Best for solo travelers: Tauck's Yuletide Spirit

Solo travelers looking to enjoy a river cruise without the hassle of a single supplement should check out Tauck's Christmas market itineraries. On all European river cruises, including the seven-night Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise, the line waives the single supplement on Category 1 riverview cabins.

If your cruise starts in Amsterdam, you don't have to be on the ship until 4 p.m. so use the morning to walk around town or get tickets to tour the Anne Frank House. Fares include meals, drinks during meals and happy hour, Wi-Fi, a library, excursions, bike rentals and a fitness center. Gratuity is not included for hotel stays and meals during the land portion of your trip.

Best for unique destinations: AmaWaterways' Gems of Southeast Europe

While many river cruises traverse the waters around France, Germany and Austria, AmaWaterways ' Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary takes guests to Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The seven-night cruise sails between Budapest and Giurgiu along the Danube River.

If your sailing starts in Budapest, you'll need to arrive a day early if you plan to explore the city; the cruise does not offer excursions here. European Christmas market cruises can last everything between 4-15 days. It’s all a question of your budget and available time. I recommend at least 7 days in order to absorb the enchanting Christmas vibes of that time in Europe.

Where to go on a European Christmas market cruise?

There are several major rivers in Europe that are particularly suited for Christmas market cruises.

The most famous one is probably the romantic Rhine as it takes you to fairy-tale villages and towns that are world-famous for their Christmas markets: Strasbourg, Mainz, Koblenz , Cologne, romantic Rhine valley ,… These cruises take you to the biggest Christmas Markets in Europe in a very comfortable way.

I particularly like the castles and small villages of the Rhine valley with their cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses and their location next to the Rhine river.

However, also the Danube will take you to, particularly quaint Christmas markets of important German, Austrian, and Hungarian towns such as Nürnberg Christmas market, Regensburg, Vienna or Budapest.

When to go on a European Christmas market cruise?

Most Christmas markets in Europe open already by the end of November or the first weekend of December. Most of them last until New Year’s Eve.

It’s going to be cold, thus pack enough warm clothes as temperatures can get below 0°C in December. But don’t worry; your boat cabin will be nicely warm!

What to eat on European Christmas markets?

AARP's Guide to Europe’s Christmas Market Cruises

It's not too early to book these popular river journeys along the danube, main and rhine for 2022​​​.

Cruising Europe’s rivers is an increasingly popular way to explore quaint towns and historic cities in countries such as France and Germany, especially in summer. But another peak time for these journeys is around the holidays, the season for Christmas market cruises — immensely popular sailings on small river ships that offer guests easy on-and-off access to these festive markets that transform city and village centers across the continent into magical winter wonderlands.

The continued uncertainty about COVID-19  and the complicated pandemic-related entry requirements and safety measures prompted many people to skip cruising Europe in 2021 and book their Christmas cruises for 2022 or 2023 — joining travelers who rescheduled their canceled 2020 cruises for later years.

That means the 2022 holiday sailings have been filling up even faster than usual, says Susy Schreiner, owner of Azure Blue Vacations in Seattle, who started booking the 2022 holiday cruises in September to ensure her clients got their preferred choices. 

If you wait, she adds, your pickings will probably be slim and you’re unlikely to get a price break because fares typically don’t dip for these popular trips.

Schreiner notes that you’ll have to pay a nonrefundable deposit but that your dates are movable. “The cruise lines know there has to be some flexibility,” she says.

COVID-19 update

• COVID-19-related rules vary by country, so travelers should do their research, and check the CDC’s  country-specific recommendations .

• Check directly with the cruise line for policies regarding proof of vaccination, testing or any other requirements to board.

Prices for these cruises vary widely. You can spend as little as $1,195 per person (all prices are for double-occupancy) for a lower-deck cabin with no balcony on four-night sailings on Emerald Cruises to more than $20,000 per person for a top-of-the line suite on a 10-night sailing with the luxury Crystal line. But generally, prices on most lines run about $500 or $600 per person a night for an upper-deck cabin with a balcony.

What is a Christmas market cruise?

Europe’s oldest Christmas markets date back to the 1400s and 1500s, with Dresden, Germany, and Strasbourg, France, each claiming the oldest. Budapest, Prague and Vienna also boast some of the original markets. But over the past 20 years, these holiday people-pleasers have dramatically expanded across Europe, and in more recent years they have become increasingly popular for river cruise lines, which typically operate holiday sailings along the Danube, Main and Rhine Rivers. The cruises hit some of Europe’s top markets in Austria, France, Germany and Hungary — as well as smaller markets in the Alsace region of France and Slovakia.

“It’s just gorgeous,” says Mary Kate Beard, 77, of Guntersville, Alabama, who took a holiday cruise along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, and wouldn’t hesitate to do another one. “It was like being in a fairy land every night,” she says of the brightly decorated towns, giant Christmas trees and festive atmosphere across the markets.

Brenda Kyllo, vice president of strategic alliances for AmaWaterways, thinks Americans are drawn to the markets “because the spirit of Christmas in Europe is stronger and less commercial than here,” not to mention their long history and deeply rooted local traditions, their arts and handicrafts, and the tasty local foods sold at each market.

Kyllo compares the Christmas market cruises to the springtime tulip cruises in Holland and Belgium: “Both run for about a five- to six-week period and both have become much more mainstream experiences.”

While the cruise itineraries may seem similar to the regular Danube and Rhine sailings, guests say they have “a totally different feel,” given that they mix traditional day tours with visits to the festive Christmas markets in late afternoon and into the evening. “In Austria we went to a church [in Oberndorf] and listened to an organ concert and they did ‘Silent Night.’ I thought, ‘Oh my god, this is where Silent Night was written!’ ” says Kathie Elowitt, 78, of Hidden Hills, California, of her Uniworld cruise on the Danube between Budapest and Passau, Germany.

“It definitely puts you in the spirit of the holidays,” says Camille Cutrone Holubar, president of Vista Travel Consultants, a Virtuoso-affiliated travel agency in New Jersey, who has taken six of the cruises.

Why families love them

Like the markets, the ships themselves are decked out with Christmas trees and  holiday decorations throughout. Plus, activities and excursions are holiday focused, making them great for families and multigenerational travel . “More and more families and multigenerational groups are seeing the value and ease. And I think Christmas markets will continue to drive interest ... as we talk about people coming out of COVID wanting to have more family time and making up for lost time,” says Azure Blue Vacations’ Schreiner, who’s taking a group of 12 on a Danube cruise at Christmastime this year.

Uniworld has designated select sailings of its Classic Christmas Markets itinerary from Nuremberg to Frankfurt as family-oriented cruises called the Generations Collection. On those cruises, the line offers kid-friendly menus, onboard activities such as cooking classes and dessert-making for kids, craft workshops, games, movie nights and more.

On AmaWaterways cruises, the ships redecorate every sailing so that guests can pick a tree to adorn with gingerbread cookies they make onboard, Kyllo says. Santa also makes a visit, although Kyllo notes that this year guests may need to keep their distance, due to COVID-19.

How to choose a cruise

While travelers may see many of the same products across the bigger markets, each also has its own history and unique style of Christmas ornaments and arts and crafts. In Germany, for instance, you’ll find more wood crafts such as hand-carved nutcrackers, while in Austria you’ll see more glass ornaments and snow globes, which were invented there.        

“Everything has to be locally made... That’s one thing I loved,” says Beard, who collects nativity sets. “There’s no telling how many I bought,” she adds.

Beard also loaded up on chocolate and Christmas ornaments that she gave as gifts to her grandchildren and friends. Most of the items were inexpensive. “I spent $2 to $5 on the ornaments, and just $5 to $10 on most of the nativity sets. You can get good bargains on things you don’t see everywhere,” she notes, though “some items are very expensive.”        

Visiting the markets isn’t just about shopping, however. Some cruisers are content just browsing through them and enjoying the merry atmosphere.

“What attracted me was the community,” says Elowitt. “They set up all these booths and decorate them and all the local people come, and they have music. We didn’t buy the products. We just listened to the music and walked around and took pictures.”

Another draw is the food, with each market offering its country's tasty specialties. Almost all of them also serve hot mulled wine, or Glühwein, in colorful collectible mugs unique to each market and typically made of ceramic, clay or glass. You get a refund on the deposit you pay for a mug if you return it to a vendor, or you can bring it home as a souvenir, which many people do. “I brought back every mug from every Glühwein I drank,” says Beard. “I love to use them at Christmas when friends come over. It brings back so many good memories.”

What to expect at markets in different countries …

Austria’s markets are often described as the most romantic. They're often located outside some of the country’s most historic buildings and stately palaces, such as Vienna’s imperial Schönbrunn Palace. The Salzburg market, located on Festungsberg mountain at the foot of the Hohensalzburg fortress, overlooks the city; and the Krems market takes place right in the center of town. Advent concerts featuring choirs and brass bands add to the markets’ ambience.

What to buy:  Blown glass and snow globes are especially prevalent. You’ll also find candles, pottery, wood carvings and other items made by local artisans.

Foods to try:  Krapfen, a yeast dough pastry filled with jam or sauerkraut.

Markets in Cologne and Nuremberg rank among the most popular ones on river-cruise routes in Germany. Cologne is known for its themed markets, including the “Market of Angels” and “Santa Claus Village.” “Heinzels Wintermärchen,” the city’s largest market, delights with an added feature: an ice-skating rink. Nuremberg hosts one of the country’s largest and most famous markets, set in the center of Old Town.

What to buy:  Hand-carved wooden nativity scenes and nussknackers (nutcrackers), and Zwetschgenmännles (figurines made from decorated dried plums).

Foods to try:  The bratwurst, of course, but also Lebkuchen gingerbread cakes, potato cakes and candied almonds. Do sample the Eierpunsch, an egg-based drink similar to eggnog made with wine and brandy or rum and served warm.

Many people consider Budapest, the only Hungarian city where the holiday cruises stop, home to Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets. The biggest, in Vörösmarty Square in the heart of the city, runs longer than many, starting in early November and ending on Jan. 1, rather than on Christmas Eve or a day or two before. Its free daily concerts featuring a wide range of music, including Hungarian folk music, are an added plus.

What to buy:  Beaded bracelets, embroidered ornaments and gloves, fragrant dried spices and sheepskin hats.

Foods to try:  Goulash, kolbasz (hot dogs), strudel and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef, ground pork and rice.

Rhine cruises, which generally sail between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland, feature stops at markets in the Alsace region of France, including the country’s oldest Christmas market, in Strasbourg, and smaller markets in villages such as Riquewihr.

What to buy:  Storks are a centuries-old symbol of Alsace, so the markets sell stork ornaments, stork figurines and table linens embroidered with storks. You’ll get a different experience along the Rhône in Provence. In this region, popular sellers are  santons,  clay figurines that people in the south of France collect for Nativity scenes in their homes. But they go beyond the usual Nativity figures to include figures of community members, from the butcher and the baker to children. Food is a focus, too. “The locals are there buying their foie gras, oysters and champagne,” Kyllo says. “It’s not staged for tourists.”

Foods to try:  Nut’Alsace, a hazelnut cocoa spread; bredles, small cakes or cookies often shaped like stars, Christmas trees and storks; and knack, a sausage traditionally flavored with black truffles and smoked with beechwood.

Many Danube sailings stop in Bratislava, the capitol of Slovakia, home to several markets, including one in the courtyard of the Old Town Hall and another one at Bratislava Castle, which overlooks the city.

What to buy:  Embroidered linens, handmade candles, hanging potpourri, Slovakian ceramics and handmade jewelry.

Foods to try:  Homemade lokshe (potato pancakes with various sweet and sour fillings), cabbage soup, traditional Bratislavské rožky pastries filled with poppy seeds or walnuts, and Trdelnik (chimney cake), raised dough cooked over fire and then rolled in cinnamon, coconut, chocolate or poppyseed.

Cruisers looking to celebrate the holidays with Disney's cast of characters in 2023 can book a Very Merrytime cruise as short as a four-day sailing from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Bahamas. For an extended getaway, consider Disney Cruise Line 's eastbound eastbound 15-day voyage that embarks in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico , and transits the Panama Canal, disembarking in Galveston, Texas .

On the first evening of every sailing, guests can gather around the three-deck-tall Christmas tree for the tree lighting ceremony, a holiday singalong and the introduction of Santa Claus. Other festivities include the fun-filled Mickey and Minnie's Holiday Party, themed Very Merrytime activities for children of all ages, carolers singing songs, and Christmas-inspired food and beverages. Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be sporting jolly new holiday attire during the special voyages.

Celebrate the holidays with a once-in-a-lifetime getaway to the sun-drenched islands of Tahiti . You'll set sail a few days before Christmas aboard the four-masted sailing yacht Wind Spirit. Windstar's 10-day Overwater Bungalow & Tahitian Paradise Cruise Tour also includes a three-night stay in overwater bungalows on the island of Moorea. The line's nine-day Caribbean voyage departs round-trip from San Juan, Puerto Rico , several days after Christmas. There are eight ports of call, including stops in the beautiful islands of Curaçao , Bonaire , St. Lucia and Aruba . For a special celebration, splurge on luxurious suite accommodations in The Haven. The ship-within-a-ship retreat features a private restaurant, a lounge, a sundeck, a concierge desk and 24-hour butler service.

Holiday-themed activities on Norwegian's ships vary by itinerary and ship. Still, guests will find plenty of festive fun on board, including traditional holiday fare and holiday-inspired musical sets, trivia, and family and youth programming. Guests are invited to offer interdenominational services for fellow passengers during the sailing. You'll also find Hanukkah services listed in the Freestyle Daily Program. Plan to sleep in on New Year's Day and spend a blissful day relaxing at sea after a late night celebrating New Year's Eve on board the ship.

American Queen Voyages

The holiday-themed, eight-day Roundtrip New Orleans voyage on American Queen begins with an overnight in the city and disembarks just in time to spend Christmas Eve in the Big Easy . The ship – a 417-passenger paddlewheeler that is the largest steamboat ever built – will call on four ports during the sailing on the Lower Mississippi River. In Natchez, Mississippi, guests will find holiday markets exclusively created for the voyage, where you can shop for gifts and sweet treats. You'll also be greeted with bonfires along the riverbanks at the historic Nottoway Resort in White Parish, Louisiana. Join in the real spirit of Christmas with donations to Giving Trees in the port towns that help local charities.

There are plenty of cheery activities on board the ship with Christmas shows, singalongs, caroling and cooking demonstrations. Guests can also put their creative talents to work decorating gingerbread houses, ornaments and cards while sampling holiday-themed cocktails or sipping hot chocolate. Specially prepared dishes will celebrate the traditions of Hanukkah, including traditional foods like homemade latkes (fried potato pancakes).

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

• Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
• The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
• Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .
