The Scoop: What to Know About Road Scholar
This nonprofit tour company has an inspiring educational focus..
The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours
Part of what we do here at TourScoop is use our (human) travel expertise to vet tour companies so you have an easy way to get a bunch of trustworthy information all in one place. Today we’re digging into Road Scholar, a popular tour company that’s been around for nearly 50 years. Read on to find everything you need to know to confidently make the decision about whether it’s a good fit for you.
Road Scholar (previously known as Elderhostel) is a tour company with a difference: Since 1975 the company has been run as a nonprofit organization with an educational mission as its primary focus. That means a few things: since it’s a nonprofit, Road Scholar offers excellent value (tours aren’t priced for profit). I also like that it’s unusual among tour companies because it offers both financial aid and caregiver grants. And since it’s education-driven, the tour operator attracts a particularly curious and educated group of travelers, including many retired educators.
Road Scholar’s 4,000 offerings include small group tours, grandparent-grandchild trips, cruises, private jet adventures, and tours focused on passions including birding, food and drink, and history.
TourScoop Takeaways: Road Scholar
- Continents Covered: 7
- Tour Size Average: Road Scholar’s small group programs max out at 24 travelers, but the company also runs larger programs with hundreds of participants who are then broken into small groups for activities.
- Tour Types: Coach, ship, plane, train
How to Book
Road Scholar tours can be booked directly through Road Scholar ; here are all the ways you can contact the organization for information about trips.
Credibility Check
Road Scholar is a BBB accredited charity that meets the standards for charity accountability, and has a low complaint number and a high response-to-issues ratio. It has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Facebook . Tour-focused online travel agency TourStride past guests gives Road Scholar a 4.4 out of 5.
Tour Destinations
Road Scholar operates tours on seven continents and to nearly 100 countries. In the U.S., it offers itineraries to most states, and internationally, its most popular destinations include Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Italy.
Road Scholar offers hundreds of programs on a variety of topics, with thousands of departures annually. Since it’s a nonprofit organization with an educational mission, everything it does is about learning, and it weaves in educational visits, lectures, and events into every trip.
On the website, you can filter trips by hobbies or what you want to learn about, from Military History to Native American Studies, Birding, Pickleball, or another topic. You can also filter the course catalog by activity level, from “Easy Going” to “Outdoor: Challenging.”
Road Scholar also offers Adventures Afloat (cruises), skip-gen programs geared to grandparents and grandchildren traveling together, and virtual tours that range from one-hour lectures to multi-day online adventures.
Tour Guides
As an education-focused tour organization, Road Scholar refers to its group leaders and instructors as faculty . Faculty members–many of whom have been working with Road Scholar for a decade or more–are local experts with years of experience in travel and academics. Group leaders receive initial training and receive yearly professional development to ensure they’re at the top of their game.
In addition to faculty, tour participants meet a broad range of experts on tour, experts that range from shrimp boat captains to award-winning authors.
Inclusions/Extras
Road Scholar programs are all-inclusive and have no optional extras or hidden expenses. The price of a tour includes:
- Accommodations,
- Experienced Group Leader
- Expert-led lectures and field trips
- Most meals (some meals during free time not included)
- Gratuities throughout the program, including group leader gratuities
- Road Scholar Assurance Plan (24-hour assistance in the event of an emergency during a program and insurance for emergency medical evacuation)
Flights to and from the tour are not included in base program prices, but Road Scholar will book flights for participants traveling internationally. Flights booked through Road Scholar also include complimentary airport transfers.
Typical Travelers
If you don’t count kids in the mix on the Grandparent and Family programs, the average age of a Road Scholar participant is 72. But trips generally include a wide range of older travelers from people in their 50s through 90s. About 30% of participants are solo travelers, and of that 30% about 85% are women traveling on their own. Road Scholar trips are generally reported to be very welcoming to solo travelers.
Communication
Once you’ve booked a tour with Road Scholar, the company sends regular emails leading up to trip departures. You can also access your trip information online: once you’re enrolled in a program, all trip information is accessible via your online account.
Road Scholar’s U.S.-based contact center (800-454-5768) is open 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (ET), Monday through Friday. Monday is the contact center’s busiest day, so to avoid long wait times, call midweek or at the end of the week if you can). Road Scholar has callback feature, which allows you to save your place in the queue without having to wait on the phone–a representative calls you back as soon as it’s your turn in line.
Loyalty Program
Because Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization, discounts are not offered, including for repeat travelers. But the company is dedicated to making travel affordable for more travelers, and offers financial aid and caregiver grants .
Private Options
Groups made up of between 18 and 24 people can reserve private departures of existing itineraries with Road Scholar. If you organize a group of 20 or more, you can take advantage of group discounts or free travel for one person.
Sustainability Efforts
Road Scholar offsets some of the carbon emissions created through travel on its programs. It invests in projects including rainforest preservation in Brazil, methane gas recapture in Florida, and reforestation in Kenya. The company also tries to use sustainability certified hotels, locally owned services, and restaurants that serve locally sourced meals whenever possible.
Health and Safety Practices
Road Scholar has partners on the ground worldwide who monitor all areas visited by the company. If concerns arise, Road Scholar will find replacement content or cancel the program, depending on the severity and location of the issue.

Back-Roads Touring, rebranded as Blue-Roads in November 2018 for the North American market. They are dedicated to providing off the beaten path experiences for true cultural immersion .
What Makes Back-Roads (Blue-Roads) Stand Out?
- Slow travel
- Small group tours
- Expert guides
Blue-Roads strives to provide meaningful experiences that go deeper than the typical tourist routes to the heart of the destination. Travelers can expect to take their trip at their own pace so they can really see and experience all the destination has to offer. You’ll truly get the opportunity to talk with locals, taste traditional food and see the culture from an immersed point of view.
Group sizes stay small , no more than 18 travelers. These smaller groups allow for travelers to go on the paths less taken and have truly authentic experiences. Each group is led by a guide who has extensive local knowledge and connections. Touring with them is like visiting a good friend who can’t wait to show you the best hidden gems and introduce you to their culture and history .
Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Back-Roads?
- Cultural enthusiasts
- History buffs
Back-Roads travelers are passionate about experiencing new and exciting cultures while they travel. These travelers want to feed their curiosity of a destination by going to places less traveled, talking with locals and trying new things. Learn traditions of the local people, hear stories, learn recipes and make lifelong memories.
Traveling with Back-Roads includes a lot of sightseeing. Travelers who enjoy seeing temples, historical buildings as well as iconic natural landmarks . You don’t mind riding in a car to get to each new destination because sightseeing and learning insider knowledge is what you love to do.
The age range often skews a bit older - catering to active and adventurous 50+ travelers eager for a relaxing yet invigorating trip. However travelers anywhere from the mid 30s and above will enjoy traveling with them. Especially if you’re the type of traveler for whom the more party-focused companies that serve the 18-30 range are not appealing.
Top Destinations
Back-Roads offers itineraries around the world, though they are especially well known for UK and Europe travel . You can find trips throughout the UK, Ireland , Europe - including the Nordic and Baltic countries . They also provide Asia tours , primarily in the southeast to Thailand , Vietnam , and Cambodia .
Back-Roads Travel Style
Tours take the form of small groups , and the activities range from easy walks or hikes to visits to cultural and historical sites . They offer a few broad themes, such as battlefield tours, culinary tours , sailing tours, history tours, and nature tours .
Accommodations with Back-Roads are handpicked and generally in local and traditional hotels or guest houses. These usually have stairs, and are sometimes old buildings - you may encounter funky showers and not have the luxury of an elevator. They advise that you should be able to carry your luggage up and down flights of stairs.
Back-Roads is perfect for you if you don’t mind forgoing a few luxuries if it means having more character and local charm to your accommodations.
When commuting from place to place, travelers have multiple options. They can travel in their own vehicle or ride in a Back-Road’s luxury mini-coach, yacht, barge, train, gulet boat or internal flight.
Why Back-Roads?
The small group tour experience is at its best with companies like Back-Roads. They provide top notch customer service and guides, dedicated to showing you the best of what a country has to offer. For travelers who want a chance to experience a new place through local eyes, as well as learn the history and enjoy good food and company - within a wide age range - Back-Roads is a great choice.

During the hundreds of behind-the-scenes hours that go into crafting each itinerary, we find the right blend of activities to showcase the best of a region, creating a rich tapestry that you can explore as fully as you wish.
Having all been Trip Leaders, they've seen firsthand what guests find most meaningful. Tom Hale works closely with each trip designer, scrutinizing the details to ensure each Backroads experience meets our gold standard for trip design.
A travel experience is not like purchasing a new bike—you can't give it a test ride. You have to be able to trust what the people providing that experience tell you. Unfortunately, we've seen too many examples of companies quietly subcontracting all aspects of their trips to others and seriously limiting the amount of control they have over trip quality.

Available Amenities
Reclining seats, popular santa clara destinations.
Although one of Santa Clara’s biggest selling points is its proximity to San Francisco, the city has several attractions of its own that draw in visitors from across the Bay Area. Here are some of the most popular group-friendly destinations you can find in Santa Clara:
California’s Great America
This theme park features intense roller coasters like Flight Deck and the aptly named Demon as well as more family-friendly coasters like the Woodstock Express. Don’t worry if coasters aren’t your style, though—your youth group or scouting troop can spend the day on less intense rides like Thunder Raceway, the Celebration Swings, and Mass Effect: New Earth. If you’re visiting in summer, set aside time to race down the waterslides and tube rides at the Great America water park.
Address: 4701 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054
Bus parking: Parking for tour buses is free. The bus can drop you off at 4911 Great America Parkway before finding a spot in the theme park’s lot.
Triton Museum of Art
A cultural cornerstone of Santa Clara, the Triton Museum showcases contemporary artists, especially those with ties to the Bay Area. You may see exhibitions about the experience of African American, Japanese, or Mexican artists in Northern California or catch a selection of modern prints from the museum’s permanent collection. This museum is also free, so you don’t have to worry about how much it’ll cost to bring your entire group.
Address: 1505 Warburton Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95050
Bus parking: The Museum provides free parking in its lot.
Intel Museum
You can’t go to Silicon Valley without learning about computers, right? This intriguing museum shows how silicon chips are made and just how clean and automated Intel’s factories have to be to keep the chips working. But you won’t only learn about Intel’s products from a distance—you’ll also get to engage in interactive activities in the Learning Lab.
You can request a special field trip program for your girls’ coding group or a guided tour for your adult tour group by calling 408-765-5050 or emailing [email protected] . Adult groups can also take a self-guided tour with no reservation needed.
Address: 2200 Mission College Blvd, Santa Clara, CA 95054
Bus parking: The museum has designated parking, but if it fills up, your charter bus can drop you off and return to pick you up at the end of your visit.
Field Trips in the Bay Area
The Triton Museum of Art and the Intel Museum mentioned above both welcome field trips, but GOGO Charters can also help your class reach educational destinations throughout the Bay Area. If you want to visit the Computer History Museum in Mountain View or The Science Factory in San Jose, rent a coach with plush, reclining seats to get your class there more comfortably.
Going all the way to the Children’s Creativity Museum, Chinatown, or Alcatraz in San Francisco? You don’t want to deal with 50 bored children on an un-airconditioned school bus. Charter buses not only have climate control but also feature free WiFi and TVs with DVD players. Put on a movie, ask your kids to complete online activities, or just let them listen to music until you reach SF.
College Tours of Santa Clara University
GOGO Charters can easily transport your group of college-bound seniors to Santa Clara University, a Jesuit college in the center of the city. Don’t worry about your kids piling into carpools with each other and getting lost or becoming distracted while driving. A minibus will keep everyone together until you reach this beautiful campus that boasts a 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

You can now ride a railbike along a 17-mile track through scenic Ventura County

I never learned how to ride a bike.
Sure, I went through the motions of trying when I was 7 or 8 years old, but the skill never stuck. I suppose the balance needed to steer and maneuver a contraption with two wheels has always evaded me.
But you don’t need balance (or really any skills beyond sitting and wearing a helmet) to take a spin on t he Sunburst’s new 17-mile railbike route , which launched this month. Thursday through Sunday, riders can now book two-seat railbikes to explore the citrus and avocado groves on train tracks that run through the Santa Clara River Valley.
It costs $249 to book a two-seater bike for a three-and-a-half-hour ride, but local residents of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru are offered a discounted rate of $186. In Northern California, Mendocino Railway’s steep pricing was criticized back in 2020, when companies increased River Fox Train and Skunk Train tickets by nearly 500% to $250. But the worth of a railbike experience, I suppose, is in the eye of the beholder.

Searching for citrus in Santa Paula
To avoid rush hour traffic, I decided to book the Saturday afternoon ride for my partner and me. The Santa Clara River Valley is about 60 miles outside of Los Angeles, so we left the house before 11 a.m. and got back to L.A. around dusk.
The drive north is scenic, especially with all the greenery from this winter’s heavy rain. Once we arrived in Fillmore, we also spotted the only Jamba - Wingstop combo shop I have ever seen.
On the tracks of the train depot, we spotted seven go-kart-like apparatuses with big red wheels. Each railbike had two seatbelts, two bright green helmets and one shallow basket that could hold small bags and snacks throughout the ride.
Bike-adjacent inventions that roll atop train tracks have been known by many different names — handcar , draisine , kalamazoo and velocipede are just a few — since they first cropped up around the 1860s. And though these devices were originally made for railroad maintenance, different companies have found ways to turn railbikes into fun, outdoor adventures for train lovers.
A bucket list trip: Pedal through a Northern California forest on old railroad tracks
Skunk Train Railbikes, part of a nationwide trend, takes riders past redwoods and river waters in Mendocino County.
July 22, 2021
Robert Jason Pinoli, the president and CEO of Mendocino Railway , said the company’s electric railbikes — which function similarly to electric bikes — are currently patent pending. (Mendocino Railway operates the Sunburst and its railbikes.)
“We didn’t invent the railbike,” he said. “What we did invent, though, was the technology to propel these rail bikes beyond pedal power, the electric assist.”
As we settled into our seats, the guides explained how to use the bike’s handbrake, five gears and thumb throttle, which allows you to move without pedaling. The person on the right side of each bike is in charge of setting the bike’s pace and keeping a safe distance from the railbike just ahead of them, since the bikes move as one unit with a guide in the front and a guide at the back of the group.
“If you want to make the pedaling effortless, you can do it,” Pinoli said. “If you want to pedal away, you can turn it down to zero and pedal your heart out.”
As we buckled up and set out on our journey, we immediately encountered our first intersection. Pinoli shared that the guides are able to input a code that activates railroad crossing warning gates before the bikes approach each road. The tracks for the Sunburst’s route cross several active roads including CA-126, which made our line of railbikes quite the spectacle for drivers as they waited for our gates to retract.
17 miles in the great outdoors, no effort required
There are around 140,000 miles of train tracks in the United States alone — enough track to loop the circumference of Earth more than five times. Most of them are used for utilitarian purposes such as transporting coal, lumber or rocks, but some have been restored and repurposed for entertainment and enjoyment.
In this case, Mendocino Railway proposed a plan to restore the Santa Paula Branch Line, a 32-mile railway corridor that was built in 1887 and is now owned by the Ventura County Transportation Commission.
“This line was originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad to transport citrus out of the area,” Pinoli said. “We took over operation of the line in 2022, did a bunch of infrastructure work to the railroad, and we are now at the phase where we can actually start running railbikes over it.”
Mendocino Railway’s other tourism trains and railbikes include the popular Skunk Train in Fort Bragg and the monthly Boba Tea Train on the River Fox L ine in West Sacramento. Eventually, Pinoli said, this Sunburst Train route will include “excursion-based passenger trains” that center around food and beverages local to Ventura County.
“We’re surrounded by lemons, by oranges, and [want] to embrace the produce that’s in this area and incorporate that into the train,” Pinoli said. “So it wouldn’t be a stretch to see maybe orange- or lemon-flavored citrus drinks, like if you want a margarita on the train we can squeeze the fruit for you fresh. Maybe chips and guacamole.”
As we pedaled our way out of Santa Paula, the homes and Del Tacos began to disappear. After about 15 minutes we arrived at Prancer’s Farm , where we had just enough time to browse either the farm store or the petting zoo.
We chose petting goats and pigs over fresh strawberries, growing especially attached to a tiny goat my partner named Denzel (because Denzel Washington is also, famously, the G.O.A.T. ).
Once we left Prancer’s, the views were especially beautiful. Suddenly the landscape was split into four layers: grass, citrus trees, mountains and an enticingly cloud-speckled sky. From afar, we even got a glimpse of some large patches of bright orange flowers.
Throughout the ride we passed over small bridges, modest waterfalls and a few bumpy spots. Most of the ride, our bike was set to the third gear, which brought us to about the speed limit with little to no peddling.
“We are restricted to a speed of 15 miles per hour on this line,” Pinoli said. “But these bikes can go anywhere from 25 to 30 miles an hour.”
Tourism railbikes, similar to the ones that Mendocino Railway runs, seemed to find their stride in 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions forced many people outdoors.
“It gives people the ability to get outside and reconnect with friends,” Pinoli said. “During the throes of COVID, we couldn’t build these fast enough. They were in such huge demand.”
Take me home, country (rail)roads
The appeal of riding on a railbike is similar to driving a convertible — you get to feel the wind and sun on your face — but traveling on a train track also means that nobody has to steer. And you don’t have to be a train enthusiast or an avid biker to enjoy the experience.
When we arrived at the turnaround point, where we were supposed to stop and have a picnic lunch, it became clear that the route hadn’t totally been finished.
“Our picnic stop is abbreviated because there’s a bridge to the east that [was] washed out with the big storms in January, so we can’t cross over the river to get into Fillmore,” Pinoli said.
Once the storm damage is repaired, Pinoli said they’re hoping to pair with local vendors who could provide food at that halfway point. But because the picnics weren’t set up yet, I packed sandwiches (from a personal Culver City favorite, Monroe Place ) that we ate on the ride back.
Pinoli added that they’re hoping to expand railbike tours beyond four days a week and eventually start running food-and-beverage-centered passenger trains along with the railbikes and freight.
By the time we got back to Santa Paula, I was chilly enough that I was looking forward to getting back into my car. And even though I did minimal pedaling, I felt a sense of accomplishment when I returned my helmet to the seat.
Generally, I’m not particularly inclined to shell out more than $200 for an afternoon of biking, but I can understand the appeal for train lovers and people who enjoy marveling at the natural Southern California landscapes.
“Not to be cheesy, but I low-key get what they were talking about in ‘America the Beautiful,’” my partner said as we gazed at the mountains. I let them revel in that feeling for a minute before informing them that ‘America the Beautiful’ was actually inspired by Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Indiana Grown: Generations Pie Company
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every Saturday, WISH-TV highlights a local company together with our partners at Indiana Grown.
This week, Maria and Michael Johnson with Generations Pie Company joined News 8 at Daybreak.
Living up to its name, the company creates fresh, homemade pies using recipes that have been passed down through generations.
“In 2016, we started the pie company, and it was on the recommendations of family and friends,” Maria said. “I learned these (recipes) from generations before me. So, in order to honor them, we brought these recipes back to life.”
Maria tells News 8 more about her favorite pie to bake, which is her great-grandmother’s sweet potato pie. “This pie is over 100 years old, so it’s near and dear to my heart. (My great-grandmother), she taught me how to make these recipes.”
Michael then shows off some of the goodies they brought with them, including a sweet potato, lemon chess, and a bourbon chocolate pecan pie.
“We do over 25 – 30 different pie flavors,” he said. “And as the season goes on, we’ll start out June with cherry, then blueberry. In the summer season, (we’ll have) a Georgia peach, and then in the fall, people love the salted caramel apple.”
The bakery also creates other pastries, such as sweet breads, scones, and cobblers.

Customers out thousands of dollars, garage doors after Colorado Springs company files bankruptcy
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Gary Lamontagne paid American Overhead Door about $4,400 for two garage doors in December 2022. Nearly a year and a half later, he still doesn’t have those garage doors.
Cindi Hinds also paid the Colorado Springs company $4,300 as a 50% down deposit in August and her garage remains doorless. Lamontagne and Hinds are just one of dozens of homeowners across Colorado that paid American Overhead Door and never received the garage doors.
“We have a carport and everything is exposed to the elements,” Hinds said. “We have no security for our goods because we don’t have garage doors.”
Both homeowners told KRDO13 Investigates American Overhead Door gave excuse after excuse as to why the garage doors were taking longer than the four to six weeks they said. The company eventually gave the homeowners court documents, showing they had filed for bankruptcy.
American Overhead Door and its owner Gary Dejong filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, meaning the business can stay open and take on customers. It is an opportunity for companies to reorganize and move debt while still operating. However, customers claim filing for bankruptcy allows the company to avoid repaying and installing garages for dozens of homeowners, while still defrauding customers.
“If we do nothing else, we need the community to know what this guy is up to so that he doesn't do it to other people, because he's still taking money,” Hinds said. “He's still in business and he's still taking money.”
The bankruptcy filing lists more than 200 creditors, including more than 100 individuals. According to the court documents, some homeowners paid $2,000 for garage doors, while others paid nearly $15,000.
“When you take the $250,000 that all 108 of us gave him, and he is supposedly maybe going to pay it back over five years interest free, it's as if all 108 of us contributed money to give him a business loan to stay in business,” Hinds said. “It's wrong on so many levels.”
Homeowners said Dejong had no intention of providing garage doors and claim he is committing fraud.
“I feel like this person should be in jail,” Lamontagne said. “This is fraud. I don't know how many sleepless nights I've had just thinking about how frustrating it is.”
KRDO13 Investigates reached out to American Overhead Door and Dejong multiple times. They said they didn’t have a comment and to contact the company’s attorney. That attorney never responded to our requests for comment.
Elizabeth German, a bankruptcy attorney and partner with Robinson and Henry, said not everyone gets paid back in a bankruptcy filing, as there is no great way to equally protect both the debtor and creditors in bankruptcy court. While homeowners are claiming fraud, she said that’s difficult to prove in a chapter 11 bankruptcy.
“Those fraud standards are a little harder to pin down and prove,” she said. “You have to have some really finite, concrete evidence for those fraud standards. It's kind of almost a buyer beware mentality. It's always a possibility whenever you go anywhere that that business could shut down.”
However, she said customers could rely on Colorado’s Construction Trust Fund Act, which states a company that receives funds for work on a specific project can only use those monies for that project.
As required with the bankruptcy, Dejong filed a reorganization plan, which explains how he will repay debt. That plan said he would pay customers who didn’t receive a garage door $3,300 over five years at no interest. However, like their deposits and garage doors, homeowners don’t expect to see that money.
“Our bankruptcy courts have been written specifically, and they say to protect the honest but unfortunate debtor,” Hinds said. “This guy is not an honest but unfortunate debtor. He shouldn't have the protection of the bankruptcy courts.”
Homeowners are disputing the reorganization plan in bankruptcy court. However, the judge said they need an attorney. Hinds said they can’t find one because this case likely won’t have any payout.
“The rest of our money is just going to basically go bye bye,” Hinds said. “They are going to continue to stay in business and we are out of luck.”

United Airlines says federal regulators will increase oversight of the company following issues
Mar 22, 2024, 7:22 PM
BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
CHICAGO (AP) — Federal regulators are increasing their oversight of United Airlines, the company announced Friday, following a series of recent issues including a piece of the outer panel falling off one jet and another suffering an engine fire on takeoff.
United’s vice president of corporate safety, Sasha Johnson, said the Federal Aviation Administration will examine “multiple areas of our operation” to ensure safety compliance.
“Over the next several weeks, we will begin to see more of an FAA presence in our operation as they begin to review some of our work processes, manuals and facilities,” she said in a note to employees. “We welcome their engagement and are very open to hear from them about what they find and their perspective on things we may need to change to make us even safer.”
Johnson said the FAA will pause certification activities but did not provide details.
The agency said it “routinely monitors all aspects of an airline’s operation” and did not describe any additional steps it is taking in United’s case.
In a statement, an agency spokesperson said FAA oversight “focuses on an airline’s compliance with applicable regulations; ability to identify hazards, assess and mitigate risk; and effectively manage safety.”
Earlier this week, United CEO Scott Kirby tried to reassure customers that the airline is safe, saying that the recent issues were unrelated to each other.
Kirby said the airline was already planning an extra day of training for pilots starting in May and making changes in training curriculum for newly hired mechanics and that it would consider additional changes.
Among the most recent issues, a chunk of outer aluminum skin was discovered to have fallen off the belly of a United Boeing 737 after it landed in Oregon. Earlier this month, a United jet suffered an engine fire during takeoff from Houston, and a tire fell off another United jet as it left San Francisco.
Other problems included a hydraulic leak and a plane veering off a taxiway and getting stuck in grass.
United is the nation’s second-largest airline by revenue, behind Delta Air Lines.
