Here's what travelers have to say about our travel planner

  • Excellent 238

user-avatar

Great and genuinely wonderful website that makes a proper vacation plan simple, like it should. All reviews are 5 stars. The only suggestion I have to enhance this fantastic website is to include a mobile application. Even paying for a version without ads wouldn't bother me.

Every traveller should use this!

So much easier & more helpful than a travel agency, given lots of fantastic ideas, and was extremely helpful for planning the trip. Would strongly advise my family and friends to use this!

Great tool for trip planning. Impportantly it's free and automatically tailors travel plans to your preferences and is completely customisable. The integration with skyscanner and booking.com, and other OTA like priceline and expedia makes it very easy to plan the whole trip along with the bookings in one place.

The 9 Best Travel Planner Apps of 2024

Proper planning prevents poor purchasing. Get ready for your trip the right way!

Planning the perfect trip can be almost overwhelming enough to take the fun out of what should be an exciting experience. Thankfully, many travel planning apps are available to help you organize your next getaway, right down to the smallest detail.

Best for Predicting Lowest Flight and Hotel Prices: Hopper

The Watch feature sends push notifications about good deals when it's time to commit.

Some fairly large airlines aren't included in Hopper's analysis.

Hopper's proprietary algorithm tries to predict where flight and lodging prices are headed shortly, letting you wait until the right moment to spring into action and book your trip at the lowest price. The app analyzes billions of prices per day and claims to predict what the cheapest one will be with a 95% accuracy rate.

Best Overall Trip Planner: Kayak

The Explore feature helps you decide on a destination, suggesting getaways all over the globe based on your maximum budget.

Doesn't always show all available flights on a specific route, potentially causing you to miss out on the best deal.

One of the top all-in-one apps for setting up a trip, Kayak searches hundreds of travel sites instantly to provide multiple deals on a flight, hotel, or rental car in the same location. Kayak also organizes everything in one place and includes up-to-date details on security wait times, along with airport terminal maps.

The app also measures your luggage using your phone's camera, informing you of potential fees and carry-on rules for most airlines.

Best for Helping You Remember the Essentials: Packing Pro

An impressive group of sample packing lists provides a good starting point if you don't want to make your own.

In-app purchases are inappropriate for an app you purchased.

Packing Pro is well worth the $2.99 if stuffing your suitcases isn't your favorite pre-trip activity. The app creates customizable packing lists considering essential factors like the trip duration, destination, expected weather conditions, food preferences, and more. Packing Pro's robust item catalog ensures that even the most unique dietary or religious restrictions are satisfied.

Best for Car or RV Trips: Roadtrippers

The hidden gems that can be discovered with this app.

GPS coordination isn't as good as it is in apps like Waze.

If dealing with long lines at the airport isn't your idea of fun, then Roadtrippers may be the app for you. Whether you're hitting the highway or off-roading, enter your starting and destination points and let Roadtrippers provide everything you need.

From campsites and outdoor attractions to unique adventures that are off the beaten path, this app is the perfect companion for planning an excursion, no matter if your mode of transportation is a small-sized rental car or a giant RV.

An optional yearly subscription unlocks advanced features, including live traffic monitoring and different map styles.

Best for Finding Bargain Flights: Skiplagged

Frequent travelers can save a significant amount of money.

Airline baggage fee policies can be murky, so read the fine print before booking.

By showing fares to connecting cities that are sometimes cheaper than a direct flight to that city, Skiplagged lets you book flights where you stay at the layover location (your destination) rather than continuing with the connecting flight. When it works, you spend less to reach your desired destination. Skiplagged also lets you book last-minute hotel deals.

Best for Avoiding Hidden Fees: Skyscanner

Offers protection to ensure car rental providers don't overcharge for fuel.

In rare instances, flight prices shown in the app are outdated.

Skyscanner should be included in some of the bigger all-in-one planning and booking apps. Offering reliable price alerts, integrated frequent flyer miles, and no additional or hidden fees like you might find elsewhere, Skyscanner usually follows through on its promises and is easy to navigate.

Best Itinerary Planner: Sygic Travel

If you don't want a planned itinerary, Sygic is useful for finding nearby attractions on-the-fly.

Access to Sygic's offline maps requires a paid upgrade to the Premium version.

Sygic Travel lets you plan a detailed itinerary for each day of your trip before you leave home, down to the last detail, like walking distances between attractions.

With over 50 million places included, many with 360-degree videos that make you feel like you're there, the app's smart search filters help you narrow things down to the perfect daily schedule. Collaborative city guides provide an easy-to-use snapshot of the most popular locales around the globe.

Best for Customer Reviews: TripAdvisor

The forums are a great resource for getting specific travel-related questions answered quickly.

Default rankings don't always correlate with customer reviews, so you often need to take a deeper dive to discover the best value.

A stalwart in the travel industry, TripAdvisor isn't unique in providing a one-stop-shop for booking good deals on flights, hotels, and restaurants for your upcoming trip, though it does a dependable job of each. The app sets itself apart with its customer feedback on airlines, lodging, food, and activities. By offering over 500 million opinions from real travelers who've been there and done that, TripAdvisor helps you make informed planning decisions based on others' past experiences.

Best for Organizing Confirmations and Reservations: TripIt

Send information manually, forward confirmation emails, or have the app automatically fetch itineraries from your inbox.

The default notification setting is for an annoying number of alerts.

When you plan a trip, it's not uncommon to receive multiple confirmation emails and itineraries from airlines, hotels, rental car companies, or other sources. Keeping all these details organized can be a hassle.

TripIt solves this problem by taking all your scattered information and organizing it into an easy-to-use main itinerary. This basic functionality is free of charge, while an annual subscription provides the ability to upgrade your seat on upcoming flights and track reward miles, among other perks.

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. The best trip planner apps to make your travels easier

gabriela-headshot

Booking a trip can be an exciting yet daunting task. As if booking airfare, hotel, and transportation weren't enough, you also need to consider food, sights, and attractions. As a travel lover myself, I often dread planning and preparing for a trip. Not only do I never have the time, but I often get oversaturated by the vast amount of information found online and the fear of getting scammed.

Also:  The best travel credit cards

Over the years, I've found the best websites and apps to help smooth out the planning process. These apps help me keep track of all my reservations, send me booking reminders, and guarantee I always find the best prices -- because there is nothing worse than falling for tourist traps or overpriced offerings.

Whether you are a spontaneous or a nitty-gritty planner traveler, ZDNET has tested and reviewed the best trip planner apps on the market. Our top pick for the best trip planner site and app is Booking.com due to its easy-to-use user interface, extensive booking capabilities, and pricing. However, since not every trip or traveler is the same, we've included several options to help you plan and stay organized during your travels.

Keep reading to learn more about ZDNET's expert-tested and reviewed trip planner apps.

The best trip planner apps of 2023

Booking.com, best overall trip planner.

 width=

  • Multiple bookings
  • Great deals
  • Can earn points from bookings and reservations
  • Easy to use
  • No group planning
  • Can't organize bookings per trip

Booking.com features:   Platform: App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

When planning my trips, I always make a stop at the Booking.com app, especially when reserving hotels. I find their user interface visually appealing and easy to use, and that it provides just the right amount of information I need when scrolling through hotel suggestions. Personally, I enjoy that I can add my top picks to my favorites with a quick tap of a heart, glance through reviews, look at cancellation policies, and even find out how far away hotels are from key spots. Through Booking.com, you can also book flights, car rentals, taxis, and city attractions, making it a great all-in-one place to plan and book upcoming weekend getaways or longer vacations. While I have personally never used the car rentals, taxis, or city attractions components of the app, I enjoy knowing that if I ever needed to, I can quickly hop on my phone and glance at the latest offerings.

My favorite feature when using Booking.com to plan trips is the offers and promotions it displays for users. In the app, when you click your profile, you can see your "Genius" loyalty program status as well as discover the best deals around the world for your specific chosen dates. My only critique of Booking.com is that it does not enable group trip planning or let you organize your bookings per trip. This means if you are planning a trip with a friend, only one person can book and have access to reservations.

TripIt features:   Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility: iOS and Android | Pricing: Free or $49 per year | Booking: No | Group planning: Yes

In terms of planning a trip, creating an itinerary, and keeping all your information in one place, TripIt is one of the best travel apps to keep yourself organized. When you first create an account, TripIt will sync with your inbox and automatically add all of your upcoming flights and reservations to your account. You can then modify each trip to include as little or as much information as you'd like. As someone who likes to be spontaneous when traveling, I usually only add the essentials: flight information, hotel reservations, and important documents. However, if you like to plan your trips down by the hour, you can also include activities, restaurant reservations, transportation, and more in your trip plan to share with fellow travelers.

As your trip approaches, TripIt will also send you packing reminders, give you COVID-19 travel guidance, and show transportation options. While you can get most of the essential features within the free version of the app (this is the one I use), you can also pay $49 a year to get advanced features such as check-in reminders, real-time flight alerts, point tracking, and even notifications for drops in airfare prices.

Keep in mind that while TripIt gives you transportation options and finds places near your hotel, you cannot book or make any reservations directly from the app. The app is solely used to organize and keep track of all of your travel plans in one place, no matter where you book them.

Best AI trip planner

 width=

  • Personalized travel itinerary
  • Hotel booking
  • Can modify recommendations
  • Group planning enabled
  • Only available as a website
  • No flight or restaurant booking

Guide features:   Platform: Website  Compatibility: all major browsers |  Pricing:  Free | Booking: Yes, but hotels only | Group Planning: Yes  Generative AI is everyone's favorite buzzword this year, and slowly but surely, it has been making its way across all industries -- including the travel industry. Guide is an innovative AI travel planning tool that creates personalized travel itineraries based on your preferences. (Full disclosure, it's also owned by ZDNET's sister company. It's currently in private beta, but you can join a wait list.) All you need to do is select your destination, the dates, whether you are traveling alone or in a group, your budget, and the types of activities you are looking for, and Guide will do the planning.

After generating a trip itinerary for you based on your prompt, Guide then lets you modify and customize the itinerary to your liking. I recently used Guide to plan a six-day trip to Austin, Texas, and this was the feature I enjoyed the most, since I had specific restaurants and activities I wanted to incorporate into my trip, but I also needed some additional recommendations. While you can't book flights or restaurant reservations through Guide, you can book and find great hotel deals powered by Expedia on the platform.

Guide will also give you an overall budget for your trip, a packing list, and a comprehensive list of things to know about your destination -- which may be helpful for some more than others. While my trip to Austin was a solo trip, Guide has a feature where you can invite other fellow travelers to collaborate in planning your trip through Guide's chatbot, GuideBot. This chatbot also works sort of like ChatGPT, where you can ask GuideBot questions about your trip, your destination, or recommendations. Keep in mind you can not ask GuideBot to directly modify your trip for you, and instead need to manually do it yourself -- believe me, I tried.

Tripadvisor

Best trip planner app for reviews.

 width=

  • Countless reviews
  • Used by travelers worldwide
  • Variety of information
  • Booking capabilities
  • Great for local spots
  • Booking is not its strongest feature and you may not always find the best deals
  • Doesn't vet reviews

Tripadvisor  features: Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

Reading customer reviews is one of the most important steps when planning a trip. While you shouldn't base all of your decisions on reviews, you should consider past customer experiences to get a feel for the brand and company you are about to trust, or the experience you are going to pay for.  When it comes to travel reviews, Tripadvisor is the best trip planner app to rely on. Since the platform has so many reviews for restaurants, activities, accommodations, and locations all over the world, it is always easy and convenient to log onto the app or website to help you make an educated decision. (However, remember that not all Tripadvisor reviews are legit, since the platform does not independently verify customer postings.) Beyond reviews, TripAdvisor also lets you book hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more while also providing detailed insights into their offerings -- including cancellation policies, ratings, and features.

Tripadvisor's "Travelers' Choice" best-of list is also a popular part of its platform, allowing visitors to see top-rated destinations, hotels, restaurants, and things to do around the world. With Tripadvisor, you can plan a trip yourself from scratch, hire a trip designer, or get a custom itinerary built by AI.

Best trip planner app for transportation

 width=

  • Great multi-mode travel comparison
  • convenient and seamless transportation booking
  • Multiple currency and language availability
  • Flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest
  • Limited offers depending on the country or city of travel
  • Not the most reliable customer service

Omio features:  Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes, transportation only |  Group planning:  No

I first discovered Omio when a friend recommended it to me while I was studying abroad in Spain, and ever since I downloaded it, it has become my go-to app for booking the best deals and fares on transportation within Europe. The concept behind Omio is simple: You plug in your departure and arrival location, including the number of people you are traveling with, and add whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip journey. Omio will then show you the best deals by train, bus, or plane to and from your desired destination, including how much time each option will take you and the number of stops.

The German-based travel booking site is great at aggregating travel information from multiple sites, allowing you to view all of your transportation options in one place. This is incredibly beneficial when planning trips within Europe since there are several ways you can cross each border and often various languages and regulations to keep in mind. Omio is set in English but has multiple additional languages available, as well as currency options. During my time abroad, I solely used Omio to book all of my transportation, including planning a 17-day trip across seven different European countries. Overall, using Omio was not only convenient and seamless but also helped me save hundreds of dollars by helping me maximize my travel time by switching between flights, trains, and buses.

However, since returning from Europe, I have not used Omio as much as I thought I would -- maybe because I have a car and take most of my trips by plane. And Omio's flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest compared to Booking.com or Skyscanner's, which heavily focus on flight deals. I have also found they have some limitations depending on the country or city you are traveling in. Be mindful of the deals and tickets you buy through Omio since some tickets are non-refundable, and some customers complain their customer service is not the best -- although I have yet to have any issues with them.

What is the best trip planner app?

Booking.com gets our vote for the best trip planner app due to its wide selection of accommodations, its points and promotions offerings, and its easy-to-use user interface. Not only does Booking.com help you find the best deals throughout your trip, but it will also help you stay organized throughout your trip by keeping all of your reservations in one place. To determine which trip planner app or combination of trip planners is best for you, check out this comparison chart below.

Which is the right trip planner app for you?

The best trip planner app ultimately depends on your travel and planning style. If you like booking and planning everything in one place while also earning points and getting great deals, then Booking.com is your top app. However, if you are looking for a place to keep all of your accommodations, reservations, and activity details organized, then TripIt is a better app for you. Check out the following chart to help you find the best trip planner app or a combination of apps for you to plan your next adventure.

How did we choose these trip planner apps?

To find the best trip planner apps, we drew upon real-life experiences and tested their performance and capabilities during our latest trips. Ultimately, we weighted the following factors when choosing which trip planners to include on our list:

  • Features: Each app can vary significantly with the features it offers, whether it is solely to book flights and hotels, help you plan your next trip using AI, or help you find the best deals and booking information, each app on this list can help you address several common inconveniences that present themselves while planning that next adventure.
  • Compatibility: An app is of little use if it does not work with your devices, so we look to see what compatibility each trip-planning app offers and which platforms you can access it from. Personally, I enjoy apps that combine an app and website component since this quickly helps me switch between my wide computer screen and my tiny yet portable iPhone screen.
  • Customer reviews: We study real customer reviews and ratings to evaluate customer satisfaction and service. This is incredibly important since most times when you travel, you visit an unknown city or country, and you should be mindful of past experiences others have had.
  • Cost : Most trip planner apps are free, but you may have to upgrade to receive special access to exclusive features or deals. If your app is already free, it means you only have to pay a small amount (often unnoticeable) when you book your accommodations.

What is a trip planner app?

A trip planner app is an app that provides organizational features for your upcoming trip. It is often free and incorporates trip planning tools, whether you are traveling by ground, water or air.

How does a trip planner app work?

A trip planner app can incorporate special features, like an itinerary, calendar, reservation and booking hub, and map assistance. Depending on the app you choose, there is even trip-sharing with friends and family to simplify the entire trip planning process.

How much does a trip planner app cost?

Most trip planner apps are free, but some may offer in-app purchases to upgrade or enhance your experience. Within this list, only Tripit costs money, but only for their advanced features version, which costs $49 a year. However, you can get access to most if not all, trip-planning features, through their free version.

Are there alternative trip planner apps worth considering?

As I mentioned earlier, trip planning heavily depends on your personal style of travel and preferences. However, whether you like to plan your trips down by the minute or prefer to just have the basics, there are several apps that can optimize your planning. Here are a few apps worth considering that almost made it onto our list:

sunset looking out to ocean over upper pool at fairmont kia lani in maui

I Vacationed at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui. Here's What to Expect

The final touches of a large-scale renovation deepen the resort's connections to the Hawaiian community. Peek inside its new cultural center and farm-to-cocktail bar.

One resort that offers all those components is Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui. Built in 1991, this 22-acre tropical escape has long been known for the most spacious suites on the island, a private sand beach tucked between volcanic rock outcroppings and tidal pools, beautiful architecture, excellent amenities, and a hospitality team that embodies the spirt of aloha.

This past winter, the resort finished a renovation of its open-air lobby that incorporated a large cultural center that's open to the community, a new destination bar that showcases unique local ingredients, and a native Hawaiian garden that adds to the resort's existing collections of native and culturally significant plants. The project is the last piece of a bigger transformation, which included an overhaul of the suites and villas completed the year before.

Of course, the focus on local is not new for the resort. Its award-winning restaurant Kō has been cooking up thoughtful Hawaiian cuisine using fresh local ingredients since 2012, while cultural experiences like the outrigger canoe excursion, which highlights the importance of the sea-faring vessel to the Hawaiian people through a guided outing on the Pacific, have long helped guests make deeper connections. And, a personal favorite, the resort has a program that encourages guests to give back by supporting local reforestation efforts.

Recently, I was invited to visit the resort and check out the transformation. Here's what to expect during a stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani, whether it's your first time in Hawaii or you've visited this resort for years but want to see what's new. I also share my favorite eats and my top nine helpful things to know if you are planning a vacation there.

An enormous, yet still cozy, lobby

cozy seating and lush plantings in newly renovated lobby at fairmont kea lani 2024

The first thing I did when I entered the open-air lobby was look up. Soaring arches and a multi-domed ceiling make it hard not to, but the furnishings and decor are what beckon you to sit and stay while. Like the interiors of the renovated suites and villas, the lobby's hangout spaces are fresh, modern, comfortable, and imbued with thoughtful nods to Hawaiian history and culture. The tall waterfall-like fountain is another "wow" feature.

Hale Kukuna, a place for sharing Hawaiian culture

hawaiian cultural center with books, artifact replicas out in the open, real artifacts in cases, tables, chairs

Hale Kukuna is the new oceanfront Hawaiian cultural center housed in the Fairmont Kea Lani lobby, and it is open to guests and the community alike. It features a curated collection of Hawaiian books, implements, relics, and artworks.

Not to worry—it’s not one of those “look but don’t touch” situations. Though some items, such as artifacts on loan from Hale Ho‘ike’ike (the museum at Maui's historic Bailey House), must be protected in cases, this space is kid-friendly and you are welcome to interact with the replicas out in the open. There's plenty of seating and tables for spreading out and lingering too.

Have a question? Just ask, says Kamahiwa Kawa'a, the resort’s manager of Hawaiian culture. During the day, there will always be a member of his team there to shed light. The center is, after all, meant to be a house of enlightenment. The name Hale Kukuna, which was chosen by the resort’s cultural advisory board along with the lineal descendants of Palauea, the area where the resort is situated, combines the Hawaiian words for “house” and “rays of sun.”

The center is also the spot for cultural programming and workshops, such as ohe kapala (that's carving bamboo and using it to stamp designs on an ultra-soft traditional bark cloth known as kapa), kuku kapa (that's making the kapa by pounding sheets of soaked bark), kuʻi kalo (that's making poi, a staple food, by pounding kalo corms), and hula dance.

“The opportunity to create and share a space dedicated to Hawaiian culture at the heart of Fairmont Kea Lani is an honor that comes with immense kuleana [responsibility],” says Kamahiwa (pictured). “Our vision and intention for Hale Kukuna is to serve as a space for both poʻe hoʻokipa and malihini [community and guests] to create meaningful connections with the culture, history, and spirit of this place—and in doing so, develop a deeper respect for this ʻāina and place we call home.”

Pilina, a travel-worthy bar

trio of elegant cocktails at pilina with a view of palm trees and the sun setting over the ocean

Pilina is the brand-new, breezy bar off Fairmont Kea Lani's lobby. When developing the cocktail menu, Cameron Hall, Pilina's general manager, set a high bar: “There are a couple of venues in Maui I would want to travel to for a cocktail,” he said. “I wanted to create another of those places.”

With a focus on local ingredients and a Hawaiian name that means “connection,” this culinary hotspot serves libations, light bites (think sushi, raw dishes, and high-quality proteins and vegetables cooked on hot rocks) and desserts that showcase Hawaii’s local farmers, ranchers, fishermen, distillers, and brewers.

One sip of Pilina’s Mauka (Toward the Mountains) cocktail and Cameron has won me over. Pilina is a travel-worthy bar. With Fy Hawaii Wet Gin, ʻŌhiʻa Lehua Honey, Aliʻi Kula Lavender, Butterfly Pea Flower, and Smoked Big Island Bee Pollen, this refreshing botanical drink distills the essence of Hawaii’s mountain landscape into a glass. And that frothy top finished with a honeycomb design (pictured below) is oh-so Instagram-worthy.

mauka cocktail at pilina topped with foam with honeycomb design on top made from flower pollen

Whatever your taste, you will find a finely crafted cocktail, spirit, or brew to entice you with distinct Hawaiian flair. Black Hawaiian Lava Salt garnishes the glass of Pilini's imaginative riff on a margarita—the Aloha, Vaqueros with Waikulu "Smoke Pepa" Maui Agave Spirit, a jalapeno shrub, and calamansi lemonade. There’s even a bespoke rum blend created exclusively for Pilina with Kuleana RumWorks (a must-try for rum connoisseurs that is quite different from what you'll find in Jamaica), and a Pilina Golden Ale brewed by Maui Brewing Company.

On Pilina’s zero-proof menu, I loved Smooth Sailing. This light drink is, indeed, smooth sailing with a grilled pineapple shrub, coconut water, and Seedlip Garden 108 (a nonalcoholic spirit), finished with a hint of sesame oil that balances it divinely.

The most spacious suites

suite at fairmont kea lani maui

The recently renovated suites at Fairmont Kea Lani blend Hawaiian-inspired decor and art with comfy modern furnishings, like a couch the whole family can sprawl out on and soft-underfoot rugs so stylish I was coveting them for my own home. Note the light shade over the bistro table—it is modeled after a traditional Hawaiian fishing basket.

suite at fairmont kea lani maui

The thoughtful decor continues in the bedroom (note the detail of the carved wood tropical leaves along the wall behind the bed). And that bed is a dream.

Though I was traveling solo , there are plenty of ways to right-size the one-bedroom suite for a family or close-knit girls' trip crew. You choose between one king or two double beds. The couch is a sofa bed, and you can request a rollaway bed (for a small fee) or a crib (for free).

The spa-like bath includes a double vanity sink, tub, walk-in shower, and private water closet.

ocean view from suite balcony at fairmont kea lani maui

This was the actual view from my ocean view suite (I'm still not quite over it). But whatever your view (ocean, garden, pool, or other), most suites are 860 square feet, which is lots of room to spread out. Some larger suites (1,100 square feet) and villas are available, too.

All the delicious things I ate

chef at ko restaurant at fairmont kea lani

A nice aspect about dining options at the resort, including Pilina, is that they are for most part open-air and ocean-side. If you head to dinner or cocktails just before sunset, your dining experience will feature the soothing sounds of the torch lighting ceremony in the courtyard. On the patio at Nick's Fish Market, my table was right by a torch, so I had a front-row seat to hear the blow of the conch shell horn (pū) and solemnly beautiful chant (oli).

The following by no means covers all the amazing food at Fairmont Kea Lani, but here's everything I ate and loved.

Fine Dining at Kō

Kō is the Hawaiian word for sugarcane. This land's earliest human settlers, Polynesian voyagers traveling by canoe some 800 to 1,000 years ago, brought kō along with many other essential food sources and cooking traditions to the islands. Later, during Maui's sugarcane plantation era, workers from all over came to Hawaii to work the fields, bringing along their native Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese cuisines. Today led by Executive Chef Aris Aurelio, who continues Kō in the tradition of its founding chef, Tylun Pang, the restaurant honors this diverse Hawaiian food heritage using local produce, meat, and seafood.

What I ate at Kō : Lavender Honey Crispy Shrimp for an appetizer (amazing), and for the main course, Chicken Red Curry, which was so comforting and received Country Living editor bonus points for being served in a small cast-iron pot.

Fine Dining at Nick's Fish Market

This seafood restaurant with a top-notch wine list is independently owned, but it has resided in a prime location at the resort for decades and is a local dining institution in its own right.

seared rare yellowfin tuna slices with saki mustard beurre blanc and avocado mango papaya relish on rectangular dish

What I ate at Nick's Fish Market: B&B Ahi with sake-mustard beurre blanc and a mango, papaya, and avocado relish for the appetizer (pictured; wow!), and for dinner, Fresh Island Catch Piccata.

Casual Fare Favorites

  • Breakfast at Kea Lani Restaurant: This buffet has just about every breakfast food you can imagine, including an omelet station. After day one, I found myself veering toward the traditional Hawaiian favorites. (Fried rice and pork dumplings for breakfast? Yes, please.) Also, you can feast on all the perfectly ripe mango, papaya, and pineapple your heart desires.
  • Lunch at AMA: This breezy spot features a swim-up bar beside the upper pool (above the waterslide). I grabbed a table and ordered the Buddha Bowl. With purple sweet potatoes , ancient grains, chickpeas, edamame, cucumbers, and green goddess dressing (chicken, shrimp, or fresh catch optional), it was comforting and just made me feel good.
  • Also check out MAKANA Market + Café and the beachside food truck ' Opihi for casual fare. You can also order lunch, snacks, or drinks poolside.

Top 9 things to know if you're staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani

lei made of pink orchids

1. Hang on to your lei.

The fresh flower lei that you receive at check-in is made of orchid blooms that hold up an impressively long time. So even if you're just keeping it on display in your suite, enjoy it throughout your stay. Just keep it out of direct sunlight.*

2. Cross "staying hydrated" off your list of things to worry about.

One-use plastic bottles are not good for the ocean environment, but the resort has a convenient solution. Every guest gets a reusable, recyclable aluminum bottle that they can refill at PATH Water stations found all over the resort.*

3. Every floor has a washer-dryer.

It's shared among all guests, so you must seize the opportunity when it's available. But it's good to have the option. Laundry detergent pods are sold at the resort's MAKANA Market + Café or buy them locally.

author's personal photo of view from inside of pool cabana looking out at sky

4. Renting a private cabana for a day is a worthy splurge.

Get lost in that beach read and take a nap in the shade after a leisurely swim. Nosh on your fill of complimentary snacks (tropical fruit, crudité and dip, macadamia nuts) and stay cool with a mini fridge packed with non-alcoholic drinks. There are cabana rentals to fit groups from two to eight people, with options at the upper- and lower-level lagoon pools as well as the adults-only pool. (Poolside cocktails and other menu items are extra.)

5. Save room in your beach bag—sunscreen is available at the pools and beach.

Sure, you still might want to pack your favorite reef-safe sunscreen for your trip. But if you're flying with only a carry-on like I did, you can skip fretting over how to fit all the sunscreen you will need within FAA-approved containers. You'll find sunscreen and after-sun care poolside and at Polo Beach, along with towels and other amenities.*

6. Prepare to explore.

While the resort provides complimentary car service to restaurants and shops in the surrounding Wailea resort community, if you want to get out and explore the island, whether it's for a hike, shopping, dining, volunteering , or visiting the museum at Maui's Bailey House to learn even more about Hawaiian history, you'll want a rental car. Rest assured that you've got a spot to park it at the resort.*

7. Kids under 5 eat free!

Keiki is the Hawaiian word for child, and the Keiki Dining Program (available at Kō, Kea Lani Restaurant, and AMA) is for your littles. Kids 6–12 can also order from the keiki menu or order a smaller portion off the main menu for half the price.

8. December to April is whale-watching season.

If you want to whale watch, plan your trip date accordingly. Fairmont Kea Lani offers a guided boat tour that takes guests to the best spots for seeing humpback whales. You can also just sit a spell on one of the benches overlooking Polo Beach and gaze out over the ocean—watch long enough and you just might be rewarded by a tail flip in the distance.

9. Don't miss Wailea Beach Path.

Hop on this 1.6-mile path right by the resort's entry to Polo Beach. I even saw a rainbow on my walk!

*Included with the $50/day resort fee, which also covers fitness classes, cultural activities, snorkeling equipment, wifi, and more.

Biden and Trump to hold competing trips to the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday

President Joe Biden will make a rare visit to the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday, the same day former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit the southern border.

"Biden will travel to Brownsville, Texas to meet with U.S. Border Patrol agents, law enforcement officials and local leaders," the White House said in a statement.

"He will discuss the urgent need to pass the Senate bipartisan border security agreement, the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border in decades," the statement said. "He will reiterate his calls for Congressional Republicans to stop playing politics and to provide the funding needed for additional U.S. Border Patrol agents, more asylum officers, fentanyl detection technology and more."

politics political politician

Two sources familiar with Trump's planning told NBC News that he Trump will deliver remarks at Eagle Pass, Texas, which is about 330 miles from Biden's stop.

Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the White House is sending Biden to the border because, she claimed, he's "losing terribly" in the 2024 race. "Biden’s last-minute, insincere attempt to chase President Trump to the border won’t cut it," she said.

Commenting on his plans after a campaign meeting in New York on Monday, Biden told reporters, “I’ve been planning on going Thursday.

“What I didn’t know is my good friend is apparently going,” he added, referring to Trump.

Biden declined to comment when asked whether he would be meeting with migrants during the trip.

Biden last visited the border in Jan uary 2023 , which was his first trip there as president.

His rare visit to the southern border comes as Trump and Republicans continue to attack his administration's handling of migrants crossing into the U.S.

Immigration is certain to be a key issue in the general election cycle as GOP candidates ramp up those attacks on the president and Democrats, while Biden has scolded Republicans for failing to take legislative action to address the influx of migrants.

An NBC News poll from January found that 57% of registered voters said Trump would handle securing the border better, while 22% said the same for Biden. The same poll found that 48% of people said they would trust Biden to treat immigrants humanely, while 31% said the same of Trump.

Earlier this month, Senate Republicans killed a bipartisan border security and foreign aid bill whose key negotiator was Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla. Republicans ultimately decided to sink the legislation after some urging by Trump.

And as Senate Republicans dashed any hopes for meaningful congressional action to improve the situation at the border, the GOP-controlled House narrowly impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the border in a 214-213 vote.

For their part, many Republicans have argued that Biden has executive authority to address the migrant crisis using executive authority.

Last week, NBC News reported that the administration is considering taking unilateral action that would make it more difficult for migrants to pass the initial screening process for asylum at the southern border and would quickly deport migrants who recently came to the U.S. who don’t meet the criteria.

Although Trump's administration enforced several strict immigration policies, including using Title 42 to expel more migrants, some of the highest border crossing numbers in years were recorded during his presidency.

In 2019, for example, border crossings by undocumented migrants hit a 12-year high, the Department of Homeland Security said at the time.

US issues Mexico 'increased caution' warning for spring break travelers

by travel planner

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico has issued a spring break travel warning for Americans planning to visit the country. The message posted on Monday highlighted a range of potential safety threats in the popular destination like crime.

“U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark,” the advisory said, though it noted that crime can occur anywhere in Mexico. The U.S. State Department's travel advisory for the country notes various warning levels for different states, ranging from Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions") through 4 (“do not travel”).

The message also warned of other potential hazards like unregulated alcohol and pharmaceuticals. “Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted,” the advisory said.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates noted that counterfeit medication is “common” and could be ineffective or an incorrect strength. Those products may also have dangerous ingredients. “Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments,” the message said.

Why some travelers are skipping the US: 'You guys are not afraid of this?'

The advisory warned of drowning and high private hospital prices, as well, among other risks. The message urged travelers to take precautions like keeping an eye on their drinks; staying with a group of friends in bars and clubs, while walking in dark areas or in taxis at night; and letting family and friends know about their travel plans.

Despite the warning, however, it noted that “the vast majority” of U.S. citizens visiting Mexico at spring break each year do so safely.
