War painting from a Barcelona Documentary

Watch These Spain Documentaries During Confinement

Great documentaries on spain to prepare your next trip.

Now that everyone is in lockdown and people can’t travel, it’s a great time to… lay on the sofa and watch TV! I’m sure that’s no news, unfortunately, right?

Anyway let me give you some suggestions to do something different from watching Netflix episode after episode. What about dreaming about your next trip to Spain?

Today we’ve selected for you our favorite Spain documentaries, all easily accessible and super cheap from Amazon Prime. Enjoy!

These are our favorite documentaries about Spain:

The gaudi code.

Dive into the amazing math and geometry created by the architecture master Antoni Gaudi for the construction of the most amazing building ever: the Sagrada Familia Church .

Unlike this other 10-minute documentary shot in 2007, The Gaudi Code was released after the interior of the church was finished – what means the images are quite up to date.

Although take into account that it’s a building still under construction and scheduled to be completed by 2026 – to celebrate the 100 anniversary of Antoni Gaudi’s death. So any documentary about it gets dated as the 10 still missing tours get higher and higher…

Rick Steves Episodes on Spain

Rick Steves is the world’s travel guru. His guidebooks are a must-read for anyone planning to travel. And he has a wonderful TV series about travel in Europe. On 2004, season 3 took you to Madrid on their 1st episode, Toledo and Salamanca in their 2nd episode and Sevilla on their last show (13th episode).

Season 5 heads to Barcelona and Catalunya (episode 3), and Season 6 focusses on the South Spain with episode 4 about Granada, Cordoba and Costa del Sol , and episode 5 on more Andalucia (with added Gibraltar and Tangier), then episode 10 is about Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago , and finally episode 11 shows you around the Basque Country .

BTW, I also found he has a special about Southern Spain .

Highlights of Castile: Toledo and Salamanca

Spanish food documentaries

If you are a foodie, you won’t lack of options either. Start with episodes 6 and 7 of The Everyday Gourmet , on paella, tapas and sherry. Continue with episode 8 of chef Anthony Bourdains about food in the Basque Country, then French actor and foodie Gerard Depardieu’s tour of Europe that stops in Catalonia (episode 6) and the Basque Country (episode 3).

For some more excitement, try Bizarre Foods , that after a general episode 2 about Spain on their first season, takes you visiting Madrid on episode 5 of season 6 , and again on episode 8 of season 9 , then follows the Camino de Santiago on episode 5 of their last season.

Finally, for some good laughs, check out comedian  Zane Lamprey trip to discover the Barcelona spirits (episode 10, season 3).

Madrid

Aerial Spain

Do you love documentaries that show you landscapes from a bird eye’s view? If you already have Prime, you’ll get free access to this series of 3 chapters flying over the Spanish coasts, inland and famous cities.

It’s too bad you can only access it if you have Prime, the good news is that they give you 30 days trial for free . So as long as you remember to cancel it some days earlier, you are good to go… and will have access to much more content!

Aerial Spain

The History of Spain: Land on a crossroad

For all of you, history lovers, this is the series you need. 24 half-hour episodes (that can be purchased independently) covering all the aspects of the Spanish history. Get to learn about the Prehistorical times, the Roman Empire (did you know Tarraco, now Tarragona near Barcelona , was once home to several Roman emperors?), the Middle Ages, Christopher Columbus trips, Jewish, Moor and Gipsy communities, the different dinasties that ruled the Kingdom… all the way to the industrial revolution, the Spanish Civil war and the come-back of democracy.

Enough time to learn the language?

Learning Spanish

Being able to communicate, understanding and getting understood makes a whole difference when visiting a country. Locals will be nicer to you if they see you make the effort to communicate in the local tongue rather than expecting to be addressed in your own “foreign” language.

And while being fluent can take years, getting the basics is just a matter of spending some time on it. This 30-episode Spanish course will get you through the basics of grammar and give you key vocabulary that will be undoubtedly helpful when you are abroad visiting not just Spain but also most Central and South American countries (well, and Florida too now that I think about it…)

1. España: La Primera Globalización

❌ESPAÑA. LA PRIMERA GLOBALIZACIÓN. Estreno en cines el 15 de octubre de 2021.

If you want to learn about Spanish history and legacy, “España: la Primera Globalización” or  Spain: The First Globalization  should be your to-go documentary.

I wish I could give a more detailed summary of this movie, but the trailer literally describes it. The director José Luis López Linares explores how the Spanish Empire contributed to the first globalization by discovering unknown lands.

The director has been making documentaries for over twenty years, and argues that this movie is another way to tell history!

If you want to watch this historical documenatry then head to Filmin.

2. El silencio de otros

El silencio de otros documentary

Are you familiar with the Nuremberg Trials? The ones carried out after WWII to judge war crimes against humanity; I bet you heard of them in history class. Well, Spain went through something similar after the almost forty-year dictatorship of Franco. But, the Spanish trial went the completely opposite way, and “El Silencio de Otros” tells the real story.

“El Silencio de Otros,” or The Silence of Others, tells the story of the Argentine lawsuit and the seeking of truth and justice by the victims of Franco’s regimen. To give you a little bit of context, after Franco died in 1975, the political parties in Spain decided to put a patch in history and created negotiated the “Pact of Forgetting.” This pact avoided confronting the legacy of Francoism and did a blind eye to the crimes committed by the dictatorship.

“The pact to forget meant that there would be no accountability for the thousands of people who perished during the Civil War (1936-39). Nor for those who were executed, forced into exile, tortured in prison, or sent to labor camps in the postwar years for having defended democracy against Franco’s fascist coup”  The New York Times , 2014.

This documentary was shot over six years following the survivors and organizers of the Argentine Lawsuit, which used international law to bring justice and truth back to the Spanish people. The Executive Producer of this documentary is the acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar with the direction of the Emmy-winning filmmakers Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar.

“This documentary- brave, emotional, agile, necessary, and insightful- dares to tell the truth” - Cineuropa

In IMBd, most critics agree that this Spanish documentary was necessary and brave!

You can watch this documentary in Filmin and Netflix.

3. Entre la ola y la roca

Entre la ola y la roca documentary

Okay, I found the summary of this documentary a bit complex, so I will let the experts explain it for me.

“Entre la ola y la roca,” or Between the Rock and the Wave, tells the story of barnacle fishermen in Galicia. If you aren’t familiar with barnacle fishing, which I wasn’t until I read about, you will become an expert at it after watching the documentary.

So, to get this seafood, fishermen have to use special equipment that helps them release the barnacle shell from the rocks. Between the Rock and the Wave tell the story of fishermen who risk their lives (literally) to get this beloved seafood and support their families.

But that is not it! It also explores how the lives of Galicians have been affected after the 2002 Prestige oil spill.

This is the professional summary that I promised:

“Living among the “percebeiros” (goose barnacle fishermen) of the Galician coast during the Christmas holidays, this documentary focuses on the relationship between man and his surroundings, man and the sea. An environmental fable, a radiograph of rural Galicia, where years after the Prestige oil spill disaster, the percebeiros are facing an uncertain future.”

Manuel Logar directed the documentary and was praised by the cinema magazine,  Fotograma  for his art.

You can watch this documentary in Filmin.

4. Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo

Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo - Trailer (HD)

My three words to describe “Lots of Kids, a Monkey, and a Castle” would be curious, fun, and familiar. I believe you would genuinely enjoy watching it, and I recommend watching it with family members more than alone.

The actor, Gustavo Salmerón, created this documentary to honor and share the peculiar dreams of his mother, Julia, who wanted to have lots of kids, a monkey, and a castle. And…guess what? She got it! But you must find out how and what happened after she got her dream palace.

This movie got over fifteen awards and twenty nominations, including the Goyas and the San Sebastian Film Festival.

“Life with Julieta can surely not always have been a breeze, but the film absolutely refuses to broach darker themes. So that what viewers take away from  Kids  is the sense that even after 80 years of hard living, it’s still possible to live a meaningful, happy and influential existence- an authentically feel-good message for these feel-bad times” - Hollywood Reported.

Enjoy this documentary in Netflix and Filmin.

5. Camarón: Flamenco y Revolución

CAMARÓN: FLAMENCO Y REVOLUCIÓN | Tráiler Oficial | HD

“Camarón de la Ilsa,” literally translates to “shrimp of the island,” was the best Spanish flamenco singer of ALL times. And, director Alexis Morante brought his life back to the public with his documentary “Camarón: Flamenco y Revolución.”

This Spanish documentary tells the story of José Monge’s life from his humble beginning to an international flamenco singer that moved the hearts of many. The documentary got eight nominations!

If you want to know more about this Spanish artist and others head here!

7 Flamenco Artists to Bring Out Your Most Passionate Side

You can find this shrimp in the sea called Netflix.

Now the movies you were waiting for! For this ones you don’t need streaming platform, just your passion for absorbing history, culture and Spain!

6. History of Spain - FREE

History of Spain - Documentary

There are plenty of videos about Spain’s history and legacy, but I believe  History of Spain  (2020) by Fire of Learning is one of the best by far.

In just a bit more than an hour, yuo will learn everything you need to know, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the beginning of the Spanish colonization.

This video has over 990k views!!!

I would recommend watching this documentary before Spain: The First Globalization, so you have all the historical data needed to enjoy it.

7. Spain: A Country Divided  - FREE

Spain a country divided documentary

Spain: A Country Divided (2022) is a documentary directed by Marcel Mettelsiefen, a multi-award-winning director, camera operator, photographer, and producer. Even though international people are living in Spain, this director is not Spanish, and the documentary was created by a French-German channel called Arte. tv.

The documentary about Spain explores the political polarization in Spain. The movie argues that with the economic crisis of 2008 and the conflict over Catalan independence, the political formations  Podemos  on the left and  Vox  on the right dominate the landscape. And These polarizations also pulled the other parties toward more radical positions. The center was lost. The blockade, lack of consensus, and tensions characterize everyday political life.

This documentary will show you part of Spain’s political life under the narration of a foreign eye.

As of February 7th, 2023, this documentary isn’t online. I didn’t want to delete from the post because I really think that it deserves to make the list. I’ll update the post once I find it online again.

8. Franco- Spain’s Nationa Dictator  - FREE

Franco - Spain's Nationalist Dictator Documentary

Franco: Spain’s Nationalist Dictator (2021) is a biography of Spain’s forty-year dictator, Francisco Franco. In this Spanish documentary, you will learn about the characters responsible for the years of oppression after the Civil War.

This documentary was created by The People’s Profile , a verified Youtube account on historical biographies, and has over 370k views. The video explores the very detail of Franco’s life until the day of his death, trying to understand the background of this unforgettable (and not in the good sense) character.

9. El Cid  - FREE

El Cid - Spain's Greatest Knight Documentary

The People’s Profile is also responsible for this Spanish documentary, which is short and informative about one of Spain’s most iconic knights.

The Cid tells the story of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, who lived in the twelfth century during King Fernando the First and Alfson the VI. The life of this knight sounds like a movie; friendship, love, betrayal, and war are all necessary elements of a successful fantasy movie.

The story is told in less than fifty minutes and has over 150k views.

Now you have nine Spanish documentaries to watch if you want to learn more about Spanish history, culture, and politics. I would like to remind all of you that sometimes Netflix doesn’t offer the same movies in all countries, and three of the four FREE documentaries can be found on Youtube.

I hope you enjoyed this list, and let us know if you watched any of these movies!

Documentaries about Spain to watch before your visit

Free spain documentaries on youtube.

Let´s begin with free Spain Documentaries that anyone check on YouTube right now:

1. Reconquista

If you plan to visit Asturias and Northern Spain , you just owe it to yourself to learn the basic historical data on the Spanish Reconquista .

It was a Christian campaign to recapture Spain from the Moors, which officially started about 718 with the famous Battle of Covadonga . Even though back then it was more of a simple resistance. Only in the 11th century, the Christians started to gain back the Spanish territories.

The documentary also shares some interesting insights on Navarra and the Basque Country .

2. How Spain Bacame Worlds First Super Power

If you love reading about the Age of Discovery and plan to explore Columbus´s sights in Spain , make sure to check this brief documentary on how Spain turned into the Mighty Empire, where the sun would never set.

Another interesting alternative is The Conquistadors , a series dedicated to the life stories of the Spanish conquistadors , like Hernan Cortez or Francisco Pizarro .

3. El Cid – The Knight of Spain

If you love medieval castles , fairs , and knights – learn more about El Cid, the most famous Castilian Knight of the Medieval Spain.

You can also check one of the popular Spanish TV Shows about him. El Cid was born in Vivar , a small town near Burgos . So, if you plan to visit the region of Castile-Leon in Spain, you will not miss the famous Camino Del Cid.

4. The Gaudi Code

If you dream of visiting Barcelona to explore the vibrant Gaudi Landmarks, do not miss The Gaudi Code , one of the newest Spain documentaries. For more details on the life of the iconic architect, you can check God´s Architect and Vida de Gaudi (in Spanish).

Don Quixote

If you dream of a book-themed Don Quixote road trip , check the following Spain Documentaries on YouTube: A Deep Dive into the Tale of Don Quixote (in English), Buscando a Cervantes (in Spanish), Cervantes y la leyenda de Don Quixote (in Spanish), and Historia detras del Quixote (in Spanish). Unfortunately, the best ones are only available in Spanish for now.

Camino de Santiago / The Way of Saint James

Camino de Santiago is one of the top ideas for Spain Bucket List .

El   Camino de Santiago  (or The Way of Saint James) is an extensive network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St.James in the City of  Santiago de Compostela  (Galicia).

While some simply call it one of the oldest hikes in the world,  Camino de Santiago is so much more: it´s about the long-rooted Catholic tradition in Spain, personal challenge, contact with nature, and a unique spiritual journey.

You can check these Spain documentaries to learn more about El Camino de Santiago : Way of St James Full Documentary , Pilgrimage to Santiago , and The Way of Saint James Video Guide .

The Spanish Civil War

Spanish Civil War took place right before World War II, but it is still a topic for debate in modern society.

Back then, many famous writers (like Hemingway or Orwell ) actively supported the Republican side and served as war correspondents in Spain. The conflict ended with the rise of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco . You can check the following Spain documentaries to learn more about him: Franco The Spanish Dictator and The Truth About Franco .

spain travel documentaries

But let me warn you that this is something you do not usually talk about with the Spaniards.

During the Civil War, lots of people had relatives fighting on both sides. Following the political debate back in 2019, the remains of the Spanish dictator were moved from a vast mausoleum to a low-key grave. Ironically, I visited the Valley of the Fallen near Madrid (where Franco was originally buried) back in 2018, right before the exhumation.

The mausoleum inside of the mountain was actually quite impressive in terms of the structure and grandiose decorations, but the atmosphere was a bit frightening.

If you are a fan of Hemingway , check out one of the vintage Spain films he was involved in – The Spanish Earth . Also, Spanish Civil War and Litterature , and a documentary in Spanish Hemingway y los Corresposales Extranjeros .

The Canary Islands

If you loved my posts about the beautiful nature of the Canary Islands – Go Wild Canary Islands will be one of your favorite picks on this list of Spain Documentaries. It is full of the Spanish otherworldly landscapes.

Northern Spain

If you plan a Northern Spain road trip , you might enjoy this travel documentary Spain´s Atlantic North Full Nature Film .

If you dream of exploring the top landmarks of Southern Spain and planning an Andalusia Road trip , check out this DW Documentary on Visiting Andalusia .

The Basque Country

The Basque country is such an interesting region with rich historical roots and intriguing past.

I have briefly mentioned (during my trip to the Basque Country ) that the local language is completely different from all the other languages in Europe. Historians still debate where exactly the Basque language came from, how developed, and why it is so distinctive.

Some researchers claim that Basques descended from Neolithic Farmers who were genetically isolated from other European nations (due to the geographic location).

The inhospitable terrain of the Basque Country helped locals preserve their land and traditions through the times of the Arabs and the Romans in Spain. Even during the Spanish Civil War, while the Basque Country suffered the forbade of language and the destruction of Guernica , the region was granted relative economic and political autonomy by the Spanish dictator Franco .

In Madrid, viewers can follow the family as they soak up delicious classic dishes like slow-cooked lamb, churros, and local sweets originally baked for the monarchy.

The show continues with the family’s travel through Andalusia, where they indulge in coveted Bluefin tuna fresh from the sea, and on to Valencia, where they immerse themselves in the secrets of making the perfect paella.

In addition to learning about local delicacies, viewers can also travel vicariously through the family’s outdoor adventures, including paragliding across the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and milking goats to make specialty cheese in Asturias. Of course, the show will introduce viewers to plenty of local experts, celebrated chefs, and old friends of the family with each episode too.

“My daughters have heard endless stories about the people, places, and food that shaped me as a young man, but we got the chance to go visit, meet and taste everything together,” Andrés adds. “There is no better way to learn about Spanish culture than with a fork and spoon in hand.”

Over recent years, the public’s fascination with dark tourism destinations has boomed. Sites such as Chernobyl and Auschwitz draw in thousands of tourists every year. With so many of the population sharing a fascination for dark history, it is no wonder that so many have tuned into Netflix’s ‘Dark Tourist.

The show follows journalist David Farrier as he travels around hoping to experience the most macabre destinations that the world has to offer. Farrier’s quest to unearth the morbid takes him to several high profile dark tourism destinations, including the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, on a JFK assassination tour and he even witnesses an exorcism in Mexico City.

Although Farrier sometimes comes across as a mediocre Louis Theroux, this thought-provoking travel show succeeds in its aim and transports you into the unknown. The result is an interesting series that explores the darker side of life (and death).

Joanna Lumley’s India

Joanna Lumley is a British actress probably most well-known for her role as the outrageous Patsy of Absolutely Fabulous. What is perhaps less known about her is that she was born in Kashmir, India, in 1946, and the descendent of British colonists in India going back to 1777.

Originally aired in 2017 with three episodes, Joanna Lumley’s India takes viewers on a personal trip across the country where she explores modern India and finds connections to members of her own family and the experience of being and speaking English in India .

Lumley has also hosted travel shows on Japan, the Silk Road, the Caribbean, and the Trans-Siberia express train.

Chasing Coral is a fascinating documentary about the disappearance of coral around the world. In this chasing coral, a team of divers, researchers and photographers set out on an ocean adventure to document the bleaching of Coral in warming seas. This phenomenon is when corals lose their beautiful and vibrant colors to become white, dying shortly after.

The point of this documentary is to show that the coral’s death is the result of climate change and the rise in temperatures that are absorbed by the oceans.

The documentary takes us to some of the most beautiful destinations in the world such as the Florida Keys, Hawaii and the Bahamas. More than that, this documentary also shows the important damage climate change has done to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

I definitely recommend this documentary to anyone who wants to really understand the impact of human activity on the ocean’s ecosystem.

If you’ve ever thought of visiting Cuba there are many Cuban movies and documentaries to help you to research your trip, but none are as epic as this one.

Many people believe that Cuba is a country frozen in time, but this Netflix documentary features Jon Alpert’s travels to Cuba over a span of nearly five decades.

And while the relationships between the United States and Cuba has been fragmented at times, he visited each time as an American journalist. It starts in 1970s, just over a decade since the Cuban revolution when the country was thriving.

Instead of giving his perspective on Cuba, he interviews three families who share their own stories of every day life. He continues to visit Cuba to find these families to update their stories. Over the decades the political situation and relationship with the United States changes quite dramatically.

And while he also interviews Fidel Castro, most of the film is really about everyday Cubans and their highs and lows.

Jack Whitehall is a British comedian who attended private school and has a somewhat disjointed relationship with his father Michael because of this. Jack also never got to take a gap year before going to university so season one of Travels with my Father is all about Jack finally embarking on a traditional ‘gap year’ trip to Southeast Asia. The twist is he takes his father with him so they can strengthen their bond.

The series takes place in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and highlights some of the gap year activities that can be done including full moon parties on the beach and visiting Angkor Wat. By the end of their travels, they reflect on what they have learned about each other and themselves.

The show continues in a similar fashion in the subsequent seasons where Michael takes Jack on a culture and history tour around Europe, Jack shows Michael everything the US has to offer, and both his mother and father join him for a road trip in Australia.

If you are a fan of Italy, Italian art and History, then watch the gorgeous and surprisingly brutal history of the famous Medici’s of Florence.

The Netflix show is so well done with gorgeous cinematography, beautiful costumes and stage settings. The show includes all the surrounding countryside and historic sites that document the Medici Family and their major influence on Florence, Venice, and even Rome (two popes were related to the Medici family).

It also showcases early Catholic power and greed. The Pope had absolute power and a religious mission that seemed corrupt whichever person was Pope and ruler.

The Medici focus really hits the major sites of the city and also the start of the Renaissance period in Italy. The crowning of the main dome in the cathedral was a major achievement during this time frame and it was really fascinating to see how this was depicted and shown in development and the struggles of the Medici family to get this undertaking done.

Also, it was interesting to see how easy it was during that time frame to create wealth and also lose it depending on your affiliations and business relationships with the pope and other influential rulers of that time.

Watch the Medici’s on Netflix and if you visit Florence, you’ll gain a better understanding of the Medici fame and fortune in the area.

Released at the beginning of 2021, The Serpent is not a travel show in and of itself, but it will inevitably allure travelers into visiting the many places explored by the main characters.

Aired on Netflix, the series tells the real story of Charles Sobhraj, a French serial killer of Indian and Vietnamese origins who in the mid-1970s drugged, robbed and killed a large number of backpackers travelling between Thailand, India and Nepal.

Sobhraj and his Quebecoise girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc were finally identified as the authors of the crimes thanks to the work of Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg, who, albeit the many reservations of the Dutch ambassador to Thailand, set to investigate the disappearance of a Dutch couple and through a series of lead eventually managed to uncover the culprits.

My Octopus Teacher is an award-winning and very heart-touching documentary on Netflix that covers how a filmmaker spent a year trying to capture a wild octopus on camera and also form a friendship with it.

For about a year, Craig Foster films a wild octopus he came across while trying out free-diving through an underwater kelp forest in South Africa.

Over the period, Craig and the octopus develop a bond with the octopus almost showing Craig around and not being uninhibited by his presence as he follows it.

Craig watches as it protects itself, loses an arm to an attack and then regrows it too. At the end of the documentary, the octopus naturally passes away after mating and trying to protect its eggs.

Filmed entirely near Cape Peninsula in South Africa, this beautiful documentary is not to be missed as it covers an offbeat relationship between man and nature.

7 Best Camino de Santiago Movies

Get your tinto and tapas (Spanish red wine & snacks) ready for these uplifting and inspiring movies about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage!

1. The Way (2010)

spain travel documentaries

By far the most popular movie about the Camino de Santiago, The Way looks at the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.”

It begins with a father (Martin Sheen) from California who ventures to France to collect the remains of his deceased son who suddenly died while hiking the Camino de Santiago.

Without any planning or training or consulting a packing list , the father decides to complete the pilgrimage to honor his son’s memory. Although inexperienced as a hiker, he soon discovers the journey on the Camino Frances is more than just physical.

Setting off from St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port, he meets many other hikers along the way in the search for life’s greater meaning and is forever changed.

Without a doubt, we highly recommend this Camino movie for depiction of the hostels and Camino Spirit alone.

2. I’ll Push You (2016)

movie cover with a man pushing his friend in wheelchair with a green landscape

I’ll Push You is a Camino de Santiago documentary featuring an intimate look at the friendship of a lifetime between two best friends.

Together, they set off for a 35-day journey through the hills and valleys (literally and figuratively) of the Camino. On the 2014 trek through Spain, they battle neurological disease and highlight the struggles of being in a wheelchair.

Depicting the meaning of friendship, vulnerability, and generosity, this Camino film is an inspiration for those who wish to walk the Camino but find it impossible to begin.

Not only has the documentary resonated with viewers for its take on friendship, but also those looking for a story of faith, hope, and love.

We also recommend reading the book I’ll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles, Two Best Friends, and One Wheelchair .

3. Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago (2013)

spain travel documentaries

Walking the Camino: 6 Ways to Santiago is a documentary film about six pilgrims’ responses to undertaking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

Annie, Tomas, Misa, Jack, Tatiana, and Sam are all undergoing the daunting, yet enlightening, trek for different reasons. However, the experience results in a spiritual and perspective change for each of the 6 hikers.

Focusing on each hiker’s personal epiphanies, the filmmaker does a great job inspiring others to take the leap of faith to start walking the Way of Saint James, push their limits in the days to come, and change their outlooks on life.

Additionally, no matter the weather, the entire Camino film is beautifully photographed, ensuring you’ll be sufficiently inspired after viewing!

4. Camino de Santiago – A Spiritual Journey (2018)

spain travel documentaries

Camino de Santiago – A Spiritual Journey is a documentary film featuring interviews with six different men who made the exciting pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago

The film depicts the journeys of the men while making fascinating historical references. For example, we learn about the Knights Templar, an organized Christian group who kept European travelers visiting sites in the Holy Land during medieval times safe, and it’s lasting legacy.

In the end, it’s a film about faith: in spirituality, in humanity, and in the impact of the adventure to Santiago de Compostela.

5. Camino Skies (2019)

spain travel documentaries

Camino Skies is a documentary film about everyday people doing the extraordinary while facing grief.

Certainly, this film can be considered both inspirational and heartbreaking, so get your tissues ready! It showcases not only the mental capabilities to heal from loss but also the physical limitations due to crippling disease and old age.

In the Camino de Santiago film, we see a beautiful juxtaposition between personal irritability and unending camaraderie.

Keep in mind, the documentary is a budget film, so don’t expect exceptional landscapes and imagery. Rather, watch it for the story of several strangers over the course of their life-changing adventure .

Not an Amazon Prime member? Most of these Camino films are available on Amazon — if you’re not a member, you can get your 30-day free trial here .

6. Es Usted un Peregrino? (Are you a pilgrim?) (2013)

spain travel documentaries

Es Usted un Peregrino? (Are you a Pilgrim? is a documentary about a determined man who embarked on the Camino pilgrimage alone at 71 years old.

While he was happy with his marriage and family, he felt there was something missing from his spiritual life. During his journey, he takes things at his own pace and meets other trekkers looking for life’s answers.

If you’ve been on the Camino, we’re sure you can relate to this!

In the end, his relationship with God and humanity is re-shaped. We recommend this film on the Camino to those who are looking for that missing piece to life and think the Way (as the Camino is called in English) might help them on life’s journey.

7. Footprints: The Path of Your Life (2016)

spain travel documentaries

Different from many other documentaries which focus on the Camino Frances (the most popular route), Footprints: The Path of Your Life , showcases the journey of 10 Catholic young men on the Camino Norte. Expecting some epic scenery, the men instead discover the valuable lessons the trek can teach us: commitment, perseverance, helpfulness, and spirituality. Remember, in order to succeed you only need to get up one more time than you fall!

Since the pilgrimage film depicts the struggle of the rather Camino accurately — from the importance of choosing a good backpack, to sleeping bags, to inevitable blisters — we recommend checking this film out. Genuinely, their experience is applicable to anyone traveling through life or looking for answers, not just Camino pilgrims.

8. BONUS: 3 Caminos (2021)

spain travel documentaries

In 2021, the television show, 3 Caminos debuted. The show highlights five people from diverse backgrounds who met while hiking the Camino de Santiago in 2000.

After their first Camino, the pilgrims return home to their lives. The show then goes on to depict the three stages of five lives: their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Each of the five friends experience the various emotions of life like love, courage, loss, and despair on the way to finding purpose.

Although they made the first Camino for completely different reasons , their friendship evolves into undertaking two more Caminos together.

While you might not see as much Spanish scenery or Camino culture, this is a fun show as we all have one common question: What impact the Camino — and those we meet on it — will have on our lives forevermore?

PAMPLONA, Spain: Runaway LaLiga leaders Real Madrid continued their march towards the title with an easy 4-2 victory away at Osasuna on Saturday (Mar 16), with Vinicius Jr scoring a brace.

Real are alone at the league summit with 72 points, 10 ahead of second-placed Girona who face Getafe away later on Saturday. Osasuna are 10th with 36 points.

The win extended Real's unbeaten streak to 23 matches.

"Great game, from the beginning to the end, with good commitment, good attitude; it was an important game to get ahead of and we made the most of it," manager Carlo Ancelotti told Real Madrid TV.

spain travel documentaries

Vinicius put the visitors ahead after four minutes but Osasuna's Ante Budimir levelled the score three minutes later by slotting in a close-range shot following a corner.

Dani Carvajal restored Real's lead after 18 minutes, using the outside of his foot to steer a curving shot into the far corner.

Brahim Diaz scored the third goal for the visitors in the 61st minute, before Vinicius got his second three minutes later with a low finish from a tight angle inside the box.

spain travel documentaries

"Today he (Vinicius Jr) could (have scored) four goals without a problem; he has been extraordinary in all the situations he has had, correct, cold in front of the goal. We need a player like that," Ancelotti added.

In stoppage time, Osasuna got their second goal when Iker Munoz received a cutback inside the box and sent a powerful shot into the net.

Arda Guler had the chance to score a fifth goal for Real Madrid in the dying moments of the match but his shot from the centre of the field hit the top of the crossbar and bounced out.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Wonders About the Past 2 Million Years

The “Game of Thrones” actor, now hosting a documentary series on climate change, is captivated by genetics research, algorithms and tiny art.

  • Share full article

A pixelated image of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

By Kathryn Shattuck

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wants people to step away from the abyss when it comes to climate action.

“It’s a very difficult balance,” said the Danish actor, who portrayed Jaime Lannister in “Game of Thrones.” “You want to get people aware, you want to inspire change. But I think we’ve gone overboard by making it into this doomsday.”

“It’s exhausting for everyone,” he added. “And it’s not quite true, actually.”

In “An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet,” a documentary series from Bloomberg Originals, Coster-Waldau meets with scientists, activists and ordinary folks who have developed ingenious solutions to global issues — things like sargassum that captures carbon on St. Vincent, worms that eat plastic in Spain and a zero-waste village in Japan.

It’s an insane endeavor, Coster-Waldau said, but he predicts bluer skies ahead.

“The biggest resource, and we keep forgetting that, is that we need each other,” he said. “What humans can do when we pull together, it’s incredible.”

In a video call from his home north of Copenhagen, Coster-Waldau — who will play William of Normandy in the upcoming “King and Conqueror” series — discussed why George the Poet’s podcast, miniature art and “3 Body Problem” have captured his attention.

These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Eske Willerslev and His Genetics Research

What he’s doing is understanding who we are by looking back in time. Now they can actually extract DNA from soil samples, so they picked down in northeast Greenland and were able to go back 2 million years . And that means now you can see how this world of ours has changed dramatically many, many times.

‘We, the Drowned’ by Carsten Jensen

It’s an amazing novel that I just revisited about Marstal, a small town in Denmark — a seafaring town, a fisherman’s town — and the riders of freight ships from this town. It’s a historical novel, but it’s incredibly well told.

Them Keitels!

That’s my best friend Joe Derrick’s music so please, to anyone who reads this, check it out. I’ve known him my whole life, so a lot of the songs have so much meaning to me.

Fukushima, Japan

I was out with a scientist in an area that was still not open, and we were in these hazmat suits, measuring. I said that to him, “Is it true that no matter what, nature will just be fine if we take humans out of the equation?” He said: “Well, yes, but humans are also part of nature. We’ve been here for so long now, and a lot of animals also depend on us. You take us out of the equation and suddenly we open up the doors for other predators.” I never thought of it like that.

‘Have You Heard George’s Podcast?’

George the Poet is of Ugandan descent, living in London. It’s brilliant. It’s poetic. It’s beautiful.

Pondering Algorithms

I do find it interesting that in a world where we absolutely want to have inclusion, we’re creating so many more boxes to put ourselves into. Suddenly it doesn’t seem very free and very open, but very the opposite. Have we taken over what we hate about algorithms in the way that we look at the world? That, without wanting to, we steer our focus toward what will confirm our bias?

Nashulai Maasai Conservancy in Kenya

I’d been to Africa before, but standing with a Maasai man , walking over the Serengeti, then 50 giraffes suddenly come running past and the wildebeest is there and he’s talking about the lions over there, and feeling the whole ground shaking — it was humbling.

‘3 Body Problem’

I am insanely excited about this show from two of the guys [Dan Weiss and David Benioff, with Alexander Woo] who did “Game of Thrones.” It’s sci-fi, and this is how I understood it: We know that aliens are coming. They won’t be coming for a long time, but they’re going to come to take over. So how are we going to deal with this?

There are so many incredible storytellers. If you want to watch a movie that will blow your mind, one film that really stood out to me and touched me massively is a Swedish film by the Iranian Swedish director Ali Abbasi. I could also recommend his second feature, “ Holy Spider .” Brilliant.

Small Is Beautiful NYC

A small gallery , but they’ve got some amazing stuff. I love everything miniature, the idea that we are flying through space on this planet, and if you zoom out far enough, we literally are just a pebble on a beach.

Girls State

After a year-long hiatus the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for its 26th edition, which will take place in Durham, N.C., from April 4-7. The festival will kick things off with “ Girls State ,” the Apple Original docu that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

“Since 2022, it was always the plan to only have the festival be on pause for one year,” says Emily Foster, Full Frame co-director. “Ultimately it was due to an overall strategic planning review that was happening at the center.”

This year, the CDS will produce Full Frame in partnership with Duke venue and production management, the events and operations branch of the university.

The Full Frame 2024 program includes 20 features that will screen in competition in the New Docs category, along with 14 short films. Included in its competition line-up are Angela Patton and Natalie Rae’s “Daughters,” which premiered at Sundance and sold to Netflix; Ibrahim Nash’at’s “Hollywoodgate,” which earned rave reviews after its Venice Film Festival premiere; and Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat’s “Sugarcane,” which premiered at Sundance and sold to National Geographic.

The majority of the feature films in the New Docs category have already made their world premieres at various film festivals around the world.

“As we program the festival, we are not premiere-focused the way some other events are,” Full Frame co-director and artistic director Sadie Tillery explains. “We are always very excited to have a discovery in the lineup, a film that is screening in Durham for the first time, but it’s not a priority as we set the lineup.”

In addition to the 34 films in New Docs, 16 features and two shorts will screen out of competition in Full Frame’s Invited category. Feature docus include Sundance docus “Eno” (Gary Hustwit) and closing night film “Luther: Never Too Much” (Dawn Porter), as well as Michael Selditch’s “Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field,” which premiered at Tribeca and the world premiere of D.L. Anderson’s “Red Whiteville and Blue.”

The Invite program does not usually include short films, but this year Tillery made an exception for one by late Academy Award winning director Julia Reichert, who died in 2022. Together with her partner and longtime co-director Steven Bognar, Reichert directed “American Factory,” which won an Oscar in 2020. Reichert and Bognar’s short film “Julia’s Stepping Stones,” which was made in the final months of Reichert’s life, will make its world premiere at Full Frame.

“It’s a film that looks back at Julia’s career and what led her to filmmaking,” says Tillery. “It’s told in her own words. So it’s her life story in her voice and amazingly (Julia and Steve) recorded it before she died.”

“Julia’s Stepping Stones” will screen along side Reichert’s first documentary, “Growing up Female,” which was released in 1971.

Full Frame will also continue its tradition of inviting a filmmaker to curate a special thematic program. For this year’s fest, “Eno” filmmaker, Gary Hustwit and doc filmmaker Jessica Edwards (“Mavis!”) have put together a program titled “In Process: Documenting Creativity,” which explores the creative process through films that illuminate how artists — on both sides of the lens and across a variety of mediums — make their work. The series features six selections, four features and two shorts.

In total, this year’s festival will screen 60 films selected from 1,000 submissions.

“It sounds sort of cliche, but there’s something for everyone audience wise,” says Tillery. “There are films that are maybe more traditional. They are films that are more experimental. They are films about important issues and international issues. They are films about issues in the United States. There’s also films that are about grief and lived experiences. So it’s less like we are going into it trying to cover certain areas of interest and more like we are going into it appreciating the filmmaking, and paying attention to each film as its own consideration process. At the end of the day, it has to be about the cinematic experience of viewing the film on the screen.”

Foster adds, “The festival may be internationally recognized, but it remains unpretentious. There’s no red carpets, just a focus on great films and great community, and that’s the beauty of it. For example, instead of a big gala, our awards party is a barbecue. It’s very southern and very Durham and full of hospitality.”

In addition Full Frame will feature wide array of panel discussions including four free Speakeasy panel conversations covering an array of craft and industry topics at the Durham Hotel. Director Amir Bar Lev (“My Kid Could Paint That,” “Happy Valley”) is helping to curate this year’s panel discussions, which will be announced two weeks before the start of the festival.

The Full Frame lineup:

1489 / Armenia (Director: Shoghakat Vardanyan; Producer: Shoghakat Vardanyan)

Over two years, filmmaker Shoghakat Vardanyan documented her parents and herself, waiting to hear about the fate of her twenty-one-year-old brother Soghomon, a musician, who disappeared in the front line of the brutal 2020 Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) War. Filming with her phone, Vardanyan turns her family’s grief into a film as an act of escape.

As the family tries to settle into their new home, we witness their everyday moments—both sorrowful and joyful—along the way.

Five eight-year-olds found the imaginary world ‘George-Peterland’: a dreamy forest land with cute chickens everywhere, to which one can travel by just closing their eyes. When the school interferes and rules take over the imaginary world, it becomes a nightmare.

Hollywoodgate / Germany, United States (Director: Ibrahim Nash’at; Producers: Talal Derki, Odessa Rae, Shane Boris)

When the United States withdrew from its twenty-year “forever war” in Afghanistan, the Taliban retook control of the ravaged country and immediately found an American base loaded with weaponry—a portion of the over $7 billion in U.S. armaments still in the country. Unprecedented and audacious, director Ibrahim Nash’at’s Hollywoodgate spends a year inside Afghanistan following the Taliban as they take possession of the cache America left behind—and transform from a fundamentalist militia into a heavily armed military regime.

For many years, he has travelled around the city with his trolley to gather tons of miscellaneous papers and objects of all kinds, thus filling his flat with labyrinthine chaos. He is said to have “the Diogenes syndrome.” He is gifted with vertiginous erudition and witty humor. As the filmmaker helps him with his home, a friendship forms.  North American Premiere

In the eyes of an artificial mind, the last thirty years of David Rumsey—spent amassing one of the biggest historical maps collections in the world he secretly calls his poem—seem like an unexplainable quest. A Stranger Quest follows him on a road trip confronting the ghosts of his past and the end inching ever closer.

Stud Country / United States (Directors: Lina Abascal, Alexandra Kern; Producers: Lina Abascal, Alexandra Kern)

Stud Country is the largest queer country western line dancing night in America, continuing a little-known 50+ year tradition in Los Angeles. Despite its success and fiercely committed community, due to gentrification, the event is set to lose its venue.  World Premiere
