Top 8 Ways to Fix Safari Not Loading Websites and Pages on Mac

fix safari in mac not loading websites

Thanks to the groundbreaking Apple M1 chip , the popularity of the Mac lineup is rising to new heights. On macOS, most users stick with what comes out of the box and that includes the Safari browser. While it gets the job done with a nice look and a good set of extension lists, sometimes, you run into websites not loading issues on the Safari browser. Mac not loading websites and pages mostly happens on Safari browser, sometimes due to Webkit. Before you go ahead and download Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for macOS, do check out the troubleshooting guide below to fix the issue.

Fix Safari on Mac Not Loading Websites Issue

There are many factors behind the strange behavior. We will go through some of the basic steps and jump to extreme actions only if it doesn’t solve the issue.

1. Check Internet Connection

This one is obvious. You should check if the Mac is properly connected to the internet. A sketchy internet connection might interfere with the website loading performance. It’s especially true when you try to load heavy web pages with lots of images and videos in Safari.

internet connection not working on mac

Go to the macOS menu bar and click on the Wi-Fi icon. Make sure that it’s connected to the 5G network and not the 2.4G. I usually face this issue on my MacBook Air. Every now and then, my MacBook Air decides to connect to the 2.4G band and not the 5G band. The practice results in extremely long webpage loading times.

2. Reset Router

Sometimes, the real culprit can be the router that you are using for the Wi-Fi connection. In such cases, you won’t be able to connect to the internet on any device, let alone loading websites on the Mac.

reset router to load websites in mac

In such cases, you need to reset the router or upgrade the firmware to the latest version available. Try connecting to the internet and browse the web comfortably.

3. Disable Extensions

Extensions play a major role in any browser’s ecosystem. The Safari browser is no exception here. Apple tightly controls the whole experience and only allows legitimate extensions from the App Store.

However, some extensions might go out of date or become incompatible with the new macOS version resulting in Safari not loading websites on Mac.

It can be hard to determine which extension is causing Safari to not load pages. In such cases, you need to disable all extensions and try your luck with the web browser again. Follow the steps below.

1. Open the Safari browser.

2. Click on the Safari option in the Menu bar.

3. Go to Preferences .

safari preferences menu on macOS

4. Move to the Extensions menu.

5. On the right side, you will find all the installed extensions.

disable safari extensions on macOS

6. Select an extension one by one and use the Uninstall button from the right side to remove them.

4. Uninstall AdBlocker

No, I’m not talking about the Adblocker extension in a browser . Many users opt for a system-wide adblocker such as AdLock to remove any kind of ads from the OS.

These programs might affect the webpage performance on the device. If you are using such software then you need to uninstall the program.

Open the Finder menu on Mac. Go to the Applications option. Identify the culprit app and move it to the Trash .

5. Disable VPN

VPN apps allow you to establish a secure and private network connection . Some websites might not be accessible from the selected VPN location. You need to disable VPN and try the website loading again.

quit vpn on mac

Most VPN apps for Mac offer a shortcut through the menu bar. Click on the VPN icon in the menu bar and turn off the service.

6. Clear Cache

A bad cache can ruin the day. It’s always advisable to clear cache and cookies from the browser at a regular interval. We are going to apply the same trick here to fix the website not loading issue on the Mac. Go through the steps below.

clear history in safari on mac

3. Go to the Clear History menu.

4. The following menu will offer to delete all the browsing history along with cookies and related website data.

7. Update macOS

Safari not loading pages issue might be due to the recent macOS bug. Thankfully, Apple is quick to fix such annoyances. Go to the System Preferences > Software Update and install the latest macOS build.

8. Switch to a Chromium Browser

Chromium is a universally accepted rendering engine. Some websites are specifically designed keeping Chromium in mind. The Safari browser uses a Webkit rendering engine to load web pages. You can switch to the Safari rival such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge and try accessing the website again.

Wrap Up: Safari in Mac Not Loading Websites

Go through the troubleshooting tips above and one of them should easily fix the website not loading on Mac issue. For me, the cache and VPN tricks work all the time to fix the website loading issues on Safari.

Safari Not Working on Your iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It

Ojash Yadav

Although iPhones and iPads support other apps to reach the Web, Safari remains the most favored and frequently used browser for iOS users. Troubleshooting on Safari can be frustrating, especially if its issues prevent you from searching for a solution online. Here are a few common reasons why Safari may not be working on your iPhone and how to fix the problems.

Turn on Mobile Data for the Safari App

Disable experimental features, change your network settings.

Test Your Internet Connection

To begin with, ensure that the problem is with Safari and not with your internet connection. For this, open, say, a non-Apple app like Facebook or Chrome, and see whether the website or the feed loads. If it does, then Safari is at fault. Otherwise, your internet connection is at fault. If it’s the former, move on to the next step.

If you’ve been exploring your iPhone’s data-saving features, which let you specify which apps have access to your phone’s mobile data, then there’s a chance that you turned off mobile data for the Safari app. That means Safari will work when you’re connected to Wi-Fi but not to mobile data. (Try running Safari over Wi-Fi to test this.)

If that’s the case, then to turn mobile data back on for Safari, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data,” and then in the “Mobile Data” list, make sure the slider next to Safari is in the green “On” position.

You may not know about this, but Safari for the iPhone has a whole load of experimental features that you can disable and enable as you please.

The problem with these, as the name suggests, is that they are indeed experimental and subsequently don’t all work properly. Disabling them one by one can fix Safari if it’s not working and help you discover which exact feature was causing the problem,

On your iPhone, go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Experimental Features.”

Turn On Cellular Experimental Features For Safari App

If you have more than one feature enabled here, disable just one, then check to see if Safari works normally again. If it doesn’t, re-enable that feature (if you want it) and disable the next one. Keep repeating this procedure until Safari starts working again.

Try resetting your Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting to the network.

  • Go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi” and turn it off, then turn it back on after a few seconds.

  • If you’re using mobile data, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data” and turn “Mobile Data” off and back on after a few seconds.

  • If neither option works, go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi,” connect to a different Wi-Fi network, and try loading the web page again.

Change Wifi Network

If the problem persists, try restoring your network settings to their original configuration.

  • Go to “Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset” and choose “Reset Network Settings.”

Common Problems With Safari And How To Solve Them

By following the fixes we’ve mentioned above, you should be able to revive Safari and make it work normally again. However, there are some specific issues that commonly come up with Safari. Here’s how to solve them.

Problem: Safari Crashed and Won’t Open

If you’ve ever panicked after Safari closed unexpectedly and couldn’t get the app to start, you probably encountered a bug that affects Safari’s search engine suggestions. This issue can cause the app to crash, freeze, or fail to start altogether. Although the bug usually plagues devices running iOS 10, it can affect just about any iPhone or iPad.

How to Fix It: Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Go to “Settings” and choose “Safari” in your list of apps. Here, find “Search Engine Suggestions” and turn it off.

Turn Off Seqarch Engine Suggestions

This feature offers suggestions for what you can search for as you type into Safari’s search bar. Disabling it gets rid of the problem for many users.

Problem: Safari Is Gray (and Won’t Open)

Sometimes when you update your iPhone’s iOS to a newer version, you may encounter a bug that turns some apps gray and prevent them from opening. This bug causes Safari to stop working and turns its icon gray when you switch to another app while Safari is running in the background.

How to Fix It: Update Your Software

To solve this problem, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. Apple includes important bug fixes in each software update, so it’s important to keep your iPhone or iPad up to date. iOS 11.1 fixed this bug for most users, so be sure to update to 11.1 or greater if you’re running an older version of iOS.

Go to “Settings -> General,” choose “Software Update,” and install the latest update.

Problem: Safari Is Slow

As powerful as your iPhone can be, it can get bogged down with all the extraneous information that it processes. If you notice that Safari takes longer to load pages or graphics, it may be time to do some housekeeping. Try clearing your browser history, website data, and cache to make Safari run more smoothly.

How to Fix It: Clear Your Data

To delete your cookies, cache, and browsing history, go to “Settings -> Safari,” choose “Clear History and Data,” and confirm that you want to go ahead. Safari will remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Clear Website Data Safari

To keep your browsing history but clear your cache and cookies, first go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced.”

Safari Advance Settings Menu

There, choose “Website Data -> Remove All Website Data” and tap “Remove Now.” Note that Safari will not remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Remove Website Data Safari 2

To remove only a portion of your browsing history, cache, and cookies, start by opening Safari and tapping the Bookmark icon. Here, open your history and tap “Clear.” Now Safari will give you the option to clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from the past hour, the past day, the past 48 hours, or from your entire history. Pick the relevant option.

Delete History Safari

Problem: Safari Still Isn’t Working

Although it sounds cliche, turning your phone off and back on again can be the solution to any number of Safari-related issues.

How to Fix It: Restart Safari or Reboot Your Phone

If none of the previous fixes help solve your problem, try restarting the app or rebooting your phone.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and press on the screen when your finger is near the center to open the multitasking view, and then swipe up on Safari to close it. This will reset Safari.
  • To shut down your phone, press and hold the sleep/wake button until a slider appears. Slide to the right to power off your phone. For iPhone X and above, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the slider appears. Then slide it to the right to power off your phone.

safari loading problems

Experiencing difficulties with Safari on your Mac? Don’t fret – this comprehensive guide is here to help. Whether you’re facing issues with loading web pages, signing in, or dealing with unexpected browser behavior, these troubleshooting tips may be just what you need.

First, we’ll address some common issues that can plague Safari users on a Mac. Then, we’ll explore solutions that can help you overcome these challenges. And finally, we’ll delve into some additional settings and tools that might be worth checking out. Let’s dive in!

Why is Mac Safari not working?

There could be numerous reasons why your Mac’s Safari isn’t working, including a one-time bug, a missing update, a problematic extension, and more.

Some common issues you might encounter with Safari on your Mac include:

  • Empty web pages, partial content display, or other unforeseen behavior.
  • Inability to sign in to a particular site, despite entering valid login details.
  • Sites requesting cookie removal or reset.
  • Safari lagging, freezing, or suddenly shutting down.

Safari not working fix

If you are looking for a fix for your Safari not working as it should (or at all), we recommend trying the following troubleshooting methods that should help you resolve the problem:

Hit the refresh button

In Safari, head to the menu bar, click the View option and then select Reload Page .

reload page safari

Alternatively, you can use the Command-R keyboard combination to reload a web page. If Safari remains unyielding, close the app and attempt again. Should it persistently refuse to close, you can press together the Option , Command , and Esc keys to force it to quit.

If Safari reopens any unwanted sites, close it and then hold down the Shift key while reopening the browser. This manages which tabs and windows will automatically reopen in Safari.

Stay current with software updates and reboot

Upgrading macOS can also include Safari updates. If your Mac fails to restart on its own after updating, click on Apple menu > Restart. This ensures all vital background updates take effect.

Examine Safari extensions

Deactivate any Safari extensions by navigating to Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Extensions and unchecking each one. If a troublesome extension is identified, verify it’s current. More details on Safari extensions can be accessed online.

Test out a private window

To stop websites from utilizing stored data (such as cookies and caches) that might be causing disruptions, view the site in a private window. Choose File > New Private Window or press Shift-Command-N. If successful, follow these instructions to eliminate the website’s data:

  • Navigate to Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Privacy.

  • Click Remove, followed by Done.
  • Re-access the website in a non-private browser window.

Adjust Safari settings

Some pages may be incompatible with specific settings in your browser. To check your Safari settings, open the browser’s menu from the menu bar, then go to Settings (or Preferences ), select the Websites tab, and then open Privacy (or Security ). Modify privacy, security, and website settings as required to determine a functional combination.

Review iCloud Private Relay

For iCloud+ users employing the Private Relay feature, attempt reloading the page without it. Choose View > Reload and Show IP Address in Safari’s menu bar. This option is visible only when Private Relay is enabled. Additional information on iCloud Private Relay can be found online.

Check any VPN services or third-party security software you might be using

VPNs or other security software interacting with network connections could influence your browsing capabilities. Investigate potential network complications related to VPNs and similar software.

Assess network configurations

Altered proxy or DNS settings can impact access to online content. Determine if the issue persists across different browsers or devices on the same network, or reset your network settings by establishing a new network location on your Mac.

iPhone Safari not working

Are you tired of Safari, the native browser on your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook, not working as expected? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many Apple users face issues with Safari from time to time, but luckily, there are various solutions to get it back up and running.

Safari comes pre-installed on almost every Apple device, providing a fast and efficient browsing experience. However, occasionally, Safari may not work correctly, leaving you unable to access the internet. To help you get Safari back on track, we’ve compiled a list of possible fixes.

If you are having problems with your iPhone’s Safari not working, then here are the possible troubleshooting methods that you can try in order to take care of the issue:

Clear Safari cache

Clearing all of Safari’s data can also be helpful, particularly if you have a lower storage capacity on your iPhone or iPad. To clear Safari’s data, navigate to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This will erase all extra data in the Safari app.

Update Safari

Keeping your iOS up-to-date can resolve issues with Safari. Apple is known for fixing widespread issues with their updates, so check for any available iOS updates on your iPhone or iPad.

A simple restart

First and foremost, try the classic solution: restart your device. Although it may sound like a cop-out solution, restarting your device can indeed help because this will clear its usable memory, speeding up Safari, and hopefully resolving any problems. If Safari is frozen or displaying a blank white screen, restarting your device might fix the issue.

Disable Safari Suggestions

Next, consider turning off Safari Suggestions. This relatively simple fix is often effective in resolving issues with Safari not loading or crashing. To disable suggestions, navigate to Settings > Safari > Safari Suggestions and toggle it off. While you’re at it, you can also turn off Search Engine Suggestions, as some users have reported this to be helpful.

Check your connection to the web

If you’re primarily connected to Wi-Fi, you may have disabled cellular data for Safari to save data usage. If your Wi-Fi isn’t functioning correctly, enabling cellular data could fix your issue. To do this, go to Settings > Cellular > Safari and toggle it on. Alternatively, try turning off Wi-Fi and connect using cellular data only. If this works, it indicates a network issue with your Wi-Fi.

Check your Screen Time and Content Restrictions settings

Have you ever altered your Screen Time settings or blocked certain websites? If so, try turning these settings off. Content Restrictions can inadvertently block websites you still want to use. To resolve this issue, go to Settings , then tap on Screen Time , open Content & Privacy Restrictions and then toggle it off if it’s currently enabled.

Reset the Network Settings

If you’ve encountered network-related issues before, resetting your Network Settings could help. To reset the Network Settings on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will only reset your Network Settings and won’t erase other data on your device.

Enable JavaScript

Ensure that JavaScript is enabled on your device, as it’s crucial for displaying interactive content on websites. To check if JavaScript is on and enable it if necessary, head to Settings > Safari > Advanced on your iOS or iPadOS device.

Perform a Factory Reset

When all else fails, consider resetting your iPhone to factory default settings. This will erase all data on your iPhone, and you’ll need to set it up from scratch. However, it’s a highly effective method for resolving various software issues. To reset your device, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Erase All Content and Settings.

If you’ve tried everything and Safari still isn’t working, consider using an alternative browser while waiting for the next iOS update, which might contain a fix. Plenty of great browsers are available in the App Store that can cater to your needs. In the meantime, you can also start a new discussion in the Apple Discussions Community to see if others are facing similar issues.

iPad Safari not working

If the Safari browser on your iPad is not working properly, then we recommend trying out the solutions we’ve provided for when Safari is having problems on an iPhone. Since both devices use a very similar operating system, what works on iPhone should also work on an iPad.

Safari Not Working on iPhone Banner Image

Safari is the go-to web browser for many iPhone and iPad users. Although the latest iOS 14 allows you to change the default web browser and mail app on the iPhone , Safari remains the most favored web browser for a majority of iPhone users. This is because of its powerful built-in privacy features, enhanced system integration, less power consumption, and other useful features.

Having said it, it’s equally important to know that like any other app, Safari may also behave unexpectedly sometimes. Many iOS users have reported Safari not working issues on their iPhones. Sometimes, the Safari app becomes unresponsive, loads slowly, or shuts down unexpectedly.

If you too are facing trouble in accessing Safari on your iPhone, here’s our troubleshooting guide that will help you fix Safari not working, not opening a page, or crashing issues. You can follow this guide to fix Safari problems on any iPhone model, including the older

iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone XR to the latest iPhone 12, 12 Mini , 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max . Plus, if you’ve got an iPhone 7, 7 Plus , or any other older model, the mentioned steps will work for them too.

Before we start with the list of solutions, let’s get to know some possible reasons why Safari is not working on your iPhone.

Why is Safari not working on my iPhone?

Some of the most common reasons when Safari is unable to load a page, crashes unexpectedly, freezes randomly, or lags include:

  • Poor network connection
  • Incorrect network settings
  • Software glitches
  • Running an older version of iOS.
  • Excessive data in the cache

Now, when we know the common reasons for Safari not responding or working properly on your iPhone, let’s get started with the list of solutions.

Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk, TechieTechTech will not be responsible if anything goes wrong with your device.

11 ways to fix Safari not working on iPhone

1. relaunch safari.

Relaunch Safari

If Safari is not working properly after an iOS update or if the app is not loading a page on your iPhone, you must quit Safari, and launch it again. It could be a system issue or some minor app glitches that are causing trouble in the smooth functioning of the Safari web browser on your iPhone. Such issues can be generally fixed by re-launching the app. Also, if you’ve got an older model like

iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 8 Plus , it’s very common to face such issues with apps after you’ve updated iOS on your device. Re-launching the app is one of the easiest methods that can help you fix Safari not working problems on any iPhone.

Close Safari on iPhone X or later models – Go to the Home Screen, Swipe Up, and pause in the middle. Now, swipe up the Safari app preview to close it.

Close WhatsApp on iPhone 8 or earlier models – Press the Home button twice, and you’ll get the recently opened apps. Swipe up Safari to close it.

Once you’ve closed Safari, wait for a few seconds, and then open it again. This super-quick method has proven to be an effective solution in wiping off any minor bugs on your iPhone. It can help you fix Safari crashing on the iPhone issue too. So, make sure you do not skip this step.

2. Open too many Safari tabs?

Close tabs

It can be possible that you’ve opened too many tabs in the web browser, and this usually results in Safari crashing on your iPhone. When you’ve opened multiple tabs at once, the Safari app can run out of memory, which results in slow performance or unexpected shutdowns. If this happens to be your case, it’s extremely important to check the opened tabs in Safari. If you see multiple tabs, we recommend closing the tabs that you don’t need to release space.

Go to Safari, open the tab icon on the bottom-right corner, and click ‘X’ to close the tabs that you don’t need.

3. Reboot your iPhone

It sounds very basic, but rebooting your iPhone has proven to be an effective solution for many of the tech problems. It’s a life-saving tip for situations when Safari is not responding, not loading pages, or keeps crashing repeatedly on iPhone. It will refresh data and apps, and also release the extra memory that could be responsible for Safari working too slow on your iPhone. In short,  a reboot can wipe off any minor software glitches that are interfering with your iPhone or the apps.

Reboot iPhone X or later:

  • Press and hold either of the Volume keys and Side button until you see the power off slider.
  • Drag the slider, and wait for 30 seconds, to allow your device to turn OFF completely.
  • Now, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Reboot iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 8, or earlier models

  • Press and hold the Side button until you see the power off slider.
  • Drag the slider, and wait for 30 seconds.

4. Update iOS

If you’ve tried rebooting your iPhone, but it hasn’t helped you in fixing Safari problems, it’s time to update iOS. The older version of iOS could be the underlying cause of Safari not loading, not opening a page, or other performance-related problems on your iPhone. To escape such issues, it’s a great idea to make sure that your iPhone is running the latest stable version of iOS . Updates are released with important bug fixes and security patches to ensure a smoother performance on your iPhone.

1. Head to Settings > General.

2. Tap on the Software Update .

5. Disable Experimental Features

Apple has several Experimental features that are designed for developers to debug web experiences within their apps. As these features are experimental, they may work properly and can cause minor software issues too. A regular user might not be familiar with these features. Apple also allows you to enable or disable these features as per your needs. Therefore, it’s better to disable the features that you don’t need. If you’ve enabled Experimental Features on your iPhone, you can disable them to figure out if they were the ones responsible for Safari crashing on your iPhone.

Here are the steps to disable Experimental features on iPhone:

1. Head to Settings

2. Scroll down and tap Safari

3. Go to the bottom and tap Advanced > Experimental Features

Disable Experimental Features on iPhone

4. Now, for all the features that are turned ON, try disabling them one by one, and check if Safari is working properly on your iPhone.

6. Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Search Engine Suggestions feature in Safari will ask your selected search engine for suggestions based on what you’ve typed. This feature is designed to offer better suggestions based on your usage patterns. Some users may like the Search Engine Suggestions feature, but if Safari keeps on crashing, or if you’re unable to open Safari on your iPhone, you can try disabling this feature. Sometimes, Search Engine Suggestions can also slow down Safari’s performance.

Follow these steps to disable Search Engine Suggestions:

1. Go to Settings

2. Scroll down and choose Safari

Disable Search Engine Suggestions

3. Turn the slider OFF for Search Engine Suggestions

7. If you’re using a Wi-Fi network

If Safari is not working on your iPhone and you’re using a Wi-Fi network, there can be some issues with the Wi-Fi network and not your iPhone. To double-check, follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Toggle Wi-Fi

If you’re unable to access Safari on your iPhone, and you’re using a Wi-Fi network, just toggle the Wi-Fi switch to clear away any minor bugs that may be causing Wi-Fi issues on your device. If your iPhone can’t detect or connect to a Wi-Fi network, or your Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping, you may face issues with the Safari app. To fix these issues, toggle Wi-Fi on your iPhone.

Toggle Wi-Fi

Swipe down from the top-right of your screen to access the Control Center and tap the Wi-Fi icon . Wait for a few seconds ( around 5-10 seconds), then tap the icon again. Alternatively, you can go to

Settings > Wi-Fi

2. Re-connect to the Wi-Fi network

Sometimes, the connection parameters get changed on the wireless access point or the Wi-Fi network information gets corrupted on your iPhone. This can cause Wi-Fi issues on your device, which in turn, could leave you with Safari not working on Wi-Fi. To deal with such situations, you must delete the network information to refresh your device’s Wi-Fi connection. This will re-establish the connection between your iPhone and the Wi-Fi network. Plus, it also clears away the saved information on your phone that might be causing trouble with the authentication.

Make sure to remember the Wi-Fi password as you would have to enter that again to re-establish the connection to your Wi-Fi network.

1. Head to Settings > Wi-Fi

2. You get a list of all the Wi-Fi networks that you’ve added to your device.

3. Find the name of the Wi-Fi network you’re facing trouble with.

Re-connect to the Wi-Fi network

4. Tap the small info-icon.

5. Select Forget This Network

3. Restart Wi-Fi Router

Disconnect the Wi-Fi router and other networking equipment from the power source for at least 15-20 seconds. This will eliminate all the bugs in the network and give a fresh restart to the Wi-Fi router. In many cases, rebooting the Wi-Fi router can help fix the Wi-Fi issues on the iPhone and iPad, which ultimately resolves the issue of Safari not loading or unable to open page problems.

4. Use a different Wi-Fi network

If restarting the Wi-Fi router didn’t work for you, call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to fix the internet problem. Just for the time being, you can connect to a different Wi-Fi network or use a Wi-Fi hotspot from your family member’s or friend’s smartphone and check if you’re able to access Safari or not.

8. If you’re using Mobile Data

Follow the steps mentioned to fix Safari not working on cellular data on your iPhone:

1. Check if you’ve turned ON Cellular Data for Safari

If you’re using mobile data to access Safari on your iPhone, make sure that you’ve allowed Safari to access data on your device. There can be instances when you’ve mistakenly disabled mobile data for Safari. If you’ve done so, Safari will only work when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, and not on mobile data.

Check if you’ve turned ON Cellular Data for Safari

Head to Settings > Mobile Data , scroll down, and check if you’ve turned the slider ON next to Safari .

2. Toggle Mobile Data

This super-quick method works really well if you’re facing any internet-related issues on your device. It also helps fix Safari not loading issues on your iPhone. When you toggle mobile data, it will wipe off any minor network errors on your iPhone. It has helped me fix Safari not working issues on my iPhone 11 quite a few times, therefore, make sure that you try this method as well.

Follow either of the methods to toggle Mobile data on your iPhone.

1. Swipe down from the top-right of your screen to access the Control Center . Now, tap the Mobile Data icon . Wait for 5-10 seconds, then tap the icon again.

Toggle Mobile Data

2. Go to Settings > Mobile Data and turn the slider OFF for Mobile Data. Wait for 5-10 seconds, then turn the slider ON.

3. Check your data plan .

It can be possible that Safari is not working on cellular data because you’ve run out of data. To be on the safer side, check your data plan on your mobile carrier’s official app or try to open WhatsApp, Instagram, or any other app on your iPhone. If

Instagram or WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone , there are high chances that you’ve run out of mobile data. In case you’re sure that you have sufficient data, it’s time to check for cellular network issues.

4. Check for Network issues

Network or Data issues could be an underlying cause for Safari not opening or working issues on your iPhone. To double-check, you can ask your family member or a friend who’s on the same network, and verify if he/she can use Safari or not. If they are also facing the same issues, there could be some network issues. In such a case, you can either wait for some time and then check if the issue has been fixed or switch to a Wi-Fi network (if available).

5. Check if APN Settings are configured properly on your iPhone

APN (Access Point Network) defines the network path for all mobile-data connectivity. If you’ve checked everything and are still not able to use mobile data on your iPhone, then you must contact your service provider and verify if the APN settings are properly configured on your iPhone. It’s worth-knowing that the users who’re using an unlocked iPhone or a prepaid SIM card might need to adjust the APN settings for their SIM card. If this happens to be your case, don’t forget to contact your service provider and ask for the details.

6. Switch to a Wi-Fi network

If a Wi-Fi network is available, you can try switching to it, and check if Safari is working on your iPhone. If you’re still facing the same problem, follow the other methods to fix Safari not working, opening, or crashing issues on your iPhone.

9. Clear Cache, History, and Website data

When you don’t delete cache files for a long time, they can pile up, and cause problems on your web browser. If Safari is taking too long to load a page on your iPhone, or if it gets unresponsive, you must clear cache, history, and website data on your device. It will eliminate errors, make Safari run smoothly, and also improve the overall performance of your iPhone. It’s an effective solution in fixing many Safari-related issues on the iPhone.

Here’s how to clear History and Website data on your iPhone:

1. Head to Settings > Safari

2. Select Clear History and Website Data

2. Tap the History tab (the Clock icon)

Delete browsing history, cache, and website data for a specific period

3. Tap Clear option available at the bottom-right corner

Safari will ask if you want to clear your history, data, and cache from the past hour, today, today & yesterday, or from your entire history.

10. Reset RAM on your iPhone

Many users have reported Safari crashing issues on iOS 13 and Safari screen freezing at random on their iPhones. If you are also facing this, it’s time to reset the RAM on your iPhone. Moreover, if Safari keeps reloading pages, unable to load new pages on your iPhone, or works extremely slow, resetting RAM will help you fix such issues too. When RAM gets full, you’ll face issues while accessing Safari and some other resource-intensive apps on your iPhone. This process does not quit any of your opened apps, it simply reloads them, and makes your iPhone perform significantly better.

Here’s how to reset RAM on iPhone 8 or later:

First, we need to enable Assistive Touch. For this, head to Settings> Accessibility > Touch > turn the slider On for Assistive Touch . Now, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Go to Settings > General
  • Scroll down and tap Shut down
  • You’ll see the slider to turn off the power along with the Cancel option.
  • Tap the Assistive Touch button.
  • Press and hold the Home button
  • Now, your iPhone will be locked and you’ll be asked to enter the passcode.

Here’s how to reset RAM on iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and earlier models:

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Once you see the “Slide to power off” option on the screen. Release the Sleep/wake button
  • Now, press and hold the Home button.
  • After a few seconds, your iPhone will return to the Home Screen. You’ve cleared your iPhone’s RAM successfully.

Alternatively, you can also force restart your iPhone to free up RAM. It’s useful in situations where the display of your iPhone has frozen.

To Force Restart iPhone 8 or later models, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Press the volume up button.
  • Now, Press the volume down button.
  • Press and hold the sleep/wake button.
  • Keep holding until you see the Apple logo.

To Force Restart iPhone 6s or earlier , hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button until you see the Apple logo.

That’s it. You’ve successfully reset RAM on your iPhone. Now, check if Safari is working properly on your iPhone or not.

11. Reset All Settings on your iPhone

If you’ve tried everything on the list and nothing has helped you fix Safari on your iPhone, you can resort to the last option of resetting all settings on your device.

When you update iOS, it can automatically override your iPhone’s settings, and this could result in some conflicts with the apps present on your iPhone. Therefore, if you notice that you started facing Safari-related issues on your iPhone after a recent iOS update, resetting all settings can help you get rid of such problems. Once you reset all settings on your iPhone, your device will load up the default settings. It’s worth mentioning that this method will not delete any media or files on your iPhone, it will simply clear all the website details and login information. Therefore, there’s no need to backup your data.

Follow the steps mentioned below to reset all settings on your iPhone:

1. Go to Settings > General

2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset

3. Tap Reset All Settings

Reset All Settings on iPhone

4. Enter the passcode

Fix Safari Slow Page Loading Issue in Mac

Safari is the default browser in macOS for browsing and viewing certain type of web files like CSS. The performance of Safari will be very good when the Mac is new but over the period of time undoubtedly the pages will start loading very slowly. Notably, the same page loading slow in Safari will load very fast on other browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox on the same Mac.

How to Fix Safari Slow Loading Pages in Mac?

After trying out with multiple tricks, here are consolidated list of tips for improving the page loading speed with Safari.

1. Change DNS

Though DNS servers are not directly related to the browser as such, one of the main reasons for slow page loading is the caching problems due to DNS servers. Safari obtains DNS servers from your ISP’s through default settings. You can change the DNS servers to any reliable public servers like Google Public DNS servers and try loading the page again. Learn more about changing DNS in macOS .

Note: Remember to clear your browser’s cache after changing DNS server settings.

2. Switch Off DNS Prefetching

Besides DNS servers, Safari also do DNS prefetching to resolve the domain names to IP addresses for all resources on a webpage. For example, if a page has 10 links and 3 images, then Safari proactively will try to get the server IP address of each of the links and images (10 + 3). This will help to load the links and images faster if clicked upon, but may cause slow loading of the current page you are trying to view. So you can disable the DNS prefetching option and check whether the page can be loaded faster. In Mac the DNS prefetching needs to be disabled using “ Terminal ” application as explained below:

Open “Terminal”, paste the below command and press enter.

This will disable DNS prefetching and you can enable it anytime later using the command:

3. Change IPv6 Settings

Generally, IPv6 is configured as “ Automatically ” which you can change to “ Link-local only ” and check the page speed. You can change the IPv6 settings:

  • Go to “ Apple menu > System Settings… > Network ” section.
  • Click the connected “Wi-Fi” item and then click “Details” button.

Open Wi-Fi Network Details

  • Go to “TCP/IP” section, click the dropdown against “Configure IPv6” and select “Local-Link Only” option.

Configure IPv6 Link-Local Only

You should have admin access to access network settings details in a Mac.

4. Disable Low Data and Limit IP Tracking Mode

Low data mode helps to restrict the data usage while limiting IP tracking helps to protect the privacy by hiding your IP address from trackers. You can disable these settings and check if that fix slow page loading issue in Safari.

  • Go to “Apple menu > System Settings… > Network” section.
  • Click “Wi-Fi” option and then click the “Details” button against the currently connected Wi-Fi network.
  • On the pop-up, disable “Low data mode” and “Limit IP address tracking” options.

Disable Low Data and IP Tracking

5. Create a New Profile

Webpages may load slowly if your current Safari profile data is corrupted. You can create a new profile and browse the pages to check if that helps to fix the issue. Go to “Safari > Settings… > Profiles” and click on “Start Using Profiles” button to create a new profile in Mac Safari .

Create New Safari Profile

6. Delete Safari Property File

Safari uses a property file to control the settings and the corrupted property file may also cause slow loading of web pages. You can delete the file and check whether the pages can be loaded faster. In order to delete the property file, launch “ Finder ”, press “ Command + Shift + G ” and go to “ ~/Library/Preferences ” folder. Find the file “ com.apple.Safari.plist ” and delete it.

Delete Safari Preferences File

Note: Safari will automatically regenerate this preferences file when you open next time.

7. Clear History and Website Data [Reset Safari]

The older version of Safari has a exclusive option called “Reset Safari” to make the browser to its initial factory settings. But this option was removed and no more available in later versions. Now the resetting has lengthy process of removing the cache, history and other saved data.

The browsing history and cache from Safari may sometime causes slow page loading. You can clear the history under the menu “ History > Clear History… ”. Webpages will tend to load slower after cleaning up the history as the cached scripts and CSS files were removed from the temporary browser storage. Hence, conclude the speed after using sometime instead of deciding immediately after clearing the history. You can also set how long Safari should keep your history under “Safari > Settings… > General” section. Click the dropdown against “Remove history items” and select a day, week or month option. Keeping prolonged history for month or year will affect the loading speed as webpages might have changed during that time. Similarly you can also set the time for removing downloaded items from Safari to keep your Mac clean.

Set Time for Remove History Items in Safari

In order to cleanup the cache, you should first enable “Develop” menu in Safari. Go to menu “Safari > Preferences” and navigate to “Advanced” section. Enable the checkbox “Show Develop menu in the menu bar” option. Learn more tips for developers in Safari .

Enable Developer Features in Mac Safari

Once the “Develop” menu is enabled, you can clear the cache by going to the menu item “Develop > Empty Caches”.

8. Disable Safari AutoFill

AutoFill enables you to store the data like usernames and password and fetch them when the page is loaded on Safari. You can disable this feature by navigating to “ Safari > Preferences ” and disable all AutoFill web forms options under “ AutoFill ” tab.

Disable Safari AutoFill in Mac

9. Disable or Uninstall Safari Extensions

Extensions are external program affecting Safari’s behavior thus have a chance to slow down the performance.

  • Check installed extensions by navigating to “ Safari > Settings… ” menu and go to “Extensions” tab.
  • Uncheck the extension name to disable it. Otherwise, choose the extension and click the “Edit Websites…” button. It will take you to the “Websites” tab where you can remove the sites on which you don’t want the extension to work.
  • Alternatively, click “Uninstall” button to delete the extension completely and check if that helps to load the pages fast.

Uninstall All Safari Extensions

Note: You can also disable all extensions to check the page loading speed and then enable one by one to find which plugin is causing the issue.

10. Disable Content Blockers

Content blockers in Safari allow to disable advertisements and other distracting elements on webpages. However, this can sometime affect the page and loading speed. Go to “Safari > Settings… > Websites > Content Blockers” section. Select the items in the list and remove them.

Disable Content Blockers

11. Check Memory Usage

All applications including Safari will be slow when your Mac is running out of memory. There are free apps to check the memory consumption and release the locked memory. These cleaning apps will also show which applications consuming more memory. You can check and close those high memory consuming apps when you are using Safari.

12. Change Search Engine

The default search engine in Safari will vary depending on your country. It is worth to change the default search engines to different one and check the page loading speed is getting affected. You can change the search engine by going to preferences and under the “Search” tab.

Change Search Engine

13. Delete Other Browser Apps like Chrome

Google Chrome is undoubtedly a wonderful browser on Windows based platforms. But on Mac it is popular for consuming more resources and slowing down the performance. Especially when you have Chrome and Safari installed on your Mac, you can expect the dead performance from Safari. As Safari is a platform dependent browser only works on Apple platforms, we highly recommend using it as a default browser on your Mac. Delete any other browsers like Google Chrome and restart the Mac to give a try on Safari. Below is the “ Activity Monitor ” status showing the memory usage of Chrome and Safari when the same webpages are opened.

Chrome Vs Safari on macOS

14. Keep the Updated Safari and macOS Version

Above all the points, ensure to update the OS and Safari to the latest versions. The latest Safari version has additional options to improve the performance of page loading compared to previous versions. For example, latest Safari version will stop the automatic playing videos with audio which essentially will improve the loading speed of the pages with embedded videos.

15. Check Errors on SSD Drive

Low storage space not only slow down Safari but the entire Mac. So, ensure to have sufficient storage space on your Mac. Besides the space, there could be errors on the volume which might cause glitches. Go to “Disk Utility” application and use the “First Aid” option to check the errors on your volume. It will also repair the errors so that you can check that helps to load the pages faster.

Use First Aid to Check Hard Disk

16. Disable Safari Suggestions

Safari will show suggestions and preload websites to help you finding the content quickly. However, these stuffs may affect the overall performance and you can disable them safely. Go to “Safari > Settings… > Search” section and disable the following items against “Smart Search Field” heading:

  • Include Safari Suggestions
  • Enable Quick Website Search

17. Use Empty Home Page and New Tab Page

Some users open Safari with all previously accessed websites. This will obviously reduce the initial loading speed if you have too many tabs to open. Similarly, keeping too many shortcut icons on the browser will not only clutter the home and new tab pages but also affect browser’s performance. You can easily change the setup to open Safari in a new window and use empty page to keep a clean home and new tab pages. Go to “Safari > Settings… > General” section and select the followings:

  • Safari opens with – A new window
  • New windows open with – Empty Page
  • New tabs open with – Empty Page

Set Start Page and Home Page

18. Check Your Network

Sometimes, slow network could be the root cause for slowing things down:

  • Check your router works properly by removing the power cable and restarting.
  • Check with your ISP whether they had done any changes in network settings.
  • Ensure the site or any of the services on the site is not blocked in your country or by your ISP. For example, Google services are blocked in some countries and opening a webpage calling any of the Google services like fonts and JavaScript library links may cause delay in loading the page. In this case, Safari as a browser will not have any influence on slow page loading.

19. Change Network Service Order

The latest versions of MacBook do not have Ethernet port, hence you only have Wi-Fi option. But on the older version, you still have Ethernet and Wi-Fi . In this case, there could be connection problem when you connected to internet via both cable and wireless which may cause slow loading of webpages. You can decide which network you prefer when multiple networks are connected in your network settings.

Go to “Apple” icon on the left top corner and then to “System Preferences… > Network” section. First click on the lock pad saying “Click the lock to prevent further changes”, enter your admin password to enable editing. Select any of the network, click on the gear icon and click “Set Service Order” option.

Change Network Service Order in Mac

You will see another popup screen in which you can drag the order of your network. After changing the order click “OK” button and then click “Apply” button to save the changes.

Drag to Change Order

Wrapping Up

We hope one of the above mentioned solutions should fix Safari slow loading pages on your Mac. Also, we strongly recommend to upgrade to the latest browser and OS versions. If nothing worked out for you then contact Apple support team and check with them about your issue.

I’ve solved similar problems by just disabling an option in the network preference. namely, Uncheck “Limit IP Address Tracking” Just in case, try this!

I forgot to say that I’ve also disable the option of Safari Preference> Privacy> Hide IP Address, which probably controls the same action.

When I updated to Safari 13.1.2 it would now take forever to startup. I disabled the extensions. Now Safari starts instantaneously. No idea why extensions suddenly had this effect. No problems using Safari without them ;-)

Tried these tips but it doesn’t help out much, might be domain issue from my location. I appreciate your help, thanks WebNots.

I’ve tried this and other procedures for speeding up Safari—without success—and finally found one the sped it up 500%. I changed the default search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo.

Mostly, I don’t load pages from the URL (who does?) but via Google. And it’s Google that’s been slowing things down.

Give a try.

I dont believe having chrome or any other browser on my computer with them not being open has any effect on safari. Agreed Chrome takes a lot more resources than safari but not if it is open so deleting them makes no sense.

The worst problem is the latest firefox is much faster and uses less resources than safari. I open a folder every day with about 15 websites on it. Safari chokes on it, Firefox runs it with no problem. I can see the usage direclty via iStat.

I want safari to work so im trying some of your ideas (ive tried the rest without any change to safari) like dns preloading. Hopefully they will help.

I had the same issue but a bug in Dropbox turned out the be the culprit. I had to limit Dropbox Upload bandwidth to 50KB (seems to go faster but nothing else works) to get any responsive network access at all. I’m on MacOS 10.13.6. Hope this helps anyone else.

Thanks for sharing, that should help someone looking for resolving this.

Thanks, man. You solved my problem. I’ve switched to DuckDuckGo search engine and installed its Safari extension. After I had read your article, I went ahead and removed that extension. And everything is flying again!

Thanks again! Cheers

That’s always problems with third-party extensions on browsers. Sometimes they are not updated and not compatible with the browser causing slowness.

In the point number 10 you’ve been a bit inaccurate and didn’t include the calculations of the safari tabs, they are not marked as Google does Google Chrome Helper, but instead, those are just a links like the ones visible on the screenshot you’ve provided. I some test on my iMac 2012 and will agree that native Safari feels better and consumes 30% less compared to the Chrome.

Thanks for your inputs. At the end, it is speed vs power and Chrome definitely loads the pages faster than Safari but consumes more power.

Just use Chrome. Its so much quicker than Safari its no comparison. Launches in a third the time. No stalls on loading web pages. No extensions problems with websites, compatible with YouTube. I switched a few years ago and never looked back.

Already explained about Chrome in the article, it consumes resources compared to Safari. But for a normal usage you will not find any difference.

Actually, right now I’m having better luck with Firefox. It’s not a hog like Chrome and it’s not getting hung up like Safari.

The Safari thing is still annoying, though.

I have no Safari plist in preferences. How odd is that?

The file should be there in the mentioned folder. Hope you are not searching using Spotlight search, it will not appear in the list if you do so. Go to the folder and look for the file.

I searched the Library folder, manually, more than once. There is no plist file.

same here. no such thing is found on that folder.

Same here. My list is sorted alphabetically and there’s nothing with Safari listed.

Number 4 is not possible on Mojave 10.14 or later, you will not find the plist in that location. It is located deep in another folder and has been hidden requiring you to disable SIP in order to remove it…

/Users/$USER/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

seems easier just use Chrome

Chrome will consume lot of memory and CPU resources, also you will loose the native feel of using Mac.

#4 Worked ++++++

#4 (deleting safari preferences) seemed simplest and least disruptive, so I tried it first. It worked like a charm

Thanks for commenting and nice to see this helped you.

Apple also recommends upgrading router firmware or switching routers, and offers instructions for re-enabling DNS prefetching if a firmware update or router switch resolves the issue.

Thanks Dave for your inputs, it should be helpful for the those reading this article.

Thanks so much. I’ve been having this problem for a couple days. I really appreciate your help fixing it so I can get back to work! Kudos for you expertise.

My Macbook Air had similar problems loading images on certain websites like CNN and CNBC. Text would load with blank areas left for the missing images until they finally loaded as much as a minute later. I tried all of the techniques on this and other sites including loading a new copy of El Capitan (I did not wipe the drive first) with no success. I seem to have solved the problem by disconnecting from my Airport Extreme router and logging into a Personal Hotspot created with my iPhone 6S Plus. The sites loaded instantly when connected to my phone and continue to load instantly after I connected back to my Airport Extreme.

This is pretty easy to try if anyone else is having similar problems. Note that my Mac Mini connected to the same Airport Extreme worked fine through the whole time so I have no idea why this happened or why it now works.

Thanks for sharing, it should help someone.

Common Reasons for Safari Not Loading

Safari is a popular web browser known for its sleek interface and seamless user experience. However, users may encounter instances where Safari fails to load webpages, causing frustration and inconvenience. Understanding the common reasons behind Safari not loading can help users troubleshoot and resolve these issues effectively.

Poor Internet Connection : A weak or unstable internet connection can hinder Safari from loading webpages properly. This can occur due to network congestion, signal interference, or connectivity issues with the Wi-Fi router .

Outdated Safari Version : Using an outdated version of Safari may lead to compatibility issues with certain websites and web applications. It's essential to keep Safari updated to access the latest features and security enhancements.

Troubleshooting Steps for Safari Loading Issues

When Safari encounters loading issues, it can disrupt the browsing experience and hinder access to essential web content. To address these challenges effectively, users can implement a series of troubleshooting steps to diagnose and resolve the underlying issues. By following these proactive measures, users can regain seamless access to webpages and enhance their overall browsing experience.

1. Check Internet Connection Stability

The first step in troubleshooting Safari loading issues is to verify the stability and strength of the internet connection. Users should ensure that their device is connected to a reliable network and that the Wi-Fi signal is strong and consistent. If using a cellular connection, confirming adequate signal strength is crucial. Addressing any connectivity issues can significantly improve Safari's loading performance.

2. Restart Safari and Refresh Webpage

Simple yet effective, restarting the Safari browser and refreshing the problematic webpage can often resolve loading issues. This action clears temporary data and reloads the webpage, potentially bypassing any transient obstacles that impede the loading process.

3. Clear Safari Cache and Cookies

Accumulated cache and cookies can impact Safari's functionality, leading to loading problems. Clearing the browser's cache and cookies can eliminate outdated or corrupted data, potentially resolving loading issues and enhancing overall browsing performance.

4. Verify DNS Settings

Incorrect Domain Name System (DNS) settings can hinder Safari's ability to resolve website addresses, leading to loading failures. Users can verify and adjust their DNS settings to ensure they are configured correctly, potentially resolving DNS-related loading issues.

5. Update Safari and macOS

Keeping Safari and the underlying macOS up to date is crucial for maintaining optimal browser performance. Updating to the latest versions can address compatibility issues, security vulnerabilities, and other underlying factors that may contribute to loading problems.

6. Disable Extensions and Plugins

Safari extensions and plugins can sometimes conflict with webpages, causing loading issues. Temporarily disabling or removing problematic extensions and plugins can help identify and address compatibility issues, potentially resolving loading problems.

By following these troubleshooting steps, users can systematically diagnose and address Safari loading issues, restoring seamless access to web content and ensuring a smoother browsing experience. These proactive measures empower users to take control of Safari's performance and address potential obstacles that may impede webpage loading.

How to Clear Safari Cache and Cookies

Clearing the cache and cookies in Safari is a fundamental troubleshooting step to address loading issues and enhance the browser's performance. The cache stores temporary website data, while cookies retain information such as login credentials and site preferences. Over time, these accumulated data can impact Safari's functionality, leading to loading problems and potential privacy concerns. By clearing the cache and cookies, users can effectively refresh Safari's data storage, potentially resolving loading issues and improving overall browsing performance.

Steps to Clear Safari Cache and Cookies:

Open Safari Preferences : Begin by launching the Safari browser and accessing the "Safari" menu located in the top-left corner of the screen. From the drop-down menu, select "Preferences" to access Safari's settings.

Navigate to Privacy Settings : Within the Preferences window, navigate to the "Privacy" tab. This section houses essential privacy and data management settings, including options to manage website data such as cache and cookies.

Manage Website Data : In the Privacy tab, locate and click on the "Manage Website Data" button. This action opens a new window displaying a comprehensive list of websites that have stored data in Safari, including cache and cookies.

Remove Cache and Cookies : Within the "Manage Website Data" window, users can review the list of websites and their associated data. To clear the cache and cookies, click on the "Remove All" button. This action effectively clears all cached data and cookies stored by websites in Safari.

Confirm Clearing Data : Upon clicking "Remove All," Safari will prompt users to confirm the action. Users can review the list of websites and the amount of data being removed before finalizing the process.

Restart Safari : After clearing the cache and cookies, it is advisable to restart the Safari browser to ensure that the changes take effect. Users can close and relaunch Safari to initiate a fresh browsing session with cleared data storage.

By following these steps, users can effectively clear Safari's cache and cookies, refreshing the browser's data storage and potentially resolving loading issues. This proactive measure not only addresses performance concerns but also promotes privacy by removing accumulated website data. Clearing the cache and cookies in Safari is a simple yet impactful step in maintaining a smooth and reliable browsing experience.

Checking Internet Connection and DNS Settings

Ensuring a stable internet connection is paramount when troubleshooting Safari loading issues. A weak or unstable connection can significantly impede the browser's ability to load webpages effectively. Users should first verify that their device is connected to a reliable network, whether it be a Wi-Fi connection or cellular data. It's essential to check for any network congestion, signal interference, or connectivity issues with the Wi-Fi router that may be affecting the internet connection.

In addition to the internet connection, examining the Domain Name System (DNS) settings is crucial. The DNS is responsible for translating domain names into IP addresses, enabling browsers to locate and load websites. Incorrect DNS settings can lead to difficulties in resolving website addresses, resulting in loading failures. Users can verify and adjust their DNS settings to ensure they are configured correctly, potentially resolving DNS-related loading issues.

To check the internet connection and DNS settings on macOS, users can follow these steps:

Checking Internet Connection :

  • Ensure that the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection is active and stable.
  • Verify that other devices connected to the same network are not experiencing connectivity issues.
  • Consider restarting the router or modem to address any potential network disruptions.

Verifying DNS Settings :

  • Access the "Network" settings within the macOS System Preferences.
  • Select the active network connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and click on "Advanced."
  • Navigate to the "DNS" tab to review and modify the DNS server addresses if necessary.
  • Users can consider using public DNS servers such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) for improved reliability.

By meticulously examining the internet connection and DNS settings, users can identify potential factors contributing to Safari loading issues. Addressing any connectivity issues and ensuring correct DNS configuration can significantly enhance the browser's ability to load webpages seamlessly. These proactive measures empower users to take control of their network settings and optimize the browsing experience on Safari.

Updating Safari and macOS

Keeping Safari and the underlying macOS up to date is crucial for maintaining optimal browser performance and overall system stability. Regular updates introduce new features, security enhancements, and compatibility improvements, addressing potential factors that may contribute to Safari loading issues. By ensuring that both Safari and macOS are running the latest versions, users can mitigate compatibility issues, security vulnerabilities, and performance concerns, ultimately enhancing their browsing experience.

Importance of Updates

Safari updates often include bug fixes, performance optimizations, and support for the latest web technologies. These updates address known issues that may affect webpage loading, such as rendering errors, JavaScript compatibility, and security vulnerabilities. By staying current with Safari updates, users can benefit from improved webpage rendering, faster performance, and enhanced security measures, reducing the likelihood of encountering loading issues.

Similarly, macOS updates encompass a wide range of system improvements, including enhancements to networking, file system management, and core technologies that impact Safari's functionality. These updates can address underlying system-level issues that may indirectly affect Safari's performance, such as network connectivity, resource allocation, and memory management. By updating macOS, users can ensure a stable and optimized environment for Safari to operate within, minimizing potential obstacles to webpage loading.

Updating Safari

To update Safari, users can follow these steps:

  • Open the App Store on macOS.
  • Navigate to the "Updates" tab to check for available Safari updates.
  • If a Safari update is available, click "Update" to initiate the installation process.
  • Once the update is complete, relaunch Safari to apply the changes.

Updating macOS

To update macOS, users can follow these steps:

  • Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences."
  • Choose "Software Update" to check for available macOS updates.
  • If an update is available, click "Update Now" to begin the installation process.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update, and restart the system if prompted.

By regularly updating Safari and macOS, users can proactively address potential factors contributing to Safari loading issues. These updates not only enhance the browser's performance and security but also ensure compatibility with the latest web technologies and standards. Embracing a proactive approach to software updates empowers users to maintain a reliable and optimized browsing experience on Safari, minimizing the impact of potential loading challenges.

Disabling Safari Extensions and Plugins

Safari extensions and plugins, while offering additional functionality and customization options, can sometimes interfere with the browser's ability to load webpages effectively. When users encounter loading issues in Safari, disabling extensions and plugins can be a strategic troubleshooting step to identify and address compatibility concerns.

Identifying Problematic Extensions and Plugins

The first step in addressing loading issues related to extensions and plugins is to identify any potentially problematic add-ons. Users can navigate to the Safari Preferences and access the Extensions and Plugins sections to review the installed components. By examining the list of extensions and plugins, users can pinpoint any that may be causing conflicts or hindering webpage loading.

Disabling Extensions and Plugins

Once problematic extensions and plugins are identified, users can proceed to disable them to assess their impact on Safari's performance. This can be achieved by accessing the Extensions and Plugins sections within Safari Preferences and toggling the switches to disable the selected components. After disabling specific extensions and plugins, users should relaunch Safari and attempt to load the problematic webpages to gauge any improvements in loading performance.

Testing and Re-Enabling Components

After disabling extensions and plugins, users can systematically test Safari's loading performance to determine the impact of the disabled components. If the loading issues are resolved after disabling certain extensions or plugins, users can infer that those components were contributing to the problem. Subsequently, users may choose to re-enable the components one by one, testing Safari's performance after each re-enablement to pinpoint the specific extension or plugin causing the loading issues.

Removing Problematic Components

In cases where re-enabling a specific extension or plugin triggers the loading issues to resurface, users may consider removing the problematic component entirely. This can be achieved by uninstalling the extension or plugin from Safari, effectively eliminating its influence on the browser's performance. By removing problematic components, users can streamline Safari's functionality and mitigate potential conflicts that impede webpage loading.

Proactive Extension and Plugin Management

To maintain a smooth browsing experience, users are encouraged to proactively manage their installed extensions and plugins. Regularly reviewing and updating these components can help prevent compatibility issues and performance concerns. Additionally, users should consider the reputation and reliability of extensions and plugins before installation, ensuring that they are from trusted sources and compatible with the current Safari version.

By systematically addressing extensions and plugins, users can effectively troubleshoot and resolve loading issues in Safari, optimizing the browser's performance and ensuring a seamless browsing experience. Disabling, testing, and managing extensions and plugins empower users to take control of Safari's functionality and address potential obstacles that may hinder webpage loading.

Safari Not Loading Images on Your iPhone? 9 Ways to Fix It

Browsing in Safari can be frustrating when images aren't loading up. But instead of panicking, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve it.

Are you having trouble loading images in Safari and finding a solution to fix this issue? Look no further.

Safari can fail to load images due to various reasons, but we'll discuss why and walk you through some troubleshooting steps to fix this problem.

1. Make Sure Your Internet Connection Is Stable

Let's start with a basic solution. Your unstable internet connection could be why Safari can't load images on your iPhone. Safari requires a stable internet connection to work properly.

You can check the speed of your cellular data or Wi-Fi connection by visiting one of the many speed test websites available. If your cellular connectivity seems poor on your iPhone, enable Airplane Mode for a few seconds and then turn it off to refresh your network or switch to a Wi-Fi network.

2. Force Quit and Relaunch Safari

If your internet works fine, another simple fix for solving images not loading on Safari would be to force quit the app and relaunch it. With this method, you can easily fix any minor bug or glitch that might be preventing Safari from loading images on your iPhone.

Swipe up and hold to reveal the background app on your iPhone's Home Screen. Look for the Safari app and swipe up to force close the app.

You can also try a different browser to see if the website you're trying to open loads correctly on it. It could be an issue with the website and not Safari, or maybe that website isn't compatible with Safari.

3. Disable Low Data Mode

Using your iPhone in Low Data Mode may help reduce overall cellular data usage by limiting the data your iPhone can access for background tasks.

Still, it can also prevent images from loading on Safari. Turning off this feature can fix the images not loading in Safari issue.

Here's what you need to do to enable Low Data Mode for a cellular connection:

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and select Cellular .
  • Tap Cellular Data Options .
  • Toggle off Low Data Mode .

Likewise, to enable Low Data Mode for a Wi-Fi connection, follow these steps:

  • Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi .
  • Tap the Info (i) button next to the Wi-Fi network you're connected to.
  • Toggle of Low Data Mode .

Now, relaunch Safari and see if it loads images as intended.

4. Enable JavaScript

JavaScript is widely used on websites to display images and other dynamic elements. If you accidentally turned off the JavaScript option in Safari settings, this could be why images aren't loading in Safari on your iPhone. To fix this, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and select Safari .
  • Tap the Advanced option at the bottom.
  • Enable the JavaScript toggle.

Now, check if you're able to load images while browsing Safari.

5. Disable Ad Blockers

There's no denying that ad blockers are tremendously helpful in removing unwanted ads from a webpage and improving the overall browsing experience.

While these extensions can improve your Safari experience , they may result in photos not loading in Safari on your iPhone. To solve this, disable these ad blockers by following these instructions:

  • Under the General section, tap the Extension option.
  • Select the Ad Blocker extension from the list.
  • Disable the Allow Extension toggle.

6. Remove Content Restrictions

The Screen Time feature on your iPhone lets you set app content restrictions and time limits. If you've enabled this feature, it might interfere with Safari and prevent it from loading images.

To remove content restrictions for Safari on your iPhone, here's what you need to do:

  • Launch the Settings app and select Screen Time .
  • Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions .

This method is also one of the best fixes when Safari isn't working on your iPhone .

7. Clear Browsing Data

If you frequently use Safari, it will accumulate data over time. This data can become corrupted and prevent Safari from loading images on your iPhone. Clearing your browser's cache is a common troubleshooting method and is well-known for resolving problems and removing temporary glitches.

Besides, if you haven't cleaned your browsing history in a while, it may impact Safari's speed and performance. To clear Safari's data from your iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Head to the Settings app and select Safari .
  • Scroll down and tap on Clear History and Website Data .

This method will unclutter the browsing data and speed up Safari if it takes forever to load .

8. Disconnect Your VPN

VPNs are a fantastic way to hide your location and other private information from websites you visit. However, VPNs usually re-route your data through a succession of remote servers to keep it untraceable, producing network latency that can prevent pictures from loading in Safari.

Disconnecting the VPN might solve the issue if you're using a VPN while browsing Safari. You can either do this directly from the VPN app installed on your iPhone or go to Settings > VPN and toggle of VPN Status .

9. Update Your iPhone

iOS updates can sometimes carry bugs that could affect certain apps, but Apple is always quick to address such issues. So, if you haven't updated your iPhone in a while, now would be the right time to do so.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update and wait until your device finishes checking for updates. If a new iOS version is available, tap Download and Install .

Enjoy Safari Images on Your iPhone

It can be frustrating when pictures don't load in Safari, as they're essential to your web browsing experience. However, you can use the troubleshooting steps we discussed here to fix this issue quickly. If you're still out of luck, you should contact Apple Support or make an Apple Store appointment at a Genius Bar for in-person assistance.

Only a few weeks ago another Windows update was causing major problems for those that downloaded it, but Microsoft is back with the same antics, this time with update KB5035853 that began rolling out on March 12.

The update is rolling out and is automatically installed on millions of Windows 11 PCs due to the fact it's a security update and not a driver or feature update. The extensive delivery means that large numbers of people are potentially affected by updates that cause problems and sadly that already seems to be the case with KB5035853.

The issues, first spotted by Windows Latest , also appear to be wide ranging from blue screen or BSOD crashes, stuttering and poor performance. This thread on Reddit had dozens of users reporting issues before it was locked. Some users reported that their systems used AMD processors, although there's certainly not enough evidence to point any fingers there just yet.

Another user reported that their audio software was working the previous evening, but the morning after the update was installed, it was stuttering and performed poorly. Uninstalling the update has fixed the problem for many that found it had been installed, although some reported they were stuck in a dreaded blue screen loop.

The news comes as Microsoft's Windows Update team has been plagued by issue-ridden updates, which caused issues with Windows Explorer, the taskbar and other performance-related issues and crashes. Annoyingly, update KB5034765 caused error messages that appeared to be PC memory-related sending users on wild goose chases when troubleshooting their devices.

A recent Windows Update is cause problems for a lot of users

If you suddenly experience similar problems to those described above, it's worth seeing if the update has been recently installed on your PC. To do this, open the Start Menu and type update, then click on check for updates. This will show you any updates that have been installed and are awaiting for a system restart to complete the installation. If the update KB5035853 isn't listed in the top list, click on update history to see if it's previously been installed.

How to uninstall update KB5035853

If you want to uninstall it to investigate if it's causing issues with your system, head to the bottom of the update history page and you'll see the option to uninstall updates. If the update has been installed it will appear here. If your system isn't suffering from any issues then it's worth leaving the update installed.

The update was, according to its information page , meant to fix earlier issues that saw another Windows update get stuck at 96 percent amongst other things. According to Bleepingcomputer the update also includes:

  • Support for USB 80Gbps, doubling the bandwidth of USB 40Gbps.
  • Ensuring games stay installed on secondary drives.
  • Fixing printer alignment issues.
  • Resolving Windows Settings Home page freezing.
  • Addressing networking problems with automatic Wi-Fi switching.

Some of these changes do sound related to a lot of the reports on Reddit, but as yet Microsoft says its unaware of any issues with this particular update. I'll be updating this article and continuing to report on the issues with Microsoft Windows updates so follow me here on Forbes or Facebook for the latest news.

Australia's housing crisis has become a fierce political battle that could have major implications for the next federal election

Analysis Australia's housing crisis has become a fierce political battle that could have major implications for the next federal election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese speaks to the press club in a stern, close-up shot

A fierce battle over housing is set to intensify and define the next federal election as Labor, the Coalition and the Greens target a growing cohort of voters who believe they've been locked out of home ownership for life.

The great Australian dream of owning your own home has been fading for a long time — there's nothing new about this. But the crisis is now baked in — and it has arguably become the big generational disrupter, changing votes and threatening to hurt the government at the next poll.

The Greens have successfully put housing on the mainstream political radar. Now the Liberal Party — who are strategising about how they can become relevant and attractive to the younger voters they've been losing in swathes — are joining the debate after privately acknowledging they've been missing in action on this pivotal issue.

In the middle stands the Albanese government. Burnt and scarred by their crazy-brave promise to reform negative gearing in 2019 — partly leading to them losing that election — they have been running from any suggestion that they might again look at contentious changes to tax on property ownership.

Labor insiders privately acknowledge they are getting politically smashed on housing, with various solutions being floated internally to address it.

There is also deep frustration that they are not getting adequate credit for the suite of policies they have already announced: There are 17 policies in total and $26 billion in new funding to address Australia's housing crisis.

Labor has argued that the answer to this problem is supply, supply and more supply. But supply isn't materialising fast enough and migration numbers are putting further strain on the market .

A massive headache for the government

Some Labor insiders tell me they believe there needs to be a shake-up — even a reshuffle — to ensure the role of housing minister is held by one of their best communicators. Housing Minister Julie Collins has one of the lower public profiles in the government and has been out-manoeuvred by Greens housing spokesperson Max Chandler-Mather who has, to the constant irritation of the government, seized the territory on this lighting rod issue.

Several of Collins's colleagues have described her as a solid minister; some also say she is having little cut-through where it matters most. But most concede the government needs to take collective responsibility for the housing crisis and debate — and the looming budget in May provides a key opportunity.

Still, the reset on this issue will need to run deeper than communication.

Collins gestures with one hand while speaking at the despatch box in the House of Representatives.

Labor has several housing policies — including its help-to-buy scheme designed to assist 10,000 homebuyers a year through shared equity. It is currently stuck in parliament because the Coalition and Greens aren't backing it.

"We know we've got a lot of work to do," Collins told Sky News at the weekend. "Obviously having the Liberals voting against more housing in the parliament is very unhelpful, and what I would say to the Liberals is they should be supporting housing measures in the parliament instead of voting against them at every opportunity."

This week the combination of high migration figures and news that new housing construction is falling behind schedule triggered a massive headache for the government and delivered and the opposition a strong attack line.

The government is working with states and territories to meet the housing accord target of 1.2 million homes in five years, but the building industry is raising concerns about its capacity to deliver, with a construction worker shortage and state infrastructure projects hoovering up workers. While the government is offering state and local councils $3.5 billion to fast-track construction, some are worried that the target starting in a few months won't be met.

Where's the Coalition?

In Question Time, Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor asked why Australia's adult population had increased by over 1 million people since the Albanese government had taken office, while home building completions were only a quarter of that figure.

It cut deep. NDIS and Government Services Minister Bill Shorten — who is known for calling a spade a spade — said there was a "crisis out there" in how to balance immigration and housing.

The government announced it would begin enforcing tougher visa rules for foreign students starting this weekend, with increased English language requirements for student and graduate visas. The government will also get the power to suspend education providers from recruiting international students if they repeatedly break rules.

"The reality is, though, that there is a crisis out there in terms of how we make sure we balance immigration and housing," Shorten said.

A man wearing a suit and glasses

Coalition figures privately admit they've been too slow to respond to this issue. Given the housing crisis has become a barbecue-stopper conversation, it is surprising that the Coalition has taken so long to develop targeted policies to address it.

They are now trying to sharpen their focus with Peter Dutton's announcement of Andrew Bragg as the shadow assistant minister for home ownership in the March reshuffle.

Bragg has since floated the idea that home owners should be able to pay their super into their mortgage offset accounts — in an attempt to expand the Coalition's housing policy, announced by Scott Morrison in 2022 , to allow first home buyers to use their super to purchase property.

Bragg now says he will push for first home buyers to be able to withdraw more than the $50,000 proposed before the 2022 election. While he dismisses the criticism by some experts that this would only increase house prices, Liberals are not all convinced the policy has mainstream appeal, with some holding concerns about it being painted as a raid on young people's super — a claim they contest. Many believe the party needs to be looking for other policy responses.

'Who do we fight for?'

Menzies MP Keith Wolahan believes the revival of a shattered Liberal Party relies on boosting home ownership. He is one of a handful of Coalition MPs who are prepared to go where so many fear going – putting the tax treatment of houses as an investment tool on the table for debate.

His leader Peter Dutton hasn't been prepared to go there. But Wolahan, a millennial, says the crisis needs a fundamental rethink.

"The disconnect between average wages and median house prices risks killing the Australian dream," he tells me. "Success in life will become less about hard work and more about the lottery of birth or 'marrying well'. Our children should study the works of Jane Austen; not be forced to live them."

A man in a suit gestures while talking.

Governments need to answer this question, he says: "Is the residential property market just another investment class? If their answer is an unqualified 'yes', then we will speak only of supply and say nothing of quality and distribution. We will supercharge high-density build-to-rent [properties] over family-friendly build-to-own [homes]."

Conversely, Wolahan says: "If we are serious about home ownership and aspiration, we will pursue policies that both boost supply and tip the hand of first home buyers over investors. Right now, there is an imbalance the other way, particularly for established stock. This invites a political question: who do we fight for?"

That question is one that the big parties will need to grapple with if they hope to sway younger voters.

Demography is destiny. And the demography freight train is coming for both parties.

I want to leave you with a quote from the Australian Election Study's analysis of the 2022 election, which puts this conundrum in stark terms:

"How the Coalition addresses this overwhelming deficit of support among younger generations is perhaps the single biggest question confronting Australian politics."

Patricia Karvelas is the presenter of Q+A, which is tackling the housing crisis tonight at 9:35pm on ABC TV, RN Breakfast and co-host of the Party Room podcast.

3 Body Problem Has A Five Body Problem

Adapting cixin liu’s three-body problem was always a tall order..

3 Body Problem Has A Five Body Problem - IGN Image

This story contains spoilers for 3 Body Problem on Netflix, streaming now.

The process of adapting the novel The Three-Body Problem was always going to be a tough one. Chinese author Cixin Liu’s Hugo Award-winning sci-fi epic is an intensely cerebral piece of work that covers decades of history and delves into a veritable minefield of scientific and ethical ideas. The story of first contact with an alien race jumps between several characters, includes a video game world dominated by theorists in cosplay, and is explicitly Chinese in its perspective. But it’s not hard to see what David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones, saw in this material that would make it ideal for a lavish Netflix adaptation. After all, they’re the guys who took a grand fantasy series inspired by English history but with added dragons and turned it into a worldwide phenomenon (just don’t ask about the final season). They could give this one a go, right?

In the novel, the main protagonist of the modern-day segments is Wang Miao, a nanotechnology professor who is reluctantly conscripted by the police to help them investigate the various suicides of a group of scientists , some of whom he knew personally. He soon begins to see numbers flashing before his eyes, a countdown leading to something he has no idea about. As the vision eats away at his mental state and distances him from his family, he discovers a strange immersive video game that many of the scientists played before they died. The Three Body Problem of the title is a highly sophisticated MMORPG where players are tasked with solving the mystery of a strange alien planet that is constantly on the verge of destruction.

This one character is divided into five in the Netflix series , a quintet of former physics students bound together after their professor dies by suicide: Augie (Eiza González) has spun her scientific prowess into a multi-billion-dollar business in micro-fibers; Saul (Jovan Adepo) was their late professor's assistant until her passing; Jin (Jess Hong) works in another lab; Will (Alex Sharp) dropped out to become a high school teacher; and Jack (John Bradley) sold out his ethics to become an obnoxious snacks mogul. It’s a major change, to divvy up one point-of-view to five, and in doing so, 3 Body Problem makes its biggest error.

The series spreads the narrative between these five, albeit extremely unevenly. Some characters get more to do than others, but even the most involved protagonists are left lacking a thorough motivation. Augie is the one who sees the countdown floating over her eyes, but it’s Jin and Jack who enter the video game. Saul, meanwhile, mostly gets stoned and does nothing for the majority of the season, while Will struggles with a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The slightly retitled adaptation, 3 Body Problem, which premiered on Netflix on March 21, is certainly admirable in its approach to adapting the novel. These eight episodes encompass almost the entire core narrative of the first book (there are three in the series, plus a publisher-approved fanfiction). For most of the eight-hour running time, 3 Body Problem hits many of the beats of Liu’s novel. Indeed, it’s as though they’re ticking off the major notes as part of a series speedrun. The key issue, however, is the decision to move the lion’s share of the action out of China and center it on an ensemble of newly created characters who are not as interesting as their book counterparts and often feel superfluous to the action.

It’s not hard to see why such a decision was made. It expands the ensemble and allows the series to be more focused on a diverse array of characters rather than one Chinese professor whose dense jargon is often tough for the casual reader/viewer to fully absorb. Each is meant to represent a different facet of the wider philosophical debate that permeates 3 Body Problem , but often it feels slapdash in execution. Jin is the most adept at navigating both the video game and the wider mystery, but she’s often saddled with the needless comic intrusions of Jack, who exists to be the smug skeptic who constantly reminds the audience that this is all a bit silly. It’s harder to emotionally latch onto any one character because the narrative flits quickly between them and seems unsure of how to integrate them into the drama fully.

As the scientist suicides mystery is investigated, the story leaps back to 1960s China, in the grip of the Cultural Revolution. Ye Wenjie watches on helplessly as her father is brutally murdered as a traitor by his own students. Later, she is conscripted by the military to aid them in a secret operation in a remote radar base. Their mission is to send signals into the outer reaches of space and make first contact with extraterrestrial beings. What happens here will change the fate of humanity.

In the book, Wang is fully defined as the unwitting protagonist. He is capable, intellectually inquisitive, and always aware of the stakes he faces. The magnitude of the suicides and ensuing fallout, leading to the revelation of first contact with an alien species, weighs on him heavily throughout the novel. He offers the clearest perspective of this terrifying future and is appropriately cerebral in his approach, but not devoid of emotion. Because he’s also a scientist, he is also knowledgeable in the various ethical quandaries at play as well as the complicated jargon required to dissect the highly complex problem at the heart of the story.

Wang is often accompanied by Shi Qiang in the book version, a detective and counter-terrorism specialist, nicknamed "Da Shi." He is crude and blunt in his demeanor but crucial to the story. Where Wang is overwhelmed by the science, Shi is more hands-on. Their partnership is crucial. In the Netflix series, Da Shi is now a British detective brought on to investigate the suicides and monitor the five friends who are connected to them. Benedict Wong, a reliably excellent actor , does what he can with a poorly defined stoic detective role who mostly talks in sardonic whispers. It weakens the mystery aspect of the story to have the one person dedicated to solving the case stuck in the margins and barely interacting with the narrative for so long.

What's the best sci-fi series on Netflix?

3 Body Problem falls foul of an issue that we often see with adaptations of non-English language material, particularly anime: in an attempt to make the story universal (read: marketable to Americans), the story has become less intriguing and not even all that accessible. John Bradley is particularly wasted as the comedy figure who undercuts the grandiose quality of the book for fear that viewers might see this drama as daft. It’s a major error because the story is deliberately bleak and shouldn’t be diluted (imagine if Game of Thrones endlessly came to a halt to let characters comment on how nonsensical those dragons are). These additions also end up absorbing screen time away from Ye’s story, which desperately needs more room to breathe. Watching her go from a terrified adolescent to the arbiter of a future alien invasion in two episodes renders her massive decision into an annoyed quirk.

The differences are all the more glaring when you watch the other adaptation of this book: Three-Body, released by CCTV in China and available to watch on Peacock in the US. The series is a whopping 30 episodes long, so it obviously has more time to develop the plot and its characters while remaining stridently faithful to the novel. While it is an imperfect series – all the non-Chinese characters are hilariously miscast and the VFX in the video game scenes aren’t as dazzling as they need to be – but the commitment to fully rendering these core protagonists from page to screen is especially admirable. This is crucial for the development of Ye, who feels like an afterthought in the Netflix version despite being the reason everything is happening. Both she and Wang have real personalities in the 30-episode adaptation. We see more of Wang with his family, more of his empathy for his deceased friends, and more of his bromance with Shi Qiang. Having almost four times more episodes to get the job done than Netflix will obviously allow for that, but it only further emphasizes how curiously rushed the American version is, and how little room we have to breathe as a viewer.

Overall, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem has a lot to admire . It really is pretty impressive how much of this heavy and ambitious novel they got into eight hours, and how vividly reimagined the video game is with a nine-figure budget. But in their eagerness to translate something culturally specific and narratively esoteric into an all-pleasing spectacle, it’s the human heart of the story that’s been left behind.
