1. Yarra Valley Wine and Wildlife Tour

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   10 hours |🍷  Book it!

Imagine starting your day surrounded by Australia’s iconic wildlife and ending it sipping some of the country’s finest wines.

You’ll feel like you’ve truly experienced the best of what Australia has to offer.

This full-day tour is a fantastic blend of Australia’s captivating wildlife and the exquisite wines of the Yarra Valley.

The day begins with a visit to Healesville Sanctuary, home to over 200 species of native animals.

Then, it’s off to the Yarra Valley for a delightful lunch at a vineyard, followed by wine tastings at Yering Station and De Bortoli Winery.

The tour wraps up with a cheese and wine pairing session that’s just the cherry on top.

Got a Quick tour of city getting out of town. Really enjoyed Healsville Sanctuary to get first intro to Aussie creatures. Dine and wine was wonderful intro to local treats. Wow, what a great first day here. peter (see more reviews)

I recommend this tour because it’s a well-rounded experience.

The Healesville Sanctuary visit adds an adventurous edge, making the following wine tastings even more rewarding.

Personally, I thought the De Bortoli Winery, with its cheese pairing, was a perfect way to end the day.

The Best Yarra Valley Wine Tours

For luxury wine tours, we had to go with the group that sit at TripAdvisor’s #1 spot for food and drink in the Yarra Valley, The Yarra Valley Touring Co. Everyone else raves about them, so they are a sure bet. Yarra Valley Winery Tours and Wombat Tours and Transfers are here too for their wealth of experience and local knowledge, and for their super-friendly tour guides.

Wild Wombat Winery Tours

best yarra valley wine tours

With so many amazing places to stop in for a drink and feed, it’s always good to get an expert to show you around their wine region. After a little digging around, we found Wombat Tours and Transfers, a tour company specializing in Yarra Valley wineries, restaurants and events’ transfers. Check out The Young Guns and Upstarts tour that runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and can pick your small group of 6 to 8 up from central Melbourne.

The tour experience takes in a select group of the Yarra Valley’s newest and most interesting winemakers. Stops include tastings at places like Soumah, Innocent Bystander, Payten and Jones, Warramunda and Medhurst. If you want to know what the bright future of wine in Australia will look like, then this tour is it.

For a slightly more traditional flavour, book a Yarra Valley Experiences Tour. While they will take you through some boutique cellar doors, this tour is geared to highlight the best the region has to offer. The day tours run from Monday to Sunday and only take small groups (up to 10). They also specialise in events’ transfers and can easily drop you at any accommodation spot you’ve booked.

Yarra Valley Touring Co

best yarra valley wine tours

The Yarra Valley Touring Co . is easily the best winery tour operator on this list. They offer a wide range of luxury winery tours all to suit the length of your holiday and/or budget. They don’t limit themselves to just wineries either, stopping in at distilleries for gin and breweries for cider and beer. Look at this list of tour packages:

Pick the Yarra Valley Wine, Bubbles and Gin Tour if you’re looking for a day trip (includes stops at Yering Station, cocktails at Napoleone, wine at Helen’s Hill).

Go for the Yarra Valley Romantic Winter getaway if it’s just the two of you (includes a night at Yering Gorge Cottages and a private grazing day tour).

The Big Weekend Package (with two nights in the Yarra Valley and stops at Yering Farm, Killara Estate and others).

And lastly, our pick, the Yarra Valley Decadent AF Tour that includes Champagne Breakfast at Domain Chandon, a three-course lunch at Domonique Portet Winery, stops at Innocent Bystander and Four Pillars Distillery, and tastings at Dame Nellie’s old pad, Coombe Yarra Valley.

If none of these work for you, they also do Designer Yarra Valley Wine Tours, which – take it from them – offers a “tailored Yarra Valley tour transport and accommodation package designed by wine lovers”.

Yarra Valley Winery Tours

best yarra valley wine tours

Yarra Valley Winery Tours do everything from exclusive tours, group tours, corporate group tours, events’ transfers and even brewery tours. Their customized Exclusive Tour takes you for the day to a mix of 4 or 5 iconic and boutique wineries, includes door-to-door service and a chance to visit the region’s other attractions. Their group bookings are not limited by size and can do anything from Ladies’ Days to corporate functions to Christmas parties. You can ask them to take you to the wineries you want to see, or let them take care of all that, stress-free.

Their level of experience means we had to get them on this list. Established in 1992 and based in the Yarra Valley, their superior local knowledge means that when they whisk you between the best tastings at the best Yarra Valley wineries, you’ll know they’re helping you to sample . . . well, the best. Whether it’s the secrets of the biggest names in Australian wine or the hidden gems with labels you won’t find outside of the cellar door, Yarra Valley Winery Tours will set you up for a classic experience you won’t soon forget.

Yarra Valley Wine Tours and Accommodation

If you’re looking for the best wine tours to the Yarra Valley from Melbourne, you’re in the right place.

We’ve made Melbourne our new home over the last five years and have been lucky enough to live here whilst also still having the excitement of feeling like tourists.

Healesville and the Yarra Valley are some of our favourite places in the state , and we’ve visited there on a number of occasions – on family trips, weekend breaks and Mrs Sabbatical Guide making the most of the wineries with her girls.

The Yarra Valley is one of the best wine regions in Australia, and being only an hour from the city makes it perfect for a tour from Melbourne.

In this post, we’re going to round-up some of the best tours you can book today to go and experience it for yourself. There are some crackers on this list (yes, all those five-star ratings really are accurate) so you’re spoilt for choice here.

OUR AUSTRALIA CREDENTIALS

1. the ultimate yarra valley food and wine tour.

⭐ 5 out of 5

We’re going to come out swinging here, with this incredible tour which has received nearly 300 reviews – all at 5 stars!

This is a full-day gourmet wine and food tour, which visits three of the best wineries in the Yarra Valley including a tour course gourmet lunch and a cheese and wine pairing session at De Bortoli Estate .

What made this tour stand out though was the fantastic guides, who consistently go above and beyond to meet the needs of their guests – with there even being an example of a driver taking some of the dusty back roads for a group who had come to shore from a cruise ship could see kangaroos in the wild!

2. Hop on Hop Off Bus

This is a flexible ‘choose your own adventure’ way to explore the wineries of the Yarra Valley without having to drive.

Picking up from the Hyatt in Melbourne CBD, Hop It Tours offer two routes through the Yarra Valley , each offering a mix of stops to choose. You can visit a maximum of four per day, with a timetable on the website showing you when pick ups and drops off are from each location.

hop it yarra valley winery tours green route and red route

The Green Route offers a more boutique route, visiting some of the smaller sellers and also stopping off at the delicious Yarra Valley Chocolatarie (get yourself some brownies, you won’t regret it!

The Red Route has the option to stop at some of the more famous wineries such as Innocent Bystander , Oakridge Wines or (Mrs SG’s personal favourite) Domaine Chandon – where they a sparkling orange bitters mix which reminds us both of Aperol Spritz.

Further Info : -> Full day tour -> Pickup from Grand Hyatt in Melbourne CBD -> No tastings or wineries including, you will need to pay for these (but the cost of the hop on hop off bus is much cheaper than other options on this list) -> Coolbox provided on the bus to store dairy or meat purchases you make on the day

3. Yarra Valley Wine, Brewery & Food Tour

This is another great option for a Yarra Valley wine tour, but this one adds in a couple of extras – a trip to Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and a stop off a Coldstream Brewery home of one of my favourite craft brews, their apple crumble cider.

brownies at yarra valley chocolaterie

This tour visits three wineries Helen & Joey Estate , Soumah and Yering Station , the last of which being the oldest winery in Victoria with the first vines being planted in 1838.

Further Info : -> Full day tour -> Pickup from St Paul’s Cathedral, opposite Flinders Street Station -> All cellar door wine tastings included -> Two course lunch (antipasto then mains) with a glass of wine included -> Tasting paddle of beer or cider at brewery included

????  Book your Yarra Valley Wine & Brewery Tour now!

4. Yarra Valley Wildlife and Wine Tour

It was hard for me to write about the Yarra Valley without including one of the most special places in the area, Healesville Sanctuary. Packed full of native wildlife, in a beautiful woodland setting, it’s a great way to see some of Australia’s unique fauna so close to Melbourne.

koala at healesville sanctuary

This is the longest Yarra Valley wine tour on the list at around 10 hours, but packs loads into the time.

Operated by Vinetrekker Tours you visit the Sanctuary first, before going to two of the area’s best wineries, Yering Station and De Bortoli. You’ll have lunch at Yering Station and a snack at De Bortoli where they’ll let you taste the best cheese that pair with the wines.

For something not purely wine focused, I’d highly recommend this tour, as Healesville Sanctuary is wonderful.

5. Wine, Gin & Beer Tour

The tour companies of Melbourne have managed to find every different variant of a wine tour to the Yarra Valley and here’s another.

Four Pillars Gin is famous in these parts, being stocked in nearly all the pubs around Melbourne, and their home is in Healesville . On this tour you get to visit their distillery for a paddle of four tasters, alongside winery stops at Helen & Joey Estate , Yering Station and Boat O’Craigo .

And if you hadn’t done enough mixing of boozes by this point, you’ll stop at Coldstream Brewery on the way back, truly a tour for everyone!

The reviews of this tour are glowing, with one person writing:

“Easily the best tour I’ve ever been on Sean was super funny and very informative We were running ahead of schedule and Sean was kind enough to even take us to the chocolate factory without any extra charge Highly highly recommend”

6. Yarra Valley Food & Wine Tour in a ’56 Chevrolet

And now for something completely different…

…ok, not completely, but you do get to cruise the Victorian countryside in a vintage car, so that’s pretty cool!

Pickup from outside Melbourne’s historic (and gorgeous) Princess Theatre , feels like an appropriate way to start a memorable day.

This tour takes a more scenic route than most before stopping off at the Melba Estate for complementary tea and scones before heading off to the wine region.

From here, much of the tour is customisable, you choose which wineries you want to visit and how much time you want to spend cruising through the hills of the Yarra Valley.

There is a scheduled stop off at the Yarra Valley Dairy for some refreshments before heading back into Melbourne (which was orignnally called Naarm ).

Further Info : -> 4.5 hour tour -> Pickup from outside Princess Theatre in Melbourne -> Morning tea and coffee not included -> Food and drinks and tasting fees not included

See What Our Guests Are Saying

Tripadvisor, june 2023.

Vinetrekker arranged an excellent tour of a mixture of established and newer wineries in the Yarra Valley. It was good to visit some hidden gems as well. Lunch at Yering Estate was excellent and the wine & cheese pairing at DeBortoli was a great ending to a memorable day. Safe & clean, organised, on time – no hesitation to recommend Vinetrekker.

This was a wonderful experience. I attended the tour as a solo guest and I felt very welcome and comfortable. Paul was a great host and ensured his guests comfort and needs were his highest priorities. Paul’s knowledge of the area and its history is exceptional, making the experience even more enjoyable. Not only was the wine tasting an amazing experience (with not one bad wine tasted) the food was to die for. From start to finish all of my expectations were exceeded and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Plentyoflight

Tripadvisor, may 2023.

Awesome tour. The company Vinetrekker was proactive and flexible with my pickup and drop off. The tour guide Shane was very friendly and knowledgeable about both the history of the area and wine. The other guests were also friendly which made the trip extra special. We visited a variety of traditional, modern, and edgy wineries for a wide variety of experiences. The landscapes were gorgeous and overall it was a fantastic way to spend a day outside Melbourne. Don’t miss it!

Thoroughly enjoyed Yarra Valley Wine Day Tour. Could not have picked a better tour and tour guide (Rob) to show case the beautiful Yarra Valley. Perfect combination of great wine and food. The tour lived up to its reputation of a high ranking experience. Outstanding value for money. So many wonderful and memorable experiences. Thank you.

My partner and I had the best time on Paul’s wine tour. Paul was a great host, not only did he drive us from vineyard to vineyard but he knew a lot about the wines, the areas we were in and the different types of wine each vineyard had to offer – to our taste.

The 5 vineyards were amazing and the knowledge from both the sommeliers, Paul (& to our luck a couple of vineyard owners!) made the whole experience even more amazing. Lunch was very good quality and the wine pairing made it even better.

TarraWarra Estate acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the original custodians of the lands and waters on which the Estate stands, and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

‘Tarrawarra’ is a Woiwurrung word that translates approximately as ‘slow moving water’ and is the name given to the area in which the Estate is located within the Yarra Valley.

Legend has it that the term ‘Tarrawarra’ refers to a bend in the nearby Birrarung (Yarra River), which courses from the Yarra Ranges through to Melbourne, flowing south of the Estates expansive grounds.

DISCOVER THE BEAUTIFUL MORNINGTON PENINSULA WINERIES

If you like wine, you’ve come to the right place. With Western Port Bay on one side and Port Phillip Bay on the other, the peninsula is a great place to make cool-climate wines, especially chardonnays and pinot noirs. It only takes an hour to drive from Melbourne to Mornington Peninsula.

There are more than 200 vineyards, 60 wineries, and at least 50 cellar doors on the Mornington Peninsula. Most are near Red Hill, Red Hill South, and Main Ridge, with smaller groups in Moorooduc and Tuerong in the north and Balnarring and Merricks near Western Port Bay.

Even though the area hasn’t been making wine as long as the Yarra Valley, it’s quickly becoming one of the best in Australia. There’s nothing more relaxing than having lunch at a winery and then walking through the grapevines while sipping a glass of wine.

ENJOY THE ELEGANT YARRA GLEN WINERIES

Some of Victoria’s best wines come from Yarra Glen Wineries. Yarra Glen Wineries are known for their great cellar door experiences and wine tours. You’d be crazy not to check out this pearl of paradise.

Different wineries have different tastes and experiences because they are at different altitudes. A glass of wine from two vineyards might taste the same as two glasses from vineyards thousands of miles apart. Because this region has a unique way of making wine, going there for a wine tour is a great way to spend a holiday.

The cool weather gives the wine a refreshing acidity, and the high-quality growth of vines that date back to the early 1800s makes the wine taste even better. Australia loves Yarra Glen wines because the soils and conditions in the area are so good. Most of Yarra Glen’s foundations are made of ancient Cambrian soils. These red soils are rich in calcium and made of greenstone, which is very good at holding water. The water stays in the ground all year, giving it to the vines and keeping the grapes plump and juicy. This lets the wine’s maturity and complexity shine through.

EXPERIENCE THE BEST WINERY TOURS
