Most Commonly Asked Questions About Travelling to Johor from Singapore

travel singapore to johor bahru

“Is the Causeway or Second Link better?” , “What is the best way to enter JB?” , “What else is there to do besides City Square and KSL?”

JB Sentral - Visiting Johor from Singapore

These were some questions that slid into my DMs when news of the land border between Singapore and Malaysia opened up. Loved the attention but was honestly none the wiser to give any sound advice considering a couple of years have passed since I last crossed the border too.

Friends looking at scenery at Skyscape - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Hence, I rounded up some of the most commonly asked questions about travelling to Johor from Singapore, in an attempt to answer them.

travel singapore to johor bahru

And to do that, I needed to go to Johor. So I gathered a few colleagues for a day trip to the +60 to get the answers everyone wanted to know. For this article, I’ll be focusing on travelling to JB via public transport, but drivers can pick up on a few tips too!

1) Is Woodlands Causeway or Tuas Second Link better?

Map of JB from Singapore - Visiting Johor from Singapore

There are two land border crossings between Singapore and Johor — The Woodlands Causeway and the Tuas Second Link.

Restoran Hua Mui in JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Choosing which land border is as easy as knowing where your intended areas of visit in Johor are. The Woodlands Causeway leads to the JB Sentral that’s connected to JB City Square , Komtar JBCC , and walking distance to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a haven for food lovers.

If you’re visiting Legoland , the Johor Premium Outlet , and around the areas of Bukit Indah, cross via the Tuas Second Link instead.

For us, we crossed the Woodlands Causeway for our day trip outing to JB as we wanted to check out the Johor SkyScape , Mount Austin, and Spring Labs districts.

2) How to enter Johor via Public Transport from Singapore?

Opposite kranji mrt bus stop - Visiting Johor from Singapore

If you’re entering JB via public transport, you have three options — Public buses, Grab buses or the KTM train.

Entering Johor by Bus:

Below are the public buses that run from Singapore to Johor. Passengers can simply tap their EZ-link cards to pay the bus fare of ~S$1.30. The bus fare for CW1 is S$2.60.

Do note that, however, SJE buses only accept cash payments.

We took bus 170 from the Opp. Kranji MRT bus stop and the journey to Woodlands Checkpoint was around 30 minutes long as traffic was heavy. It should take around 15 minutes on a good day.

Bus passengers will have to alight at Woodlands Checkpoint to clear immigration, and reboard the bus to enter Johor.

Entering Johor by Grab Bus:

Alternatively, you can also book a bus on Grab to travel directly to Johor Bahru (JB) CIQ Checkpoint.

Grab Bus App - JB FAQ

Simply head to Grab app and click on the “More” option. Then select the “Travel” category and click on the “Bus & Ferry” option. After you’ve entered your destination, you can choose from a list of pick-up points in Singapore like Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Marsiling MRT and more!

Grab Bus App Slots - JB FAQ

Fares vary from S$3 to S$11 per person depending on how far your pick-up point is from the destination. Also, remember that you’ll still need to alight and clear immigration at Woodlands Checkpoint first before reboarding the bus to enter Johor.

*Pro-tip: Book your tickets early as there are limited seats for various time slots too!

Entering Johor by Train:

Riders on KTM train from Singapore to Johor - Visiting Johor from Singapore

KTM train tickets can be purchased on-site at the KTM counter at both Woodlands CIQ and JB Sentral, or on the KTM website . The ticket costs S$5 from SG to JB and RM5 from JB to SG .

*Pro-tip: Save RM5 by purchasing to and fro tickets separately on the KTM website (RM16 + RM5 instead of RM32 for “return” tickets)

3) Should I take a bus or train to Johor from Singapore?

Kranji bus stop to take public bus into JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

We’d really recommend taking the train simply because the whole process is a lot more seamless but here are some pros and cons to consider:

Pros of taking a public bus into JB: – Relatively cheaper at only ~S$3 roundtrip instead of RM16 (~S$5) by train – Many buses to take so waiting time is cut down – Buses operate till late

Cons of taking a bus into JB: – Can get very crowded – Journey duration depends on traffic conditions – Having to get off at Woodlands Checkpoint for immigration clearance

Commuters on KTM train from Singapore to Johor - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Pros of taking the KTM train: – No traffic congestion – Trains are air-conditioned – Journey is only 5-mins long – You clear both SG and MY immigration at Woodlands CIQ before boarding the train

Cons of taking KTM train: – Tickets sell out early (we recommend purchasing at least a week in advance) – Woodlands CIQ is not located next to an MRT station, so you’ll need to either take a bus from Marsiling MRT station or walk 1.5km – Costs more than taking a bus

3) How to use the e-gates at JB customs?

MDAC Card - JB Custom E-gate

Honestly, it’s about time! To speed up the immigration process, Singaporeans can now finally use the e-gates when crossing the Causeway. Just ensure that your passport has at least 3 months of validity and submit a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days before entering the country.

If it’s your first time, you’d still have to head to the manual immigration counter and inform the officer that you wish to use the e-gate. After registering your information in the system, you’ll be able to use the e-gate on subsequent trips to Malaysia!

4) How can I get around Johor if I’m not driving in?

Tourists walking down streets of JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

If your agenda is only JB City Square Mall and the surrounding streets, walking is a great and efficient way to get around. However, for further distances such as KSL City Mall, Mount Austin and Spring Labs, your best travel buddy will be Grab — you can use your existing Singapore account!

Short distances such as one from JB City Square Mall to KSL City Mall cost around RM5 – 10 (~S$1.50 – 3), while longer distances from JB Sental to Austin Heights cost around RM30 (~S$10).

5) What else besides JB City Square and KSL City Mall?

6) Are cashless options widely available in Johor for travellers from Singapore?

Monday Night Market in JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Yes, cashless options are available at shopping malls, cafes and most restaurants, but cash is still king for roadside stalls and street food.

Food stall at the Monday Night Market JB - Visiting Johor from Singapore

Apart from bringing cash, we’d recommend using multi-currency travel cards such as YouTrip or Revolut to save on currency conversion fees charged by credit card companies.

Based on our experience, Grab rides are also slightly more expensive if you pay via the app itself due to the conversion rate. The difference, however, is negligible at a few cents per ride.

7) Do I need to prove my vaccination status?

Nope, we weren’t asked for it during immigration or when entering malls in Johor!

If you are planning to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB) but you hate the traffic jam along the causeway, you should consider taking the train to JB! The train journey is only 5 minutes long and the ticket price is really affordable.

In case you need an introduction, KTM stands for Keretapi Tanah Melayu, which can be translated to Malayan Railways. There are many types of KTM Train (such as KTM Intercity, ETS, Komuter, etc), but the train that serves Singapore <-> Johor Bahru route is called KTM Shuttle Tebrau .

In this article, I will share the full detailed guide on how to take train from Singapore to JB, as well as from JB to Singapore.

Have any questions about traveling in Singapore? Join All About Singapore Travel FB group, I'll be there to answer your questions!

Train Ticket Prices

If you purchase the tickets separately, the train ticket from Singapore to Johor Bahru costs SGD5 and the ticket from Johor Bahru to Singapore costs RM5.

However, if you purchase a return ticket, the price will follow the first leg of the ticket. For example:

  • If you purchase a return ticket of SG-JB and JB-SG, the total cost is 2xSGD5 = SGD10
  • If you purchase a return ticket of JB-SG and SG-JB, the total cost is 2xRM5 = RM10

Booking the train ticket online

The first step you need to do is to purchase the train ticket. You can purchase it from the counter located at Level 1 of Woodlands Train Checkpoint Building or you can book it online. I highly recommend that you book online because the train ticket gets sold out very early, especially the evening tickets and weekend tickets.

Registering for an account

If this is your first time making an online booking for KTM train, you need to register a new account. Go to KTM Shuttle Tebrau website , and click “Login/Signup” link located at the top right corner of the screen. Then, fill up your particulars.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (1) - Register New Account

After that, you will receive an email from KTM with a link to activate your account.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (2) - Activate New Account

After activation, you can now login to your account on KTM website.

Purchasing train ticket online

Go to KTM Shuttle Tebrau website and login to your account. Once logged in, you are redirected to ETS/Intercity booking platform, which is NOT what we want. You need to click on “Shuttle Tebrau” link at the top menu.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (3) - Booking Platform

Now, you can choose your route, date and number of passengers.

By the way, children below 4 years old can travel for free, but you need to register at ticket counter before departure. Upon registration, you will receive a physical ticket for your child. Ticket counter at Singapore is located at Level 1 of the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building. Meanwhile, ticket counter at Johor Bahru is located at JB Sentral building Level 2, which is right in front of the train departure/arrival gate.

Pro-Tips : 1. If you start your journey from Singapore and you want to purchase two-way ticket (Woodlands -> JB and JB -> Woodlands), don’t purchase them together because you will be charged S$5 for each way (total S$10 for 2-way tickets). Instead, purchase both tickets separately and you will only pay S$5 for SG-MY and RM5 for MY-SG route. 2. If you start your journey from Johor Bahru and you want to purchase 2-way ticket (JB -> Woodlands and Woodlands -> JB), do purchase them together because you will be charged RM5 for each way (total RM10 for 2-way tickets). If you purchase separately, you will be charged RM5+S$5.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (5) - Booking Train Ticket

After selecting your route, you will need to key in your particulars in the next page. Make sure your passport number is correct because you will check-in with your passport and not your ticket.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (6) - Booking Train Ticket

Next, you will be prompted to make payment. The acceptable payment methods are: KTM Wallet, Credit Card (Visa/Mastercard), Debit Card / ATM, Touch ‘N Go e-wallet, and Boost.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau (7) - Paying for Train Ticket

Lastly, you will be directed to a ticket confirmation page. You will also receive an email of you ticket, but it takes some time for the ticket to arrive at your inbox, please be patient and don’t panic (mine took 5 mins).

PART 1: SINGAPORE TO JOHOR BAHRU

Make your way to woodlands train checkpoint.

On the day of your departure, make your way to Woodlands Train Checkpoint building. Do arrive at the building at least 30 mins before departure because boarding starts 40 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 20 mins before departure.

Here are the ways to get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint:

By taxi or ride-hailing : Simply tell the driver or key in your ride-hailing app “Woodlands Train Checkpoint”. You will arrive right in front of the Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

On foot : From Marsiling MRT, walk 1.5km along Woodlands Centre Road. Here’s the route .

  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 856  (Berth 11) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. In my opinion, this is the best bus to take.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 903  (Berth 4) and alight 10 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 911 or 911T  (Berth 12) and alight 6 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From Woodlands Bus Interchange, take  Bus 912 or 912B  (Berth 12) and alight 11 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint. Not recommended.
  • From opposite Kranji MRT Station, take Bus 178 and alight 5 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.
  • From opposite Marsiling MRT Station, take Bus 856 and alight 3 stops later at W’lands Train Checkpoint.

Bus to Woodlands Train Checkpoint (1) - Bus 856 at Berth 11

Go through both immigrations at Woodlands Train Checkpoint

Enter Woodlands Train Checkpoint building and go up to Level 2. You will soon see signs for train boarding. Join the queue for boarding and prepare your passport. Your passport will serve as your boarding pass. Based on my experience, there is no need to print out your ticket because it isn’t checked for boarding.

After entering the departure gate, you will be required to clear Singapore immigration, followed by Malaysia immigration. Both countries’ immigration are located at Singapore side. You must clear both immigration before boarding the train.

Photography and videography are not allowed inside Woodlands Train Checkpoint building, hence I’m unable to show you any photos.

Take the train from Singapore to Johor Bahru

After clearing both immigration, you can now enter the train platform and board the train!

Woodlands Train Checkpoint (6) - Train

Seating : It is free seating, so you can sit at any available empty seat. In each carriage, half of the seats are facing one direction, while the other half are facing the opposite direction.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

If you’re prone to motion sickness, you should choose the seat that’s facing the same direction as the direction the train is moving to. How to check the direction of the train? Well, simply use the compass in Google Maps. If you happen to board a crowded train and there aren’t many available seats left, don’t sweat it. The train journey is just 5-min long, it’s not long enough to induce severe motion sickness.

Luggage storage : Luggage and bags can be stored at the overhead compartment.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

If you’re lucky to score the front-row seat, you’ll get extra legroom which can be useful for tall people, or people with many bags and luggage.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Toilets : There are toilets in the carriage (1 squat and 1 sit-down), but personally I would not use them because… erm, let’s just say that they’re not as clean as toilets in Singapore or Malaysia shopping malls.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Sights along the wa y: There are 2 types of sight you can expect from this train ride. When facing Johor Bahru from Singapore, the seats on the left side will have the view of train platforms and the causeway (i.e. the road connecting Singapore and Malaysia). Meanwhile, the seats on the right side will have the view of water pipes and the Straits of Johor.

KTM Shuttle Tebrau

Arriving at JB Sentral

Once the train arrives at Johor Bahru, take the escalator or staircase up. Follow the “Exit” direction and you will soon arrive at JB Sentral building. From here, you can simply walk to City Square or take taxi/bus to other parts of Johor Bahru.

JB Sentral (1) - KTM Train Platform

PART 2: TRAIN FROM JOHOR BAHRU TO SINGAPORE

Make your way to jb sentral.

On the day of your departure, make your way to JB Sentral building. Do arrive at the building at least 20 mins before departure because boarding starts 30 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 10 mins before departure.

JB Sentral (5) - JB Sentral Building

Here are the ways to get to JB Sentral:

By taxi or ride-hailing : Simply tell the driver or key in your ride-hailing app “JB Sentral”. You will arrive at Level 1 of JB Sentral. Go up to Level 2 and walk to the departure gate.

On foot : JB Sentral is within walking distance from City Square shopping mall, JBCC Komtar, R&F Marina Place, Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Centre, Amari Johor Bahru, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and JB CIQ.

  • From Larkin Sentral (Bus Terminal): Take Bus 227 or P101.

Go through Malaysia immigration at JB Sentral

When you arrive at JB Sentral building, make your way to Level 2 and walk towards to departure gate located at the north side of the building (i.e. near the exit towards CIQ and City Square).

JB Sentral (7) - Going to JB Sentral Building

There are 2 gates: Gate A and Gate B. There is a monitor that indicates which gate the train is departing from. Usually the train departs from Gate A.

JB Sentral (8) - Inside JB Sentral - Entering Gate

About 30 mins before departure, passengers will be allowed to enter the departure gate. You will need to scan your passport at the gantry.

JB Sentral (10) - Scan Passport to go to Departure Gate

Then, you will arrive at the immigration section of Malaysia’s side. After clearing the immigration, you will need to join a queue for train boarding.

JB Sentral (11) - After Malaysia Immigration

Based on my experience, they only allow people to board exactly at the time the train is supposed to depart. For example, if your ticket is for 5pm departure, they only allow people to board the train at 5pm. Hence, you can expect about 10 to 15 mins delay from the scheduled departure. This only happens in Johor Bahru and not Singapore (in Singapore, you can board the train as soon as you clear the immigration).

It’s quite frustrating if you are carrying heavy/bulky items. Furthermore, the space after immigration is quite small, it gets really packed and stuffy during peak period when the train is at full capacity. I really hope the Malaysian operator can look into this matter and allow passengers to board early.

Unlike SG-JB route where you clear both countries’ immigration before boarding the train, in this JB-SG route you clear only Malaysia’s immigration before you board. Then you will clear SG immigration when arriving at SG.

Take the train from Johor Bahru to Singapore

After the boarding starts, make your way to the train platform by going down the escalator or staircase. It is free seating, so you can take any available empty seats.

JB Sentral (12) - Train Platform

The train’s interior is exactly the same as the train in the SG-JB route, you can scroll up to “Take the train from Singapore to Johor Bahru” section to read my review of the train.

Go through Singapore immigration at Woodlands Train Checkpoint

After arriving at Singapore, you will enter the Singapore immigration area. If you’re a Singapore citizen or resident, you can choose to go through the Automated Clearance or Manual Counter. If you’re a foreigner, you have to go through the Manual Counter.

After clearing the immigration and baggage check, you will find yourself at Level 2 of Woodlands Train Checkpoint Building. To get out, simply walk the staircase or take the elevator down to Level 1.

Getting to other parts of Singapore

To get to other parts of Singapore from Woodlands Train Checkpoint, here are the transportation options:

By taxi : There is a taxi stand right in front of Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

By ride hailing : Alternatively, you can book ride-hailing. The pick-up point is in front of Woodlands Train Checkpoint building.

  • To go to Kranji MRT: take Bus 170
  • To go to Marsiling MRT: take Bus 950
  • To go to Woodlands Bus Interchange/MRT: take bus 178, 903, 911, 912

Woodlands Train Checkpoint (8) - Bus stop

Taking KTM Train to Johor Bahru from Singapore is much fuss-free compared to taking bus. You don’t have to worry about being stuck traffic jam, or being stuck for hours in an extremely crowded immigration hall. You’ll also be able to store your luggage and bag in the overhead compartment (most cross-border buses don’t have luggage storage area).

But there are cons as well. Firstly, if you plan to travel during peak period (eg: SG->JB Fri evening, SG->JB Sat morning, JB->SG Sun evening, JB>SG Mon morning), it’s extremely difficult to get a ticket because they’re sold out months in advance, so it’s only possible to take train during off-peak period. Secondly, you still need to spend a considerable amount of time clearing immigration, so you still need to spend at least 1 hour to cross the border.

If you want to learn how to take bus to cross the border, here’s my guide on how to travel from Singapore to Johor Bahru by bus .

Hi Eva, I just read this comprehensive article (and the one where you explained how to cross borders by bus), found them super helpful in navigating my trip for next week. I rarely leave a comment but I feel compelled to do so after reading this article. I appreciate it a lot! Cheers

Monday 9th of October 2023

Hi Kevin, thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! Hope you have a great trip!

Monday 28th of August 2023

Hi Eva, I found your blog very useful, thanks for that. I am planning to go to JB from SG on 4th 11am by train (I've bought a ticket online), and wondering how early should I reach Woodlands Checkpoint since I should not be late unlike bus which you can board anytime? Do they have dedicated immigration queue for those taking train? Appreciate if you could shed some light! Thanks :)

Hi Yandi. Do arrive at the building at least 30 mins before departure because boarding starts 40 mins before departure, and the gate will be closed 20 mins before departure.

Can I bring a bicycle into the train ? Tqs

Hi Walter, sorry I have no idea

Thursday 15th of December 2022

Can I take the next train if we miss the one stated on the ticket?

I don't think so? You probably need to go to information counter to purchase the ticket for the next train.

Thursday 24th of November 2022

Nice guide. Possible to buy SG -> JB at discounted rate of RM5+RM5? AKA: Buying return tickets JB -> SG & SG -> JB, but not turning up/ refunding the JB -> SG portion? Might get blacklisted or illegal to buy tickets without intent to travel?

I have never tried that, so I'm not sure what will happen if you do that. If you're forfeiting the JB->SG portion, technically it should be ok, because you can say that you changed your travel plan for certain reasons and can't travel from JB-SG on that day. But, if you're requesting a refund, there's a risk that they will void the entire ticket.

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, how to go to johor bahru by bus from singapore.

Johor Bahru is the closest Malaysian city to Singapore. In fact, Johor Bahru is only separated by a 2.7km bridge over the Johor Straits from the Woodlands Checkpoint in the north of Singapore.

Johor Bahru as seen from Johor Strait

Due to its proximity, Johor Bahru (also lovingly known as JB in Singapore) became a popular destination for Singapore residents to spend a quick weekend in. It is also a crossing point for those of us who are looking for short getaways from Singapore .

Crossing over to Johor Bahru is easy. I’ll cover what you need to know in this post!

Tips for Crossing over to Johor Bahru

Here are a couple of pointers that will make your journey to JB smoother:

Bring your passport with a minimum of 6 months validity – Yes, even though it’s such a short trip that doesn’t feel like an international journey, you’re still crossing over to a different country – so you need your passport. Additionally, make sure you have at least 6 months’ validity on your passport!

Check if you need a Malaysia visa  – If you hold a China or India passport, you need to get a visa to enter Malaysia. You can check  Malaysia visa requirements here .

Fill in Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) – Unless you’re holding a Singapore passport or Malaysian Long Term Residence, you will need to fill in MDAC starting January 1, 2024. You can fill out MDAC here within 3 days of your planned departure to Malaysia.

Queue at Johor Bahru Checkpoint – While exiting Singapore as a resident should be easy enough, you might encounter a long queue at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint. If that’s the case, check counters 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, or 15-16 for a potentially faster queue. These counters are usually manned by two officers and might move faster. But before joining the line, make sure both officers are present!

Johor Checkpoint

Avoid peak times and holidays – Crossing the border is easy, but when it’s holiday time, it could take up to 4 hours to clear the immigration on both sides. I will elaborate below on the best time to go to Johor Bahru.

Using E-Gate at Johor Baru Checkpoint – If you hold a Singapore passport, good news! You can use the automated E-Gate to enter Malaysia. However, on the first visit, you still need to go to the manual counter to get your passport verified. On the subsequent visits after that, you can use the E-Gate.

Bring cash and your physical credit card – In most shops and restaurant you’ll be able to pay with credit card, but payment using Apple Wallet may not go through. I had this happen in one of the shops I was buying things from, but I was still able to use my credit card and wave it on the machine.

With a high volume of economic and tourism activities happening between Singapore and Malaysia, the land crossing between Singapore and Malaysia at Johor Bahru is undoubtedly one of the busiest border crossings in the world.

Many Malaysian residents live in Johor Bahru and work in Singapore. Because of this, on weekdays, most traffic will be coming from Johor Bahru to Singapore in the morning, and vice versa in the afternoon when people are off work. I have seen the terrible traffic from 3 PM from Singapore to JB.

On weekends, it’s the opposite – most traffic will be Singapore residents who want to do a short weekend trip in JB or other parts of Malaysia. The busiest time on the weekend will be going from Singapore to Johor Bahru after 8 AM on Saturday and coming back on Sunday around 4 PM.

So, the best time to cross from Singapore to Johor Bahru is on weekdays , from Monday to Friday in the morning by 10 AM , and coming back to Singapore in the afternoon by 4 PM . Otherwise, you might face long queues at the checkpoints. On Weekends (Sat and Sun) or Public Holidays, I would go from Singapore to JB as early as possible in the morning – as early as 6 – 8 AM. And if you’re coming back to Singapore on Sunday, I’d try to cross the border by 2 PM.

How to get to Johor Bahru from Singapore

Getting to Johor Bahru from Singapore is a well-oiled machine. It’s no wonder many Singaporeans love visiting JB on weekends! Here are a few easy ways to get to JB:

1. Causeway Link Bus (My preferred way)

The fastest way to travel to JB by bus is using the Causeway Link Bus, which gives you direct access from various points in Singapore to the Johor Checkpoint, without stopping anywhere else.

Causeway Link Bus at Queen Street Terminal

If you happen to live near one of the routes, I highly recommend Causeway Link because it is the easiest way. Here are a few locations where you can board the Causeway Link Bus in Singapore:

  • CW1 from Kranji MRT
  • CW2 from Queen Street Terminal near Jalan Besar MRT. CW2 is the only one that operates 24 hours. There is always a bus leaving every few minutes during the day, and every 45 minutes after midnight.
  • CW3 and CW4 from Jurong East Bus Interchange
  • CW5 from Newton Circus Carpark near Newton MRT Exit B
  • CW6 from Boon Lay MRT

Causeway Link Routes and Schedule: View routes and schedule here . You can also click on any of the bus routes to see when the next bus will be arriving!

Causeway Link Bus costs $2.60 – 6.00 one way depending on which route you take. You can use Visa Paywave to pay the bus fare. Please note, unlike the Singapore public bus, you only need to tap your card once when boarding the Causeway Link Bus. You do not need to tap your card again when alighting. This is because they charge a flat rate instead of a distance-based rate.

Once you cross Woodlands Checkpoint, you can take any Causeway Link bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint for $1.80. If you’re going to Larkin Sentral (to catch another bus to other parts of Malaysia) then you can use your Causewaylink ticket to board CWL.

2. Singapore Public Transportation

Yes, it’s possible to cross the border with public transportation too! The public transportation is slightly cheaper than the Causeway Link Bus, but not by much – it is capped at $2.37 per journey.

There are many ways to get to Woodlands Checkpoint by public transportation, but the easiest way would be the following direct services:

  • Take the MRT to Kranji MRT station , then resume the journey with Bus 170X
  • Take the MRT to Woodlands MRT station , then transfer to Bus 950

There might be queues for these buses as they are quite popular, but they’ll come by frequently.

Once you get through the Woodlands Checkpoint, you can board any public bus to resume your journey to Johor Checkpoint.

3. Private Car Transfer

If you are traveling as a big family or carrying a lot of luggage, you might want to get a private car instead. I did not see anyone carrying luggage when I was traveling by bus.

It is not the cheapest, but it is the most comfortable way – They will pick you up where you live and you don’t need to get out of the car to cross the border. All the immigration checks will be done while you are still sitting in your car!

Book a Private Car: I had a good experience with SG JB Taxi on my trip to Desaru . Alternatively, if you want to try taking the bus to JB but need a car back, you can book a private transfer from JB to Singapore via Klook on your way back!

How to get around in Johor Bahru

The easiest way to get around in Johor Bahru is by Grab. From Johor Bahru Checkpoint, you can get picked up from JB Sentral at the CIQ Jalan Jim Quee pick-up point.

CIQ Jalan Jim Quee Pick up Point

In my experience of going to JB on a weekday, I did not have any issue getting a Grab car. I was always able to get a car within 10 minutes of booking and the fares are very cheap relative to Singapore. I paid RM 26 for a 12 km journey.

How to cross the border to Johor Bahru from Singapore (and back!)

On my recent visit to JB, I went on a Thursday morning. I chose to go to Queen Street Terminal and take CW2 since it is the closest to where I live.

Taking the CW2 was easy. You only need to line up near the bus (if there is a line) and board the bus using your preferred method of payment. In my case, I used Visa Paywave via Apple Wallet on my phone. Note that Visa Paywave will be charged in MYR since Causeway Link is a Malaysian bus!

Inside the CW2 Bus

We boarded the CW2 bus at 9:47 AM, and it left shortly after to Woodlands Checkpoint. We arrived at Woodlands Checkpoint by 10:19 AM. Very fast.

Arriving at Woodlands Checkpoint

Clearing the Singapore immigration was easy for us as Singapore residents. We just went through the automated gate on the far right. By 10:26 AM, I was back in the bus area queueing for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Bahru Checkpoint.

Queue for the Causeway Link Bus to Johor Checkpoint

We arrived at the Johor Bahru Checkpoint at 10:48 AM. There was a long queue, but it moved fast and we cleared immigration using a manual counter by 11:09 AM.

Johor Checkpoint

After that, we simply followed the signs to JB Sentral, where I’ve asked my Grab car to pick us up. And off we went to our adventure in JB!

Crossing over to JB Sentral

On the way back to Singapore later in the afternoon of the same day, we did the same thing but in reverse. The Causeway Link Buses were already waiting for us so there was almost no wait.

Boarding Causeway Link Bus to Woodlands Checkpoint

The whole thing was so easy that I wondered why I did not do this more often.

And that’s my experience crossing the Singapore – Malaysia border and back! I hope this post is useful to you. As always, please feel free to leave comments below.

Until next time!

Johor Bahru to Singapore

travel singapore to johor bahru

Fondly referred to as just JB, the city of Johor Bahru lies right at the southern end of the Malaysian Peninsula. Many will tell you there’s really nothing here for the tourist as JB is more of a transportation and manufacturing hub than anything else, but, if you’re traveling around Malaysia and want to visit Singapore, the chances are, you’ll be starting from JB. You may also prefer to fly out of Singapore’s airport if you’re getting toward the end of your vacation, as there are better connections from here, rather than traveling a long way back into Malaysia. Of course, you could just be visiting Singapore because it’s a cool place to visit! It’s a city of contrasts, where British colonial mixes with the most modern skyscrapers and shopping centers yet there are still wide open spaces with parks, gardens, a zoo and plenty of places to walk.

Options for Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore

Options for Travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore

Johor Bahru and Singapore are separated by only a short stretch of water, named the Straits of Johor, so in effect, getting from one to the other is very quick and easy. In reality, it’s not quite so quick and easy though, as you have to remember that you’re crossing an international border so you’re going to run into all the complications associated with that. When you look at the entire distance from Johor Bahru to Singapore proper – meaning, right into the heart of Singapore – the travel distance is still only about 23 kilometers (14 miles), so distance-wise it’s not a lot. Aside from taking a taxi (which would have to be a specially licensed one by the way), the two most popular ways to travel from Johor Bahru to Singapore are by train and by bus, and we’ll give you all the facts on both of these options.

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Bus

travel singapore to johor bahru

With the frequency and number of buses connecting Johor Bahru to Singapore increasing, traveling by bus has become a popular way to get between these two destinations. But, in all honesty, there is not much to separate buses from trains as they are very similarly priced. Trains actually cost a little less than the buses, but when we’re talking about such affordable prices anyway, a dollar here or there is not going to make too much difference!

So, what are the buses from Johor Bahru to Singapore like? Well, there are several different types. Express buses are going to cost you considerably more but could be a good idea if you want to travel to the Woodlands area of Singapore. This is basically the closest part of Singapore to Malaysia, so it’s an area you’ll be traveling through no matter where you want to go. Non-express buses are more plentiful and include public buses and private operators, and there are plenty of both. Transtar Cross Border is one example – they operate ample services each day, starting as early as 5am and running as late as 9:15pm. Their buses depart from JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, and they go to Terminal 2 of the Changi Airport in Singapore, so it’s great if you want to go direct to the airport, but not so convenient if you don’t!

The scheduled journey time for these buses is 55 minutes, but in reality it could take several hours. This depends largely on how busy the border crossing is as you can sometimes wait a few hours here, especially during the busiest times which are usually Sunday evenings when going from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

The Transtar Cross Border buses can be booked online ahead of time, which is great for peace of mind, through the travel website 12Go.asia where you can see all of the scheduled departure times and costs.

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Train

Johor Bahru to Singapore by Train

With there not being much difference in the price of tickets between buses and trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore, you may be wondering whether there’s any reason to consider going by train. The simple answer is yes! There are actually quite a few advantages to traveling by train from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

KTM, the Malaysian state railway operator, introduced a new shuttle rail service in 2015 in order to take some of the traffic away from the roads and hence away from the Causeway where the busiest border crossing between Johor Bahru to Singapore is located. As well as helping to reduce the amount of traffic, it has also sped up the process for tourists and locals to cross into Singapore. This is because you clear customs before you even get onto the train!

This pre-clearance of customs means you get all of the paperwork out of the way in advance, and the whole process is far more streamlined. The gates open 30 minutes prior to the train’s departure time for this purpose, and close 10 minutes before departure.

Once you get on the train, it takes just 5 minutes to travel from Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore so will easily save you time over taking a bus, or driving yourself. Of course, you will only get so far as Woodlands so you will then need to transfer to travel right into the heart of Singapore, but this is easy to do.

There are over a dozen trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore every day, so you have plenty to choose from, but be aware that this has become a very popular way to travel and the trains can get booked up a week or more in advance. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you book your train tickets in advance which you can do online on the travel website 12Go . Their website will show you all the available departures and will allow you to book with instant confirmation.

With the more streamlined process for getting through immigration available on the trains from Johor Bahru to Singapore, this can really save travelers a lot of time over taking the bus. Going by train definitely avoids a lot of the uncertainty as to how long your journey will actually take, which can be a problem if you’re traveling to the airport to catch a flight.

5 Best Ways To Travel To Johor From SG (Apart From A Car)

avatar-name

Qistina Bumidin  •  Aug 18, 2023

Whether it's the long holidays, the weekends or you're in need of a short getaway, Johor has always been the go-to destinations for many of us! However, it does get frustrating having to deal with long traffic jams! We've rounded up 4 other ways to get to Johor, apart from a car! Follow us on Telegram for the latest updates: https://bit.ly/3LnFN1F

1. KTM's Shuttle Tebrau

When Malaysia’s KTM railway service returned on 19th June 2022, it's simply a godsend! Since July 2015, KTM’s Shuttle Tebrau ferries up to 320 passengers (plenty of seats for everyone!) between Woodlands and JB in 5 minutes flat - you can kiss traffic jams goodbye! Tickets from Woodlands CIQ costs SGD $5, whereas tickets from JB Sentral costs RM5; a truly affordable option for you and your road-tripping buds ? However, do note that limited tickets are sold, so it's advised that you purchase them at least a month before your expected arrival. Furthermore, if you do miss your train, be prepared to wait at least an hour for the next one, so come down to the stations at least 30 minutes prior the train departure!

How to go to Woodlands CIQ:

  • Head to Marsiling MRT. Walk out through Exit C and cross the overhead bridge to the bus stop opposite Marsiling Station.
  • Board bus 856 and alight from the bus when the bus arrives at the bus stop at Woodlands Centre Road.

Best option for:

Travellers on business trips or have to attend to urgent matters.

Where can I buy tickets:

In Singapore, you can go to Woodlands CIQ ticket counter. Purchases here are limited to only 4 tickets per transaction and ticket sales close about 20 minutes before the train departure time.

  • In Johor, the ticket counter at JB Sentral is located opposite to KOMTAR JBCC and JB City Square.

Tickets are sold out quickly during weekends. So, we encourage you to book in advance. You can:

  • Dial KTMB Call Center at +603-2267 1200
  • Buy tickets online at their website via this link . Register an account and payment can be done using credit card. Remember to print out the purchased tickets.

Other pointers to take note:

Photography around the station is strictly not allowed. You can snap pictures within the train carriages, however.

2. Causeway Link

Another popular mode of transportation many of us do take is the bus! There are two main bus operators that travels between Johor and Singapore everyday: Causeway Link and certain buses from SBS Bus transit. The prices are relatively affordable (ranging between SGD4-SGD6, depending on the terminal you depart from and route you're heading to), which makes it perfect for budget day trips! Additionally, in Causeway Link's website, you can even plan travel routes within Johor. What's even cooler is that some routes allow for cashless payments when you board the bus ; which further cuts down any hassle of having to purchase a ticket beforehand! More buses travel between both countries, which makes it easier for you to catch any of them! However, the journey might take between 40 minutes to 2 hours rides, which all depends on traffic condition, something you might be trying to avoid in the first place. However, last month, Causeway Link has started the first ever 24-hour cross-border bus service between Singapore and Johor at the Queen Street Terminal! You'll no longer have to worry about rushing to get the last bus, and you'll get to avoid peak hour traffic jams as well! More supper time ? Currently, the CW2 bus service starts at 6.30am at Queen Street Terminal, and the last bus leaves at 11.30pm. From the Johor Bahru checkpoint, you’ll be able to catch a bus from 4am to 10.30pm. From 1st August, buses between 12am to 4am daily will be considered part of the midnight service, and buses will arrive approximately every 45 minutes, though this may be subject to traffic conditions. The price remains the same as the regular service, with a trip to Johor Bahru costing SGD4.80 , and a trip back costing SGD1.50 (RM4.80) . You can make your payment via ManjaLink, Visa card, and cash. Best option for:

  • Travellers on a budget
  • Travellers going for a day trip (i.e no luggage, or not planning to purchase multiple items)
  • Youths and teenagers going for short/day trips

  • Causeway Link buses accept fare payment in cash and contactless card (only in certain stations). A printed ticket will be issued upon payment. At each checkpoint on the Singapore and Malaysian side of the border, all passengers must alight and clear customs before boarding the bus again.
  • Do note that you might have stand throughout the bus journey, as there are little seats available.

3. SBS Transit

This by far, is the most cheapest option on the list (prices starting as low as $1.50!), making it one of the most popular mode of transport! For starters, you can use your EZ-link card to pay for the trip! However, there are some disadvantages of taking SBS Transit buses directly to Johor. Firstly, the frequency isn't as high as those of Causeway Link's. In addition, the queue for customs via SBS Transit is much longer. However, you don't have to rule out taking SBS Transit buses. You can choose to take a bus from your location to any of these three bus interchanges: Boon Lay, Jurong East Bus and Kranji, before making the switch to Causeway Link buses ? Best option for:

  • Travellers who frequently moves between Johor and Singapore
  • Simply use your EZ-link card/NETS Flashpay card
  • Be prepared that your journey might take longer than expected, depending on the traffic condition.

4. BONUS: Cross-border taxis

Sometimes, the rush to catch the bus or train just seems way too hectic. And if you don't have a license, or you don't own the car but renting one costs a lot more (and some ride-sharing places do not allow their cars to be driven out of Singapore), the thought of the rush is already exhausting enough ? Here's where having someone else drive you around, while you rest in comfort, is the perfect solution to it all! You can choose your pick-up location at your own suited timing, or head to either Ban See Street Terminal, Changi Airport or Seletar Airport. You don't have to get off from the vehicle to clear immigration, AND you're not sharing it with anyone; so you do get your own seat ? While the cost is on the high-end of this list (approximately $60 per person), it's really handy if you're travelling with your kids or elder parents, who may find other modes of transport a tad too tiring and inconvenient. No additional charges are added; it's a flat Once you're done with your activities of the day, head to Larkin Terminal and get a Singaporean cab back home!

  • Travellers with large groups
  • Travellers with kids and elderly
  • You can either call our local taxi operators: Comfort Taxi (6552 1111), Trans-Cab (6555 3333), Strides Taxi (6555 8888), Prime Taxi (6778 0808)
  • Or walk in to Ban See Street Terminal and wait for a cab there.
  • You can also check out SGMY Taxi Service . They do not charge extra costs after you've made your booking.
  • Be prepared that your journey is subjected to traffic condition.
  • Do travel with large groups, as it's much cheaper than travelling alone or with less than 3 people via a taxi.

Top 3 airlines serving from Singapore to Johor Bahru

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

Orange juice change to mineral water . Should keep the orange juice.

No recognition for one World Emerald member. I got row 1 in business class and it was pathetic. No leg space, cramped space, less recline

Legs space in the business class cabin is too small and pillow is dirty!

Flight from Shanghai to Kuala Luumpur delay byy 3.5hrs with no real explanation.

Elderly individual shud be given priority to board the plane together with passengers with children and disabled. Otherwise things are OK.

Cabin crew as always are leaps and bounds the crowning glory of MH. Friendliness and natural warmth are such incredible traits. Food was very good on this flight also; and flexibility in meal time to accomodate rest was a plus point. Early arrival and landing as the first morning inbound at T4 LHR meant I was off the plane and in the queue for an Uber in less than 15 minutes!

Bad experience, delay like no tomorrow. Original schedule departure time at 9:30pm, delayed until 12:05am only depart.

Great. Very satisfied with a direct flight from Penang back to HK international. Stewards in the cabin were very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to fly with Air Asia in the future.

Second time flying on AirAsia. They’re fine for a low cost carrier, so I don’t expect high level hospitality. They could have informed us that the flight would be delayed even if by a few minutes, instead of the passengers asking the gate agents why we’re not boarding 8 minutes before takeoff. And given some of the passengers on this particular flight were problematic, the crew did great handling such people.

Meh, it was AirAsia. It's not about a quality.

Great flight. Achieve my objecttive of travelling with less hassle .

They didn't have a single blanket for hire for a long haul overnight flight. This wasn't good enough even for a budget airline

Kayak shares with you the best price! and in my case it was Air Asia flight. Air Asia flight was on time, the boarding was seamless with FACES technology at KLIA2 and the pilot made a great smooth landing upon arrival. Excellent trip!

I left the city late and fortunately the flight was also delayed 50mins

Air Asia’s standard has dropped tremendously post pandemic. The whole organisation feels ‘soul-less’

By the time the “sell “ cart came around to row 17 they were out of several items. This happened both leaving and arriving in Kuala Lumpur. Poor planning.

2 delayed flights - hotel layover in a different country- lost baggage.

Silly to not even offer people water for free when they are paying so much for tickets.

You get what you pay for. It’s functional and gets you from point A to B in good comfort. However, food options are limited and cash only, Crew is a hit and miss .. they get your attention if you reach out.

Good leg room ... air conditioning was a bit warm don't Book row 8 ... no windows

They got to the terminal late, with no one on the arriving flight, boarded us late, and left us sitting there for 2 hours before they got us off the ground. They knew they were going to be late, yet they never got an updated flight plan from their head office until long after the flight was supposed to leave. They could have cut the delay in half, of at least let us stay in the terminal. Really just horrible planning.

The worst kind of budget airline. To be honest....the plane was not that bad. Would have been good to have some food choices and some water. What was by far the worse is the passengers/customers that this airline attracts. Coughing and spluttering all over one another with no masks. Just disgusting. Pay for a better carrier and get a better class of passenger.

Singapore starts QR code clearance at busy crossing to Malaysia

Nikkei reporters traveling by car needed only 20 seconds at immigration counter

JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia -- Singapore on Tuesday launched a QR code-based clearance process at its land checkpoints for travelers departing from and arriving in the city-state by car, in an effort to ease congestion at its border with Malaysia, one of the busiest crossings in the world.

Instead of presenting their passports at a counter, travelers can scan QR codes displayed on their smartphones at Singapore's two land checkpoints connecting to Malaysia's southern state of Johor, where both sides are seeking tighter business links and better connectivity.

Travellers departing and arriving in Singapore by car can use a QR code to clear immigration at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints from Mar 19. CNA gave the new initiative a test drive.

SINGAPORE: For someone who has never driven across the Causeway, you’d think I would have made my maiden car trip to Johor Bahru as stress free as possible.

Instead, I chose to drive to JB on Tuesday (Mar 19) – the first day that the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) rolled out  QR code immigration clearance  – during the evening peak period. It was also raining.

With the QR code initiative, travellers heading in and out of Singapore by car at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints no longer need to present their physical passports to clear immigration. Physical passports are still required to cross Malaysia’s checkpoints.

These travellers can now save their passport details in the MyICA mobile app to generate a QR code. They can then scan this QR code once they reach the immigration counter.

QR code immigration clearance: What you need to know about ICA's new initiative

I’d already tinkered with the MyICA app prior to Tuesday’s drive and was surprised by how quickly I was able to get my QR code.

But the true test of the initiative, in my opinion, was how it held up during peak hours – such as, in the evening from Singapore to JB or in the morning from JB to Singapore on weekdays.

And so, at 5.20pm on Tuesday, I joined the line at the Woodlands checkpoint with thousands of other drivers returning to JB after a day’s work in Singapore, growing more anxious by the minute that something would go wrong once I drove up to the immigration counter.

Maybe my QR code would get rejected. Maybe the ICA officer would decide I wasn’t the person on my passport. Maybe I would drive into oncoming traffic.

Thankfully, the only things that went wrong were my doomsday predictions.

CLEARING SINGAPORE'S CHECKPOINT

To make my drive slightly less nerve-wracking, I went with my colleague Raydza Rahman, who regularly drives to JB. He would be able to tell the difference in time taken for immigration clearance using the QR code.

As passengers in the same vehicle can share one QR code by saving their passport details on one person’s MyICA app, both of us had logged our details in Raydza's app before we began our journey.

When we arrived at the immigration counter, it took Raydza a while to position his phone at the QR scanner from the passenger seat. Even then, it took us – a vehicle of two travellers – 55 seconds to clear immigration. This included the time taken for the ICA officer to verify our identities.

This also appeared to be about the average time it took other cars ahead of us to clear immigration.

It took us less time, however, to clear immigration at Malaysia’s counters with our physical passports.

But we were a car of two after all. I’d imagine a vehicle with more travellers might appreciate the substantial time saved from having to hand over their physical passports – and wait for everyone to be verified – at both country’s checkpoints.

Our journey across the Causeway, including immigration clearance, was done in under 20 minutes. Time check: 5.39pm.

According to Raydza, this was rare.

"IT'S VERY FAST"

Solo and group travellers we spoke to in JB, who had used their QR code to clear immigration on Tuesday, echoed similar sentiments.

Mr Akmal Ghazali, a Malaysian who visits Singapore about once a month for work, entered Singapore on Tuesday at around 8am and returned to JB at around 6pm.

It took him “less than 30 (seconds)” with the QR code at Singapore’s checkpoints, compared with his previous experience of handing over his passport. While he didn’t encounter any hiccups, he was also mindful that it was only the first day of the initiative.

“It’s very fast, it’s very good,” the 32-year-old medical representative enthused.

“I think (the QR code) is much easier. We’re (going) to have the RTS Link soon, so more Malaysians will be (going) to Singapore.”

Asked whether he hoped Malaysia would implement a similar system for their checkpoints, Mr Akmal cut us off excitedly: “Yes, correct, I do hope very fast (that Malaysia adopts the QR code too).”

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Henry Loh, whose family drives to JB once every few months, told us it would usually take them about five minutes to clear Singapore’s checkpoints.

“Today was shorter because you just need to scan the QR code. It was a breeze. (It was a) significantly different (experience) because you don’t see this often abroad,” said the full-time national serviceman (NSF) who visited JB for dinner with his parents on Tuesday.

“In the short term, maybe people ... might take time to get used to the new system. But once people know how to use the system, the travelling time between the two cities will be much more smooth.”

travel singapore to johor bahru

Singaporean Mohamad Yusir said he would appreciate a more efficient experience in the future. If not for the officer at the immigration counter who “kept repeating” information about the QR code initiative, his car of five may have cleared immigration faster, he said tongue-in-cheek.

The 58-year-old, who makes a weekly visit to JB from his home in Woodlands, said he “already knew these things” a week ago when he downloaded the MyICA app to log his family members’ passport details for their trip on Tuesday.

“When they introduced the QR code, they must have a reason – make it a quick and fast exit (and entrance) for everybody. It was easy, convenient for us.”

Mr Mohamad Yusir added that he hopes Malaysia will implement its own QR code immigration clearance too, if only so his family “can save money on the passport”.

Their passport pages have almost been used up way ahead of the expiry date, because of passport stamps the family receives every time they cross immigration checkpoints.

When Raydza and I finally made our way back to Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint at around 8.30pm, we were pros at QR code scanning.

This time, with me in the passenger seat holding out Raydza’s phone, it took us 12 seconds less at the immigration counter.

But perhaps the greatest satisfaction from my first attempt at crossing the Causeway in a car came from meeting a Singaporean family who had no idea the QR code initiative existed, despite frequently driving into Malaysia. They still used their physical passports to clear the Woodlands Checkpoint on Tuesday.

I promptly rattled off the convenience of the QR code as though I was the seasoned driver – and, seemingly sold by my pitch, they downloaded the MyICA app on the spot.

A guide to JB’s Ramadan bazaars: Which ones to visit, best time to go, what to look out for

In Singapore, there’s Geylang Serai and Kampong Glam, of course. But if you want to check out Johor Bahru’s bazaars, we break it down for you – including where to park and what roads to avoid.

David Ngiau

Malaysia turns into a wonderland during Ramadan. It’s the holiest time of the year for Muslims, who observe the month through prayers, spiritual reflection, giving to charity and  fasting from dawn to dusk. To celebrate breaking your fast at  dusk, there are huge open-air bazaars in pretty much every neighbourhood.

If you can’t see one, you’ll likely detect one nearby from the aroma of grilled lamb kebabs, laksa Johor, simmering bubur (rice porridge) and nasi kerabu from mid-afternoon to dusk.

And if you’re heading to Johor Bahru, or JB, during this period, you can't miss them – there are over 100 Ramadan bazaars planned this year. And in JB’s outlying towns, you can find even more: Kulai has six, Pontian and Kota Tinggi have nine each, while Kluang has a dozen . (And this site has got a pretty extensive list. )

travel singapore to johor bahru

Despite empty stomachs during the day, vendors and everyone else are generally in high spirits during Ramadan, more so at the bazaars with their welcoming, festive atmosphere with handicrafts, traditional clothes and other goods on sale. These bazaars are a real celebration of community, folks united by culinary cravings over creed and colour, and non-Muslim visitors are welcome.

WHICH BAZAARS TO VISIT

If you’re so inclined, you could visit two bazaars a day without ever having to circle back to one you’ve already done. You’d also be crazy, and a lot more “prosperous” around your middle kingdom thus needing to add new notches to your belt.

For the rest of us, here are a few of Johor Bahru's biggest and best-known Ramadan bazaars to visit and savour.

1. ANGSANA MALL

Thanks to its huge open-air parking lot and large empty plots of land adjacent, the Ramadan bazaar next to Angsana Mall in Tampoi has room to breathe. Thanks to all that space and organisers’ planning, ample room is allocated between the rows of stalls (whereas popular but poorly laid-out bazaars can be claustrophobic affairs).

travel singapore to johor bahru

The Angsana bazaar, one of the cleanest bazaars you’ll come across, has a huge circus-like tent for stalls selling snacks like keropok, Hari Raya cookies and festive clothes, while stalls cooking fresh food are just beyond. Meanwhile, an adjacent empty lot has just been completely paved over into a massive parking lot to make room for the bazaar crowds.

travel singapore to johor bahru

Alas, there’s not much room to breathe on the surrounding roads; severe congestion will mean 30 minutes to inch down a 1km stretch there during peak periods. There’s only one entrance to the aforementioned new car park, and there was already a long queue of cars to get in at 3.30pm on the first day of Ramadan.

Head instead for the service roads across from Angsana’s main entrance (facing thoroughfare Jalan Tampoi) and look out for used car dealer KH Lee at the junction or Jalan Dato Muthuthambi. Parking here will spare you nightmarish jams when you exit as you’ve easy access to Skudai Highway from here.

travel singapore to johor bahru

Of course, if you’re going early and there’s nary a soul about, go ahead and park right next to the entrance but make sure you leave before you’re hemmed in.

Ramadan bazaars typically start around 4pm, with some opening as early as 3pm, depending on the neighbourhood, patronage patterns and vendors. Being one of the earliest customers may not be a great idea as the bazaar won't be running at full steam with some stallholders choosing to start later.

If you’re keen to beat the crowds, the ideal time to go is around 5pm. To fully experience the atmosphere, head in at 6pm. If you go at 7pm, you’ll likely find empty stalls, especially the popular ones, having already sold out and the vendors will be packing up.

Iftar, signalling the breaking of the fast for the faithful, depends on the moonrise for the day and will as such differ from state to state. All fasting Muslims, including stallholders, will break fast at that time which means the bazaars will wind down after 7pm.

2. S’MART PANDAN

One of the biggest of all the Ramadan bazaars in Johor Barhu takes place in the car park of the granddaddy of JB’s pasar borongs (“wholesale markets”): S’Mart in Pandan on the Tebrau Highway. Most visitors from across the Causeway heading to Austin Heights, Aeon Tebrau or Ikea would have passed by this wholesale centre next to a drive-through McDonald’s. For smart grocery shoppers, it’s their primary target on any cross-border expedition.

With such a glowing reputation, competition for a spot at the Ramadan bazaar here is fierce among vendors. Previous years’ editions here have featured around 200 stalls so plan for more time browsing here, especially if it’s your first time.

travel singapore to johor bahru

The S’Mart bazaar, however, doesn’t look as organised and prepared as its Angsana rival, with two-thirds of stalls yet to be set up by 3pm on the first day of Ramadan. Angsana and Taman Suria’s bazaars, in contrast, were already bustling with half to two-thirds of stalls already running by around the same time.

As the wholesale centre’s entire front parking lot is taken over by the bazaar, finding a place to park your car will be a challenge in the streets surrounding S’Mart (full name “Supplier Smart”, incidentally).

Aim for Jalan Waja 4 to 6 to the south-west of the bazaar, which means turning off Tebrau Highway before getting to S’Mart if you’re approaching from downtown or Singapore. Parking here also means an easy escape route by heading to Jalan Angkasa Mas Utama on-ramp to the Pasir Gudang highway – this interchange is better known as the one next to the Johor HQ of the JPJ (the transportation department).

WHERE TO PARK

You don’t want to be that person trying to inch through hordes of hungry hunter-gatherers, even if they’re all in positive spirits during Ramadan. Even if you do score a spot right next to the bazaar entrance, you’re going to find yourself hemmed in by double-parked cars – if that happens, sabar lah (be patient), as most bazaar visitors don’t stay for long.

Bazaars will be set up in huge closed-off parking lots or along cordoned-off neighbourhood streets, sometimes in usual pasar malam (night market) locations. Particularly with the latter, be prepared to park a little further away on parallel lorongs (lanes) and maybe cut through the side-alleys on foot. If you absolutely have to double-park to allow your elderly relatives a shorter walk into the bazaar, make sure someone stays in or near the car to move it should another motorist need to leave.

If you’re taking a ride-hailing car in, trust the driver’s judgement on adjusting your drop-off location because insisting that she drive right up to the bazaar is not cool. The same goes for pick-ups: Don’t be waiting where cars can’t get to and then wonder why you’re getting cancelled on.

3. TAMAN SURIA (GIANT SOUTHERN CITY)

This big Ramadan bazaar is on the edge of the kampung heart of JB and within a few minutes of KSL Mall and Mid Valley Mall Southkey. Many consider this to be the prime Ramadan Bazaar of downtown. Situated in an open lot just outside the Giant Southern City supermarket, the area has its down-to-earth charm. A tip  – wear shoes, especially if it’s been raining.

travel singapore to johor bahru

Impressively, the bazaar was already humming along by as early as 2.30pm on the first day of Ramadan. Credit to the organisers for getting all the infrastructure and tents well sorted early, and to the vendors, of whom a majority were already busy preparing for the coming crowds.

travel singapore to johor bahru

This bazaar is v ery much worth a visit  – don’t need to bother heading to Larkin. You can even see  the towers of the Mid Valley Southkey from the bazaar. If you’re approaching from KSL, you’re in luck as access by Jalan Murni 8 from the south bypasses the perennially congested Tebrau Highway.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

The usual etiquette applies: Don’t dress skimpily and don’t be a snobby spendthrift chirping away about the conversion rate – while staying mindful that Muslims will be fasting during the day so resist the urge to wolf down that fresh goreng pisang (fried banana fritter) immediately.

A final note: Do your small part by bringing reusable containers or tiffin carriers to bungkus (takeaway) your food in recyclable carrier bags. It’s a gentle way to lead by example and influence positive change in reducing waste, at the very least.

4. BANDAR BARU UDA

One of the best-run and sizeable neighbourhood Ramadan bazaars is in Bandar Baru Uda (known to locals as simply “BBU”), not far from Angsana Mall.

Stalls ring a block of shophouses, on all four bounding service roads, rather than simply lining a single stretch as is typical in smaller neighbourhoods. BBU is one of the nicest, cleanest upper-middle-class suburbs in the geographic centre of Johor Bahru, after all.

Roads into the BBU bazaar are generally quiet, but check traffic data on Google Maps before venturing into this heartland. Set your destination for the Masjid Jamek Bandar Baru Uda, which is on the south side of the bazaar.

travel singapore to johor bahru

5. SOME NOTABLE MENTIONS

Every township and taman will have its own Ramadan bazaar so you don’t have to drive across town or into the heart of JB just to experience one.

If you’re looking for a more modern take, the J Seri Alam container cafe park in the far east and the Desa Tebrau food truck park (past Ikea in the north-east) will stage their own small bazaars.

In the west, the bazaar staged in the big back lot of Perling Mall is worth checking out. It’s spacious, neatly laid out, and parking isn’t a hassle with plenty of under-used service roads ringing the mall.

Digital economy proposed sector of focus for Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone

JOHOR BARU: The digital economy is one of the proposed sectors of focus for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), says state executive councillor Lee Ting Han ( pic ).

The Johor investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman said the state government had a few meetings with the relevant government agencies regarding the JS-SEZ.

Lee said that the digital economy was a sector proposed because Singapore has certain advantages in the region being a regional centre of connectivity in terms of data, digital economy and cyber-related matters.

“Johor is located next to Singapore and has the natural resources, talents and necessary ingredients to support and complement whatever the city-state has at the moment,” he added.

Lee said this at the opening ceremony of the NEC Malaysia office in Iskandar Puteri here on Wednesday (March 20).

Apart from the announced measures to ease the movement of people and goods, another work in progress is to allow the free flow of data between Johor and Singapore under the JS-SEZ, said Lee.

He added that Johor has also witnessed the rapid expansion of the data centre industry in the past two years.

“At the moment, we have four data centres that are up and running while 10 more are in various stages of construction and another 14 more are in various stages of discussion with the state government and federal government," said Lee.

“All these are the necessary digital infrastructure that will allow the digital economy sector to prosper and eventually attract the artificial intelligence and related industries to the region,” he added.

Lee also welcomed Japanese IT solutions company NEC for setting up its centre of excellence in Sunway City, Iskandar Puteri, adding that it would serve as a platform for Malaysian talent to equip themselves with skills needed to excel in the managed services and cyber defence industries.
