It was re-constructed by the grandfather of Shivaji (Maloji Bhosale) in the 16th century and later again by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. The temple is made up of red-colored stones and occupies an area of 44,400 square feet. It is not just divine but has a unique architectural style that will leave you captivated.

After visiting this temple, head towards Nashik, an ancient city in Maharashtra. The city is renowned for its links to the “Ramayana”. Nashik was earlier known as 'Panchavati' before the Ramayana era and is nestled on the bank of the Godavari River, denoting a great mythological, traditional, cultural, and social significance.

The pious Trimbakeshwar Temple is situated around 28 km from Nashik city. The third Peshwa Balaji Bajirao constructed the temple on the position of an ancient temple.

The Jyotirlinga here has its three appearances embracing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rudra. The significance of this temple is enhanced as the Godavari begins from the Brahmagiri hills in this town, and it is believed that it is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, known as a place of Tri-Sandhya Gayatri.

According to Hindu mythology, those who visit Trimbakeshwar attain salvation or Moksha (it refers to freedom from the cycle of death and rebirth). Due to its utmost religious importance, this holy destination, a large number of devotees visit this temple every year.

The temple is located on the ancient Triveni Sangam, the confluence point of three rivers - Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati.

The history of this pious temple is very tragic. It is said that the temple was looted and destroyed seventeen times by rulers like Mahmud Ghazni, Alauddin Khilji, and Aurangzeb.

At present, the construction of this temple is in the Chalukya style of architecture. The temple comprises impressive architecture with elaborate carvings, silver doors, an important Nandi idol, and the central Shiva linga. Seek the blessing of Lord Shiva and attend the evening aarti. Somnath temple is a major pilgrimage and tourist spot in Gujarat.

After visiting the holy temple, return to Porbandar. Overnight stay at the hotel in Porbandar.

On day 7th, enjoy your breakfast and check out from your respective hotel. You will be driven to Porbandar airport to catch a flight for Indore via Mumbai. On your arrival in Indore, start your drive towards Ujjain. An ancient city is settled on the bank of the Kshipra River in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh; Ujjain is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination. It is renowned for the centuries-old Mahakaleshwar Temple, a towering construction with an ornate roof.

Somnath Jyotirlinga

Somnath Jyotirlinga is considered to be the first Jyotirlinga. It's located on the western seacoast of Gujarat, in Prabhas Patan in Kathiawad District. This sanctum is one of the oldest and most visited passage spots in India. Somnath's name translates to Lord of Soma, while Soma means The Moon God.

It is well known that this mandir has an Eternal Shrine.  It was destroyed for nearly 16 times by raiders but was always rebuilt and noway lost its beauty. The present jyotirlinga has the Chalukya style armature and the chops of Sompura Salats.

Best Time to visit

The Best time for visiting the Somnath Jyotirlinga is Downtime Season. The layoffs season in Gujarat covers the month of October to February . The climate in this season stays cool and is substantially recommended for sight- seeing. The temperature remains between 10 to 32- degree centigrades. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Commonly referred to be The Kailash of the South .  On the banks of the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh's Srisailam, you may find this temple. 

The words Mallika, which means Goddess Parvati , and Arjuna, which means Lord Shiva , are combined to form the name Mallikarjuna. A tale from the Shiv Puranas says that when Kartikeya returned to Kailash, after taking around of the earth, Narada Muni informed him about Ganesha’s marriage before him. Kartikeya, enraged, descended to Kraunch Mountain.

He was comforted by all the gods, including Shiv Parvati, but he rejected them all. Shiv and Parvati stayed on the mountain after seeing their kid in this condition and took the appearance of a Jyotirlinga.

Jathra Mahotsavam held during the month of March is the most popular magnet of Mallikarjuna Temple.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

Positioned in the literal megacity of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on the banks of River Kshipra, the Mahakaleshwar Temple , piecemeal from being the home to one of the twelve holy Jyotirlingas, is one of India's greatest Tantra temples..

There are numerous mythological stories behind the Mahakaleshwar Temple but, the one that's utmost constantly heard is that Lord Shiva appeared in Ujjain from the ground to overpower a demon called Dushana whose tortures on the people and Brahmins of the Ujjain megacity had crossed all the limits.

After killing the demon, Lord Shiva took the form of Jyotirlinga and since also, he has been abiding in this holy megacity, raining his holy blessings.

This season spans the months of October through March .  The temperature stays at 20 degrees . The rainfall remains affable and is good for the pilgrims. Since summertime temperatures can reach up to 45 degrees centigrade, it is advised to avoid them.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is a sacred passage spot for devotees of Lord Shiva and the fourth Jyotirlinga. It's located on an islet Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh.

There are different stories related to this temple and the one from Shiva Purana says that Narada had formerly visited mountain Vindhya. While Vindhya worshipped Narada, he also said I’m full of all the desirable objects that one can suppose of since he was slightly proud.

As all the Gods are constantly present on Mount Sumeru, Narada said, it is superior to Vindhya.  So, Vindhya came the equal height of Sumeru and supplicated to Lord Shiva for six months.

After all these prayers, Lord Shiva appeared, and Vindhya Mountain asked for Shiva to be present there so he also gets equal significance as Mount Sumeru. The linga worshipped by Vindhya is known as Omkara and therefore, the Omkareshwar temple came into actuality. The Omkareshwar Shivling is beautifully set in the temple and has great significance spiritually.

Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga

One of the most popular Jyotirlingas is located in Deoghar and is called Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, Baidyanath Jyotirlinga , or Baijnath Jyotirlinga. Legends say that Ravana was planning, and he asked Shiva to make Sri Lanka unstoppable.

He also tried to extract Mount Kailas, but he failed as Lord Shiva crushed it. Further, Ravana asked for penance, and he was given the Jyotirlingas on the condition that they would remain confirmed to the spot ever if placed on the ground.

As Ravana headed towards Sri Lanka, Lord Varuna entered his body and had a critical need to relieve himself, so Lord Vishnu came as a lad to hold the lingam for time being. The lingam was embedded permanently in the ground because Vishnu kept it there. 

Ravana cut off nine of his heads as a tone- discipline and Lord Shiva joined the heads to the body just like a Vaidya (croaker), hence, the place came to be known as Vaidyanath.

• Road- There are direct road routes that connects the temple to the major metropolises. Several motorcars connect from Aurangabad, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and other near metropolises.
• Train- The nearest train station is Parli. It's 2 km from the Parli Vaijnath Jyotirlinga. Then are direct trains that operate from Secunderabad, Kakinada, Manmad, Vishakapatnam and Bangalore.
• Air- To get to Parli Vaijnath by air, there are no direct flights. The nearest field is in Nanded, 105 km from the Parli Vaijnath temple. You can also take a flight to Chikkalthana Airport which is 174kms down.

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga

The Bhimashankar Temple is situated in Pune, Maharashtra, in the Sahyadri Hills' Ghat Region. It's also the source of the Bhima River. According to the Hindu Puranas, Lord Shiva took a rudra icon to kill a wicked demon called Tripurasura, who was in rage of destroying the three loks Heaven, Hell and Nether world (Patal).

After killing the demon, the Lord sat down on the Sahyadri Mountains to take some rest. It's also when the sweat from his body started flowing and turned into the Bhima River. Lord Shiva, as Jyotirlinga, resided on these mountains at the Devas' request.

How was it formed: It was first built by the Moon God (Lord Som) in the Satya Yuga to pray to Lord Shiva to get rid of the curse given by his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati, so that he could regain his luster. This stunning temple was initially made entirely out of gold. Its Baan Stambh is a completely straight line from the place of origin to Antarctica.

It is the eternal shrine, literally. It comes from a strategic past and has been restored despite numerous loots and devastations. An 11th-century traveler from Arab, Al-Biruni described Somnath gloriously in his travelogue regarding its enormous wealth — there were 300 musicians, 500 performers, and 300 barbers. Lured by the facts, Mahmud of Ghazni raided and stripped the temple of its wealth. Following this, several invaders demolished the shrine over time. Interestingly, the temple still retains its charm and elegance.

Another highly venerated Hindu temple in India, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, is located on an island shaped like ‘Om’ at the Narmada River. This is one of the rare jyotirlingas that is believed to be split between two temples: Omkareshwar (Lord of Om Sound) and Amareshwar (Lord of Immortals). It is a giant temple with a grand Sabha Mandap (meeting or prayer hall), a shrine for Parvati and Ganpati, and engraved dioramas.

How was it formed: Among the many legends, the Hindu scriptures say that once in a war between the Devas (divine beings) and Danavas (demons), the Devas lost and prayed to Lord Shiva. It was then that He appeared in the form of Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga. There is another story about the Vindhya Mountains that did extreme tapasya to Lord Shiva by creating a lingam made of sand and clay. Lord Shiva blessed him.

5. Baidyanath Jyotirlinga in Deoghar, Jharkhand

Also called Baba Dham, this is one of the popular 12 jyotirlingas in India. Its pyramid-shaped dome gleams with three gilded vessels, presented by the Maharaja of Giddhaur, Raja Puran Singh. Once you visit here, you can also bow down in 21 other temples, a few of which are devoted to Lord Brahma, Lord Hanuman, Goddess Saraswati, and Goddess Kali. Other eloquent features of the jyotirlinga include a giant Nandi sitting in front of Shiva and five trident-shaped knives.

How was it formed: In Hindu scriptures, the evil King of Lanka, Ravana, performed penance to please Lord Shiva. He sacrificed his ten heads, one after another, to the Lord. Seeing this, Shiva appeared and revived him. Just like a vaidya (doctor), he joined the heads to the body. On asking to take the Linga with him to Lanka, Shiva told Ravan that he could, but on his way, if he kept the Linga anywhere on the ground, it would be established there. Ravana couldn’t carry the Linga throughout and had to place it on Earth; hence, this jyotirlinga came into existence.

Annually, millions of devotees join in the Kanwar Yatra, which is a holy proceeding to reach the sacred site of Sultanganj and collect the waters of the Ganges back to the Jyotirlinga.

6. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra

One of the most sacred abodes of Shiva, Bhimashankar, is located in the Sahyadri hills of Pune by the banks of the Bhima River. The temple was originally built in the 12th century with features that are still present, like the shikhara (tower) and garbhagriha (sanctum). While the significant architectural influence is from the Indo-Aryan style, there is also a bold impression of Gujarat and Rajasthan. How was it formed: According to Hindu scriptures, there was a war between Lord Shiva and the demon Tripurasura. It was a world-shaking tussle where the devil lost. As Lord Shiva rested post-war, the sweat from his body flew down, creating the Bhima/Chandrabhaga River.

7. Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

One of the 12 jyotirlingas in India, Ramanathaswamy is beautifully perched on the Rameshwaram Island of Tamil Nadu. South Indian temples have a higher reverence when it comes to unique architecture. How was it formed: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the origin story goes back to the world-famous Ramayana tale. It is said that Lord Rama wanted to pray to Lord Shiva before crossing the river to conquer the devil, King Ravana. The complex has a colossal statue of Lord Shiva measuring 25 meters in height that will make you surrender to greater forces.

How was it formed: A demon couple, yet ardent followers of Goddess Parvati, Daruka and Daruki, held captive Supriya. Supriya, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva, started reciting the Shiva hymns in prison. Angered by this action, Daruka came to kill Supriya but was interrupted by the giant vision of Shiva. It was here that He appeared as Jyotirlinga.

Also known as the Nagnath temple, this is the shrine of the God of Nagas (snakes), and anyone who prays to Lord Shiva here gets freedom from poison and other toxins in the world. Five-day large proceedings take place in Mahashivratri, where the devotees are drenched in spirituality and rituals.

9. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Sited 33 kilometers west of Nashik, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 jyotirlingas, overlooking the mountain named Brahmagiri. The temple has a holy pond, or Kushavarta, the source of the Godavari River in South India, and is the only jyotirlinga that worships Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.

How was it formed: According to scriptures, the Brahmagiri Hills were once threatened by famine, while the home of Gautama Rishi was blessed with food grains. The other sages envied him and sent a cow to his field. Gautama Rishi frightened her away, but the cow died. Gautama worshipped Lord Shiva to release Ganga and get rid of this sin. Lord Shiva granted the wish and also manifested himself. The temple that you see today was constructed by a Marathi king, Peshwa Balaji Bajirao III. Its construction took an exhausting 31 years.

The famous Kumbh Mela festival occurs once every 12 years and draws millions of pilgrims who want to soak in the exuberance and power of faith.

This is the smallest jyotirlinga, sprawling over 44,400 square feet and enveloped in red stones. People are left gawking at the five-layered, tall shikhara.

How was it formed: One of the sagas behind the temple is about a devotee named Kusum who prayed the lingam daily by immersing herself in water. Jealous of her devotion, her husband’s first wife killed her son. But Kusum continued praying, and seeing her undisputed worship, Lord Shiva descended to this place and gave life to her son.

Through this article will be providing Best Route to cover all 12 Jyotirlinga along with a small introduction, however will also be publishing individual articles for each Jyotirlinga with detail Plan &  Itineraries as well as guide. The list given below is a circular route, means if you start from a place coming back ending at that place. ‘Radiant sign of Almighty’, is what represent a Jyotirlinga.

Though I started by Jyotirlinga Darshan from Nashik , however while preparing this article was traveling around Hyderabad, hence starting the list from Mallikarjun jyotirlinga . Though my 12 Jyotirlinga Bike ride was includes Chardham as well hence my route was little different. But if one want to do only 12 Jyotirlinga Darshan , this route is best suitable for a Road Trips .

7- Somnath Jyotirlinga: Considered to be one of first Jyotirlinga, Historically this temple was destroyed and rebuild multiple times. Located in Kathiawad district of Gujarat also known as Prabhas Kshetra .

8-  Nageshvara ( Nageswar) Jyotirlinga: The Nagnath Temple located coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat.  There is a special believe about this jyotirlinga temple is, its protects from poisons and provides liberation from all forms of poisons.

• The term Jyotirlinga is a Sanskrit compound of Jyotis (radiance and linga (sign).
• As per the purest Shiva Purana, there are 64 Jyotirlinga shrines in India. Amongst them, 12 are considered the most sacred, called “Maha Jyotirlingam” .
• It is firmly believed that the 12 Jyortilingas are self-manifested ; the supreme deity manifested himself in these places for his devotees.
• According to some iterations, the person who visits all the majestic and divine shrines will attain “Moksha” (Salvation).
• Jyotirlinga is also known as “Dwadash Jyotirlingas”.

The Tale behind Jyotirlinga  

Quoting the sacred Shiva Purana, the legend of the “Jyotirlinga” commences with a debate proceeding amidst Lord Vishu (God of Preservation) and Lord Brahma (God of Creation ) over their supremacy.

• To settle down and determine who is the supreme authority, Lord Shiva pierced down the three worlds and appeared in the form of light profoundly known as Jyotirlinga .
• As per some iterations, both authorities were tasked to find the end of the light in either direction.
• To accomplish the task Vishu took his “Varaha” avatar whereas Brahma rode his Hamsa (swan) to carry on the task .
• Producing a Ketaki Flower as proof, Lord Brahma lied and claimed that he had discovered the end of the light.
• On the other hand, Lord Vishu admitted that he failed to find the end of the light on his quest.
• The lie and dishonesty of Lord Brahma provoked Lord Shiva and he cursed that being the creator deity he will not be worshipped .
• For his integrity, the Preserver deity was blessed with the boon that he will be worshipped eternally.

Somnath Jyotirlinga – Saurashtra, Gujarat

Somnath Jyotirlinga situated in Veraval in (Prabhas Kshetra) Kathiawad district Gujarat is reckoned one of the first 12 Jyotirlingas as well as the most visited pilgrimage sites in the country.

• It is believed that the supreme Lord Shiva resides in the shrine as the blazing column of light.

• As per the holy Shiva Purana, Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters and the Moon was married to all of them but amongst them, he is in awe of the Rohini the most. 
• Acknowledging Moon’s behavior towards the rest of his daughters, Daksha Prajapati cursed Moon that he will lose all his radiance.
• After that, the distressed Moon accompanied by Rohini reached Somanth and worshipped the “Sparsa Lingam” after being pleased by the devotion of both,  Lord Shiva blessed him with all his lost radiance.
• Later, at the request of the moon, Lord Shiva held the name “Somchandra” and ensured there for eternally.

• Another reason why Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga carries so much spiritual significance is that it is one of the seven “Mukti-Sthal” . 
• It is believed that the sacred place liberates humans and blesses good health.

The Legend Behind Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

• Quoting the tale from Shiva Purana, a five-year-old boy named “ Shrikar” got engrossed by seeing the devotion of Chandrasena (king of Ujjain) and desired to accompany the king.
• However, the boy was forced by the guards to head to the river Kshipra and pray.
• Surprisingly, Shrikar came to know that the rivals of Ujjain (King Ripudamana and King Shinghaditya) planned to strike Ujjain.
• After that, Shrikar started praying immediately, and the news got widespread and heard by Vridihi (priest) who also began praying.
• After hearing the plight of devotees, Lord Shiva appeared in the Mahakaal form and eliminated the enemies.
• Later on, Shrikar and Vridhi requested Lord Shiva to reside in Ujjain and he agreed and resided in the form of light to protect the city and its people.

The First Tale

• According to the Hindu scriptures, once there was a great lethal war going on between Sur and Asurs (Gods and Demons) where Asurs were weighing over the Surs and losing the battle.
• After seeing the fatal destruction, the god pleaded to Lord Shiva and the supreme Lord incarnated in the form of “Omkareshwar” and exterminated the vermin.

The Second Tale

• The other legend begins with Vindhya (Controller of Vindhyachal Mountain Range) and his immense devotion towards the almighty Shiva.
• He formed a sacred diagram and Lingam of the Sand and Clay. Impressed by the devoutness, Mahadev (Lord Shiva) appeared in two forms;

He took the help of Lord Vishnu, who transformed himself into a mountain (Meru) and a bowstring (Vasuki). Lord Shiva then shot his arrow from Meru and Vasuki and destroyed Tripura with a single shot. The impact of the arrow was so immense that it created a huge crater on the earth, where Bhimashankar Temple now stands.

The temple was first built by King Karna of the Chalukya dynasty in the 6th century CE. It was later renovated and expanded by various rulers and dynasties over the centuries, such as the Rashtrakutas, the Yadavas, the Marathas, and the Peshwas. The temple also received patronage from several saints and devotees, such as Nana Fadnavis, Raghunath Peshwa, Jangli Maharaj, and Sai Baba of Shirdi. The temple has witnessed many historical events and battles, such as the invasion of Malik Kafur in 1312 CE, the revolt of Shivaji Maharaj against Aurangzeb in 1674 CE, and the Anglo-Maratha War in 1818 CE.
