Visa on arrival.

  • For detailed information regarding entry visas, please see these pages: link 1 , link 2
  • If your passport is from one of the countries on this list then you’re eligible for a single-entry visa on arrival. This is valid for a one-month stay in Qatar. Please approach an immigration counter, present your passport and pay your visa fee.
  • If you’re a resident of a GCC country (Gulf Cooperation Council) then you’re eligible for a single-entry visa on arrival. The visa will only be issued if your residence permit is valid for at least six months. Please approach an immigration counter, present your passport and pay your visa fee. Your visa will be valid for a one-month stay in Qatar and it can be renewed for a further two months.

Paying your visa fee

  • The easiest way to pay your visa fee is with your credit card or debit card, directly at an immigration counter. The visa fee depends on your nationality and type of visa.
  • If you’d like to pay your visa fee with cash, then you need to visit the designated bank counter (map) before you approach a passport control counter. The bank will charge a fee (QAR 25/USD 7) for processing your cash payment. All major currencies are accepted.

Getting a visa before you travel

If you’re not eligible for a visa on arrival (please see eligibility criteria above), then you need to arrange a visa before you travel to Qatar. This can be done at Qatari embassies around the world, or by enquiring with a hotel you have a booking within Qatar. The visa fee depends on your nationality and type of visa (click here for more details on visa fees). Please ensure you plan enough time for the visa to be processed.

If you’re flying with Qatar Airways, then you may be able to arrange a visa on arrival by booking a hotel stay for the duration of your visit. Please visit the Qatar Airways Holidays website for more information and assistance. Please note that the normal visa processing time is about two weeks, while the fast-track service takes about five to six days.

Things to avoid

  • Please don’t approach a passport control counter if you’d like to pay your visa fee in cash. The passport control counters can only accept credit cards and debit cards. Please use the designated bank counter for cash payment (map).
  • Please don’t commence your journey before confirming visa requirements. This will help minimise any inconvenience or delays during travel.

Important information for passengers departing from Hamad International Airport.

  • To find out if you need an exit permit, please visit the Hukoomi website
  • If members of your family are visiting you in Qatar, then any male visitors whose stay in Qatar exceeds one month are required to obtain an exit permit when exiting the country (female family members are exempt).

Clearing passport control

  • Scan your boarding card at the automated security gates just before the passport control area.
  • Keep your travel documents (passport, exit permit, boarding pass and ticket) ready to present to the immigration officer.
  • Dedicated lanes are available for First Class and Business Class passengers.

All Al Maha customers, special assistance travellers and unaccompanied minors receive priority processing when departing from Hamad International Airport.

  • If you’re travelling to a GCC country (Gulf Cooperation Council), then your passport must be valid for at least six months (three months for GCC citizens). Please make sure your passport meets this requirement, otherwise, your airline won’t be able to accept you for travel.
  • If you have any unpaid fines in Qatar, then you won’t be allowed to leave the country. Please make sure any unpaid fines are settled before you travel. You can also pay your fines at the Ministry of Interior office at Hamad International Airport (map).

Qatar Visa On Arrival: Requirements & Updates (2024)

Doha Guides Team regularly reviews this article to ensure the content is up-to-date and accurate. The last editorial review and update were on 02 February 2024.

Since August 2017, the State of Qatar has been allowing visa-free entry for citizens of more than 80 countries, making it the most open country in the Middle East.

After it was briefly suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19, Qatar’s visa-on-arrival service has resumed with some conditions. As of 2024, citizens of 90+ countries are eligible for a free Qatar Visa On Arrival.

This article explains all the requirements, eligible nationalities, application procedures, and visa renewal procedures, and answers the frequently asked questions about the free visa on arrival in Qatar .

Visa-Free Entry

Qatar visa on arrival new rules & updates, requirements for qatar visa on arrival, nationalities eligible for visa-free entry to qatar, special conditions for some nationalities, visa waiver for gcc citizens, documents checklist for visa on arrival passengers, qatar visa on arrival cost, procedure at the immigration counter, how to extend qatar visa on arrival, faq on qatar visa on arrival.

Visa-free entry is now the new term defining previously “visa on arrival”. According to Qatar Tourism, nothing changed except the name.

JANUARY 2024 STATUS

1. citizenship.

The visitor must be a citizen of an eligible country ( the list of countries is given below ).

2. Passport Validity

The visitor’s passport must be valid for at least six months .

3. Confirmed Return Tickets

The visitor must have a confirmed return or onward ticket.

4. Accommodation

The visitor should have a confirmed accommodation (clear address and contacts of the local host) or hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. This can be a regular hotel booking for travellers from most countries. For hotel booking, we recommend TripAdvisor as it has the largest database of hotel reviews.

However, for citizens of India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand and Ukraine, the hotel booking for the entire duration of the stay should be through the Discover Qatar website . Staying with a Qatar resident or booking directly with a hotel is not accepted for these nationalities (to avail visa on arrival).

A minimum of 2 nights should be booked through the Discover Qatar website. Cancellations within 48 hours of arrival are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.

Please note that even if you book the hotel for a longer duration, the initial visa issued will be for 30 days only. You need to extend that by visiting any MOI Service Center or the Airport Immigration office. The online extension may not be possible for these nationalities.

This requirement is only mandatory for travellers coming on a visa on arrival and not for family visit visas .

5. Health Insurance

As per the new law launched in February 2023, health insurance is mandatory for visitors who are staying for more than 30 days . Insurance is highly recommended even for visitors staying less than 30 days, but it is not mandatory.

Visitors can buy basic health insurance for QAR 50 (for 30 days) from any registered insurance company listed on the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) website .

6. Proof of Funds

From 10 March 2022, visitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran (using a visa-on-arrival facility) are required to have a valid international credit card or debit card . Cash of QR 5,000 will no longer be accepted (Belarus nationals can show USD 1,000 in cash).

  • For debit cardholders , a three-month bank statement is also required. There should be a minimum balance equivalent to at least QR 5,000 in your local currency.
  • The card should be under the name of the visitor . If you are travelling together as a family, one card (under the family head’s name) is enough.
  • This rule applies only to nationalities that require proof of funds (like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, etc.)

The countries under this facility are divided into two categories as below:

Category 1: Visa waiver for 180 days

  • Visa waiver valid is for 180 days from the date of entry.
  • Visitors can stay for a total of 90 days , either during a single trip or multiple trips.
  • The stay is not extendable beyond 90 days.
  • Requirements are a passport (with 6 months validity), return/onward flight tickets, confirmed accommodation (local host details or hotel booking), and health insurance (if staying for 30 days).

The following are the countries included under this category:

Visa On Arrival 90-180 Days Screenshot from Visit Qatar website

Category 2: Visa for 30 days

  • The initial visa is issued for 30 days from the date of entry.
  • For most countries, the stay can be extended for another 30 days .
  • This is a single-entry visa .
  • Requirements are a passport (with 6 months validity), return/onward flight tickets, confirmed accommodation, and health insurance (if staying for 30 days). Discover Qatar hotel booking and proof of funds will be required for some nationalities (explained below).

Travelling To Qatar

Hamad International Airport Lounge

  • A fingerprint scan may be required for some passengers.
  • The immigration officer would fix a small sticker on your passport. That’s it. Welcome to Doha!

If you are a citizen of a country eligible to extend the 30-day visa-on-arrival, you can do the renewal online.

Hi there I am holding a Kosovo passport with a Swiss Perminent Residenz status and will be in transit in Doha for 2,5 hours coming from Zuerich going to Male. Do I need a transit visa for this period of time in Transit or not at all? Thank you for your answer. Claudia

Hi Claudia, You don’t need Transit Visa is you are not leaving the airport.

can visit visa holder of Qatar exit by road ??? or should be return by air only ???

Hi Shahnawaz, They can exit by road also.

I have a 5 month old, he was born outside of Qatar. I want to return to my job with him but my husband is not a resident of Qatar. What do I do?

Hi Roseline, If your profession and salary is good enough (normally you would need QR 10,000 or Qr 6,000 with family accommodation), you can sponsor your baby. But you can apply for that only after reaching Qatar and will take few weeks. If your nationality is eligible, you can try visa on arrival for baby or Hayya A1 Tourist Visa.

I have a Canadian passport and I am planning to visit Qatar via land border from Saudi Arabia and then will drive back. Will I still be able eligible for visa on arrival? I am also not a resident in Saudi but I am here on a tourist visa and will have a flight from Saudi to Canada after visiting Qatar

Hi Sasa, Usually this is allowed. However, you may double-check with the Qatar Government Helpline at +974 44069999 to ensure the policy hasn’t changed.

Please update visa requirements. You are posting old information!

Hi Jana, We regularly confirm this information with the official websites (Ministry of Interior, Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism) and we believe they are all up-to-date. Please specify which part you think is wrong and we can check again.

Can I apply ‘on arrival visa’ 2 months before the visit.

Hi Paul, Visa On Arrival cannot be applied in advance. You can apply for Hayya Tourist Visa (A1) in advance. Here is how: https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/

as per your guide- south africans get a 30 day visa on arrival however latelythey have been receiving a 90 day visa on arrival? could you clarify if this is a multi entry visa and will this 90 day visa on arrival be permannently applicable to south africans?

Hi Khadija, We are not sure if there is a recent change in policy. According to official Visit Qatar website , South African citizens are eligible for 30 days visa free entry (not 90 days). There is another group of countries with 90 days visa, but SA is not include in that. For clarification, please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

I am an RP holder and I would like to book a hotel through Discover Qatar for my wife, daughter, and myself. However, the hotels listed on Discover Qatar only mention ‘room only for VOA (visa on arrival)’. Can I still book a hotel for three guests, including myself, even though I am an RP holder?

Hi Khan, Usually if a family is coming on visa on arrival, RP holder can add himself as a guest and stay with them. However there is a clause on DQ website that says “If anybody books these hotels who do not require them for these purposes, the hotels may charge an additional supplement at check-in.” So it is better to confirm with the hotel before booking.

What is Qatar Transit Visa Procedure, and Requirements in 2024?

You might need a Qatar Transit visa, If you’re flying somewhere and have a layover at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport. The answer to this question varies depending on various things, including the airline you have chosen, the sort of tickets you’ve booked, and if you want to leave the Qatar airport. There are several types of Qatar visit visas .

In today’s globalized world, international travel has become increasingly common, and transit visas play a crucial role in ensuring smooth journeys for passengers.

Here I shall explain whether a Qatar transit visa is required at Qatar Airport, shedding light on the current visa regulations, exemption criteria, and application processes

Qatar Transit Visa Updates

  • Since 2016, Qatar has implemented a free transit visa program allowing travellers with layovers of 5 hours to 96 hours at Hamad International Airport to apply for a complimentary transit visa.
  • Citizens of over 101 countries can get a Qatar visa on arrival .
  • You do not require a transit visa, if you do not plan to leave the Qatar airport.
  • It is important to note that the Qatar Airways Online Transit Visa Service is currently suspended .
  • GCC residents can obtain a Qatar on-arrival visa for GCC residents , if they meet the requirements.
  • Non-eligible nationalities can contact the Qatar Airways office or apply for an Online Tourist Visa through the Hayya portal.

These updates aim to provide a smoother transit experience for travellers passing through Qatar Airport.

What is a Transit Visa?

It is important to understand the concept of a transit visa. A transit visa is a temporary travel authorization that allows individuals to pass through a foreign country while on their way to another destination. In the case of Qatar, most transit passengers do not require a transit visa if they are staying within the airport transit area.

However, there are certain situations where a transit visa may be required, such as when passengers have separate tickets with different airlines or need to collect their baggage for connecting flights.

It is essential to check the specific requirements and scenarios to determine if a transit visa is necessary.

What Is Qatar Transit Visa?

It is an optional travel visa but it is important to explore its validity and duration, as well as the eligibility criteria for obtaining it.

What is Qatar Transit Visa

This discussion will provide valuable information for travellers who may be considering leaving the airport transit area for baggage or visiting Doha city during their layover in Qatar.

Visa Validity and Duration

Upon arrival in Qatar, transit passengers can enjoy the convenience and flexibility of the Transit Visa, which allows them to leave the airport transit area and explore the vibrant city of Doha. This visa is available to Qatar Airways passengers with a minimum 5-hour layover and is valid for up to 96 hours. It is free of charge and open to passengers of all nationalities. To give you a better understanding of the it validity and duration, here is a table:

With the Qatar Transit Visa, transit passengers have the opportunity to make the most of their layover and experience the sights and sounds of Doha before continuing their journey. You can not stay more than 96 hours under this visa type.

Eligibility Criteria for Transit Visa

Transit passengers who are planning to leave the airport transit area and explore Doha city may be eligible for the Qatar Transit Visa. This visa is available for Qatar Airways passengers with a minimum 5-hour layover and is valid for up to 96 hours. It is free of charge and open to passengers of all nationalities. Check the list to see if your country is eligible for a free Transit visa .

However, it is important to note that the Q atar Airways Online Transit Visa Service is currently suspended. Non-eligible nationalities can contact the nearest Qatar Airways ticketing office for assistance.

In addition to the transit visa, Qatar Airways also offers stopover packages that include hotel accommodations and city tours.

It is advisable to check the application status using the visa request number or email provided during the application process.

How To Apply For Qatar Transit Visa?

Passengers seeking to obtain a Qatar Airways Transit Visa should follow the application process outlined by Qatar Airways. Currently, the online service for applying for the transit visa is suspended . However, non-eligible nationalities can still contact the Qatar Airways ticketing office for assistance.

In addition to the transit visa, Qatar Airways also offers stopover packages that include hotel accommodations and city tours. It is important to note that the transit visa is free of charge and valid for up to 96 hours . To check the status of the visa application, passengers can use the visa request number or email provided ( [email protected] ).

The table below provides a visual representation of the application process:

Qatar Transit Visa Requirements and Application Process

The requirements and application process for obtaining a Qatar Transit Visa are essential to understand for travellers planning to leave the airport transit area or visit Doha city.

Passport Requirements

Ticket requirements.

It is recommended to apply for the transit visa at least 7 to 90 days before arrival. The current application process can be done at the Qatar Airways ticketing office or online, although the online service is currently suspended.

What to Do If Your Visa on Arrival Is Rejected?

If a visa on arrival is not obtained in Qatar, passengers can choose to continue their journey to the next destination at their own expense. Otherwise, they will be required to return at their own cost.

Transit Scenarios in examples:

The second question concerns the way you booked your flights. Let me take an example where you are travelling from New Delhi to Bangkok through Doha. Here are some possible situations:

  • Transiting through Doha on a single ticket with the same airline . The first possibility is that you made a single reservation (from New Delhi to Bangkok) via Airline Xyz’s website and paid only once. Despite this, the airline allocated two flights on the same airline: one from New Delhi to Doha on Airline Xyz and one from Doha to Bangkok on Airline Xyz. In the preceding situation, Airline Xyz oversees your transit. You are not required to pick up your checked-in luggage because it is going to be managed by the airline.
  • Transiting through Doha on a single ticket with two different airlines . The next situation is that you booked and paid for a single flight (New Delhi to Bangkok) via Airline X’s website. However, the airline assigned two flights with two different airlines: New Delhi to Doha on Airline X and Doha to Bangkok on Airline Y (which shares a code with Airline X). Airlines are in charge of your transit in the scenario described above. You do not need to pick up your checked-in luggage because the airlines will manage it. Since you will not be exiting through immigration, you will not require a transit visa for Qatar.
  • You are required to pick up your luggage from the Arrivals area and then check in again using the Departures area. Fortunately, all sectors are located in a single building (on different floors) at Hamad International Airport, so there is just one terminal. However, ensure that you leave adequate time between flights. In such instances, we recommend that you leave at least four to five hours between flights.

We hope you have found it informative. If you are planning to transit through Qatar, we wish you a safe and enjoyable journey!

Frequently Asked Questions for Qatar Transit Visa

A: Qatar Transit visa is free of cost and its validity is 96 ( 4 Days) only. You can not extend your duration under this visa type.

In conclusion, it is important for travellers passing through Qatar Airport to be aware of the current Qatar transit visa regulations and application process.

By following the necessary steps and meeting the passport and ticket requirements, travellers can ensure a smooth transit experience in Qatar.

Flights to the Maldives

Qatar airways.

On the way to the Maldives, we flew Emirates but they have since increased the number of points required for their flights and the taxes and fees. What will be cheaper and easier is to do what we did flying home and that was Qatar Airways Qsuite business class. This is what I would recommend for anyone who wants to do this trip in business class or even economy. Qatar is said to be the best airline in the world so if you have to be in economy for that long might as well do it in Qatar!

About to go to sleep for the night in my pjs from the airline!

Credit Cards For Flying Qatar Airways

American airlines credit cards.

American Airlines is part of the same airline alliance (One World) as Qatar Airways which means you can use your American Airlines miles to book Qatar flights right on the American Airlines website. It will cost you 70,000 AA miles to fly from the US to the Maldives in business class and 40,000 miles in economy (these prices are for one-way flights).

You can read this post about how I used American Airlines miles to book our flights home along with how I booked the rest of my trip.

American Airlines doesn’t partner with any of the major transferable points programs but they do have credit cards with both Citi and Barclays. Here are my favorite cards that earn AA miles:

Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard : At the time of writing you’ll earn 50,000 AA miles after spending $2,500 in three months. The $99 annual fee is waived for the first year. I love that the annual fee is waived that first year!

Citi AAdvantage Business Platinum Select : Currently, you’ll earn 65,000 miles after spending $4,000 on this card in 4 months. Once again, the $99 annual fee is waived for the first year! If you put $5,000 of spending on the card instead of the required $4,000 you’ll have 70,000 points needed to book a one-way flight in Qsuite!

Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red Mastercard: At the time of writing you’ll earn 50,000 miles after you make one purchase on the card. That’s it, one purchase! I bought a pack of gum and a box of Bandaids when I got this card for myself. You will have to pay the $99 annual fee the first year as well. I have seen this card go up to 60,000 miles many times so you may want to wait and see if it goes back up to 60,000.

Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Business Mastercard: I highly recommend this card if you have a business or side gig! I got this one and used it for one of our flights. At the time of writing, you’ll get 60,000 miles after spending $1,000 in 3 months plus if you add an authorized user to the card and they make one purchase you’ll get another 10,000 points. Just what you need to get a business class flight in Qsuite!

Credit Cards that Transfer to British Airways

We recently wrote about how you can now use British Airways Avios to book Qatar Qsuite . This makes those credit cards that have British Airways as a partner much more valuable if you want to go to the Maldives. These include:

  • Capital One Venture Credit Cards
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards Credit Cards
  • American Express Membership Reward Credit Cards

British Airways will charge you 85,000 Avios one-way in business class from the US to the Maldives plus around $200 in taxes and fees. If you are looking to do economy it will be 42,500 Avios plus around $130.

Of these credit card programs listed above the ones that interest me the most are:

Chase Sapphire Preferred:   This card has a bonus of 60,000 Ultimate Rewards. You’ll get the points after spending $4,000 on the card in 3 months.

Capital One Venture X : With this card, you’ll earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 in 3 months. You earn 2 points for each dollar you spend so if you spend $5,000 on the card you’ll have the 85,000 points needed to book Qsuite. If you refer a spouse or partner and they have never had any Capital One cards you will earn another 25,000 miles. This card has quickly become my second favorite card, right behind the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

American Express Gold Card : This card has a standard offer of 60,000 Amex Membership Rewards.

In addition to cards that transfer to British Airways, you could also just get the Chase British Airways Visa Signature Card.  That makes it even more simple.

Credit Cards that Transfer to Qatar Airways

Citibank credit cards that earn ThankYou Points transfer directly to Qatar. The Citi Premier Card is our favorite card for earning ThankYou Points. At the time of writing this card has a bonus of 60,000 miles. What we really like about this card is that it earns 3x the points at gas stations, dining out, shopping markets, on flights, and hotels. This card also has a lower annual fee than some of the others at $95.

Hotels in the Maldives

Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott all have hotels in the Maldives that you can book with points.

If you have a stash of Hilton points you might want to check out the new Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and Spa . It opens in September 2022. You can book an overwater pool villa for 110,000 points a night. If the idea of taking a seaplane freaks you out then I have good news for you, this resort is a 20-minute boat ride from Male.

What I would do, and hope to do in the future, would be to book the Hyatt Alila Maldives . This property opens in April but is bookable with points right now. It is a category 7 Hyatt hotel so prices will be 25,000, 30,000, or 35,000 points a night depending on when you visit.

Hyatt Alila Maldives

I would also look into the Park Hyatt Maldives . This resort is a little older but I have heard nothing but great things about it. It is also a category 7 hotel so will run from 25,000 to 35,000 points a night. With Hyatt being a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards and having lower redemption rates than the other hotel brands it makes it a great choice!

I would recommend getting a Chase Sapphire Preferred and a Hyatt card . You can transfer those points from your Sapphire Preferred directly to Hyatt making it a great choice! Also, look into referring your spouse/partner to those same cards. There are more cards that offer Hyatt points than just those two. We’ll send you are PDF download with all the cards that offer Hyatt points. Just click here , drop in your email, and we’ll send it to you.

We stayed at the Le Meridien Maldives using Marriott points. We loved this resort and would totally recommend it if you have a bunch of Marriott points. Prices here range from 50,000 to 70,000 points a night. I recommend using the flexible dates calendar and searching one night at a time. When booking with Marriott you’ll get the 5th night free when you book 4 nights on points. I would recommend signing up when Marriott cards are offering 100,000 points or more. You can check out this pos t to see what the current offers are.

Step-By-Step Cards to Get

Assuming you are starting from scratch here is a step-by-step outline of what I would do to get this vacation on points. I’m going to show you how to get the points to fly Qatar Qsuite but if you plan to fly economy you won’t need as many points. If you aren’t starting from scratch you can use this outline to help you fill in those missing pieces. Keep in mind there are many different ways to visit the Maldives on points. This is just one way.

  • Open the Chase Sapphire Preferred
  • Refer spouse/partner to Chase Sapphire Preferred and get a referral bonus
  • Combine your points to one account
  • Transfer the points to Hyatt to book Hyatt Alila Maldives

If you already have those cards or want to stay longer then get our guide to more Hyatt points .

  • Open Citi AA business card  for myself and my spouse
  • Open Barclays AA business card for myself and my spouse

That would be enough points for two round-trip tickets on Qatar Qsuite. Check out this post to see how to qualify for a business card before you write off the possibility of business cards for yourself.

Here is an option if you don’t qualify for business cards.

  • Open the  Chase British Airways Visa Signature Card
  • Refer your spouse/partner to the card
  • Open the Capital One Venture X
  • Refer your spouse or partner to the card (to get a referral bonus this has to be their first Capital One credit card).
  • Transfer points from Capital One to British Airways to book roundtrip flights on Qatar Qsuite

Alternatively, you could open the   Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard and the Barclays personal card  along with one of those cards listed above and have the necessary points as well. You would book one flight directly on AA and the other through British Airways.

Bottom Line

By opening some of these best credit cards for a Maldives vacation you can make your dream vacation a reality! There are a lot of ways to get the points to do this trip. This is great news because it means this doesn’t have to be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Will you be opening some new cards for a Maldives vacation?
