Qaqortoq Cruise Port Guide

Qaqortoq, Greenland is a place teeming with thousands of years of Nordic history, soothing hot springs, and water activities like exploring on a sailboat. On a transatlantic cruise that stops in Greenland, you’ll find yourself far from the ordinary. Traveling in an Arctic climate requires a certain level of curiosity and adventure, but you never have to sacrifice comfort while you explore the region on one of our luxury cruise ships.

Only about 3,000 people live in Qaqortoq, which means it’s a cozy, tight-knit community. Take a dip in the hot springs of Uunartoq for complete rejuvenation and restoration. Discover the ruins of an ancient Viking settlement at Hvalsey Church. Experience authentic cuisine from the area, or simply walk around the colorful streets. On your Greenland cruise, this quirky colonial town will welcome you with open arms.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to qaqortoq, lake tasersuaq.

The majestic beauty of this artsy Greenland town is best experienced on foot. A hike around Lake Tasersuaq promises incredible views of Qaqortoq and the mountain just beyond.

Hvalsey Church

The last evidence of the Vikings in Greenland can be found at Hvalsey Church, where the best-preserved Nordic ruins in the area overlook the waterfront. The isolated, commanding ruins showcase thousands of years of Nordic history. Guided tours are popular, and it takes about 25-30 minutes via boat to reach the ruins of Hvalsey Church.

Qaqortoq Museum

The Qaqortoq Museum is an ideal stop for history buffs during a Greenland cruise. The museum is cleverly located within an old blacksmith workshop. Here, you’ll find artifacts of both the Inuit and Norse populations from thousands of years ago.

Top things to do in qaqortoq, enjoy the arts.

Take a tour called the Qaqortoq Art Walk, where you’ll experience an interactive, open-air art exhibition featuring the work of nearly 20 Nordic artists. Each of the 24 sculptures carefully cradles the city of Qaqortoq. Called “Stone and Man,” it’s a can’t-miss experience for Nordic history buffs and art lovers.

Nature Walks

Qaqortoq is best experienced on foot, whether you’re taking a nature tour through the foothills or gallivanting through the center of town. Qaqortoq’s hillsides lead to stunning fjord views, dramatic landscapes, and rows of colorful colonial homes in red, orange, and green everywhere you look.

Top Food & Drink Spots Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

The food scene in Qaqortoq is minimal, so don’t expect to find chain restaurants lining every street corner downtown. Stop in for drinks and live music at Arctic Cafe. When you see a yellow VW peeking from the wall, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Restaurant Napparsivik is popular for morning or afternoon coffee, fresh meat and fish dishes, and regional eats. Inside the Hotel Qaqortoq, enjoy a drink at Mikisoq, a local pub.

Culture & History of the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

Surviving in the frigid climate was no small feat for early residents, who were Paleo-Eskimo populations, Norse Vikings, and later, the Dorset people. Most of Greenland is occupied by arctic ice caps, so most people who settle down to live in the country gather in coastal cities and towns. By the 20th century, Greenland had established strong trade ties with North America and Denmark. The economy relies on natural resources, from whaling to fishing.

Qaqortoq Port Facilities & Location

Once you arrive, there is a tourist office with helpful city maps and free internet. You can get your bearings here before heading out to explore. Local maps detail the area’s hiking trails and the most popular attractions you can choose from on a Greenland cruise to Qaqortoq.

Transportation in Qaqortoq

Qaqortoq is fairly walkable, and there’s a ferry service that connects the city to other parts of the country. You can head into the center of town after a short tender ride while on cruises to Iceland and Greenland.

Shopping Near the Qaqortoq Cruise Port

Shopping near the Qaqortoq cruise port is fairly minimal since the town has a population of 3,000 people. Qaqortoq Souvenir Shop is a popular place to shop for keepsakes like handmade goods and authentic souvenirs.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Greenland is the Danish krone (DKK), but you’ll find British pounds and U.S. dollars are accepted in some establishments. Credit and debit cards are less likely to be used in smaller shops, so be sure to ask when you arrive before trying to pay with a credit card. A service charge is typically included in your bill at restaurants.

An Insider’s Guide to Qaqortoq, Greenland

greenland boat cruises

Belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark but run independently, those who cruise to Greenland meet a world where European culture meshes with that of the Inuit in a harsh but beautiful landscape of ice, rock, and the sea. Greenland or “Kalaallit Nunaat” (“Land of the People") in the Greenlandic language is a place of extremes. Greenland is dominated by the second largest ice-sheet of the world. Although huge in size it is inhabited by less than a 100.000 people. The majority of the Greenlandic population is formed by Inuit, the indigenous people of the Arctic. Despite the restricted access to land due to the ice sheet Greenland sports a diverse array of wildlife. Many land mammals enjoy the northern and eastern shores of the island where human populations are few and far between. The waters around Greenland are alive with belugas, blues, fins, Greenland whales (a.k.a. bowhead whales), minkes, narwhals, and sperm whales.

Greenland FAQ

Where is greenland.

Greenland is the world’s biggest island stretching approximately 2800 kilometres (1750 miles) from north to south. 85% of Greenland is covered in ice and is therefore white on the map.

What is the temperature and weather like in Greenland?

The size of Greenland creates a diverse range of temperature and climate conditions. For example, the populated sections of Greenland are all found on the coast because this area is free of ice. Meanwhile, the central region of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet.

In Nuuk, the average winter temperature reaches as low as -8 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit), but this climbs up to 7 degrees Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer. The area only rarely experiences any temperatures that go above this range, which makes the summer cool but renders the winter more tolerable than many regions that have a more variable climate.

What will I see along the coastline of Greenland?

The surface of Greenland is dramatic and spectacular. Heavily indented with numerous fjords, the coast is formed by spectacular high mountains, 2000 meters (6500 feet) high cliffs and innumerable glaciers. The large glaciers produce the huge cathedral-like icebergs that are abundant in the Greenlandic waters. Greenland and its surrounding waters are home to an impressive array of wildlife.

What wildlife can I expect in Greenland?

A Greenland cruise may enable you to see a large variety of birds. There are about 52 bird species on the island.

The number of land mammal species is relatively small, but it is still possible to see polar bears, Arctic hares, reindeer, musk oxen and Arctic foxes. Marine mammals such as Fin whale, Minke whale and Humpback whales are frequently seen. Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, and Pilot Whales are also seen occasionally.

Greenland is home to more terrestrial mammal species than Spitsbergen: The extremely rare Arctic Wolves, Arctic Foxes, Ermines, Collared Lemmings, Muskoxen, and Arctic Hares. The Polar Bear is rarely seen on the west coast, but is regularly seen on the northern and north-eastern coasts.

What does the surface of Greenland look like?

Huge outlet glaciers slowly slide down the mountains towards the sea where the ice breaks of and creates the huge cathedral like icebergs that are so abundant in the Greenlandic waters.

What is the time in Greenland?

Greenland uses Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), with a range of UTC +0 to -4. This means that if it is 18:00 UTC (6 p.m.) in Nuuk when you travel to Greenland, it would be 16:00 (4 p.m.) in New York City, USA, 21:00 (9 p.m.) in London, U.K. and 09:00 (9 a.m.) the next morning in the Antarctic South Pole.

Greenland: The Land and People

Fewer than 100,000 people call Greenland home, the majority of them Inuit – the indigenous people of the Arctic. Positioned northeast of Canada, Greenland is considered part of North America, though politically it has always been associated with Scandinavia.

Despite the mile-thick ice sheet that covers most of the island, Greenland is home to a variety of wildlife. Numerous land mammals reside along the northern and eastern shores, where human populations are scarce. The waters around Greenland are similarly rich with belugas, blues, fins, Greenland whales (bowheads), minkes, narwhals, and sperm whales.

Greenland’s ice sheet is the only one of its size outside Antarctica. About a tenth of the Earth’s surface is covered in similar sheets, nearly all of which are concentrated in Greenland and the Antarctic Continent. As such, human centers of activity―even the capital of Nuuk―are chiefly located along the shore. It almost goes without saying, then, that there are no roads connecting the Greenland coasts. Travel there is done only by air and sea.

Facts About Greenland

  • Greenland is officially part of Denmark, though it retains a great degree of self-rule
  • Almost 80% of Greenland is frozen in ice – only Antarctica has a larger ice sheet
  • The remaining 20% of Greenland’s ice-free land is nearly the size of Sweden
  • Greenland is the largest island (and least densely populated landmass) on Earth
  • An estimated two million seals live in the waters around Greenland
  • Greenland’s ice sheet is estimated to be between 400,000 and 800,000 years old
  • Words like “igloo” and “kayak” – and more than a few synonyms for snow – originated from the Inuit of Greenland
  • Greenland’s warmest temperatures don’t average much higher than 10°C even during the summer

Stretching approximately 2,800 kilometres (1,750 miles) from north to south and approximately 1,000 kilometres (625 miles) from east to west, Greenland is the world’s biggest island. Some do claim that Australia is a bigger island, but according to international definitions, Australia is regarded as a continent. East Greenland is just a short flight from Iceland, but its culture and landscapes are a world away. In a land dominated by the Ice Cap and impossibly steep mountain ranges, 3,500 people have made it their home. Their culture is born from myths and legends, often expressed in bone and rock carvings, but at the same time it is a globally connected culture with strong hunting roots and an everyday spirit of adventure. Discover Scoresbysund where you can paddle and Zodiac cruise along one of the world’s longest, largest and deepest fjord systems. At Ittoqqortoormiit, visit Greenland’s most remote settlement, home to approximately 450 mostly Inuit, people.South Greenland lives up to its name as it is truly a ‘green land’. It is a land of jagged mountains and green pastures where sheep farms directly border ice fjords, and Norse settlement history intertwines with modern fishing and hunting communities. Natural hot springs on a remote island, big wall climbing, and fjord kayaking abound in South Greenland.

Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, located in West Greenland is an arctic metropolis with a small-town feel, shaped by nature and known for its cultural diversity. While Nuuk is the colourful heart of this nation, the smaller communities of Paamiut south of the capital and Kapisillit in the Nuuk Fjord, are places to kick back and spend time in the outdoors. From the Disko Bay area in central West Greenland to the polar extremes of the far north, the scale of North Greenland is hard to fathom. Along a coastline stretching thousands of miles lie small communities based on hunting and fishing, in a land ruled by the Polar Night in winter and the summer’s Midnight Sun. From the strange volcanic rocks along the hiking trails on Qeqertarsuaq, the constant flow of massive icebergs from one of the world’s fastest flowing glaciers in Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site, the diverse landscapes and superb whale and bird-watching opportunities in Disko Bay, makes West Greenland an ideal place to experience an expedition cruise.

Why Join a Greenland Expedition Cruise?

As one of the best known Arctic islands, Greenland is a remarkable destination that leaves its imprint in ways not entirely explainable. Whether you’re exploring the East, West or South, our Greenland Expeditions reveal the beauty of the world’s largest island.

Many people still have misconceptions about this alluring Arctic nation. For one, despite being almost completely covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, there is more to Greenland than glaciers and ice. It is a nation with layers of culture and history that will unfold before you. Greenland has one of the world’s smallest populations, with approximately 56,500 inhabitants. Today, 88% of Greenland’s population is Inuit (predominantly Kalaallit) or a mix of Danish and Inuit. The remaining 12% are of European descent, mainly Danish.

A trip to Greenland takes you to one of the planet’s last great wildernesses, a remote land of ice and snow. Offering remarkable landscapes, exceptional wildlife, iceberg-filled fjords, majestic peaks, vast tundra, Viking history and contemporary Inuit culture, Greenland is truly unlike anywhere else in the world. The fjords and mountains of Greenland are where life is concentrated. Summer is the best time to visit Greenland – when wildflowers are in full bloom, birds start breeding and wildlife sightings are most common. If you’re lucky you can observe bands of caribou, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and polar bears. Seals, walruses and many species of whales including humpbacks, orcas and white belugas also gather near its shores.

In Greenland, tiny, isolated communities are scattered among the fjords, accessible only by small plane (or helicopter when there is no room for a runway), boat, kayak, afoot or by dogsled in winter. Discover this fascinating country’s hidden secrets as you traverse its waters and embark on unforgettable adventures.

Greenland Wildlife Encounters

Greenland is a biodiversity hotspot, and wildlife encounters are expected throughout the cruise. The rugged terrain and sea ice you’ll enjoy panoramic views of throughout our Greenland Arctic expedition provide a unique habitat for the wildlife that lives here. Our Expedition Team includes onboard naturalists that will educate and guide you through your wildlife encounters both on land and at sea.

A largely remote wilderness, Greenland’s unique natural habitats provide a home for a plethora of captivating wildlife. Some highlights for lucky travellers include polar bears, Arctic foxes, reindeer, Arctic hares, humpback whales, blue whales, fin whales, narwhals, ringed seals, countless Arctic bird species and one of the largest populations of muskoxen.

Visit Greenland on an Aurora Expeditions cruise for whale watching, opportunities to see the majestic polar bear and much more.

Unique Greenland Experiences

Being polar expeditions, our Greenland tours include truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences. A cruise in the Arctic Circle around Greenland provides a rare opportunity to take a polar plunge, embark on Zodiac cruises through the ice sheet, and observe unique geological formations and breathtaking scenery on trips ashore.

Our Greenland expedition experts can also take you on optional excursions via our comprehensive activity program . You might want to try an unforgettable journey on our sea kayaks, rock climbing the rugged cliffs of one of the national parks or scuba diving in the polar regions of the Arctic. If you would like to learn more about the included or optional activities, please contact us , we’re here to help!

Greenland Tour Regions

Greenland zodiac cruise

East Greenland

East Greenland is one of the most isolated areas in Greenland and offers fantastic possibilities for big adventures. In East Greenland jagged mountains rise from the sea and giant white and blue icebergs float in deep fjords. Only 120 years ago, there was no connection between West and East Greenland. Therefore, culture and traditions are different to the ones in the west and it is also why East Greenlanders speak a different language. Discover the fascinating geology of the Skaergaard Intrusion, enjoy Zodiac cruises among icebergs and hike through one-of-a-kind tundra.

Prince Christian Sound, Greenland

South Greenland

South Greenland travel also provides opportunities for adventure. Temperatures in southern Greenland are higher than in the rest of the country, sometimes even reaching up to 20° Celsius during summer. The landscapes are greener and the ground more fertile, with many farms along its coast. The area is full of contrasts between the green shades of the landscape and the myriad of blues that paint the ice. The region is popular for those keen on an adventure. Experience hiking tours or go kayaking to see whales and other wildlife. It is easy to take individual trips because the settlements are close to each other with great boat connections. See for yourself when you cruise Prince Christian Sound (Prins Christian Sund), flanked by imposing mountains, where the Viking ruins of Erik the Red still stand from the Middle Ages.

Nuuk, Greenland's capital

West Greenland

West Greenland is the most populated region of the country, containing the nation’s capital, Nuuk, the starting point for most travellers’ on their Greenland adventures. Here, you can visit the largest ice cap in the northern hemisphere, Ilulissat Icefjord. This UNESCO-listed 55km-long natural sculpture park boasts countless jaw-dropping icebergs. Explore untamed nature on foot or from water level in a kayak or Zodiac. Stop at remote villages along the West Greenland coastline to learn about the traditional lifestyle. Historically West Greenland was known for its fishing and hunting industries, which are still an integral part of the local way of life.

West Greenland is also home to Disko Bay, a large and significant bay on the west coast, steeped in history. Its nutrient-rich waters have made it the perfect home for a wide range of species. Disko Bay is a great place for whale watching and kayaking, with a number of different species of whales visiting the bay during the springtime. Disko Bay also attracts migratory seals that use the teaming waters of the bay to feed.

Passenger marvelling at the Northern Lights from the deck of the Greg Mortimer ship in Greenland

North Greenland

North Greenland is home to the harsh realities of the Arctic Islands. It’s the land of the polar nights in the winter and of the midnight sun in the summer. The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon in the Arctic Circle where the sun remains visible throughout the night and day. During the winter months however, North Greenland is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights because of the long nights, with the dark skies making the perfect backdrop to showcase the lights in all their colours. The area is also known for its dog sledding which is common amongst the locals and a fun experience for tourists.

Visit Greenland

Set out on a boat trip in Greenland to open up a world of fjords, whales, and nearby villages..

Sailing is a way of life for Greenlanders, and we are proud to share with you one of our most favorite activities. Sailing expands our world past the city limits we know well and connects us to the incredible nature we love to explore. On the sunniest summer days, we will always choose sailing to a tried-and-true fishing spot or to a small hut in the fjord over staying on land!

The real beauty of taking a tourist boat trip in Greenland is the feeling that you are getting a bespoke experience. As there is no defined route that boat tours must follow, a detour to a rushing waterfall or the area where an eagle’s nest was recently spotted is not out of the ordinary. Your boat trip driver knows these Greenlandic waters from extensive experience sailing, and he wants you to experience the best.

But remember that Greenland’s nature can sometimes show its brutal side. As tempting as it might sound to hire a private boat owner for a boat tour, always opt instead for passenger-approved boats and companies, that comply with the strictest regulations about sailing in Arctic conditions.

“Sailing was nice. I definitely got to see some parts of the area that I would not be able to see without a guided trip. And I got to learn about the history of Greenland at the same time!”

SAILING THROUGH THE SEASONS

If there is open water, then a boat trip is possible! In spring, flexibility is a must as weather and iceberg conditions change from day to day, and so is a warm jacket. If a boat trip in Greenlandic spring sounds chilly, we won’t lie to you – it is! But how exceptional it is to be one of the few taking in the crisp Arctic air from the front deck. A hot cup of tea and the brilliant view take care of the rest.

Summer is truly the prime season for boat tours in Greenland. Winding through the intricate maze of islands and small canals while the warm sun energizes you from overhead, a boat trip can be reminiscent of sailing in the Italian Riviera. But catch sight of a humpback whale or the colorful wooden houses along the coast and realize that, in fact, you are sailing at the top of the world in spectacular Greenland.

Boat tours are available in Greenland year-round. Summer is the primary sailing season, but spring boat tours are possible depending on ice conditions.

Boat tours can last between 2-8 hours. Be sure to pack extra warm clothes, including waterproof layers, and accessories like a hat and gloves.

Boat tours typically accommodate a maximum of 12 persons per boat. There may be a minimum passenger limit.

Many boat tours offer a meal or snack on board. Check with your boat trip description for details.

BEAUTIFUL PRACTICALITY

A boat trip in Greenland for the sake of sailing is delightful, but often the boat tour comes packaged with another experience, under the guise of transportation. With many islands along the coast and no roads outside of town, many of Greenland’s greatest places like calving glaciers, mountain hiking trails, and Norse culture sites are only accessible by water. Think of the aquatic transportation more like an extra boat tour!

In South Greenland, for example, boat tours connect an elaborate route of Viking ruins and modern day sheep farms, and in every town in Greenland, a short boat trip can open up a whole world of village life. Don’t forget that sailing takes place in the same waters that whales call their summer paradise. The cherry on top of a perfect boat trip in Greenland is spotting a humpback and getting an impromptu whale watching tour just before heading home.

Greenland Small Ship Cruises

greenland boat cruises

A Greenland small ship cruise is the best way to explore the world’s largest yet least densely populated island. And we’ve compiled the top Greenland cruises aboard expedition ships under 300 guests. Let our expertise be your guide to discovering this incredible land and finding an expedition cruise in Greenland that matches both your adventurous spirit and travel needs.

Why Cruise to Greenland?

Remote and still largely off the map of mainstream tourism, Greenland offers pristine wilderness, authentic culture and thrilling activities, making it an unforgettable adventure destination. Brightly colored coastal towns, skyscraper icebergs, massive glaciers, extensive fjords, vast tundra and fluffy sled dogs draw photographers and intrepid travelers from all over the world.

As the saying goes, “When you’ve seen the world, there is always Greenland.” Due to Greenland’s inhospitable Arctic terrain, lack of developed road network and the fact that it’s 80% covered by the world’s second-largest ice sheet, it’s not the easiest country to explore. That’s where the benefits of a cruise to Greenland comes in.

Greenland small ship cruises make the most of scattered settlements and remote fjords by sailing you efficiently along the coastline. In fact, of Greenland’s 60,000 inhabitants, 90% are of Indigenous descent, living in settlements up and down the coasts. Greenland is the least densely populated country on the planet, in fact, and is an independent Danish territory with its own parliament.

Depending on where you visit, you may have opportunities for hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, dog sledding, rock climbing and even helicopter assisted adventures. Plus other activities like Zodiac cruising through icefields, watching for arctic wildlife and the aurora borealis, visiting fascinating historic sites and authentic Greenlandic villages.

Greenland Expedition Cruise Ships

Greenland expedition cruise ships are purpose built to explore polar regions in safety and comfort. They feature ice-strengthened hulls, sophisticated navigational equipment, small craft and sometimes even helicopters to transport guests ashore in remote locations exploring away from the ship.

Being on a Greenland expedition cruise does not mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Greenland luxury ships offer large suites, some with balconies, gourmet cuisine and five-star service to satisfy the most sophisticated tastes. View the full fleet of Arctic ships offering Greenland small ship cruises.

Greenland Cruise Itineraries & Regions

Cruises to Greenland visit three distinct regions: East Greenland, South Greenland and West Greenland. Some itineraries may highlight two or three regions, while others concentrate on a deeper exploration of one. Regions of Greenland may be part of an extended route that also include nearby Arctic islands like Svalbard and Iceland to the east, or a greater Canada and Northwest Passage itinerary to the west.

Which area will interest you the most? We take a deeper dive below to help you decide.

East Greenland

Above the Arctic circle, East Greenland is the least visited and most remote part of the island. It offers natural beauty and a surprising collection of flora and fauna. East Greenland is also one of the least populated areas in Greenland. Some communities who live in this isolated territory speak a different language and still follow an ancestral way of life living off the land.

For nine months out of the year, East Greenland is covered with snow and pack ice, so during the short summer season an ice-strengthened vessel is needed to operate here and daily cruise stops are often still guided by weather and ice conditions.

Man from remote Greenland settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit dressed in all white traditional Inuit clothing sings and plays instrument.

In East Greenland you will likely visit two main areas on a Greenland small ship cruise: Scoresby Sund and Northeast Greenland National Park.

Scoresby Sund is the world’s largest and deepest fjord system. Its tree-like structure branches off into a labyrinth of fjords with massive icebergs, towering basalt walls, calving glaciers and surprisingly colorful tundra. Near the mouth of Scoresby Sund is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote settlements on Earth. For most of the year, its 300 inhabitants are cut off from the rest of the country and survive by hunting and fishing. Scoresby Sund is one of the best places in the Arctic to see the northern lights as well as local wildlife.

Farther north is the world’s largest national park, the Northeast Greenland National Park . With no permanent human population, it is one of the best places to spot Greenland’s wildlife and is also an important breeding ground for polar bear and walrus. Access to the park is strictly controlled, so cruise operators must apply for separate permits to sail here.

Cruises to East Greenland typically start with an embarkation from Iceland or Svalbard . Some  Arctic cruises  may visit all three Arctic islands as part of a larger itinerary and range from 10-18 days or more. You can even visit East Greenland from the route of a  North Pole expedition .

South Greenland

South Greenland is a maze of scenic fjords, sounds, islets and inlets. Sailing through Prins Christian Sund and Skjoldungen Sund surrounded by high iconic peaks and turquoise lakes, you’ll see why the heart of this region is known as “Arctic Patagonia.” But it’s not all icy fjords and mountain peaks. South Greenland has a uniquely warm microclimate, and its surprisingly lush and fertile coast is filled with green pastures and sheep farms. The “Garden of Greenland” is perfect for adventure experiences like hiking, kayaking, mountain bike riding, rock climbing and more. From the ruins of Brattahlíð, the estate of Viking Erik the Red, to the modern landscape of Kujataa, the UNESCO World Heritage region of southern Greenland, see historic sites with the largest and best-preserved Norse ruins, green-roofed turf houses, and a 14 th century chapel built and named for Erik the Red’s wife, Tjoldhilde.

Unless it’s part of a larger itinerary, cruises to South Greenland typically start from Narsarsuaq, south Greenland, with charter flights connecting to Reykjavik, Iceland.

In South Greenland tall jagged granite peaks and turquoise water are set against blue sky

West Greenland

Home to Nuuk, the nation’s charming capital, West Greenland is the island’s most developed and visited region. Colorful Inuit communities like Ilulissat, Rode Bay, Ilimanaq and Uummannaq are perched at the edge of the Greenland ice cap and carry on their timeless way of life.

A highlight of the west is cruising through Disko Bay and stopping at several fascinating landing sites. The settlement town of Ilulissat is known for having more sled dogs than people. The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to Jakobshavn Glacier, one of the world’s most active glaciers, dubbed “the birthplace of icebergs.”

The Baffin Sea is the body of water that lies between West Greenland and the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. It serves as the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage, the legendary sea route that links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Access to and from West Greenland is via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. There are Greenland small ship cruises that focus on West Greenland only; explore both West Greenland and Arctic Canada; or use Kangerlussuaq as an embarkation point for Northwest Passage journeys.

Northwest Passage Cruises

Become part of an elite club of cruisers. Greenland cruise itineraries that include the Northwest Passage explore the icy frontier above 80° north on the same route that has attracted legendary explorers for centuries.

Some operators attempt to sail the full length of the Northwest Passage. These journeys range 22-30 days long and start from Kangerlussuaq in west Greenland, cruising long Baffin Island, through the Bellot Strait, along mainland Canada’s northern shoreline and around Alaska’s Far North shoreline, ending in Nome, Alaska.

Abbreviated routes may just explore the eastern portion of the Northwest Passage, starting in West Greenland and ending in the Canadian Arctic archipelago. These itineraries are generally around 17 days.

Coastal Comparison & A Note about Wildlife

The southern, eastern and western coasts of Greenland all have their own unique experiences and features dictated by climate, wildlife, human population and geology.

The west is characterized by beautiful mountainous landscapes and abundant, brightly colored settlements. The south holds fascinating Norse history, and due to a lower human population in the east, there are slightly greater possibilities of seeing more wildlife.

Most travelers come to Greenland to experience the Inuit culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of mountains, glaciers and enormous icebergs. All are possible in any of the three regions. If wildlife is your number one priority, consider adding East Greenland and Svalbard to your itinerary if a combination of landscapes and wildlife is what you’re looking for.

Best Time for Cruises to Greenland

Most Greenland cruises operate between June and October, when most of the country’s coasts are snow-free and vegetation is thawed out. The midnight sun can be experienced in the summer between mid-April to the end of August. From the end of August through October, the aurora borealis can be viewed. In fact, our AdventureSmith experts witnessed the northern lights enroute to East Greenland during an August North Pole expedition that stopped in Scoresby Sund (pictured below). See all focused northern lights cruises to learn more.

When visiting Greenland, remember that it’s the biggest island in the world, so there are climate variations throughout the seasons, from coast to coast, and even from fjord to fjord.

Guests stand on deck of ship staring up at the green strip of lights across the dark night sky, it the aurora borealis in Greenland.

Hear It From Greenland Cruise Travelers

I’m 72 and I was looking for an adventure which was different from the usual European trip of visiting endless museums, palaces, churches, etc. I don’t enjoy crowded venues, mobbed by other tourists. Greenland was not a place that every other traveler visits. This expedition gave me the opportunity to hike in places where no one had stepped foot before, in breathtaking surroundings and yet I didn’t have make any arrangements for sleeping accommodations, dining, tours, etc. AdventureSmith and Quark did it all for me, all I had to do is board the ship!

I loved this trip exploring South Greenland. We experienced so much in our time aboard and we had great weather during our trip. The scenery was stunning and varied. We spent a lot of time off the ship exploring by zodiac, on foot, paddling, and by helicopter(2x). Exploring by helicopter and making 2 landings in Greenland was an unforgettable experience.

Fascinating trip to a rarely visited part of the world on an exceptional vessel.

We had an absolutely perfect trip!! First class from beginning to end. Loved the helicopter rides and the views we were able to experience from high above Greenland. The ship was fabulous. The room was great. Spacious, considering we were on a ship. It had a large window so we could take in all of the spectacular views. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. We would definitely travel with Quark again.

Accommodations Review

We had an Explorer Triple which was roomy enough for three. It had lots of storage. The shower was OUTSTANDING!

Meals Review

A wonderful variety, prepared extremely well and they were able to address specific requests.

Itinerary Review

I enjoyed the ability to visit hiking sites via the helicopters. I felt like our group was possibly the first people to walk on these locations. The paddle excursion around and among icebergs was a thrill and of course, the various sites for hiking via the zodiacs was always enjoyable. Everywhere seemed to be pristine.

Transportation Review

Clear instructions regarding our Quark connections.

Fellow Passengers Review

I loved meeting my fellow passengers from around the world. Everyone was friendly and fun to be around.

Crew & Guides Review

The Expedition Leader explained considerations for the following day’s activities and she always seemed to find a work around if the weather (clouds, ice, etc) didn’t permit the “planned” days activities. She was personable, humorous and very professional. I was wowed by her ability to get things done.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Arielle forwarded us information in a timely manner and was available to answer our questions if they weren’t addressed in the Quark information package.

Ultramarine is the culmination of decades of expedition experience built into the perfect expedition platform. The Balcony Suite I was in was comfortable, quiet, and was in a good location to access all parts of the ship. I enjoyed the Common areas of the ship a lot, the Panorama Lounge + Espresso Station, the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch, the ambassador theater for presentations and briefings and the massive outdoor areas for taking in the views.

I enjoyed Heli Hiking in Prince Christian Sound. We were able to get amazing 360 degree views with multiple fjords, rocky peaks, alpine lakes, and hanging glaciers. The fjords in this area are framed by glacier carved granite domes and spires with some still having glaciers around the tops and in the valleys. Landing on the ice sheet looked like you were landing on the moon with Ice as all you can see in all directions. They had expedition teams members on the ice who gave you a brief intro to the environment and a couple directions about where you could and couldn't go. The landing site they had chosen had solid ice underfoot and small creeks and pools around the immediate area where you could see the most beautiful blue colors of the ice coming through the crystal clear water above. Being on the ice sheet even for a short time was a breathtaking highlight from the trip. The Heli flight back I had a window seat and was able to take some amazing aerial shots of the ice sheet and tidewater glaciers from above on the way back to the ship.

The food aboard was excellent and the service was excellent also. I liked the option to eat at the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch. It has a great view and is smaller and less busy than the Balena restaurant which is the main one. I think more variety could be offered at the buffets.

This trip has a variety of ability levels and ages. The expedition team did a great job of provided activities for everyone. There were some passengers I enjoyed socializing with more than others but that is to be expected in any group setting.

Ali was our expedtion leader and she was amazing throughout. We had great weather and we were able to accomplish so many activites throughout the voyage. When you think about what it takes to operate so many activities and the amount of staff and resources that takes, it is amazing what they accomplished. I enjoyed interacting with Mauricio, Colin, Nix, Alice, Emily, Juju, Clement, Gordo all from the Expedition team. There were so many aboard and they were all personable and accessible. I enjoyed talking with them at meals or in the lounge as well as on the excursions. Many of the staff had worked with Quark for 10+ years in both Arctic and Antarctica.

Be ready to be flexible and to be active. Luggage requirements for the charter flights were a challenge so plan to pack light and efficient

The vessel is luxurious, cabins and public areas first rate.

The buffet was more appealing with more choices than the restaurant which tried hard to be innovative, but missed appealing to me.

[I most enjoyed]...Seeing 13 polar bears in 6 days acting in a natural way, showing curiosity but no fear. The vastness of the sea and landscape. Riding in a dogsled. Wish we had more chances to visit land and see Arctic plants.

Be prepared to be in awe.

Steve Moir expedition leader had unlimited enthusiasm that was contagious. Naturalists Alize Fouchard, Alexandra Morozova, and Gordana Mrakovcic not only led walks but also gave excellent lectures. Ornithologist Manuel Marin was special, as was local guide Jaakusaaq Soerensen, who taught us about Inuit culture, religion, and language.

There were more English speakers on this cruise than my previous Ponant cruise. Had good interactions with a good number of them.

Andrew Browning never misses a detail in preparing me for my trips. Can’t ask for better. I recommend AdventureSmith Explorations to friends and family frequently.

First rate all the way!

Liked the wide variety at each meal. It was nice to have wine served with dinner. Deserts were fantastic. I liked the fact that you could also order items that were served daily at lunch and dinner. An example would be to get a hamburger at lunch or a grilled chicken breast at dinner. That was nice. Only thing a did not like were the cookies. They were bland.

Wow! So much beauty in Greenland! We LOVED the kayaking amid the huge icebergs. That was our favorite experience. We also LOVED the helicopter rides, especially over the ice sheet. It was jaw dropping! We enjoyed meeting some of the Greenlanders on our stops at the villages. They had a choir which performed for us. It was wonderful.  I'm sure they spent a lot of time practicing. The hikes we took were all great and each one was a little different. We really enjoyed doing the Polar Plunge! It was more fun than I expected. Plus, we received a "badge" showing our Arctic Polar Plunge had been accomplished.  LOVED the shot of Vodka too!

Go! The trip was even better than I expected!

Allison Gordan (Our leader) was incredible!!! She guided this cruise through unexpected weather in order that we could enjoy every aspect of this tour that we had hoped for. We were able to do everything because of her determination to give us the best trip possible. She is a wonderful speaker too. Funny, but professional.  What really impressed me was that she called us by name after a couple of days on the trip. There were 3 of us together, and she got the names right every time. There were 160 guests on this ship. How does she do that?? She certainly made us feel important. Plus, she was so nice to talk to. Answered all of our questions. She was just wonderful. We also really enjoyed her father, Ian Gordan. He was funny, personable, and a true professional. Also, kudos to our Nix, our photographer. She did a great job and fun to be with. Other great staff members included Marla, Alice, Peter, Fabrece, Neil, actually everyone was super great and extremely helpful no matter what we needed.

We met so many great people from Ireland, Australia, England, South Africa, America, Canada. Some of whom I will never forget!

Everything was perfect! Arielle was fantastic. She was right there anytime we needed anything. Outstanding service and friendly too!

Cosmopolitan Reykjavík

Reykjavík is full of art, culture, and delightful history. It is definitely worth discovering, either before or after your cruise to Greenland.

Stroll along Laugavegur, filled with boutiques and outdoor shops, or head to the architecturally striking Hallgrímskirkja

church or the fascinating Reykjavík Art Museum. Why not book a Pre-Program with us? That way, you can discover the nearby waterfalls, hot springs, geysers, and national parks.

At Reykjavík Harbor, MS Fridtjof Nansen awaits you. After collecting your complimentary expedition jacket, take time to settle into your cabin. Your adventure has begun.

greenland boat cruises

Crossing the Denmark Strait

We sail to Greenland across the Denmark Strait, the route taken by Erik the Red, supposedly the first European to have settled there. Relax and explore the stylish onboard facilities of our hybrid electric–powered ship.

Your Expedition Team will explain the protocols of respectfully visiting wildlife habitats and indigenous Arctic communities. In the Science Center, learn more about Greenland’s geology, or join one of our Citizen Science projects. Then hit the gym, swim in the infinity pool, book a treatment in the wellness area, or enjoy a delicious meal in one of our three onboard restaurants.

greenland boat cruises

Culture and history in Qaqortoq

Our expedition cruise of Greenland begins in earnest in a town has been settled since prehistoric times. The colorful houses and lush scenery of Qaqortoq provide a beautiful backdrop for its rich culture.

Explore the local museum, which includes rare Inuit artifacts, or enjoy lush scenery on a walk to a nearby lake. Join an optional excursion to meet friendly locals and hear their stories at a traditional kaffemik social gathering.

greenland boat cruises

Explore Kvanefjord

Experience the sublime fjords of Greenland’s west coast as we reach Kvanefjord in Sermersooq, meaning 'Place of Much Ice'.

Have your camera ready for glistening icebergs and semi-submerged glacial ice, which is pure white with undertones of crystalline blue. These sculpted ice blocks are some of Arctic nature’s finest creations.

Few people venture into this remote fjord, making it even more special to spend the day exploring here. The Expedition Team will select places to venture ashore, where you will enjoy beautiful scenery on a nature walk. You could also head out in boats to scout for wildlife.

greenland boat cruises

Fascinating Maniitsoq

Today our expedition cruise reaches Maniitsoq. Nicknamed the 'Venice of Greenland' for its natural canals, the surrounding mountains deliver awe-inspiring views. You might even spot pods of humpback whales from shore.

Once a regional hub for trading reindeer hides, people have lived here for 4,000 years. Discover figurines carved from walrus ivory, traditional Greenlandic costumes, and many works of art in the local museum.

Maniitsoq has many hiking options with different viewpoints to discover. And don’t miss the chance to chat to the town's welcoming locals.

greenland boat cruises

Spectacular Sisimiut

We reach spectacularly situated Sisimiut, just 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle, where you'll experience the Midnight Sun at the height of summer.

Old traditions are alive and well here, and you can learn more about the ancient Saqqaq artifacts in the local museum. If you're looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat or mittens made of qiviut, the inner wool of a musk ox, said to be 10 times warmer than sheep wool.

One of the best things you'll experience on your expedition cruise to Greenland with us is meeting the local communities in the places we explore—authentic interactions that make for fantastic memories.

greenland boat cruises

UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord

Our expedition cruise reaches Disko Bay, a haven for whales and seals. The Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, regularly tops the list of things to see and do in Greenland. Today, you'll find out why. Enjoy breathtaking scenery as you walk to the ice fjord and the old Inuit settlement of Sermermiut.

Marvel at giant icebergs floating past in the deep blue waters, as they take on different hues of white, grey, and blue. Even amateur photographers will return to the ship with enviable images. Back in pretty Ilulissat, enjoy a hot drink by the colorful houses along the water.

greenland boat cruises

Go wild in Vaigat Sound

The rugged Vaigat Sound is our northernmost point. You may feel like the first person to explore it. We are at the hands of Mother Nature today and the Expedition Team will identify the best landing sites to explore.

If possible, we’ll take small boats (RIB) out for a shore landing or take an optional kayaking trip between icebergs. You may visit Camp Frieda, trek across the tundra, and get up close to a glacier and learn how it moves.

Have your binoculars and camera ready as wildlife sightings in Disko Bay can include orcas and bowhead whales, as well as harp, hooded, bearded, and ringed seals.

greenland boat cruises

Beguiling Evighedsfjord

Our expedition cruise now heads back south. Enjoy a day of exploration in the magical and imposing Evighedsfjord, near Kangerlussuaq. Until that day, we won’t have determined the exciting adventures that lie in store for you.

The 'Fjord of Eternity' is fed by an ice cap that calves huge icebergs into its waters, 2,300 ft deep. It is surrounded by misty mountains with beautiful white ridges, punctuated by crystal-blue ice caves.

Nature reigns here. The only settlements in this region are tiny fishing villages clinging to the shores. Like always, we'll be on the lookout for Arctic flora and wildlife, including whales and seabirds.

greenland boat cruises

Nuuk, Greenland’s capital

After several days exploring remote, idyllic icescapes, you’ll cruise into Nuuk, Greenland’s colorful capital. It has a population of 18,000 people and a striking mix of old and new buildings.

Compare the old buildings like the Hans Egede House and Nuuk Cathedral with the ultra-modern architecture of Greenland’s parliament building.

Visit the national museum and gain fascinating insight into life here 500 years ago. See the six Qilakitsoq mummies, or join a long nature walk through Paradise Valley and around Mt. Lille Malene as part of an optional excursion.

greenland boat cruises

Forgotten town

As you wander around the abandoned ruins of this ghost town, it’s hard to believe that Ivittuut, a former mining outpost, once played a pivotal role in the course of history.

During World War II, the US secretly stationed troops here to prevent rare cryolite, used to make aluminum alloys, from falling into enemy hands. Supplies were instead shipped to the UK to manufacture aircraft that fought in the Battle of Britain.

Here, you can walk among the area's deserted buildings. In what was once the last Viking settlement in Greenland, the only inhabitants you’re likely to see nowadays are musk oxen.

greenland boat cruises

Prince Christian Sund

We aim to explore the incredible waters of Prince Christian Sound, stretching 60 miles long. Sharp-peaked granite mountains provide a stunning contrast to the bright white glaciers. Look out for calving icebergs and colorful houses in the village of Aappilattoq.

Nature is abundant here. Keep an eye out for ringed and bearded seals resting on the ice and glaucous gulls and black guillemots soaring above. You may even spot minke and humpback whales.

If sea ice prevents us from entering the sound, we'll head to the jagged Cape Farewell, the southernmost point of Greenland.

Nuuk cruise port

Region Iceland - Greenland - Faroe Islands

Local Time 2024-03-26 02:16

Port Nuuk cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Nuuk, Greenland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Nuuk is Greenland's capital city and largest port located on the country's southwestern coast. Nuuk is also the homeport ( ferry port) for Arctic Umiaq Line (freight and passenger shipping company) serving the south-western Greenland route roundtrip from Nuuk.

Next are listed route's ports of call (with arrival-departure times in brackets) - Nuuk (departure 8 pm)- Maniitsoq (6-630 am)- Kangaamiut (10-10:15 am)- Sisimiut (5-7 pm)- Aasiaat (6-6:15 am)-Qeqertarsuaq (10-10:15 am)- Ilulissat (3:30-5 pm)-Aasiaat (9:30-10 pm)-Sisimiut (9-11 am)-Kangaamiut (5:45-6 pm)-Maniitsoq (9:30-10 pm)-Nuuk (7-9 am)-Qeqertarsuatsiaat (4:30-4:45 pm)- Paamiut (11:45-12 midnight)-Arsuk (6:45-7 am)- Qaqortoq (4-7 pm)- Narsaq (9:9:30 pm)-Arsuk (6:45-7 am)-Paamiut (2-2:30 pm)-Qeqertarsuatsiaat (10:15-10:30 pm)-Nuuk (arrival 7:30 am).

Formerly known as Godthab (Good Hope), the town was founded in 1721 as the largest Danish settlement in the region. Nuuk boasts an ice-free harbour (located on the Davis Strait) and extensive commercial fishing industry. Travelers should visit the old Koloniehavn district and the National Museum. Nearby is the mountain landmark Hjortetakken.

From 9th to 15th centuries, Norse colonists maintained precarious existence at Nuuk, but later abandoned their settlement. The Norwegian missionary Hans Egede (1686-1758) established a colony near the original site. Today it's the seat of Supreme Court and the 21-member Parliament (Landsting). Most of Nuuk's contemporary inhabitants are Inuit.

Major cities located closest to Nuuk are Iqaluit (Nunavut Canada), St Johns (Newfoundland Canada) and Reykjavík (Iceland) . Nuuk has almost a 1/4 of Greenland's population (around 18,000), and also has the country's tallest building - Hojhus Jagtvej (Nord and Syd) - 12 floors, height ~43 m (141 ft).

The city is a good shopping place for buying high-quality handmade arts and craftworks. Its shopping center (Nuuk Center) was opened in 2012 and has the country's first-ever underground car parking. Nuuk Airport is approx 4 km (2,5 mi) to the northeast of downtown. It is served by the domestic airline Air Greenland (also headquartered in the city). Regular flights are operated to and from Reykjavík. As an alternative to the expensive flying of goods from Denmark to Greenland, Nuuk and other towns are connected to Denmark by a cargo shipping line - mainly from Aalborg . Cargo vessels import from Denmark timber, machinery, clothing, flour, medicine, and export deep-freezed fish and shrimp.

The city's Nuup Bussii (yellow buses) provide public bus services. A shuttle service is provided to the airport. Nuuk Tourist Office (1992-built) houses the headquarters of the country's National Tourist Board.

On August 19, MSC Orchestra became MSC 's first cruise liner to visit Greenland. The next table shows the 17-day North Atlantic crossing itinerary from Germany to Iceland.

In 2012 (August 18 through September 12),  MS The World (world's largest privately-owned cruise ship) did a Northwest Passage cruise from USA to Greenland ( Nome Alaska to Nuuk Greenland). The ship was carrying a total of 481 passengers (residents) and crew. During the 26-day voyage, MS The World traveled over 5500 mi (8900 km) following the route of Roald Amundsen  (link to the  Hurtigruten ship), who was the first sailor to complete the voyage in 1906.

Nuuk Greenland was included as port of call in the  Northwest Passage cruises  of the following passenger ships:

  • Crystal Serenity - 32-day itinerary from  Seward Alaska  to  NYC New York  (2016 - August 16 to September 16)
  • Crystal Serenity - 32-day itinerary 32-days Seward to New York City (2017 - August 15 to September 15)
  • Seven Seas Navigator - 63-day itinerary from  Miami Florida  to  Montreal Quebec  (2017 - June 17 to August 18)

Note: All Northwest Passage ship transits are assisted by a Canadian icebreaker or another vessel with an ice-strengthened hull.

'Flightseeing': Get a helicopter tour right from your cruise

S KJOLJUNGEN FJORD, Greenland – Zodiac rides, kayaks, paddleboards and e-bikes have long been part of the activities on expedition cruise ships.

But passengers on high-end ships are now asking for more expensive toys to play with – namely onboard submarines and helicopters.

Seabourn, Viking and Scenic are three cruise lines that recently added submarines to some of their expedition ships. The latter also has onboard helicopters complete with helipads on its two “ultra-luxury yachts” – Scenic Eclipse I and Eclipse II.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Watching the scenery in a remote polar region slowly glide by from a ship’s deck can be captivating. Experiencing it at speeds exceeding 100 mph from the skies above is downright exhilarating.

Indeed, a 30-minute “flightseeing” helicopter ride over a glacier and remote ice sheet in eastern Greenland was one of the highlights of my recent 12-day Arctic cruise on the Scenic Eclipse II, a 220-passenger ship that made its inaugural voyage in April.

Bring the bikini, leave the kids: 4 things to know about sailing with Virgin Voyages

Here's what it costs to take a helicopter ride on a cruise

The Eclipse II’s sister ship, Scenic Eclipse I, debuted in 2019. It has a sub and two helicopters. The Eclipse II also has two helicopters – a sub will be brought on board in October, in time for its Antarctica sailings that begin in early December. The oceangoing ships are two of the newest additions to the Australia-based cruise line’s fleet, which also includes 15 riverboats.

Scenic bills itself as offering its passengers “all-inclusive luxury.” Sightseeing tours, all specialty restaurants, drinks, gratuities and airport transfers are included in the fare, which can exceed $1,000 per person per day, depending on the itinerary and choice of cabin.

Submarine and helicopter rides are optional add-ons that cost more. A lot more.

A half-hour helicopter ride costs $795 per person. Sub rides cost $350-$795, depending on the region and if it’s a 20- or 40-minute dive.

Despite the hefty price tag, Jason Flesher, Scenic’s director of Discovery Operations, says the helicopters and subs have proven to be “extremely popular” with passengers.

“We have many guests fly and dive multiple times during their voyage,” he says, adding that the excursions “give our guests the full perspective of their surroundings.”

Over half of the ship’s 140 passengers signed up for helicopter rides on my sailing. Our pilot, Pascal Fischer, told me that on Antarctic sailings, the percentage of passengers taking helicopter rides usually hovers around 80%.

“You can go 20 miles from the ship, and the world looks totally different, especially in places we go like the Arctic and Antarctica,” says Fischer. “You may even see places that no human ever saw before because we are in such remote areas.”

Exploring Greenland by cruise ship and helicopter

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a semiautonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It’s three times the size of Texas, yet its population is only 56,000, making it the least densely populated territory in the world.

You can’t get much more remote than eastern Greenland, where few cruise ships go, and there are only a handful of tiny fishing settlements. We saw no other signs of human civilization during our four days exploring that region.  However, we did see plenty of blue and humpback whales, seals and other marine life.

On the gloriously sunny 50-degree day of my helicopter ride, the Eclipse II was anchored in the Skjoljungen Fjord in southeastern Greenland. I walked up to the ship’s helipad at the stern on Deck 8 – one floor above where I had eaten breakfast that morning in the Yacht Club restaurant – for a 10-minute safety briefing.

Three fellow passengers and I were fitted with lifejackets and given noise-canceling headphones so we could hear Fischer’s descriptions of what we would be seeing during the flight. We were then escorted to one of the Eclipse II’s two $3.5 million Airbus H130 helicopters. Each helicopter can carry a maximum of six passengers and a pilot. I was in the middle seat but still enjoyed unobstructed views of the remote landscape.

We flew over the magnificent Thrym Glacier and then banked west between jagged peaks for a look at Greenland’s pristine ice sheet, which covers about 80 percent of the territory. With the noise-canceling headphones, the 40-mile trip was surprisingly tranquil and smooth. Never have 30 minutes passed by so quickly.

As we landed back on the ship’s helipad, I wondered why the Eclipse II needs two helicopters instead of just one.  Fischer explained it’s primarily for safety reasons.

53 days at sea: You can spend two months exploring Japan, more for $8K on this cruise

“It could be you get a warning light that tells you you have to land now. And then you land. So we have a second helicopter that can pick up the passengers and bring them back to the ship,” says Fischer, who has been flying helicopters for 25 years, including seven years as an air ambulance pilot in Arizona.

Additionally, the second helicopter helps ensure that every passenger who wants to fly has the opportunity. On a busy day – when the weather conditions are ideal for flying – Fischer says the two choppers can carry up to 96 people.

“Normally, we are able to fly everyone who wants to go, unless we have a cruise that lasts 10 days, and we just have 10 days of bad weather,” says Fischer. “It’s not often that we aren’t able to fly everyone who wants to fly.”

As helicopters are so new on ships, the cruise lines are still figuring out how best to integrate them with on-land activities. For instance, Scenic recently started offering excursions that take passengers on helicopter rides to go skiing, hiking, fishing, or – in Mediterranean ports – play a round of golf.

A helicopter excursion in Antarctica takes passengers to see 5,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins on Snow Hill Island – a spot only accessible by helicopter.

Some cruises also offer submarine rides

Scenic’s two submarines, named Neptune I and Neptune II, carry six to eight passengers plus a pilot. The U-Boat Worx sub on the Eclipse I is capable of submerging 984 feet, although it typically dives only about one-third of that depth for safety reasons and a better viewing experience.

The Eclipse II will have a Triton sub, capable of submerging 600 feet. The cruise line says the battery-powered subs don’t emit hazardous substances and pose no danger to aquatic life.

Fittingly, the Eclipse II was christened in June by Kathy Sullivan, a geologist and oceanographer who was the first American woman to complete a spacewalk for NASA. She’s also traveled to the deepest depths of the ocean, earning her the title “World’s Most Vertical Person.”

We started the cruise in Reykjavik, Iceland, the world’s northernmost capital city, before sailing across the Denmark Strait to the southeastern coast of Greenland.

Four days were spent exploring the region’s many fjords, glaciers and icebergs up close on eight-passenger Zodiacs driven by members of the ship’s 17-person expedition team, consisting of naturalists, botanists, marine biologists and a historian. The Eclipse II then transited the Prince Christian Sound in southern Greenland before cruising along the territory’s west coast. There, we visited Nuuk, Greenland’s largest town (population 20,000).

All told, we covered 2,600 miles during the voyage.

It’s not easy to get to Greenland as there are no direct flights to/from North America. To get home at the end of the cruise, we took a four-hour Air Greenland flight from Kangerlussuaq Airport to Copenhagen for an overnight hotel stay before flying home to the U.S. the following day.

Needless to say, while the jets that took us home flew much higher and faster, they couldn’t come close to matching the thrill and excitement of a helicopter ride over one of the most remote places on the planet.

Cruise Passenger, 23, Reportedly Falls Overboard After Texting Wife He Felt Seasick

Jazmin Tolliver

Trends Reporter, HuffPost

greenland boat cruises

A 23-year-old passenger is presumed dead after falling from the MSC Euribia cruise ship, according to multiple reports .

Liam Jones, a social work student from Scotland, was last seen on March 16 while on a seven-day tour cruise from Southampton to Amsterdam with his family, the Daily Record reports .

Jones’ wife, Sophia Mcphee, 20, told the outlet that Jones texted her right before his disappearance to tell her he was feeling seasick.

“He’s just gone. I’m never going to see him again,” Mcphee told the Daily Record . “I’m devastated. I have so many questions, and I’m not getting any answers to what’s happened.”

Mcphee told U.K.’s Metro that Jones’ sister broke the news to her on the phone and explained that security camera footage showed Jones falling overboard.

“She said there had been an accident and Liam ‘wasn’t coming back.’ She then said she had seen CCTV and he’d gone overboard,” Mcphee recalled.

But Mcphee said she hasn’t been updated on the investigation since hearing about his disappearance. She told the Daily Record that the last time she had seen Jones was on March 14 when he traveled to visit family in Glasgow before they boarded the cruise the following day.

“I’ve been trying to get in contact with the MSC since Monday, but it’s been a headache,” Mcphee told the Daily Record. “They’re not getting back to me.”

MSC Cruises didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment.

Police reportedly boarded the cruise ship on March 22 to investigate the incident upon its return to Southampton, Metro reports.

The cruise line suspects the man intentionally went overboard, Fox10 News reports .

In a statement to the Daily Record, MSC Cruises said it is “deeply saddened” by the news of Jones’ disappearance.

“A passenger on board MSC Euribia was reported missing, who we believe intentionally went overboard, on 17 March as the ship sailed from Hamburg to Rotterdam,” the cruise line said.

“The authorities have been informed and have been on board the vessel. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time,” the statement continued. “Out of respect for the family’s privacy we will refrain from disclosing any additional information.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

greenland boat cruises

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

greenland boat cruises

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

greenland boat cruises

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

greenland boat cruises

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

greenland boat cruises

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

greenland boat cruises

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Princess Cruises® now sets sail from Boston with seven-day cruises to Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, and Portland. And if a more extended escape is what you crave, hop on one of Princess’ 10-day voyages from Boston to Quebec City, Canada, with stops in Saint John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Saguenay, and an overnight stay in charming Québec City. But that's not all—for those looking for an unparalleled adventure, Princess is offering a 17-day odyssey to Greenland, a land of towering glaciers, magnificent fjords, and authentic local experiences. With a variety of Canada and New England itineraries to choose from, get ready for an escape as epic as the memories you’ll carry home.

A wicked awesome city

Boston—a city that's not only a history aficionado’s dream but also a seafood lover's paradise and an outdoor enthusiast's playground—is the ultimate opening act to your blockbuster cruise. With its blend of historic allure and modern pizzazz, trust us, this city is wicked awesome.

Kick things off by following the historic Freedom Trail. Visit the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum for a dose of revolutionary excitement, then switch gears with a trip to the Institute of Contemporary Art for a modern twist. Get your taste buds ready for lobster roll taste-testing at iconic spots like Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Need a breather? Boston Common, the oldest park in America, is the perfect place for relaxation.

Cape Elizabeth in Maine

Iconic coastlines and more

Welcome to your Canada and New England adventure, where rocky coastlines, colonial history, and fresh seafood create the perfect recipe for an unforgettable vacation. Cruise from Boston, New York, Ft. Lauderdale, or Québec City, and embark on a journey where beauty surrounds you by sea and land alike. And for fall foliage enthusiasts, don't miss the chance to set sail in autumn, where you'll be treated to the breathtaking spectacle of leaves turning rich hues of red, purple, orange, and yellow. In these enchanting seaside towns adorned with picturesque lighthouses, a bygone era comes vividly to life.

Peggy's Cove's lighthouse

Follow the footsteps of history

First stop, historic cities that breathe life into America's roots. Tour Boston’s Historic Faneuil Hall, the site of famous speeches by prominent figures like Samuel Adams. In Lexington and Concord, visit the famous North Bridge where “the shot heard ‘round the world” began the American Revolution, and commemorate the influence these two towns had on America’s quest for liberty. New York City awaits, promising non-stop entertainment and a warm Statue of Liberty welcome. Travel back to the Gilded Age in Newport, RI where history and elegance collide. Charlottetown is a reader's paradise, especially if you're a fan of Anne of Green Gables. Cruise through Eastern Canada, savoring the French flair of Nova Scotia's coastal villages and the charm of Québec City's Rue St. Louis. The city’s cobblestone streets and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Old Québec, give you a taste of Europe without the jet lag. Iconic sights like Peggy's Cove's lighthouse and Saint John's historic churches are also must-sees.

Seafood

And don’t forget the seafood

Now, let’s talk seafood. Dine like a New Englander by slurping a bowl of clam “chowdah,” savoring fresh crab cakes, or indulging in the sweetness of Maine blueberries. Cruise and chew your way through local dishes and delicacies for a taste of the region’s best flavors.

Not your grandma’s history lesson

Get ready to step into the pages of history with Princess’ American Heritage itineraries that'll have your heart pounding like a field drum. This isn’t your grandma’s history lesson; this is a time-traveling adventure more immersive than a Revolutionary War reenactment. Discover the allure of Norfolk, VA, where the captivating waterfront, lively cultural offerings, and the opportunity to explore the historic USS Wisconsin battleship await you. From Norfolk, you can make a pit stop in Yorktown, VA—it's not just a dot on the map; it's your gateway to the wonders of Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. And hold onto your tricorn hat because the excitement doesn't stop there. Charleston, Boston, and Halifax are on the lineup, offering up 10- and 11-day historical excursions.

Voyage through the chapters of American history

If you're itching to delve even deeper into the roots of this great nation, Princess presents their Historic America cruisetour. Spend seven nights on land uncovering the treasures of Washington D.C., Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate, Colonial Williamsburg, and the legendary Gettysburg Battlefield. In Philadelphia, visit Independence Hall, ring the Liberty Bell, and stand where Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence. It's more than an experience; it’s a voyage through history.

Mist and marvels in Canada

For mist, marvels, and a delicious dose of Canadian history, you’re going to be captivated by Princess’ Maple Explorer cruisetour . Sail into the thunderous mist of Niagara Falls, where nature puts on a show like no other. Get drenched in the thrill of the falls before embarking on a historic journey through Canada's gems. First stop—Old Québec, the original walled city in North America. Walk its cobblestone streets, and you'll practically hear the whispers of the past echoing around you. This city's got stories, and it's ready to spill them.

Making waves in the Arctic

Princess is making big moves with its exclusive sailings to the coolest spot on the map—Greenland! As the only cruise line offering itineraries that explore multiple towns on the island, Princess is charting new waters with these unforgettable journeys. And trust us, the world's largest island is remote, rich, and ready to wow you. Departing from Boston, board Emerald Princess® for a unique, 17-day-long expedition that marries the best of the East Coast with three day-long visits to jaw-dropping ports in Greenland. Qaqortoq serves up scenic fjords that'll make your jaw drop even further. Nuuk is like stepping into a fairytale with storybook cottages straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. And Nanortalik? It's a stroll through fields so colorful, that even rainbows would be jealous. With opportunities to view massive glaciers, experience vibrant culture, and do some out-of-this-world sightseeing, think of it as a love affair with nature that'll make all of your other vacations green with envy!
