Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Guide

A beautiful temple complex near Damnoen Saduak

Thailand is a fascinating country filled with historical wonders, gorgeous temples, fantastic food, friendly people and a lot of culture! It also holds the famous Damnoen Saduak floating market .

In July 2017, I traveled to Thailand, where I was immersed in some of the most unforgettable adventures I’ve participated in and visited the most beautiful sites that are authentic and sacred to Thai culture, such as the Damnoen Saduak floating market.

During my two weeks in Thailand , I traveled with a group where we visited the cities of Bangkok , Damnoen Saduak, Phitsanulok , Chiang Mai and the island of Koh Samet .

In this blog post, discover everything you must see and do when you visit the Damnoen Saduak floating market, including the Damnoen Saduak floating market entrance fee and opening hours. This is a market Bangkok visitors should add to their itinerary.

How to Get Around Thailand & How to Get to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

A cute meerkat monkey at the Damnoen Saduak floating market

Since I did a group tour to Thailand, all my flights and hotels were handled beforehand. I recommend you set your desired travel dates into Skyscanne r and wait to see when the prices are low enough to purchase.

I flew from Newark Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok with a 3-hour layover in Hong Kong. It took us 16 hours to get from Newark to Hong Kong and another 2.5 – 3 hour flight to Bangkok.

It is easy to get around Thailand . Since I was with a group, we traveled around via private coach, but the country is filled with railroads.

Most locals recommend you travel via train as it offers a safer and more comforting experience. Other ways to get around are by taking the bus, ferry, local transportation or renting a car . Click here to discover the best ways to travel around Thailand.

To get to the Damnoen Saduak floating market, you can take a bus tour or hire a car to take you. Many tours and car hires offer hotel pickup and a full refund if the tour does not happen for whatever reason.

If tours aren’t your thing and you want to avoid hiring a private car, you can also take the BTS Skytrain ( Bang Wa station) and public bus (bus 78 from Sai Tai Mai to Damnoen Saduak).

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Tips

Damnoen saduak floating market opening hours.

The market opens early in the morning at 7 a.m. It stays open until the evening. Most tour buses arrive between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., the busiest time to visit the market. However, there are usually more vendors at the market during this time since they can make extra money when there are more tourists.

If you want to avoid the crowds, try arriving closer to noon or in the afternoon after most tour buses have left for the day.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Entrance Fee

Vendors at the Damnoen Saduak floating market

There is no Damnoen Saduak floating market entrance fee. It is free to enter the floating market and walk around.

However, if you want to take a floating market tour by boat, there is a fee. Expect to pay 400 baht per person or 2000 baht for paddle boat rides with up to 6 people for a one-hour tour.

Make sure to hire the boat once you are at the market. Don’t fall for the overpriced ones outside the market that tell you you have to take one to reach the market.

What to Expect at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak floating market. The largest floating marketing in Thailand.

The world-famous Thai floating market in Damnoen Saduak is known for its unique qualities (similar to the Maeklong Railway Market and Amphawa Floating Market you can see in Bangkok).

When we arrived, we hopped onboard a long-tail speedboat that took us through the jungle and into the canals of the world’s largest floating market. We had a blast cruising through the water but freaked out when we were told to keep our hands in the boat because of the anacondas and crocodiles living in the channels. Even though the boat was going fast, it was so low to the water that anything could’ve jumped out!

It was a fun experience and we had a lot of great laughs. We passed traditional Thai houses and natural jungles with a shrine or gold Buddha. We also saw tropical birds flying through the trees.

The floating market at Damnoen Saduak

At the Damnoen Saduak floating market, you can purchase gifts straight from other long tail boats or ask your driver to pull up to a vendor you want to shop at. It is an excellent and authentic concept! We could also park our boats and walk around the market.

The elephant is the sacred and royal symbol for Thailand and elephant harem pants are the “official uniform” for women and men traveling through Southeast Asia. These beautifully patterned pants are worn loosely and make for a Bohemian look.

Since there are strict dress codes for many of the temples and palaces in Thailand, elephant pants work perfectly. They are even light enough for the humid Thai weather on the mainland and the ocean breeze on the islands. In the United States, you can purchase elephant pants online at The Elephant Temple while donating money to save the elephants.

At the floating markets and all of the other markets in Thailand, you can find a pair of pants for all shapes and sizes. In addition, you can even purchase elephant shorts, dresses, skirts, rompers, jumpsuits, shirts and more!

In addition to elephant pants, you can purchase elephant figurines, key chains, coffee mugs, jewelry, paintings, handcrafted household items, purses and wooden knives.

One thing to remember when you visit the floating market in Thailand is that you are falling into a tourist trap. All the items sold are much more expensive than if you were to buy them at a smaller market in a different city. You can, however, test your negotiation skills with the vendors selling items since they never want to miss out on a sale.

The food sold at the floating market is also excellent! The mango sticky rice is a must-try. You can purchase coconut ice cream, barbecue chicken, coconut and banana pancakes (pictured below), green tea chips, and fresh fruit such as pineapple, bananas, dragon fruit, purple mangosteen, durian, and mango.

Coconut and banana pancakes at the Thai floating market

The fruit in Thailand is fresh and so delicious. I ate it with almost every meal during my two weeks there.

The Damnoen Saduak floating market is enormous. You can find almost everything there! It was one of the most memorable experiences during my time in Thailand.

What to Do Near the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Thai floating markets in Damnoen Saduak

If you visit the Damnoen Saduak floating market, there are other hotspots to enjoy on the way.

Visit the Salt Fields

On our way to the Damnoen Saduak floating market, we passed land resembling typical rice paddies. I was informed that they were salt fields instead! One of the cool things I learned was that most of the salts we use for cooking come from these fields outside of the Bangkok area!

Salt fields in Thailand outside of Bangkok

It usually takes around one month to produce the salt. As you probably have wondered, making salt takes a lot of hard work and effort.

The prepared fields are manually flooded with water from the Gulf of Thailand and are left to dry naturally in the sun. The salt is piled, cleaned and bagged for sale when the water evaporates. How awesome is that?

Coconut Sugar Farm

A coconut sugar farm near Damnoen Saduak

Coconut is a popular fruit in Southeast Asia, and they come from a coconut flowering tree that looks like a regular palm tree. Coconut sugar is also found on this tropical farm. It is a popular and healthy alternative to the traditional white sugar we are used to baking in the United States.

Just like salt, the process of making sugar requires a lot of hard work and manual labor. The sap from the coconut trees is collected and placed into a basket. They are then poured into hard metal pans so the tree sap can boil into a caramel-like texture. Once the sap becomes hard, it then crystallizes and is ready to be used for cooking.

A woman at a coconut sugar farm in Thailand

I had a blast helping mix the sap! However, I give the owners and workers at Coconut Sugar Farm a lot of credit because my arms quickly tired out after a few minutes of mixing the sap.

Afterward, I was able to cool off with a refreshing and tasty coconut! I was thrilled as this was my first time ever drinking out of a natural coconut. Once I finished, I couldn’t help but eat all the coconut cream left over. The farm had hammocks and rocking chairs to lounge, relax and enjoy the delicious fruits.

Phra Pathom Chedi

Wat Phra Pathom Chedi in Thailand

During our time at Phra Pathom Chedi , we got to witness several religious ceremonies with Buddhist monks. We even got to walk around and explore the many other golden shrines and intricate architecture.

We ended our tour of Phra Pathom Chedi by exploring the small caves and surrounding area. Visiting this historical and sacred site was a great way of ending our time in Bangkok.

It totally was Maria! This floating market was touristy too, but definitely a cool experience. 🙂

What a fun experience!! This is right up my alley – and I love it because it’s not the typical ~touristy~ thing to do (although I love doing those things too!!). I can’t wait to go to Thailand – everyone who has been absolutely loves it! I use coconut sugar so it would be really neat to see the process of how they make it!

Thank you Sarah and yes, this is definitely a MUST visit place when you go to Thailand. It’s not too far from Bangkok and such a cool experience. 🙂

You are going to love Thailand when you eventually go! It’s such a fascinating country! 🙂

Aww, it´s such a long time that I´ve been to Thailand myself. also with a group tour. It was fun and convenient, but also, I realized that in group tours there are too many people around and I need some space for myself that is not always possible when you´re with a group. I would love to visit Thailand one more time, but this time, all by myself. Your guide is great!

Yes, I totally agree! I also did Japan with a group tour and feel the need to have to go back on my own. I love the idea of group tours, but you’re truly not getting the full experience to yourself. Also thank you Pia! 🙂

This place looks so gorgeous! I can’t wait to get back travelling and finally make it to Thailand!

It really was Ella! I loved Thailand. 🙂

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: Review & Guide

Bangkok floating markets are some of the most popular tourist spots in Thailand. The floating market is a traditional way of marketing in Thailand, due to the number of canals in its cities. While most of the floating markets open only on weekends, the touristy Damnoen Saduak Floating Market opens daily.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market , certainly the most famous floating market around the city of Bangkok , is located in Ratchaburi province, about 105 km southwest of Bangkok. This floating market is very tourist focused so the feel here is less authentic than you could experience in some other floating markets around Bangkok.

In this article, we will share our experience of going to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market at low cost and avoiding scams that might be experienced on the way.

If you're not sure about the best area to stay for sightseeing around Thai capital city, check out these recommendations for the best areas of Bangkok .

History of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Between 1866 and 1868, by the order of King Rama IV, the Damnoen Saduak Canal was built to support transportation and trade. The canal was 32 kilometers long, had more than 200 branches and was connecting the Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers. It took more than 2 years to dig the canal, and finally it was completed under the successor government of King Rama V.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market became popular in 1971-1973 when the river was filled with farmers on boats selling their agricultural products. The main floating market was called Lad Plee and that is how trade is carried out in this area to this day. When the development of the road network replaced the need for waterway transport, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market has become a semi-land market.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market visit without a tour

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located about 100 kilometers from Bangkok, so getting there by yourself can be an adventure and you should prepare yourself beforehand. Our itinerary of getting to Damnoen Saduak from Bangkok without a tour might help you plan your trip there better.

7:00 Victory Monument in Bangkok

We’ve started the trip to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from the Victory Monument as we were staying in the area. When planning a trip to the floating market, make sure to get up early as it will give you time to visit the market and return to Bangkok in the afternoon.

Buses to Damnoen Saduak leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (or Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal ), which is not connected with the city by BTS  or MRT , so we took the Bangkok public bus   No. 515 that goes from Victory Monument to Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal.

7:40 Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal

We arrived at Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal . We went to the ticket office in the terminal building to buy tickets for Damnoen Saduak bus but the office of that company was closed. The seller told us to buy minivan ticket instead so we got out from the terminal building to the minivan platform and bought our tickets for minivan No. 996 that is going from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal to Damnoen Saduak while passing some other popular spots in the area on the way.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The minivan tickets for a trip from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market cost 80 THB per person.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The minivans to Damnoen Saduak run between 6:00 and 22:00 and leave every 40 minutes.

Our minivan was supposed to leave at 8:20. The minivan departed exactly on time and was full of local people. During the journey the driver stopped several times to drop someone or refuel.

10:30 Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The journey from Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market took about two hours and the minivan dropped us at a square where the departure station for the boats was set up.

A couple of insistent tour vendors immediately came forward and wanted to take us on the boat by proposing the tour at 2,000-7,000 THB per person. They even tried to dump us by saying that renting a boat is the only way for getting to the market. SCAM!! Avoid this!

We told them that we were not going to take a boat so they let us go on our way. We have done some research before going to the floating market and the experiences seem to be no different. You can expect to face this.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

In fact, you are dropped of just about 1 km from the floating market. You can take a motorbike taxi for 10-20 THB or just walk for about 10 minutes to arrive at the heart of the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

Along the way to the floating market, there are many boat hiring places but it is better to avoid them all and walk straight to the market. There you will find other boats that can be hired at a fair price.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The popular view of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from the bridge. This picture probably doesn't have to be very descriptive.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

It is possible to visit the market both on foot and by boat. We recommend doing it in both ways. You can take a walk along the banks of the canal.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

There are few local farmers selling a wide variety of fruits and vegetables but most of the stalls on the sides of the canal sell the typical products intended for tourists. There are handicraft stalls selling vases, lamps, fabrics, wooden objects to buy as a gift from Thailand . Souvenirs here are sold at inflated prices and you can find them all being sold in the center of Bangkok.

If you are expecting to see boats of local people selling or exchanging products with other Thais, you will be disappointed. Of course, you will see many boats of locals selling some cooked food, fruits, and crafts, but mainly to tourists as the majority of people visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market are tourists while locals prefer other floating markets around Bangkok.

Before getting into the boat, we crossed the wooden bridge to the pier to sit on the bench where you can order food from the boats. We’ve ordered Thai-Style Fried Mussels (Hoy Tod) that cost 50 THB for Thais and 70 THB for foreign tourists. The Fried Mussels were good enough but different prices applied to Thai people and foreigners at the floating market leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

For a dessert, the sticky rice with mango is quite tasty. You can also try walking straight to the end of the market where stalls selling fresh and delicious coconut milk can be found.

After exploring the market, you can rent a boat, which is the best way to experience this local tradition firsthand. It's fun to take a boat down the narrow canals (called Khlongs in Thai) especially on the secondary channels that can only be visited by boat.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

All you need to do is dealing with the boat price. Normally there are 2 types of boats and whatever price they offer, keep in mind that the price for foreign tourists should be as follows (and if you go with local, it should be much cheaper):

Row Boat : For the persons who prefer the traditional atmosphere, limited for 4-5 passengers:

  • 300-500 THB/one boat for 40 minutes
  • 400-600 THB/one boat for 1 hour

Motorboat : For the persons requiring greater distance and speed, limited for 6-8 passengers:

  • 400-700 THB/one boat for 40 minutes
  • 600-1,000 THB/one boat for 1 hour
  • 1,200-1,500 THB/one boat for 2 hours

In our opinion, the rowing boat is the best option because it is quieter and environment friendly. The market is so small that you do not need an engine and one hour is enough to explore it. The stalls where you can rent a boat at an affordable price can be found next to the main bridge.

Before boarding a rowing boat, make sure to ask where exactly you will be taken. Most boats will bring you to see the orchards and the process of sugar palm making. However, some only take you to the souvenir shop with a sign saying "Sugar Palm Farm".

While rowing, you can look at the houses and lives of the Thai people along the waterfront. Several times our boat docked to souvenir sellers. And many times, it was also stopped by food vendors who cook on their own boats. The boat drove fast, occasionally the boat passed each other or intersected with other boats most of which also carried tourists. The canal waters were not exactly clean but there was no garbage. If you come to the market early enough (around 8:00-9:00), you will be able to visit it calmly crossing all the channels. Apart from that, expect jams of tourist boats in the main channel.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

How to get there

By half day / full day tour.

You have several options for getting to the floating market, but the most worry free is joining an excursion that takes you to the market. Visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is one of the most popular day trips in Bangkok as it is a suitable way for those of you who don't want the hassle of arranging schedules and budgets.

If you’ll decide go to the floating market with the tour, you need to check if the boat trip of the market is included in the total price of the tour or not. We advise you to first take a look online, to get an idea of prices and people's opinions about the tour to avoid being cheat. Basically, they all offer more or less the same, which includes transportation sharing (in the form of a minibus), boat rental, and a tour guide during the trip. However, you can save some money if you have the patience to research a few.

Some of the popular tours are as follows:

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Half Day Tour

Bangkok Floating Markets Tour: Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa Markets

Bangkok Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Grand Palace Half Day Trip

If you choose the bus, expect to spend almost the whole day for visiting the floating market. The air-conditioned bus No. 78 departs from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal to Damnoen Saduak. This bus only costs 64 THB. The bus departure is scheduled every 40 minutes, and at the earliest it departs at 06:00. From the drop-off point, you still have to walk or take a motorbike for approximately 1 km to get to the market.

In addition, you can travel with buses on other routes such as Bangkok - Ratchaburi, Bangkok - Phetchaburi and get off at Bang Phae intersection . After that, you can walk or take motorbike which runs between the Bang Phae intersection and Damnoen Saduak.

The journey takes about 2 hours, not to mention the congestion in Bangkok. Therefore, it is highly recommended to leave early in the morning.

The minivan No. 996 also departs from Bangko Southern Bus Terminal. The minivan passes Mae Klong Market and Amphawa Floating Market before reaching Damnoen Saduak. As it was mentioned above, the minivan will park at the boat hiring place so be preparing for that.

To take the minivan back, you can wait for it in front of Damnoen Saduak Hospital.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

If you don't want to bother waiting for a bus or minivan, you can use the taxi services available in Bangkok for the trip to be more comfortable. You can expect to pay around 600-1,000 THB for the trip to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok. Considering that the market is an hour and a half drive from the center of Bangkok and the taxi can fit 3-4 people, it's not bad.

You should expect that when you reach the Damnoen Saduak area, you will be offered several boat trips to the market. So, it's important to get a reliable and honest driver not to get cheated at the boat hiring place or be stopped by at the souvenir shop.

Opening Hours

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market opening hours are in the morning, from 7:00 to 12:00 approximately. The market opens every day of the year. Our recommendation is going there as early as possible to try to avoid the crowds of tourists.

Our personal experience

We were not very impressed with the trip to this floating market as beforehand we’ve visited all other floating markets around Bangkok and came to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market just to see how it looks like and to share our experience. When you get familiar with other places, this floating market hardly has any charm and it feels just a real tourist trap if compared to other Bangkok floating markets as everything here is overpriced.

The worst part of the trip was that the minivan driver decided to participate in the scam by dropping us off at parking section where the scammers were waiting.

It’s an experience we would not recommend unless you want to take some photos of the floating market, or if you’re first-time traveler to Thailand and only weekdays are included in your stay in Bangkok. Otherwise, it better to visit other authentic Floating Markets in Bangkok .

Be careful if you bring valuable objects, because the market activity is quite high with boats of traders and buyers going back and forth endlessly.

It’s better not to shop here for goods that you can find in the center of Bangkok because prices at the floating market are higher.

If you have more time, take the opportunity to combine a visit to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market with the nearby traditional markets, Amphawa Floating Market  and Maeklong Railway Market .

Chatuchak Weekend Market, located in the heart of Bangkok, is one of the biggest and most popular markets in the world. This market stuns visitors with their amazing bargains.

If you’re into retail therapy, you will definitely love exploring every inch of this market, especially with its easy-to-navigate layout. Boasting 27 sections, you can find bargains, unique items, and delicious food while exploring the maze of alleys and sections. For instance, section 19 is perfect for fashionistas, while section 26 is best for foodies.

The market attracts over 200,000 visitors every weekend who enjoy the lively atmosphere and the variety of goods, making it so diverse.

Chatuchak Weekend Market Opening Hours & Location

Located at 587, 10 Kamphaeng Phet 2 Rd, Khwaeng Chatuchak, Khet Chatuchak, Chatuchak Weekend Market is easily accessible. Despite the name, Chatuchak Weekend Market is also open on weekdays. However, the weekday items sold are limited to certain categories only.

You can visit this market on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 am to 6 pm to explore the plant section. There are tropical plants, succulents, cacti, orchids, and even bonsai trees.

Meanwhile, Friday is the best day for those visiting to buy in bulk, as the market only opens for wholesale from 6 pm - 12 pm. This day is especially beneficial for resellers or people who need something in a lot of numbers.

The main days are Saturday and Sunday when the whole market opens from 9 am to 6 pm. This is where the market is flooded by thousands of visitors who want to experience the lively Bangkok market—and maybe grab home several memorabilia!

How to Get to Chatuchak Weekend Market

damnoen saduak floating market tour price

There are several options to get to the market, including skytrain, taxi, MRT, tuktuk, and bus.

1. BTS Skytrain

The BTS Skytrain runs throughout Bangkok. You can drop off at (N8) Mo Chit Station (Sukhumvit Line) and take exit no. 1 to leave the station. From the exit gate, you can just follow the crowds and will eventually stumble upon a small entrance where the market’s clothing section is located.

Taking a taxi is the most convenient way to go to the market if you don’t want the hassle of thinking about the route. Make sure you say your destination clearly to the driver, and they will take you there. Before taking the taxi, you can go by the metre or barter for a fixed price. Also, it is recommended that you give them a tip!

Staying outside Siam and on a budget? Take the MRT instead—it’s only 40 Baht for adults and 20 Baht for children. Get on the one central line for the MRT and drop off by Chatuchak Park. From the park, you can walk to the market’s Entrance 2.

Tuktuk, or a motorcycle with a small carriage attached, is the best option if you want to experience Bangkok to the fullest. From 100-350 Baht, you can get around Bangkok and stop by the market.

This is by far the cheapest option on the list—it only costs 20 Baht! It is especially great if you go from Khao San Road, as no BTS Skytrain or MRT is nearby. Bangkok buses run from 5 am to 11 pm daily. Remember to take bus number 3 or 524 to go to the market.

You will be guided on the boats throughout the vendors in the market’s canal. From there, you can look around at the sides in case anything sparks your eyes. If you want to buy something, the boat will stop for a while until you receive your purchase.

One of the market's highlights is its various food choices, especially authentic Thai cuisine, from street food to fresh fruits and vegetables. To get the best value for money, try negotiating with the sellers.

To get the best out of your “floating” experience here, visit early in the morning or afternoon to avoid crowds and hot weather. This way, you’ll be more convenient in exploring the market.

2. Relax at the Chatuchak Park

Want to get some fresh air instead? Visit Chatuchak Park, located just a 6-minute walk from the Chatuchak Weekend Market. This free-entry park is a verdant recreational space with jogging and cycling paths, flower beds, and a big pond.

If you’re visiting Bangkok with your family, this park is a great place to stop by and unwind together for a while. Pack your own picnic basket, take pictures amidst the greenery, and have a great time together.

Are you the sporty type? Another interesting thing to do is walking, jogging, or cycling around the park. You can also buy food pellets nearby for 10 Baht and feed the fish in the park’s pond.

3. Learn Something New at the Children’s Discovery Museum Bangkok

Families with kids are recommended to go to the Children’s Discovery Museum Bangkok, which is only a 2-minute walk away from the Chatuchak Weekend Market. This free science-focused museum has interactive outdoor and indoor exhibits for kids to keep them engaged. Foreigners are required to bring their passports for ID verification.

Open from 10 am to 4 pm, this park lets you take your kids to try various activities, like City Building, Dinosaur Digging, Pretend Play Area, Large Block Building, and Library. On top of that, a decently sized water park is available, so make sure to pack extra clothes for the kids!

After exploring, you can savour delicious food from across the street at Chatuchak, as there are no food stalls available inside the museum.

If you want an unforgettable shopping experience in Bangkok, you should not miss Chatuchak Weekend Market. It is a place where you can find anything you want, from fashion and art to food and souvenirs. You can mingle with the locals, too, and learn more about their culture and lifestyle.
