How to Turn Off AdBlock in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

While ads are an excellent way to keep resources free, they can take up too much space or spoil the browsing experience. This is one of the reasons ad blockers are a welcome addition. However, some websites don’t work properly when ad blockers are used. In this case, you can turn off the AdBlock in Safari.

How to Turn off Ad Block in Safari on iPhone iPad and Mac

When you turn off ad block in Safari, you essentially disable anything that can stop the ads. This includes the built-in content blockers and any added extensions. But can you disable the ad blockers in Safari for a single website? Let’s find out.

Should You Disable AdBlock in Safari and What Happens When You Do

Before we go ahead and disable ad blockers in Safari, let us quickly look at what happens when the full force of ads is finally unleashed on your browser.

  • Websites may load slowly: Ad blockers eliminate any extra ad content on the page, allowing sites to load faster. However, when they’re turned off, it might cause certain sites to load slowly as they load with the ads.
  • Trackers enabled: Certain website ads and other page elements contain trackers that help websites track your activity. While most ad blockers usually disable them, they will be enabled again once you remove the ad blockers.
  • Websites will load normally: Website elements might be picked up by ad blockers as ads, causing them to hide. This can cause websites to break or not load properly once the ad blockers are enabled.
  • Lifting restrictions: Some websites actively check if you’re using ad blockers. Once detected, they keep asking you to support them or stop you from accessing the site content until you disable the ad blocker and reload the page.
  • Support the Creators: While ads can be a nightmare, they can be extremely helpful in supporting the creator behind the website. Especially if they’re an independent entity. So, occasionally, it is good to turn off ad blockers to support your favorite websites.

While the reasons to enable or disable ad blockers can be many, it all comes down to your requirements. If the ad blockers are interfering with website content or are entirely blocked, you will have no option but to disable them.

How to Disable Safari AdBlocker on iPhone and iPad

The ease of using extensions in Safari on your iPhone and iPad to block ads helps make the online browsing experience easy. However, these extensions can also adversely affect and block important page elements. To prevent that, here’s how to disable ad blockers in Safari on your iPhone and iPad.

1. Using Individual Website Settings

Step 1: Open Safari on your iPhone. Then, tap on the aA icon in the address bar.

Step 2: Tap on Manage Extensions.

Step 3: Here, turn off the toggle for the relevant ad block extensions.

Step 4: Then, tap on Done.

This will disable the ad blocker in Safari and close the extension window. If you can’t see the option to manage extensions, turn off content blockers in Safari if they’re available. This will stop any ad blockers from running on the site.

2. Using the Settings Menu

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap on Safari.

Step 2: Then tap on Extensions.

Open Safari extension settings

Step 3: Here, tap on the relevant ad block extension.

Step 4: Turn off the toggle for Allow Extension.

If your browser still blocks ads or other page elements, try turning off content and privacy restrictions. This will ensure your device’s settings are not interfering with Safari. Here’s how.

3. Turn Off Content and Privacy Restrictions

Step 1: Open Settings and tap on Screen Time.

Step 2: Here, scroll down and tap on ‘Content & Privacy Restrictions’.

Open content restriction settings

Step 3: Turn off the toggle for ‘Content & Privacy Restrictions’.

How to Remove Ad Blocker in Safari on Mac

Similar to your iPhone and iPad, you can also use extensions in Safari on your Mac to block ads. Additionally, you can also use native content blockers to achieve the same feat. In this case, you must first turn off the content blockers and uninstall the extensions. This will help do away with ad blockers in Safari on your Mac. Here’s how:

1. Using Website Settings

Step 1: Open Safari and go to the menu options. Here, click on Safari.

Step 2: Then click on Settings.

Open Safari settings

Step 3: From the menu options, select Websites.

Step 4: Then click on Content Blockers from the left-side menu.

Open Content Blockers settings

Step 5: Here, use the currently opened website’s drop-down menu and change it to Off. This will help you disable ad block on many websites at once.

Turn off ad block

Step 6: Or, if you wish to disable it for all the websites, go down and click on the ‘When visiting other websites’ drop-down.

Step 7: Then, select Off.

Select the Off option

This will disable the native content blockers for all websites, regardless of whether they’re currently open. If you have any external ad block extensions installed, they will continue to function accordingly. In this case, use the extensions settings to disable them separately. Here’s how.

2. Disabling Extensions

Step 1: Open Safari on your Mac. Then, from the menu options, click on Safari.

Step 2: Here, click on Settings.

Step 3: Click on Extensions to see the currently installed extensions.

Step 4: Here, click on the ad blocker extension you wish to remove.

Step 5: Click on Uninstall.

Uninstall adblocker Safari

Repeat these steps to uninstall any other ad blocker in Safari on your Mac.

3. For a Single Site

Step 1: Open Safari on Mac and go to the relevant website.

Step 2: Then, click on Safari from the menu options and click on Settings for the website.

Open website settings

Step 3: Here, uncheck the Enable content blockers option.

Uncheck the option 1

This should immediately remove the ad blocker for the selected site. You can reload the page if you still can’t see any ads or the website content doesn’t load properly.

How to Disable AdBlock on Major Web Browsers

Avatar photo

AdBlock is a popular content filtering extension for major web browsers like Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

We also reviewed this extension in our best ad blocker roundup. As the name suggests, its main function is to block unwanted and annoying advertisements from being displayed when you surf the Internet.

However, installing AdBlock prevents you from accessing websites whose revenue are driven by display ads. For example, I wanted to visit CNN but ran into this warning instead.

I can easily whitelist those sites, but it’s going to be very time-consuming because I don’t know which sites are like CNN and which are not. Also, I want to ensure I never run into this problem again. So today, I am going to show you how to disable or remove AdBlock in commonly used browsers, step by step.

This guide is best for those of you who want to temporarily disable Adblock because you need access to a certain website, but you plan to enable it later on in order not to get spammed by those annoying advertisements.

Adblocker advert pop-ups continuously on my computer. They are more frequent and more annoying than pop-up adds. Because of these constant popup adblocker adds, I will never subscribe for Adblock.

I’m gonna transport back to 2010 before all this “ab blocking” b.s. That should do the trick.

BTW…does anyone have a working transporter available? Mine’s not quite finished yet.

I do not have ad block on chrome. The site still wants me to disable what isn’t there. So what do I do?

Mike Reynolds

I have been watching SBS on Demand without any problems, but today I get a message saying that there is a problem, and I should remove or disable an adblocker. I have never installed one of these. I can still access SBS on Demand on my TV. What can I do?

Kirk Brotemarkle

I have removed all of my ad blocker programs, but still get the warning msg on Firefox and Chrome. I am beginning to believe that there is something in the registry left over which is triggering the warning! But What? I have tried uninstalling the browsers and re-installing them with no luck. Is there a common file in the blocker programs which might make the browsers think I still have an ad block program installed?

Jack

P.S. The ads that are blocked are inside text of news articles. I have plenty of ads, but I’ve become totally blind to them. So why does the film company insist that I turn off my ad blocker.

You tell me how to turn off adblocker, but I have no adblocker once I get to where you send me nor anything that appears a possible blocker.

I have the misfortune to be on Chrome 10. I know that some ads are blocked, but I have no idea of what blocks them. I’ve been on this all evening when I’d hoped to see 2 films, but they won’t show with the mysterious adblocker blocking.

It would have been better in any case for your clear description to show how to whiteline than to shut down the whole thing.

So what’s the next idea?

Karen Becconsall

I dont have ad blocker i have standard protection,I have allowed pop ups and adds on sbs on demand,I have disabled personalize adds on google,I have tried the edge browser and followed directions on tracking, have allowed cookies , and updated the browser and NOTHING IS WORKING to get videos to play on sbs.Any advice?

Christine Davis

I can play videos from SBS On Demand on my mobile phone and tablet, but not on my laptop. I do not have an Adblocker installed, so are there any instructions for allowing SBS On Demand in this circumstance?

Penélope

I don’t have the Ad Blocker, and yet it gives this problem! 😥😪😓😓

for those who does not have the adblock, you can disable it this way: beside the url is a padlock icon (eg. (lock) google.com). click that icon and go to SITE SETTINGS. in the SETTINGS, scroll down the page until you see the ADS option and then select the drop down arrow across it and select ALLOW. the ads will now be allowed on the site you needed. note: i am a google chrome user. i don’t know if this is applicable for other browsers.

doug

I don’t believe you can remove ad blocker from Edge. Don’t know where you get your “info” you are sharing with everyone, but you need to make something else up.

How to Temporarily Disable Content Blockers in Safari for iOS

ios7 safari icon

Content blockers prevent ads like popups and banners from loading on websites you visit, and may also disable cookies, beacons, and the like to prevent online tracking and protect your privacy. Occasionally, however, they may unintentionally block a page element that you need access to, like a web form, for example.

If you suspect that a content blocker you installed is disabling a useful webpage element, or you just want to temporarily disable all blocking in your current browsing session, here's how to turn it off.

  • Launch Safari on your iOS device and navigate to the site in question.
  • Tap the "aA" icon in the top-left corner of the screen to reveal the Website View menu.

If you only want to disable content blockers for a specific website, tap Website Settings in the aforementioned Website View menu, and then toggle the switch beside Use Content Blockers to the grey OFF position.

Digital ads are a pain in the butt. No matter what you do, you can’t escape them. So, you block them for peace of mind, but that doesn’t always last because there comes a time when you must disable AdBlock—be it temporarily or indefinitely. But some websites that rely on ads don’t grant you access when you’ve blocked them, which can be a huge inconvenience.

  • You could unknowingly interact with adware.

Safari is, by no means, the leading browser, although it’s Apple’s native browser for iOS and macOS. In May 2020, TechCrunch reported that Safari accounts for 19.16% of internet users, with just over a billion users worldwide. Safari has a lot going for it. Below are some of the benefits of using Safari :

  • It features a simple interface
  • It’s straightforward to use
  • It syncs across your Apple devices seamlessly
  • It’s packed with privacy and security features, including protection against cross-site tracking, ad management that doesn’t infringe on user privacy, limiting the amount of data collected by the search engine, private browsing, and more.

You have two options for disabling AdBlock on Mac: disabling it on all websites and disabling it on one website. We’ll tackle the former later.

Here’s how to deactivate AdBlock on all websites in Safari on Mac :

  • Open the Safari app, click Safari in the top menu, and select Preferences > Extensions
  • Deselect A dBlock Engine and AdBlock Icon
  • Click Uninstall , select Show in Finder and drag the pre-selected application to the Trash (This step is necessary because installing the AdBlock extension on Safari on Mac also downloads the AdBlock app by default. To complete the process, you must delete the app, too)

uninstalling AdBlock on Mac via Finder

Note: Manually deleting applications from your Mac doesn’t always uninstall them completely. If you want to do a thorough job of removing an app from your Mac, use MacKeeper’s Smart Uninstaller . The tool removes every file associated with an app, including leftover files, which can be easily missed with the human eye.

The process of removing AdBlock in Safari is different on mobile. AdBlock doesn’t have the option to pause the extension temporarily on mobile, so you have to turn off content blocking for the site you’re on instead (unlike on desktop).

Follow the guide below to disable AdBlock in Safari on an iPhone or iPad :

  • Open the Safari app
  • Tap AA in the bottom-left corner of the screen and select Turn Off Content Blockers .

  • How to remove AdBlock from Firefox

As of April 2022, Firefox ranks third among the most popular browsers, with a 4.92% market share and 362 million users globally. Firefox offers key privacy and security features and add-ons for your safety. These include:

  • Enhanced tracking protection: Prevents known trackers from gathering data about your browsing activity
  • Total cookie protection: Prevents cookies from tracking you across various websites
  • DNS over HTTPS: Hides your online activity, particularly the websites you access, from third parties
  • Fingerprinting protection: Warns you about websites that collect settings from your device and browser. This prevents them from creating a digital fingerprint to profile you
  • Protection against phishing and malware: Allows Firefox to give you a heads-up when you’re about to visit a page that has been reported for a phishing page or that contains malware. Don’t fall victim to phishing—learn how to avoid the most common types of phishing attacks
  • Firefox Monitor: Lets you know if any of your online accounts were involved in a known data breach and warns you when you visit a website that’s been breached in the past
  • HTTPS-Only mode: Improves security by compelling connections to websites to use HTTPS, which is a secure, encrypted connection
  • Multi-account containers: Allows you to separate cookies into “containers”, so you can use the internet with multiple accounts. Facebook container makes it difficult for Facebook and other Meta sites to track you online
  • Firefox Relay: Masks your real email address to protect your account from hackers and possibly reduce the amount of phishing emails you receive.

The process of disabling AdBlock in the Firefox browser is straightforward. Here’s how to do it in Firefox on Mac:

  • Launch the Firefox browser on your Mac
  • Click on Tools in the top menu, select Add-ons and Themes > Extensions , and toggle AdBlock - best ad blocker off.

  • How to get rid of AdBlock on Opera

Opera is the browser for privacy-minded internet users. It has 350 million users and accounts for 2.26 percent of the market share (as of 2022). As a privacy-focused browser, Opera doesn’t disappoint when it comes to privacy and security features . Have a look at them below:

  • Ad blocker: This is a multi-layered feature that also blocks crypto mining scripts and the source of tracking cookies, and speeds up page loading times
  • Tracker blocker: Prevents online tracking by data collection methods like tracking pixels and analytic scripts. Blocking trackers also makes web pages load faster
  • VPN: Protects your IP address by masking it and connecting you to a server in a different location, anywhere in the world. This prevents hackers from tracking you online
  • Paste protection: Precludes cybercriminals to hijack your clipboard and change your sensitive information by monitoring for changes and reporting them. For example, if you copy and paste your bank account number into the browser, hackers can replace it with their own. Opera warns you when this happens.

Even though Opera has a built-in ad blocker, some users prefer to use AdBlock instead. You can disable AdBlock in the Opera browser.

Here’s how to cancel AdBlock in Opera on Mac :

  • Open Opera on your Mac and click View > Show Extensions in the top menu
  • Click Disable in the AdBlock section.

As with other browsers, there’s no AdBlock extension for Opera’s mobile browser.

  • How to stop AdBlock for one website

If you want to keep AdBlock enabled and only disable it for one website, that’s an option. This method works best for those websites you visit regularly because it improves load time.

Here’s how to temporarily limit AdBlock for a single website:

  • Go to the website you want to remove the AdBlock extension from
  • Right-click on the page, hover over AdBlock - best ad blocker and choose Pause on this site .

  • Access your favorite websites without interruption on Mac

Factors like web page load time and the security offered by browsers contribute to how we experience them. In addition to annoying pop-ups and banners, websites can compromise your privacy with hidden malware and adware.

Clicking on these could result in your personal information being compromised. Look out for these signs in your browser that your computer may be harboring viruses or malware:

  • Getting more pop-up ads than usual
  • New tabs refusing to close
  • The Chrome extensions and toolbars you’ve removed keep returning
  • The Chrome homepage or search engine randomly changing on its own
  • Chrome keeps redirecting to pages you don’t recognize or strange ads
  • You receive warnings about a possible virus on your computer.

You can play your part in securing your device by staying away from unknown, suspicious, and unsecured websites. Avoid clicking on ads and downloading software from unknown or shady sites. But if you want to experience websites better, the solution is removing AdBlock.

The helpful tips in this article should work for removing AdBlock easily. But if you’re looking for an efficient ad-blocking tool, MacKeeper’s StopAd is your best option. It’s an extension for Safari and Chrome that improves your experience by blocking banners and preventing advertisers from shoving ads in your face.

  • Natively block Safari pop-ups on iPhone: Settings > Safari > Block Pop-ups ( on ).

This article explains how to use content blockers to block ads in Safari on iPhones with iOS 9 or higher.

Your phone must have iOS 9 or higher to use content blockers. Update the iPhone OS to ensure it has the most up-to-date version with current security patches.

How to Block Ads on iPhone With Safari

Using an ad blocker for your iPhone means your browser won't download ads. This usually translates to faster page loads, a longer-lasting battery, and less wireless data usage. If you don't want to see pop-up ads, there is a way to block these ads. Here's how to do so using the Safari web browser for iPhone.

Content blockers are apps that add new features that your default web browser doesn't have. These are like third-party keyboards —separate apps that work inside other apps that support them. This means that to block ads, you need to install at least one of these apps.

Most iPhone content blockers work the same way. When you go to a website, the app checks a list of ad services and servers. If it finds these on the site you're visiting, the app blocks the website from loading those ads on the page. Some apps take a comprehensive approach by blocking the ads and tracking the cookies used by advertisers based on those cookies' URLs .

How to Install Content Blocking Apps

To block ads with Safari content blocker apps, install the app, and then enable it from the iPhone Settings app.

Go to the App Store and download a content-blocking app to your iPhone. The example here is Norton Ad Blocker, but all ad-blocking apps work similarly. See the list below for other suggested apps.

Open the ad blocker app and follow the instructions to set it up. Every app is different, but each offers instructions to turn on the ad-blocking abilities.

On the iPhone home screen, open the Settings app.

Select Safari > Content Blockers .

Move the toggle switch next to the ad-blocker app you installed to On (green).

Choose an Ad-Blocking Plug-In for Safari

There is a sizable market for ad-blocking Safari plug-ins. The following options can get you started:

  • 1Blocker : Free, with in-app purchases. In addition to more than 50,000 built-in blocker rules, this app supports custom rules to block sites and cookies and to hide other elements.
  • Crystal Adblock : At $0.99, the developer claims that this ad blocker loads pages four times faster and uses 50 percent less data. This app also lets you opt to view ads on some sites to support those sites.
  • Norton Ad Blocker : This free ad-blocking app from the company behind the popular and long-running antivirus software also lets you add exceptions.
  • Purify : Grab this content blocker for $1.99 to block ads and tracking software. It includes a list (typically called a whitelist) to allow you to see ads on some sites if you like. According to the developer, after blocking Safari ads with this app, you can expect a fourfold increase in page load speeds and your web browsing data usage to be cut in half.

How to Block Pop-Ups on the iPhone Natively

Ad-blocking apps can block all kinds of ads and trackers used by advertisers. If you only want to block intrusive pop-ups, you don't need to download an app because pop-up blocking is a built-in feature in Safari. Here's what you need to do:

On the iPhone home screen, select Settings > Safari .

Toggle the Block Pop-ups switch to On (green), if it isn't already.

You can enable the Safari pop-up blocker on your computer, too.

Why You Should Block Ads

The main benefit of blocking ads is that you don't see advertising. However, there are other key benefits to using these anti-advertisement apps:

  • Websites load faster : Ads are extra elements on the page that have to load, and ads often stream video or play animations. It takes time for the page to fully download and often causes other things like non-ad images and videos to take longer to display.
  • You'll be more secure : Many ads are vectors for malware. Infected ads hit a network, even a legitimate one, to disrupt your device.
  • You use less data : When you no longer see ads, you won't use your monthly data allowances to load ads. Some ad-blocking apps claim to save you lots of data. While their numbers may be inflated, you'll reduce your data usage to some degree because ad images and videos don't download to your phone.
  • A longer-lasting battery : Downloading ads, just like downloading anything in Safari, requires energy. One way to have a longer-lasting battery is to stop downloading so much data, which is what happens when you use an ad blocker.

Why You Shouldn't Block Ads

One downside you might encounter when you block ads on your iPhone is that some websites don't load properly. Some sites detect whether their ads load, and if ads don't load, you can't use the site until you unblock their ads.

Almost every site on the internet makes the majority of its money by showing advertising to its readers. If the ads are blocked, the site doesn't get paid. The money made from advertising pays writers and editors, funds server and bandwidth costs, buys equipment, pays for photography and travel, and more. Without that income, it's possible that a site you visit every day could go out of business. Consider supporting your favorite sites by whitelisting them, so ads on those sites still display.

How to adblock Safari and Chrome on a Mac

David Price

Annoyed by online adverts and want to get rid of them? You’ve come to the right place. In this article we explain how to easily block adverts, popups, trackers and more on your Mac, using a variety of free and paid-for tools in the Safari and Chrome web browsers.

We have a separate guide if you specifically wish to block autoplay videos on Mac . And another for those who wish to block ads on iPhone or iPad .

Before we proceed, please bear in mind that the site whose adverts you’re blocking probably relies on revenue from advertising. That may not worry you, and we know that some of the online advertising out there really does cross a line in terms of intrusiveness. Just don’t complain if a site you love suddenly closes, or starts to charge visitors, because people refused to view its adverts.

Adblock in Safari

We’ll start with how to block adverts using Apple’s web browser, Safari. IN this article we have details of some third-party ad blockers that work with Safari but you don’t actually have to install a third party ad blocker to not see adverts in Safari – you can just set up Safari to block ads for you, here’s how:

Block ads in Safari using Reader mode

Strictly speaking, if you want to block adverts in Safari on the Mac you’ll need to install third-party ad-blocking software – and we’ll talk about that in a moment. But a far simpler approach is to use Safari’s built-in Reader mode, which is practically as good.

Reader isn’t quite an ad blocker, because it blocks a bunch of other visual distractions too: sidebars, mastheads, comments, social elements, videos. (It’s the same principle as the ‘Read later’ services we discuss at the end of this article.) You just get the text and the pictures, which can be a far calmer experience than some of the more visually ‘busy’ sites.

As a general rule, you can activate Reader mode at any time, although it’s not really possible on Home pages of sites that feature multiple stories and links.

There are a few different ways to enable the Reader mode. Here’s how to enable Reader mode in Safari:

  • Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen and select View > Show Reader
  • Hit Shift-Command-R.
  • Click the Reader button (the one with three and a half horizontal lines) next to the URL bar.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader

This will then strip the page down to its bare bones, leaving only the content behind.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader mode

From Safari 11 onwards it’s been possible to be more sophisticated and tell the browser to always open article pages from particular domains in Reader mode – or even to use Reader by default all the time.

Here’s how to set reader mode up for certain websites:

When you’re on a site you want to give this treatment, go to Safari > Settings for This Website (or you can right-click the URL box and choose Settings for This Website).

How to block ads on Mac: Use Reader when available

You can also remove domains from, and add them to, the Reader list in Safari’s Preferences page. Click on Safari > Preferences.

Click on the Websites pane.

Select Reader in the left-hand column.

You’ll see a list of all the websites currently open and any you have configured to use Reader. Select the website you want to default to Reader mode and click the menu to the right of it and select On (or Off if you don’t want it to use Reader mode).

How to use Reader mode all the time on Safari

You can actually set Reader mode to be the default option on any website that supports it! Here’s how:

  • As above go to Safari > Preferences and choose Reader.
  • At the bottom of this page you’ll see the option: ‘When visiting other websites’. Set this to On and Reader will be activated by default on all compatible web pages.

Note that if you have a website that is already defaulting to Off then you won’t see it in Reader mode.

How to block popup adverts in Safari

If popup ads are driving you mad then you can quickly put a stop to them. Since Safari 11 it’s been possible to block pop-up windows via Safari Preferences.

In Safari 12 and 13 here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Preferences.
  • Select the Websites tab.
  • Click on the Pop-up Windows option in the left-hand column.
  • Now you can either make a rule for the website you’re currently visiting by clicking on the drop down menu to the right of its name, or go to the bottom of the window and click on the drop-down menu next to ‘When visiting other websites’.
  • Then select either Block and Notify, Block, or Allow.

Best ad blocker for Safari

Reader mode is a great solution, but if you want to block the adverts but leave the rest of the visual elements intact, you need to install a third-party ad blocker. There are lots of them out there, plenty of which are free, but tread carefully.

Our top recommendation is be the donation-ware Safari extension AdBlock, which deals with graphical ads, text ads and even ads in YouTube videos.

AdBlock also lets you whitelist pages on sites whose adverts you do want to see, to support them or because the ads may be useful. To whitelist the whole site you’ll need to upgrade to the AdBlock Gold level that costs £4.99/$4.99.

You can download AdBlock here .

If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, we recommend AdGuard . It comes in two forms: a free-to-use Safari extension and a £29/$30 app with a 14-day free trial. While the Safari extension is decent and acts in a similar way to AdBlock, the desktop app provides advanced features across macOS, not dependent on a particular browser.

As well as blocking ads and pop-ups from websites, you’re able to block tracking from most online sources and even be warned of malicious websites that you might stumble across online. It provides granular control over your ad blocking settings, allowing you to whitelist sites and self-promoting ads, and is incredibly simple to use.

You can download AdGuard here .

Best ad tracker blockers

Another pest online: trackers that follow your movements around the web to serve up ads. This is why you’ll be looking at a product on one site, then an ad for it magically appears when you visit another site.

To stop this intrusive (and frankly creepy) behaviour follow these steps:

Open up Safari and go to Preferences > Privacy and enable the ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’ option.

Block ads in Chrome on the Mac

Google’s Chrome browser is a popular alternative for Mac users, and even though Google is a full paid-up member of the advertising fan club, it allows plenty of scope for ad-blocking.

How to block Popups in Chrome

Let’s start by disabling popups, something which can be done from Chrome’s own settings – no need to install any extensions.

  • In Chrome select Chrome > Preferences.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced.
  • Below the heading ‘Privacy and security’, click the option Content settings.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Chrome

Best Chrome ad blockers on the Mac

As with Safari, Chrome won’t actually block adverts for you – and there isn’t an easily accessed equivalent of Reader mode. (Google has publicly discussed something similar called Distill Mode, but there’s no straightforward way for Mac users to turn this on without recourse to extensions.)

Many well known ad blockers are browser-agnostic, fortunately. The two suggested above – AdBlock and AdGuard – are both able to deal with adverts in Chrome.

‘Read later’ services

If you decide you don’t want to install an ad blocker, an alternative solution is to use a read-later service. These are simple systems that let you easily save an article in a form that strips out the adverts; you can then read if later (or right away, for that matter) without being troubled by all the visual tomfoolery.

Our favourite such service is Pocket . Sign up to the service and you’ll be able to create a ‘Read later’ button as a bookmark in Safari, Chrome or whichever other browser you like.

Open an article, click the button and it’ll save to your account. You can then read the ad-free version online (from any machine) or, best of all in our experience, offline using the iPhone app .

How to Customize AdBlock for Safari

AdBlock

AdBlock’s Blog

We all know that AdBlock for Safari begins blocking pop-ups and other annoying ads the moment you install the app. But did you know it can do more than that? Every user is able to make AdBlock their own by using their allowlist to support content creators they specifically love, switching to Dark Mode if they prefer, and adding VPN features to up their personal Online Health score.

Support Content Creators You Love

Content creators and web publishers are a part of the internet ecosystem, with many of them relying on ad revenue to survive. Take YouTube creators for example. There are roughly 15 million active content creators on YouTube , with 500 hours of content uploaded to the site every minute. That’s a TON of content!

And some of these creators have monetized their channel so they can use ad revenue as their income to keep on creating. If you love a YouTube creator, it’s easy to allow ads on their channel while blocking ads everywhere else. All you need to do is pause AdBlock for Safari temporarily while you watch the creator’s YouTube channel.

To pause AdBlock:

  • Open the AdBlock for Safari app.
  • Click on Pause Ad Blocking.

When you click Pause Ad Blocking, the web page you’re on will reload automatically. It may take a few moments for all of the previously blocked ads to appear.

Once you’re ready to begin blocking ads again, follow these steps:

  • Click on Resume Ad Blocking.

Again, the page will reload automatically and without ads.

What if a publisher or content creator you love isn’t on YouTube? If there’s a website that you’d like to always allow ads on, you can add it to your allowlist. This will automatically turn off AdBlock whenever you visit that site while keeping ad blocking turned off everywhere else.

To add a website to your allowlist:

  • Under Allow ads on a site or page , click Manage .

3. On the next screen, enter the URL of the site you want to add to the allowlist in the textbox and click Add Website.

Once the site is added, you’ll see it on your allowlist. And if you ever want to remove the site from your list, you can visit your allowlist again and simply delete it from there.

Use Dark Mode

AdBlock for Safari comes with Dark Mode. This means you can use the app while reducing the amount of light coming from your screen without compromising on visibility. It’s perfect for those users that prefer darker shades as they use their Mac!

Monitor Your Online Health Score and Use AdBlock VPN

AdBlock for Safari offers a new feature called “Online Health.” Online Health allows you to see how healthy your internet connection is in terms of online security . With this tool, you’re able to have more control over your internet connection by assessing your health score. You can up this score by using both ad blocking and VPN features to ensure that your connection is encrypted, private, and safe from third parties.

To increase your Online Health score to 100%, you’ll need to integrate the AdBlock for Safari app with AdBlock VPN. Why? Because using a VPN is a great way to increase your online privacy. VPNs create a private connection between you and the internet by allowing your web traffic to flow through a secure and encrypted tunnel. This tunnel between you and the VPN’s servers makes it difficult for third parties to see what you’re doing on the internet. With AdBlock VPN, you can hide your online identity , access unblocked content based on location, and securely use public Wi-Fi.

We designed AdBlock for Safari so that you have more control over your internet experience. From supporting the content creators you personally love to helping you stay safer on the web, we’ve got you covered! If you’d like to try AdBlock, head to the Mac app store to download the app. And we’re here for you at [email protected] should any questions come up along the way.
