I think there are certain towns across the Hudson Valley that get a bad "REP" sometimes. Over the years, I've heard some not-so-nice things about the Ulster County village of Ellenville. I won't go into what some say, instead, I thought we should focus on some of the reasons we love Ellenville !

Blueberry Festival in Ellenville, NY

According to many, if you love blueberries and have never had some from Ellenville, you are truly missing out on some of the sweetest, plumpest, and juiciest blueberries anywhere. The blueberries are so good that almost every year the village holds a blueberry festival . This year, Ellenville turns into the blueberry capital of the world on Saturday, August 13th, 2022, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The festival will take place on Canal Street and Liberty Square with live music, vendors, blueberry treats, and more.

Ellenville Wasn't Always Called Ellenville

Way back when, Ellenville went by a different name that thankfully was changed...LOL! According to Wikipedia , Ellenville was originally called "Socconessing" by the first people to call it home, the Esopus Munsee of the Lenni Lenape. "Socconessing" means "a muddy place where the water comes out" and Ellenville was called that until the Esopus were pushed out of the area by the early pioneers.

Maryann called us to let us know that Ellenville is home to a restaurant that everyone should try out at least once. Aroma Thyme restaurant located at 165 Canal St, Ellenville, was the first restaurant in the Hudson valley to be a Certified Green Restaurant© in upstate New York. According to their website , "we have one of the best-stocked bars with 250 craft beers, 250 fine wines & 250 boutique spirits. The restaurant is all about supporting local, but beyond that, they pride themselves in small independent brands from all over the globe."

Bouns Famous "FIRE" Fact

Ellenville was home to a famous fire back in 2019 when a fire broke out at 613 Automotive, a used car dealership, on South Main Street in Ellenville around 1 a.m. What made this fire famous was that it was being used as a set location for the HBO miniseries, "I Know This Much Is True," starring Mark Ruffalo. More than 50 autos were destroyed in the fire and thankfully nobody was injured.

About Terwilliger House

A late nineteenth century Queen Anne Victorian house

built in 1895 by George Deyo, Terwilliger House is the perfect setting for Ellenville Public Library & Museum’s local history collection. This outstanding collection includes artifacts from Ellenville Glass Works and stoneware from Ellenville Pottery, as well as products of industries that flourished in the heyday of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. Glass plate negatives, historic postcards, oral history CDs, and research files containing articles, ephemera and photographs make EPL&M’s museum holdings a community treasure trove.

Large fire erupts at former Nevele resort in Ellenville

Mar. 20—ELLENVILLE, N.Y. — A two-alarm fire was called in late Tuesday at the former Nevele resort on Arrowhead Road.

The fire at 11 Arrowhead Road in the Ellenville Fire District was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. Ellenville Fire Chief Jody Krom could not be immediately reached for comment. Wawarsing Fire Chief Ralph Davis said his department responded "on the back end" of the blaze.

State Police Trooper Steven Nevel said he was still gathering information on the fire and could not provide additional information.

A Facebook post by The Fire Wire of Ulster & Dutchess County page late Tuesday showed several photos of the fire at the property.

In September 2023, the property was sold for $5 million to 1100 Arrow LLC as part of plans by New York City-based developer Somerset Partners to demolish remnants of former Borscht Belt hotel in favor of a new facility with lodging, accompanied by a 126-unit housing development.

Developers on Sept. 29 closed on the purchase from Star Nevele Owner LLC, which had bought the two-parcel site totaling 497.5 acres in 2018 for $27.92 million.

Officials had been cautiously optimistic about the potential economic impact of the project since the application was filed in July 2021.

Under the plan, developers expect to construct a 68-room main lodge hotel, a 60-room condo hotel, and 10 rooms in ledge cottages. There would also be 46 units of single-family homes, 44 units of townhouses, and 36 units of multi-family village estates.

Developers in the state environmental quality review submission wrote that the new facility would not have the same visual impact highlighted by the 10-story building that got its name "Presidential Tower" after it was used by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 shortly after it was completed.

The elimination of "the unsightly 110-foot-tall Presidential tower" was part of the developer's plan. It was unclear early Tuesday whether the tower was damaged by the fire.

Among the plans is to have the former 18-hole golf course transformed "into a low maintenance landscape with focused native planting, areas of passive wilderness, (and) selective botanic display and cultivation gardens."

The site was last used in July 2009 as the Nevele Grande, a combination of the former Nevele and Fallsview hotels that had 100 employees when it closed. The owners had accumulated $342,687.22 in property tax debt that was ultimately paid three months later as well as more than $250,000 that was later paid to the Ellenville school district.

Community optimism rose in February 2012 when the court cleared the site for sale — for $24.58 million in April 2012 — with a sense of urgency brought on by having gaming company Navegante submit an ultimately unsuccessful application for casino gambling. That was followed by about four years of discussions involving Navegante developing the site as a sports complex, which died when the bank closed on the company's loan and sold it to Star Owner LLC.

U.N. Chief Calls Conditions in Gaza a ‘Moral Outrage’

In a visit to the Rafah border crossing, Secretary General António Guterres called for an immediate cease-fire and expressed solidarity with Palestinians in the territory.

António Guterres, the U.N. secretary general, reiterated his call on Saturday for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza, using a visit to a border crossing in Egypt to slam the “nonstop nightmare” Palestinians faced in the territory.

“I want Palestinians in Gaza to know: You are not alone,” Mr. Guterres said. “People around the world are outraged about the horrors we are all witnessing in real time. I carry the voices of the vast majority of the world: We have seen enough. We have heard enough.”

Mr. Guterres spoke to reporters from the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, one of the two main ground corridors being used to transport desperately needed humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. More than five months into Israel’s war against Hamas, Palestinians in Gaza are facing widespread hunger and deprivation despite a huge international relief effort.

For months, aid organizations have struggled to transport and distribute sufficient food and other supplies in Gaza, which faces a blockade that is jointly enforced by Egypt and Israel.

U.N. officials have said the obstacles include lengthy Israeli security inspections, attacks on aid convoys by desperate Palestinians and organized gangs, and roads badly damaged by months of airstrikes and fighting. Israel has blamed the delays on U.N. staffing and logistics and says it does not impose limits on the amount of aid that can enter Gaza.

The worsening conditions this week led the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a global authority that has classified food security crises for decades, to project that famine was “imminent” for the 300,000 Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza. Aid groups and U.N. officials have argued that it would be better for Israel to ease entry restrictions for trucks at established crossing points into the enclave and to do more to speed the delivery of goods inside Gaza.

“From this crossing, we see the heartbreak and heartlessness of it all: a long line of blocked red relief trucks on one side of the gates, the long shadow of starvation on the other,” Mr. Guterres said. “That is more than tragic — it is a moral outrage.”

Israel’s minister of foreign affairs, Israel Katz, responded to Mr. Guterres in a post on X , the site formerly known as Twitter. Mr. Katz criticized the secretary general for suggesting Israel was to blame for the humanitarian situation in Gaza without also condemning Hamas and the United Nations for their roles, and for doing so “without calling for the immediate, unconditional release of all Israeli hostages.”

The visit to the border by Mr. Guterres came a day after a draft U.N. Security Council resolution, backed by the United States and calling for an “immediate and sustained cease-fire in Gaza,” failed to pass when Russia, China and Algeria voted against it at a meeting of the council in New York.

The resolution, which included some of Washington’s strongest language since the start of the war, was criticized by those who opposed it and others for not demanding a permanent end to the war. Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, denounced the U.S.-backed measure before the vote, calling it a “hypocritical initiative” that did not do enough “to save the lives of Palestinians.”

In recent weeks, Israel and Hamas have held indirect talks — mediated by Qatar and Egypt — to try to reach a cease-fire deal. The proposal would also include the release of at least some of the more than 100 remaining hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, according to Israeli officials.

Israel started its campaign in Gaza after a surprise attack led by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed over 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, with more than 250 people taken hostage, according to Israeli officials. Five months later, more than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza health ministry, and wide areas of the enclave have been leveled.

Israeli leaders have vowed to send ground troops into Rafah, the city in southern Gaza where about a million Palestinians have sought refuge from the fighting. President Biden expressed “deep concerns” over a major Israeli operation in Rafah during a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel this week, according to the White House. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Friday that an assault on Rafah risked “further isolating Israel around the world.”

Israel says the operation is necessary to root out remaining Hamas fighters in the city. Mr. Netanyahu vowed on Friday that Israel would invade Rafah regardless of whether the United States backed the decision. “I hope we will do it with the support of the U.S.,” Mr. Netanyahu told Mr. Blinken, according to the Israeli prime minister’s office. “But if we must, we will do it alone.”

Mr. Netanyahu said Israel would seek to evacuate civilians from combat areas. But U.N. officials like Mr. Guterres have warned that the potential offensive was still likely to have dire consequences.

“Any further onslaught will make things even worse,” Mr. Guterres said. “Worse for Palestinian civilians, worse for the hostages and worse for all people of the region.”

An earlier version of this article misstated Algeria’s vote at the U.N. Security Council on Friday. Algeria voted against the resolution, but could not veto it as a nonpermanent member of the council.

It’s not always smooth sailing on the high seas.

According to Lucy Southerton , who has worked on a cruise ship for nearly a decade, there are some annoying things passengers do that irk crew members.

In a resurfaced video posted to YouTube, the 28-year-old from Birmingham, England, revealed a list of things that irritate employees on the ship.

The most popular complaint, she informed her more than 65,000 subscribers, was when people comment on workers’ English.

There is often a melting pot of people aboard cruise ships who come from around the globe, meaning those workers often speak another language in addition to English.

“It is scary going to work on a cruise ship where you have to speak English, which isn’t your first language,” she said in the clip.

“So it’s really, really crap when you have a passenger say something bad about your English,” she added.

In the same vein, Southerton said that the crew hates being culturally stereotyped, recalling an incident where a sailor asked her Colombian friend — who has “never, ever, ever ever touched drugs” — if she had ever “done cocaine” just because of where she was from.

“It’s just a bit insensitive,” she said, adding that it goes “both ways,” since Americans “get really upset” when they’re stereotyped as “dumb.”

Southerton also revealed that the crew also hates when travelers leave their cabins or the ship a mess, try to go into the restaurants, bars or shops just before closing and ignore the crew’s greetings, which she called “a little bit disrespectful.” Bragging about wealth, she added, is also a no-no.

Next, she said that it’s irritating when “passengers flirt with you and think they have a chance with you just because you are a crew member.” She explained that, while it’s part of the crew’s job to “be friendly,” it often gets misconstrued by travelers because “you’re a sexy crew member,” urging future passengers to consider that the crew might not want the attention.

Being treated like they are “not people” is another pet peeve of hers.

“I think with manners, the reason it annoys me so much and annoys crew members so much is because it doesn’t take anything to just say ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘hey, how you doing?'” she said.

In general, good manners go a long way, and not being polite to the crew is “the biggest mistake that people can make,” she told The Daily Star .

“You don’t know what you’re going to need and which crew member is going to be able to solve your issues and it has happened before where a passenger has been incredibly rude to a crew member that they have later needed during their cruise,” she said.

Yankees' visit to Mexico is a dream come true for many Mexican baseball fans

MEXICO CITY — For the New York Yankees, their first trip south of the border in more than 50 years probably means nothing beyond two exhibition games, but for many Mexican fans and the host team, Diablos Rojos, the visit of the most popular team in the country is a dream come true.

The Yankees played in Mexico in 1968 when they split the two-game exhibition series in the extinct Parque Delta.

Management from the Diablos Rojos said they hoped to get a chance to do it again after that, but it wasn’t until Omar Minaya was hired as senior adviser for baseball operations with the Yankees that the two-game exhibition series starting Sunday became a reality.

“Alfredo (Harp Helú, the Diablos owner) is close friends with Omar Minaya and that propelled everything,” said Othón Díaz, the team’s president. “We let them know how much it would mean for us to have them here again and they agreed.”

According to the Major League Baseball office in Mexico, the Yankees are the most popular team in Mexico, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox.

Díaz said hosting a MLB regular-season series between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants helped their chances because the Yankees’ front office was aware that Mexico City and the Diablos Rojos have a stadium that could host them.

The $160 million Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium opened in March 2019 and seats 20,000.

“The cornerstone was to have the stadium,” Diaz said. “You can see everything that has happened since we opened it: A young squad from the San Diego Padres came for the opening day of it and then everything slowed with the coronavirus pandemic, but last year we had a great series with Padres and Giants and now this.”

Even though the ballpark is small compared to MLB standards, the carnival-like atmosphere stands out. Last year, Padres players wore Mexican wrestling masks in the dugout and broke a Buzz Lightyear piñata after the games against the Giants.

“To have the opportunity to go there, to Mexico, and pitch there, I have a lot of family members there who will have the opportunity to see me pitch,” said Yankees reliever Victor Gonzalez, who is Mexican. “So to wear the Yankee pinstripes and be at home and pitch in front of my family, I think it’s going to be incredible for me.”

Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Volpe, Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera were among the players listed on the Yankees’ travel roster, which did not include any members of their projected starting rotation.

Tickets for the games sold out a month ago in less than an hour, and prices in the resale market range from $130 in the bleachers to $2,000 behind home plate.

“To me the price is reasonable; it’s not every day that you can watch your two favorite teams playing against each other,” said Armando Arce, a 45-year-businessman who purchased a $250 ticket for Sunday’s game.

Jets Schedule Pre-Draft Visit With Developmental Quarterback

The New York Jets path forward has grown less clear as it pertains to their plan with the 10th pick in April’s NFL Draft – for all the right reasons. Whether the Jets double down at receiver or offensive tackle, pivot with a trade , or take a position most mock drafts haven’t anticipated, it’s clear their options are open.

That includes, hypothetically, a quarterback. New York has spent most of the cycle hoping quarterbacks flood the first nine picks to best secure one of their preferred non-quarterbacks . Frankly, that hasn’t changed, but if general manager Joe Douglas fell in love with a passer, it’d be much more acceptable to make that move after their recent spending spree.

In all likelihood, if the Jets take a quarterback, it will be on Day 3.

Their due diligence has led them to schedule a visit with Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis, per Logan Robinson .

Travis, of course, was part of a Florida State team that went undefeated before Travis suffered a leg injury that ended his season. The Seminoles were then left out of the College Football Playoff and were dismantled in their bowl game against Georgia.

Travis was largely projected as a late-round prospect throughout the cycle, something his injury hasn’t seemed to change. As long as teams check off the medical box, his stock should remain stable.

The biggest factor drawing attention is his exceptional mobility that renders him a true dual-threat quarterback. His arm talent is passable, but limited, and he does enough between the ears to garner interest as a backup.

That doesn’t mean New York should be interested.

It’s hard to call any late-round pick a bad-process decision given the low stakes and unlikely hit rate. Travis wouldn’t necessarily be a bad pick. But the Jets would be better served to kick the can down the road on a young quarterback.

For one, the backup spot is already secured. The Tyord Taylor signing removed the urgency to draft a passer, and grooming a mediocre prospect to be a backup isn’t a fruitful endeavor. That (eventually) means handing the second-string reins to someone who hasn’t played significant time in the league. It is much easier to feel comfortable with a Taylor-type of a backup that has a defined floor higher than a given prospect.

Secondly, taking a quarterback destined to be inactive on game days as a rookie is not worthwhile. Travis isn’t a toolsy prospect with elite traits waiting to be unleashed. He’s an older prospect who doesn’t appear capable of being a game-breaking force. That’s fine – very few are – but the best-case scenario seems to be a cheaper alternative to Taylor. Further, the Jets are knee-deep in a competitive window . They’re effectively going all-in on the 2024 season.

While there’s room to make sustainable picks, such as a succession plan at tackle, New York still needs to find contributors in the NFL Draft. Whether that’s a rotational edge rusher, a stronger second-running back, or a slot receiver to push Xavier Gipson for snaps is yet to be seen, but Douglas shouldn’t be in a rush to “waste” selections on players who definitely won’t see playing time in 2024.

These reasons are underlined by the likelihood that any quarterback prospect becomes a strong starter. Unsurprisingly, this decreases as the draft goes on and is virtually non-existent in the later rounds. If the Jets are looking for a franchise quarterback, they are better off taking an early-round prospect when the time comes. Pinning their hopes on – and potentially giving starts to – a Day 3 quarterback can quickly become a losing proposition.

New York would be better off drafting a quarterback when the time comes for Aaron Rodgers and his backup to move on, spending draft capital – which the Jets lack a surplus of – on more likely contributors.

A total solar eclipse will pass through parts of the United States on Monday, April 8, meaning the shadow of the moon will plunge a narrow strip of land into darkness in the middle of the day.

Some tourist destinations, such as Niagara Falls , are going big for the eclipse. The state park is offering "free and open-to-the-public programming" leading up to April 8, the park said in a news release.

Another tourist destination offering a unique place to watch the eclipse is One World Observatory . Located on top of One World Trade Center in New York City, the observatory is offering the public a chance to witness the eclipse from the "highest observation deck in all the Western Hemisphere," according to a news release.

Tickets are $94 for adults, $92 for seniors and $88 for children ages 6 to 12. Children five years old and younger can enter for free. Tickets are on sale now on One World Observatory's website .

A ticket gets you entry to the observatory, one pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses, a voucher for one complimentary beverage of your choice, a commemorative One World Observatory pint glass, a commemorative souvenir photo and 10% off at the retail shop, according to the news release.

What is the path of totality for the total solar eclipse?

Before entering the U.S., the eclipse's path of totality will travel over a portion of northern Mexico. It will pass into Texas around 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to  NASA .

Several major cities will be in its  direct line of darkness , including Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis; Cleveland; Buffalo, New York; and Burlington Vermont. This animated map shows the path and local time the total eclipse will pass across the nation.

How do I watch the 2024 solar eclipse?

There's a few ways of watching the eclipse:

• Get the full experience in person : If you're in a narrow band of U.S. land that spans from Texas to Maine, you will see the moon block the sun and its shadow cast a night-like darkness over Earth for a few minutes. You'll be able to look up without eye protection and see the outline of the moon.
• Watch from outside the path of totality : Much of the U.S. will get a partial view of the eclipse that isn't nearly as impressive as being in the path of totality. Earth won't be plunged into darkness and you'll have to wear protective eyewear to see the moon partially block the sun.
• Watch a livestream : Check back on April 8 for a video feed from the path of totality. It's not the same as being there in person, but hey,  at least you won't have to sit in traffic .

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

Where is the best place to watch the eclipse?

Texas is considered the best state for eclipse viewing . There's a good chance the skies will be clear and it's location along the southern path of the eclipse means totality will last a little longer.

What is a solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears as the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," when observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, confuses animals – nocturnal creatures stir and bird and insects fall silent.
