Unless the message is deeply hidden, I'd promptly conclude that this song is about a drug trip.

Yes, that's right. Drugs, that barely referenced subject in music.

Heartstopper Stars Kit Connor, Joe Locke & Tobie Donovan Reunite on Broadway Ahead of S3 Release

the trip donovan

By Sara Delgado

Joe Locke Kit Connor and Tobie Donovan during a still of Heartstopper Season 2

Heartstopper stars Kit Connor and Tobie Donovan have made their way stateside to support costar Joe Locke during his Broadway run — and they made sure fans got a peek at their reunion with the sweetest post on social media.

ICYMI: Joe Locke , who plays Charlie on the hit Netflix show, is currently portraying Tobias Ragg in the revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street on Broadway, and of course, his costars couldn't miss the chance to see him perform live.

Joe Locke takes a bow as he makes his Broadway debut in Sweeney Todd on January 31, 2024.

Kit Connor and Tobie Donovan, who play Nick and Isaac on Heartstopper , made their way to the U.S. to support Locke almost two months into his first Broadway venture. Locke's Broadway run on Sweeney Todd started back in January; the role was previously played by Daniel Marconi, Nathan Salstone, and Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo .

On March 17, Connor took to social media to immortalize the trio’s reunion. "Well done sweetheart,” he wrote on his Instagram stories over the picture, which showed them posing between the audience stalls. Donovan reposted the photo to his account, writing: "My eyes are still puffy from all the crying." Locke also reciprocated the love and reposted the image, adding: “My boys.”

It looks like Locke, Connor, and Donovan have been keeping good company in between Broadway functions. Jordan Fisher, who also did Sweeney Todd on Broadway, commented under Connor's most recent Instagram feed post, which just so happens to be a picture with Donovan from NYE , writing: “It was such a pleasure meeting both of you sweet people today 💜 Give [Joe Locke] some extra love for me down at the pie shoppe!”

It also looks like the trio is doing some sightseeing together while Connor and Donovan visit Locke in New York City. The day after attending the show, Locke posted an Instagram story showing the three actors crossing the streets of Manhattan. “Gay Beatles. Just need our Willy,” the star captioned the post, tagging fellow Heartstopper actor Will Gao , who plays Tao. Donovan also reposted the story to his IG. (The biggest mystery right now is who took this pic?)

The trio's NYC reunion comes as fans prepare for the release of Heartstopper season 3 , which is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year. According to Variety, filming for the long-anticipated third season wrapped in December 2023 in the U.K. before Locke set sail for the U.S. to step into Tobias's shoes. The last update we have from the show is that Bridgerton 's Jonathan Bailey has seemingly joined the cast in a guest-starring role.

What will stem the tide of Australia’s music festival closures?

NME speaks to promoters and industry leaders about the post-pandemic struggles faced by Australian music festivals and what needs to be done to secure their future

Punters survey Falls Festival 2022/2023, photo by Matt Jelonek/WireImage via Getty Images

Across the Australian music industry, the word is that festivals are in peril. Over the past year, regional festivals big and small – including Groovin’ the Moo , Coastal Jam, Ninch Fest – have called it quits. Sydney’s 40-year-old Newtown Festival did so too. Others took a break: the Wangaratta Jazz & Blues festival pulled the pin on its 2023 festival but will try again this November, and two heavyweights, Dark Mofo and Falls Festival , chose to take a break in 2024 to recalibrate. What’s causing the trend and what can be done to stem the tide?

Mitch Wilson, Managing Director of the industry’s peak body Australian Festival Association, told NME several years of compounding challenges has put the industry on a precipice: COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, unpredictable weather events, consumer confidence and waning interest from the next generation of young festivalgoers.

“We’re sort of in the middle of it right now and just need the time and support to try and understand [what new, younger audiences want],” said Wilson. “We just don’t have two seasons in us to survive, to make a loss here and there and try something new.”

It’s possible that the country’s COVID lockdowns caused many young people to miss the rite of passage that live music events once were. Music Victoria’s recent Perceptions of Live Music Report found that regardless of the festival size, young people aged 16 to 18 were the least likely demographic to have attended a festival at least annually, with at 42 per cent and 39 per cent attending small and large fests respectively. This is 10 per cent lower than expected, with historically 52 per cent having attending a festival by the time they were 18.

Wilson added that a lack of suppliers has led to an uncompetitive market. Rising operational costs for festivals, including escalating fees and transport costs for international artists, are compounded by a weak Australian dollar. Add consumers’ cost of living pressures and you’ve got a perfect storm. Easing of regulatory requirements and costs at a state level is one solution, Wilson said: “Reducing venue costs at government-owned venues, user-pays policing costs and numbers and liquor licensing conditions that are put on by some agencies are really restrictive. They even have flow on effects to sponsorship agreements.”

Despite a bleak outlook across the industry, there are nonetheless signs of life, Wilson pointed out. “There’s strong pockets around the sector, some genre-specific [pockets], particularly in the electronic space, are doing quite well despite the broader challenges being faced.”

One promoter that has both led and capitalised on the electronic music zeitgeist is Untitled Group, the Victorian company behind Wildlands and Beyond the Valley , among others. Speaking to NME late February, Untitled Group co-founder Filippo Palermo said the company’s success – marked most recently by 35,000 tickets sold at the 2023/2024 edition of Beyond the Valley – has been a gradual build.

“We worked in nightclubs for five years until doing 3,000 tickets per week at the Palace Theatre to really walk before we ran with Beyond the Valley,” said Palermo. “And I’m very grateful that we had that opportunity to do that and to really find the capital through saving money through the events that were already running, as well as working through building artist relationships and building community and culture over that time before stepping into starting a music festival.”

As festivals struggle, high-profile headline tours seem to be thriving – from major pop draws like Taylor Swift and Pink to genre stars like drum’n’bass veterans Chase & Status and country up-and-comer Zach Bryan. So it’s not surprising that Palermo says Untitled Group (which collaborated with Unified Music Group to bring Bryan to Australia) will continue to promote festivals, but also focus on touring major international artists over the next 12 to 24 months.

Looking beyond Untitled Group, Palermo said that during this period of high costs and unpredictable audience behaviour, government bodies could look at reviewing their processes and funding allocation.

“I think the bureaucratic loopholes and process to get income from government is a really, really long process sometimes… submitting an application for a grant, for instance, especially for smaller independents is kind of like buying a lottery ticket, but you have to work really hard to purchase the lottery ticket.

“It’s probably really hard for some of the people in these government bodies to understand promoters [for whom] $50,000 goes a seriously long way and is the difference between them being able to run their event or not. I think spreading the dollar a bit more is something that some of these government bodies could look at in future when it comes to investment into the arts and entertainment sector.”

View of Big Red Bash 2021 from the sand dunes in Birdsville, photo by Marc Grimwade/Getty Images

Not everyone believes that government support is the only answer. Greg Donovan, founder of the Birdsville Big Red Bash and the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash, two of Australia’s biggest remote outback music festivals, thinks that festival operators must take some ownership of their decision to enter such a risk-prone sector operating on razor thin margins.

“When people in business get into trouble, or an industry is not feeling great, people always look to government to say: ‘oh, you know, you’ve got to help us out’. But, you know, personally, I don’t see that as the role of government when we’re putting on, you know, commercial events that carry a level of risk. I think it’s up to us to manage that risk,” Donovan told NME .

Donovan started the Big Red Bash in his fifties with a $300,000 redundancy payout from his insurance career . This August, a record 14,000 punters are set to trek into the Outback plains outside Silverton, New South Wales for the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash.

Donovan said that while his Queensland and NSW events have received funding for infrastructure upgrades to their festival sites, their success has come down to a combination of ruthlessly scrutinising costs, building community and finding a niche in the market. For Donovan, that means targeting an audience older than the struggling youth market.

“Programming for our festival is probably a bit easier than the youth-focused festival. People in their 20s and 30s [have] fairly rapidly evolving music tastes. Demographics, sort of in the 40s, 50s, 60s, probably what they used to listen to 30 years ago, they still listen to now,” said Donovan.

Both events have also become destination festivals that have fostered community in unique ways. “We have great communities and social media groups focused around the trip and travelling,” said Donovan. “We do Nutbush world record attempts where we get thousands of people dancing together, drag races and people getting dressed up. It’s not just focused on music.”

Still, one thing Wilson, Palermo and Donovan all agree on is that festivals provide huge benefits to the communities they serve, both cultural and financial.

“They give people who live in those areas or are in reasonable proximity those areas the opportunity to come and enjoy [these] experiences,” said Donovan. “The Big Red Bash brought $19million of additional economic activity and tourism spending into the outback and the region. It uplifts the brand and reputation of the location you’re holding that festival in. We really need to keep them going.”

And among the lively discussions about line-ups and international artists, it’s the homegrown talent that’s often forgotten. Palermo believes festivals play a crucial role in platforming local artists, pointing to his long relationship with the Melbourne electronic music producer and DJ, Dom Dolla , who has performed at every Beyond The Valley since the fest’s inception in 2014.

Last year, the ARIA-winning and Grammy -nominated artist sold out Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl (twice) before selling out two nights at Flemington Racecourse. The latter shows are part of an Australian tour that broke Untitled Group’s record for tickets sold within 24 hours of going on sale.

“Dom is a testament to how strong our team is alongside Dom’s team, to work with such an amazing songwriter, an amazing performer,” Palermo said. “To be able to further increase his value in life ticket sales in Australia, to the point of what we just did, it’s nothing short of extraordinary.”

Salovey trip to africa marks a decade of increased engagement.

President Salovey talking with Rwandan youth

During Yale’s spring break, President Peter Salovey is traveling in Africa, his third visit to the continent as the university’s leader, reinforcing Yale’s commitment to global collaboration and extending the university’s outreach to foster educational partnerships.

The trip, which includes visits to Côte d'Ivoire and Rwanda, marks a broadening of this outreach to cultivate new and ongoing collaborations with Francophone African countries, with a focus on issues of global importance. Among these are environmental conservation, economic growth, and access to higher education.

“ I am thrilled to visit Rwanda and Côte d’Ivoire this week to mark a decade of Yale’s increased engagement across Africa,” Salovey said. “My goal is to expand our outreach for new and ongoing collaborations, and as this is my first time visiting a Francophone African country, my travels underscore the importance of engaging broadly in the continent.

“ The discussions I am having on this trip with institutional partners and alumni are helping us to explore how Yale might continue to build networks and establish educational and research initiatives with colleagues across Africa to address global challenges.”

Strengthening educational and cultural ties in Côte d'Ivoire

Salovey arrived today in the Côte d'Ivoire capital of Abidjan, where he will meet with government ministers and officials from the African Development Bank, underscoring the trip's focus on fostering educational collaborations and economic development initiatives. A reception will follow, providing an opportunity for networking and strengthening the bond between Yale and its Ivorian counterparts and alumni.

Salovey will attend a roundtable discussion with students from the International Community School of Abidjan and other schools across the city, hosted by the U.S. embassy. During his conversations with students, the Yale president will answer questions, share insights into Yale’s educational philosophy, and encourage them to be lifelong learners.

The visit will also include a meeting with local university presidents which will focus on enhancing educational exchanges and partnerships between Ivorian institutions and Yale .

Engaging in environmental and educational collaboration in Rwanda

Earlier in the trip, Salovey visited Rwanda to meet with those involved in Yale’s environmental and educational initiatives there. During a poignant visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Salovey paid homage to the victims of the Rwandan genocide. This visit underscored the importance of remembrance of the past to inform efforts to prevent future conflicts, he said, highlighting Yale's commitment to the study and promotion of human rights.

That same day, Salovey addressed environmental research during meetings with Jeanne d'Arc Mujawamariya, Rwanda’s minister of environment, and other Rwandan environmental leaders. He explored avenues for collaboration between Yale and Rwanda on sustainability and conservation projects, emphasizing the role of academic institutions in tackling global environmental challenges.

The Yale delegation was joined by representatives from Yale School of the Environment (YSE), for a trip to Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda, to observe the country’s conservation efforts firsthand, reinforcing Yale's commitment to biodiversity conservation.

YSE, which offers Yale master’s and Ph.D. students the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to study conservation of wildlife and wildlands, has learned from several highly successful Rwandan government and public-private initiatives.

President Salovey with a group of people.

“ This year for the first time, through a partnership between YSE, the University of Rwanda, and the Smithsonian Institution, we will be able to bring an equal number of Rwandan master’s or Ph.D. students to join a major portion of the study tour, experiencing the outstanding biodiversity of the parks, their management, and their relationship to communities at their borders,” said Amy Vedder, a lecturer at Yale School of the Environment who participated in the president’s visit. “We look forward to the networking and joint learning that will ensue, knowing that such an experience can contribute significantly to leadership development here in Rwanda as well as with our globally recruited students.”

Subsequently, Salovey met with a women's cooperative group to discuss their vital role in rural adaptation to climate change, showcasing the university’s engagement with partners to support community-driven environmental initiatives.

In Rwanda, Salovey also delivered welcoming remarks that described Yale’s contribution to transforming research into policy in Africa at a policy dialogue titled, “Collaboration through Research: Pathways to Evidence-based Policy in Rwanda.”

The event brought together researchers from Yale’s Economic Growth Center (EGC), Yale Inclusion Economics, and the International Growth Centre, and featured presentations by Yale professors Lauren Falcao Bergquist, from the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs and Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Kevin Donovan, from the Yale School of Management. Falcao Bergquist and Donovan, who are both economics faculty members and EGC affiliates, spoke about their research on industrial policies to boost exports and rural infrastructure investments to mitigate climate change effects.

Underlining the importance of research-policy partnerships in Rwanda and the mutual benefits of academic collaboration, the event was chaired by Rwanda Minister of Commerce and Industry Jean-Chrysostome Ngabitsinze. The event also provided a chance for participants to engage with Rwandan counterparts and organizations, such as Bridges to Prosperity, which helps build bridges to better lives in rural communities, to discuss research and pathways to impact in Rwanda to address economic and environmental challenges. Learn more about the policy dialogue by visiting the EGC website .

The visit also included a meeting with Eric Kneedler, the U.S. ambassador to Rwanda, which included an overview of the country and a discussion on the importance of increased collaboration between U.S. and African institutions.

Fostering global partnerships for a sustainable future

The visit to Côte d'Ivoire and Rwanda exemplifies Yale’s dedication to strengthening global partnerships in education, environmental conservation, and economic development, Salovey said. In addition to underscoring the university’s commitment to addressing global challenges, the trip also highlighted the potential for academic institutions to contribute significantly to international diplomacy and collaboration.

In his inaugural remarks as Yale’s president in 2013, Salovey launched an initiative to strengthen ties between Yale and Africa by fostering new directions in research on Africa, and identifying new partnerships and deepening existing ones, all while transforming the educational experiences and career opportunities of students at Yale and in Africa. Throughout his tenure as president, Yale has continued to leverage the power of partnerships and global networks across the continent to create new knowledge in science, public health, business, and other disciplines — and to improve lives around the globe.

As Yale continues to build and strengthen these partnerships, Salovey said the impacts of these collaborations across the African continent are expected to resonate far beyond the immediate participants, to foster a more interconnected and mutually supportive global academic community.

Reigning NCAA champ UConn tops the East Region bracket as the No. 1 overall seed in March Madness

Connecticut opened the season with uncertainty about how well the Huskies would replace major pieces from last year’s run to the national championship.

Any questions had been answered well before Selection Sunday.

The second-ranked Huskies (31-3) will enter the NCAA Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed, headlining the East Region bracket that runs close to home. And they’ve spent long stretches of this season looking like a runaway train in overpowering opponents and chasing college basketball’s first repeat title in 17 years.

They will start with their first top regional seed since a Final Four run in 2009 and a sixth time overall. The five-time champions open play Friday against 16th-seeded Stetson in New York.

“I know we’ve never gotten a No. 1 overall seed in program history,” coach Dan Hurley said after the Huskies won their first Big East Tournament title since 2011 on Saturday night, “so this is a group that seems to be making history in a place that it’s hard to make history.”

Hurley’s analysis went a step further, adding that UConn has “clearly been the best program in the country this year.”

It’s hard to argue otherwise.

UConn leads the country in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency rankings entering Sunday’s final pre-tournament games, averaging 126.6 points per 100 possessions for the best output since 2018 champ Villanova (127.8). The Huskies also rank in adjusted defensive efficiency (94.4), joining Arizona and Auburn as the only teams to rank in the top 15 of both categories.

The team lost Final Four most outstanding player Adama Sanogo and sharpshooting guard Jordan Hawkins from last year’s title run as a No. 4 seed, with all six wins by 13+ points. Yet Tristen Newton has elevated into a lead scorer, the 7-foot-2 Donovan Clingan remains an imposing yet nimble presence, while new additions like Cam Spencer (transfer) and Stephon Castle (freshman) have the Huskies rolling again.

“There’s just not a lot of holes in the way that we play,” Hurley said.

UConn has lost once since Dec. 20 with its last eight wins coming by an average margin of 21.2 points. The Huskies are poised to return to the No. 1 ranking in Monday’s AP Top 25 poll, which will stand until a final edition comes April 9 after the NCAA championship game in Glendale, Arizona.

The question now is whether UConn can become the first to win back-to-back champs since Florida in 2006 and 2007.

Seventh-ranked Iowa State grabbed the No. 2 seed as the top contender, blowing out Houston — the South Region's top seed — in the Big 12 Tournament's title game for a second win against the Cougars this year.

The Cyclones (27-7) have the top-ranked defense in KenPom, allowing just 87.1 points per 100 possessions. They open Thursday against No. 15 seed South Dakota State in Omaha, Nebraska.

The other top challengers are No. 13 Illinois (26-8) as the No. 3 seed and 12th-ranked Auburn (27-7) as the 4. Illinois faces No. 14 seed Morehead State, while Auburn plays 13th-seeded Yale.

The Cyclones (Big 12), Illini (Big Ten) and Tigers (Southeastern Conference) all won their league tournaments this week.

Two of last year’s surprise Final Four teams — national runner-up San Diego State and Florida Atlantic — have reunited with the Huskies in this bracket.

The Aztecs (24-10) are the No. 5 seed with a first-round matchup against No. 12 seed UAB on Friday in Spokane, Washington. The Owls (25-8) hold the No. 8 seed and face ninth-seeded Northwestern in Brooklyn on Friday, setting up a potential second-round date with the Huskies.

Washington State and Duquesne are back in the field after lengthy waits.

The seventh-seeded Cougars (24-9) open against 10th-seeded Drake on Thursday in Omaha for the program’s first trip to the NCAAs since 2008, when current Virginia coach Tony Bennett led Washington State to the Sweet 16.

As for the 11th-seeded Dukes (24-11), they’re in the field for the first time in nearly a half-century. Duquesne's Atlantic 10 title run secured the program's first bid since 1977 and face No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha on Thursday.

There are multiple big-time scorers in the bracket, starting with Illinois’ Terrence Shannon Jr. He’s third nationally in scoring at 22.6 points per game, including 40 points against Nebraska and then 34 more against Wisconsin to close out the Big Ten tourney.

There’s also Drake’s Tucker DeVries (sixth at 21.8) and Stetson’s Jalen Blackmon, who is ranked 10th nationally (21.5) and had 43 points against Austin Peay in the Atlantic Sun title game to secure that program's first-ever NCAA bid .

The regionals will be held in Boston, about 85 miles to the southwest of the Huskies’ Storrs campus. The Huskies are the favorite to win the national title, according to FanDuel Sportsbook .

Eagles QB Kenny Pickett mum on moving on from Steelers, ready for ‘good reset’ as backup in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — After two middling seasons in Pittsburgh, Kenny Pickett was ready to leave the Steelers behind — as well as most of the reasons why he wanted out, rather than stay and compete with Russell Wilson for the starting quarterback job.

All Pickett wants now is a chance to contribute, somehow, with the Philadelphia Eagles after he was traded last week.

Pickett, a New Jersey native, rattled off a list of Eagles greats that included Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook he grew up rooting for at the Linc. He had “great memories” of going to games with his dad and grandfather since he was 5 years old, and the chance to run out of the home team tunnel — and shave almost 8 hours round trip off his parents’ commute — left him absolutely delighted.

The 25-year-old Pickett said later he had nothing but “great memories” of his Steelers’ run, as well.

But as for that ending?

Pickett was largely evasive on why he wished to play elsewhere, though the reasons were fairly transparent.

Pickett was traded just hours after the Steelers signed Wilson to a one-year deal to compete with Pickett for the starting job, though all signs appeared to be pointing to Wilson having the edge when the team reported for training camp at Saint Vincent College in July.

Wilson declined to say he expected to be the starter when asked during his introductory news conference and added he and Pickett had connected shortly after Wilson agreed to terms with the team, saying they were both focused on making the Steelers better.

The Wilson-Pickett combo instead had a shorter shelf life in Pittsburgh than a Jaromir Jagr bobblehead .

“I just thought it was time,” Pickett said Monday. “It just felt like it was time from the things that transpired. I wanted to get a chance to go somewhere else and continue to grow my career.”

Pickett was lambasted by some critics for seemingly refusing to compete with Wilson for the starting spot. In Philly, he’s a clear No. 2 QB behind Jalen Hurts, who led the Eagles to the Super Bowl two seasons ago. Pickett comes on the cheap for a backup — he will count slightly less than $2 million against the Eagles’ salary cap this season.

Pickett said he was ready to help the Eagles “any way I can” and already had talked to Hurts and backup Tanner McKee about how they can work together to make the team a contender next season.

“It’s a good reset,” Pickett said. “It’s a crazy league, crazy business. I’m just trying to put my best foot forward and be an asset for this team.”

The Eagles won the Super Bowl for the 2017 season behind a backup QB in Nick Foles and largely have relied on veterans such as Gardner Minshew and Marcus Mariota to fill that role of late.

Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter but struggled to stay healthy and be a difference maker for an offense that languished near the bottom of the league.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin appeared to give Pickett a vote of confidence after the end of the season while allowing that 2024 would be a “huge” year in terms of his future. General manager Omar Khan doubled down on Pickett at the NFL combine last month, saying the team had “full faith” that Pickett could mesh with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

Yet a week later the club brought free-agent-to-be Wilson in for a visit and agreed to terms on a one-year deal late Sunday night.

Pittsburgh received a third-round pick in this year’s draft and two seventh-round choices in 2025 for Pickett and Pittsburgh’s fourth-round pick this year.

“I think the communication is what it is,” Pickett said. “It’s behind closed doors. I’m confident in the way that I handled it. I handled it the way I should have handled it.”

One early sign that Pickett’s relationship with the Steelers soured came in December when it was reported that he told the coaching staff he didn’t want to suit up as a backup behind Mason Rudolph. Tomlin said Pickett, who had been sidelined by ankle surgery, had been cleared by the medical staff to play but opted to make him inactive because of his lack of reps during practice.

“I think that goes back to a lot of the communication behind closed doors,” said Pickett, adding he didn’t like the internet speculation. “There was a plan there for that game. It went down exactly how it planned to go down during that entire week.”

It almost doesn’t matter now. The brief and tumultuous Pickett era in Pittsburgh is over — even if the why remains without the full picture.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Houston Rockets

Cleveland Cavaliers star guard Donovan Mitchell just returned from a knee injury and a seven-game absence that required an injection. And it sounds like he might be headed back to the sideline, at least for a game.

Per Bally Sports’ Serena Winters, Mitchell said “I’m probably not playing next game to be completely honest with you” after the Cavaliers’ loss to the Houston Rockets on Sunday. The Cavs’ next game is on Monday on the road against the Indiana Pacers. That game completes a three-game road trip.

Full quote below, via Winters:

Donovan Mitchell talking about his knee post-game, says he probably won't play against Indiana. Donovan had a PRP injection on March 4th to treat a left knee bone bruise (missed 7 total games), before returning 2 games ago. pic.twitter.com/r0Z5QgbscD — Serena Winters (@SerenaWinters) March 16, 2024

Mitchell had his PRP injection on March 7 to treat a bone bruise. He returned this past Wednesday in the Cavaliers’ win over the New Orleans Pelicans and had 14 points on 5-16 shooting. Against Houston, he was 4-13 for 13 points. In neither game did Mitchell look like himself or anything close to the player he was pre-injury.

This, obviously, is a real concern for the Cavs. Mitchell is their best player. He is their offensive engine. If he’s not healthy — plus Max Strus and Evan Mobley are on the sidelines with their injuries — this team is not nearly as good. And with the playoffs about a month away, is Mitchell going to be right when the games matter most? Will the Cavs be able to hold onto a top-three seed in the Eastern Conference if Mitchell misses another stretch?

Uconn is favored to become first repeat men’s ncaa champion since 2007.

(AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)

For years, Dan Hurley has looked up to Billy Donovan, a fellow point guard from the New York City area who played in the Big East Conference before embarking on a successful coaching career.

In 2006 and 2007, Donovan was the University of Florida’s coach when the Gators won consecutive NCAA championships. Since then, no men’s team has been able to duplicate Florida’s achievement. But this year, Hurley is coaching a University of Connecticut squad that has perhaps the best chance of becoming the first back-to-back national champion since Florida.

The Huskies (31-3) enter the NCAA tournament as the overall No. 1 seed, the first time the vaunted program has had that distinction. They open their quest for the sixth title in UConn history on Friday afternoon in a first round game against No. 16 Stetson at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., about 140 miles from campus.

Hurley said he has spoken with Donovan about how to approach coaching the year after winning an NCAA championship. Donovan, who is now the Chicago Bulls coach, has been a sounding board on other topics, too.

“I talk to him a lot,” Hurley said on Saturday night after UConn won the Big East tournament title. “He’s a mentor, an idol and a legend. He gives me perspective beyond just chasing achievement – that servant leadership, the real part of coaching, the relationships, improving the lives of your players, setting them up for success, the impact that you have as a coach.”

Donovan is nearly eight years older than Hurley and has a more calm sideline demeanor than the fiery Hurley. But the two can relate to each other through their shared playing experiences (Donovan at Providence College and Hurley at Seton Hall) and circuitous path to becoming seen as an elite coach.

Before Donovan and Hurley won their first national titles, they were viewed as coaches who couldn’t win big games. Donovan did make the Final Four in 2000, his fourth season at Florida, but the Gators failed to make it out of the first weekend for the next five years.

Florida entered the 2005-06 season unranked in the preseason Associated Press poll after its top three scorers (Anthony Roberson, David Lee and Matt Walsh) departed. But the Gators won their first 17 games and rose to No. 2 in the poll. They then went 5-6 over their next 11 games before winning their final two regular season games and the Southeastern Conference tournament title.

During the NCAA tournament, with the exception of a 57-53 Sweet 16 victory over Georgetown, the No. 3 seeded Gators won their other five games by at least 13 points, including 73-57 over UCLA in the championship game.

Heading into the 2006-07 season, Florida faced much different expectations than the year before. The Gators’ top seven scorers returned, including three players (Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer and Al Horford) who could have been first round NBA draft picks if they had left school. Not surprisingly, the Gators were ranked first in the AP preseason poll.

Still, it wasn’t always an easy road for Florida that season. Matt McCall, the director of operations on that team, said that players, especially Noah, who could once enjoy being college kids were now under the national spotlight and surrounded by fans and attention wherever they went. Florida closed out February with three losses in four games before defeating Kentucky in the regular season finale. The Gators ended up winning the SEC tournament and NCAA championship, culminating what was at times a trying season in the best way possible.

“The second year to me was harder, and it was harder for everyone because of the expectations,” McCall said. “I tell people all the time, expectations are the hardest thing to deal with in sports. You see teams that have great runs, have these great teams and then the following year, they're not as good even if they have some pieces back. That to me is the most impressive thing about Danny Hurley and this UConn team.”

Indeed, Hurley has the Huskies playing the best of anyone in the country, but he knows all about postseason disappointment, too. Before last season, Hurley had not won an NCAA tournament game at UConn, failing to make the tournament in his first year in 2019, missing out in 2020 because the event was cancelled and losing in the first round in 2021 and 2022 as the higher seed both times.

UConn was unranked in last year’s AP preseason poll but won its first 14 games to rise to No. 2 in late December. They then lost six of their next eight games before finishing the regular season winning eight of nine games. They lost in the Big East tournament semifinals by two points to Marquette and received the No. 4 seed in the West Region of the NCAA tournament.

At halftime of the first round game, No. 13 seed Iona led by two points. But UConn regrouped in the second half and pulled away for an 87-63 victory. From there, the Huskies were dominant, winning each of their games by at least 13 points, including 76-59 over San Diego State in the championship game.

Still, after losing leading scorer Adama Sanogo, first round NBA draft pick Jordan Hawkins and second round NBA selection Andre Jackson, few predicted UConn to be in contention for another NCAA title. Sure, the Huskies were No. 6 in the AP preseason poll, but they have been much better than most observers could have anticipated.

The Huskies have won 21 of their past 22 games, and their only losses have come at Kansas by four points on Dec. 1, by 15 points at Seton Hall on Dec. 20 when star center Donovan Clingan was out with an injury and by 19 points at Creighton on Feb. 20 when the Blue Jays shot 54.7% from the field and made 15 of 25 3-pointers.

UConn has two first team All-Big East selections in guards Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer, as well as two players (Clingan and freshman guard Stephon Castle) who are likely lottery picks in June’s NBA draft. Alex Karaban, a 6-foot-8 forward, is the fifth starter and is averaging 13.9 points per game, while the reserves include guard Hassan Diarra, post player Samson Johnson and freshman forward Jaylin Stewart, who played an increased role in the Big East tournament.

UConn is ranked first in analyst Ken Pomeroy’s adjusted efficiency margin (32.21) and offensive efficiency rating (126.6) and 11th in Pomeroy’s adjusted defensive efficiency rating (94.4). Auburn is the only other team in the top 11 in both the offensive and defensive categories.

Hurley’s teams are often known for their aggressive defense and relentless on that end of the floor, but this year’s team also has an elite offense. Only three teams have had a better offensive efficiency since KenPom started tracking data in 1998-99: Wisconsin (129.0) in 2015, Villanova (127.8) in 2018 and Duke (127.7) in 1999. Villanova won the national title that year, while Wisconsin and Duke lost in the title games in those respective years.

“They have more balance and they’re harder to guard (than last year’s team),” said McCall, who was UMass’s head coach for five seasons and is currently an analyst with the Field of 68, NBC Sports and Sirius XM. “Would I have called them the best team in the country based on what they lost last year going into the season? No. But they embody everything that their coach is about. They have a culture. They have an identity. and they have talent. That's a recipe to win a lot of basketball games…They have a legit shot to (win another title).”

Still, McCall understands that the NCAA tournament is unpredictable. Unlike the NBA playoffs, where the best team usually emerges from the best-of-7 format, a college team needs to win six consecutive games for the title. An off-night can lead to an early exit.

For instance, McCall was an assistant on the 2014 Florida team that entered the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, went undefeated in the SEC regular season, won the SEC tournament title and entered the Final Four on a 30-game winning streak before losing to No. 7 seed UConn by 10 points in the Final Four.

“We felt like we were the best team in the country – no question about it,” McCall said. “And then we ran into the UConn Huskies and Shabazz (Napier) and (Ryan) Boatrght…They were the better team that night. Were we the best team in the country that year? I still believe that….When you run into a hot team and you have a bad night, that’s why it’s so difficult to repeat.”

Hurley, now in his 14th season as a college head coach, is well aware of the fickle nature of the NCAA tournament. For most of the past three months, the Huskies have been dominant, including this past weekend at the Big East tournament. Still, as he spoke with a few reporters after Saturday night’s championship victory over Marquette, Hurley said it was OK for the team to celebrate a bit, but not too long. He was already looking ahead to seeing the team on Sunday and making sure their egos were in check.

“I’ll also have an edit of the screw-ups the last two days to humble them a little bit because that’s who I am,” he said.
