Mañana Y Siempre: How Karol G Has Made The World Mas Bonito

'Mañana Será Bonito' may have been the vehicle for Karol G's massive year, but the 2024 GRAMMY nominee for Best Música Urbana Album has been making strides in reggaeton, urbano and the music industry at large for a long time.

For Karol G , 2023 was a watershed year. Her fourth album, Mañana Será Bonito , peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 and took home the golden gramophone for Album Of The Year at the Latin GRAMMYs . Her many milestones also included a Rolling Stone cover, and signing with Interscope. At the 2024 GRAMMYs , Mañana Será Bonito is nominated for Best Música Urbana Album.

The Colombian singer and songwriter was suddenly everywhere in 2023, but this moment is the culmination of a long, steady rise. Karol G has been on the scene for some time, and changing it for the better just by being who she is: an extremely talented woman making waves in a genre still dominated by men.

Karol G has been a pivotal figure in the world of urbano since 2017, when she collaborated with Bad Bunny on the Latin trap single "Ahora Me Llama." It was a transformative moment for both artists, whose careers took off precipitously after its release. The track led Ms. G’s aptly titled debut album, Unstoppable , which went multi-platinum and peaked at No. 2 on both the U.S. Top Latin Albums and U.S. Latin Rhythm Albums charts. At the 2018 Latin GRAMMYs, Karol was awarded Best New Artist .

2024 GRAMMYs: Explore More & Meet The Nominees

Although she came out of the gate in an unstoppable fashion, Karol G's chart-topping debut was the result of years of touring and recording. The artist born Carolina Giraldo Navarro was no overnight success.

She started singing as a teenager growing up in Medellín and, after signing to Colombia's Flamingo Records, chose the name Karol G and began releasing music. Early on, she flew to Miami for a meeting with Universal Records, but they chose not to sign her on the basis that a woman would not be successful making reggaeton — a severe miscalculation, that belies female pioneers and a blossoming roster of contemporary acts .

Thankfully, she ignored them. A year after "Ahora Me Llama" and Unstoppable , Karol G won her first Latin GRAMMY.

The star’s determination makes her a role model, but Karol G's career has also been defined by an inspiring integrity around her principles and artistic vision. By now, it is a well-known anecdote that she turned down the song "Sin Pijama" because it references marijuana use. Karol does not smoke, so the lyrics would not have been authentic to her as a person, or as an artist.

This authenticity has doubtless been key to Karol G's success. Rather than try to fit an established mold, she brings a uniquely sunny swagger and sporty style to reggaeton. She projects a powerful and feminine energy, and her music often expresses a healthy sense of sexual independence and self-empowerment. This is an intentional part of her message, especially to her female fans.

"They teach us it’s wrong to celebrate ourselves for something we have," she told Rolling Stone of her musical messaging. "And it’s not. We have to be the first ones to give ourselves credit."

Like early collaborator Bad Bunny, Karol G is able to reach a global audience without having to change the language she sings in, her genre of choice, or her messages. Case in point: One of her 2023 accomplishments was becoming the first Latina to headline a global stadium tour, and the highest-grossing Latin touring artist of the year.

She also became the first Latina to headline Lollapalooza and, in between record-breaking tour dates, saw her song "WATATI" featured on Barbie The Album . (The soundtrack is nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media at the 66th GRAMMY Awards .)

In November, she closed out her big year with a sweep of the Latin GRAMMY s: Mañana Será Bonito received the award for Best Música Urbana Album and Album Of The Year; her Shakira collab "TQG" took home the golden gramophone for Best Urban Fusion/Performance. When she accepted her award for Best Música Urbana Album, Karol exclaimed, "How cool is it for a woman to win this?"

Karol G’s wins made up a large part of an awards ceremony where women won big:  Shakira won Song Of The Year for her collaboration with Bizzarap, while Natalia Lafourcade won Record Of The Year and Joaquina took home Best New Artist . This was the first year that women won in all the general categories — something that suggests progress for the Latin music industry. The last time a woman won the Latin GRAMMY for Best Música Urbana Album was in 2013, when Spanish rapper Mala Rodríguez took home the award for Bruja.

Watching the Latin GRAMMYs this year, it was easy to forget that women still have a long way to go to achieve parity with their male counterparts in the music industry. If you lost sight of that, the year-end Latin charts would bring you back to reality: Of the top 50 tracks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, 11 primarily featured women, but six of those tracks belonged to Karol G. Karol’s presence matters and she knows it.

Karol G brings a powerful feminine energy to reggaeton and Latin trap, but also an unapologetic feminism. While this is explicit in her music, it's also clear in the creative partnerships she makes. She’s had many high profile collaborations with male artists, but just as many with a diverse roster of female artists from reggaeton OG Ivy Queen ("Leyendas") to Latin fusion pop singer Kali Uchis ("Me Tengo Que Ir," "Labios Mordidos"). In an arena so dominated by male artists, each collaboration with another woman is meaningful, but her collaborations with rising artists, such as Young Miko — who appears on the song "Dispo" from Karol’s Bichota Season — truly make a difference.

Artists like Karol G increase the range of possibilities for artists in their wake, and for anyone in the music industry who flouts narrow expectations. Karol G knows that her victories have larger implications, and this eye toward the future has helped her reach unprecedented heights. "I understand how hard it is [for women to break through] because of how hard it was for me,"she recently told Billboard .

It wasn't easy for Karol G to get where she is today, but she has been opening doors for others — women, artists in reggaeton, artists in urbano and others —  every step of the way. From here on, the title of her album is ringing more and more prescient, and that’s mas bonito .

2024 GRAMMY Nominations: See The Full Nominees List

Edgar Barrera, The Songwriter Behind 2023's Top Latin Hits, Shares How He Remains Grounded Amidst Success

Edgar Barrera is known for building musical bridges, blending unexpected genres and enabling fruitful collaborations. At the 2024 GRAMMYs, the prolific songwriter and producer is the only Latino nominated for Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical.

The life of producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera was shaped by cultural dichotomy. Born in McAllen, Texas, and raised between the Lone Star state and the Mexican border town of Miguel Alemán, Barrera spent his days connecting cultures and languages, making a space for himself.

"I was born on the border. I'm always trying to adapt to Mexican or American culture, growing up in the middle of those two worlds," Barrera tells GRAMMY.com. "This is what I always end up doing in the songs and with the artists I work with, I adapt to them, I adapt to their world, I learn [from them]."

This duality and his innate code-switching ability defined his essence as a musician. In the music industry, Barrera is known among artists as a great bridge-builder between stars. He forges unexpected collaborations and blends genres in effortless ways.

For example, "Un x100to", the smasher collaboration between Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny , became one of the biggest Latin songs of 2023. It won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Regional Mexican Song, climbed to the top of Spotify's global chart, and made its way to Billboard’s Hot 100’s Top 10.

The single is one of nine songs that has earned Barrera a nomination for Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical at the 2024 GRAMMYs. He is the only Latino in this group and has been nominated for all Spanish-language songs. "It means that Latinos are breaking those barriers and that Latin music is important to the industry," Barrera says of the nomination. "To be considered in that category is already a victory. I feel I am paving the way for a Latin songwriter to be in future nominations."

The nod came days before he received the inaugural Latin GRAMMY for Songwriter Of The Year . At the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs, Barrera received 13 nominations and won three awards, including Producer Of The Year, and was featured in a collaborative performance with Camilo, Manuel Carrasco, and IZA.

Ahead of the 66th GRAMMY Awards, Barrera discusses how his upbringing shaped his career and creative process, as well as the importance of recognition for Latinos in the music industry.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

2023 has been an excellent year for you. What are you the most grateful for?

It has been a great year in my career. I have to be thankful for life and to God. I’m grateful to say that I make a living from this.

This is the only thing I know how to do; I am not good at anything other than making music. It is a blessing that people connect with the songs you create. What gives me the most satisfaction is knowing that people are enjoying, connecting, and experiencing the songs [I've worked on].

What did it mean to win the inaugural Songwriter Of The Year award at the Latin GRAMMYs?

I didn't think much about whether I was going to win or not. I was feeling happier and more excited because the Latin GRAMMYs were creating a category for those behind [the songs].

I said it that day they gave me the award; sometimes, the songwriter is the one who suffers the most in the entire music pyramid of how the industry is structured. The songwriter is the last one who gets paid and often doesn't get as much credit. For me, everything starts with a song. Without a good song, the artist is unknown; without a good song, the producer is unknown.

Music starts with a good song you can sing with just a guitar. That's what I like to do. I write the song, have it on guitar and vocals, and see what genre fits the best. That's why I always switch genres; I don't like to limit myself by saying that I only make urban, pop, or Mexican music. I'm not following trends but doing what feels right for the song.

What was your reaction upon discovering that you are the only nominee for Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical one competing with Spanish songs at the 2024 GRAMMYs?

I was in Madrid, and even though I knew the GRAMMY nominations were coming up, I wasn’t on top of it because it is usually tough to be nominated for those categories. I didn't expect it.

We had a Zoom with all the composers nominated in that category to get to know each other, and I kept thinking, what am I doing in this Zoom with all these people who write songs in English, country songs, rap songs, or pop songs? Here I am with my songs in Spanish.

I am happy with [the nomination] because it means that Latinos are breaking those barriers and that Latin music is important to the industry. It has become the elephant in the room that you can no longer ignore.

To be considered in that category is already a victory. I feel I am paving the way for a Latin songwriter to be in future nominations. I feel I have some responsibility; I am representing Latinos at an important moment in the industry.

Coming from Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, a town with 20,000 residents with no songwriters or producers, the fact that I can make music and dedicate myself to it is already a victory. Everything is a blessing and feels surreal.

You have been nominated for your work in nine songs. Is there a specific song that has brought you the most satisfaction?

They have all fulfilled something specific. For example, Karol G is a Selena [Quintanilla] fan, and she wanted to make a song in cumbia ["Mi Ex Tenía Razón"], a genre I grew up with. [The song] is like that tribute to my roots. Having an artist as big as Karol G on that song is very special.

In songs like " Un x100to," [a collaboration between] Bad Bunny, and a band like Grupo Frontera from my hometown, [it feels special because] we have many friends and grew up with the same cultural background. Returning to McAllen, Tamaulipas, to support a local group and having one of the biggest songs of the year with one of the biggest artists of the moment is also very special to me. It shows the newcomers that it is possible to reach those places — even coming from the same place we did . I would never have thought that the song would be No. 1 worldwide.

When did you first realize that you had a talent for songwriting?

It has always been my plan. I didn't go to school; I've never had a plan B. I've always been very stubborn in what I do.

I discovered I could write songs and liked writing songs when I was 15. I moved to Miami and started working from the bottom, lifting cables in a studio. I had to serve coffee. I went through the entire process to enjoy what is happening now. It didn't happen overnight.

I've never let it get to my head. I have no recognition, paintings, or awards if you go to my studio. I mean nothing; there is none of that. I don't like to think about that. I'm in my house right now, and you don't see anything on the walls; they're blank. I want to work as I have since day 1.

You have won 21 Latin GRAMMYs. Where do you keep the awards?

Those awards are at my parents' house. I send everything there. I don't have any awards at my house. My wife also tells me that our home is a place to disconnect, not to continue thinking about work. That helps me to stay rooted.

To know that the day before, I could have been with the biggest artist in the world, I could be with Shakira , Karol G or Benito, whoever I am currently working with, but when I come home, I feel that I am an ordinary person who has the blessing of working with the greatest artists of the moment. Realizing that also resets you, it keeps me grounded.

Did maintaining a lower profile help you in your career as a songwriter?

I am very quiet and shy. I express myself better by writing than by speaking. I like that people gradually discover who is behind the songs. I like that some people find that I wrote a song, and they make the connection, like the movie's endings, when you start connecting all the dots. I don't like telling people I did this or that.

When working with an artist, I am very clear that I am an instrument; I work for them. I don't have any ego. When working with artists, I listen to them and help them translate what they want to say in the songs. That is my job, and I try to be a tool for them; I don't want to be the protagonist.

You are known for your ability to make unexpected connections between artists and topliners; where did this talent come from?

It comes very naturally to me; I do it unconsciously. For example, in the collaboration between Carin León and Maluma , ["Según Quién"], I ended up being the person who connected them. In their case, I sent the song to Carin's team and introduced them about a week later. We organized a meal, and I made them get to know each other before recording the song.

In [ "De Vuelta Pa' La Vuelta" ] by Daddy Yankee with Marc Anthony , I was with Yankee in the studio. Yankee told me he wanted to do something different, and I showed him this salsa song. He likes it and tells me he wants to record it and do it in salsa. I connected Yankee with Marc — two legends who know each other, but I will gladly make that [musical] connection if I can.

That is part of why I created my record label, Border Kid Records, which is like a border that connects [two places], like the bridge between the United States and Mexico; I am a bridge between the artists.

You are a big fan of the Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. What have you learned from his career?

I am Max Martin 's No. 1 fan. To me, he is the greatest of all time, and what I like about him is that he is not bragging about his achievements.

It felt like such a great discovery when I found out how he was. I told my friends you like this song because this songwriter made it, so you are not a fan of the artist; you are a fan of the songwriter.

I dreamed that one day, my songs would have a similar effect in Latin music and the way people would discover me. He has always kept a shallow profile. I'm not comparing myself to him at all, but something that he has and that I also do unconsciously is constantly collaborating with people; we are always nourishing ourselves with new songwriters and producers.

I always check Max Martin's credits and see him working with new people. And that's all about not believing that you know everything but learning and always listening to new people that has something new to say.

What advice can you give to songwriters or singers starting their careers?

Always be authentic and do not follow trends. I differentiated myself from the songwriters and producers when I started because I didn't use many bad words [in my songs]. I always wanted to avoid jumping on that bandwagon, following a trend.

It is about doing things differently and creating your own trends. I am one of those who make a bachata or a merengue; when a merengue is not even trending, you make it a trend by [picking] the right artist and song.

What is Edgar Barrera's mark in music?

My lyrics are simple, honest, straightforward, and up-to-date; that's my trademark. Production-wise, if you hear a real instrument or a musician playing live, guitars, or things like that, that's always my mark.

2023 In Review: 5 Trends That Defined Latin Music

2023 was a transformative year for Latin music: Música mexicana expanded globally; urbano music continued its dominance and innovative sounds broke boundaries. Read on for five trends showcasing the breadth of Latin music's influence.

2022 was the year of Rosalía ’s Motomami and Bad Bunny ’s Un Verano Sin Ti — two groundbreaking albums that expanded both the artistic scope and mainstream appeal of Latin music. How do you top that?

As it turns out, 2023 had a number of surprises in store: the emergence of música mexicana on an international scale, but also the further globalization of Latin sounds and new developments in urbano music, which continues to gain in influence and sophistication. It was also a particularly prolific year — with hundreds of singles, EPs and albums expanding the scope of Latin across genres and formats.

Here are some of the notable trends that emerged during the past 12 months.

Finally, Música Mexicana Gets The Chance To Shine

Reggaetón and urbano were at the forefront of the Latin music tsunami that began to take hold of the entire planet a good three years ago. During that time, many insiders pondered if the huge field of so-called regional Mexican music would ever enjoy such levels of exposure. Turns out there was nothing regional about it.

Far from stagnating, the genre evolved with the rise of the sparse, melancholy sound known as sad sierreño, and the swagger of hip-hop informing the zeitgeist of young artists like Natanael Cano and Junior H.

2023 will be forever remembered as the year when música mexicana connected with the world at large, and it happened mostly through one song: " Ella Baila Sola ," the collaboration between Jalisco singer Peso Pluma and Cali group Eslabón Armado — a tune whose spiraling groove is so buoyant and infectious, it transcends borders. The subversive duet of Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera on mega-hit "un x100to" didn’t hurt either, and the movement gained strength with Peso Pluma’s excellent third LP, as well as the talents of young stars such as Fuerza Regida, Gabito Ballesteros and Yahritza y Su Esencia .

When It Comes To Latin Rock, Argentina Is Still At The Forefront

From Charly García and Luis Alberto Spinetta to Soda Stereo and Babasónicos, Argentina boasts a fierce tradition for generating legendary rock albums. Even though the South American nation has embraced the present with such urbano stars as Bizarrap , Duki and Nicki Nicole, there will always be a place of honor reserved for good old fashioned rock’n’roll in Argentina’s clubs and recording studios.

2023 was no exception. Hailing from the city of La Plata, Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado released Súper Terror . Their first full length album since 2017's La Síntesis O’Konor , the new LP includes atmospheric ballads like the gorgeous "Medalla de Oro." Another top contender is Tripolar , the third effort by Mendoza indie darlings Usted Señalemelo.

Also of note: Lo Más Cercano a Caer , the stunning debut by Nenagenix. Fronted by singer Martina Sampietro, the band has dreamed up a ferocious collection of songs with inspired touches of grunge and shoegaze.

Pop Stardom Is A Young Artist’s Game…

Popular music has always reflected the combustion and adrenaline of youth, but the immediacy of the digital era has heightened this fact. It seems that the transition from self-taught teens uploading their demos in TikTok to fully fledged stars performing at Coachella has become even more rapid.

Some of the most successful Latin artists climbing the 2023 charts have had only a couple of years to transition into pop icon status — and the vulnerability of their emotional state is often expressed in their music. From the reggaetón-fueled erotic narratives of 21 year-old Madrid rapper Quevedo ("PUNTO G") to the bachata-pop warmth of 19 year-old Mexican/American DannyLux ("MI HOGAR," with maye) and the confessional urbano narratives of 22-year-old Argentine vocalist Tiago PZK (the TINI duet "Me Enteré"), many young artists found the global platform where they could freely express their longings and dreams.

...But The Veterans Have Still Plenty To Say

Years of accolades have not dimmed the creative vision of veteran Latin artists. In the case of Juanes , a marital crisis during the pandemic inspired Vida Cotidiana — arguably the Colombian singer’s best album to date. Just listen to the gritty guitar textures of the majestic "Gris" and the spiraling Afro lines of "Cecilia," a sun-is-shining-again duet with Juan Luis Guerra. Vida Cotidiana is nominated for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album alongside Cabra's MARTÍNEZ , Leche De Tigre by Diamante Eléctrico , Natalia Lafourcade 's De Todas Las Flores and EADDA9223 by Fito Paez .

At 46, Shakira finds herself at the top of her game, with major pop culture moments like her Bizarrap collaboration — the most epic revenge song of the year and a Latin GRAMMY winner — and the jagged edges of "TQG," her duet with KAROL G .

Having developed a tradition of recording solo excursions in Paris, Zoé frontman León Larregui explored his hazy psychedelic mystique on PRISMARAMA , the Mexican singer’s excellent — and first self-produced — third outing.

The Urbano Groove May Never Run Out Of Steam

You may think that global audiences would have tired of the ubiquitous reggaetón beat. But the music of Puerto Rico — just like traditional salsa in the ‘70s – has a gravitas that rewards longer attention spans. Fittingly for a genre known for its prolific work ethic, some of the biggest names in urbano released albums in 2023, and none of them disappoint.

One listen to the refined melody of "MÓNACO" — like a reggaetón take on a James Bond theme — is enough to realize that Bad Bunny’s creative streak hasn’t slowed down since he reimagined the Latin pop atlas with Un Verano Sin Ti . Known for his honeyed dance hits, Ozuna put out an EP ( Afro ) and an album ( Cosmo ), including the synth-pop magic of "Vocation," with producer David Guetta .

Last but not least, KAROL G’s MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO demonstrates on luminous tracks like "PROVENZA" and "CAIRO" that her work with fellow Colombian producer Ovy on the Drums is one of the defining artistic partnerships of the decade. MAÑANA is nominated for Best Música Urbana Album at the 2024 GRAMMYs alongside Rauw Alejandro 's SATURNO and Tainy's DATA.

Bad Bunny X 100pre

By Matthew Ismael Ruiz

Rap / Pop/R&B

January 3, 2019

In the first three years of his nascent career, Bad Bunny put out enough singles and did enough guest features to fill out several albums. As an audition for pop superstardom, it’s been impressive. He can adapt to seemingly any style—trap, R&B, reggaeton, bachata, dembow—with a heavy, nasal croon perpetually drenched in Auto-Tune. He became a huge star in 2018, circumventing terrestrial radio and government censorship to become the third-most streamed artist in the world on YouTube . Why does Bad Bunny even need to release an album?

In some ways, X 100pre (a stylization of “por siempre” or “forever”) presents a new Bad Bunny, a bellwether for the new stars of urbano. Like his contemporaries J Balvin and Daddy Yankee , he’s refused to pick a lane or to repress parts of himself that might seem antithetical to an urbano audience historically resistant to deviations from traditional masculinity. He bucks gender norms (wearing cutoff shorts and nail polish ) and uses his massive platform to decry domestic violence. With X 100pre , we’re finally able to see all of these sides of Bad Bunny in a singular statement.

Free of bloated posse cuts and seven-minute remixes, X 100pre ’s guests are expertly calculated. There’s an absolutely filthy low-slung trap beat from global gentrifier Diplo (“200MPH”), a hook in Spanish from Drake (“ Mia ”), a hookah-bar anthem with Dominican dembow don El Alfa (“La Romana”), and even a secret cameo from Latin music’s ultimate crossover artist, Ricky Martin (“Caro”). He’s also parted ways with DJ Luian and Hear This Music, who were instrumental in helping him bridge the gap between the reggaeton OGs and the new-school Latin trap artists. DJ Luian may have helped catapult Bad Bunny from the SoundCloud underground to the YouTube mainstream, but he also prevented him from making an album. Upon X100pre ’s release, he told Beats 1 he “never had the support” to do an LP. It’s a little crazy to think that, even as we witnessed Bad Bunny’s incredible pre-album run, we were watching an artist who felt like he was being held back.

It’s clear, however, the thrill that comes when he’s left to his own devices. X 100pre reveals an artist both proud of and unafraid to tell the truth about where he comes from. On “Estamos Bien,” he brags about driving his Benz through the potholes in Puerto Rico’s poorly maintained roadways, then takes a nostalgia trip for the perreos of yesteryear on “Cuando Perriabas,” which recalls a “party de marquesinas” that should sound familiar to any boricuas from the island.

And even if his reference to the famous missing persons case of Rolandito Salas Jusino (“RLNDT”) feels a bit self-absorbed—“Y no sé si me raptaron o estoy perdido,” he sings, or, “I don’t know if they kidnapped me or if I’m lost”—those feelings of loss and hopelessness are still likely to resonate with anyone who remembers seeing posters with the young boy’s plastered all over the island. He even dabbles in the political: When he questions the logic of closing schools while new trap houses proliferate on “Ser Bichote,” he’s talking directly to La Junta de Control Fiscal .

Most of X 100pre was produced by reggaeton veteran Marcos “ Tainy ” Masís and Roberto Rosado and from a production standpoint, it’s nearly flawless—the lone misstep being the ill-advised foray into pop-punk “Tenemos Que Hablar,” which features a stiffly programmed guitar riff that sounds like it was lifted from the Kidz Bop studio session for “ Since U Been Gone .” But X 100pre ’s high points are numerous, like the two-part, beat-switching jam “La Romana” that expertly marries three genres birthed by Dominicans—bachata, dembow, and Latin trap; or the trap banger/ballad “ Caro ,” which is at once the hardest and softest track on the record.

Bad Bunny’s perspective is decidedly Puerto Rican, but he’s always drawn musical influence from across the diaspora, from Juan Gabriel ’s Mexican boleros and Héctor Lavoe ’s salsa to the Colombian (J Balvin) and Puerto Rican (Daddy Yankee) reggaetoneros and trap stars ( Ozuna ) he’s been collaborating with. And while much has been made of his similarities to Drake’s sad-famous rich-boy aesthetic, it only takes a few seconds of their duet “Mia” to see that the influence flows both ways. The synthesis of this Pan-Latino perspective is difficult to express in any language, yet X 100pre ’s masterful sequencing somehow manages to weave a diverse arrangement of styles into a coherent statement, one that represents one of the most honest depictions of urbano music. Because while Latinidad might consist of a collection of distinct and vibrant cultures, they’re in constant conversation—from América Central to del Sur, from the Caribbean to the barrios in the states. X 100pre is what that conversation sounds like.

Bad Bunny Mastered the Hit Single. With ‘X100PRE,’ He Arrives as an Album Artist

By Elias Leight

Elias Leight

Has there ever been an artist who needed to release an album less than Bad Bunny ? For three years now, this Puerto Rican star, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio , has been gushing hit singles like a broken fire hydrant. His voice, low and droning, is inimitable and absurdly adaptable, equally at home in stadium-ready trap (“Diles”), weapons-grade reggaeton (“Te Bote”), sunny cumbia (“Mayores”), seduce-your-girl R&B (“Si Tu Novio Te Deja Sola”), club-pop missiles (“Mia”), grungy rock ( “Sensualidad” at the Latin Grammys ), salsa (“Mala Y Peligrosa”), dejected piano balladry (“Amorfoda”) and choral tropical house, a fusion he might have invented (“Estamos Bien”). Many artists master at most one style; at age 24, Bad Bunny already commands multitudes.

So his debut, X100PRE , at first seems like an odd concession to the old-school from an artist who made old-school look thoroughly obsolete — if singles are enough to get you into the studio with Drake , why bother with a full-length? But X100PRE is everything you could possibly want from a debut album: Plenty of the stuff that initially brought Bad Bunny fame along with some impressively executed forays into new styles — no small feat, considering how many genres he has already infiltrated.

X100PRE seesaws between two modes: Near-invincible levels of swagger and utter despondence. “I do not go to stores, because I own the mall/ I’m Cristiano after putting in a goal/ I have French speaking in Spanish,” Bad Bunny sings in “Otra Noche en Miami,” a propulsive, brittle Eighties pop record that could play equally well after Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” or Taylor Swift’s “Style.” But much of that bravado is missing in “Tenemos Que Hablar,” a totally unexpected pop-punk cut. “I hate your messages, when you say we have to talk,” Bad Bunny sings.

This dynamic plays out again and again. “ I break the rules and I repair them,” Bad Bunny brags in “Caro,” the type of airy, triumphant trap record that sounds best at ear-splitting volume. Then in the gorgeously brooding “RLNDT,” he is lost at sea, a true chico dark in bad need of a pep talk: “Tears leave no trace, so I do not leave a trace.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Bad Bunny worked primarily with the reggaeton hitmaker Tainy — the same beat-genius behind “Estamos Bien” — on X100PRE , and the results are frequently breathtaking. “Ni Bien Na Mal” is rugged rap until the end, when it resolves with a handsome string-section and a wind-chime sound that would lull your baby to sleep. Those unexpected guitars from “Tenemos Que Hablar” return more subtly in the second half of “Como Antes,” suggesting Bad Bunny might have planted the seeds of a whole new genre, Latin -trap-punk-pop.

A different sort of guitar riff, acoustic and prickly, boosts “La Romana,” which initially sounds like a trap cousin to J Balvin’s “Reggaeton” (another Tainy production). But then the dynamite Dominican rapper El Alfa shows up for a breathless, full-tilt dembow cut. When he collaborated with Cardi B recently on “Mi Miami,” the two were criticized for eschewing the pummeling dembow that made El Alfa a star; he did not make the same mistake when in the studio with Bad Bunny.

The other big names on X100PRE aside from El Alfa — and Drake, since the October single “Mia” reappears as the last track — are Diplo and Ricky Martin , who both carry themselves admirably. Diplo put together the beat for “200 MPH,” a pitch-perfect trap hit as potent as anything coming out of Atlanta; this should be played on both RapCaviar and major hip-hop radio stations, though both treat Spanish-language hip-hop as window-dressing. (If “I Like It” fits your rotation, there are plenty of other Latin trap songs that should also make the cut.) “Caro” works in a similar mode to “200 MPH,” until Martin shows up to echo Bad Bunny during a lovely interlude — a pretty ballad strong enough to be an entire song on its own.

It’s a healthy time for Latin pop. The great artists, a group that includes J Balvin, Rosalía and Ozuna, are putting out massive global hits while also crafting meticulous, considered, genre-hopping albums; these singers are versatile in a way that makes many  Anglo artists seem monochromatic, and they make that versatility look not just stylish, but essential to vital artistry. Bad Bunny conquered the singles game with ease. On  X100PRE, he cements his place among the elite in Latin pop — and in pop music writ large.

On Saturday, April 2, I attended the second out of three “El Último Tour del Mundo” shows at the FTX Arena in Miami. For context, I purchased the tickets almost a year ago, meaning that I had one year to mentally prepare for one of the best nights of my life.

Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been Spotify’s most-streamed artist for the past two years. The Puerto Rican artist currently holds the No. 1 tour globally, according to Bloomberg, with Saturday night’s show alone being the “highest-grossing single night concert” in the FTX Arena’s history.

Bad Bunny performs at FTX Arena on April 2

If it was up to me, I would have been there all day if it meant a chance to catch a glimpse of Bad Bunny before the show. Doors opened at 7 p.m. and tickets advertised a concert start time of 8 p.m. Nonetheless, big-name performers are notorious for starting late. During past appearances, Bad Bunny was taking the stage around 9:30 p.m.

Ultimately, I arrived around 7:45 p.m. The line to purchase merchandise was surprisingly not as long as I thought it would be. What wasn’t surprising were the eyebrow-raising prices of the products, with one hoodie going for $130.

By 8:30 p.m, I made it to my seat. This is one of my favorite parts of the concert-going experience. The pictures of the FTX Arena from section 106, row 12 did not do the view from my seat any justice.

In the center of the arena was a SEMI-TRUCK. Coinciding with the album cover of “El Último Tour del Mundo,” that semi-truck served as Bad Bunny’s stage. Think Transformers.

The entrance to Miami's FTX Arena ahead of Bad Bunny's performance on April 2

I had the pleasure of attending the “X100PRE” tour in Fort Myers and Tampa. The stage was in the shape of a cross, but its movement was limited. Therefore, I didn’t have my hopes set too high.

Boy, was I wrong.

Around 9:45 p.m., the lights cut out. The stage, truck or whatever you want to call it started moving toward the center. “EL MUNDO ES MÍO” started to play. Slowly but surely, Bad Bunny emerged onto the top of the truck.

Sporting a monochrome pink outfit with pink sunglasses to match, the global phenomenon stood on top of the truck for almost two minutes, as the crowd went wild chanting his name and screaming… Michael Jackson Super Bowl halftime show style.

Soon the audience was jamming out to hits from the Grammy-award winning (as of Sunday, April 4) album “El Último Tour del Mundo,” including “BOOKER T” and “LA NOCHE DE ANOCHE.”

About one hour into the show, Bad Bunny disappeared into the darkness and a transitional video appeared on the levitating screens.

The video featured the 12-year-old actor Adam Blasco Monrouzeau, the star of multiple visualizers for Bad Bunny’s “YHLQMDLG” album. Shortly thereafter, Bad Bunny reappeared onto the stage with “Si Veo a Tu Mamá.”

bad bunny x100pre tour

Songs like “La Difícil” and “La Santa” allowed fans to finally rejoice as they heard the tracks live, since the COVID-19 pandemic robbed “YHLQMDLG” from the world tour that it deserved.

Before he moved into some of his hit singles, such as “Lo Siento BB :/” and “Yonaguni,” Bad Bunny asked fans to help him out by singing at the top of their lungs. The sold-out audience replied in typical Miami fashion. My ears are still ringing and my voice is coming back slowly but surely.

Despite being on tour since February, Benito’s voice sounded strong and confident. Much better than the voice I heard on the “X100PRE” tour.

He closed the show with banger after banger. From “Yo Perreo Sola,” to “Safaera” and then an emotional close with “DÁKITI,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Chart, Bad Bunny provided a memorable experience with moments that were so personal, you couldn’t help but feel like he was speaking right at you.

From the lights and the visuals, to the dancers and the band (it could be argued that there were moments when they stole the show), I can honestly say that this was the best concert of my life. Seeing Bad Bunny on his “X100PRE” tour was amazing, but this time was different. On Saturday night, I got to witness Bad Bunny as a performer.

On Sunday night, fans were left anxiously waiting as the No. 1 artist in the world promised to announce his upcoming album’s release date after wrapping up the tour with his third show at the FTX Arena.

Bad Bunny will bring his “World’s Hottest Tour” to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on Aug. 12 and 13. DJs Alesso and Diplo are set to make appearances at these shows, respectively.

bad bunny x100pre tour

Saturday night was hands-down one of the best nights of my life. I will never forget it. The post-concert depression is #real. Luckily, I know that there is much more to come from el Conejo Malo. August 13 cannot come fast enough.

Until then, I will be eagerly refreshing my social media channels for any sign of the singer’s highly-anticipated studio album. This summer will absolutely be a Bad Bunny summer.

Bad Bunny X100 Pre Tour

Content Creation, Production Design, Show Direction, VJ

When XiteLabs principals  Vello Virkhaus and Greg Russell were first contacted by Nino Jimenez and Max Perez of the Buena Vibra Group , they were truly honored. Their job was to collaborate in creation of a new visual show which  incorporates live camera effects, high-end animations, live visual performances, and production design. These elements were then seamlessly wrapped into Bad Bunny’s X100 Pre Tour.

The run of Bad Bunny performances kicked off with the most grand festival of Latino music in the world, Vina Del Mar in Chile . This epic multi country TV broadcast was Xite’s first official run featuring visual art and notch technology.

The 360 tour started off in San Juan, Puerto Rico where 25-year-old Latin trap star Bad Bunny rocked the sold out shows .  Each of the shows at José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum drew more than 18,000 attendees. The artist, born Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, is a rapper at the top of the music charts. His unique style of música urbana (urban contemporary music) often features collaborations with some of the world’s biggest artists including Drake, Cardi B, J Balvin and Becky G.

Our team jumped in and created over 35 songs worth of original visual art and real time notch camera effects for the 360 immersive experience. The artwork was created by a large group of talented artists on a very tight time table. The XiteLabs team developed interactive camera effects using Notch to seamlessly integrate Bad Bunny into the visual themes.

Concurrently, the XiteLabs team designed an entirely new visual show. The Xite team created an original sculptural video set piece of a giant stylized eye.  Matt Guertin working with a tight team from PRG and All Access fabricated and designed custom LED mounts, LED set pieces, Custom LED mounts, and a giant LED rotating pupil. The piece was featured at Coachella Music & Arts Festival on weekend 1 and 2 as a signature part of Bad Bunny’s main stage performance look.  Bad Bunny appeared on the Coachella livestream to millions of viewers, emerging from the rotating pupil of the giant video eye before dropping right into his hit track “Ni Bien Ni Mal.”

XiteLabs’ custom resolume and notch media servers allowed for adaptive and rapidly responsive visual performances in the live touring environment.

Here is what various media outlets had to say about XiteLabs’ work @Coachella :

Bad Bunny

Feliz Noche Buena! Bad Bunny finally released his full-length debut, X100pre , on Christmas Eve and it’s everything you were hoping for. The Puerto Rican Latin trap rapper/singer told Billboard he was planning to finally unleash his 15-track first full album (whose name translates to an acronym for “Por Siempre” — Forever) on Christmas Eve, “Real, real, real, real, I finished the album three days ago,” the artist born Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio said on the phone from his home in Puerto Rico. “At that point I said I wanted to release it in Christmas. I didn’t want the year to end without releasing the album. I wanted to close 2018 with it.”

The rapper said he’d been working on the project for six months, and recently finished it by wrapping the song “Como antes [As Before],’ the first track they recorded for the album. Though Bunny has established a rep as the king of the collaboration — appearing on such smashes as “Te Boté” with Ozuna and Nicky Jam and Cardi B’s “I Like It” — X100pre only has three cameos: Diplo  on “200 MPH,” Drake on the recent single “Mia” and Dominican singer El Alfa on “La Romana.”

Bad bunny to drop debut 'x100pre' album on christmas eve: exclusive interview.

The album opens with the urgent trap ballad “Ni Bien Ni Mal” (Not Good or Bad), on which the singer promises a departed lover that “whatever happens, I’m not going to call you,” before sliding into the Diplo-assisted “200 MPH,” which trips along on a skittery beat and lyrics about gunning a jetski and partying in the tropics. On the melancholy”¿Quien Tu Eres?,” he croons “Who are you?/ Tell me partner, who are you?/ To get close to me, who are you?,” before basically daring someone to step to him, listing off his accomplishments and warning them to ask around about him in a fierce English-language outro.

The album also includes “Caro” (Expensive), about how high-dollar Bunny’s flow is, the fiery “La Romana” with the fleet-tongued El Alfa, the new wavey, guitar-spiked “Tenemos Que Hablar” (We Need to Talk) and the broken-hearted “Solo de Mi” (Just Me), which bounces from a midtempo lost love lament to a cranked up reggaeton jam in the second half, fueled by what sounds like a child’s keyboard.

Things To Do

Music and concerts | yes, bad bunny sold out a weekend at the united center — but for chicago’s latin music fans, he’s more than that.

It was silly to think that the crowd wouldn’t fill in. It was a Thursday night. Folks most likely had to work, and traffic down Madison Street around the United Center is always terrible on show nights.

By the time the first notes of “Monaco,” the viral single from Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny’s latest album “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana,” rang out, the blinding light coming from every cell phone and glowing cowboy lanyard (provided upon arrival) were enough to confirm the fans by the thousands were present and ready.

Kicking off his first of three, narrowly sold-out nights in Chicago on his Most Wanted Tour, Bad Bunny (El Conejo Malo in Spanish, or if you — like his loyal fanbase — prefer to be a bit more familiarly affectionate, simply, Benito) took to the stage with the confidence only a global superstar can carry.

The anticipation ahead of his arrival was palpable. Approaching the venue, vendors lined both sides of the street with bootleg merchandise and sombreros Sinaloa (known by Anglo audiences as cowboy hats) embellished with everything from beads and feathers to flashing LEDs. In contrast to his previous outings, Bunny — born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — had asked fans ahead of the tour’s start in February to trade their neon and streetwear styles for the likes of bolo ties, denim, bell bottoms and fringe-lined button-ups. Chicago, like other cities visited thus far, complied.

Just after 8 p.m., fans were still arriving. Some heading straight for the box office to cop last-minute tickets not gobbled up by ‘bots or scalpers lurking on Ticketmaster, while those inside clamored around merch booths for official, Benito-sanctioned fashions.

Fans Melina Coronel and John Boyer, who purchased tickets back when they first went on sale, were hesitant to speculate on what was in store for them that evening.

“I upgraded my seats,” Coronel said excitedly. “I was originally in the 300 section, now I’m in the 100 section, so I got lucky. You know, YOLO.”

“We’ve been fans for quite a few years,” Boyer added. “We went to his show, the first one after COVID at Allstate Arena in 2022 when things first started opening back up. Then we went to the Soldier Field one. It was like a party. But a good show, a good crowd — the more excited and energetic the crowd, the better the show. We’re just excited for the whole thing.”

For friends Evelyn Gomez and Lyz Chavez, attending Thursday’s show was a game-time decision. Gomez had purchased tickets for the pair two hours prior after realizing she didn’t want to miss the artist she first saw back in 2018.

“It was with Pitbull. Becky G was on (the bill) too. Her and Bad Bunny, it was before they got big-big. I had pretty good seats, too.” Gomez remembers. “But I wanted to come tonight regardless, it was just time, money, everything. Last minute, I asked a group of friends and they already had tickets, so I asked Lyz and she was down. I was thinking I’d even come by myself. I just want to have fun.”

She says Bad Bunny’s three-night run means much more to Latinx folks in the city than simply catching a great concert.

“I love seeing his growth,” she continues. “I love that he’s brought more of the Latin side to the U.S. than the opposite. We’re finally popular, our music is on English stations and you never heard that before. What he’s doing is awesome, he’s brought everyone together.”

“It’s also amazing to think that he came from bagging groceries to all of this,” Chavez adds. “To go from that to breaking barriers and bringing the Latin community, the Latin people and culture to American culture — he’s a huge artist. He did it on his terms. I didn’t know I was coming to this concert and I was listening to his albums this morning when I was working from home and I can’t pick a favorite. They’re all great in their own way. They make you think about specific things that were going on in your life at that time — the album where he was riding around New York City during the pandemic (2020’s “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo”) – you attach your memories to that. He’s become a generational artist. He’s going to be the Los Bukis or Juan Gabriel of our time.”

As the lights dimmed at 9 p.m., the Philharmonic Orchestra Project — a 12-piece orchestra led by Carlitos Lopez — graced the far stage. Setting the early tone for what was about to become an ambitious spectacle of grandiose proportions, the ensemble’s lush, sweeping arrangements were likened to “an old movie where the credits play at the beginning” by one attendee. The stage was a large circle divided into two, separated by the audience in the middle and connected by a runway suspended mid-air — and guaranteed a 360-degree immersive experience.

Fifteen minutes later, a suddenly pitch-black venue (again, save for cellphone and lanyard lights) welcomed its hero. Opening with the Drake-adjacent celebrity lament “Nadie Sabe,” Bad Bunny arrived front and center. With his velvety baritone booming, he rolled through myriad tracks from 2023’s “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” with sophisticated flare and ceaseless energy, flanked by upwards of 15 dancers, funnels of smoke, fireworks and other flashy pyrotechnics. A stunning choreography sequence made “Vou 787,” which samples the seductive, siren synth of Madonna’s “Vogue,” a standout of the night.

The just over two-hour show was complete with video intermission — which brought the filmed Benito-on-horseback to life with the actual Benito re-entering the arena on one of two horses he’s been touring with, along with their trainers and owner — and was a journey in self-actualization and mythologizing. It was dramatic, as any true Pisces would produce, and exhilarating, a place where he and his fans alike thrived in both tension and catharsis. Peppering the end of the night with bites of now-classics such as “Chambea,” “Yo Perreo Sola,” and “Me Porto Bonito,” among others, the artist showed just how far he’s come in a decade — though debut LP “X 100pre” was left untouched throughout the performance (and many fans griped they didn’t get their fill of songs from the breakthrough “Un Verano Sin Ti”). Then the audacious newcomer with labyrinthine graphics shaved into his scalp, now a consummate showman with nothing to prove, still unflinching in his vision for what popular music can and should be.

In a stripped down moment, where he sat atop a piano serenading fans (and letting them serenade him in return) with “un x100to” (released last year with beloved, regional Mexican band Grupo Frontera) and 2018’s “Amorfoda,” Bad Bunny displayed the graciousness, humor and humility that has endeared him to fans from the beginning.

Filtering back to their cars, ride-shares, and idling buses around 11:15 p.m., throngs of anointed followers continued smiling and dancing. Aida Acevedo and her daughters Bella, 13, and Delilah, 11, were more than pleased with their first time seeing their favorite artist.

“It was so fire!” Bella smiled. “(The tickets) were kind of a surprise. But hearing ‘Monaco,’ the horse — it was awesome.”

“I knew they were going to love it,” Acevedo said. “I love him. I liked that he played all songs, not just the new, but the old. His music has so much feeling. There’s so much love there.”

Benito is back: Bad Bunny fans pack United Center ahead of Easter Weekend

Bad+Bunny+performs+at+the+United+Center+for+the+first+night+of+the+%E2%80%9CMost+Wanted+Tour.%E2%80%9D

Lasers. Smoke. Pyrotechnics. A real horse. Trap Bad Bunny is back.

After the immense success of his 2022 reggaeton album “Un Verano Sin Ti,” Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) returned to his trap reggaeton roots with his 2023 album, “nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana.”

While “Un Verano Sin Ti” broke the record for most-streamed album ever on Spotify, “nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana” became the most-streamed album in a single day in 2023.

That being said, it’s no surprise that Bad Bunny’s tour was so highly anticipated. Called the “Most Wanted Tour,” Bad Bunny announced that he would be going back to his trap era for this performance, writing in online tour promotions, “solamente trap” — or “only trap” — and “if you’re not a real fan don’t come.”

badbunnydaily-joannehaner-2

Bad Bunny fans filled United Center for the three nights ahead of Easter Weekend. Initial ticket prices for nosebleed seats surpassed $200, and lower bowl seats cost more than $700 in some cities. The average price of a resale tour ticket was $640, according to SeatGeek.

Though some ticket prices reached four digits, fans still showed up and showed out for one of the world’s biggest artists, and he gave that energy right back to the crowd. The elaborate stage setup included two stages on either side of the venue and a rotating platform that brought him eye-to-eye with the fans in the upper bowls.

Bad Bunny opened the show with a live orchestra — because what else would a three-time Grammy winner do to kick off their show? The orchestra’s playing signaled straggling fans to rush to their seats, but as the music shifted to the opening music from the titular track of the album, the venue’s energy shifted.

As Bad Bunny emerged from the smoke with his head covered in a black scarf, the crowd, filled with cowboy hats and boots as far as the eye could see, was electrified.

Shifting into the show’s second song and one of the most streamed songs on the 22-track album, “MONACO” brought a multitude of effects, including laser shows, smoke screens and, of course, the most energetic choreography you ever did see.

The rest of the show consisted of plenty of other effects and surprises — including Bad Bunny on horseback, flame cannons on beat, flares, light shows from synchronized crowd necklaces and more. Saturday’s performance even featured a surprise appearance from Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko, who appears on “FINA” on the album.

The 37-song setlist placed the concert at just over two and a half hours in length, but Bad Bunny rarely left the stage. He performed the vast majority of the newest album plus a handful of hits from “Un Verano Sin Ti” and his 2020 album “YHLQMDLG” (Yo Hago Lo Que Me Da La Gana/I Do Whatever I Want).

Unfortunately, tracks from his 2018 debut studio album “X100PRE” were few and far between. As the album that solidified his standing as the Latin trap king, I was expecting more songs to make the cut, such as “La Romana” or “200 MPH.”

However, the older trap songs of Bad Bunny didn’t go unrecognized. During the show’s middle chunk, Benito brought back his mixtape days, mixing together popular songs from 2016 and 2017 like “Soy Peor,” “Chambea,” “Vuelve” and “Diles.”

Overall, the show was a complete vibe switch from his 2022 “World’s Hottest Tour.” Flowy beach outfits, palm fronds and bright colors were swapped for denim and leather. Nevertheless, Bad Bunny proved he can do it all, putting on one of the most visually elaborate and appealing shows of the year.

With this tour, Bad Bunny has reminded fans that he is not just an artist and trailblazer of the genre but also an award-winning performer.

Thousands of cell phone screens twinkle like starlight as Bad Bunny performs to a capacity crowd on Thursday night at the United Center.
