

“Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we're going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers," Biden said.

In the meantime, shipping companies are expected to declare a force majeure, invoking a clause in their contracts that allows them to drop Baltimore-bound cargo in other ports, leaving the recipient to bear the cost of additional transportation.

Baltimore's mayor says the state is in touch with construction workers' families

By Rachel Treisman

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott talks with the media on Tuesday.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who has been at the scene of the bridge collapse all morning, told NPR's Morning Edition that the focus remains on trying to save lives "until it's no longer a search and rescue mission."

Scott said crews are still looking for the six construction workers known to be in the water.

They were "simply just working, providing for their families, trying to make transit for other folks in Baltimore and Maryland better," he said.

He said Maryland officials are in contact with the families of those unaccounted for, and "will continue to lift them up and support them in every way."

Scott said authorities do not believe there was anyone driving on the bridge as it collapsed, though that could change.

He credited transit personnel with shutting down traffic in both directions after the ship put out its mayday call, saying they are "heroes for doing that."

Scott himself had just gotten off the phone with President Biden, and has been talking to members of the administration all day. He reiterated that Baltimore is getting strong support from local, state and federal agencies and is confident that will continue.

"We're going to continue to do the work," he said. "Anything that we need, we will ask for for sure."

Biden wants federal government to pay 'entire cost' of rebuilding bridge: 'We're not leaving until this job gets done'

By NPR's Washington Desk

In an address from the White House about the bridge collapse in Baltimore, President Biden said he intends for the federal government to “pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. And I expect the Congress to support my effort.”

He vowed, “We're not leaving until this job gets done.”

“This is going to take some time,” he said, “the people of Baltimore can count on us, though, to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt.”

He said prayers are with the families waiting to hear about their loved ones who are still unaccounted for.

He said every indication so far is that the event was an accident and not intentional.

Biden said ship traffic in the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until the channel is cleared. He noted that it is one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S.

“We're gonna get it up and running again as soon as possible. Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we're gonna do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers,” Biden said.

Asked if the company that owned the ship should be held responsible, but he said, “That could be, but we’re not going to wait for that to happen. We’re going to pay for it to get the bridge rebuilt and open.”

He said he plans to go to Baltimore “as quickly as I can.” Biden is scheduled to fly with Vice President Harris to North Carolina this afternoon.

The White House says Biden spoke with the following federal, state and local officials:

  • Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Department of Transportation
  • Governor Wes Moore (MD)
  • Senator Ben Cardin (MD)
  • Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD)
  • Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07)
  • Mayor Brandon M. Scott, Baltimore, MD
  • Johnny Olszewski, Executive of Baltimore County, MD

'It could've happened to us:' A Baltimore couple discuss losing a landmark bridge near their home

Miamonique Brooks, 38, and Travis Brooks, 36, both of Baltimore, spoke to NPR near the site of the bridge collapse in Dundalk, Maryland.

Miamonique and Travis Brooks of Baltimore were stunned when they heard the news of the bridge collapse.

They told NPR's Laurel Wamsley in Dundalk that they used to drive over the Francis Scott Key Bridge to get to work every day until they moved downtown several months ago — and they just happened to take that route again yesterday.

"It's crazy, we were just on that bridge," said Travis. "It could've happened to us."

Miamonique called the experience "an eye-opener to appreciate life." She said it was bittersweet, knowing that she and her husband are safe but that others are not.

"It's very sad to hear of tragedy," she added. "But as far as for my husband and I, it's just a blessing that we are here today and it just showed us that we have purpose."

The couple ended up back at the site of the bridge on Tuesday morning on their way to work. Miamonique said they tried to take a route that would be out of the way, "but we got right in the way because of the trucks." She said a drive that would normally take no more than 20 minutes stretched into nearly an hour.

They also stopped to take pictures for her family back in Georgia, who had checked in on them earlier.

"It is London Bridge falling down, just in Baltimore," said Miamonique, marveling at the crumpled structure. "'Cause it's so long — well, it was — and now it doesn't look like that anymore."

She said the bridge was not only a beautiful sight and a Baltimore landmark, but also a critical route for trucks that can't fit through highway tunnels closer to downtown. For people who live in their area outside of the city, Miamonique said, the "shorter route won't be shorter anymore."

"That's gonna be wicked," she said of the traffic. "Because that bridge is literally the only way out if you have to come over to this area."

President Biden to speak about the Key Bridge collapse

By Bill Chappell

President Biden was briefed earlier Tuesday about the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. The White House said he would speak about what looks to be a tragic accident before departing for a trip to North Carolina.

Track the Dali’s path to calamity; at least 6 large ships are trapped in harbor

The stunning collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Md., severed an important highway — and draped a ribbon of steel and concrete across a vital waterway used by freight and civilian craft.

The container ship Dali had been escorted from its docking and out toward the large bridge by two tugboats, the Eric McAllister and the Bridget McAllister, according to a re-creation of its path from the Vessel Finder marine tracking website.

Transponder data shows the Dali quickly speeding up as the two tugboats leave it, eventually reaching 8.8 knots on a southeast bearing of around 140 degrees. It slows slightly as it nears the bridge — but the ship also veers some 15 degrees further south — sending it into a large support column in the Patapsco River.

The two tugboats then rush back toward the stricken ship. A Coast Guard craft arrives shortly after, as emergency and rescue vessels flock to the scene.

The bridge is now blocking the harbor’s entrance, and at least six high-capacity commercial vessels are essentially trapped, according to live data from Vessel Finder.

The vessels include the cargo ships Balsa 94 and Saimaagracht; the bulk carriers Klara Oldendorff; Jy River; and Phatra Naree; and the vehicle carrier Carmen.

Three large inactive naval auxiliary ships are also in the harbor, along with dozens of passenger, charter and pleasure craft that use moorages in the Inner Harbor area.

The busy Port of Baltimore is suspending vessel traffic until further notice

Cargo containers are readied for transport at the Port of Baltimore in 2021.

Vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice, port officials announced late Tuesday morning .

"This does not mean the Port of Baltimore is closed," they wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Trucks are being processed within our marine terminals."

They added that they do not know how long the suspension will last, but will provide an update as soon as that is determined.

"Until then please keep those involved in your prayers," they added.

The port is the deepest harbor in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, with five public and 12 private terminals. It's also within an overnight drive of one-third of the nation's population, according to the state .

And it ranks 9th in the nation for both total dollar value and tonnage of international cargo.

It collectively handled more than 847,000 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port for the 13th consecutive year. It also ranked first in the nation last year in handling automobiles, light trucks, farm and construction machinery and imported sugar and gypsum.

The Port of Baltimore generates about 15,300 direct jobs, with another nearly 140,000 linked to port activities, per the state.

And it continues to set records: Gov. Wes Moore announced just last month that the port handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, in 2023.

In other words, the suspension of this busy Baltimore port is likely to have ripple effects far beyond the city.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the bridge collapse. It announced on X , formerly Twitter, that it is launching a "go team" and will hold a press briefing later Tuesday.

The NTSB website says a go team consists of "technical experts needed to solve complex transportation safety problems." When on duty, they must be reachable 24 hours a day.

"Most Go Team members do not have a suitcase pre-packed because there's no way of knowing whether the accident scene will be in Florida or Alaska, but they do have tools of their trade and necessary safety equipment such as hard hats, goggles, steel toed shoes," it added.

Ship’s mayday signal allowed officials to stop many vehicles before bridge collapse

Video footage moments before the collapse shows cars and trucks traveling over the bridge — but traffic seems to halt roughly 30 seconds before a large pillar gives way, triggering the structure’s rapid failure.

The crew of the Dali container ship alerted authorities that it was losing power, officials said in an update late Tuesday morning.

“We're thankful that between the mayday and the collapse that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic, so more cars were not up on the bridge,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters, adding that the intervention saved lives.

It was “shocking and heartbreaking” to learn the Key Bridge had collapsed, the governor said.

Moore also said no structural problems had been reported in the span: “In fact, the bridge was actually fully up to code.”

As bad as the catastrophe was, it could have been even worse — if the ship had hit the bridge at morning rush hour, for instance.

“Roughly about 35,000 people a day” use the bridge, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said.

There have been reports that vehicles fell into the water when the bridge gave way — and it's possible that those belonged to the eight-person construction crew.

When Wiedefeld was asked if searchers think any people might be in a vehicle in the water, he replied, "No, we do not believe so."

Authorities are still searching for six people, likely all construction workers

The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sits on top of the container ship Dali after the bridge collapsed in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Authorities said at a mid-morning briefing that search and rescue operations remain underway, with six people still unaccounted for.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said an eight-person construction crew had been working on the bridge, but stressed that there were no structural issues and that they were "basically repairing potholes."

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore also said at the briefing that the bridge was "fully up to code."

As of around 10 a.m. ET, the number of people rescued remains at two, one of whom is hospitalized.

"Response teams are doing everything in our power to rescue and recover the victims of this collapse literally as we speak," Moore said.

Authorities did not provide a timeline but stressed that their sole priority is search and rescue at the moment and that state and federal agencies are working together to get resources where they're needed.

U.S. Sen Chris Van Hollen, D-M.D., spoke about how the federal government is supporting the state, from the Coast Guard to the Army Corps of Engineers.

William J. DelBagno, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Baltimore Field Office, said the FBI is contributing crisis response resources, victims services and underwater search evidence recovery teams. He said the agency will provide resources as long as necessary and help take the investigation "to its logical conclusion."

He also emphasized that "there is no specific or credible information to suggest that there are ties to terrorism in this incident."

Officials are asking the public to be patient as more information becomes available and to keep those affected in their thoughts.

The Key Bridge has a rich and patriotic history

The Key Bridge isn't just a vital transportation route. It also has a special historical significance.

The structure itself was built between 1972 and 1977, opening to the public on March 23 of that year.

But its history goes much deeper than that, according to the state. Scholars believe it stood within 100 yards of the site where its namesake, Francis Scott Key, witnessed the failed British bombardment of Fort McHenry in September 1814.

The bombardment was a key turning point in the War of 1812, forcing the British to abandon the land assault on the crucial port city of Baltimore. The two sides reached a peace agreement later that year.

In short: British warships fired thousands of exploding mortar shells, cannonballs and rockets at the fort for more than a full day, but inflicted only minor damage because it was so heavily fortified. The Americans raised their garrison flag the next morning.

Key, an American lawyer, watched the battle from the British warship he had boarded to negotiate the release of a detained American civilian. The awe he felt at seeing the flag rise the next morning inspired him to write "Defense of Fort McHenry," which was renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and became the U.S. national anthem in 1931.

The Key Bridge is vital for Maryland drivers and anyone traversing the East Coast

The Key Bridge is a vital transportation route, not just for Baltimore-area commuters but anyone driving up or down the Eastern Seaboard.

The four-lane, 1.6-mile bridge sees a traffic volume of some 11.3 million vehicles each year, according to state data.

It's the outermost of only three interstate crossings of the Baltimore Harbor into downtown Baltimore, and the only one that's a bridge. The other two are tunnels.

Matt Bush of member station WYPR told Morning Edition that it's heavily trafficked by Maryland residents and anyone who drives along the East Coast, particularly between New York and Washington, D.C.

"This is one of three ways to get through Baltimore on the interstate, and this is the one that's furthest away from downtown, so many people trying to avoid downtown traffic end up using this," he explained.

Bush said he was not aware of any recent safety concerns involving the bridge, adding that the most recent debate about it was over an increase in toll prices.

In the wake of its collapse, the Maryland Transportation Authority is asking commuters to avoid the southeast corridor of I-695, colloquially called the Baltimore Beltway. Drivers should use the I-95 or I-895 tunnels to cross the harbor instead and prepare for delays.

Further complicating some drivers' morning commutes, vehicles transporting hazardous materials (including propane over 10 pounds) are prohibited in those tunnels. They should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, authorities say.

A team of construction workers was on the bridge

The collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge is shown over the Patapsco River after being struck by a cargo ship on Tuesday.

Search and rescue teams were working early Tuesday to find anyone who was on the Francis Scott Key Bridge — and that includes a crew of construction workers who were working on the structure, says Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J Wiedefeld.

“They were basically doing some concrete deck repair,” Wiedefeld said.

When asked how large the work team was, the transportation head said that on such projects, “other workers show up sometimes. So that’s what we’re investigating.”

It’s too early to know precisely how many people in total were on the bridge when its central steel structure gave way, Wiedefeld said.

The water is approximately 50 feet deep in the area beneath the bridge, he said. Wiedefeld also said that officials have set up a facility where family members who believe they’ve lost a loved one in the bridge collapse can come for information and counseling.

Catastrophic bridge collapse was caught on video

The moment that the Dali container ship struck a support column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge — causing a large portion of the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River — was caught on video.

After the collapse, rescue crews at the scene began trying to reach anyone who was on the bridge at the time, from vehicles that were caught on the bridge’s roadway to construction workers who were doing repairs to the bridge’s concrete deck.

Officials say it’s too early to know how many people were on the bridge.

The ship management company says all crew members are accounted for

The container ship Dali is seen with debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday.

The company that manages the ship says all of its crew members are accounted for, and there are no injuries or pollution resulting from the crash.

Synergy Marine Group said in a statement that the Dali collided with one of the Key Bridge pillars around 1:30 a.m. ET "whilst under pilotage with two pilots onboard."

It said there were 22 crew members on board, "all Indian." The ship was heading from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

"Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the ‘DALI’ has now mobilised its Qualified Individual Incident response service," it added. "The US Coast Guard and local officials have been notified, and the owners and managers are fully cooperating with Federal and State government agencies under an approved plan."

The vessel is managed by Synergy but owned by a different company, Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd.

Maryland's governor has declared a state of emergency

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency over the bridge collapse, he announced on the platform X early Tuesday.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," he wrote .

Moore said his office is in communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and will remain in close contact with the various local, state and federal entities "that are carrying out rescue efforts as we continue to assess and respond to this tragedy."

Moore visited the area himself later in the morning.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration announced flight restrictions around the area of the bridge on Tuesday morning, with a radius of five nautical miles and up to 2,000 feet above mean sea level.

"Do not interfere with rescue operations," it wrote on X. "If you fly, emergency response operations cannot."

Images from the scene Tuesday morning along the interstate’s path on land show segments of the bridge leading up from the highway and jutting into the open sky. A central portion of the bridge was snapped off at the points on either side where steel support beams once spanned the waterway.

Aerial photos show those beams are now part of a tangle of metal stretching across the water — and heaped onto the container ship’s prow.

Baltimore's mayor says the focus should be on the people, not the bridge

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, with Mayor Brandon Scott (R) and Fire Department Chief James Wallace (L), speaks at a press conference early Tuesday.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the bridge collapse an "unthinkable tragedy," comparing it to something out of an action movie.

At Tuesday morning's press conference, he urged people to pray for everyone impacted, from the people "we have to try to find and save" to family members and first responders.

"We're going to continue to work in partnership with every part of government to do everything that we can to get us to the other side of this tragedy," he said.

When asked about plans for rebuilding the Key Bridge, Scott said that's not the priority right now.

"There will be time to discuss the bridge and how to get the bridge back up," he said. "But right now there are people in the water, and that's the only thing we should be worried about."

Darkness, tides and cold temperatures complicate the search and rescue mission

The wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday, with the cargo ship Dali in the background.

Authorities said at sunrise Tuesday that a search and rescue mission will continue for at least the next eight to 12 hours.

But there are some complicating factors, as Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace explained.

"We're battling darkness," he said before 7 a.m. "It's quite possible we may have somebody there that we've not seen yet."

Even in daylight, he said the water of the Patapsco River is "current-influenced," and the incoming tide adds an additional challenge.

"We can certainly dive in these conditions, but we have to take a lot of factors into play," he said, including that people may have been in the water for a significant time.

The water temperature in the area is 48.2 degrees just before 8 a.m., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . That's slightly warmer than the current air temperature of almost 42 degrees.

The Weather Channel forecasts a high of 58 degrees in Baltimore today, with partly cloudy skies in the morning to become overcast in the afternoon. The National Weather Service has a coastal flood advisory in place for the Baltimore area until 5 p.m., warning of "tides two and a half to three feet above normal."

The sun will set at 7:25 p.m.

Wallace stressed there is no set end time for the search and rescue mission yet.

"We're going to rely on the experts, which are our dive masters that are here, our dive team, to tell us when they believe we've reached that non-survivability point," he said.

Authorities are in touch with the ship and investigating a possible fuel spill

Authorities also spoke at the briefing about the Dali, the ship responsible for the collision and collapse.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said search and rescue crews must examine the ship's deck but need to complete a damage assessment before they can board.

He said the ship's crew remains on board and has been communicating with authorities via the Coast Guard. The rescue operation has not interacted directly with the pilot, he added.

It is not known whether any crew members are among those in the water.

Authorities from multiple agencies are also working to determine whether there is an active fuel spill from the vessel, now that the sun is up. Wallace said there have been reported diesel odors, but no confirmation yet.

While the exact details of the collision remain unclear, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at the briefing that law enforcement's early investigations show "absolutely no indication this was done on purpose."

Two people have been rescued from the water so far

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said emergency responders removed two individuals from the water after the bridge collapsed.

Speaking to reporters early Tuesday morning, he said the first 911 calls about the bridge collapsing came around 1:40 a.m., and the first responders on the scene arrived some 10 minutes later.

"Our first unit arrived on scene and reported a complete collapse of the Key Bridge," he recounted. "We were also given information at that time that there were likely multiple people on the bridge at the time of the collapse and that, as a result, multiple people were in the water."

He said responders were able to remove two people from the water. One individual refused service and transport: "Essentially, that person was not injured."

The other was transported to a local trauma center in "very serious condition," Wallace said.

He said authorities don't have information on the ages and genders of those two individuals, or whether they should be included among the seven people in the water that the search and rescue mission is looking for. He said the second patient is injured severely enough that law enforcement has not been able to debrief them.

A reporter asked whether as many as 20 people could be unaccounted for. Wallace said authorities believe the number is at least seven, but didn't rule out the possibility of more.

A search and rescue mission is underway for 'upwards of seven individuals'

Parts of the Francis Scott Key Bridge remain after a container ship collided with its support structure early Tuesday.

Maryland authorities said at a Tuesday morning briefing that a search-and-rescue mission is underway and will remain active for "some time" once the sun comes up.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said authorities believe they are looking for "upwards of several individuals," but stressed that the incident involves a "very large footprint" and information is subject to change.

He said state and local law enforcement agencies and first responders are on the scene to search the surface of the Patapsco River, as well as the deck of the ship and underwater.

"Over the next eight to 12 hours you can expect to continue to see our air and maritime assets functioning out on the water and in the air above," he said.

That effort involves various types of sonar, unmanned aerial vehicles and — throughout the night — infrared technology.

Wallace said that sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water, but did not specify how many. It is unclear how many cars were on the bridge when it collapsed shortly before 2 a.m.

A container ship hit a Baltimore bridge, sending parts and people into the water

By Ayana Archie

The sun rises over the collapsed portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday.

A part of a Baltimore bridge serving as both an essential highway artery and a hub for shipping along the East Coast collapsed early Tuesday morning after a container ship crashed into it, sending people into the water.

The collision spurred a large search-and-rescue operation, and it was unclear how many people were in the Patapsco River. However, Kevin Cartwright, the Baltimore City Fire Department's director of communications, told NPR that seven people had fallen into the river and were being searched for. He called the collision and collapse a "developing mass casualty event," The Associated Press reported.

Emergency personnel have been dispatched to the scene, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott added .

The ship that collided with the bridge was the Dali, a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship, U.S. Coast Guard public information officer Matthew West told NPR. The Singapore-flagged ship left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was heading to Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to MarineTraffic , a marine data platform.

Traffic was closed in both lanes after the collision and before the collapse, the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X.

The bridge is part of I-695, an arterial of Interstate 95, a major route running north-south along the Eastern seaboard of the U.S.

The 1.6-mile long bridge, named for the writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner," opened in 1977 and is located about 45 miles northeast of Washington, D.C.

We'll be back with more news tomorrow.

Officials say they are transitioning from search and rescue operation to a recovery operation.

US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police officials say that based on the frigid temperature of the water and the length of time that had elapsed since the bridge came down there was little if any chance that the six missing could be found alive.

Maryland's senator has praised the work of first responders, saying their heroism is a "ray of light on this dark day".

Emergency workers managed to stop traffic along the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the Dali container ship put out a mayday call.

Chris Van Hollen said their actions "saved lives" and he was "thankful for them".

A team of construction workers were repairing potholes along the bridge at the time it collapsed.

Eight people were initially reported missing, but two people were found, with one suffering serious injuries.

A short while ago, we heard from the executive vice president of construction company Brawner Builders, who confirmed the six workers still unaccounted for are presumed dead.

Six workers missing after the Baltimore bridge collapsed are presumed dead, the executive vice president of Brawner Builders has confirmed.

Jeffrey Pritzker told our US partner site NBC News that there was one survivor.

The company is not releasing names at this time.

Eight people, who were working on the bridge at the time it was struck by the Dali cargo ship, were initially reported missing.

Two of them were found, with one suffering serious injuries.

The other six have been missing for more than 12 hours.

Maryland's emergency management department has raised its state activation level.

It is now registered as 'full' - meaning an incident has occurred that may require significant resources.

As a result, the state's emergency operations centre has been "fully staffed".

The state's activation levels change based on a variety of factors.

The most influential factor is the occurrence of a significant incident, which is a term used to describe a single or multi-jurisdictional incident.

A construction worker has said he was told his missing colleagues were on a break when the Dali ship crashed into the Baltimore bridge.

Jesus Campos told the AP news agency some members of staff were sitting in their trucks when the bridge collapsed.

The Brawner Builders employee said he learned about the disaster from a co-worker and immediately worried about colleagues he knew were working on the bridge.

"When he told me that, they came to mind and I was praying to God that nothing had happened to them," he added.

"It is so hard for me to describe. I know that a month ago I was there, and I know what it feels like when the trailers pass.

"Imagine knowing that it is falling. It is so hard, one would not know what to do," he said.

One person involved in the Baltimore bridge collapse has been discharged from hospital, an official at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre has told AP.

Dr David Efron did not comment on the nature of the patient's injuries, and the hospital has not released their name.

Eight people were initially reported missing after the collapse.

Two people have been found - one was said to have serious injuries, while the other did not require hospital treatment.

Search and rescue operations are continuing this evening to find the six construction workers still missing.

The US transportation secretary has said the path to rebuilding the collapsed Baltimore bridge will not be quick or easy.

Pete Buttigieg described the bridge as "one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure".

"It has been part of the skyline for this region for longer than many of us have been alive," he said.

He has also taken the time to thank first responders and offered comfort to those "who woke up today to the news that no one wants to receive".

"This is an excruciating day for several families," he said.

Clearer satellite images have emerged of the moment the Dali container ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The vessel crashed into the structure after issuing a mayday call and losing power.

Earlier, Maryland governor Wes Moore said the ship was travelling at a speed of eight knots at the time it sent out its distress call.

Within minutes of departure on Tuesday, the faltering container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Here is a timeline of the Singapore-flagged vessel's collision, in local time (four hours behind British time).

1.04am: Loaded with shipping containers, Dali departs from Baltimore's port, heading to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

1.24am: Dali slowly approaches the Key Bridge, according to video captured by StreamTime Live.

1.24am and 33 seconds: The ship appears to suffer a total power failure as all its lights go out.

1.25am and 31 seconds: About a minute later, the ship's lights flicker back on. Black smoke starts rising from somewhere aboard the ship.

1.26am and 37 seconds: The ship's lights go dark again.

1.27am: Dali appears to be colliding with one of the Key Bridge's piers. The US Coast Guard receives the first report of a collision.

1.27am and 10 seconds: The ship's lights come back on.

1.28am and 48 seconds: The roadway of the Key Bridge begins collapsing.

1.29am: Most of the bridge's span has plunged beneath the water.

1.40am: Baltimore City Fire Department has dispatched rescue teams for the Patapsco River, with reports of multiple people in the water.

1.50am: The first fire unit arrives on the scene.
