About uBlock Origin

In 2014 uBlock Origin’s founder, original author and lead developer, Raymond Hill, created the original uBlock extension, with its development initiated by forking the codebase of HTTP Switchboard with a separate blocking extension, uMatrix, which had been previously designed for advanced users. The initial uBlock was developed by Raymond Hill in order to enable community-maintained block lists while simultaneously adding additional features and upgrading the code quality to proper release standards. First released in June 2014 as an exclusive Chrome and Opera extension, in late 2015 the initial uBlock extension expanded to other browsers under its current name – uBlock Origin. (occasionally represented globally as – uBlock₀).

Following this 2015 introduction, a collaborative comsource and Sourcepoint industry research survey reported an 833% growth rate over a 10-month period ending in August 2016, the most rapid growth among any industry software publicly listed at that time. This report attributed this enormous surge to collective user demand for “pure” blockers with the capacity to operate outside the “acceptable advertising” program used by AdBlock, and other industry extensions.

Quickly gaining traction throughout the entire ad-blocking industry, the uBlock Origin Firefox version collected over 5 million active users, with its Chrome extension subsequently compiling over 10 million active users. Developer Nik Rolls then officially released uBlock Origin for the Microsoft Edge browser in December 2016.

In January 2017, uBlock Origin was added to the repositories for Debian 9 , and Ubuntu (16.04), and the uBlock Origin extension was awarded the prestigious IoT honor of “Pick of the Month” by Mozilla.

As of 2024, uBlock Origin continues to be maintained and actively developed by founder and lead developer Raymond Hill.

The uBlock Origin extension remains an industry leading, open-source, cross-platform browser extension with software developed specifically for multiple platform use, and as of 2024, uBlock Origin’s extension is available for several of the most widely used browsers, including: Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Opera, Firefox and all Safari releases prior to 13.

The uBlock Origin project still specifically refuses donations at this time, and instead advises all of its clients, users and supporters to donate to block list maintainers.

YouTube has gotten more aggressive with ads, so the makers of ad-blocking extensions have followed suit. Adblocker for YouTube is a Chrome extension that promises to automatically block YouTube ads, whether we're talking about the pre-roll ad appearing before your video or any text and banner ads that appear on the video itself.

If you prefer Firefox to Chrome, there's also an AdBlocker for YouTube extension that works on that browser. Same name, different developer apparently, but the functionality of stripping out video and display ads remains. This version works on Android devices too.

Uses looking for a more robust experience can try out the subscription-based AdGuard, which provides desktop and mobile options to reduce the ads you see when surfing online. 

AdGuard on Windows and Mac covers popular browsers, with highly configurable options for ads, content, and tracker blocking, as well as a parental controls module for restricting adult content. AdGuard for Android is a no-root ad-blocker that blocks advertising on apps and games, though you’ll have to install it from AdGuard’s site instead of through Google Play. AdGuard for iOS works with Safari to effectively filter ads on the default browser.

2. AdLock ($33 per year)

AdLock avoids the browser-based route, instead opting to run as a separate program to be able to block not only browser-based ads, but also advertising in other programs like Skype or games. 

The app runs in the background, using filters to block ads, popups, and autoplaying videos, speeding up loading times and applying Safe Browsing features to automatically block sites that are known to be unsafe. 

For obvious reasons, the mobile version is unavailable on the Google Play Store, so you'll need to sideload the app if you want to get AdLock into your Android device. iOS users can download AdLock directly from Apple's App Store.

3. Wipr (macOS, iOS; $1.99)

If you’re a Safari fan, Wipr may be the best ad blocker for both your Mac and iPhone. The app is available for both iOS and macOS — costing $1.99 from either Apple App Store — and it promises to work with Safari as well as apps that use Safari for displaying web pages.

You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

With Wipr, pages should load faster in Safari, which will be particularly welcome if you’re surfing from an iPhone, where ads and trackers can bog down your browser’s speed.

1. 1Blocker (iOS)

1Blocker was one of the first really good ad blockers on iOS when Apple opened up that functionality on iPhones and iPads; the apps has since been optimized for Safari. 

The app is designed to make browsing faster and more secure by blocking ads, popups, trackers and other online cruft. Rather than blocking content of a downloaded page, 1Blocker works with Safari's content blocker API to tell the browser what to block in advance, saving time and resources. 

1Blocker features more than 115,000 blocker rules, custom regional adblocking settings, and easy-to-use custom rules settings. The app is a free download, with premium features available as in-app purchases.

2. Firefox Focus (Android, iOS)

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing. 

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps. 

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

1. Decentraleyes (Chrome, Firefox)

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions. 

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. 3. Privacy Badger (Chrome, Firefox, Opera)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger browser extension was born from the EFF's concerns about the business models of some privacy tools and ad blockers. 

Privacy Badger functions similarly to extensions like AdBlock Plus (on which it was based), observing the various tracking tools that advertisers and other third parties might use to track your online activities and selectively blocking them from executing. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account. 

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

4. Tor Browser (Desktop, Android)

The Tor network helps anonymize your internet activity by bouncing the data you send and receive through a distributed anonymous network of routers to foil a common online surveillance technique called traffic analysis, which can reveal the sites you visit or who you're communicating with. 

The Tor Browser is an all-in-one package that includes everything you need to surf the net through the Tor network in an easy-to-install portable package. The package includes a modified version of Firefox with privacy aids such as NoScript baked in, and an automatic setup aid that makes it easy to connect to and create new Tor circuits. 

On the desktop, you can grab a version of Tor Browser for Windows, macOS or Linux. There's also a version of Tor Browser for Android, which replaces the previous OrBot + OrFox combination recommended for browsing Tor on Android.

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS. 

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

Many of the best ad blockers are available for free, either as extensions or as standalone apps, though a few, like AdLock, charge a fee. Determine if the free services provide enough ad-blocking to meet your needs or whether a paid app delivers more for your money. You should also figure out if a browser extension will take care of your ad-blocking needs or whether you should consider switching browsers to one with more built-in privacy features.

You can narrow down your choice in ad blockers by deciding specifically what you're looking to accomplish with such an app or extension. Do you just want to stop annoying pop-up ads from appearing or do you want the full range of services, including privacy features and an end to ad-tracking? Grab the ad blocker that ticks off all the boxes on your wishlist.

Failed on first two websites

I turned this on in Safari Private Mode and see ads all over CNN and FOX8. Three or more per page. Then I turned off acceptable ads. All but the most annoying ad disappeared. Does not block NPR Paywall overlay.

The Best Ad Blocking Tool

I’ve used Adblock Plus for Safari for about two years, along with two other ad blockers. Recently I upgraded my iPad to iOS17. Suddenly got ads all over the place! I checked the Adblock Plus and readjusted my enabled websites list, and closed the iPad, then re-opened it after a few minutes. Voilá— no more ads! This app is much more efficient than the other two ad blockers I used before. My suggestion to anyone having ad problems after installing an iOS update is just to check and recalibrate your Adblock Plus, and close your device, then re-open it. I really hate ads, so I love this app.

Stopped Working

After updating to iOS 17, this app has become completely useless. The thing I loved most about this app is that it would stop ads from opening their own tab in safari but it no longer prevents that from happening & just all around stopped blocking ads for me. Hoping it gets fixed cause this is the only adblocker I’ve ever liked. Other apps block pop up windows but they still open & say “this content is blocked” which you then have to close the tab. That never happened with Adblock Plus, it would literally prevent an advertiser from opening a window PERIOD. Hence why it’s my fav 🙁

Yes, uBlock Origin works on Safari, but only on versions prior to Safari 13. If you are using a newer version of Safari, such as 13 or 14, then you will need to use aother browser such as Chrome, Chromium, MS Edge, Opera or Firefox to use uBlock Origin’s extension.

Perhaps the hardest part of the equation is actually finding a good ad blocker to download. Many ad blockers are paid apps, which means you will be charged a dollar or two for the blocker. There are also blockers like AdBlock Plus, which claims that unobtrusive ads aren't blocked to "support websites" but actually charges a fee in the form of a cut of ad revenue from some of these websites.

The top of the list is 1Blocker . It is free to download and easy to configure. You can make a list of allowed sites (typically called a whitelist, but the modern term is safelist), which allows ads on the site. 1Blocker is also capable of blocking trackers, social media links, comment sections, and other areas of a website that might slow download speeds. However, you can only block one element at a time in the free version. An in-app purchase blocks several elements, such as both advertisements and tracking widgets.

Adguard is a solid alternative to 1Blocker. It is also free and includes the ability to allow ads from some sites. You can also block different trackers, social media buttons, and "annoying website features" like full page banners in addition to blocking ads.

And if you don't mind paying a couple of bucks, Purify Blocker is easily the best-paid ad blocker on the App Store. It blocks ads, trackers, social media links, and comment sections and can safe list your favorite sites. You can even use Purify to block images on the page, which can really speed up how fast pages load.

Enable the Ad Blocker in Settings

Now that you have downloaded your ad blocker, you will need to enable it. This isn't something you can do in the Safari web browser or in the app you just downloaded. You will need to launch the iPad's Settings app .

In Settings , tap Safari > Content Blockers to open a screen that lists all of the ad blockers and content blockers you have downloaded. Simply flip the switch next to the content blocker you have chosen and the blocker will begin working against ads in Safari.

How to Safe List a Website in Your Ad Blocker

For websites that display a normal amount of unobtrusive ads, especially if it is one of your favorite websites, it can be a good thing to "safelist" the website. This procedure allows the website to display ads as an exception to the rules set up in your ad blocker.

To safelist a website, enable the action within the Safari browser. First, click the Share button . This is the button that looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing out of it. Scroll through the bottom list and choose the More button.

This new screen includes an action specific to your ad blocker. It may say "Whitelist in 1Blocker" or simply "Adguard"—the language varies based on the solution you installed. Tap the switch beside the action to enable it.

Get a content blocker. Not nearly as powerful as uBO, but the best option if you want to stay with Safari. Do not get the app called “uBlock” , this is unassociated with uBlockOrigin ( read about the split here ), and is simply a content blocker with a big negative feature of having acceptable ads built in

As of the end of the Safari 12 series, I dumped using it as my browser. Why? Because Apple almost universally destroyed access to the best browser extensions. What meagre extensions that have replaced them are mostly junk by comparison, IMHO. I have had no regrets leaving Safari behind. It has its occasional uses. But if I need a clean (no extensions) WebKit based browser for some obscure reason, I instead use OmniWeb, which is still being maintained.

My browser of choice is currently Brave. It has all the excellent browser extensions. It’s fast, is consistently found to be on the cutting edge of browser security, and is rarely buggy. It’s based on Chromium with no Google gunk added.

I still keep both Firefox and the Tor Browser (which has a Firefos base) on hand for further special purposes. I also keep up-to-date with source Chromium as well as Waterfox, a more secured version of Firefox.

Do you mean popup windows? Or are they annoying pop-overs that usually appear when your mouse gets near the edge of the page. They say “don’t leave, sign up for our mailing list!” Those are designed to keep you from leaving the site.

I am not visiting porn sites, they are news, tech, science, art related and such.

No wonder and Apple is not alone. Google kicked also the uBlock Origin from Chrome for robbery.

No. This article has multiple blunders. It has an image stating “uBlocker”, which is wrong. The article also wrongly points at uBlock Origin for stuffing cookies, which it does not. The actual culprits are plain old louay uBlock and the ripoff named ‘AdBlock’, which is NOT the highly recommended same named app AdBlock from GetAdblock.com. uBlock Origin remains excellent and is also highly recommended.

Yikes, wish they wouldn’t advertised the change in extensions a bit more because I installed Safari 13 (after looking at the list of changes which didn’t mention extensions) and my 1Password extension no longer works which is a major PITA. Does anyone know how to downgrade Safari back to 12.1.2 (which I still have a copy of on another machine)?

Does your YouTube App restart when you use safari at times

Hello, Not sure where to put this so I’ll put it in the iPad section. I have an issue and it’s been this way for many years. I thought maybe it’s because Youtube was not updated or maybe a iPadOS bug but I’ve updated both many times since and it still occurs in the same way. So I’ll have Youtube App open and watching a video. Normal stuff right. Then I’ll pause the video or just swipe over to Safari/browser. Sometimes I’ll open Safari without swiping, it doesn’t seem to matter if I use a gesture or open it with it’s App icon. Now let me be clear it does not happen ALL the time. But it happens often. (seems to be linked to more “heavy duty” safari searches (i.e. going onto a website that is using more processing power?). Then when I go back to the Youtube app, it “resets” back as if I had closed it and opened it. Meaning I have to search for the video I was watching and find the part in the video that I was at to resume watching it from where I left it. Why is it like this? Why has it been this way for 5-6+ years? How can I fix it? Is it Youtube (Google/Android) trying to make Apple products more frustrating so that I switch over, or is it an OS problem (so Apple problem)? Do you have this issue? For me it happens usually 3-4 times a day because I use Youtube and Safari/Browser a lot. — For more context I use an iPad Pro 11 inch from 2018 and it works completely fine for everything else.

It sounds like iOS is suspending the YouTube app, and it sounds like the YouTube app doesn't handle suspension properly. Ideally when an app is suspended and resumed it'll restore itself to the same "place" it was originally in, but a number of developers take the easy way out and just dump you to the front page.

Apple Vision Pro natural input support comes to WebXR with Safari

Apple recently released visionOS 1.1 , bringing higher quality Persona avatars and enterprise support to Apple Vision Pro. The software update also introduces support for a significant advancement in immersive web experiences.

As UploadVR points out, WebXR on Safari for Vision Pro has been missing a key input method until now. Starting with visionOS 1.1, Safari introduces support for the default gaze-pinch control method for WebXR experiences.

The change is documented in detail in a WebKit blog post from this week:

Apple Vision Pro is here, and with it, a lot of excitement about the possibilities for WebXR in visionOS. Support is in progress, where you can test it today. WebXR now includes a more natural and privacy-preserving method for interaction — the new  transient-pointer  input mode — available for Safari 17.4 in visionOS 1.1. Let’s explore how natural input for WebXR works, and how to leverage it when developing a WebXR experience for Apple Vision Pro.

In the blog post, the WebKit team explains how Vision Pro’s natural input method wasn’t originally considered for WebXR:

The initial web standards for WebXR assumed all input would be provided by persistent hardware controllers. Since the natural input interaction model of visionOS differs from XR platforms which rely on listening to physical controllers and button presses, many existing WebXR experiences won’t work as intended on Apple Vision Pro. We’ve been collaborating in the W3C to incorporate support for the interaction model of visionOS into WebXR. And we’re excited to help the WebXR community add support to popular WebXR frameworks.

WebXR support on Vision Pro is disabled by default. However, users can enable the feature in Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Feature Flags. Learn more here .

How to Block YouTube on iPad (2024 Guide)

• To block the YouTube app on an iPad, go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Content Restrictions -> Apps > 9+.
• To block YouTube on Safari on an iPad, go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Content Restrictions -> Web Content -> Limit Adult Website -> Never Allow -> Add Website.
• You can also use Guided Access or set a time limit to restrict YouTube on iPad.

Method 1: Block YouTube App using Screen Time Settings

Note: While it’s an easy way to block the YouTube app on an iPad, it has a drawback too. Along with YouTube, this method will hide all the apps on your iPad that have an age rating of 12 or above. So, proceed only if you’re ready to bear with this.

• Open the Settings app on your iPad and visit the Screen Time section.
• You must set up Screen Time on your iPad if you haven’t already.
• Now, tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.

• Make sure the Content & Privacy Restrictions toggle is turned On. Tap on Content Restrictions .

• Here, choose Apps.

• Now, set the limit to 9+ or something lesser than it.

Going forward your iPhone will only show apps that have an age rating of 9+ or lower. Since YouTube has an age rating of 12+, it will be blocked on your iPad. If the YouTube app isn’t installed already, these restrictions won’t allow you to download it from the App Store.

Method 2: Block YouTube in Safari

• On your iPad, go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions.
• Here, tap on Content Restrictions and enter your Screen Time Passcode.
• Next, tap on Web Content to restrict YouTube on your iPad.

• Choose Limit Adult Websites . This option will block all adult websites in Safari, Google, and other browsers on your iPad.
• Since YouTube isn’t an adult website, it won’t be blocked by default. Under, “ Never Allow “, tap on Add Website , and type “youtube.com”.

Method 3: Set a Time Limit for YouTube

Here are the steps to block the YouTube app on iPad after a specific time limit:

• On your iPad, visit Settings -> Screen Time and choose App Limits.

• Here, tap on Add Limit and punch in the Screen Time Passcode.

• Now, tap on the small arrow next to Entertainment , choose YouTube , and tap on Next.

• Next up, set the desired time limit for YouTube and turn on the “ Block at End of Limit” toggle.
• Finally, tap on Add to make the changes.

• Go to Screen Time -> App Limits > Add Limit.

• Enter the Screen Time Passcode and choose Websites from the list of options.

• Now, tap on Add Website, type “YouTube.com”, and hit the Next option.

• Finally, set a time limit and tap on Add to save the changes.

Method 4: Use Guided Access to Restrict YouTube

• To use Guided Access on an iPad, go to  Settings -> Accessibility -> Guided Access .

• Here, turn On the Guided Access toggle.
• After this, go to  Passcode Settings  and  Time Limits  to choose a passcode and set a time limit for your guided session.

This is one of the best hidden iOS tricks that limits what you can see and what you can do on the screen.

Method 5: Remove YouTube and Block App Installs

Note: This method will hide the App Store icon on your device to prevent any new app downloads.

• From the Home Screen, long-press the YouTube app icon . This will bring up a quick action menu. Tap on Remove App -> Delete App -> Delete.

• Now, head to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions.

• Here, tap on iTunes & App Store Purchases and choose Installing Apps.

• Finally, choose Don’t Allow.
