This is a story about the time I flew across the country to meet a bunch of internet strangers.

Travel hacking, points and miles, award travel…whatever you want to call it, it’s been a historically male-dominated game. I’ve been in this space since 2015, but it’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve seen more and more women focused on points and miles popping up.

Many of us knew of each other through Instagram, but only some of us had ever met in real life. Well, one conversation turned into an Instagram DM thread which quickly turned into a weekend in San Diego! You can move fast when everyone can book flights and hotels with points without worrying about the cost too much.

Women in Travel Hacking Meet Up in San Diego

Points and Miles Made It Happen

How does a group of travel hacking women choose a destination, you ask? By the hotel free night certificates burning a hole in their pockets along with an elite night credit promotion, of course!

A few of us had Hyatt category 1-4 free night certificates available and during the weekend we chose to travel, there was a promotion offering double elite night credits at Andaz locations. So, we ended up choosing Andaz San Diego since it satisfied both the free night certificate holders and those of us chasing elite status.

A Weekend in San Diego

I’ll admit I was a little nervous flying across the country to meet a bunch of women I only knew from Instagram, but I was equally excited.

My fear was squashed immediately as soon as I started meeting people. It’s a strange thing meeting your internet friends — you kind of feel like you know them even though you’ve never actually met.

travel hacking mom san diego

The weekend was filled with lots of points and miles talk, trip plans, and blogging advice. It was a very supportive and collaborative atmosphere. Everyone shared their expertise and ideas for future projects…some new collaboration ideas may have even been born.

It may sound super cheesy, but being around these women made me feel awesome — like I was part of a group of women that shared interests and cared about each other’s success.

It’s great when women can support other women. I love the saying “dimming someone else’s light doesn’t make yours any brighter”. It’s true that the more we share and support each other the more successful we all become!

Here’s a list of everyone in attendance at our ‘Women In Travel Hacking” meet-up. I hope you’ll find these women on Instagram or through their websites. See who resonates with you and give them a follow and share their posts. It’s a great and free way to support women business owners.

Final Thoughts

Little did I think when I started this blog back in 2016 that it would lead to so many incredible things. In addition to launching me down an entirely new and exciting career path, I have met some great friends along the way.

The travel hacking community has long been dominated by a bunch of bros. While most of these men are very helpful and supportive and I’ve got nothing against them, there’s something special about finding a community of women who have the same obsession interests.

Mistakes I Made In 2023

travel hacking mom san diego

I am not perfect, far from it! My family will attest. 🙂

Maybe you are hesitant to start playing the game because there is so much to know and so much to keep track of. You are right; there is!

But even if you aren’t perfect, even if you make mistakes during the year, miss opportunities, or leave money on the table, you will still be doing better than before. And I promise you will get better as you go.

I still make mistakes, and I kept track of them in 2023 so I could share them with you. 🙂 Here are the ones that I remember…

1.  I paid to check a bag on Delta on 12/31, trying to use up my 2023 $200 Amex incidental credit, the charge didn’t post till 1/1/24, i didn’t get the credit.

2. I let Rob’s Delta Companion Pass expire. I posted about this one.

3. I accidentally ordered Rob an additional Citi AAdvantage Executive card for $175 even though he got his own card too. (We got 100k bonuses). I didn’t realize it till I was billed for the $175.

4. I got Rob and I BOA Alaska Airlines cards with 70K bonuses each. I spent the $3k for the bonus on his card, but for some reason, I forgot that it was $3k and (thought it was $1k) when i started spending on my card. When months went by without me getting the bonus, I finally called. And they told me that I didn’t reach the minimum spend. They wouldn’t budge! Ugh, this one really hurt.

5. I bought something at Saks late last year and waited and waited and waited for my $50 credit, only to realize I used it earlier in the year.

6. I had two rooms at the Park Hyatt Bangkok this past December, but I forgot to make the other one a Guest of Honor reservation whereby that room would have also gotten free breakfast with my Globalist status. Instead we just had 2 free breakfasts for the 5 of us. Grrr.

7. I took advantage of an Amex offer with my Platinum card that was supposed to be $ off for a Hilton stay. I used my Platinum to pay for my stay this past fall in San Diego. The credit never came. When i finally reached out to Amex, they directed me to the terms in which the offer was only for certain Hilton brands, not mine! What a waste of a hotel charge, on my Platinum!

8. I never used a $50 travel credit on United. It expired.

69. Maximizing Travel with Co-Branded Cards: Our Complete Guide

In this latest episode, we're taking a deep dive into the often overlooked yet incredibly rewarding world of co-branded airline and hotel credit cards. Imagine jet-setting in business class to the Maldives or unwinding at a luxury resort in Bora Bora—yes, we've done that, and much, much more, all thanks to these specialty cards. We, the Travel Mom Squad (Pam, Jess, and Alex), are here to share the ins and outs of co-branded cards, from the perks that make them invaluable to our personal favorite redemptions.

While we often sing the praises of flexible points from cards like Chase and Capital One, co-branded cards hold a special place in our wallets and our hearts. Why, you ask? For starters, they're the gateway to brand loyalty benefits, such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and that all-important annual free night certificate.

Pam kicks things off with her love for the United card, thanks to her proximity to Denver's hub, illustrating the practical benefits of brand loyalty. Jess dives into the strategy behind selecting the right hotel card, emphasizing the importance of a planned redemption. Alex shares her approach to keeping a balanced portfolio of airline points to capitalize on award sales.

As we dissect the benefits, strategy, and unforgettable trips enabled by our co-branded cards, you'll see why these often underrated tools are indispensable in our points and miles game. Whether you're drawn to airline perks, hotel luxury, or simply more travel for less, co-branded cards might just be the missing piece in your points and miles puzzle.

Ready to turn your travel dreams into reality, from the Maldives to Disneyland and beyond, without breaking the bank? Hit play to listen to the full episode and join us, the Travel Mom Squad, on this points-fueled adventure. Quit work and travel: A how-to guide

Woman photographing scenic cliffside town

Want to quit work and travel for years at a time? It is possible. Just ask Marco Ilagan and Francina Cassaniti. They quit work five years ago. They’ve been traveling the world ever since. And they have no plans, nor economic reasons, to ever return to a 9-to-5 lifestyle.

“I wanted to see the world — experience all that the world has to offer,” says Ilagan. “I have never been healthier and feel like I’m becoming the best version of myself.”

Added Cassaniti: “We are more active. We are meditating. We are connecting more with nature. And we are learning so much through traveling.”

Quit work and travel

There are just two things you need to do to make it work:

Cut expenses

  • And find a few smart side hustles — those that have few constraints on where and when you do them — to pay the bills that remain.

While cutting costs dramatically seems difficult, it’s actually pretty simple. Ilagan and Cassaniti do two things to eliminate most of their big expenses: They housesit and travel-hack.

Travel hacking mainly involves using their stellar credit ratings to get credit card airline miles. Ilagan spends a few hours every month or two checking out what credit card companies offer the best bonuses for signing up. They get the cards; follow the rules; then use those bonuses to buy free airline tickets to the next place they want to visit.

But the biggest savings came from signing up with a housesitting site. For the cost of one night’s lodging, they bought a year membership with TrustedHousesitters . This site is one of a half-dozen international housesitting operations that allow travelers and homeowners to swap services. Homeowners get free pet-sitting and plant watering from travelers, who get free accommodations in exchange.

When SideHusl.com editors caught up with Ilagan and Cassaniti, they were housesitting in Costa Rica. Video-conferencing in front of a picture window, our editors could see monkeys swinging through the trees behind them.

“One month of my life in Chicago cost the same as traveling the world for an entire year,” says Ilagan.

International housesitting

However, there are a few things you need to know about international housesitting. First, it’s important to stress that this is not a “job.” If you want a job overseas, you generally need to get a work visa.

And getting a work visa is both time-consuming and uncertain. That’s because countries don’t want foreigners to take jobs from permanent residents.

TrustedHousesitters devotes an entire section of its website to explaining how housesitting differs from paid work. And, it even offers form letters to present to border control agents, when there’s a problem. But it’s best if you simply skirt the issue completely.

This is easiest to do when you plan ahead, booking not only your current sit but the one after that, too. Ilagan says planning months in advance also gives them the ability to book cheaper transportation.

Going through customs

Every country asks tourists to answer a few questions on arrival. One is whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure. And another is where you’re staying while in the country and for how long. Finally, customs agents want to know where you’re going when you leave.

You should be sure to say that you’re tourists. Also have the names and address of the people you’re housesitting for, and a plan for where you’ll go next, when, and how. If you have a return ticket, great. But, if you’re going on, you can also explain that you’ll be leaving the country via car, boat or train.

This should satisfy customs officials. The fact that you’re watching someone’s pets may never come up.

Housesitting full-time

While there are many housesitting sites that you can sign up for , when you want to housesit full-time, TrustedHousesitters is the best choice. There are several reasons why.

One is that the site is far larger than its nearest competitor, which means there are more houses available in more countries. In addition, where most housesitting sites simply charge a flat rate to join, Trusted offers premium plans that provide valuable services to people who travel and housesit frequently.

For instance, the site’s standard housesitter plan costs $129 annually and provides a background check and unlimited access to housesits for a year. However, for $259, the site offers a premium plan that offers airport lounge passes; online and video chats with vets; and liability insurance. This plan also includes “sit cancellation insurance” which pays you up to $1,500 if a homeowner cancel a housesit at the last minute and leaves you homeless.

Since homeowners do sometimes cancel plans at the last minute, sit cancellation coverage allows full-time housesitters the time to regroup and find a Plan B.

Side hustles

The bulk of Ilagan and Cassaniti’s remaining monthly expenses are for food and clothing. Because they have spent a good portion of their time traveling in inexpensive locations, such as Thailand and South America, they can eat and dress well on a relative pittance — about $500 a month.

But, they still need to make some money. So they looked for side hustles that they could do from anywhere at anytime of the day or night.

The couple engages in several side hustles, including selling photos and videos. Selling photos seemed like a natural fit, considering that they’re traveling and snapping pictures all the time.

Sites like Alamy , Adobe Stock , and Getty Images invite freelance photographers and videographers to upload images for stock photo buyers. When an image sells, the photographer earns a royalty. Similarly, print-on-demand sites such as FineArtAmerica and Society6 can use photographs to decorate products ranging from iPhone cases to prints. They, too, pay royalties to the photographer for each sale.

The couple also launched a website called MapTheUnknown , which they hope to monetize with advertisements, affiliate marketing arrangements and by using it to sell their life coaching services.

Other nomadic hustles

However, there are dozens of side hustles that are ideal for people who want to quit work and travel. These include writing and editing ; tutoring ; transcription ; website testing ; consulting ; and translation .

All of these jobs allow you to set your own schedule and conduct your work from anywhere that you have an internet connection and a laptop.
