Allianz Travel Insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance, an insurer that operates in 35 countries and serves 40 million customers in the U.S. The company offers several types of travel insurance plans depending on your needs.

Travel insurance will help protect you if unexpected events affect your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive plan or emergency medical coverage only to supplement the travel insurance you have from your credit cards , Allianz Global Assistance offers plenty of options.

Allianz trip insurance plans fall into two categories: single trip and annual/multi-trip plans. We evaluated several single trip and annual/multi-trip plans to help you figure out which policy makes sense for you.

Depending on what type of coverage you’re looking for, Allianz offers several different travel insurance options. Allianz’s plan choices fall under single trip or annual/multi-trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

Annual/multi-trip plans are designed for those who like to take a lot of little trips throughout the year as well as for business travelers. Because the coverage period is longer, these plans are more expensive.

Some of these plans include medical coverage only while others also provide more comprehensive travel insurance perks. There’s coverage for business equipment as these plans are geared toward work travelers.

Allianz offers five travel insurance plans for single trips, including a plan that's mainly focused on emergency medical coverage.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan is geared toward domestic travelers who are looking for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage but don't need post-departure benefits like emergency medical or baggage loss. This plan is Allianz’s most affordable option.

OneTrip Basic, Prime and Premier are three comprehensive travel insurance plans.

OneTrip Basic is the most economical plan and offers trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits along with emergency medical and baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime provides all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher limits, a few extra coverage areas and complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier offers the most coverage, doubling almost every post-departure limit of the Prime plan with more covered cancellation reasons.

If you don't need pre-departure trip cancellation and interruption protections or you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , the standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a good choice. The plan mainly provides emergency medical protections along with some baggage loss/delay benefits.

Allianz single-trip plan cost

Here's a look at the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy for a one-week, $1,500 vacation to Croatia in August 2020 taken by a 30-year-old from Texas.

allianz travel insurance australia reviews

The OneTrip Premier is the most expensive plan and provides the highest level of protection, especially for emergency medical events.

However, if you’re OK with lower limits on emergency medical, a OneTrip Prime or Basic plan could be a more appropriate choice. These costs represent a range of 3.4%-7.5% of the total cost of the trip, which is in line with typical costs of 4%-8%, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association.

Allianz offers four different annual/multi-trip plans.

AllTrips Basic is suitable for those who would like emergency medical coverage while abroad but don't need trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The AllTrips Prime, Executive and Premier plans provide an entire year of comprehensive travel insurance benefits.

The Executive and Premier plans offer various levels of trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The Executive plan is specifically designed for business travelers since it offers protection for business equipment.

Allianz annual/multi-trip plans cost

Let's look at an example of an annual Allianz travel insurance plan that starts in July 2020 for a 50-year-old from Illinois.

allianz travel insurance australia reviews

Coverage under these plans is offered for trips up to 45 days in length.

The AllTrips Executive plan costs significantly more than the other plans; this is mainly due to higher trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical and business equipment protections. The Executive coverage amount for trip cancellation can be increased beyond what is quoted here, driving that plan's price up to as much as $785.

If you’re not concerned with pre-trip cancellation benefits and don’t need the increased level of medical coverage, the Basic plan is the most affordable option.

For trips longer than 45 days, the AllTrips Premier plan might be a better choice as it offers coverage for up to 90 days. Using the same search parameters but with 90 days of coverage per trip, the cost of the annual plan is $475.

Choosing the right plan for your trip involves understanding what type of coverage you will want while you’re abroad.

If you’re going on a trip and returning home: OneTrip Prime, Basic or Premier are good options to choose from while offering different levels of coverage.

If you’ll be going on multiple and longer trips: the AllTrips Premier plan might be best as it provides insurance benefits for trips up to 90 days in length. The remaining three annual AllTrips plans cover multiple trips, up to 45 days.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so you may not need a plan that offers all the same coverage. In this case, getting the OneTrip Medical plan might be enough.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate, you don’t have credit card coverage or you didn’t pay for your trip with that credit card: In these instances, it's best to choose a comprehensive plan depending on how much coverage you need and for how long. Consider one of the single trip or multi-trip plans.

Travel insurance plans have a lot of exclusions that you need to pay attention to so you know exactly what type of coverage you’re getting. Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

High-risk activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other types of high-risk sporting activities that the insurer deems unsafe.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from intoxication, drug use, self-harm and criminal activity.

Specifically designated events: Epidemics, natural disasters and war are specifically mentioned in the policy as exclusions.

It's important to note that exclusions may vary based on the policy and where you live, so it's always best to review the fine print to ensure you’re clear about what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz has been offering insurance for more than 25 years. The company is well established and offers numerous single and annual travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer a wide array of benefits including (but not limited to): coronavirus-related coverage, trip cancellation, interruption, emergency medical coverage and transportation, baggage loss/damage, baggage delay, travel delay, change fee coverage, loyalty program redeposit fees, 24-hour assistance and many more benefits. Each plan is different, so you’ll want to look at the specific plans you’re considering to know exactly which benefits you’ll receive.

No, Allianz doesn't offer the Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade. Review the policy details of the Allianz plan you’re considering to ensure you’re comfortable with the list of covered reasons. For example, the loss of a job can be considered a covered reason, but wanting to cancel a trip because you’re afraid to travel isn't.

Most often, you will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In other instances (e.g., covered baggage delay), the insurer will pay you a fixed amount per day and you won’t need to submit receipts.

Allianz Global Assistance offers several good travel insurance plans to choose from. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan for a vacation, a single-trip plan is your best bet.

If you’re a frequent traveler or take lots of business trips, a multi-trip plan could be the way to go. If you have a travel credit card, look at what travel insurance benefits you may already have so you don’t duplicate your coverage .

Filing on line was efficient

Filing on line was efficient and I even learned different ways to download required items. I received an email within 2 hours letting me know two more documents were required. The next day our claim had been approved and payment within 4 days. I had to file a claim during the pandemic with another handler, it was an ordeal every step of the way.

Friendly and Quick

I tested positive for Covid three days before my flight was scheduled to depart. The process and sequence of events was a bit confusing, but the online chat connected me with real people who were kind and helpful through my ordeal. My claim was approved within a week to cover the cost to rebook, and I'm set to go later this spring.

Bad Weather, Event Delayed!

When our event was delayed due to weather and had to book hotel for another night, pay additional charges for return travel to be rescheduled etc. I was able to submit the claim hassle free online immediately. It took only minutes. My claim was paid less then 5 business days! that is awesome customer service!!

Flight delay

We encountered a flight delay due to an American Airlines gate malfunction and we were stuck in Chicago O’Hare for a day. Allianz Global came through with a lodging reimbursement for the missed day at our destination and for a meal expense. The claims process was easy.

I had bought tickets to see katt…

I had bought tickets to see katt williams and my dad was admitted up into the hospital a week before the event for heart failure, this was the first time I had ever purchased ins on tickets for an event. I called to ask what I needed to do to file a claim and the gentleman walked me through. I was genuinely surprised at how easy it was and how fat I received my refund. Would highly recommend and definitely will be using in the future.

Will not regret the purchase!

So glad we went with this company for our travel insurance! We purchased this for a cruise we had, at the end of the vacation the cruise port workers broke my luggage, the wheels were torn off and there was a huge Crack down the middle. I filed a claim with the insurance company, in 2 days it was approved and in a week my check was in the mail! Great communication and great coverage. Will definitely purchase again for future travel plans!

Allianz Travel Insurance Coming in Handy

I've been using Allianz travel insurance for at least two years and each time I've purchased insurance for my trips, I never had to use it. I travel a lot and was concerned there may be a time where I would not be able to make a trip due to unforeseen circumstances...well, that time finally came. Allianz thankfully came through! I couldn't make a trip due to an injury. I was able to file a claim via their website and gather all the required documents needed for the claim. Within a couple weeks, they reviewed my claim and refunded me for my trip! Knowing how quick and convenient the claim process is, I will likely continue using their travel insurance and I'd recommend for others to use too.

Dear Valued Customer, We appreciate your feedback and are delighted to know you are protected by our travel insurance. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we look forward to serving you again soon. Sincerely, Stacey Social Care USA

Ease of signup and claim

Pricing the policy was straightforward, with options clear. As it happened, we had to file a claim for a delay and that was also not complicated. I was able to do all this on line with acknowledgment, claim number and payment all provided quickly. We are big fans of Allianz, have used them often and this experience reminded us why.

Allianz is pretty impressive

Allianz is pretty impressive, they are fast, fair and they cover what they say they will cover. All in all I will continue to use Allianz for my travel insurance needs. They really have impressed me with how quick, fair and honorable they are, which is not always the case with travel insurance companies. When I had to explain the details of a situation, they actually paid attention and considered the facts. Again, impressive.

Date of experience : 13 February 2024

You honored my request for a refund

You honored my request for a refund. You showed respect and empathy for me, an honest customer who is down on his luck. I didn’t anticipate using my Allianz coverage, but was glad I did, and that’s because of you- a responsible, sympathetic company with integrity. And you executed it quickly. Thank you, Allianz! I will tell all my friends and family that you are the greatest!

Easy claim experience

The website made it very easy to submit the documentation on my claim and it was approved in less than 10 business days. This was the second time that we missed ports on our cruises and both claims were approved seamlessly.

We look forward to protecting your travels again soon! Sincerely, Stacey Social Care USA

I bought an annual policy and it was…fantastic!

I bought an annual policy and it was super easy to file a claim when I got sick and couldn’t make the drive for a trip. It was also surprisingly fast. I paid for the peace of mind and hoped to never need it, but it’s good to know that IF you do, getting your claim filed and processed isn’t like pulling teeth.

Do yourself a favor and get this!!

I have fibromyalgia, often going out is difficult for me. I was unable to attend an event I had purchased tickets for a month in advance. THANKFULLY I had purchased the insurance through Allianz!! They were able to refund my money for me very quickly and very easily!! I would ABSOLUTELY recommend everyone get this for your tickets!! You never know what life will throw at you or when!!

Dear Elizabeth, Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are thrilled to hear that you have positive things to say about Allianz Partners. If you are attending another future event, please let us know and we would be happy to provide protection. Sincerely, Stacey Social Care USA

First time using travel insurance, glad I did.

I was leary about paying for travel insurance but glad I did as the unexpected trip delay happened and it was easy to submit a claim. They responded quickly and refunded all travel expenses. Very pleased.

I purchased insurance for a concert

I purchased insurance for a concert, but had to cancel the concert because of a medical issue. I contacted Alllianz and filled out the claim online. When I called to enquire about the claim the person I spoke to was short and unhelpful. The second person I spoke to was very helpful and explained the review process. Allianz refunded me money for one ticket, but I had purchased two.

Date of experience : 15 February 2024

My reason for wanting a refund should…

My reason for wanting a refund should not be determined by what your company thinks is a valid reason. I pay for a service that does not fulfill what it advertise. I can say going forward I will not use or purchase anything from this company and I'll be sure to inform others of this scam.

Date of experience : 19 February 2024

Allianz was very responsive.

Allianz was very responsive. I would say that uploading files to the website was sometimes awkward. I had to upload some files several times, and then had to call to make sure you received them.

I purchased tickets to see Katt Williams and was unable to attend. I purchased the insurance thinking ahead for any unforeseen event. I guess I should have read the FINE PRINT! I’ve had the hardest time trying to get refunded for mine and my fiancés tickets! I’m not sure if anyone else can but I most certainly can’t afford to give away almost $400

Allianz Travel Insurance Reviews

Allianz travel insurance holds 3.9 out of 5 stars from more than 30,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Many satisfied customers report that the claims process is simple and supportive when unforeseen circumstances occur. Among negative reviews, customers mention confusion regarding documents required for submission. In most cases, Allianz responds with offers of further assistance.

Below are some examples of positive and negative company reviews on Trustpilot.

“ Great experience. I absolutely will be using again. We had an issue that made us miss our train and we had to book a (more expensive) bus to our destination and I was reimbursed within a week of submitting the claim. As long as you submit ALL papers that even remotely relate to your situation (receipts, emails about cancellations, everything) you will be good if anything happens.” —T. Wilder via Trustpilot “ I’ve insured with Allianz for years in terms of vacation or short term vehicle rental insurance. One never knows how good insurance is until actually used. I’ve had one windshield claim for a vehicle rental with Allianz which went very smoothly.” —John S. via Trustpilotg “ Part of my claim was handled quickly. My medical claim is still under review...I've been asked twice for the same documentation and uploaded both times and haven't heard anything.” —Melissa G. via Trustpilot “ I had to submit and resubmit three times. I was instructed differently on which documents were required to submit, making the process infinitely more confusing. On top of that, the estimated dates I was given for processing of my documents was generous. It took a few days, minimum, to get any kind of response back. Would not recommend and will not be using again. The only benefit is phone service was not busy so got through to someone fairly quickly.” —Eve B. via Trustpilot

  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Table updated May 2023

Allianz’s policies have a general exclusion against epidemics and pandemics with a few exceptions for specific benefits. Here’s what you can expect to be covered for:

  • Pre-trip and on-trip cancellation costs if you or your travelling companion are diagnosed
  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses if you are diagnosed while on your trip
  • Additional expenses including accommodation and travel costs
  • Medical or hospital expenses while cruising including ship-to-shore evacuation cover (if Cruise Pack is purchased)

On top of Allianz’s COVID-19 coverage, you could be up for a partial refund of your insurance premium if you need to cancel or shorten your trip due to a COVID-19 mandatory quarantine period or border closure.

There are some scenarios that are not covered and you should review the Allianz Travel Insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) before deciding on whether this cover meets your needs.

If Allianz’s COVID-19 cover doesn’t quite make the cut, we’ve compared all the providers that offer cover for COVID-19 here .

Allianz travel insurance offers five levels of cover: Comprehensive, Basic, Domestic and Multi-Trip. Each of these can be purchased for a single traveller, a couple or an entire family. Allianz also offers a Non-Medical plan which can cover one insured person.

Allianz travel insurance is underwritten by Allianz.

It comes with a cooling-off period of 14 days which allows you to you cancel your policy if you change your mind and receive a full refund. You also have your choice of base excess that applies when claiming for an insured event . An excess is an amount you must first pay towards a claim, and you can lower the cost of your policy by selecting a higher excess.

These are some of the features and benefits that are included in Allianz travel insurance policies. Some of these inclusions only apply to certain levels of cover (e.g. Comprehensive vs the Basic plan ).

  • Accidental death or disabililty
  • Additional accommodation or travel expenses
  • Alternative transport expenses
  • Cancellation costs
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses
  • Rental vehicle excess
  • Personal liability
  • Travel delay expenses

Along with Allianz’s four levels of cover, you’ve got further flexibility through its add-on packs. These packs let you tailor your policy with extra cover by paying an additional premium.

  • Adventure pack. If you’re planning something adventurous that’s not automatically covered, you can add cover for a selection of riskier sports and activities such as abseiling, outdoor rock climbing and hiking.
  • Cruise pack. Extend your cover to also include any claims related to cruise travel , including evacuation cover, cabin confinement and pre-paid shore excursion cancellation.
  • Increase item limits cover. Travelling with high-value items? Get a higher limit on your cover for the loss, theft or accidental damage to, luggage and personal effects than the one your chosen plan offers.
  • Snow pack. Cover for snow sport activities - including emergency rescue, hire as well as your own snow sport equipment, piste closure, bad weather closure and more.

All travel insurance providers have some exclusions built into their policies and they’re usually pretty similar. This is the one part of your policy documents that you’ll want to pay close attention to, however, as it’s why a fair chunk of travellers wanting to claim , get rejected. Here are a few key things Allianz won't cover you for:

  • Travelling when you know you are unfit or against medical advice
  • A pre-existing medical condition not approved by Allianz
  • Self-harm, suicide, or attempted suicide
  • Diving alone
  • Ignoring safety warnings
  • You being affected by any intoxicating drug or liquor to the extent that your physical, or mental functions, or your judgement are impaired
  • Participating in professional sport of any kind
  • Pregnancy after the start of the 24th week
  • Driving or riding a vehicle as the driver unless you hold the appropriate class of licence
  • Elective surgery or treatment

Make sure you review Allianz’s PDS for a full rundown of what isn't covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

You can email Allianz at [email protected] to request a claim form.

Alternatively, you can submit a claim online by following these steps:

  • Head to https://claimmanager.com.au/aga/agreement
  • Enter your full name, date of birth and policy number to log in
  • Describe your trip and the incident you’re claiming for
  • Upload any supporting documents relevant to your claim
  • Submit the claim, and you should hear back within 10 business days

Allianz is considered a global leader in insurance and its policies cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip. Unlimited overseas medical and hospital expenses and up to $5,000,000 for personal liability cover put Allianz at the top of the pack when it comes to peace of mind on your trip. Plus, its flexible cancellation cover lets you choose how much you’ll actually need without forcing you to pay for unnecessary cover.

The insurer isn’t for everyone, though. Allianz considers pregnancy a pre-existing condition which means you’ll need to complete a medical assessment. If you’re looking for comprehensive COVID-19 cover, Allianz gets close but there are still a handful of exclusions that might make you think twice.

If you're still not sure about Allianz, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

Can you get a refund for Allianz travel insurance?

Yes, Allianz has a 14-day cooling-off period so if you change your mind, you can get a full refund on the premium paid.

Does travel insurance cover trip cancellation for any reason?

Cancellation cover usually kicks in when you need to cancel your trip because of circumstances that are outside your control. Travel insurance won’t cover you if you simply change your mind.

How do I contact Allianz?

For emergency assistance, you can contact Allianz Global Assistance at +61 7 3305 7499 or 1800 010 075 within Australia. For other enquiries, you can reach its customer service line on 13 1000.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Allianz Travel Insurance

Terrible service.

Purchased international travel, had to cancel for life threatening medical, was not till December. They refuse to reimburse the full deposit. I will not recommend this Company at all. This insurance was part of the ANZ credit card !

Allianz Comprehensive Cover

Best for international students & travellers.

Very helpful in all format

Poor customer service and slow response time.

It is so difficult to contact them. You have to spend more than one hour waiting. They do not provide a reference number so you will have to call them several times to make a follow up. It took more than two months for a refund to be resolved. And they do not have an easy system to make complaints.

Great value.

The Allianz travel insurance quote was very easy to do online as an individual. They also offered the best value for coverage that I could find.

Decent people and easy to get in touch with

Separated my shoulder in Canada had no dramas getting my claim sorted.

Overall good!

Allianz were overall good, they were difficult when it came to processing my travel insurance claim and there was a lot of back and forth even after evidence was provided but they did approve in the end.

Bunch of thieves.

Be sure you read the fine print. This bunch of thieves chose to "Opt Out" of any and all responsibility because of a "Get out of gaol free" clause that says they don't have to pay for anything in the event of a pandemic ... even when the airline stated that the claim was caused by "a change in their flight operations."

Great security and service.

I felt very assured that if an incident occurred I would be covered and the customer service is fantastic. I use them when I travel.

Bad customer service and difficult claim process.

I bought a travel insurance with Allianz, and I had the right to a claim from it. The process of filing a claim with Allianz has been the most difficult process I have ever experienced. When I called customer service in France, they could not provide someone that spoke English, and the lady eventually just hung up on me without any previous warning. Other geographies were nice but could not help since the insurance was bought in France. Then I submitted the claim online, in what seemed to be a relatively simple process. However, now I am receiving emails with everything in French, and being asked to send the documents to a physical address (instead of having a simple online process). This has been so painstaking, I really don't think it is worth it to buy Allianz insurance, in my experience it is extremely difficult to get compensation even if you are entitled to it.

Stay away from them!

Very good at convincing you they are going to cover everything when you have to buy, not so much at keeping up to their promises. They are an insurance company... and with that I said everything!

Paid up eventually

Whilst the original cover failed to cover me properly for a rental care ERI claim, they eventually paid up after they were forced to by the ACCC - five years later. SO a win I think?

Great travel insurance service.

My phone was shattered when I was overseas and when I came back to Sydney I made a claim. It was so quick and easy and I received the full claim made without any hassle. Very impressed, would definitely get travel insurance with Allianz again.

Be vary careful.

Complimentary cover with my credit card when I paid for my European holiday. Cover specifically states you will not be covered if you travel against government advice. So I cancelled a holiday as advised or recommended by smart traveller. To be told they will not cover my cancellation costs for my holiday. They to re-evaluate there product and disclosure or terms and conditions.

Helpful and good coverage.

Allianz were very helpful when I asked the questions surrounding the coverage of the travel insurance I purchased last year. Helpful and good coverage at a decent price.

Read the fine print.

Had insurance for broadway tickets in June. They canceled the show and closed the city, denied my claim because fear of travel and pandemics were not covered by their insurance. After reading the fine print it turns out nothing was covered. Should have saved the $50. Would not even refund my cost for the insurance let alone the $637 for the show. Very disappointed that Ticketmaster would allow them on their site. This is only the second time in my life I felt compelled to write a bad review. Their customer service was appalling. I warn any and all of my friends and family to read the fine print and see for themselves why Allianz is not for them.

More about Allianz's travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does allianz offer.

Allianz offers a range of travel insurance products, including:

  • Basic travel insurance: Allianz’s basic policy only provides travellers with cover for unlimited overseas health and medical expenses and personal liability up to $2.5 million. The simple package is limited to travellers under the age of 75.
  • Comprehensive travel insurance: this type of travel insurance policy provides you with broader coverage, including overseas health treatment, flight delays, cancelling for any covered reason, lost or stolen luggage and the excess on a rental car. They also cover global medical evacuation assistance if you need to return home due to illness or injury. This policy covers you for a single trip.
  • Domestic travel insurance: Allianz offers a domestic travel insurance policy which specifically covers lost or stolen luggage, personal liability and the unexpected cancellation of your holiday due to a covered event. You’re also covered for the excess on your hire car and any funeral costs if you die while on holiday within Australia.
  • Multi-trip travel insurance: tailored to frequent fliers, this policy provides you coverage for multiple holidays across 12 months. You get the option of domestic or comprehensive travel insurance policies, with the option of covering between 15 and 45 days.

Allianz also offers around-the-clock global assistance to its customers, allowing them to phone day or night if they find themselves in an emergency.

However, before settling on your chosen policy, it’s important to compare with Savvy to ensure you get the best deal before you head off on your long-awaited getaway.

What optional extras are available through Allianz?

Travel insurance doesn't always cover everything and sometimes providers will require you to pay extra if you’re taking part in a particularly risky activity while you’re on holiday. Allianz is no different, offering a few add-on options, including:

  • Snow pack: this is a type of ski policy which covers you for emergency assistance overseas, non-refundable bookings or ski passes if you’re injured or fall ill, the piste is forced to close or bad weather and avalanches shut your ski resort. You must be under 75 years old to purchase this package.
  • Cruise pack: if you’re planning on taking a cruise, you’ll need to purchase this package alongside your standard policy. The cruise pack covers you for unlimited medical treatment, evacuation, cabin confinement and the loss or delay of your formal attire.
  • Adventure pack: Allianz offers this pack on domestic or international holidays. Covered activities under this policy include abseiling, deep-sea fishing, animal handling, motorcycle riding and scuba diving.
  • Increased item limits: if you’re travelling with expensive, valuable items, Allianz allows you to pay extra and increase the claimable limits on single items. This is suitable if you’re taking a camera, laptop or mobile phone on holiday.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through Allianz?

While it's recommended that everyone take out travel insurance before jetting off on holiday, no matter whether you’re flying to Japan or taking a holiday to Denmark , it's important to remember that there may be exclusions to your coverage. Some of the general exclusions on Allianz’s coverage include:

  • Loss of enjoyment
  • Bank charges, such as credit card conversion fees
  • Breaking road rules or driving in a dangerous manner
  • Alcohol or drug-related accidents
  • Knowingly travelling to a war-torn destination
  • Reimbursement of goods seized by foreign governments
  • Travelling against the medical advice of a doctor
  • Death, illness or injury due to an uncovered pre-existing health condition

To be sure your insurance policy adequately protects you, check the Product Disclosure Statement before deciding which policy to purchase. Make sure your travel insurance covers everything you'll need while away.

What we think of Allianz travel insurance

What we like, covid-19 coverage.

Allianz provides cover for COVID-19-related expenses , such as overseas medical expenses or cancellation of your trip if you’re diagnosed. It also provides cover for additional expenses, such as if you need to return home because a loved one has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Competitive personal liability cover

Compared to other travel insurance companies on the market, Allianz offers a competitive claim limit of $5 million for personal liability cover.

Your choice of cancellation cover

With Allianz, you get to choose the maximum amount of coverage for travel cancellations yourself. This will help you access the cover you need should you cancel for any covered reason.

What we don't like

Low luggage claim limits.

Comprehensive policies only allow you to claim up to $10,000 if your luggage or travel documents need to be replaced due to theft or damage, which is considerably lower than some of Allianz’s competitors.

No cover for pet boarding

Unlike some of its rival providers, Allianz doesn’t provide coverage for the additional costs of boarding your dog or cat if your travel plans are delayed.

Limited pre-existing condition coverage

In most cases, it can be tough to get cover for a pre-existing condition if you don’t meet some of Allianz’s stringent criteria. Coverage for pregnant travellers is also severely restricted.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about Allianz travel insurance

Allianz lets you make a claim on your travel insurance online day or night through their website. If you need to make a claim, simply:

  • Head to Allianz’s travel claims website
  • Enter your policy number, full name and date of birth
  • Upload any supporting documents such as medical reports or receipts
  • Submit your claim

Allianz allows you to track your claim through its website. It’s best to wait about ten working days for an outcome and respond to any queries from your provider promptly to avoid holding up the refund process.

Yes – however, you’ll only be automatically covered if you’re expecting one child, are under 24 weeks and have had no prior complications with previous pregnancies. If you are expecting multiple children or had prior childbirth issues, you will need to apply to Allianz for cover and undertake a medical assessment.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to the cost of travel insurance, with how much you pay largely dictated by several factors such as:

  • How long you’re planning to travel
  • The destinations you’re visiting
  • Whether you suffer from any pre-existing conditions
  • If you need any optional extras, such as cruise or adventure sports cover
  • The travel insurance company you choose and the level of coverage you’re prepared to pay for

Single-trip offers you coverage for one trip while multi-trip travel insurance provides you with year-round cover for destinations with a specified amount of travel days (usually between 45 and 90). One-way travel insurance is a policy designed for those who have not booked a return ticket, such as if you’re a backpacker with a one-way flight to New Zealand .

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

I write review here to warn those who still have insurance policy with Allianz. I paid 2K premium fee each year to them for insure my house and they now ask me to find the private contractor to fix the property damage caused by their assessment job. What a joke!!After I read so many negative reviews with Allianz and now I know I am not the only one who face this ridiculous situation. What they have done is destroy your property, make the problem worse and deny your claim.I don’t know how this company will exist. Never return your call, never listen what you said.

Allianz sold me a policy for a one year comprehensive multi trip policy for $ 850 No one could have expected the Pandemic and I held the same idea that an insurance company could within reason exclude such a catastrophic event. What is unusual and very unacceptable is that Allianz through its self owned Agent WORLD CARE offered to reinstate the policy I bought at the end of the Covid Emergency. But this is the sticky part. Although they made the promise to reinstate they 'suddenly' developed a 'niche' where NO new policy existed and therefore my existing policy which the understood to reinstate could no longer exist. This is the conundrum I'd prefer anyone else did not have to face. I have completed the first two legs of my fare away from my departure point which was Johannesburg to Melbourne and now cannot get back without the insurance company stepping n on my side. Instead of taking care to protect the interests of a 69 yo client who has insured many times before without claim, in this instance the Insurer ALLIANZ chose to repudiate the claim on no particular grounds other than they 'ceased offering this product' and instead declined to offer the client an option to recover their flights. This repudiation of responsibility is clearly outrageous.

I once got involved with a hit-and-run accident. So I couldn’t get some informations and all that and no one could even help me out . So the debts were in my head , I had so much bills piled up at that time including my credit cards . I used to live With my friend at that time . I needed a new house and I needed help with my credit score. I had no where to turn to. My credit score was 569, I wanted it a little higher and probably my late payment deleted although most of them I had no idea why they were there because I never opened fake accounts with credit card. I went on internet to search for help on how to fill in my debts and I found Mr Matt the credit expertise who helped me out. We got started with the process with some few questions and a little display of competency as a proof of legitimacy. The good news is that he did all he said he will do (deleted the accounts, erased all the inquiries and eventually raised my score to 795. And I was able to get my loans up and secure new apartment. I would advise not to ever get this insurance. They will not work with you and always point you back in the direction of the company you purchases from. This is how they wash their hands of paying you. I wish I could get the word out more about how bad this company is. The fact that a well know company like ticket Master refers you to them is even worse.

The worst company ever. Do Not join with them. I had a health insurance policy with them once and I was Not happy with their service at all, so i have joined with someone else and quit from Allianz Global Assistant Australia and i have asked for a refund from them(Allianz Global Assistant Australia), because i have already paid to them for the whole year. So after that i have called my new health insurance company to active my new health insurance policy and they asked me, my previous Policy transfer document from my previous health insurance company( Allianz Global Assistant Australia). Then again i have contact Allianz Global Assistant Australia and told them what my new health insurance company asked me and then i asked for the Policy transfer document from Allianz Global Assistant Australia. Hey guys so guess what they have that told me..., The Allianz Global Assistant Australia told me that, in order to release my Policy transfer document, i have to sacrifice my refund and lodge a refund cancelation request and then they(Allianz Global Assistant Australia) will be able to release my Policy transfer document. That is bloody ridiculous. Hey everyone i’m telling you again Do Not join with them(Allianz Global Assistant Australia).

DO NOT BUY A POLICY FROM ALLIANZ. Even when they offer coverage for an event, they have an exclusion clause that allows them to deny the claim. My policy plainly states that we had coverage for being quarantined. My wife and I both were forced to quarantine, and the airline would not allow us to fly. In exclusions Allianz then states they do not cover anything during an epidemic. You better read the exclusions in the policy -- even though they say they offer coverage for specific events they have a massive list of exclusions to prevent them from paying the claim. Brutally HONEST Allianz Travel Insurance Review – [Updated 2024]

Planning and preparing for a trip can be fun and exciting. Personally I love flicking through Lonely Planets seeking out those “Must See” places and I even enjoy scouring through forums for insider advice. I relish the challenge of arranging sophisticated logistics and revel in finding bargain flights from London to the ends of the earth.

Indeed, the feeling I get during the days before I start a trip is both exciting and invigorating. In fact, sometimes I wonder whether I’m equally as addicted to this “state of leaving”  as I am to travel itself – they do say that often anticipation is even better than the event itself.

What is far less exciting though, is comparing Travel Insurance policies. There are far too many policies and providers out there with far too many fine print details to scrutinise. Yep finding the best travel insurance is confusing, and finding cheap backpacker insurance can seem impossible. But, to make finding and buying Travel Insurance that bit easier for you, we have tried, tested and reviewed all of the major providers out there.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Do you need travel insurance, what does travel insurance cover, should i get insurance, who are allianz, allianz travel insurance policies, what’s covered by allianz travel insurance, what’s not covered by allianz travel insurance, who is allianz travel insurance suitable for, who isn’t allianz travel insurance suitable for, how much does allianz travel insurance cost, other travel insurance providers, when should you buy travel insurance, how to make an allianz travel insurance claim, final thoughts on allianz travel insurance.

Today we are going to review Allianz Travel Insurance. I have spent hours going through their policies and breaking them down for you. By the end of this post, you should know whether Allianz is the right travel insurance for you.

It’s important that you take time to look at other good travel insurance providers too. Different providers suit different kinds of travellers. So you may be better suited elsewhere.

allianz travel insurance australia reviews

Before we begin the Allianz Travel Insurance review, do note that the terms and conditions of insurance policies are subject to changes and are always ultimately based on your individual circumstances. Therefore, it is very important that you read any policy terms and conditions yourself.

Hey you there! Before you delve any further or waste any more valuable time on this Allianz Travel Insurance Review, let me just tell you straight up front that we at The Broke Backpacker no longer use Allianz for our travel insurance needs.

We have nothing against them, we just found other providers more suited to the needs of travellers and backpackers whilst offering VERY competitive quotes.

If you are taking a single trip or going backpacking, we recommend World Nomads Insurance .

Alternatively, if you are a digital nomad working and travelling remotely from all over the world, then SafetyWing Insurance offer some very interesting travel insurance plans.

Ahem – Please note that insurance companies change their policies and product terms fairly regularly. We do our best to keep this review up to date but cannot guarantee that all of the information is 100% correct. Therefore, only use this review as a guide and check all policies yourself. Also note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links.

Do you need travel insurance? Does anybody really need travel insurance ?

After shelling out for flights, visas, and a new backpack, having to find a few more bucks for travel insurance may feel a bit depressing. I mean, all you get is a “policy certificate” AKA a boring 100-page booklet to read. Aren’t there more sexy and fun things to be spending that money on?

After all, most trips, vacations, and odysseys end happily and safely without any ill occurrence. There is no definitive answer to this.

travel insurance

Our team at the Broke Backpacker , we have (collectively) spent more than a century backpacking the globe and we have visited over 100 countries. Most of those trips ended without incident. However, we have also clocked up a fair few mishaps along the way: inflected legs, tropical diseases, broken backs, and even gunpoint robberies.

These incidents were all bad enough in themselves, leaving physical and mental scars. Thankfully though, we were all insured at the time. This meant that we were spared the further trauma of paying out thousands in medical bills or replacing technologies.

Basically, insurance is one of those things that most people never actually need. But the ones who do are very lucky to have it.

So now, you get the picture: travel insurance is essential when it comes to staying safe on the road . But is Allianz travel insurance right for you? Or do other travel insurance options suit you?

So let’s take a look. Here are some things good travel insurance plans help with, and where you would be without them.

Lost Luggage

Luggage gets lost both on planes and in airports. It shouldn’t happen, but it sure as hell does.

That in itself is bad enough but replacing all your essential travel gear will cost. Any decent travel insurance policy usually covers lost luggage, usually up to at least $1000.

allianz travel insurance australia reviews

In fact, the aviation watchdog states that 5.73 items of luggage are lost for every 1000 passengers. That means that if you take 10 flights, then there is a 5% chance of your luggage getting lost forever. Some airports and airlines lose more baggage than others but all of them are equally as obtuse and obstructive when it comes to trying to make a claim.

Lost luggage can ruin your whole trip. I mean, imagine you head to Iceland and they lose all your cold weather gear?!

Medical Bills

Foreign medical care costs can be very high. A friend of mine was once hospitalised while backpacking in Costa Rica and ran up bills in excess of $10,000.

More recently he spent 1 night in a Thai hospital, was billed $1,000 and his passport was used as a ransom (that boy has no luck. Maybe he should stay at home?) . Personally, I don’t have $10,000 to pay to Costa Rican Doctors, but I do have maybe $50 to buy myself a travel insurance policy.

allianz travel insurance australia reviews

If you come from Europe, the cost of medical care in some parts of the world is quite a revelation. If you’re in the US, then you already know all about health extortion. But do remember, your domestic health insurance will most probably not cover you outside of the US.

Accidents happen (and without warning…) and ill health can strike any of us down at any time, anywhere. In fact, if you have experienced the driving or the hygiene standards in India, you’ll already know that you are at high risk of coming to some harm out on the road.

Trip Interruption Coverage

Trip interruption comes in all shapes and sizes. Claiming for flight delays or cancellations is annoying – and in the end, nothing’s guaranteed.

Every year a few airlines or travel agents go out of business leaving passengers stranded. Booking flights home at short notice is costly.

Not getting home on time on the other hand, can mean getting sacked from your job – ouch. If you have to stay a few more nights at your destination waiting for a flight home, then that can also stretch a maxed-out travel budget.

Having trip cancellation and interruption coverage can mean the difference between desperately raiding your overdraft or getting a few extra days of vacation, free of charge.

Theft Coverage

Sadly, tourists are a target for thieves in many parts of the world. Our team have been robbed with guns while backpacking South America . And I know people whose diamond jewellery and MacBooks were burgled from hotels.

Being robbed is scary. But theft coverage makes it suck a little less when you don’t have to fork out for your stolen iPhone.

Repatriation

In the unlikely event of your demise, your travel insurance can cover the cost of repatriation or sending your body home. The costs of this can otherwise run into several thousands of dollars.

Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them. And yet, it does happen.

Furthermore, the law of averages dictates that if you travel enough, something, somewhere will eventually go wrong. Just like you should always look twice before crossing the road, and always wear your helmet before riding a bike, you really should get comprehensive travel insurance.

By the way, some countries require you to obtain insurance before even letting you enter. Imagine being turned back at the airport for the sake of a few quid?! I personally never leave home without first obtaining travel insurance plans from either World Nomads or SafetyWing.

If you’re reading this, then I guess you decided that you do need travel insurance. Yay! Welcome to the world of sensible adults (AKA accepting your own mortality and the fact that you have no control whatsoever over the universe, despite whatever bullshit “The Secret” may have told you).

Allianz travel insurance is perhaps one of the biggest insurance companies in the world. They have been trading for over 120 years and they have offices across the globe.

Though travel Insurance is by no means Allianz’s primary focus or modus operandi. But this is not a bad thing. Note that even “specialist travel insurers” are often, in fact, brands or shop fronts backed by big insurance companies like Allianz.

Allianz

They are governed by the Financial Services regulators in pretty much every national market they trade in. This means that if you have a problem with them, you can squeal on them and have your case reviewed independently and fairly by an adjudicator free of charge.

Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s take a look at the individual travel insurance policies they offer.

Allianz are a major financial service provider and as such, they offer different coverage options, policies and plans aimed at different travellers. Let’s quickly run through them.

Firstly, Allianz travel insurance offer travellers 2 main types of policy. Within these coverage types are little variations. The main policy types are OneTrip and AllTrips .

Within both the OneTrip and AllTrips umbrellas are 3 variations : Basic, Prime, Premier . These vary depending on how much cover you want and how much you want to pay.

As the name kind of suggests, OneTrip covers one single, specific trip generally with a fixed start and end date.

AllTrips covers any and all trips that you make in a one-year period. This annual plan runs from the date you take out the policy, or a date of your choosing, and lasts for 365 days (or 366 in a leap year) .

You can take an unlimited number of trips in the year and an unlimited number of days travelling. Do be sure that all your chosen destinations are covered by the annual travel insurance policy though, otherwise, you may need to obtain additional cover.

OneTrip Basic Plan

This travel insurance policy covers all travel insurance basics such as medical coverage, trip cancellation and lost luggage. Look at it as the entry-level “classic cover” if you like.

The plan may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical and Emergency Dental Coverage up to $10,000 and $50,000 for Medical Evacuation. These amounts may seem high but are not enough if you need to be airlifted home from an accident, for example.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage Coverage up to $500 and $200 for Delayed Baggage. Now, $500 may be enough for your baggage depending on how expensive your clothes are, and whether you pack any specialist equipment. However, a solid travel backpack is usually worth around $200.
  • Trip Cancellation Cover up to $100,00. One of the best features of the OneTrip Basic plan is that Allianz may be able to reimburse the full cost of your trip if you need to cancel early. However, the reason for cancellation needs to be one of Allianz Global Assistance’s list of acceptable cancellation reasons – not because you got bored or changed your mind.

This policy is a good all-rounder and ideal for travellers on a budget . However, it does have some limitations.

Some of the Allianz travel insurance OneTrip basic coverage is a bit on the tight side. Furthermore, OneTrip Basic plan does not include coverage for missed connections or airline change fees. There are also relatively fewer accepted reasons for claiming on the trip cancellation clause.

OneTrip Prime Plan

Broadly speaking, Allianz OneTrip prime plan is more or less the same as the basic – with increased coverage amounts. The policy may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage and Dental Coverage up to $25,000 worth of and $500,000 worth of emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Lost and Stolen Baggage Cover up to $1,000 which should cover most people’s hold luggage. However, the per-item max is $500. So if you pack your $8000 top-quality travel camera , you will only get $500 back for it. It also includes Baggage Delay Costs of up to $300.
  • Missed Connection Coverage up to $800.
  • Airline Change Fees up to $250.

OneTrip Premier Plan

In case you need a bit more on top of that, then we have the OneTrip Premier Plan. The Allianz OneTrip Premier policy is essentially the Prime with even higher coverage amounts. OneTrip Premier may be able to offer cover to;

  • Emergency Medical and Dental Coverage of up to $25,000 to $50,000.
  • Emergency Evacuation Coverage also increases to $1,000,000. With international evacuation averaging around $100,000, this amount is more than adequate to cover your transportation back home.
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage up $2,000. However, like with the OneTrip Prime plan, you can only claim a maximum of $500 per item (up to $2,000 in total). $600 in Baggage Delay.
  • Travel Delay coverage up to $1,600.
  • Missed Connection Coverage up to $1,600.

Other Allianz OneTrip Options & Offshoots

In case that wasn’t choice enough for you, Allianz also offers 2 offshoots of their OneTrip policy. If you like, look at them as the highly specialised cousins of the OneTrip family.

OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan

OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan is definitely Allianz’s budget policy. With this plan, you are only covered against trip cancellation, interruptions, and delays. Medical coverage, medical transportation, and baggage loss are not included.

Personally, I would only consider this policy if (1) you are not checking luggage (2) you have medical coverage elsewhere. For example, this may be OK if you are an EU citizen taking a short break to another EU country where you only have your trusty carry-on luggage and an EU emergency healthcare card.

OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan

This policy is great for travellers who only want medical coverage on one single trip. It provides up to £50,00 in emergency medical coverage and $250,000 in emergency medical transportation coverage.

Remember that this plan only offers protection for medical expenses. If you are robbed, your cuts and bruises are covered but your stolen phone is not. If the airline loses your luggage it is not covered and neither is heartbreak. Trip cancellation coverage is also not included.

This plan is, therefore, for anybody whose sole and only concern is medical coverage.

Remember, the OneTrip policies cover one specific trip. The AllTrips policies we are going to detail below cover long, or multiple trips within a one-year period.

Note that AllTrips policies may also be able to offer rental car coverage for damage as well as dismemberment cover. On the flip side, trip cancellation coverage is either non-existent or limited.

AllTrips Basic Plan

The AllTrips basic may be able to offer coverage for the “classic” issues on multiple trips within a one-year period. Let’s see those numbers.

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $20,000,00 and $100,000 in Emergency Evacuation Coverage. Note that $20,00 on medical emergencies may still be a little on the low side in the event you get very sick in an expensive part of the world such as the US.
  • Lost/Stolen or Damaged Baggage up to $1,000. Yes, this may be able to cover most checked bags but remember the $500 max item clause. Baggage Delay is offered up to $200 and then $300 for trip delay.
  • Rental Car Damage Coverage up to $45,000. Note that additional premiums may apply.

Note that the AllTrips Basic plan does not come with Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage. Remember that means you will not be reimbursed in case you are unable to go on your trip!

AllTrips Prime

As you probably guessed, AllTrips Prime is more or less the same as the basic package with some increased coverage amounts. The policy may be able to offer;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $20,000,00 and $100,000 in Emergency Transportation Coverage.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage up to $2,000.00. Remember that the reason for cancellation needs to be one of Allianz Global Assistance’s list of acceptable cancellation reasons.
  • Lost/Stolen or Damaged Baggage up to $1,000 and $200 for Baggage Delay.
  • Trip Delays up to $300.

AllTrips Premier

If you want even more coverage, then we have AllTrips Premier. The Allianz AllTrips Premier policy is basically the Prime one with even higher coverage amounts. AllTrips Primer may be able to cover;

  • Emergency Medical Coverage of $50,000,00 and $500,000 in Emergency Transportation Coverage.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage up to $2,000.00.
  • Trip Delays Coverage of up to $1,500.00.
  • Dismemberment and travel accident up to $50,000 if you lose a limb or your eyesight when travelling.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

We’re now going to drill down and look at the various things that may be covered by Allianz travel insurance. Remember that some of these are covered by some policy types but not others, and note that coverage amounts and excess’ also vary depending on the exact Allianz policy type.

best travel insurance

Emergency Medical Coverage

Got food poisoning in Delhi? Got hit by a moped in Bangkok? Or maybe you just slipped in the shower and broke your wrist in Madrid?

These things can, and do, happen and will all require emergency medical care. Being sick, infirm, and unable to make TikToks is bad enough as it is, so the last thing you want is a hefty medical bill which you have to pay out of your own pocket.

Emergency accident and sickness coverage is quite likely the most important aspect of travel insurance plans.

Emergency Transportation

Emergency Medical Evacuation is when you need to be sent to your home country, or another country, for further or continued medical treatment, and are too sick to travel home normally as a regular passenger. For example – if you are stuck in a hospital bed on a drip in a leg cast.

Trip Cancellation

Reimburses for prepaid, non-refundable cancellation charges if you must cancel your trip (after the effective date of your insurance plan) due to covered sickness, accidental injury, or death of you, a family member or travelling companion; inclement weather, unforeseen natural disaster at home or at your destination, strike, or other covered reasons.

Trip Interruption

Trip Interruption Coverage includes the same stipulations as listed above in “Trip Cancellation”. It includes the caveat of covering the cost of accommodation to you if you are delayed.

Baggage Coverage for Loss/Damage

Being compensated for baggage loss of lost personal gear is likely the second most important aspect of your insurance. This is one of the most common reasons file a claim on your travel insurance.

This covers reimbursement for loss, theft, or damage incurred during the trip. It can be applied to all personal items that were lost, stolen, or else accidentally blown off the roof of a chicken bus travelling at top speed.

Baggage Delay

In the event your checked baggage is delayed or misplaced by the air carrier (for more than 12 hours) , you can claim reimbursement for any necessary items you need to purchase until your bag arrives. This will typically mean toiletries but may even mean some travel clothes if you can demonstrate the purchase is essential.

Trip Delay cover protects you when you’re unable to reach your destination on time due to circumstances beyond your control. If your airline cancels your flight due to a technical fault, Allianz travel insurance will reimburse you for any meals, transportation, or accommodation costs you incurred as a result. Note that delays of less than 6 hours are not covered.

Change Fee Coverage

Have you ever tried to change or vary a flight date or add or remove a passenger?! The fees can be insanely high. This is where Change Fee coverage comes in. If you have the AllTrips Executive, OneTrip Prime plan or OneTrip Premier plan, you can claim up to $500 to cover the cost of the airline change fee.

Travel Accident Coverage

If you are in an accident, you may be entitled to claim a compensation payment in addition to your medical/repatriation costs. This is usually reserved for loss of limb/eyesight type scenarios and you can’t claim for whiplash or emotional trauma from falling from a donkey!

The Travel Accident Coverage is also payable to your family in the event of your death.

Rental Car Damage and Theft Coverage

The AllTrips travel insurance polices also include rental car coverage. This can often prove considerably cheaper than obtaining insurance direct from the rental car provider.

If you are resident in the US, this feature may not be available to you. For clarity, we suggest you speak with Allianz travel insurance directly.

There are some notable omissions from Allianz’s cover. Let’s take a look at them.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have a pre-existing medical condition which causes you problems on your trip, it is not covered under the Allianz policies. This is fairly common amongst insurers. It is important that you do declare any pre-existing conditions when taking the policy out.

If you do have a pre-existing medical condition, then you may be very interested to hear that SafetyWing can offer full coverage for PEMCs in their policies.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

Extreme Sports

Allianz Travel Insurance does not any kind of adrenaline sport such as Quad Biking and Parachuting. The lack of coverage for extreme or adventure actives is one of the many reasons why we now prefer World Nomads. To get full details of the kind of activities World Nomads can offer coverage for, head over to their site and get a tailer made quote.

Is Turkey safe to travel for families?

So as you can see, Allianz Global Assistance offers a lot of different policy types for a lot of different people. Allianz Travel Insurance maybe suitable for the following kinds of travellers;

  • Annual Travellers – With the Allianz annual plan, you may be covered for a whole rotative journey around the sun, no matter how many times you travel! Annual plans are great for frequent and long-term travellers to save you money in the long run. On the other hand, though, SafetyWing offers a month-by-month policy which you can stop and start depending on how much you travel; this may prove to be more cost-effective.
  • Senior/Ageing Travellers –  Allianz travel insurance policyholders are among the best senior travel insurances . They have no age limit. Believe us, not all insurers offer this and we have a LOT of queries from over 65’s & over 70’s who have struggled to find insurance elsewhere.
  • Travelling Families –  Allianz travel insurance policies may allow children under the age of 17 to travel with their parents for free, on selected plans. This is great for families with kids. My earliest travel memory is of a Spanish ER department, my parents were glad they had me on their policy. Otherwise my foot would still be bleeding 33 years later!

Around The World Backpackers best hostels in Christchurch

Whilst they do offer a myriad of different plans to cover most travellers types, Allianz is perhaps not the ideal travel insurance company for absolutely everybody out there.

  • Adventure Travellers –  Allianz Travel Insurance does not offer protection for extreme activity or sport of any kind! If you plan on doing any dangerous, adrenaline-type activities, then perhaps consider World Nomads who can offer coverage for over 201 different extreme sports. SafetyWing are also rapidly extending their extreme coverage.
  • Travellers Wanting High Medical Coverage –  We usually recommend travelling with at least $100,000 of emergency medical coverage. If you come down with a severe illness or are mangled by a badger, you might be stuck with thousands of dollars in medical bills so need to be prepared. World Nomads do offer $100,000 in medical emergency cover.
  • Corporation Haters –  Allianz are a major international finance company and we know some of you prefer not to deal with such organisations. That’s a perfectly legitimate point of view. However, remember that even a lot of “boutique” insurers are in fact ultimately shop fronts for big insurers such as Zurich, Lloyds, or even Allianz. In fact, all some boutique firms do is sell you the illusion of dealing with a small firm and charge you a hefty commission for the privilege.

So now we know the details, the next burning question is how much does Allianz Travel Insurance cost?

Well actually, it’s very difficult to say. The pricing details vary depending on a wide range of factors such as your age, location, your trip plans, if you have a pre-existing medical condition, and numerous other factors that only the gods of insurance can compute. It’s worth it to get in there and check yourself.

So, now, let’s talk about our trusty travel insurance plans for backpackers.

World Nomads

World Nomads offers coverage for backpackers and adventure trailers. They are one of our favourite travel insurance providers and we have used them for years.

Unlike Allianz travel insurance, World Nomads are a travel insurer with a focus on backpackers.

World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads offer 2 separate plans depending on how much cover you want and what exactly you intend to do. World Nomads can also offer trip cancellation coverage, electronic gadget, and theft coverage in the policies.

Word Nomads can cover over 140 countries (but not Pakistan which is a shame for us) . They can also cover a wide range of adventure stuff and extreme sports like mountaineering which Allianz travel insurance do not.

However, they do not offer home country cover and do not offer open-ended cover. If you are not planning on doing any adventure stuff though, then you may find World Nomads to be a bit expensive.

SafetyWing are a relatively new player on the scene. They are founded by travellers, for travellers, and their primary target is for those travelling as a digital nomad : people like me who move around the world working from our laptops. We can go many years without ever going “home” and SafetyWing recognises this and can offer open-ended cover.

What we LOVE about SafetyWing is that their insurance operates like a monthly subscription that you can stop and start as and when you need it. They are also one of the few providers who may be able to cover some pre-existing conditions and provide assistance with “routine” health stuff.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

guy sitting on a cliff edge with computer

By this point, you may well know which travel insurance is best for you. Maybe it’s Allianz travel insurance, or maybe it’s one of the others.

The question now then is, when should you buy travel insurance?

You can buy travel insurance up until the start date of your trip for most insurers. Many will not cover a trip that has already begun – with the exception of World Nomads and SafetyWing.

Note : if you ever do make a claim, you may well be asked to provide evidence of the start date. So I do not recommend trying to hoodwink insurers. Be totally honest or it will come back on you.

However, in our experience, the earlier you book your travel insurance, the better. This is for a number of reasons:

  • Things sometimes go wrong before the trip even starts. For example, if the airline goes bust. This happens to 1000s of people every year. Or what if you get very sick a week before flying and have to cancel?! If you have the right travel insurance in place, your insurer may cover you in these scenarios.
  • The vast majority of policies include a cooling off period . This is a period of time (usually 28 days) when you can cancel the policy and get all of your money back. We suggest using the cooling period to read through the policy documents and ensure that the cover fully meets your needs. Upon a closer look, if it does not suit you, you have time to contact the insurer and amend the policy, or cancel it and obtain more suitable travel insurance.

Personally, I usually book my travel insurance the very same day I book my flight. The only exception is if I already have long term or an annual plan. In these scenarios, instead, be sure to check the last date on your annual/long-term cover and make sure it covers your whole trip.

Is the food in Costa Rica safe?

First up, it is unlikely you will ever need to make a travel insurance claim. Yipee!

In case you do though, you will be very pleased to hear that the process is pretty straightforward as long as you are dealing with a reputable company. If you are not then it may be a lot harder.

To initiate a travel insurance claim, all you need to do is contact (call) Allianz Global Assistance and chat with their 24-hour multilingual staff. You should do this as soon as possible or as soon as you know you will need to make a claim .

You will need to tell them about your claim including details of what has gone wrong, and what the damage seems to be. You can also initiate the process online by signing into your account.

If you are claiming lost or stolen items, you will need to write up a formal sworn statement of events, detailing what happened and what was lost. You will also need to have an official police report made up – it is highly important that you obtain this even if it means paying a fee/bribe or hassling the police to do it. Try to get it in both the native language and in English if possible.

The Insurance company may contact you to discuss your claim further. You may even be subjected to a an anti-fraud interview and your call may even be run through voice detection software designed to spot deceit! However, you have nothing to worry about if your claim is legitimate and in order.

It is very helpful to get all of your receipts and invoices together first and submit all expenses at once. Do keep copies of every expense, bill, invoice, and report as you will need to provide these to the claims team. They may pay out small amounts without a bill, but in the case of extra hotels, flights, or electronics, the rule is usually “no proof = no payment”.

After that is sorted, you upload all of your information and documents, review the claim and submit. The Allianz team will get cracking and stay in contact with you throughout this process. Note that resolution time does vary from case to case. It may be days, weeks, or sometimes months depending on the details of your claim.

I hope you found this Allianz Travel Insurance Review to be informative – it certainly took a lot of work on our part to put it together! Comprehensive travel insurance is important to safe travel and you need to carefully choose the best provider for your needs.

We really care about the safety of our readers. That’s why we do recommend travel insurance so strongly. We’ve seen ourselves what can go wrong – and we wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

So check for trip interruption coverage, get your gadgets covered, but most importantly, make sure any potential medical expenses are covered, especially emergency medical expenses. Shop around different providers to find the right one for you. Once again, we wish you an awesome and safe trip!

Brutally HONEST Allianz Travel Insurance Review – [Updated 2023] Pinterest Image

promotional sidebar image for booking.com

The author did a very nice job explaining the different types of insurance Allianz offers. But, until you have experienced their VERY POOR customer service and actual reimbursement procedures, you will not have the complete Allianz story.

I would never use Allianz Global Assistance for your trip insurance needs During a Viking River Cruise June, 2023, my husband came down with COVID. VIKING handled their end of any claims and taking care of us beautifully, BUT Allianz Global Assistance was a completely different story. We had Trip Interruption insurance (which included coming down with COVID) and trying to get reimbursement for all our medical expenses and a post trip to Amsterdam we had planned (not with Viking, but through our travel agent) has been one of the most frustrating ordeals I have ever dealt with. We are asking for approximately a $2,000 reimbursement and we have received $300.

If you need to file a claim, here is what you can expect after you complete the on-line claim form on Allianz’s website : 1. They will tell you they can’t read your receipts (even though you can read them on the email you send or they are PDFs from Viking or your TA). One Allianz customer service rep (probably the 7th person I talked to), told me to download a $50 app that makes receipts readable, which I did, and they still couldn’t read them. I finally snail-mailed copies of the receipts and they still declined 75% of them. 2. Phone calls with wait times of over an hour. This has happened to me 10+ times (not just a random occurrence), and I have tried all times of the day – same thing. 3. When you do talk to a rep, the call will always, and I mean always, disconnect before the issue is handled.

I could go on and on, but bottom line, I will NEVER use Allianz again or recommend them to anyone. We are out $2,000 + $1,000 we paid for the Trip Insurance. It is a big deal, but I can’t imagine if we had to rely on Allianz for the total trip reimbursement. Thank goodness Viking stepped up and provided the level of customer service they did.

Of course, we are aware that some customers sometimes have insurance claims denied. We also appreciate that others have bad customer service experiences with all kinds of different companies.

However are not privy to the finer details of your situation, and Allianz are not here to put across their side of the story either – furthermore this is not really the legitimate forum to air complaints about them. Still in the interest of openness and transparency we will let your comment stand.

Best of luck with your next trip.

Yes agreed – your statement about Allianz not offering unlimited medical cover is complete BS and misleading to readers. Are you paid to promote World Nomads Insurance? Please provide full disclosure to your readers.

I have just rechecked the Allianz policy information available on their website and what we have said appears to remain correct. If you feel we have missed something then please elaborate.

As for World Nomads, we have made it clear that some of the links in this post are affiliated.

Hi there, I found your article very informative, but I just wanted to make a couple of corrections. Im not affiliated with Allianz, but Ive been researching which insurance to buy and they have provided me with a quote and their PDS, which Ive read in full. The amounts that Allianz offers for overseas emergency assistance and overseas medical and hospital expenses under their comprehensive plan are both unlimited, and they do offer insurance for pre-existing medical conditions, you just have to pay an additional premium.

Allianz Travel Insurance Coverage Review — Is It Worth It?

Why Purchase Travel Insurance

Allianz epidemic coverage endorsement, onetrip plans — for affordability and select coverages, alltrips annual plans — cover all of your trips for a 12-month period, how to obtain a quote with allianz, onetrip emergency medical plan, onetrip cancellation plus plan, rental car damage protector, allianz vs. credit card travel insurance, allianz vs. other travel insurance companies, allianz vs. point-of-sale travel insurance and protection, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

There are a lot of choices when it comes to travel insurance companies , so narrowing your selection to those that have a solid financial rating, offer products that provide good value, and receive high customer ratings should be baseline criteria.

Allianz Global Assistance company ( Allianz Travel) checks all of those boxes. Its parent company, Allianz SE, receives an A+ rating from A.M. Best (a leading insurance financial rating firm), and the company offers competitive individual trip and annual travel insurance products. It also serves over 45 million customers in the U.S. each year with 84% of those customers giving the company a 5-star rating.

Allianz has also been around a long time. In fact, the company was there to insure the Wright Brothers’ first flight and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge — so you know you’re working with an established organization. You’ll also find that Allianz does business in more than 35 countries.

Let’s take a look specifically at Allianz Travel’s insurance products, show you how to obtain a quote, and give you some tips on purchasing and comparing travel insurance policies.

And while our focus is on Allianz Travel coverage, much of our information can apply to purchasing travel insurance in general.

Travel insurance can protect your trip investment with coverage for disruption due to unforeseen events such as severe weather, should you become ill, for illness in your family, missed connections, medical emergencies, and more.

Deciding whether to purchase travel insurance for your trip is an option each time you make a travel booking. The coverage is commonly offered by airlines, cruise companies, tour operators and other travel providers at the point of sale. If you travel infrequently and the cost is relatively low, you may just opt for the coverage during the booking process.

However, if you’re going to be taking several trips, you may be able to save money and receive better coverage if you compare with other travel insurance policies in the marketplace. Additionally, you’ll want to determine if it makes sense to purchase single insurance coverage for each trip or an annual all-trips-included policy.

Situations where it makes sense to purchase travel insurance include the following:

  • You’re booking an expensive trip that includes a lot of non-refundable upfront expenses
  • Your trip includes several travel providers (i.e. airlines, hotels, and tour operators)

While travel insurance is meant to cover unforeseen events, purchasing Cancel for Any Reason coverage may allow you to cancel your trip for any reason.

Bottom Line: If you’re uncomfortable with the amount of money you have at risk when you travel, securing travel insurance can provide immediate peace of mind . You’ll have solace in knowing that if you needed to cancel your travel plans due to a covered event or if your travel is disrupted, you’ll be able to recoup most, or all, of your investment.

Travel Insurance and the COVID-19 Virus

Most travel insurance policies do not provide coverage for trip cancellation due to fear of the coronavirus pandemic . However, COVID-19 is an included illness on many travel insurance policies as it relates to certain coverages such as emergency medical care while traveling and canceling a trip if you become ill with the virus. You may also have coverage if a family member or travel companion contracts the virus and you must cancel your trip as a result.

The only way to cover trip cancellations due to fear of contracting COVID-19 is to purchase Cancel for Any Reason insurance. This coverage can be added to a comprehensive travel insurance policy (with limitations) and subsequently allows you to cancel your trip for any reason.

While Allianz does not offer Cancel for Any Reason insurance , it may cover COVID-19 related illness in the following circumstances:

  • Emergency medical care while traveling
  • Trip cancellation due to becoming ill with the virus

Allianz recently announced that it is adding a new endorsement to select policies that will offer limited coverage for COVID-19 . Circumstances such as becoming ill with COVID-19 and having to cancel your trip, hospitalization, and trip delays due to such illness while traveling will have coverage.

Emergency transportation coverage has also been expanded to include COVID-19-related illness. Terms and conditions apply and the endorsement is not available on all policies Allianz offers.

You can find policies that offer Cancel for Any Reason insurance at TravelInsurance.com  and Aardy.com .

Bottom Line: Travel insurance policies normally do not cover canceling your trip because of fear you might get ill. However, Cancel for Any Reason insurance allows you to cancel a trip for any reason you determine is necessary.

Types of Travel Insurance Policies Available With Allianz

Allianz Travel offers 2 core types of travel insurance plans: single trip plans and multi-trip plans . Each plan allows you to select the level of coverage you want and subsequently, the level of premium you prefer to pay.

We’ve used criteria to obtain a quote for a traveler age 35, traveling for 1 week to Mexico on a trip costing $3,000 . All benefits are per person, per trip, unless otherwise noted.

Allianz OneTrip Plans

The single trip option allows you to select from a Basic, Prime, or Premier plan. Premiums vary by plan and coverage levels.  For the example we selected, the premiums ranged from  $116 for the Basic to $192 for the Premier pla n .

OneTrip Basic Plan — the Most Affordable Plan

The OneTrip Basic plan offers basic trip protection at an affordable price.

Allianz OneTrip Basic Plan

OneTrip Prime Plan — the Most Popular Plan

Need more coverage but still want your travel insurance protection to be affordable? The OneTrip Prime plan offers higher coverage limits at a reasonable cost.

Allianz OneTrip Prime Plan

The following are the maximum coverage limits for OneTrip plans. These coverages can be found under the OneTrip Premier Plan:

  • Trip Cancellation —  up to $100,000 reimbursement for prepaid non-refundable expenses; pre-existing medical conditions included
  • Trip Interruption —  up to $150,000 reimburses for remaining non-recoverable expenses and increased cost of return transport due to trip interruption as the result of a covered event; pre-existing medical conditions included
  • Emergency Medical — up to $25,000
  • Emergency Medical Transportation — up to $500,000 for transportation to the nearest medical facility
  • Baggage Loss/Damage — up to $1,000 for theft, loss, or damage
  • Baggage Delay —  up to $300 for delays 12 hours or more

  • 24 Hour Hotline Assistance
  • Optional coverages include pre-existing medical coverage, rental car coverage, and required to work coverage — restrictions apply

Also worth noting is that kids age 17 and under are covered at no additional charge when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

Bottom Line: Allianz offers several levels of single-trip travel insurance plans that can fit every budget and level of coverage needed.

Allianz AllTrips Annual Plan

If you’re a frequent traveler and want to ensure all of your trips are covered without having to purchase individual travel insurance policies, one of the AllTrips plans might be an appropriate choice. All of the trips you book within the 12-month policy period are covered automatically.

Coverage limits are per person, per trip, but more than 1 person can be included in the policy. Children 17 and under are covered at no additional charge when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

The AllTrips Executive plan is the most comprehensive policy and includes the maximum coverage limits listed below . AllTrips Prime and AllTrips Basic have less coverage than the Executive plan but may still be appropriate for your situation.

For example, the AllTips Basic plan does not include trip cancellation/interruption insurance but has emergency medical, evacuation, trip delay, baggage insurance, and car rental insurance.

  • Trip Cancellation —  up to $10,000 reimbursement for prepaid non-refundable expenses
  • Trip Interruption —  up to $10,000 reimburses for remaining non-recoverable expenses and increased cost of return transport due to trip interruption as the result of a covered event
  • Emergency Medical — up to$50,000
  • Emergency Medical Transportation — up to $250,000 for transportation to the nearest medical facility
  • Baggage Loss/Damage —  up to $1,000 for theft, loss, or damage
  • Baggage Delay — up to $1,000 for delays 12 hours or more
  • Trip Delay —  up to $200 per day for eligible expenses, up to $1,600 in coverage , for delays of 6 hours or more
  • Rental Car Damage and Theft — up to $45,000
  • Business Equipment Coverage — up to $1,000
  • Change Fee Coverage — up to $500
  • Loyalty Program Redeposit Fee — up to $500
  • Travel Accident Insurance — up to $50,000
  • Concierge Services
  • Optional Pre-Existing Medical Coverage — restrictions apply

Bottom Line: Allianz’s AllTrips 12-month plans offer affordable options to cover every trip you have booked or have yet to book within a 12-month period.

Allianz Quote

Travel insurance is one of the easiest policies for which to obtain a quote and subsequently purchase a policy. Unlike auto or home insurance, you simply input some basic information about your trip, your age, where you reside, and your quote is instant.

You can then read through the coverages, select a policy that fits, and hit the purchase button. There is also no risk as you’ll have a free-look period where you can review the policy and decide whether to keep it or not.

If not, you can get a full refund. This period can be 10-14 days after purchase , depending on your plan and state regulations.

Allianz OneTrip Emergency Medical

Additional Travel Insurance Offered by Allianz

In addition to the travel insurance packages offered by Allianz, you can purchase these additional plans and coverages available for single trips:

If trip interruption/cancellation is not important to you, you’ll find this plan with emergency medical, baggage insurance , emergency transport, travel accident coverage , and trip delay an affordable alternative.

If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason or your trip is interrupted for a covered event, you’ll have coverage. Trip delay and 24-hour assistance are included.

For $9 per day, receive rental car damage/theft coverage, rental car trip interruption protection, and baggage loss coverage.

Hot Tip: If trip cancellation/interruption or trip delay coverage comes with your credit card is adequate for your trip but you want additional medical coverage, the Allianz’s OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a viable and affordable supplement.

How Allianz Compares

When it comes to comparing travel insurance policies, it’s difficult to match apples to apples. Coverages vary widely, as well as terms and conditions. The lowest-priced policy is not always the best value for your needs. The flip side is possible, too. You may find a policy with plenty of coverage at a price that is more than you want to spend.

The best solution is when you find a balance between coverage and cost.

Here’s how Allianz’s travel insurance offerings compare with other travel insurance options.

The coverage that comes with your credit card does not compare with a comprehensive travel insurance policy . In addition to the limited travel insurance coverage credit cards offer, if you do have a claim, you’ll have the potential hassle of dealing with a third-party claims administrator.

With that being said, the trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay insurance, and primary rental car insurance coverages found on several credit cards may be more than adequate for your trip.

Here are some of the best credit cards for travel insurance:

The Platinum Card ® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Amex Platinum reigns supreme for luxury travel, offering the best airport lounge access plus generous statement credits, and complimentary elite status.

Before purchasing any travel insurance policy, it’s wise to compare — fortunately that’s an easy task to execute. With comparison sites such as the ones listed here, you can compare as many as 100 travel insurance policies very quickly and find a policy that fits your situation and budget.

Keep in mind that insurance rates and coverages are highly regulated by the states . Insurance companies file a certain policy for a certain price with the state insurance commission, then the company is allowed to offer that policy, at that price, in that state.

For this reason, you won’t find the same policy offered at different prices. However, you could find a policy that is a better fit and possibly for less money by comparing several companies’ offerings.

Not all comparison sites include Allianz but when comparing similar policies, you’ll find that the company is competitively priced (a few companies lower and many companies higher). Individual results will vary based on your criteria.

Here are 4 websites that allow you to easily compare travel insurance policies.

  • Insure My Trip — With over 60,000 customer reviews, 21 highly-rated travel insurance providers, and a best price guarantee, Insure My Trip makes it easy to find the right travel insurance policy.
  • Travelinsurance.com — Compare major top-rated travel insurance company policies easily with this licensed online insurance search engine.
  • SquareMouth — This popular travel insurance search engine offers easy comparisons of hundreds of policies offered by dozens of highly-rated insurance companies.
  • Aardy — AardvarkCompare is a licensed travel insurance company with agents on staff to help you find the right travel insurance policy. Its website allows you to compare the policies of over 30 travel insurance providers.

There are also specialty companies such as World Nomads  that do a great job providing travel insurance for active individuals. If you’re into outdoor sports, adventure activities, or even more risky activities such as skydiving, you can find coverage through World Nomads.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking to purchase a travel insurance policy, you’ll want to compare companies and policies . First, look at companies with a strong financial rating, select a policy with coverages that are a priority to you, then select a premium you’re comfortable paying.

Delta Flight Insurance

Allianz is actually one of the companies that provides the travel insurance you’re offered when you book a flight. An example is displayed in the above image of their offerings when you purchase a Delta Air Lines ticket.

Point-of-sale travel insurance, however, can run from inexpensive options that offer little coverage to expensive options that provide greater coverage but still have limitations, similar to stand-along travel insurance policies.

If you fly once or twice a year, the coverage is adequate for your needs, and the cost is reasonable, you may easily choose to go this route and purchase coverage at the point of sale. However, you may fare better by securing a separate travel insurance quote to compare coverage/cost.

Always read the fine print before purchasing any coverage to ensure you’re getting the coverage you expect. For example, one might assume by looking at this example that canceling the trip would be covered, when in reality the covered reasons are limited.

Bottom Line: Even for point-of-sale travel insurance to cover a single travel purchase, it’s good to get a comparison quote. Securing a quote may save you money while offering broader coverage that could cover your entire trip versus just a portion of it.

Allianz is a solid, established, company offering a nice selection of packaged travel insurance products. Its website is easy to use with a quick quoting function and a simple purchase process. The site is also easy to understand as it is clearly written in plain language rather than legal verbiage.

One downside of Allianz is that the company does not sell Cancel for Any Reason Insurance . This is not an issue if you understand this up front and know that your policy does not allow you to cancel a trip for just any reason. After all, this is the case with most travel insurance — there are specific covered reasons for being able to cancel a trip and have coverage.

Cancel for Any Reason insurance can also result in a premium as much as 70% more than a standard policy, so many travelers may not consider it due to its cost.

If money is not a concern, you can purchase as much insurance as you’d like to have. However, in reality, purchasing travel insurance that works for you involves finding a balance between the coverage you want and the maximum premium you’re willing to pay.

Allianz is a respected company that offers a variety of policy choices with appropriate coverage for the majority of travelers at price points that fit most budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is travel insurance worth it.

Yes, it can be worth it. If you are uncomfortable with the amount of money you would lose or be forced to pay in the event you had to cancel your trip or if you incurred disruption while traveling, you should purchase travel insurance.

An inexpensive trip or single flight may not warrant purchasing travel insurance, but insuring an expensive or complicated trip where you have a lot of non-refundable prepaid expenses at risk makes economic sense.

Travel insurance also provides the intangible benefit of peace of mind, knowing you are protected if you have to cancel due to a covered event or your trip is disrupted once in motion.

What is covered for trip cancellation?

There are limited covered reasons for receiving a benefit from trip cancellation insurance. The number 1 reason most travelers cancel their trips, according to InsureMyTrip.com , is the unforeseen illness of the traveler or of family members.

Fortunately, this is a covered reason for trip cancellation, although the level of coverage varies by company and policy.

Additional covered reasons can include death, hospitalization, or accident to you or covered family, legal obligations, your home becomes uninhabitable, the default of the travel provider, or natural disaster.

Deciding not to take a trip is not a covered reason for trip cancellation. Cancel for Any Reason insurance must be purchased in order to cover canceling a trip for a reason you personally deem necessary.

Does travel insurance cover flight cancellations?

Yes, travel insurance can cover flight cancellations in certain circumstances and depending on the policy purchased.

However, if an airline cancels your flight, whether prior to travel or during your travels, you would first contact the airline or the agency where you purchased your ticket for rebooking, a refund, or travel credit.

If you are not made whole, you could then look for coverage in your travel insurance policy.

If a flight is canceled due to weather during your travels, for example, and you are forced to incur unexpected expenses as a result, you could have coverage under a travel insurance policy if these expenses are not covered, or insufficiently covered, by the airline.

There could also be coverage under trip interruption/delay insurance if an airline cancels a flight and it causes you to miss ongoing travel which has been prepaid and is non-refundable.

Which is the best travel insurance company?

The best travel insurance company will have a high financial rating from a respected insurance industry rating company such as A.M. Best, offer a selection of coverages that matches your protection priorities, and does this at a price you’re willing to pay.

You should check reviews as well, keeping in mind that most consumers want to pay the least amount of money they can at the time of purchase and by doing so, coverage can be sacrificed. When there’s a claim, it’s natural to want the highest degree of coverage, although that may not have been the level purchased.

Travel insurance can offer peace of mind — and financial protection — when you travel. Whether you want minimal coverage for emergencies or are looking for a more comprehensive plan, Allianz Travel Insurance probably has an option that will work for your situation.

CNBC Select breaks down the types of coverage Allianz includes in its policies, the features it offers and other providers you should consider.

10 travel insurance plans make it possible to customize your coverage. For families, Allianz's OneTrip Prime package covers children age 17 and younger when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

  • Limited coverage for risky sports

Allianz Travel Insurance is a global insurance provider. It partners with airlines, travel agencies, resorts, credit card issuers and other companies to offer worldwide travel coverage. The insurer currently offers 10 trip coverage plans, giving travelers plenty of options that range from single-trip plans to plans that cover all your travel for a year.

For example, OneTrip Prime provides trip cancellation/interruption, emergency transportation, baggage loss or delay and other key benefits for a single trip up to 180 days. AllTrips Executive, on the other hand, is a multi-trip plan designed for business travel with higher trip cancellation and interruption limits and coverage for business equipment. You can also opt for OneTrip Rental Car Protector if you need primary car rental coverage against collision, loss and damage.

These plans let you easily tailor your insurance to your situation. Here are the types of coverage that Allianz Travel can include in your plan:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Emergency medical (this covers medical and dental emergencies that happen during your trip)
  • Emergency medical transportation
  • Baggage loss/damage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel delay
  • Travel accident
  • SmartBenefits℠ (this includes automatic and no-receipts payments for trip delays and no-receipts claims for baggage delays)
  • Change fees (this coverage can reimburse you for the fees the airline charges when you have to change the dates of your flight)
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage (with this coverage, you can get reimbursement for frequent flyer mile redeposit fees if your trip is canceled or interrupted)
  • 24/7 hotline assistance
  • Concierge services
  • Rental car collision damage waiver
  • Existing medical condition (this benefit waives the pre-existing medical condition coverage exclusion)

The types and limits of coverage benefits you can get vary by plan.

Many travel cards provide travel insurance benefits . To avoid duplicate coverage, go through your card's terms and conditions and see what your issuer already offers.

One of the features that helped Allianz Travel land a spot on our list of the best travel insurance is the Cancel Anytime benefit. Included with OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans, Cancel Anytime can reimburse 80% of your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if you have to cancel your trip for just about any unexpected reason.

Additionally, the insurer offers 24/7 global assistance to refer you to a prescreened hospital during your trip.

Policyholders can also use the TravelSmart TM  app and check for flight status updates, the latest travel advisories and restrictions for their destination, local emergency services and hospitals and more. The app allows travelers to pull up their protection plan whenever they need and file a claim online.

As of writing, Allianz Travel doesn't advertise any discounts. That said, discounts aren't as common with this type of coverage, especially compared to home and auto insurance .

Allianz is a large global company offering a wide range of financial products and services. In the U.S., that includes travel insurance, life insurance and business insurance.

Allianz Travel can be a solid choice if you're looking to purchase travel insurance. However, it's always a wise idea to compare multiple options to ensure you're getting a good deal.

For instance, AXA Assistance USA travel insurance is also a good provider. You can pick from three plans with the most affordable one starting at just $16, according to the company's website. The most comprehensive option is the Platinum plan which comes with the option to cancel for any reason.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA offers several travel insurance policies that include travel interruption, trip cancellation, and the option of cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

Travel Guard® Travel Insurance also offers a selection of plans, ranging from last-minute options to an annual travel plan. Or you can request a specialty plan, but you'll need to speak to a representative to do so.

Travel Guard® Travel Insurance

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

With 10 available plans to choose from, Allianz Travel makes it easy to get the right travel insurance coverage for your upcoming trip. Multi-trip plans are also available for those who frequently travel, including for business. Still, we recommend gathering several quotes and comparing plans before you purchase travel insurance. Just like with any financial product, it pays to shop around for this type of coverage.

When a family member is doing great that’s when you need this insurance, because lif turns upside down in a minute. Allianz had my back when my dad came up ill and had to cancel my plans

Easy claim experience

The website made it very easy to submit the documentation on my claim and it was approved in less than 10 business days. This was the second time that we missed ports on our cruises and both claims were approved seamlessly.

Dear Karen, Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are sending our warmest well wishes to you for a speedy recovery and are thrilled to hear that you have positive things to say about Allianz Partners.

Date of experience : February 15, 2024

My reason for wanting a refund should…

My reason for wanting a refund should not be determined by what your company thinks is a valid reason. I pay for a service that does not fulfill what it advertise. I can say going forward I will not use or purchase anything from this company and I'll be sure to inform others of this scam.

Date of experience : February 19, 2024

Allianz was very responsive.

Allianz was very responsive. I would say that uploading files to the website was sometimes awkward. I had to upload some files several times, and then had to call to make sure you received them.

Dear Gordon, This is Stacey from the Social Care Team. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback! Sincerely, Stacey Social Care USA

I purchased tickets to see Katt…

I purchased tickets to see Katt Williams and was unable to attend. I purchased the insurance thinking ahead for any unforeseen event. I guess I should have read the FINE PRINT! I’ve had the hardest time trying to get refunded for mine and my fiancés tickets! I’m not sure if anyone else can but I most certainly can’t afford to give away almost $400

  • High premium costs
  • "Cancel for any reason" only available for Premium plan

Why we chose it : Generali Global Assistance is our choice for the best travel insurance for emergency support services because its policies include telemedicine, concierge services and identity theft resolution assistance.

  • Medical emergencies
  • Identity theft resolution

Both its Preferred and Premium plans include trip cancellation benefits or trip interruption in the event that a travel supplier — say, a cruise company, hotel or rental car company — becomes insolvent and can no longer offer its services.

Why we chose it : World Nomads is our top pick as the best travel insurance for travelers who enjoy adventure sports because, unlike most other insurance companies, its policies include coverage for over 150+ sports and adventure activities.

While most travel insurance companies shy away from covering adventure sports and other off-the-beaten-path activities, WorldNomads offers policies specifically tailored to more adventurous travelers.

Its Standard and Explorer plans cover scuba diving, skiing, surfing and 150+ other sports and activities. Both plans include $100,000 in coverage for accidents and illnesses and 24/7 emergency support to help you find local physicians or medical facilities.

  • Standard: Covers accidents and illnesses, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, accidental death and lost luggage or theft
  • Explorer: Increases the coverage limits of each benefit and adds $35K in rental car damage coverage

Most travel insurance companies don’t let you purchase or extend coverage during the trip, but World Nomads offers a rare alternative; individuals who didn’t purchase coverage before their trip can enroll in the company’s “Buy While Traveling” plan. Those who already purchased a policy can also extend their coverage to keep exploring.

Why we chose it : We picked Nationwide as the best travel insurance for cruises because it offers travel insurance plans geared explicitly toward cruise travel.

Nationwide’s emergency medical coverage starts at $75,000, and all three of its plan tiers include “cancel for work reasons” coverage, $500 for return-home-early benefit, $200 for shipboard service disruption, and $25,000 for non-medical evacuations.

Covered reasons for cancellation and interruption include inclement weather, natural disasters and work-related emergencies.

Nationwide also has two single-trip plans: Essential and Prime. In addition to industry-standard trip protection basics, these plans offer above-average medical coverage starting at $75,000 and a “cancel for any reason” add-on that reimburses 75% of non-refundable trip costs.

Travelers can add a pre-existing conditions waiver and coverage in the case of a travel supplier’s financial default (as an upgrade to Essential and included in Prime).

Travel Insurance Guide

This guide covers what travel insurance is, how it works and how to choose the best travel insurance plan for your trip.

What is travel insurance?

What does travel insurance cover, what does travel insurance not cover, how much is travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, how much travel insurance do i need, credit card travel insurance, are there location restrictions when it comes to travel insurance.

  • Travel insurance companies that cover COVID-19

Travel insurance reimburses you if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip early. It can also pay for stolen or lost baggage and medical expenses if you get sick or have an accident during the trip.

International travel insurance is the most sought-after type of policy, but providers also sell domestic coverage and business travel insurance . Frequent flyers can also buy long-term travel insurance through annual or multi-trip plans.

Travel insurance can be worth it , especially if you’re traveling internationally and have covered non-refundable expenses upfront. The same goes for prepaid cruises or vacations for which you’ve booked non-refundable tours, activities or day trips. Buying travel insurance can also be a good idea if you’re traveling to a destination with seasonal weather issues, such as hurricanes and typhoons.

Cancel for any reason travel insurance

“Cancel for any reason (CFAR)” coverage is a policy upgrade that provides a partial refund (typically 50% to 75% of prepaid, non-refundable expenses) if you have to cancel your trip — regardless of what caused your change of heart. In fact, one of the covered reasons is “fear of travel,” which is excluded under standard trip cancellation coverage.

Knowing when to purchase travel insurance is key if you want CFAR coverage. This option must be purchased within 14 to 21 days after booking the trip and may increase the cost of your trip insurance policy by about 50%. You must also cancel your travel plans at least two days before the departure date to claim this benefit.

Trip interruption insurance

Trip interruption coverage will pay if you need to cut your trip short for specific reasons. The insurance company will reimburse you for the unused portion of the trip and help you with additional expenses you incur to get home.

These expenses will only be covered, however, if you cancel due to a covered reason. Examples of covered reasons are the serious illness or death of the policyholder, another traveler covered by the policy or a close relative. Natural disasters are also typically covered.

Comprehensive travel insurance covers many common travel issues and mishaps, from accidents to baggage delays.

The following are standard travel insurance coverage options and add-ons.

  • Trip cancellation insurance: Refunds up to 100% of prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if you cancel an upcoming trip for eligible reasons.
  • Trip interruption: Reimburses you for the unused portion of the trip as well as expenses you may incur to get back home. Insurers typically cap reimbursement at 150% of the cost of the interrupted trip.
  • Travel delays: Reimburses you (up to your policy limits) if you must incur extra expenses such as meals or lodgings during a flight delay. Insurers may also cover airport delays and any flight change fees necessary to catch up on your travel plans.
  • Emergency medical evacuation coverage: Travel medical insurance reimburses you for medical expenses incurred during your trip, under certain circumstances. Benefits for medical expenses can range from $15,000 to $50,000. Coverage may apply even if you’re pregnant while traveling .
  • Emergency medical evacuation: Reimburses you if you need to be evacuated to the nearest medical facility or to a facility in your country of origin. Maximum benefits usually range between $100,000 to $500,000 but can be as high as $1 million.
  • Baggage and personal effects: Refunds you the cost of replacement items if your luggage is lost or delayed during your trip. You must typically wait a predetermined number of hours before filing a claim and submit purchase receipts or a list of items in your luggage. Coverage may be subject to a deductible.
  • Worldwide assistance: Most providers offer 24/7 customer service should you need assistance while traveling. This includes 24/7 multilingual medical hotlines that can provide medical advice and refer you to local healthcare services, if necessary.

Popular travel insurance add-ons

Here we explain a variety of add-ons or riders that allow you to increase benefit limits and cover activities that may be excluded from standard policies.

  • Cancel for any reason coverage: This type of coverage allows you to cancel your travel plans for any reason (you must cancel with the carrier at least 2-3 days before your trip), and get reimbursed for a percentage of your pre-paid travel costs.
  • Pre-existing medical condition waiver : To qualify for this waiver, travelers must purchase coverage within a certain number of days after making their initial trip deposit. The company may also evaluate the travelers’ medical records to ensure their condition hasn’t changed or worsened in the last 60 to 180 days.
  • Rental car insurance : This optional policy covers theft of or damages to a rental car due to causes beyond your control (think collisions, vandalism and weather events). Coverage limits vary by state, and the coverage itself may not be available in every international location. You must also verify whether the rental car company accepts this coverage.
  • Adventure sports coverage: This rider covers injuries or losses caused by participating in adventure sports such as skydiving or bungee jumping. Claims that arise from these activities are typically excluded from standard policies. An exception is World Nomads, the best travel insurance for adventure sports .
  • Identity theft protection: This optional coverage assists you in notifying creditors, canceling your cards, and getting a replacement for your lost passport, credit card or other important documents.

The most common travel insurance exclusions are:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Injuries caused by extreme sports
  • Theft/loss of personal items such as electronic devices and jewelry
  • Pregnancy-related conditions
  • Injuries that happen while you’re intoxicated with drugs or alcohol, even if the intoxicating substance is legal to use at the destination
  • Missed flights, where the traveler is at fault

What is a pre-existing condition for travel insurance?

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or injuries diagnosed by a medical professional 60 to 180 days before you purchased the policy.

Travel insurance providers may define pre-existing conditions differently, so ask your insurer about this, even if you qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver . Misunderstanding the terms and conditions of your policy could lead to your claim being denied.

The cost of travel insurance can range from 4% to 12% of the total cost of your trip and depend on:

  • Your travel destination
  • The length of your trip
  • The types of travel insurance benefits and policy limits you select

We used an online marketplace to get travel insurance quotes for a family of four taking a trip from New York City to London. Let’s say that the family spent $2,200 on four tickets. Insuring all four travelers could cost between $90 to over $300.

To illustrate the potential cost of trip insurance, we calculated 6% of the cost of various trips.

You can buy travel insurance after booking a flight . However, it’s advisable not to delay obtaining a policy. The longer you wait between your initial trip payment and purchasing trip insurance, the greater the chance you’ll miss out on valuable travel insurance add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR upgrades.

The best time to purchase travel insurance is right after you’ve booked your trip’s costliest non-refundable expense, i.e., flight tickets and lodging.

Read our tips below so you’re ready to purchase a policy as soon as you book your flight.

1. Define your travel insurance needs

Consider your reasons for traveling and how long you’ll be away, taking into account who is traveling with you as well as your planned activities.

Business travel insurance is suitable for those who travel frequently for work and need coverage for items like work laptops and phones. Vacationers who booked a cruise may need a specialized policy such as Nationwide’s cruise insurance plans , while students in overseas programs should look into a plan like Trawick International Insurance for students .

2. Review the policy limits

Each travel insurance benefit has a specific payout limit, which may or may not be enough for your particular situation. For example, individuals traveling with expensive personal belongings such as cameras or jewelry may want a higher payout limit for personal effects or riders for high-value items.

3. Check the policy’s fine print

Make sure the trip insurance policy you’re interested in covers the activities you have planned, especially if there are recreational sports involved.

Travelers with pre-existing medical conditions should also confirm whether those are covered under their policy. If not, they may need supplemental medical coverage or a different provider.

Take a moment to check if emergency assistance services are available 24/7 and what kind of assistance you can expect should you have a medical emergency or your belongings be stolen.

4. Compare travel insurance quotes

We recommend you get travel insurance quotes through comparison sites and marketplaces such as InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth Travel Insurance . If you’re traveling on a tight budget, you can still find cheap travel insurance that will cover the essentials, such as medical expenses and personal effects.

Consider the following when comparing quotes:

  • Affordability
  • Maximum payout limits for baggage loss or theft
  • Available add-ons such as “Cancel for Any Reason”
  • Policy terms regarding pre-existing medical conditions
  • Minimum wait time before you can file a claim for baggage loss and trip delays
  • Maximum payout limits for medical expenses and emergency evacuation

B efore buying travel insurance , take stock of what losses — if any — you would incur if unforeseen events forced you to cancel the trip before departure.

These expenses include:

  • Non-refundable flight tickets
  • Non-refundable lodging reservations
  • Pet care accommodations
  • Non-refundable bookings for activities such as guided tours, concerts, exhibitions and plays
  • Transportation costs and other bookings made in advance

Then, consider the risk of becoming injured and the medical expenses you might incur during the trip. Some travel insurers recommend you get a minimum of $50,000 in emergency medical coverage for international trips and $100,000 for cruises and trips to remote locations.

You may also want to purchase additional coverage if you’re taking part in adventure sports, as they’re usually excluded from most trip insurance policies.

Lastly, travelers who are on Medicare — which is generally limited to the United States — should consider an international travel insurance plan if they want coverage for unexpected medical expenses.

Potential medical expenses include:

  • Food poisoning
  • Breaks and fractures from falls
  • Cardiovascular emergencies
  • Endemic illnesses
  • Drinking contaminated water
  • Emergency dental procedures due to injuries
  • Trauma; especially from motor vehicle crashes.
  • Medical evacuations and emergency transport
  • Emergency repatriation

Many credit cards offer flight insurance and travel protection for lodging and luggage if you use the card to pay for these travel expenses. That being said, if you compare credit card travel coverage with travel insurance , you’ll see that most credit cards lack benefits such as medical expenses and emergency evacuation coverage.

Read our guide to the best travel credit cards for more information on how your credit card can help you travel smarter.

Most U.S. insurance providers will not issue overseas insurance for destinations that are currently under a State Department travel advisory or where there is political unrest. Among the countries usually excluded by providers are Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Myanmar and Cuba.

The U.S. State Department created the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so travelers can stay apprised of relevant security updates from the nearest U.S. Consulate. The program is free to use and travelers can register each upcoming trip as needed. STEP is a useful tool for all travelers, no matter their destination, as it facilitates contact between them and the U.S. Embassy in case of natural disaster, civil unrest or a family emergency.

Travel insurance that covers COVID-19

All of the insurers on our list offer COVID-19 coverage. A claim related to COVID-19 can fall under medical benefits (you become sick and need medical attention abroad), trip protection (you file a claim for trip cancellation due to a COVID-19 infection) or both.

Ask the insurance company what you need to do if you get COVID-19. For instance, carriers generally accept results from an FDA-approved home test only if the sampling is supervised by a medical professional in person or via telemedicine.

Does insurance cover COVID-19 testing for travel?

Medical travel insurance covers the cost of COVID-19 testing, provided the test is directed by a physician. BinaxNOW is one of the few at-home test kits that may qualify because the company offers a virtually guided service through telemedicine. Alternatively, low or no-cost COVID testing may be available at a health center near you.

What you can do to protect yourself during your travels

Travel insurance will cover COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses should you fall ill. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from getting sick in the first place.

  • Wear a well-fitting respirator such as a N95, KF94 or KN95. A surgical mask may work in a pinch but offers the least protection.
  • Gather in open and well-ventilated spaces.
  • Get the updated COVID-19 booster and this year’s flu shot.
  • Get the RSV vaccine if you’re elderly or pregnant.

Experts encourage you to get this protection sooner rather than later, as it takes a few weeks to build the necessary antibodies.

You can also check the CDC’s COVID-19 wastewater surveillance map to monitor the increase or decrease of infection near you. This map illustrates how much COVID-19 is circulating in your community based on wastewater (sewage) testing and can help you make informed decisions about traveling and other activities.

Travel Insurance FAQs

Do i need travel insurance.

Travel insurance is optional, but it offers valuable benefits. It serves as a financial safety net, covering unforeseen events before or during your trip. It includes flight insurance, medical expenses and/or reservation costs if you get sick or need to cancel or interrupt your trip.

Having said that, this coverage isn't necessary if you can already get reimbursed for a canceled trip. This can happen, for example, if you reserve your trip with a credit card that offers travel insurance as a perk.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance reimburses you for expenses or losses incurred before or during your trip, provided they are covered under your policy. Travel insurance is more commonly associated with medical emergencies, but it also covers prepaid expenses like airfare, accommodations, tours and more.

If you suffer a covered loss, you'll need to file a claim and provide evidence of the loss. The insurance provider will then analyze your claim and reimburse you if it's covered under the policy. If the claim is denied, you can always appeal the decision.

Which travel insurance is best?

Can i cancel a flight and get a refund.

You can cancel a flight and get a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of purchasing the tickets, according to the Department of Transportation. (This applies to airline tickets purchased at least seven days before departure.)

Once 24 hours have passed, all airlines allow you to cancel a flight and many offer a refund, credit or voucher. What you get will depend on the airline's policies and what type of flight you purchased.

To ensure you obtain a refund for your flight you should buy travel insurance that includes a cancel for any reason rider.

How much is trailer travel insurance?

How we chose the best travel insurance companies.

As part of our methodology, we gathered travel insurance quotes from online comparison site Travelinsurance.com using the following profile:

  • Family of four traveling from New York City to London
  • $2,200 on flight tickets for all four travelers

We then reviewed the available plans and looked at following factors to evaluate and compare each company:

  • Plans and coverage: We looked for insurers with a variety of plans and the ability to customize the policy with upgrades. We focused on companies offering unique add-ons, such as coverage for extreme sports and lost gear or equipment.
  • Ease of use: We considered how easily you could get a quote and understand the policy information. Most of these companies either offer just a few plans to keep things simple or provide a comparison page where you can quickly spot the differences in each plan.
  • Customer service and support: Factors like a 24/7 hotline and an established network of global resources to help in an emergency indicate a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. We gave extra points to companies with mobile apps, multiple ways of accessing customer support and added perks like concierge and translation services.
  • Reputation : To gauge each company’s reputation, we evaluated factors such as customer feedback and ratings, years in business and financial stability as evidenced by AM Best financial strength ratings.

Allianz Motor IQ: helping customers drive away insured

Allianz Australia Managing Director, Richard Feledy stands alongside CJ Jayasinghe, CEO Westside Auto Wholesale and Trevor Bell, WA State Manager Consumer Partners Allianz Australia inside Westside Auto Headquarters with a fleet of motor vehicles parked behind them.

There’s a lot for customers to consider when purchasing a new or used motor vehicle. Often, it’s a journey that includes hours of research online, trips to various dealerships or private sellers, and plenty of time spent pouring over reviews for their chosen vehicle.

After they’ve chosen a vehicle, agreed on a price and the vehicle is ready for collection, most customers would prefer to take their new wheels for a spin than answer a long list of insurance questions. This is especially true when a lot of the questions could be answered using information the customer has already supplied to a dealership as part of their purchase.

That’s why we’ve developed Motor IQ. A solution that uses the data dealers already have at their disposal to create an indicative motor insurance quote for their customer on the spot.

How Allianz Motor IQ helps customers get cover quickly

Dan Tully, GM Consumer Partners calls Motor IQ a “one-click” innovation from Allianz. “This is the start of an exciting innovation program to simplify and digitise the Allianz insurance purchase journey into the car dealer’s customer journeys.”

Colin Hanley, Head of Automotive Distribution, Allianz Australia explains, “Allianz Motor IQ provides car insurance estimates directly from the dealers' system by entering just a few details. We’ve designed Motor IQ to help Sales Managers and Business Managers at the Dealership streamline the insurance process and create a better customer experience.”

“Motor IQ helps get customers on the road quickly with Allianz insurance covering their vehicle purchase,” Colin said.

Onboarding our partners with Motor IQ

We first launched Motor IQ with Westside Auto, who are one of Australia’s largest single site used car dealer, selling 1,000 used cars a month.

Allianz Australia Managing Director, Richard Feledy, (pictured above right) with CJ Jayasinghe (centre), CEO Westside Auto Wholesale and Trevor Bell (right), WA State Manager Consumer Partners Allianz Australia), was on site at Westside's Perth facility to share the exciting moment with our first client.

Motor IQ is a great demonstration of the continued focus Allianz places on creating better experiences for our partners and their customers.

We’re in the process of welcoming five more dealers and manufacturers to our Motor IQ family.

German insurer Allianz says global insolvencies to grow during 2024

According to credit insurer Allianz Trade, companies worldwide will face an increase in insolvencies for the third year in a row in 2024.

"This trend will also apply to Germany - albeit with a delay compared to most other European countries," predict the economists at the Hamburg-based Allianz branch.

"According to the Allianz Trade Insolvency Study, the ongoing economic weakness, structural challenges and tighter financing conditions are likely to cause even more German companies to get into financial difficulties in 2024."

According to the study, the number of insolvencies among German companies is likely to increase by 13% in 2024 compared to the previous year.

"This increase has already begun, particularly in the second half of 2023," said Milo Bogaerts, Head of Allianz Trade for the German-speaking region.

Here, the number of insolvencies has visibly accelerated with a 25% increase compared to the second half of the previous year, "with the hospitality industry, retail, construction and B2B services making a significant contribution."

B2B (business to business) refers to transactions between companies, not with consumers.

In line with this trend, the analysts at Allianz Trade expect the number of company bankruptcies in Germany to rise to around 20,260 in 2024.

Due to the anticipated recovery of the German economy it is expected to stabilize at a slightly lower level of just under 20,000 in 2025.

Globally, the Allianz Trade economists expect the number of cases to increase by 9%. They cite lower growth, trade disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties as the decisive factors for this.

The largest increases are expected in the US and Spain, both up 28 %, and the Netherlands, up 31%, economists said.

"This broad-based increase would mean that the number of insolvencies in 2024 would exceed the pre-pandemic figure in two out of three countries. In 2023, this was still the case in half of the countries," says the head of the Allianz Trade Group, Aylin Somersan Coqui.

However, Allianz Trade does not expect "a tsunami of corporate insolvencies like the one we saw after the global financial crisis, when global insolvencies skyrocketed by 17% in 2008 and 2009."
