Suggested College Tour Itineraries

Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities.  We also suggest others worth considering and why.  

Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Suggested starting point

• Boston College
• Northeastern
• Boston University

These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity.  All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.  

For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst .  If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .

Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game.  If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.

The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .

The schools on this list are medium to large schools in suburban and urban settings. Time permitting, consider also checking out William & Mary , Virginia Tech and Washington and Lee .

These schools are all classic medium-large universities. For a smaller school experience, check out the Colleges that Change Lives in the area, such as Knox , Beloit , Wheaton , Wabash , Kalamazoo and Cornell College .

These schools provide a broad mix of sizes and settings. Kenyon and Oberlin exude a small school, small town feel, Ohio state and Michigan a classic Big Ten college town feel, and Case Western and Carnegie Mellon a more urban feel.

Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.

• UC San Diego

These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day.  The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.

If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

Juniors, Now’s the Time to Schedule Your College Visits

Juniors, it’s time for you to get started on college visits.

Whether you’re thinking about knocking out one or two or hitting a series of colleges, here is your go-to guide for setting up a college visit. 

We’ll walk you through a steps to take before, during and after visits to help you find your perfect fit.

What Can Juniors Do Right Now? 

Juniors can do a lot right now, including developing a checklist and other things you can put on the family calendar.

Step 1: Start talking.

That’s right. Sit down and have a conversation with your family.

What are you thinking you want to do for college? Do you think you want to go to a large school? A small school? What fits your personality and preferences?

Start talking with adults you trust about schools that make sense for your needs.

Step 2: Brainstorm.

Have no idea where to start? Start a brainstorming session where you write down your visions about what you think your college experience might be like.

Rather than throwing a dart at a map and jumping in the car, it’s a good idea to ask yourself a few questions: 

• Do you see yourself going to a large or small school?
• Do you want a lot of personalized attention? 
• Are you looking for a more selective institution? 
• How far away from home do you want to live?
• When you envision college, what do you think of?

In other words, think broadly about your college visit choices, then think more narrowly about the colleges you’d like to visit. 

Put a premium on relationships when you make this list.

What kind of people do you want to meet? What type of individuals do you want to learn from?

Remember, college is about way more than pretty residence halls, beautiful buildings and other aesthetic things. It’s about the people who influence you along the way.

Step 3: Research at least one college.

Choose at least one college and do as much research as you can. Learn more about that particular school’s:

• Admission criteria
• Results — how many students go to graduate school, get a job after graduation, etc.
• School profile 
• Academics and selectivity: Are you looking for a serious academic environment? Would you rather go to a school that focuses on undergraduate teaching — or research? 
• Potential majors
• Housing information
• Extracurricular activities
• Athletics opportunities

After you narrow down some of the “big” things, like distance from home and general experience, then you can start thinking about things like major, requirements and more.

Does this college college or university you’ve researched fit the bill? If not, look for another one. If that one makes sense, move toward school as your first visit.

Step 4: Check the calendar.

Once you’ve honed in on your first college to visit, figure out what visit day fits into your schedule. Check your calendar and your family members’ calendars too. Remember, mom and dad likely have to drive you to your visit or coordinate flights. You need to plan the visit with your parents, and you might need to make sure your brothers’ and sisters’ schedules are open too. 

How to Set Up a College Visits

First of all, make sure you (the student!) call the schools where you’re interested in setting up a visit.

Your mom or dad should not make the call. It’s time to put some of those adulting skills into practice.

Step 1: Think through what you want to do on your visit. 

Who are the must-see people on your radar—the soccer coach, tutoring center, a financial aid advisor? It’s OK if you’re not sure. You can work through some of these questions when you make your phone call to the admissions office.

Step 2: Call the college or university’s admissions office. 

Don’t set up a visit online. Talk to an actual person.

Or, if you do set up a visit online, call and make sure the admissions office received your scheduled visit—and that it didn’t get lost in cyberspace.

Have a detailed conversation about what you’d like to do when you’re on the visit.

Step 3: Ask for a personal campus visit. 

Try to steer clear of group visit days. 

Naturally, you’re an individual and have specific interests and needs.

When you’re stuck on a group visit, no one student will have the same interests as you. You could get stuck touring the gym for 25 minutes of your hour-long tour (even if you’re not an athlete or hate the thought of a treadmill). Who wants that?

A personal campus visit ensures your visit is all about you and nobody else.

Step 5: Get ready! 

You don’t want to start a college visit without doing some preparation. You want to know as much as possible about the college you’re visiting before you visit. 

Simple. You don’t want to waste time learning stuff you already know. If you already know the basics, like the size of the college, majors available and costs, why spend time relearning stuff you already know? 

Plus, it brings camaraderie with the admission staff or chemistry professors when you say, “Yeah! And that biochemistry secondary major—that sounds cool.”

You’ll never believe how much people’s eyes light up when you know something about the college or university already.

What to Do During/After Visits

When you arrive at the admissions office, go to the campus visit coordinator’s desk and introduce yourself. That individual will help you get your day started in the right direction. 

While you’re on your visit, do your best to ask great questions. You want to think of questions before you visit and ask everyone questions. Get each person talking about the college or university you’re visiting. It’s best to get candid thoughts from each individual you talk to.

This may sound like a pain, but it’s a good idea to get all your thoughts together and take a minute or two to jot down all your initial reactions to the college you’ve just visited. Grab your phone and type in some notes on the card or plane ride home.

Believe it or not, it’s difficult to remember each individual school after your 10th college visit.

Visiting Year Applicants

Each year Smith College admits a limited number of visiting women students who wish to spend a semester or year at the college. Though entering as nondegree candidates, visiting students may use their Smith coursework for credit at their own college or university.

As a visiting student, you will be enrolled in Smith courses, live in our residence halls and become involved in extracurricular activities. You may apply to transfer to Smith after one semester of a visiting program with approval from your home institution. Financial aid is not available for visiting students.

The application deadline for September entrance is July 1.

Applicants should use the   Transfer Common Application  and select the Visiting Student - Fall program.

Eligibility

Applications are welcome from well-qualified students with strong academic records. You may apply to spend a semester or a year at Smith.

Financial aid is not available for visiting students.

International Students

International students must be in their final year of studies leading to university entrance in their own country or currently enrolled in a university program abroad. If accepted, candidates will be expected to present examination results—Baccalaureate, Arbitur or GCSE, for example—before enrolling.

Junior Year Visiting Program for the Study of Mathematics

The Junior Program is for undergraduate women mathematics majors who want a mathematically intense semester or year among other women. (While the program is intended to take place during the junior year, second-semester sophomores and rising seniors will also be considered.)

There are no formal mathematical prerequisites for the Junior Program. An applicant should be majoring or intending to major in mathematics and should include two letters of recommendation from mathematics professors as part of her application.

Program for the Study of Women and Gender

Students must be at least a sophomore and have a strong academic record that includes two or more women and gender studies courses. In this program you may take courses in any department or program at Smith in addition to the many women and gender studies offerings.

12-College Exchange

Students studying at colleges participating in the 12-College Exchange (Amherst, Bowdoin, Connecticut College, Connecticut College National Theater Institute, Dartmouth, Mount Holyoke, Trinity, Vassar, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Wheaton and Williams-Mystic Seaport Program) as well as the Pomona-Smith Exchange must apply through the  12-College Exchange Program  and not as visiting students.

Required Materials

Smith College uses the Common Application for prospective visiting students. There is no application fee. 

• Transfer Common Application
• College Transcripts : Smith requires official transcripts sent from all post-secondary institutions attended. To initiate that process, use the "Download Transcript Request Form" located in the "Colleges Attended" section of the "Academic History" quadrant of your Common Application.
• High School Transcript or GED Certificate : Official high school transcript(s) or GED certificate are required. Please contact your secondary school(s) and ask for official transcripts to be sent directly to the Smith College Office of Admission via mail or email . GED certificates may also be sent to this address.
• Transfer Mid-Term Report:  The  Common Application Mid-Term Report  is required from those applicants  currently enrolled  in college courses. Completed forms may be uploaded on the application "Documents" screen or  emailed  to the Smith College Office of Admission.
• Transfer College Report : The Common Application College Report is required for all visiting student applicants. This form must be filled out by a college official. Completed forms should be mailed or emailed directly to the Smith College Office of Admission.
• Two Academic Recommendations : Please submit two recommendations from college instructors who have taught you.

International Applicants

Additionally, international applicants are required to demonstrate English proficiency and may be required to submit testing. International citizens whose primary language is not English or have not attended a school at which English is the primary language of instruction will be required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or the Duolingo English Test/DET. Applicants may be exempt from this requirement if they:

• Identify English as their first language;
• Have attended a school in which the primary language of instruction is English for the duration of their secondary school career;
• Have attended a school in the United States and been instructed in English for at least two years;
• Are enrolled in or have completed the IB Diploma Program or A level curriculum taught in English.

Please note that the test requirement is based on citizenship, not on where a student attends school.

Standardized Testing Policy

Smith has a  test-optional  standardized testing policy.

Smith College has been test-optional since 2009 and remains test-optional today.

Our admission process is holistic.

At Smith we look at the whole applicant and do not rely on a test score to define your potential for academic success. Your academic record, extracurricular activities, essay, recommendation letters, personal accomplishments and characteristics, and engagement in your community are all carefully considered during our review and selection process.

Unsure about whether to submit your scores?

If you are unsure of whether you should submit your test scores, we advise you to base your decision on whether you feel that your standardized test scores accurately reflect your academic ability and potential, or highlight an academic strength. If you choose not to submit test scores, you will in no way be disadvantaged in the admission process.

Does the test optional policy apply to both US Citizens and International citizens?

The submission of SAT or ACT scores is optional for all applicants.

International applicants are required to demonstrate English proficiency and may be required to submit testing. General tour information.

The Harvard University Visitor Center offers several different types of tours. For our in person tour offerings on campus, we provide the Official Historical Tour of Harvard. All tours are provided to the public for free and to private groups for a fee. Our tours typically run 45-60 minutes.

We also offer a free self-guided historical tour through the Visit Harvard mobile app, which you can download on iOS and Android devices. You can take this self-guided tour on campus or from the comfort of your own home.

Information About Free In Person Tours

The in person Historical Tour of Harvard explores Harvard Yard. Tours depart from the Visitor Center which is located at the front desk in the Smith Campus Center. Our address is 1350 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138.

Registration for our in person tours must be made in advance. Registration is made available starting the Friday before your tour week. Parties of up to 14 persons can register for a free in person tour. Parties of 15-60 are encouraged to submit a request for a private tour .

Registered tour goers should arrive at the Visitor Center at least 15 minutes before your tour to check-in. Tours depart from the Smith Campus Center and end in Harvard Yard.

Information About the Visit Harvard Mobile App

Visit Harvard is a free mobile app by the Harvard Visitor Center that features a collection of self-guided tours centered around the Harvard University experience. The Visit Harvard mobile app can be downloaded by anyone with a smartphone, tablet, or desktop, to be enjoyed from wherever you might be visiting, whether it’s in-person at Harvard or from the comfort of your own home.

What tours are being offered in the mobile app? Currently on the app, visitors can take a mobile version of our popular in-person and virtual tour, the Historical Tour of Harvard.

How long is the mobile tour? This self-guided tour takes place across 14 mapped stops through Harvard’s campus. At a standard walking pace, it will take between 45-60 minutes to complete the 1 mile long tour.

Can I take the mobile tour in-person or virtually? The mobile tour is designed to be accessed in-person on Harvard University’s campus, starting at the Harvard Visitor Center, located at the Smith Campus Center in Harvard Square (1350 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA). The Botanic Garden of Smith College

Campus arboretum.

The campus arboretum has been growing since the botanic garden was founded in 1895. The history of our tree collection can be easily felt when walking the Smith College campus, as we care for a number of stately, older trees. That's one of the reasons we have so many State Champion Trees. While the tree care philosophy has changed over the years, and how we think about tree collections as they relate to conservation in our changing climate has also shifted, the dedication our arborists have for caring for our campus arboretum remains steadfast.

Come and experience the beauty of the arboretum. There is a walking  tree tour on the campus map, as well as an audio tour called TreeSpeak , which tells the stories of Smith’s most prominent trees. 

State Champions

Through the botanic garden’s commitment of caring for the campus arboretum, today's collection contains a number of notable, historic trees that have been designated as state champions by the state for their size and significance in the landscape. A long tradition of celebrating the impact that trees have on both the quality of the campus and the Smith College learning environment has allowed many of them to achieve a remarkable size and age. The role of botanic gardens and arboreta grows in importance as the challenges of conserving the value and resilience of the natural communities that our plants represent intensify. We look to build collections that support the natural systems that our campus is situated within and protect the genetic diversity plant populations need to thrive. 

Arboretum Accreditation

The Botanic Garden of Smith College has achieved the highest level of arboretum accreditation–Level IV–from The Morton Arboretum's ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program is the only global initiative to recognize arboreta that achieve particular standards of professional and collection excellence.

The festival will kick off on Friday night, April 12 with the Smith College Museum of Art’s Second Friday from 4–8 p.m., followed by a full roster of events on Saturday from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Most events are free and open to the public. Leigh Fagin assumed the inaugural role of director of the Smith Office for the Arts last fall and started envisioning Smith Arts Day as a way to highlight work already happening in the arts on campus. Upon arrival at Smith, Fagin found that the arts permeate campus life—from department led exhibitions, music ensembles, theatre and dance productions to student arts organizations, from cross-disciplinary making spaces to informal craft gatherings, from guest artists to novices. Raising the visibility of these activities is one of SOFA’s mandates, along with fostering collaborations and elevating the role that the arts play in a Smith education. President Sarah Willie-LeBreton is a staunch advocate for the arts. “I have been thrilled to discover that the arts are flourishing here at Smith,” she said “Across the College, in formal and casual settings, the arts challenge students and bring them joy while helping to build a curious and compassionate campus community. I am delighted that Smith Arts Day will celebrate the wide-ranging creative work of students, faculty, and staff.”

Fagin chose April 13 for the first Arts Day because there were a number of performances and events already planned that she could build upon. She then invited the Smith community to propose activities. “One of my favorite parts of planning Smith Arts Day is that there was a very natural flow of ideas that came in through an open call,” Fagin said. “The day is not meant to be a comprehensive look at everything, but a snapshot of the kinds of activities that make the arts at Smith unique.” The result is almost 40 events and exhibitions—a mix of works in progress, performances, workshops, open rehearsals, installations, art-making activities, and even some dance parties. Participants can take a tap class, make prints from Lego, see theatre lights focused, try bell-ringing, make a collage bookmark, and contribute to a community mural. Attendees can take in special installations and ongoing exhibitions that explore the intersection of art with other humanities and the sciences. Audiences can engage with student performances at the Senior Dance Concert , the Iva Dee Hiatt Memorial Choral Concert, Smith Shakes production of Romeo & Juliet , and 10-minute plays by the Student Theatre Committee.

Almost all of the events are free to attend and participate, with a few events being first-come, first-served due to space limitations such as classes and workshops. JCSU campus holidays - no tours

Guided individual/family tours are offered on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 AM and 2 PM. To accommodate more individuals/families in a session, families are limited to four guests (one prospective student and three guests). Families with 10 or more guests are required to reserve a group tour .

Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

He's taken a step back since then, however, missing the cut twice in his last four events and is coming off a disappointing 64th at the Valspar Championship.

Those setbacks have kept his Masters DFS pricing low, and that could mean value at Augusta National. He missed the cut in this event last year, but previously was on a roll, finishing no worse than 22nd since 2017. One of McClure's top fantasy golf picks is Scottie Scheffler. The 27-year-old has spent the last 46 weeks at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and spent 80 weeks at No. 1 since 2022. Scheffler earned his first PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open in 2022 and followed that up with victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play to vault to the top.

He won the 2022 Masters for a fourth win in two months and has piled up four more victories since, with all four of those wins coming in signature events. Scheffler is arguably the best player tee-to-green on the planet and a switch to a mallet putter has seemingly sparked significant improvement on the greens. Last, and certainly not least, Bueckers wants to cap off this UConn run with that elusive championship – but she plans to run it back with the Huskies next season should things go south between now and then.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.
