P&O Aurora GRAND CRUISE R301 R401 R501

If P&O is your tipple then there are three choices to leer you into a longer cruise. They repeat each year. The Ventura is the entry-level at only 35 nights. Once hooked, the Aurora offers the Grand Cruise of 65 nights. The whopper is the World Cruise at 99 nights. When the Aurora leaves Southampton on January the 3rd, the Arcadia leaves Jan 6th, and they swap year on year. We have been on all versions so can share some tips and films as port guides.

Here is where we list the chat groups for the AURORA Grand Cruise……..

The Aurora had the route that attracted nature lovers in 2023. Along with the long lens cameras, there was also a good team of those who travel with their bicycles. Comradeship is the keyword on this ship which is likely to be full at just under 1800 guests. For me, it is one of the most stable ships at sea. Please post the pictures on the Aurora chat group. With prices that start at under £100 a day, it is not surprising many miss the whole UK winter, huge fuel bills, and have their food not just covered but delivered.

The 2023 R301 cruise got off to a slow start with some not having either the Yellow Fever jab, the yellow card, or an exemption which can be granted to those over 60 and some with other conditions. Our very modern COVID-like digital version and our full NHS record of every vaccine we have had in the last 40 years was questioned for some time and had to be backed by us calling the doctor. Some were not let on and had to join later in Tenerife. They may have been the winners this year given the state of the Bay of Biscay in January.

I will be posting all the films and will add links to this blog over the coming week and they will feature in our South American section. It will be useful because you should be aware of queue times, standing, and extra payments. Although there is a local law on older people queuing and in many places they will ask older people to sit down while waiting, the price reduction for older guests does not work at the Jesus statue, which is for locals only. We managed to obtain the over-65 reduction at Sugar Loaf which was a better moralistic gesture. The views were better at Sugar Loaf and the sugar nuts were the best I have had.

2023 Grand Cruise – We visited the changed port of Recife for which we suggest you might consider a beach tour if going there – see our film. We then went to the wonderful Cabo Frio. It was Jean’s un-numbered birthday, so we went for a real Brazilian lunch and had the best food of the trip. It was a national holiday, and the main beach was crowded in a way I don’t think anyone will be able to comprehend without seeing the film. Rio de Janeiro was a treat, and there is more to see than we managed on our exhaustive two days. I hope the film about Rio will help you. Finally, I learned from Classical guitarist Declan that our next and final port, Montevideo in Uruguay, was the origin of the South American Tango which many attribute to being the Argentinian Tango… but then history used to say that Columbus discovered America.

p&o cruise 401

Talking of slavery, this coast, and Brazil were hugely involved in the slave trade and the African influence is colourful. It outshines the colonial influence. A note to all, even if after a warning from the ship’s port guide person you insist on wearing even the smallest jewellery and a few rings, and in taking a bag, do not be surprised when many helpful locals speak with you to warn you to hide them or carry the bag around your neck. Jean was stopped many times and as little English is spoken it took us a while to comprehend just how concerned they were for us.

The ship was having the show Astonishing installed and a new dance group, which meant we as speakers had to go into the cinema and even performing two shows a day, we had problems accommodating everyone, so sorry we could not be in the theatre. Thank you to all those of you who were reading my book Cruise Ship Heist, we had some great chats.

About Us

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson.  Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.

Review for a Caribbean - All Cruise on Britannia

p&o cruise 401

Sadly, I'm of the same opinion of other prople on board Very disappointed with this Carabbean trip. Ports over crowded by too many ships. However, l must say, the staff were excellent. Our cabin steward did his best to keep our tardy cabin clean everyday. The shower head was broken which took two attempts at repair; there was mould in the shower corners; the toilet seat was disgusting: ... Read More

I travelled as a solo woman in her mid 40’s. I chose this cruise as it wasn’t much more expensive than booking a land based holiday, the comparing solo supplements etc. I flew in on the Saturday with Tui, but it was on an airplane ran by Titan airways, so P&O contracted to TUI who contracted out again to Titan. Made the thank you announcements quite long! Flight was comfortable and plane ... Read More

Review for a Caribbean - All Cruise on Arvia

We have done 5 Caribbean cruises with P&O and this was the least satisfactory. Arvia is a huge ship and seems to have taken P&O distinctly downmarket compared to what we are used to. The one positive element on our cruise was Captain Camby, who was very assertive and authoritative, as well as keen to meet and communicate with his passengers. The behaviour of some of our fellow passengers was not ... Read More

The only thing to say about the entertainment was that it was loud. We listened to tne full thud of it most nights in our cabin We complained to the Dining Manager Tony ( from Croatia). Having cruised with P&O several times, and on Iona before, we were happy to book a 14 night trip to the Canaries. But even a value proposition can delight customers through actions which are not ... Read More

Review for a Canary Islands Cruise on Iona

What a Beautiful ship even if the central atrium is a little plain by comparison to the competition, the ship was kept spotlessly clean and in nice condition, we found the food on board to be very good by and large, although the main dinning halls menu could feel a bit repetitive, The Epicurean was well worth the extra money as was Shindu, we had mixed results from the Keel & Cow with a couple of ... Russell, Royal Caribbean 401(k) Suit Could Cover Class of 7,000

By Jacklyn Wille

Jacklyn Wille

A former Royal Caribbean Cruises employee is seeking class status in a lawsuit saying Russell Investments Trust Co. mishandled the cruise line’s $500 million 401(k) plan by switching out well-performing Vanguard funds for its own struggling proprietary investments.

Plaintiff Ann Johnson asked the US District for the Southern District of Florida to certify a class covering about 7,000 participants in the Royal Caribbean retirement plan between October 2015 and when Russell was removed as the plan’s investment manager. The case challenges plan-wide conduct that can be resolved on a class basis, Johnson said in the March 22 motion .

"Live from...."

Hello from sunny Gran Canaria!

But … back to completing my account, such as it is, of yesterday’s visit to Tenerife.  I forgot to mention that the overnight trip from Madeira to Tenerife was really noisy.  There was a bit of movement but we heard a lot of moaning and groaning.  I suppose being low to the water accentuates that?  The captain did say that he would be taking a slightly amended course, to avoid the worst of the expected sea conditions, so it sounds like a good thing he did

Here’s a nice shady bar from yesterday morning when it was scorchio at 26°.  It could’ve over in the afternoon

8CC0B25F-DE34-4575-8829-DFE9BBB308A5.thumb.jpeg.a3bfa68d2850dea3067f398fbaf2185f.jpeg

I think it’s only Limelight which I’ve got to tell you about.

Well, we enjoyed the whole experience.  The performer - Rob Howden or some such - was very personable and could certainly sing.  He played Marius in Les Mis in the West End between 2016 and 2019.   The food and service was good.  Beef fillet, cooked beautifully medium for me, and crusted lamb cutlets for himself, also nicely pink and well presented.

The whole experience was nice - something I’ve not done before.  I suppose it’s similar in price and, err, ambience to Epicurean, in that the standard of food is comparable and in one you get the whole 6* service thing, in the other you get a good hour’s show

The Limelight band & our lady compare did a short set before Rob.  All good.  The band is just keyboard, two guitars & drums, but they could belt it out

Turned out we were sitting next to a very good friend of a very good friend.  Small world!

Lovely day in Gran Canaria today, but more on that, and our trip to Epicurean tonight, in tomorrow’s thrilling episode 🙂

JeanieC,Aston

I remember a horrendous crossing from La Palma to Madeira many many years ago…the Captain reported it was due to x2 continental shelves meeting in that area of the ocean.

Wow! That was 1999 on Thomson Topaz,,,,an Airtours ship supposed to sail in the opposite direction was still in Madeira when we arrived,,never risked it,,,,the Topaz,,ex Empress of Britain never missed a sailing due to weather the Captain said..unlike today Leviathans.

Morning from Fuerteventura.  I haven’t seen Yorkshire Phil yet but I’ll keep a look out 🙂

Gran Canaria yesterday was very pleasant, though thronged with people.  MSC Euribia was docked with us.  She’s a bit of a beast; I suspect she’s bigger than Iona

There is work ongoing, building a new terminal, so we exited the ship straight onto a building site, complete with piledriver, which kinda scuppered the plans to sit on the shady side reading for the end of the afternoon

As you will have gathered by now, this is very much a “rehabilitation” cruise, where we get back into the swing of things and relearn how to enjoy all that cruises offer.  So, in ports we stay in the open air and that’s exactly how we enjoyed ourselves yesterday, with plenty of walking and sitting and sitting and walking on the long long esplanade.  Disappointed that we’ve never seen a repeat of the dancing on a temporary wooden floor on the beach which we watched on our first visit here.  There was plenty of beach sport though - tennis, volleyball, handball and basketball I think.  Plus a nice, more sedate, pastime something like bowls or pétanque, but played with a circle of wooden pegs/skittles at which participants threw another skittle.

Well, that’s all appetite stimulating, so we made a beeline to our favourite beachside restaurant for our favourite type of food, plus a small white wine for me and a pint for Monsieur.  Grilled sole, sardines, Canadian potatoes with a nice fiery mojo sauce and bread.  Pretty reasonable for €35, considering the location

Time for a break, I think

I need to get my Wordle done!

We have friends on the Euribia who posted a pic of  'your' ship in Gran Canaria . They have been on Iona and Arvia  previously but are enjoying Euribia more . We enjoy both lines and trying to fit a cruise on Euribia before she leaves Southampton .

The whole experience was nice - something I’ve not done before.  I suppose it’s similar in price and, err, ambience to Epicurean, in that the standard of food is comparable and in one you get the whole 6* service thing, in the other you get a good hour’s show   🙂

Perfect description of what Limelight is IMO

Wrong thread sorry

Thanks Eddie, sounds like you’re having a fairly chilled time. Not jealous of your weather at all 😁

Thanks Eddie, really enjoying this as we’re doing the exact same in 8 weeks. Giving us new ideas on things to do and see as we’ve done the Canaries a few times.

Getting giddy now 🤣

So, I think I need to post about dinner at Epicurean after our day in Lanzarote

It was a bit curate’s egg, with all the bad bits connected to table location.  IMO one of the main positives about Epicurean is the relaxed ambience and feeling of space and leisure.  There is space between tables in the main part of the restaurant but we (and lots of others) we seated in a sort of wing, which is akin to a wide corridor, with the tables set out either side. Probably a dozen tables in all, with a “filigree” screen each side, making 4 areas of 3 or 4 tables.  Big tables (nice) but little space between them.  Not as close as the banquette tables in the MDR but too close for my liking.  It meant that it was easier for me to hear the people sitting either side of me than to hear my husband speaking from the other side of the large table.

And, to add great insult to major injury (not really, but it annoyed me) the size and layout of our “dining corridor” meant that there could be no table side performances - we had the carved ham as starter but it was prepared elsewhere and brought to the table ready-plated.  And, of course, no crepes Suzette.  Boo!  The guy was preparing some as we walked through to be seated.  I smiled at him and said something like Yum. See you later.

Well that didn’t work out - no crepes for me 😕

As for the food - pretty damn good, as usual.  As I said, carved ham starter, steak for OH, cod & lobster tail for me.  I think mine was a bit below par - the lobster was chewy and it was presented with a little bowl of eccentric, undressed, salad.  Frisée, sliced and shredded carrot, radish.   Nah!

The baked chocolate cheesecake for pudding made amends.  OH had the crepes but, of course, they just appeared ready plated - someone else got to see them being made

So, a mixed bag.  Sufficient to say we cancelled the booking we had for Thursday.  I think a £30 supplement requires the event to be 100% and there’s no way we would be happy to be seated in the dining annexe again.  I can forgive a small blip with the food

I should say that the service was impeccable, as ever

… and on we go

Fuertaventura next

I'm trying to picture where this annexe is?

Its a pretty big restaurant to not need an annexe?

I seem to recall some tables set back together from the window tables?  Furthest in to the restaurant?

Is that where you mean?

Thank you for posting about your cruise, with humour and honesty! I have been reading this with the view of booking a voyage on Iona, but think its size is really against this for me.  You have probably saved us money on a trip that was not for us. There are enough ships out there to find what we like, but do wish a few more lines would use Southampton with round trips.

Enjoy the rest of your cruise and warmth, you are missing some awful weather here!

I used annexe semi-ironically

It is that part of the restaurant furthest from the greeting podium.  You walk through the nicely spaced part and the tables we were on are in 2 lines there, beside the windows

I was going to apologise for putting you off, but if Iona is not for you then I suppose it’s a good thing

We thought we might not cope with the size but there are so many facilities it’s great

i have spoken to some older people who are finding the size a problem though.  It’s quite a walk from one end of the ship to the other - or from deck 3 disembarkation to decks 16/17 pools etc

Thanks for the update 👍

Luckily, and a minor 'benefit' of having a wheelchair user in our party, we have always been taken on the 'route of least resistance' to a table in the main section, be it in the middle or against the windows.  I too miss the spectacle of the crêpes being prepared tableside; I suppose, if you had asked your waiting team to let you know when they were going to start yours, you could have gone to the middle of the restaurant to watch the spectacle.

Fuerteventura next?  We're not stopping there, just doing Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.  Will you be just one day in Lisbon then, or missing Cadiz?

Yes I think I know where you mean now

I wouldn't want to be sat there.

We normally book early times and to date have been given window tables as we have been the first entering the restaurant

If we book again I might actually request window tables from now on

Can't do any harm

We just have calls at Cadiz and Lisbon to come.  No overnights

Thinking further going Epicurean - there were other factors which marred my enjoyment, sadly they were fellow guests.   One woman who was obviously unwell - in the throes of the worst part of a cold, or with a nice active case of the you-know-whats.  Definitely not an asthmatic or medicine induced cough - she was unwell, looked feverish and was coughing constantly, or holding a tissue to her mouth.

The other was The Loud Man.  Near us, on a table of four.  Should I say leading a table of four?  He was extraordinarily loud and dominated the group.  The atmosphere changed completely when they left - calm and quiet

Our first visit to Epicurean, years ago, was marred by a large table of noisy folk.  Sad to say there were some uniformed officers among them.  That put us off returning for quite some time, and when we did finally book we were apprehensive as to whether we would enjoy

Large v small?  There are plenty of pluses and minuses.  We went up the Amazon on Adonia as she then was, possibly the Azamara ship you are now on.  I appreciate all your points about her - she was lovely.

It’s a shame when the behaviour of some guests can spoil the enjoyment of a venue for others. Sadly, it happens all to often.

1 hour ago, Interestedcruisefan said: I guess some people on here would prefer even smaller cruise ships with even more personals service    Quality river cruises even more intimate of course   And some people on the even smaller ships would prefer super yachts   But everyone has to find the level they are willing to pay

Seadream yacht club may suit.

So, where are we?  Holiday mode has definitely kicked in and the sea day laziness.

Fuertaventura and Lanzarote, plus second visit to Limelight and first visit to Keel and Cow (or Cow Heel Pie as my husband insists on calling it)

Fuertaventura was a very nice port stop.  Weather was pretty much perfect and there is a nice flat walk from the dock around to the beach.  The walk up to the Main Street, such as it is, is steep but fairly short.  There’s not an awful lot to see once you get there though - I think the seafront walk is nicer.

Iona was the only ship in - I wonder if there would even be space for two?   A photogenic place.  I very much liked the statues and assorted installations.

A792A495-D899-4C55-AC74-2B59612231CB.thumb.jpeg.00422310e94e916ff957e74c5a5eca6f.jpeg

We went to Limelight again.  Hadn’t originally intended to visit twice in 3 days but the scheduling of the loyalty lunch meant we had to move one reservation.

Celena Cherry was a very good act.  Energetic and melodic and she won over the audience very quickly.  Again the food was very good, served promptly.  We went for the fishy side of the menu this time, and found it equally good as the meaty theme last time

So having eaten Limelight/Epicurean/Limelight on 3 successive nights, I can confirm that our future paid-for dining is likely to veer towards the cabaret

Day something or another - Lanzarote

Why do people say Lanzagrotty?  We’ve enjoyed land-based holidays in lovely spots on Lanzarote, and there are pleasant enough places within a short walk of the port

We were the only ship in

So, eschewing the shuttle bus, which only seems to go a few hundred yards, we walked off to see what we could see.  We mostly needed a second layer, for the first time since Madeira.  It was more cloudy than sunny and there was a nagging wind.

We were a bit later leaving the ship, which meant that by the time we had walked enough of a walk to work up a thirst all the bars and cafes were full.  I think this may prove to be an issue with the larger ships and the small and medium sized ports.  I’m hoping Cadiz and Lisbon will be able to absorb 5000 visitors more easily

I’m a bit slow on the uptake but am I right in thinking Iona only calls at ports where security can be on-shored?  The thought of 5000 passengers coming onboard using onboard scanning sends a bit of a shudder …. I’m imagining queues down the gangways and down the dockside.

We treated ourselves to ice creams at Ripples.  Quite nice and reasonable value.  Don’t tell anyone but I believe I saw a well known poster there.  I should have said Hello but would have been mortified if I’d made a mistake and accosted a perfect stranger

Evening visit to the Keel and Cow.  Our first use of the virtual queue, which worked perfectly.  I’ll reserve judgement until we go again (if we go again). I had fillet steak, which isn’t my normal choice but was Irish, grass-fed, beef.  The sirloin and rib eye are both grain-fed and wouldn’t be my first choice.  I found my fillet nicely cooked to pink, as I prefer, but it was fillet and thus lacking marbling (and texture and flavour). OH had a rib eye, and my taste of that was delicious.  So, dilemma if we go again - probably won’t.

The steaks are served in a standard fashion, with a measure of chips, a garlic bulb, half a tomato and a mushroom.  Also an annoying wedge of iceberg lettuce with white dressing and pink crumble (?bacon?). Once again, impossible to eat tidily and liable to result in Mayo/Caesar dressing … well anywhere really, if you weren’t very careful

We had the pudding sharing plate.  Nice.  Good to see Purbeck ice cream.  Nicer than Ripples, imo

We've been on both Iona and Arvia where security screening has taken place onboard, albeit very rarely; it wasn't really much of an inconvenience, and a couple of times appeared to be quicker than port security screening.

My Brother in law and wife are on  Fuerteventura on holiday and sent me photos today one of which was Iona. I said if we had done a B2B we could have met up with them 😆 .  They live Taunton and we are  Manchester and neither of us like the drive 😆 .

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Virgin Voyages

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

History of P&O Cruises

The story of P&O Cruises began in 1837 when the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson. Originally operating as a mail and passenger service, the company’s inaugural voyage took place in the same year, with a paddle steamer sailing from London to Spain and Portugal.

Fast forward to 1840, and the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company merged with the Oriental Steam Navigation Company to form the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). This merger marked a significant turning point for the company, as it expanded its operations to include routes to India , Australia, and the Far East.

Over the years, P&O Cruises continued to grow and innovate, cementing its position as a leading force in the cruise industry. It introduced modern steamships with enhanced passenger amenities, such as private cabins, dining saloons, and first-class lounges, offering passengers a new level of comfort and luxury.

During World War II, many of P&O Cruises’ ships were requisitioned by the British government for military use. However, after the war, the company bounced back, modernizing its fleet and resuming its passenger services.

In the 1970s, P&O Cruises underwent a transformation, shifting its focus to leisure cruising. The iconic ship Canberra, dubbed the “White Funnel” due to its distinctive exterior, was introduced in 1961 and became the flagship of P&O Cruises. This marked the beginning of a new era for the company.

In the following decades, P&O Cruises expanded its fleet and introduced new ships, each more luxurious than the last. The company embraced innovation, incorporating state-of-the-art amenities and facilities to enhance the passenger experience. P&O Cruises became synonymous with leisure travel, providing unforgettable vacation experiences to people from all walks of life.

In recent years, P&O Cruises has continued to evolve and adapt to changing consumer preferences. The company has focused on sustainability and responsible tourism, implementing environmentally friendly practices to minimize its impact on the environment.

Today, P&O Cruises operates a fleet of modern and elegant ships, offering a wide range of itineraries to destinations around the world. With a commitment to delivering exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and exciting onboard experiences, P&O Cruises remains a trusted and highly regarded name in the cruising industry.

As P&O Cruises looks to the future, it continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what a cruise vacation can offer. With a rich history spanning over 180 years, P&O Cruises has a legacy of excellence and a vision for creating unforgettable memories for every passenger who steps on board.

Cool Cruiser

This is the first time we have booked a P and O cruise. We are going to end our cruise in Sydney and have asked to change our flights for a later date as we feel 1 night in Sydney is too short. We have booked with Imagine Cruising. Has anyone changed flights for return trip. We paid extra to be upgraded. But the company refuse to let us change flights

What do the T and C's say on the ticket. Maybe the only way they could get cheap tickets for the air fares was by agreeing to a no change condition. (Bit like if you book a getaway fare and cancel it 2 hours later you will still be charged 100% of the fare.)

May not help but we have also booked this cruise with Imagine, probably the same leg of the cruise and are flying to LA with Virgin, then back from Sydney with them.

Previously we had sailed around Oz with Celebrity and, at the time of booking, asked for an extra 3 nights in Sydney and were quoted an extra £100 approx with the justification being that they had priced the holiday on bulk flights booked on that day.

I am sure that they can change the flights but at what cost? I am sure that you will enjoy the extra time in Sydney if you can get/afford it, but if not spend the whole day of arrival sightseeing intensively!

Thank you for your comments, we are flying with British Airways there and back. Leaving UK on 31st January. We will see what the conditions were as they have only just supplied a copy.
