How to Travel From London to Oxford by Train, Bus, and Car

oxford to london travel

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

The University of Oxford is famous as one of the most prestigious schools in the world, but the town itself has much more to offer than just this 12th-century college. Oxford is one of the most popular towns to visit from London, since they're separated by less than 60 miles and are easily connected by bus and train. This quaint city makes a great day trip if you need a break from the hectic grind of London, offering visitors another look into English life outside of its largest and capital city.

The train is the most convenient method of transportation from London to Oxford, but this can get pricey unless you buy tickets in advance. The bus takes a little longer, but it's still a quick ride and brings you from city center to city center at an affordable price. It's also a quick drive, but you're better off taking public transit rather than dealing with London traffic and parking.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From London to Oxford?

The bus is the cheapest way to get from London to Oxford, with service available via National Express or Oxford Tube starting at roughly $7. Buses leave from both companies all throughout the day, always starting at Victoria Station and arriving in Oxford at Gloucester Green Station. It's recommended to buy tickets online in advance, guaranteeing you a seat on the bus you want. However, tickets can also be purchased directly from the driver and buses leave so frequently that you shouldn't have a problem finding a seat.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From London to Oxford?

For just a few pounds more than the bus, you can catch a train from Paddington or Marylebone stations in London to Oxford Station. Most travelers would consider the train a more comfortable option than the bus, and it also gets you into Oxford in just under an hour—about 40 minutes faster than the bus. Fares start at roughly $13 for a one-way ticket but get more expensive as the travel date gets closer and tickets sell out, so it pays to make reservations in advance (last-minute tickets usually cost $35 or more). If you're flexible with your travel date and time, look around at different times of the day and a day before and after as well. Trains depart to Oxford about every 15 minutes, so flexibility is crucial for finding the best deals.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

If you have your own car, driving from London to Oxford takes about an hour and a half in ideal conditions. However, with all of the traffic in London, it can often be much longer. The drive between London and Oxford is a popular commuter route, and rush hour time is especially difficult. Unless you plan on road tripping through other parts of Britain after Oxford, driving yourself isn't likely worth the headache of having your own vehicle. Parking in London and Oxford is expensive and complicated, and you'll also have to pay tolls on this relatively short drive. Oxford is small enough to explore on foot, and you'll be happier if you stick to the train or bus.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Oxford?

If you're looking for ideal weather, the summer months are without a doubt the best time to visit Oxford. From June to August, expect sunny days and comfortably warm temperatures, perfect for walking around and exploring all that the town has to offer. The summer months are also, unsurprisingly, the high season. The city will be much more crowded with visitors and hotel rooms are more likely to be booked if you plan on spending the night. Winter is cold, windy, and wet, but because of the temperate climate, snow is uncommon. April and May are also a great time to visit, not only because the weather is finally beginning to warm up but because the city hosts all types of events in the spring—such as the Oxford Jazz Festival, Wood Festival, English Music Festival, Chocolate Festival, Oxfordshire Artweeks, and Dorchester-on-Thames Festival.

What Is There to Do in Oxford?

Oxford is a town full of old English charm, perfect for a day trip from London or a relaxing weekend out of the big city. This fascinating city is home to the world's oldest English language university, and many of the colleges are open to the public or offer tours of their historic buildings. Oxford also has one of the world's oldest public museums, the Ashmolean , which is free to enter. Stop for a pint at one of the city's atmospheric pubs, like the Turf Tavern or the Eagle and Child Pub—once frequented by writers such as Tolkein and C.S. Lewis. Fans of the Harry Potter series will come across sites all over the city used in the films, and a Harry Potter walking tour is the best way to find them all.

Damage to a bus which crashed into a building destroying its facia

A London bus smashed into a building this morning sending broken glass and splinters of debris into the street.

The yellow double decker collided with a shop front nestled between branches of All Bar One and Costa Coffee next to a junction in Soho.

Initial reports said the building it hit was a pub, however it appears to be the site of the OHSH Projects art space.

Photos show how the windscreen of the number 8 bus to Bow Church shattered on impact. The vehicle went partially through a window, leaving the building’s facia destroyed.

It had to be towed away from New Oxford Street this afternoon after the crash around 10.10am.

Multiple fire engines can also be seen in video footage from the main road, with the street cordoned off with tape.

Scientist Mark Arby, who was walking by and took photos of what happened, told Metro.co.uk the street was busy with traffic and pedestrians.

‘I walk that way most days and it seemed the same as normal until people started to gather and sirens from the emergency services started,’ he said.

‘We treated two people. We took one patient to hospital and discharged the other at the scene.’

London Fire Brigade said that the crash had not let to widespread injury.

A spokesperson said: ‘Firefighters are at the scene of a road traffic collision on New Oxford Street in Soho.

‘One double decker bus collided into the front of a building.

‘One man left the bus before the Brigade’s arrival and is being assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

‘Road closures are in place and people are advised to avoid the area at this time.’

Florida creep flew 4,000 miles to camp outside Oxford University in hopes astrophysicist would ‘be his Valentine’: report

A Florida man flew more than 4,000 miles to camp outside an astrophysicist’s office at Oxford University in hopes that she’d be his “valentine,” a court heard.

Augustine Lopez, 47, learned about Dr. Rebecca Smethurst through her YouTube channel and decided to travel to the famed university after sending her an array of messages on social media and to her email in hopes of meeting the scientist, according to The Telegraph.

He even had his bags sent to her office after landing at Heathrow Airport in London on Feb. 13.

“Mr. Lopez came to this country specifically with one sole purpose. That sole purpose was to stalk Dr. Rebecca Smethurst,” Prosecutor Kellie Enever told the Oxford Crown Court. “Mr. Lopez does not know her. All we say he knows about Dr. Smethurst is what he has acquired from social media.”

Lopez traveled to the foreign country with no hotel reservation and with a can of mace — which is illegal in the UK — according to the British outlet.

Prosecutors alleged the Melbourne, Florida native caused the Oxford researcher “serious distress and alarm” and his “unwanted contact” was “unsettling and impacted on her daily life,” The Telegraph said.

Lopez allegedly tried to enter her office, but was stopped by the receptionist. Afterward, she allegedly got a message on Instagram that said: “I found the building, but not you.”

Another message she discovered a month afterward, read: “I owe you a delightful time, be my Valentine.”

“The messages made me feel a mix of fear and revulsion. My skin was crawling that this person thought that I wanted to read this,” an emotional Smethurst told the court, according to The Telegraph. “It felt like such an invasion of my own life and privacy.”

She testified she has never met Lopez before.

Re-creation of Roald Dahl's writing shed, at the Roald Dahl Museum

It's World Book Day on Thursday 7 March, when children across the UK and Republic of Ireland are each given a book token and are encouraged to go to school dressed as their favourite characters.

For a change, why not celebrate World Book Day in a more active way, with a day out at one of these story-related museums.

Jane Austen's House, Hampshire

Jane Austen moved to this red-brick cottage in the village of Chawton in 1809 with her mother and sister after a period of housing uncertainty. The resulting "sense of security… seems to be very important to Austen to be creative", Lizzie Dunford, director of the museum, told the Financial Times (FT). Placed by a window, "an unassuming, small table is an emotional trigger for visitors", she said. It is, of course, where the author "wrote or revised her six famous novels". Adding "further flavour to Austen's life and work" are the museum's temporary exhibitions, said Londonist .

The Story Museum, Oxford

This museum in Oxford celebrates stories in all forms and "explores their enduring power to teach and delight", said The Oxford Magazine . Housed in a former Royal Mail depot, the museum's "labyrinth of galleries" is home to "hands-on exhibits, a wonderfully creative Small Worlds play area for youngsters and a charming cafe", said National Geographic , arranged around a cobbled courtyard. The space "brings the imaginative landscape to life, from listening to fable-spouting trees in the whispering wood gallery to pushing musky fur coats aside and venturing through the wardrobe into the glittering realm of Narnia".

Discover Children's Story Centre, London

At this interactive museum for under-11s in Stratford, children can play inside and out. In the garden there's a trail based on "The Storm Whale", and inside is "The Box Rocket where kids can board a toy rocket ship before arriving on a strange world where they must undertake an important mission", said The Sun . As well as the exhibitions, there are "two floors of magical worlds where they can creep through caves, hidden ships and play on the puppet castle". This stimulating environment features "places to hide in, treasure to seek and the chance to fire young imaginations to create their own stories", said Time Out .

Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, Buckinghamshire

"It's swizzfigglingly, flushbunkingly gloriumptious" – so says the description painted on the museum's frontage in the village of Great Missenden, where Dahl lived for 36 years writing stories in his shed. The museum is "partly about the life of Roald Dahl, and partly about the process of creative writing", said Bradt Guides . "Families can come face to face with Fantastic Mr Fox in a fun exhibition, measure up to Quentin Blake's illustrations and discover Roald Dahl's Writing Hut – the birthplace of his famous characters," said SheerLuxe .

Seven Stories: the National Centre for Children's Books, Newcastle upon Tyne

Occupying seven storeys in a converted Victorian flour mill is this children's literature museum, where "the UK's storytelling pot bubbles over", said National Geographic. The museum is dedicated to telling stories of migration. On display are original artwork from "The Tiger Who Came to Tea", and the kitchen that belonged to its author, Judith Kerr, which also featured in "Mog the Forgetful Cat". There are also unpublished early manuscripts by Michael Morpurgo and a family-friendly cafe overlooking the Ouseburn River.

Birnam Arts: Beatrix Potter, Perthshire

Along with "an eclectic programme of live music, theatre, comedy and discussion" plus an arts hub, the centre now holds a permanent exhibition on Beatrix Potter, said The Herald . She's most associated with the Lake District but Potter holidayed here regularly from the age of four, and this exhibition is "a celebration of all the links between this region of Scotland and the part it played in shaping the creative mind of a young genius", said Scottish Field . It was while on holiday here that Potter wrote "The tale of Peter Rabbit" in a letter to her former governess's son. There's also a "a fantastic café-bistro serving up delicious local produce and fabulous home-baking", said The Herald. The building itself played a part in inspiring Potter, being home to a library "where she would borrow books – her signature can be found in records still held there".

Pooh Corner, East Sussex

A.A. Milne lived in Hartfield, on the edge of Ashdown Forest, known to Pooh fans as Hundred Acre Wood. And at the edge of the forest is a "tearoom every Winnie-the-Pooh fan will want to visit", said Surrey Live . The tearoom has a small museum dedicated to Winnie-the-Pooh, but you'll want to explore the locations made famous by the books, including "Pooh Sticks Bridge, Galleon's Lap, Roo's Sandy Pit, the Heffalump Trap, and the Enchanted Place in the forest" nearby. And it has remained a forest "rather than a theme park", said Londonist , "with the landmarks left in a completely natural environment, the only clue to their significance being the occasional wooden signpost".
