When i saw the name Totally Tubular Festival, i thought it has something to do with the Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. I was wrong!

Musical acts from the '80s who are still playing today

Perhaps no fan base in music history is more loyal than those of the 1980s. Today's middle-aged men and women still can't seem to get enough of reliving the days of tight-rolled jeans, overused hair spray, and music television.

While plenty of bands or artists from that decade are re-forming to make a little money off this retro obsession, other prominent groups from the '80s are still going strong. Not all we'll showcase have enjoyed consistent success throughout the years, but enough to keep packing stadiums, clubs, or festival grounds.

Here's a look at 20 of the better bands and artists of the 1980s who are still successfully doing their thing.

Though the new-wave pop rockers have not released a studio album in more than a decade, The B-52s (formerly the B-52's) have remained visible. Seeing the band that commercially broke out with 1989's Cosmic Thing is still quite the experience , and the band is embarking on a farewell tour in 2022.

Kings of the 1980s hair metal/pop rock scene that rolled well into the 1990s, Jon Bon Jovi and Co. are still a big attraction when out on tour. Though guitarist Richie Sambora has not been part of the band for some time, Bon Jovi has sold more than 100 million records internationally, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 , and released an album in 2020.

Robert Smith and his boys have been around since the late 1970s, and these British goth-alternative rockers were at their best during the '80s with albums like The Head on the Door (1985), Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me  (1987), and Disintegration (1989). However, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers are still quite the draw . It headlined Lollapalooza recently and was one of the main acts at the 2019 Austin City Limits Music Festival. The Cure released the 30th-anniversary version of Wish  in 2022.

Def Leppard

While singer Joe Elliott can no longer hit the high notes like he once did, Def Leppard still draws a packed house when it tours as headliners — even in stadiums, like Wrigley Field in 2018. For decades, the band has overcome adversity on several fronts to keep going, put out new music, and found a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . However, hits off 1983's Pyromania  and commercial pop-rock smash follow-up Hysteria  (1987) are what the fans want to hear live.

Depeche Mode

There are bands that were so big in the 1980s that fans are still devoted to them today and even well-versed in their newest material. Depeche Mode is one of them. The synth-pop, alternative stars made a name for themselves in 1981 with what's become their signature tune "Just Can't Get Enough." More or less, the band has kept active since, though co-founder Andy Fletcher died of an aortic dissection in May 2022.

Duran Duran

There are still middle-aged women around the globe who swoon at the sight of Simon Le Bon and John Taylor, mainly because Duran Duran has never really gone away since its days as MTV staples with early '80s hits "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio." Actually, since its self-titled 1981 debut album, Duran Duran has put out at least one album every decade and remains a popular live act for those 40- and 50-somethings who can't get enough of 1980s pop.

Vince Clark and Andy Bell might be two of the hardest-working musicians in the business. Since forming in 1985, the duo has released nearly 20 studio albums, touring regularly. It doesn't seem fans will ever get tired of hearing classics like "Chains of Love."

The Fixx is maybe not the most memorable band from the 1980s but arguably one of the most underrated from that time.  Reach the Beach from 1983 is the group's most notable album, with pop hits "One Thing Leads to Another" and "Saved by Zero." But The Fixx kept making music through the '90s, into the 2000s, and even this decade. They released the album Every Five Seconds  in June 2022.

Guns N' Roses

It took a while, but Guns N' Roses finally got back together — at least three members of the classic lineup in Axl, Slash and Duff — to tour with the potential of some new music. It can be seen as just one of the biggest acts from the 1980s and early '90s getting together to make some money, but the band is almost constantly touring.

Iron Maiden

Formed in the mid-1970s, Maiden's self-titled debut came out in 1980. Four of metal's all-time classic albums followed with Killers  (1981), The Number of the Beast (1982), Piece of Mind (1983), and Powerslave (1984). For more than 40 years, Iron Maiden has slayed audiences, The 2019 Legacy Of The Beast Tour  was one of the hottest tickets of the year. After releasing Senjutsu , their first album in six years, in September 2021, the band hit the road again in 2022.

Madonna will never go away. Much like the Rolling Stones , she is an iconic figure who has always been larger than the stage and screen she's performed on. Since her self-titled debut album in 1983, fans still wait to see what she'll do next, what she's saying, and, of course, what she's going to wear. She released her 14th studio album in 2019, Madame X , and a documentary concert film by the same name followed in 2021.

Though Metallica's most commercially successful album came out in 1991, the band's true thrash metal foundation was laid in the 1980s with four of the best albums of the genre in Kill 'Em All  (1983), Ride the Lightning (1984), Master of Puppets   (1986), and   ...And Justice for All (1988). The Hall of Famers are still a worldwide attraction and usually have no trouble packing houses. Also, 2016's Hardwired... to Self-Destruct proved the band can still deliver at a high level .

New Kids on the Block

Though Donnie, Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, and Danny have not been completely together since moving teenage girls to tears with '80s boy band classics "You Got It (The Right Stuff) " and "Hangin' Tough," a 2008 reunion gave NKOTB a second wind. Those same young girls from the '80s flocked to stadiums and ballparks as mothers and working professionals to see the Kids. The same formula worked with their 2019 and 2022 MixTape tours. The  New Kids  apparently still have the right stuff.

Though it has not been a smooth road, the journey for 1980s synth-pop, alt-staples New Order continues. Still one of the most beloved bands of the time, Bernard Sumner and his crew are still on the road, put out an album in recent years, and played Lollapalooza in the U.S., Europe, and South America. Fans are more than willing to shell out cash to hear classics like "Blue Monday," Bizarre Love Triangle," and "True Faith."

Ozzy Osbourne

Technically, the Prince of Darkness has been going since the late 1960s when Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham, England, but we're looking at this from his solo career. That began with the classic Blizzard of Ozz (1980) LP and only grew bigger during the '80s. Osbourne, now in his 70s, remains one of the more prominent entertainers on the planet, thanks to his reality show, reunions with Sabbath, and touring. Osbourne returned to performing in August 2022 after undergoing major surgery.

After guiding the Police to super-stardom, Sting has been one of the world's most successful musicians since breaking out on his own with 1985 smash The Dream of the Blue Turtles . A winner of more than 15 Grammy Awards, Sting is an international attraction considered one of the greatest songwriters ever and a Hall of Famer who is showing no signs of slowing down.

One of the more underrated bands of the 1980s, Tesla hit it big with albums such as Mechanical Resonance   (1986) and The Great Radio Controversy  (1988). While its overall commercial success from the '80s and into the '90s has certainly waned, Tesla's musical presence has not. Its most recent record came out in 2019, and the group has been toured on a consistent basis.

Like Madonna, Bon Jovi, and Metallica, U2 is one of the biggest bands in the world. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. have never stopped since the release of 1980's Boy. U2 has released 14 studio albums, and its concerts are still an experience. From a musical standpoint, some might argue that the guys sound just as good — or better — today than they did all those years ago.

“Weird Al” Yankovic

The king of song parodies and the pop accordion, "Weird Al" has been going strong since breaking out with his second studio album, "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D   (1984). While he's built a loyal and dedicated following over the years, almost cult-like, "Weird Al," a multiple-Grammy winner, has also turned on a new generation of fans who appreciate his comedic and musical creativity .

Hard-rockers Whitesnake put out their first album in 1978, but David Coverdale and his revolving cast of members had their greatest commercial success in the 1980s with the bluesy  Slide It In (1984), its pop-metal smash self-titled 1987 release, featuring the MTV classic "Here I Go Again," and 1989's Slip of the Tongue . But in 2019, Coverdale and Co. released the band's 13th studio album.

A Chicago native, Jeff Mezydlo has professionally written about sports, entertainment and pop culture for nearly 30 years. If he could do it again, he'd attend Degrassi Junior High, Ampipe High and Grand Lakes University.

The 44 Most Anticipated Tours of 2024: Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, and More

By Pitchfork

Mitski Burna Boy Olivia Rodrigo and more

It’s looking like a busy year for some of the world’s biggest touring artists, with packed schedules from Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Bad Bunny, Foo Fighters, the Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day, and many more. A few touring institutions, meanwhile, are just wrapping up, from Adele’s time in Las Vegas to Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency and Bob Dylan’s seemingly never-ending Rough and Rowdy Ways trek. Some things, however, just never seem to change: You can expect the Ty Segalls and King Gizzards of the world to feature on these roundups till kingdom come, with reliable indie-rock staples like Destroyer, Wednesday, and Alvvays still out in force fighting for the cause, too.

After a residency that has spanned the best part of a year and brought hundreds of thousands of Adele fans to Las Vegas, the Tottenham superstar is closing the run with dates from January through June. “This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have,” she said in the announcement. “It’s just made me realize how much I really enjoy being on stage, that I’m bloody good at it and that it is 100% where I belong! So let’s go one last time before I turn into a showgirl forever!” –Jazz Monroe

Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette will spend the spring and summer touring North America with noteworthy companions Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The Triple Moon Tour begins in June in Phoenix, Arizona, and wraps up with a final show in Inglewood, California. Morissette and Jett will also be joined by country singer Morgan Wade. –Hattie Lindert

Alanis Morissette: The Triple Moon Tour

Before they play a European festival circuit next summer, Alvvays will head out on a series of U.S. tour dates in spring 2024. Fresh off their first-ever Grammy nomination (a Best Alternative Music Performance nod for their song “Belinda Says”), Alvvays are hitting venues across the country and ending the run in May in Tucson, Arizona. –Hattie Lindert

Alvvays: US Spring Tour 2024

Turns out 2022’s El Último Tour del Mundo wasn’t actually Bad Bunny’s last world tour. The Puerto Rican superstar is back on the road for the 47-date Most Wanted North American tour, in support of his October 2023 album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana . The run begins in February and concludes in May with three back-to-back nights in Miami. –Hattie Lindert

Bad Bunny: Most Wanted Tour

Belle and Sebastian

Right at the top of 2023, Belle and Sebastian shared a surprise album: Late Developers presented an array of playful indie-pop, and a companion of sorts to the previous year’s A Bit of Previous . The band was due to tour shortly after the record’s release but canceled when bandleader Stuart Murdoch ran into health issues ; the rescheduled dates take place in the spring. In the meantime, Murdoch announced a memoirish novel and the band appeared on The Simpsons . –Jazz Monroe

Belle and Sebastian: North American Tour Spring 2024

This year marks the end of Billy Joel’s storied Madison Square Garden residency: the New York staple is set to retire his franchise with the venue after his 150th show in July. Since announcing the series in 2013, Joel has kept it a steady engagement, only taking off 18 months for the pandemic. While the residency is coming to a close, Joel does not yet plan to retire. –Hattie Lindert

His band, Bleachers, is releasing a self-titled album, and he’s also producing the soundtrack for Apple TV+’s The New Look . With all that, he and Bleachers are also going on the From Studio to the Stage Tour with Samia as an opener. –Hattie Lindert

In support of For All the Dogs and the subsequent Scary Hours Edition , Drake has expanded the tour with a series of 2024 dates featuring Cole. The new leg of the tour—subtitled Big as the What?—begins later this month in Denver. –Hattie Lindert

Fall Out Boy & Jimmy Eat World

Unofficially inspired to recreate the Predator handshake meme but for two different generations of emo-gone-pop-punk, Fall Out Boy and Jimmy Eat World are joining forces this spring for a 23-date tour of the United States, with the former headlining and the latter opening. Dubbed the So Much for (2our) Dust , it begins in Portland, Oregon, on February 28 and stretches on through to April 6, where the trek ends in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both bands will also reunite in the fall for the Las Vegas music festival When We Were Young. If it’s anything like the first run of Fall Out Boy’s tour in support of their new album, So Much (for) Stardust , then fans can expect a thrilling career-spanning setlist that rotates in a few new songs each night. –Nina Corcoran

Jane Remover will co-headline the Designated Dreams Tour with her DeadAir labelmate Quannic. –Hattie Lindert

After being hospitalized for a severe bacterial infection last year, Madonna made a full recovery, in a turn she has referred to as “ a fucking miracle .” As a result, the pop legend finally kicked off the initial leg of her rescheduled Celebration Tour in October. After a stretch of dates in England and Europe, Madonna has already brought her career-spanning show to North America, where she will continue with dates in Toronto, Detroit, Montreal, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Las Vegas, Inglewood, Houston, Miami, and more until spring. She’ll wrap things up with a batch of concerts in Mexico City, ending on April 24. –Madison Bloom

The riotous Welsh rock band Mclusky, who last toured North America in 2004, were primed for a cross-Atlantic comeback run until disaster struck: bandleader Andrew “Falco” Falkous found himself working through a debilitating bout of tinnitus and other inner-ear problems. After some recuperation and with hearing protection in tow, Falkous and the band are due to make good on their return in March. The group shared a double A-side, “ Unpopular Parts of a Pig / The Digger You Deep ,” in September, as a high-spirited preview of a forthcoming full-length. –Allison Hussey

The crowd who spent a mid-July weekend watching Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, and more perform for free in Brooklyn at MIKE’s Young World festival got a front-row seat to the rapper’s caring curation and accessible live experience. The Somebody Fine Me Trouble tour begins in Europe in February, before kicking off a U.S. leg in Philadelphia in April. He’ll close things out with a hometown show at New York’s Webster Hall. –Hattie Lindert

She may not be an outspoken artist online, but, behind the scenes, Mitski is making every word count. While TikTok was busy fawning over “ My Love Mine All Mine ,” Mitski was putting in the work to find a music venue that offers fair merch rates while still booking a place big enough to house her sizable fandom at each stop. The result of her efforts is a North American tour with multiple nights at theaters around the country in support of The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We . Joining her along the way are openers Tamino, Sunny War, Julia Jacklin, and Sarah Kinsley. –Nina Corcoran

If you do, their upcoming dates from late April to mid-July have you covered. Among their plans is also a headlining spot at this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Will any special guests show up at these shows? Who knows, but the band did play a surprise release show with Lady Gaga last year, so anything can happen. –Evan Minsker

Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and drummer Tom Skinner are in a groove as the Smile and show no signs of slowing down. Wall of Eyes , their follow-up to 2022 debut A Light for Attracting Attention , will come out on January 26. A little over a month later, the Smile will bring those songs to life for a short European tour . Beginning in Dublin, Ireland, on March 7 and ending in London, England, on March 23, the run is only nine dates long. Who knows, maybe Paul Thomas Anderson will fly himself out to watch as a little treat for directing the “ Wall of Eyes ” music video. –Nina Corcoran

Stephen and David Dewaele are rebooting Soulwax in 2024 for the duo’s first tour in five years. Taylor Swift

The hottest concert ticket of 2023—subject of the biggest concert film of all time—continues its reign throughout 2024. Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is crisscrossing the globe. It’s Japan and Australia in February, Singapore in March, and then Europe and the United Kingdom from May to August. The shows return to North America in October and November with multiple dates in Miami Gardens, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Toronto. Tool haven’t released new music since 2019’s Fear Inoculum , but they’ve remained busy on the road. Following headlining and festival dates last year, the band has stadium and arena shows in January and February. Wondering what wild outfit Maynard James Keenan will wear this time? Will it be a blonde wig, red lipstick, and prosthetic breasts? A leather jumpsuit and a wild mohawk? Might as well go to one of these shows and find out. –Evan Minsker and Matthew Ismael Ruiz

With her new album, What an Enormous Room , out January 26, Mackenzie Scott is spending January to April on the road. Torres starts the year with January dates across the United States with Aisha Burns. One can never be sure exactly what to expect from a Ty Segall show, especially here in the post–Freedom Band era. His sets can be electric and wild, acoustic and intimate, maybe a bit psychedelic. With his 2024 dates behind the new album Three Bells , you can likely expect him to lean into his prog rock impulses. After some West Coast dates in February, he’s heading across North America in April and May. –Evan Minsker

Tyler Childers

Kentucky’s Tyler Childers is a real champion of country music, honoring its history while expanding the genre’s palette and challenging the dominant attitudes of the industry’s principal players. Soon, he will play some of the biggest venues of his career on his Mule Pull Tour, including New York’s Madison Square Garden and Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Hayes Carll, 49 Winchester, Sylvan Esso, and Allison Russell will join Childers at different stops of the U.S. run. –Allison Hussey

During a Super Bowl musically dominated by the long-awaited return of Rihanna, U2 shared a commercial featuring a baby’s face in an orb. That mystical child heralded the band’s Las Vegas shows, where they’ve performed their 1991 album, Achtung Baby , from September into the first months of 2024. U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere marked the opening of the MSG Sphere at the Venetian, which seats 17,500. With Larry Mullen Jr. taking time away from the band to recover from surgery, Bram van den Berg is playing drums at the shows. In a statement accompanying the announcement, the Edge used the phrase “the beauty of the Sphere” (speaking of the venue and not the baby from the Super Bowl spot). –Evan Minsker

Wednesday—whose singer, Karly Hartzmann, has openly chronicled the hurdles for indie bands to break even on tour—take to the road again in early 2024, still revving the gas behind their shaggy triumph Rat Saw God . In October, Wednesday shared a deeper peek at their lives together with the half-hour documentary Rat Bastards of Haw Creek , directed by their longtime friend Zach Romeo. They’ll begin in their native North Carolina in January, playing dates with Hotline TNT and They Hate Change through the next month, followed by another springtime leg with Draag in the western half of the United States. –Allison Hussey

All-Star ’80s King Crimson Tribute Band (ft. Danny Carey, Steve Vai + Classic Members) Announce 2024 Tour

Former King Crimson bandmates Adrian Belew and Tony Levin will celebrate the band's '80s-era renaissance during a series of all-star North American dates with Steve Vai and Tool 's  Danny Carey .

Simply dubbed "Beat," the band will present music from 1981's Discipline , 1982's Beat and 1984's Three of a Perfect Pair . Their tour begins in San Jose, California, then makes stops in Los Angeles, San Diego, Toronto, Dallas, New York and Boston before wrapping in Las Vegas.

General pre-sale tickets go on sale beginning Friday, April 5, at www.BEAT-tour.com . Both meet-and-greet and VIP tour packages will also be available. A complete list of Beat tour stops is below.

Belew and Levin were invited to join King Crimson in 1981 and remained in the lineup until Robert Fripp put the group on hiatus again in 1984. They were also part of the next iteration from 1994 to 2008. Levin continued thereafter until what appears to be King Crimson's final tour in 2021. Fripp has given his blessing to this new project.

"I went back to Robert and said, 'Here's what I've got,'" Belew tells UCR . "We talked about a lot of things. He had a lot of questions but he said, 'What are you thinking of calling it?' The producers had made up a name which had my name in it – which I didn’t like that much because I didn't feel it represented the whole band, but I told Robert anyway. They wanted to call it Crimson Belew. He said, 'Hmmm, oh.' I could tell he was balking. I said, 'Well, I don't really like it either. I'm not happy with that, but what would you call it?'"

READ MORE:  What's the Difference Between Technical + Progressive Styles of Metal?

Fripp considered things for a moment, then said, "'You know, I've always used the term 'Discipline' for all of my business and everything for years now. For 13 years, you and Tony and Pat Mastelotto have had your band camp and you guys called that 'Three of a Perfect Pair.' Why don't you call it 'Beat,'" Belew remembered with a laugh. "I said, 'Will that get your support?' He said, 'Yeah, you have my support and blessing.'"

Adrian Belew and Steve Vai Have a Frank Zappa Connection

Like Belew, Steve Vai is a former guitarist with Frank Zappa . He has toured and recorded with David Lee Roth , Whitesnake , Alice Cooper , Motorhead and, most recently, Joe Satriani . "Robert Fripp is one of our historical geniuses," Vai said in an official statement. "His highly specific and exceptionally brilliant guitar technique is studied and revered. His contribution to the quality of my musical life, and so many others is supreme."

Carey is Tool 's co-founding drummer, and has also worked with Carole King and the Melvins . He also appeared on Belew's 2005 album Side One . "Revisiting some of my favorite music is a treat in itself," Levin added, "but in company of this stellar lineup, I expect to have my musical butt kicked."

There was an initial schism when Fripp decided to jumpstart King Crimson without Belew in 2013, but they mended fences a few years later.

Eighties One-Hit Wonders Unite For Lost 80’s Live Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

If you’re a one-hit wonder, two-hit wonder or even three-hit wonder from the 1980s , the road can be a tough place in 2019. You can try to eke out a living playing clubs, fairs and remote casinos, but profits are slim once you pay for things like gas, food and hotel rooms and your day-to-day existence can be quite dispiriting.

But as the fine people behind the Lost 80’s Live tour have learned, there is incredible strength in numbers. Every year, they throw together a bill stacked with Eighties bands and suddenly groups like Wang Chung and The Escape Club find themselves playing venues like the Greek Theater along with a number of classy casinos, the kind that have buffets where it’s actually safe to eat the shellfish.

Organizers just rolled out details for the 2019 edition of Lost 80s Live and the bill features Missing Persons, The Motels, John Parr, The Vapors, Real Life, The Escape Club and A Flock of Seagulls . That means it will be possible to hear “Wild Wild West,” “Turning Japanese,” “I Ran,” Send Me an Angel,” ‘St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Only The Lonely” all in a single show. And don’t worry: None of the bands play for very long, meaning you won’t have to be subjected to their boring non-hits or, God forbid, an actual new song.

The bill varies a bit from show to show, but they promise that A Flock of Seagulls, FARRINGTON AND MANN, original members of When In Rome UK, Boys Don’t Cry, The Vapors, Real Life, & John Parr will be at every show. A handful of concerts will also have Bow Wow Wow and Wang Chung on the bill. We’d all love to Wang Chung every single night, but apparently they’re only able to do it on select occasions.

Love 80’s Live Tour Dates

August 2 – Coney Island, NY @ The Ford Amphitheatre August 3 – Peachtree, GA @ The Fredrick Brown, Jr Amphitheatre (The Fred) August 9 – Detroit, MI @ Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre August 10 – Denver, CO @ Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre August 17 – San Diego, CA @ Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay August 22 – Houston, TX @ The Arena Theatre August 23 – Lake Charles, LA @ Golden Nugget Lake Charles Hotel and Casino August 24 – Grand Prairie, TX @ The Theatre at Grand Prairie August 30 – Santa Ynez, CA @Chumash Casino Resort August 31 – Saratoga, CA @ The Mountain Winery September 1 – Lincoln, CA @ Thunder Valley Casino – Outside Amphitheatre September 6 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Greek Theatre September 7 – Las Vegas, NV @ The Downtown Las Vegas Event Center

Norwegian cruise has been ‘silent’ since abandoning elderly woman who suffered stroke, family says.

The son-in-law of an 80-year-old cruise passenger who suffered a stroke on a Norwegian Cruise Line-sponsored tour of an African island and was left to find her way back to the US has slammed the company for failing to take responsibility for “completely” abandoning the elderly woman — or return any of his or his wife’s many calls.

“Norwegian’s been silent,” Kurt Gies told The Post on Wednesday, rebutting the cruise line’s claims that its crew supported his mother-in-law, Julie Lankoff, and instead “completely abandoned this person in need.”

Gies said he and his wife, Lana, became concerned about his mother-in-law when they noticed that an Apple AirTag they had been using to track her was still on the island of São Tomé and Principe even though the ship had departed for its next stop.

Julie Lenkoff, 80, is pictured after she got out of the hospital in São Tomé.

He said they tried to call the cruise line 15 different times over the course of two days, but they didn’t receive a response.

Fortunately, in the meantime, Lenkoff was able to connect with eight other passengers who were left behind from the same cruise when their private tour ran late.

The other passengers were able to call the Gieses to let them know they were with her.

Gies said it was only then that they found out that Lenkoff — who saved up about $20,000 for her “big dream trip” on the cruise around Africa — collapsed while on a tour of the island.

She experienced “numbness and weakness” across her right side, and when she came to, Gies said, she could not speak English and was only communicating in French.

Julie Lenkoff is pictured.

Lenkoff was transported to a local hospital, but was discharged just 24 hours later, at which point the vessel had left without her.

She had no way to get back on the ship or join her family back in the US because she had left her credit cards back on the vessel as cruise ship personnel had suggested, Gies explained.

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.

He also denied Norwegian’s claims that its medical team had assessed Lenkoff before the ship docked at São Tomé and Principe.

In its statement, Norwegian claimed its policy is to “contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent.”

Lenkoff is pictured.

“We attempted to call the guest several times, and as we were unable to reach her, we worked directly with our port agents in São Tomé and Principe, an African island nation, to receive updates about the guest,” the cruise line claimed.

The group took care of Lenkoff for three days, Gies said, but had planned to meet back up with the ship when it was scheduled to dock in Gambia on Easter Sunday.

The Gieses then arranged for Lenkoff to fly from Africa to Portugal, from Portugal to Toronto, Canada, and from Canada to San Francisco.

Jay Campbell was seen escorting Lenkoff through the streets of the Central African island.

They wanted to get her first-class tickets to ensure she remained comfortable because they still did not know what her condition was — but the flight to Lisbon was out of first-class tickets.

“We were very concerned,” Gies said, claiming there “could have potentially been catastrophic consequences.”

But Lenkoff was able to make it home on Sunday, and is recovering at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif., where Gies said she suffered an additional stroke.

Lenkoff is pictured with her family.

“She knows she’s in peril,” Gies said of his mother-in-law, who he said is “normally very independent.”

Doctors now say it appears she suffered a “significant stroke and potential heart attack” during the trip.

Gies claimed that his mother-in-law was in good health before the trip, having recently recovered from COVID.

“She just wanted to experience the world,” he said, noting that he and his wife are “eternally indebted and grateful” to the Campbells.

“They have become part of our family and I’ve never met them.”
