If you’re like most travelers to the United Arab Emirates, you’ll never venture beyond the safe embrace of its skyscraper-strewn cities. But that’s not you , right? You’re ready to put the pedal to the metal and discover the wealth of spectacular scenery that lies an easy drive from Dubai — from desert plains and dramatic fjords to lush oases, lofty dunes and more.

On the practical side, you’ll find first-rate roads, cheap fuel and fuss-free car rental. So summon your inner explorer, grab your International Driving Permit — a must-have here — and leave Dubai in the (sand) dust on one of these unforgettable road trips.

Desert: From Dubai to Liwa

The most rewarding of road trip s in Dubai is along sand-swept highways to remote Liwa — one of the Arabian Peninsula’s largest oases, on the edge of the Empty Quarter (the world’s largest contiguous sand desert). While Emiratis and expats associate this awe-inspiring part of Arabia with legendary explorer Wilfred Thesiger — the first to cross these colossal dunes on camel and foot — modern-day adventurers will recognize the 650-foot-high dunes from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” filmed here in 2014.

Distance/Duration: 230 miles/3 hours 45 minutes

Tip: Read Thesiger’s “Arabian Sands” (1959) for an appreciation of this inhospitable land.

Fjords: Dubai to Khasab, on the Musandam Peninsula in Oman

OK, so the Musandam Peninsula is not technically in the UAE (it’s an enclave of Oman). Still, this drive from Dubai to Khasab is one of the most jaw-dropping on the Arabian Peninsula. From the UAE-Oman border, the winding road hugs the coast — and each turn reveals yet another tranquil bay where fishermen mend nets and locals cross the beach to buy fresh seafood from the boats.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/3 hours

Tip: Stay a night in Khasab for a dhow cruise and dolphin spotting — and, if you’re brave, an edge-of-your-seat, four-wheel-drive tour toward the heady peaks of 6,260-foot Jebel Harim mountain.

Bonus tip:  When hiring a car in Dubai, make sure the rental agency allows their vehicles to be driven into the Omani enclave — some companies don’t.

Oasis: Dubai to Al Ain

If you do only one road trip in the UAE, one of the best places to visit near Dubai is laidback Al Ain. Put the car in cruise control on the smooth, straight stretch of blacktop and focus on spotting some camels. (Those “ships of the desert” are tricky to detect against the tan-colored dunes.) Once in Al Ain, known as the Garden City for its lush greenery, you have handsome forts to explore, date-palm oases to discover and, at Hili Archaeological Park , Bronze Age tombs that will blow your mind.

Distance/Duration: 122 miles/90 minutes

Tip: Don’t miss the giddy, winding drive up Jebel Hafeet mountain — 4,098 feet! — for sweeping oasis and desert views.

Mountains: Dubai to the East Coast

The Dubai-to-Hatta section of this route offers some of the most sublime vistas in the country, from camel-dotted plains to russet-colored dunes — including Big Red, a famed rise popular among adrenaline junkies for sandboarding, quad biking and dune bashing (high-speed dune driving). At the high-altitude enclave of Hatta, the parched, purple-hued mountains are best appreciated from the town’s historic watchtowers. The spectacular drive north from Hatta along the east coast offers more scorched peaks skirted by white-sand beaches. (Take the coastal road that winds through Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Al Badiyah and ends in Dibba.)

Distance/Duration: 203 miles/4 hours.

Tip: En route to Hatta, take a detour from the crossroads town of Al Madam and head to Al Shuwaib (15 miles/20 minutes) to see Arabian oryx (a large antelope) and gazelles frolicking on the dunes.

Sea: Dubai to the North Coast

The route to the seaside village of Ras Al-Khaimah doesn’t offer the scenic drama of other drives, but this trip from Dubai  is more about the destinations than the journey. Call into cities and towns along the way, and you’ll discover old wooden dhows bobbing in the harbor in Sharjah, stunning palm-lined sandy beaches in Ajman, restored wind-tower houses in Umm Al Quwain, atmospheric old souks in Ras Al Khaimah, and, in the arid mountains inland, centuries-old Portuguese forts and watchtowers.

Distance/Duration: 74 miles/90 minutes.

Tip: Take two hours to stroll Sharjah’s historic quarters, and an hour each in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al-Khaimah.

7 of the best road trips from Dubai

Having just wrapped up our adventure holidays in the UAE, can’t stop raving about the fabulous road trips from Dubai: between Khasab’s rugged coastlines where we swam with turtles and sailed with dolphins; to the deserts and majestic Hajar mountains and Jebel Jais; to legendary days out with Ferrari World in Yas island, to art filled Abu Dhabi and chilled white sand beach of Saadiyat island; the Emirates have spoilt us once again so much in 2 weeks! Our UAE road trip itinerary started conveniently in Dubai airport, a mere 7 hours flight from London to blue skies and balmy weather; thereafter Ras Al Khaimah based for 6 days (for Oman, desert and mountains adventures); Abu Dhabi for 5 days and to wrap up, 4 days in Dubai.

And yes it is difficult to leave behind Dubai’s glam Palm hotels and funky Palm West Beach parties; but there is so much more to UAE to explore and indulge in! Here are some of our favourites Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary collected over the years!

1. Ras Al Khaimah is so much more peaceful than the busy big city of Dubai, and if you are like us, in need to recharge first before having lots of fun, this is the right place. The is most Northern emirate that spreads across 2500 sq kilometres. Our base was Hayat Island and Marbella villas , right next to boutique newly open Intercontinenta l; we loved chilling by the sea or kids splashing by our villa’s pool and working out at the gym, playing table football and pool; dining and wining at Levant in the evening as well as sipping cocktails by Noho .

We’ve also explored the area, wining and dining is good, sunset cocktails by Waldorf Astoria happy hour; indulged into Karma Kafe (by Buddha Bar) ‘s fuming cocktails, sushi and ceviche; tested Hayat Island casual eateries and markets. It makes a wonderful pied a terre for further adventures as well, and if you are like us, 6 days are much needed!

2. Khasab Oman daytrip , sailing on traditional Arabic dhow, swimming with turtles and finding dolphins is a must for 7 of the best road trips from Dubai! A trip from Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah is relatively easy with an early start; we drove in our own car to Oman border where we have been greeted by Khasab Tour guys for the crossing (our rental car specifically excluded driving in Oman and for 1 day on this occasion we thought best to go with the terms rather than shop around for a more generous geography for the rental car).

Worked out very well, a beautiful sunrise by the mountains, a quick border cross UAE-Oman, 8:30am we were in Khasab sipping Arabic coffee! One magic day by Musandam fjords, back to majestic Hajar mountains, sailing with dolphins and swimming with green turtles, a  generous lunch by boat with barbecued freshly caught local fish, salads, hummus and few other Omani dishes!

3. While Jebel Jais is located in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, it warrants its own road trip from Dubai. UAE’s highest peak has stunning views but it is also home to some exhilarating rides: the world’s longest zipline and the Jais Sledder! On this trip we had to content ourselves with sunrise and sunset roadviews as the heavy showers affected the fun!

4. The desert! A 45-minute scenic drive from Dubai International Airport, Al Wadi Nature Reserve nestles within the 500-hectare glorious indigenous wildlife such as antelopes, Arabian oryx, camels and gazelles. We had dinner under the stars at the Farmhouse in here and loved Ritz Carlton Bedouin-style oasis.

5. The boys favourite adventure day out was Ferrari World by Yas Island , the kids labelled it as legendary ! Fun parks and rides are all at a different level in here and we found frankly 1 day not sufficient to exhaust so many fabulous options: 9 years old favourite was the  Turbotrack with a smile 😅; 6 years old favourite racing GP junior and clip and climb; the other half favourite Ferrari simulator; my favourite, the karting and Formula Rossa junior.

Ferrari world was a wonderful adventure of rollercoasters and ziplines inside the sleek Yas Mall, dedicated article coming soon!

6. Abu Dhabi ! Somehow the life in UAE’s capital flows gentler here, the pace is sweet and few days recovery after the NYE parties were great! We could not decide on a single base, so we ended up with 2 fantastic days at Fairmont and thereafter 3 days at Ritz Carlton . We have raved extensively about Abu Dhabi in the past, our dedicated article in here .

Louvre Abu Dhab i is a must on Dubai and Abu Dhabi itinerary: Jean Nouvel’s architecture is magnificent and sunsets especially gorgeous in there; the permanent collection is filled with glorious antiquities (that our Percy Jacksons fan adored), whilst the children museum visionary and engaging.

The other must see of Abu Dhabi we reckon is Sheikh Zayed Mosque : the largest in UAE, its architectural grandeur meant to reflect the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with a contemporary art twist. Swarovski crystals chandeliers and mosaic marbles are just some of the highlights; it makes a stunning sight at sunset – we soaked in daily from our Ritz Carlton glam pied a terre!

7. Saadiyat island, a natural island we felt in love with 10 years ago,  500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi island. We love the white sand, chilled vibes and in 2023 we found St Regis beach as stunning as we left it, Turquoiz now a fabulous Buddha Bar , as good as Buddha Bar Mykonos  by Santa Marina!

7 fantastic options for road trips from Dubai and one great UAE road trip itinerary, we have done it within 10 days, one could easily make 2 weeks out of it though ! And once we soaked in all the beauty and exploring, we found the pool parties still there by W Palm and bohemian Palm West Beach !

Although the UAE is full of beautiful spots, we have discussed a few important destinations you should never miss. Read this article to explore some of the remarkable road trips from Dubai. 

1. Dubai Desert:

An hour’s drive from Dubai city is the incredible Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, part of the Arabian Desert. Its area is approximately 87-square-mile, 5% of the total area of Dubai with diverse species of flora and fauna. 

Enjoy the camel ride and observe wildlife in the national park of the United Arab Emirates. You can participate in desert activities, experience sandboarding, and archery. Enjoy the grilled meal and then stay for the night in camps. 

2. Abu Dhabi:

Abu Dhabi is the priority place you should visit on a road trip from Dubai. It is among the top family road trip destinations in the UAE. A trip to Abu Dhabi is everlasting joy and entertainment. Sheikh Zayed Mosque is popular across the world due to its unique archaeological beauty.

While driving, you will have a golden opportunity to look at different villages and camel farms. Other attractions in Liwa include Mezairaa Town and Sheikh Hamad Auto Museum.

Liwa Date Festival is the most important event there. Different kinds of dates growing there are displayed in this festival. If you are having a tour these days, never forget that festival. Visit different forts and especially the Liwa Fort.

5. Hatta: 

In the highland of the Hajar Mountains, there lies Hatta. Therefore, Hatta is not only known because of its beauty but also for hiking in the Hajar Mountains. Besides hiking, you can go mountain biking, paragliding, kayaking, etc. 

Wadi Hub Center at Hatta offers many adventure games for you. Also, there lies a 3000 years old village known as Hatta Heritage Village. Other tourist attractions include Hatta Fort Hotel, The Hatta Hill Park, and Hatta Rock Pools. 

6. Ras Al Khaimah: 

RAK is an adventurous and mountainous area in the UAE. It is approximately 113 km from Dubai and represents scenic beauty as well as dunes. The most famous Jebel Jais is located here. If you love sports, you can relish paragliding, horse riding, and ziplining at Jebel Jais. 

Besides, this city is apart from Dubai and other busy cities. You will feel real relaxation there and indeed it is the best recreation point for professional people. Dhayah Fort lies in the Dhayah Valley that gives a beautiful top hill view. 

Historical buildings are also of special significance, especially Ras Al Khaimah National Museum. Also, check out the Iceland Water Park and the Khatts Spring.

7. Al-Ain – The Garden City:

About 2 hours from Dubai, is one of the best tourist attractions spots, Al-Ain. Wonderful palm trees, lush vegetation, enchanting mountains, and dynamic history; what’s not to admire? Al-Ain Palace Museum is famous for its ancient collection of artifacts. Other notable tourist attractions in Al-Ain include the Hilton Al Ain and Danat Al Ain Resort.

Also known as “Garden City”, it is the best family road trip in the UAE. Kids will enjoy the fantastic Wadi Adventure with white water channels and surf pools. Don’t forget to visit Al-Ain zoo to enjoy Safari and see a variety of exotic birds and animal species. In the eminence of Jebel Hafeet, there are many ancient tombs. 

8. Khasab, Musandam:

It’s important to bear in mind that city driving in Dubai especially can be tough. There are large multi-lane freeways that move FAST, multi-lane roundabouts, truck lanes and fast lanes to think about. Some top pointers for playing it safe on UAE roads:

Although you can set out from anywhere in the UAE to commence your road trip, we will assume you are starting from Downtown Dubai when calculating time and distance.

Starting with the most popular and easy to reach day trip destination from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital city is home to stunning architecture and thrilling adventures.

The number one attraction in the UAE is visiting the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Other architecturally brilliant buildings we would recommend include The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and Qasr Al Watan, the country’s Presidential Palace.

The historic Oasis City of Al Ain, also known as the Garden City has a reputation as the birth place of the UAE, where the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed was born.

The drive itself to Al Ain is a relatively straight forward freeway drive from Dubai in around 90 minutes; its the fascinating adventures that await when you arrive make it best to have your own car.

The centre of town is dominated by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, a 1,200 hectare shaded park with over 147,000 date palm trees and demonstrating the traditional falaj watering system. Other historic sites dating back to the bronze age are dotted around the city outskirts.

The Al Ain Zoo is also highly acclaimed as one of the cities best attractions. With the addition of a safari a few years ago this makes for a fascinating desert adventure that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre within the zoo is one of the best educational and history resources in the country if you want to learn about the ancient heritage and physical geography of the Arabian Peninsula.

Plenty of other museums also wait you in Al Ain; for history buffs the Al Ain Palace Museum and the Al Jahili Fort are must-stops. You can also check in to the the more modern Qasr al Mawaji , birth home of the former UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa.

The highlight for drivers, though, is the climb to the top of Jebel Hafeet, the tallest point in Abu Dhabi Emirate. The steep drive from Green Mubazzarah (a park with natural springs) at the mountain to the peak will take around 30 minutes each way, winding to the top and offering spectacular views over to Oman.

Where to stay: Although a little dated these days, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet on top of Jebel Hafeet affords you some incredible scenic views. We like the Al Ain Rotana for a good city stay close to the Al Ain Oasis, or adventure seekers will love the glamping options at Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

• Distance: 335 kilometres / 208 miles
• Time Needed: full day – overnight

If you’re up for an Arabian Nights style adventure into the desert dunes then this road trip into the Liwa Desert is for you.

It’s not called the Empty Quarter without reason, swathes of desert which make up the vast majority of the land mass of the UAE are only accessible via a few well maintained paved roads that take guests into a complete different side of the Emirates.

Those with a 4WD and the right equipment can take on the vast dunes or for a more sedate experience, try one of the luxury resorts of glamping options to experience the incredibly star lit nights and days.

If you feel that any of the landscape looks familiar, the Liwa desert is part of the backdrop for the planet Jakku in Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

NB it’s not recommended to drive in the Liwa Desert in the peak heat of the day, you should look to explore early morning and late afternoons/evenings. Off-roading is only for those who really know what they’re doing sand driving.

Where to stay : Unmissable is a night in Anantara Qasr al Sarab Desert Resort , the ultimate of luxurious desert experiences in the UAE (or anywhere in he world, for that matter). Those on a smaller budget could try spending the night near Madinat Zayed in the Tilal Liwa Desert Retreat , or try the new glamping experience at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa .

Top Tip : Visiting the western region during the Al Dhafra Festival (dates vary annually but usually around December/January) you could get the opportunity to see a camel beauty pageant! No laughing matter, this is serious business and one for the most unique experiences in the UAE where you will see owners competing for millions In prize money at the coverted Al Mazayan. Watch camels being traded on Millionaires Row and soak in the atmosphere and this traditional Bedouin event

• Distance: 197 kms / 122 miles

How do you fancy taking on a whole new country during your road trip from Dubai? The drive from Dubai to Khasab on the Musandam Peninsula sees you at the very tip of the Arabian peninsula, just 40 kms from Iran over the Strait of Hormuz!

Despite driving much of the way through the United Arab Emirates, Musandam is actually an exclave of Oman. You will be crossing an international border, so visas and passports will be required and proof of vehicle ownership with permission to cross the border is required (make sure if you’re hiring a car that this is included!)

Whilst the drive through northern Ras Al Khaimah can feel a little industrial, the moment you cross the Al Darah border, you enter the most incredible coastal journey. The highway winds its way around the rocky khors.

Once you are in Khasab, kick back and relax as life moves a lot slower here. The regional capital is very small, but the starting point of fabulous cruising into the khors (mountainous fjords). You can join a dolphin-watching tour or hire your own private dhow for a serene adventure out on the water, even find your own private beach.

Top Tip: Avoid heading out on this journey Friday afternoon and coming back on a Sunday night as you are you’ll likely encounter long queues at the border crossing when local residents also take to the road. Remember accommodation options are limited so its highly recommended to pre-book if you want to stay overnight in Khasab.

More Tips For Visiting the UAE

• Check you have the right visa for entering the UAE. Many nationalities can enter the UAE with a free Visa on arrival but don’t get caught out; equally if you’ll be crossing into Oman be aware most nationalities will require a Visa .
• With the fast-pace nature of construction in the UAE, roads can change quickly! Navigation apps are generally up to date, and you could get by with just Google Maps, though many locally prefer to use Waze as the best navigation app for the UAE ( Google Play | App Store ).
• Be mindful that you can lose mobile reception once you leave the big towns and major freeways, we recommend you keep an offline map on your phone.
• If heading beyond the cities, remember to fuel up when you can. Despite being an oil-rich country, you may be surprised there are no fuel stations when you need one in the more remote corners of the country!

The best road trips from the UAE to plan this winter

There is no better way to experience a country than taking to the open road, and the UAE and Oman are both blessed with an expansive network of asphalt. Most are new and well lit at night and offer even terrain for exploring new landscapes and landmarks , and giving both drivers and passengers a different perspective on life in the UAE and Oman that big city living cannot provide. What is more, the UAE and Oman are easy to drive between: just a quick land border to cross and necessary car insurance to buy, and new adventures lie ahead.

Coast to coast: Dubai to Kalba (133km)

This coast-to-coast journey from Dubai to the UAE’s east coast, is great for a weekend away and takes you directly past the interesting archaeological site of Mleiha in Sharjah , 74kms from Dubai, an ancient Iron Age settlement with a myriad of small caves and Mars-like rocky landscapes dotted between deep orange dunes to enjoy. Visitors can hike to the top of the majestic Fossil Rock in around three hours, across 6km, which can be modified for all levels of fitness, but is quite steep so bring plenty of water. The visitor centre offers a detailed history of the site which dates back to the Paleolithic period showing migration from Africa. There is also a restaurant for a pit-stop serving everything from coffee and snacks to full meals. Next up, drive over to Kalba, around 45 minutes’ or 59km drive away on the E84, for a range of accommodation options from Kingfisher Lodge with its ultra-luxury tents between the ocean and the mangroves, to more budget options nearby. Kingfisher Lodge is a natural haven, set on a protected nature reserve with a turtle nesting site, flanked by the ocean on one side and the mangroves on the other. On day two, get up early for a kayaking trip in the mangroves (the hotel can connect you to private operators) and on the way back home, a roughly 90-minute drive depending on where in Dubai you live, take a stop off at the nearby Fujairah Fort, only five minutes away. It's one of the emirate’s oldest forts, dating back to the 16th century, and visitors here can gain an insight into the UAE's past as it fought off colonial invasion. The fort comprises three circular and one rectangular tower, elevated at a height of nearly 20m above sea level, boasting views across the ocean and the city’s skyline.

Dubai to Buraimi, Oman (145km)

An accessible weekend away, less than two hours’ drive from Dubai, or roughly 145km, Al Ain is a useful spot to overnight. The oasis city, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, offers lots to see and do from ancient forts to the UNESCO-listed oasis, home to over 147,000 date palms and an example of ancient irrigation systems or falaj. The birthplace of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE, Al Ain has plenty of accommodation options from budget to five star. Sunset on Jebel Hafeet is also well worth the drive but takes around 30 minutes from the base to the top. Take a picnic and watch the sun set over the mountains and city before settling in for the night. Get up early the next day to go hiking around the beautiful Buraimi area of Oman where blue pools and bright greenery, as well as very manageable hikes around its rocky terrain. await. Hire a local guide to help navigate the best sights such as the water canyons safely, meaning novices can concentrate on the rocky scenery across the Hajar Mountain range. On the way home along the E66, stop at the many colourful stalls dotting the motorway to buy locally grown fresh produce from pomegranate to mangos. You can buy car insurance for Oman at the border when you get an entry visa. Many nationalities have visas on arrival but check online before you travel.

Journey into nature: Abu Dhabi to Jebel Akhdar in Oman (454km)

For a longer trip , hit the road from Abu Dhabi out to Jebel Akhdar in Oman via Al Ain. Though a direct drive along the E22 can take around five hours (or six from Dubai), there are plenty of reasons to slow down and enjoy the ride. From camels to goats, farms to peaking sand dunes, the journey is coloured with natural beauty spots. With all the offerings of Al Ain’s museums, forts and UNESCO listed oasis, it’s a shame to rush. There are only two hotels at the top of Jebel Akhdar, an Alila and Anantara, where visitors can escape into the Grand Canyon of the Middle East with mountain views for miles, 2,000m above sea level. Located on the beautiful Green Mountain, the views from here spectacular. However, both are five star, so plan ahead for the best deals. The drive up the mountain requires a 4-wheel drive but the hotels offer free shuttles. Make sure to stop at one of the roadside cafes for a delicious gahwa or karak chai, to fuel up for the journey ahead.

The wonders of the UAE's East Coast

This trip explores the UAE's mountain-dotted eastern coastline and can be as long or as short as you choose. Starting in Hatta, roughly one hour from the centre of Dubai, or 135km, there is a wealth of outdoor adventure to explore from mountain biking to hiking trails, all with well-marked routes. Accommodation includes Sedr Trailers on the banks of the dam, mountain top cabins (Damani Lodges) or bubble tents (Hatta Dome Park), as well as the five-star Hatta Fort Hotel. With so much to do, it's easy to entertain the whole family for a weekend. From here, drive roughly an hour up the E102 up to Fujairah (70km) where the likes of the 16th century Fujairah Fort offer a chance to step back into the UAE’s past. A stop in nearby Khor Fakkan, a sleepy town on the Gulf of Oman just half an hour away (25km), is a must, with its blue waters and picturesque coastline. Whether wandering its restored souk, enjoying a coffee at one of the corniche’s trendy eateries, or hiking on one of the area’s several marked trails, it is a rewarding and lesser known stop. From here, journey up to the country’s northern-most emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, now famed as the Middle East’s adventure capital due to its array of both high and low octane activities. The 107km drive up the E18 takes less than 90 minutes and once you arrive, RAK, which boasts both coastal mountain terrain, offers thrills such as the world’s longest zipline to hiking, and is a nature-lover ’s playground.

Capital to capital: Abu Dhabi to Muscat (498kms)

A journey deep into the heart of the desert, this cross-country trip is dotted with a wealth of history and splendid views. Best planned for at least a two- or three-night trip, it’s roughly five hours from capital to capital along the E22 (498km), best broken up with an overnight in Al Ain, with its trove of cultural sites. From remote Bedouin villages and farms such as Wakan and Bald Sayt to old forts, the route to Muscat is one which snakes through Bedouin history and culture. The Omani capital, Muscat is home to a host of both old and new cultural sites from the Sultan Taboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House to the nearby pre-7th century Nakhal Fort, a hilltop fortress that once protected the city from invasion. Muttrah Souk is a great spot to shop for local handicrafts, spices and antiques and the turquoise lake of the chilly Bimmah Sinkhole, a 20m deep natural wonder not-to-be missed. Roughly an hour and a half outside the city from the Muscat-Sur Highway (128km), it is worth taking the time to explore and swim in its bright turquoise natural waters, tucked away in the mountains. • Jebel Jais – Offering what some consider to be the highest peak of the UAE at 1892 metres, the mountain offers mesmerizing views of beautiful mountains and magical valleys. It is a popular tourist attraction of Ras Al Khaimah. 
• Dhayah Fort – The bay of Dahyah comes with its fertile oasis and gardens. However, the main attraction of the spot is the 19th century fortress built on a conical hill top. Located in the backdrop of steep mountains and palm gardens, the unique fort makes for a must-stop spot.

3. Fujairah

One of the major emirates of the UAE, Fujairah is also the ultimate scuba-diving destination of the Emirate. The road trip to Fujairah from Dubai makes for some memorable sightseeing options. From exploring the Wadi Wurayah in the Hajar Mountains to witnessing spectacular views from the UAE’s Grand Canyon, you can enjoy an adventurous route. 

Once in Fujairah, you will find numerous activity options and attractions making it another excellent day trip options around Dubai. From parasailing on the Khorfakkan Beach – Fujairah’s most popular beachfront to deep sea fishing at Dibba, scuba diving at Shark Island, kayaking between the Al Rafisah Dam mountains, snorkeling around Snoopy Island, hiking through Wadi Wurayah, the emirate offers a variety of activities to indulge in. 

Distance from Dubai: 127 km

Drive from Dubai: 1 hr 27 min 

Activities: scuba diving, snorkeling, beaches, climbing, kayaking, hotels, restaurants and cafes .

4. Liwa 

Liwa aka the Empty Quarter’ is a desert settlement and is a spot best-suited for those interested in exploring the endless roads in a desert. There are numerous amazing roads in the UAE and roads in the Empty Quarter is certainly among them. While the vast desert offers scenic views and a calming environment, the route to Liwa is also a beautiful one. The golden sand mountains alone would tempt you to make stops every now and then. 

However, the roads may sometimes be subjected to sandstorm and are covered with dust so you better drive carefully. Other major attractions for adventure lovers and explorers are the heritage sites, forts, Tal Mireb – a 300-meter high sand dune and Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort in Al Dhafra, renowned for its beautiful sun rise and sun sets.

Furthermore, the Liwa Oasis is another attraction with villages appearing as dots. Fun Fact: Star Wars: The Force Awakens was shot here so if you are a fan too, may the force of sand be with you! 

Distance from Dubai: 332 km

Drive from Dubai: 3 hr 28 min 

Activities: Sightseeing, forts, oasis, hiking through the desert, architecture and culture

5. Hatta 

Hatta, near the Oman border, is a perfect spot to relax on a weekend and makes for an ideal weekend road trip from Dubai. The place is rife with such spectacular vistas as striking natural pools, striking mountains, beautiful picnic spots, kayaking trips and exotic resorts and hotels. Moreover, people can take the Dubai to Hatta bus to reach the majestic location.

You can also explore the surrounding areas of Hatta and go on an off-roading adventure. A sturdy 4×4 SUV is recommended for such a journey as it will ensure better grip, more ground clearance and a smooth driving on the rocky or loose gravel road surfaces. 

Distance from Dubai: 137 km

Drive from Dubai: 1 hr 30 min 

Activities: Off-roading, scenic mountains, pools, hotels, kayak, picnic spots and more.

These are all the major options for a weekend trip from Dubai. Make sure that you have all the essential tools like flares, flashlights and jumper cables and tick all the boxes of the road trip preparation checklist .

For most of these trips, you are recommended to opt for a reliable off-roading car. The Best Road Trips You Need to Take in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates may not be a big country, but there’s plenty to be seen in between its desert dunes and beautiful shores. The best part is that everything is just a short drive away. So whether one is looking to indulge in some water adventures or simply relax in a luxurious resort in the middle of the desert, all that’s needed is a car, gas and some snacks for the road. The journey just might be better than the destination.

1. jebel al jais.

For those who enjoy hiking, trekking and camping, there’s no place in the UAE better than Jebel Al Jais. Located right in the corner in between the UAE and Oman, Jebel Al Jais is the highest point at the country, at over 1,800 meters. Perhaps one of the things that makes this spot so popular is the shocking temperature difference compared to the rest of the country, which is known for being extremely hot. Here, temperatures can get as low as -5 degrees Celsius, so it’s important to pack accordingly.

2. Snoopy Island

Fujairah is one of the seven Emirates of the UAE, and the only one on the east coast. Located in between gorgeous beaches and mountains, this is definitely a must-see on a road trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. One of the main attractions in Fujairah is Snoopy Island, where you can snorkel.

3. Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is soon to be the UAE’s main destination for all adrenaline lovers. This is because the longest zip line in the world will be located in this Emirate. However, Ras Al Khaimah was popular among residents and tourists much before the zip line was announced. Dubai to Salalah Road Trip Planner: Everything You Need to Know

This is your practical guide to visiting Salalah from Dubai (UAE) by road . You can also use this Dubai to Salalah road trip planner if you are driving to the Dhofar region from other UAE Emirates or Muscat, Oman.

Salalah, the coastal capital of Oman’s Dhofar region is the most remote destination in the Sultanate. Yet, its unparallel natural beauty often compared to the tropics of the Middle East attracts thousands of visitors, especially during the monsoon ( khareef ) season which lasts through the months of June till August or even late September. 

If you are planning on visiting Salalah by road from the UAE or Muscat , you are bound for a very long but definitely rewarding drive.

Here I am sharing my handy tips for driving to Salalah from Dubai based on my experience: driving distances, road conditions, which roads to take, 2WD vs 4WD cars, overnight stops, border crossings, as well as road safety tips.

Dhofar region and Salalah by road: a guide to driving from Dubai to Salalah by car

During my Dubai to Salalah road trip , I drove in a loop first crossing the desert lands and then returning via Greater Dhofar’s coastal road. A total of 4000 kilometers driven. It was the longest road trip I have ever done within one week.

I have planned this UAE-Salalah drive based on information I found online. Yet I wish I knew a few more things before putting together my Salalah itinerary. Thus, I hope that this Salalah from Dubai by road guide will help you plan your drive efficiently.

Driving to Salalah from Dubai (UAE) by road: which route to take? 

There are two routes you can choose to follow when driving to Salalah from Dubai (UAE) or Muscat (Oman):

• A shorter boring route – inland through the deadlands (literal nothingness). 
• A longer scenic route – driving from the east coast to the south coast of Oman (a more scenic route). 

    1. The shorter route from Dubai to Salalah

The shorter route from Dubai to Salalah is approximately 1220 k m and takes around 12.5 hours of continuous driving. This does not include the time required to cross the UAE-Oman border which varies depending on the traffic. If you are driving from other Emirates you will have to add an hour or two depending on where you are starting your journey from. 

This “faster” route can be divided into sections between a few major towns along the way:

• Dubai to Al Ain Hafeet (Mezyad) border – 160 KM, 1 hour 50 minutes
• Al Ain- Nizwa- 260 KM, 2 hours 40 minutes
• Nizwa-Haima – 380 KM, 3 hours 20 minutes
• Haima-Salalah city – 400 KM, 4 hours 50 minutes

The “short” route to Salalah from UAE runs through the hinterlands of Oman. Only around 250 kilometers between the Oman-UAE border and Nizwa offers a truly scenic drive through the mountains. The remaining 800 kilometers in Oman belong to road 31 . Almost all this stretch till you reach the entrance of Salalah is an empty flat desert with no tourist attractions around. 

If you are traveling from Muscat to Salalah, you will drive 1000 km for approximately 9.5 hours. You will face a similar scenario: the 150 km drive from Muscat to Nizwa is nice and scenic, then you will continue on the same boring route 31.

I have never driven through such nothingness before. 

Nonetheless, one thing that I found fascinating on this long Dubai to Salalah driving experience was an almost instant change of scenery from the dry, grey flat desert to green rolling hills covered by the blanket of clouds. You would think that you appeared on another completely different continent. Only the gazing camels will remind you that you are still in the Middle East.

    2. The long coastal road to Salalah

The long route to Salalah from Dubai totals almost 1900 Km and takes 20.5 hours of continuous driving to complete it. The road follows Oman’s east coast along Arabian Gulf all the way to the south coast of Oman next to the Arabian sea. Although the coastal parts of the drive are beautiful, there are sections on this route that are winding inland through the desert and have a similar deadland feel as the above-mentioned route 31.

The coastal route can be divided into the following sections:

• Dubai to Muscat – 450 Km, 4.5 hours
• Muscat to Sur – 200 KM, 2 hours 20 Minutes
• Sur to Duqm – 520 KM, 6 hrs
• Duqm to Salalah – 670 KM, 7 hours 20 minutes

Is it worth taking a coastal road from dubai or muscat to salalah .

Yes and no. When planning my Salalah road trip, I read online that the coastal road is amazing and I was so fixated on driving it on the way back from Salalah to Dubai. However, it was way too much effort for very little reward. We budgeted 3 overnight stops along the way for this 20-hour long drive. 

I would advise taking the coastal road to Salalah only if you have plans to visit Masirah Island or, sugar dunes (4WD only). Otherwise, it is not worth the effort. 

The coastal road section between Mirbat fishing village and Sinaq Canyon (Wadi Sinaq) is truly scenic, though. Thus, if you want to explore it, I would recommend it as a day trip from Mirbat. 

The stretch between Wadi Sinaq and Duqm is more or less a deadland just like route 31. While the road from Duqm to Sur is nice but not exciting enough to add 6 hours to your journey. 

Dubai (UAE) to Salalah (Oman) border crossings

• If you are heading directly to Salalah from Dubai, or from other emirates in UAE, for the shorter route you should take the Mezyat border in Al Ain (also known as the Hafeet border).
• If you are also planning to visit Muscat on the way, then you should cross the Al Wajajah border in Hatta. 

Note: UAE-Oman borders get busy during weekends and public holidays. Therefore, if you are driving on one of those days make sure to start your journey early, or account for an extra hour or two for border crossing.

Oman visit visa for your Salalah road trip from Dubai (UAE)

As a GCC (and UAE) resident you no longer need a visa to enter Oman, as long as your residency is valid for a minimum 3 months before the trip. As a tourist in the UAE, you will have to apply for Oman visit visa. 

You can do it online yourself via the Royal Oman Police website, or get it on arrival at the border (subject to nationality). Alternatively, you can use ivisa services. Those guys will get the Oman visa sorted for you for an extra fee.

Splitting the UAE-Salalah journey – where to spend the night?

The drive from UAE to Salalah is very long and travelers usually choose to break the journey with one overnight stop when taking the “shorter” (12 hours route) or 2-3 stops for a longer coastal route. 

For the inland (shorter) route to Salalah, you have two options for an overnight stop:

• Nizwa (or any nearby village, like Birkat Al Mouz, Bahla);
• Haima on road 31.

Staying in Nizwa

I would recommend spending a night in Nizwa town or another nearby village because you can book a nice hotel via  booking.com , and also do some nice sightseeing in the afternoon/evening before the long journey the next day. 

On the way to Salalah from Dubai, we stayed in Birkat al Mouz- a mysterious abandoned mud village 30 minutes away from Nizwa. It was one of the best experiences on our Salalah road trip. 

You can also stay in Nizwa which is a bigger tourist town and naturally has more accommodation options than Birkat Al Mouz. You will also get a chance to visit the wonderful Nizwa fort and Souq-a great cultural attraction on your road trip.

If you choose to stay in Nizwa, your first leg of the journey will take around 5 hours including time for border crossing (taken there is no queue). That being said, you will still have 8 hours left to drive through the deadlands the next day before you reach Salalah. 

• Recommended accommodation in Nizwa
• Heritage Inn Nizwa – a beautiful hotel in a traditional rustic Omani house, 100 meters from Nizwa Souq and 400 meters from Nizwa Fort. Price range: $$
• Omani Guest House – steps away from Nizwa fort in an old quarter of the town this amazing traditional Omani house offers fantastic hospitality, and also a beautiful terrace overlooking the town. Price range: $$
• Antique Inn – decorated in traditional Omani style, this hotel offers a beautiful garden area and an outdoor pool. Located just 200 meters from Nizwa Fort, and 400 meters from the Souq. Price range: $$
• Date Palm Inn – a more contemporary lodging compared to the ones above but still with lots of authentic elements and a cozy garden. Price range: $$
• Recommended accommodation in Birkat Al Mouz (30 minutes from Nizwa)
• Bait Al Sabah Heritage Inn & Cafe – set between the ruins of ages-old Birkat Al Mouz mud village, this is a renovated cozy hotel with a fantastic coffee shop and a beautiful terrace overlooking the mysterious abandoned town. Price range: $$.

Staying in Haima

If you aim to stay in Haima you will cover more distance on the first part of the trip. However, there is no way to book accommodation online in Haima. You have to just show up and take whatever is available.

There are around only 3 roadside motels in the area to choose from. Pretty basic and quite pricey for what they offer (over 15-20 OMR). 

Haima itself has nothing exciting in terms of scenery or sightseeing. It is just a small town in the middle of nowhere. 

The hotels we passed by reminded me of Tarantino’s movie From Dusk Till Dawn. If you have seen it too, you know the drill. Thus I am glad we chose to stay in Nizwa and not Haima. 

Where to break your trip when driving the coastal road to Salalah?

When taking the coastal road to Salalah, depending on your travel plans, you can break the journey into 3 parts with 2 overnight stops, or even more if you are exploring Masirah island, or even camping along the way. 

On our Salalah road trip, we took the coastal route on the way back and had 3 overnight stops: in Duqm, Sur, and in Nizwa.

If you are passing Muscat, then it would be a great option to stop overnight and explore the capital of Oman. This could be an alternative to stopping in Sur unless you want to do some sightseeing around Sur (like Wadi Shab , or Wadi Tiwi, or Bimmah sinkhole on the way).

Where to stay on the coastal road from Dubai to Salalah road

Staying in muscat.

There are plenty of accommodation options to stay in the capital. Below are my suggestions for some great choices for different budgets:

• Accommodation suggestions in Muscat
• Fort Guesthouse – superb location at the beachfront of Muttrah corniche and Fort, features a lovely terrace and humble Omani-style accommodation. Price range: $-$$.
• Grand Millenium Muscat -a home away from home, located close to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Price range: $$
• Al Bustan Palace -stunning coastline set against Hajar mountains, dreamy pools, and a stretch of private beach- great for romantic getaways and the best beachfront views. Price range: $$$.
• Chedi Muscat – one of the most beautiful hotels in Muscat featuring modern Arabic architecture, beachfront, 100-meter long pool, yoga, and pilates classes- the perfect place for relaxation. Price range: $$$.

Staying in Sur

Sur is a small characteristic port town that makes a great stopover on the way to Salalah. There aren’t as many hotels as in Muscat but enough to make it a comfortable night over. Here are my top picks for Sur:

• Sur accommodation suggestions
• Sur Grand Hotel – The best-rated in the area, 6 KM from the center of Sur featuring nice beach views directly from the window! Price range: $
• Sur Plaza Hotel – we stayed here-another decent option for the area with old-school film vibes and clean and spacious rooms. The hotel is located inland but has a pool for those who want to refresh on a hot day. The food served at the restaurant was average though. Price range: $-$$.

Staying in Duqm

Duqm is an industrial coastal town midway from Muscat to Salalah. There is nothing particularly interesting apart from Duqm cliff which you could visit at sunset if you stay in Duqm. Interestingly, Duqm has some high-end hotels by the sea, which means this town attracts its own audience.

• Grand Flora Hotel – Located in the busy part of Salalah city this hotel offers a reasonable rate to have a clean simple room to sleep in. They also have a cafe and restaurant which is good value for money and an easy choice instead of looking where to eat in the city. Price range: $
• Belad Bont Resort – located on the West side of Salalah, this resort offers a terrace, swimming pool, modern rooms, and a restaurant with a well-rated breakfast. Price range: $$
• Al Balled Resort by Anantara – Located at the beachfront oasis, this is Salalah’s first villa luxury resort which will provide you with a full-on luxury experience and is the perfect place to stay if you plan just to relax. Price range: $$$

Do I need 4WD to drive to Salalah? 

Before my road trip to Salalah, I always believed that we absolutely need a 4WD to get around the Dhofar region in Oman. The great news is that after doing some research and taking the road trip in 2WD myself, I can now confirm that many beautiful sights around Salalah are still accessible with a small sedan car. Thus, it is not a must to have a 4×4 if you want to visit Salalah. 

Nonetheless, 4WD, or at least a higher clearance vehicle would be very useful and convenient as it opens up more opportunities to explore the area offroad. Also, it might be more comfortable for a long-distance drive.

This particularly is important for those travelers who are planning on wild camping. There are plenty of wonderful wild places which are only accessible with an off-road vehicle. 

During our trip, for example, we had to skip a couple of wild beaches because we did not have a suitable car to reach them.

Dubai to Salalah Gas Stations

The frequency of petrol stations on the way from Dubai to Salalah depends on the area.

Make sure to fill up the full tank in Nizwa before heading down south of Oman on route 31. Refill in Haima and you should be able to reach Salalah unless you are driving Lamborghini. In any case, after Haima, there will be 3 or 4 stations before you reach Thumrait- another small town just before Salalah.

On the coastal road, you can find gas stations every 100-150 km or so. As a rule of thumb, you will always find petrol in every town you pass. 

Tip: search for “petrol stations” on Google Maps and you will get them mapped out for you, so you can plan accordingly. 

Petrol price in Oman

It seems like petrol prices in Oman did not get a memo about the global petrol price surge and remained one of the lowest in the world. Which is great news for us, travelers. At the time of our visit, one liter of petrol was 0.621 USD (0.63 EUR).

Safety tips for driving from Dubai to Salalah

Avoid driving to salalah at night.

Some of you may be considering the option of covering 12 hours’ drive in one shot without overnight stops. While you could do it, I strongly advise against driving at night in Oman, unless you absolutely have no choice. 

Most of the roads you will have to drive through do not have street lights. The presence of animals makes it dangerous. Also, the monotonous road 31 can easily make a driver fall asleep (even during the day, let alone at night).

If you absolutely have to drive at night, calculate the time wisely and leave Dubai extremely early, like 4 am or even earlier. UAE roads have lights almost everywhere, so it will be much safer to drive at night in the Emirates than in Oman. This way you can reach Salalah in the evening before sunset. 

Having a couple of drivers take turns could be helpful, though. Still, I do not recommend driving at night.

Be aware of sandstorm alerts

As you will be driving through the desert, be aware of sandstorm possibility. There are warning signs all along route 31 indicating shifting sands. On an extremely windy day roads might get covered in sand which might make roads slippery, and worst case scenario even impassable for a regular 2wd (but this would be quite an extreme scenario). 

Make sure you get your car checked before taking it for a long-distance road trip

It is strongly advisable to get your car checked and serviced before you go for such a long drive. In case of a breakdown (and I have heard this is quite common on Salalah road trips), it will be hard to get road assistance as you will be in the middle of nowhere. Thus, don’t take chances and only drive a well-maintained car. 

Road conditions on the way to Salalah

Roads in Oman in general are well maintained. They are some of the highest-quality roads I have ever driven. Roads in Oman are also well-signposted in both Arabic and English. 

On your way from Dubai to Salalah, you will have a mix of one-lane, two-lane and on a rarer occasion, 3 lanes paved roads. 

On the long route from Nizwa to Haima, the road is a 2-lane highway which makes it very easy to drive it. 

Just before Haima town, the two-lane highway 31 becomes a one-lane road that you share with upcoming traffic. Every 10 kilometers or so there is a lay bay if you need to stop safely. 

Although route 31 is virtually traffic free, most of the passing cars are big trucks. 

Some of them are notoriously slow driving below 60 km/h, thus watch out when approaching from the back at a high speed and overtaking. 

Around 100 km from Thumrait town to Salalah the road again is 2 lane-highway. 

Meanwhile, the coastal road is mostly one lane road. However, Sur -Muscat highway 17 is dual-lane. 

Roads in Salalah and other provinces ( wilayats ) in Dhofar Governorate

Paved roads in Salalah like the rest of Oman are in great condition and connect all the main towns in the area. Also, many attractions are accessible via paved roads.

Nonetheless, the west side of the Dhofar region is mountainous and the roads here are steep and windy. 

You will also be sharing them with hundreds of camels who are the bosses in the area and roam freely anywhere they feel like. Thus, be attentive, especially if driving after sunset. 

We had to drive at night in the Salalah area (west and east of Dhofar) a couple of times. It was only for an hour or two, and it was no fun. Camels, cows, and goats continuously appear in the middle of the road which keeps you constantly on the edge. Also, roads have no lights in most places, unless you are close to the town. 

Take extra care when driving in foggy conditions

The climate in Salalah during the Khareef season is similar to the tropics. Fog is one of the fascinating features of the Dhofar area in Oman. But it also makes driving more difficult, especially at night. Add camels and cows to the equation and it becomes extra thrilling. 

Military checkpoints on the Salalah route

Dhofar region and Salalah are close to the Yemen border. Despite the unstable situation in Yemen, the south of Oman is safe to travel to. 

There are, however, a couple of military checkpoints along the west side of Salalah on road 49. One of them is just before Shaat mountain, and the other one is near Dhalkut, the last village before the Yemeni border. 

On the east side of Salalah, there is one military checkpoint near Hasik village on road 49.

When traveling, make sure you have your passports and car registration documents as well as your driving license. The checkpoint crossing procedure is hassle-free. You will be asked where you are going or where you are coming from and that is it.

I must admit, however, that seeing soldiers with guns and tanks parked on the side of the road does look intimidating and uncomfortable. Nonetheless, people guarding these checkpoints were polite and friendly.

Oman SIM card 

For longer trips, I always buy an Oman SIM card so I can easily use Google Maps to navigate around. 

You can purchase an Omantel sim card at the Al Wajajah border. I am not sure if it is available at the Mazayat border in Al Ain, but chances are it is. If not, you can get one in Nizwa Mall. 

What should you carry for your Dubai Salalah Road trip :

• Power banks and cables to charge your phone.
• Enough water supply and snacks for the long empty sections.
• Spare tire.
• Cash (Omani Rials) as some remote shops and petrol stations might not accept cards.
• Preload google maps if you do not have internet (although getting between main towns is easy by following road signs).

Dubai to Oman Road Trip

If you are living in the UAE a Dubai to Oman Road Trip should be on your bucket list. Dubai to Muscat is around 550km by road and takes about 5-6 hours including the border crossing. Read on to plan your 6-day Dubai to Oman road trip itinerary.

If you are looking to spend less time, maybe a 4-day itinerary on your Dubai to Oman road trip then you could cut a day in Muscat and the final stop in Jebel Akhdar. Jebel Akhdar is well worth a visit but could be done on a trip by itself where you can spend a few days.

What visa do I need to go to Oman?

If you are a resident in the UAE you can now get an e-visa to Oman before leaving home. This will save time during the border crossing. All GCC residents qualify for an Oman GCC Residence e-Visa, you just need to apply in advance. Allow 3 days for the visa to come through to be on the safe side. You can apply on the Oman E-Visa website, just register first then apply for the visa.

I haven’t travelled to Oman since the e-visa has been put in place so I can’t advise first hand how straight forward it is. However, from reading information online and speaking to others who have done it, the process is pretty simple.

Day 1 – Dubai to Muscat (3 nights)

The first stop on a Dubai to Oman road trip would naturally be Muscat . Muscat can be reached in around 5 hours crossing at the Hatta border. Apply for an e-visa before travelling. Once across the border, expect 3-4 hours of long, straight roads with minimal petrol stations – fill up Hatta side!

Day 2 and 3 – What to do in Muscat

Muscat is the capital of Oman and offers an array of activities. Plenty to keep you busy for 3 nights, especially as the first night will be mainly taken up by the Dubai to Oman road trip.

Make sure to include a day on a boat trip dolphin spotting or over to Dimaniyat islands where you can go snorkelling with turtles. We had an amazing morning on Dimaniyat island, you can read our full review here. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is beautiful. Spend an evening in Mutrah at the Souq, Corniche and Fort. If you are a golfer then play at Al Mouj golf course , number 2 golf course in the Middle East.

Muscat has a plethora of hotels from simple hotels, mid-range, luxury up to super luxury. Here are some of our best picks:

Top Luxury Muscat Hotels

If you are looking for a true luxurious escape whilst in Muscat, check out the relatively new Jumeirah Muscat Bay . A stunning hotel from the Jumeirah group. There is also the renowned Chedi Muscat and The Ritz Al Bustan Palace for incredible 5* properties.

Luxury Muscat Hotel

We stayed at the gorgeous, luxurious 5 star beach resort at InterContinental Muscat for our most recent trip to Muscat. They have beautiful, sea-view family rooms, amazing facilities and lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. This is a licensed hotel as well so it was lovely to enjoy a cocktail at sunset.

Mid Range Hotel

We also spent two nights at the stunning 5* Grand Millennium Hotel Muscat. This hotel is perfect for large families with villas, apartments and interconnecting rooms. Rooftop pool, mall access and city centre location with affordable prices are things we loved about this hotel.

Budget Hotel

We have also stayed at the Ramada Encore Muscat Hotel which is a budget hotel without compromising on quality. Good sized family rooms with great Italian restaurant and rooftop pool in a city centre location with budget prices.

You could probably spend just 2 nights in Muscat if you have limited time. However, after the drive and long drives to follow we wanted to relax and slowly explore the city, enjoying the slower pace to Dubai.

Day 3 – Muscat to Ras Al Jinz (1 night)

Muscat to Ras Al Jinz will take 3 hours, direct, on your Dubai to Oman road trip. However, you will want to stop at some incredible wadis on the way.

Stop 1 – Bimmah Sinkhole

Have an early breakfast and get on the road quickly heading to your first stop at Bimmah Sinkhole. This is a popular stop so the earlier the better. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from Muscat.

Parking is outside what looks like a small children’s play area, don’t be put off! Walk through the park and you will come to the swimming hole. If you have swimming shoes, bring them. Watch out for the little fish nibbling your feet. Make this a short stop as Wadi Shab, the next stop is a longer stop with a hike.

Stop 2 – Wadi Shab

Next stop on your Dubai to Oman road trip will be Wadi Shab , only another 25 minutes from Bimmah Sinkhole. As always, our advice is arrive early – parking is limited.

Make sure you have change when arriving in Wadi Shab as you will have to pay the boat man 1 Omani Rial to cross from the car park to the wadi (a 2minute journey).

Once across the wadi there is a 45min-1hour walk to reach the main Wadi Shab. It is pretty straightforward along a path with some climbing over large boulders.

The scenery we saw on our walk was amazing, beautiful blue/green water, tall cliffs and green spaces.

Turtles or no turtles?

From Wadi Shab it is another 2 hour drive to Ras Al Jinz. If you have previously experienced seeing turtles during other travelling experiences you could omit Ras Al Jinz from the trip. There is a Guest House in Wadi Shab which is well rated on booking.com. Alternatively, you could continue down to Sur which is 1.5 hours. The Sur Grand Hotel has a good booking.com rating. Staying here would break up the journey to Wadi Bani Khalid the next day.

Stop 3 – Ras Al Jinz (1 night)

The southern most point on our Dubai to Oman road trip.

Ras Al Jinz is famous for green turtle spotting who return year after year. Be aware that the prime time for turtles laying their eggs and hatching on the beach is July – October (the hottest months). If you visit outside of peak season you may not even see any turtles so plan this into your trip accordingly.

We went in April and were advised to go to the night viewing, we wanted to go to the sunrise session but were told not to because of the time of year. It was packed with bus loads of tourists and we were all waiting til around 10pm until a turtle was spotted. It’s about a 15minute walk in complete darkness across soft sand so would not be advisable for elderly or immobile people. You are asked to be silent and people were shushing our boys when they were whispering and asking questions. It might not be the best experience for kids under 5.

Seeing the turtle was a pretty memorable experience, the turtle was huge. However, we have been spoilt by seeing turtles hatch naturally in Sri Lanka and Thailand. So this felt like a bit of a tourist factory. Although, I have since heard that the sunrise viewing is magical. I think this would be a better option for young kids.

If you have experienced turtles hatching before then I would consider leaving out this part of the Dubai to Oman road trip.

Where to Stay in Ras Al Jinz

Ras Al Jinz Reserve Hotel rooms are quite pricey so we stayed in the basic Turtle Guest House within walking distance. We picked up a dominos pizza on the drive through Sur and kept it cheap and simple!

Day 4 – Ras al Jinz to Nizwa (1 night)

The road from Ras al Jinz to Nizwa is another long one at around 4 hours. We broke the journey up with a bit of a detour to Wadi Bani Khalid which took 2 hours.

Stop 1 – Wadi Bani Khalid

Wadi Bani Khalid was our favourite out of the wadis we visited on this trip. A very accessible, family-friendly wadi. Short walks, a little bit of scrambling over rocks and gorgeous, clear, blue water to swim in.

After Wadi Bani Khalid it is another 2 hours to get to Nizwa. Many people choose to go back to Muscat at this point but we think Nizwa should be included on your Dubai to Oman road trip.

Day 4 – Nizwa

Nizwa was previously the capital of Oman, it is a town that still retains traditions and culture. It is a walled town containing souks, heritage hotels, small coffee shops and most famously, the fort. A perfect place to experience Omani hospitality and absorb yourself in their way of life.

Where to Stay in Nizwa

We stayed at the stunning Antique Inn , within the town walls. A true traditional Oman hotel with the bonus of a swimming pool to relax for a few hours before another drive the next day.

Day 5 – Nizwa to Jebel Akhdar (1 night)

The shortest drive of the trip at only around 1 hour so make sure to spend some time chilling out in Nizwa before setting off. As you enter Jebel Akhdar there is a police check of insurance and driving licence. You will also need to be driving a 4×4 to pass the police check and enter the mountain.

Jebel Akhdar is a series of mountain peaks offering temperatures considerably cooler that Dubai. Making it an often sort after escape location during summer months. The scenery is wonderful, small villages, traditional ways of life and fresh air make it worth the drive during your Dubai to Oman road trip.

Where to Stay in Jebel Akhdar

If you are looking for a true traditional Oman hotel then consider staying at The Suwgra . Formerly known as Cliffside Hotel, it is an ancient village that has been transformed into a hotel. It has been built into the cliff and you will need to do a short 20minute hike down the wadi and back up the other side. Don’t worry your luggage will be taken over by zipline – check this out .

Day 6 – Jebel Akhdar to Dubai

Expect this last drive to take around 6 hours including the border crossing through Al Ain. A long, straight road. Get the ipads charged, podcasts downloaded and fill up on snacks. We considered stopping for a night in Al Ain on the way back however decided we would just want to get home.

There are many lovely options in Al Ain like the Rotana or Radisson Blu . Al Ain is great part of the UAE to explore, you can drive up Jebel Hafeet and even stay at the Mercure Grand and include a trip to Al Ain Zoo.

From Riyadh to Dubai

VISION EQXX once again delivers groundbreaking energy efficiency.

March 15, 2024 – On its third long-distance road trip over 1,000+ kilometres, the VISION EQXX technology programme demonstrated that even the Arabian Desert is no obstacle to energy efficiency.

On a challenging route profile encompassing busy city streets and open desert, the pioneering test vehicle delivered electric power consumption of 7.4 kWh/100km (8.4 mi/kWh)¹. This equates to an equivalent of around 0.9 l/100 km or 282 MPGe for a petrol-fuelled vehicle. In ambient temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit), the VISION EQXX beat its own previous best by a considerable margin.

With an exceptional consumption of just 7.4 kWh/100 km, the VISION EQXX continues to provide valuable data for ongoing development of advanced electric efficiency technologies. As expected, all systems performed perfectly in the desert conditions, handling challenges such as road surface finish and temperature as well as dust with ease. Third VISION EQXX trip tests efficiency in the Middle East

The starting point for the efficiency drive on the Arabian Peninsula was the Mercedes-Benz Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The destination was the recently opened Mercedes-Benz Brand Center in Dubai, UAE. The route of 1,010 km (627.6 miles) was completed in a total driving time of 14 hours and 42 minutes. Having left Riyadh at 4:15 a.m. with a full battery, the VISION EQXX still had 309 kilometres (192 miles) of range left when it arrived in Dubai at 7:57 p.m. The route incorporated urban and sub-urban sections in Riyadh and Dubai with heavy traffic as well as lengthy highway sections across the open desert.

Further chance to test technology features such as thermal management and solar roof

The VISION EQXX has twice proven its ability to cover well over 1,000 kilometres on a single charge ( Sindelfingen – Cassis and Untertürkheim – Silverstone ). The purpose of this third road trip was to maximise efficiency in all areas and examine system performance under extreme desert conditions. Of particular interest in the dry desert heat of up to 34 degrees Celsius was the car’s advanced thermal management. The intelligent on-demand system kept the electric drivetrain and the cabin cool. The air conditioning system was operational during the trip with minimal negative impact on energy efficiency thanks in part to the multi-source heat pump. A further developed version of this heat pump is integrated into the Concept CLA Class unveiled at IAA Mobility 2023. This close-to-production concept previews the model family based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) and benefits from wide-ranging technology transfer from the VISION EQXX.

The relentless desert sun also gave engineers the opportunity to examine closely the performance of the solar roof on the VISION EQXX. The 117 solar cells are used to power many of the ancillaries, reducing the energy drain on the high-voltage system and further improving overall efficiency. On the drive to Dubai, the system harvested 1.8 kWh of solar energy, adding approx. 24 km to overall range. Research continues into the series-production benefits of this technology. Also relevant for comparative analysis with previous test drives were the data gathered on the influence of wind and sun on efficiency. As well as the temperature of the sun, measurements even include the angle and direction of sunlight.

An important global ambassador for electric mobility that pairs efficiency with luxury

More than two years after it was unveiled, the VISION EQXX remains an eye-catching crowd puller. During that time, it has also covered 23,340 kilometres (14,503 miles) testing its pioneering electric technology under a wide range of demanding real-life conditions. In a region often associated with super sports cars and full-size SUVs, the compact dimensions and sleek proportions of the VISION EQXX drew intense interest. The slippery drag coefficient of just 0.17 pairs with a sophisticated fastback design to represent a highly desirable ambassador for electric mobility. Likewise, with charging infrastructure still sparse in many parts of the world, this was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate long-range electric efficiency under real-life conditions. Another important aspect of the Mercedes-Benz electrification strategy.

In addition to the two previous road trips in Europe, Mercedes-Benz has also taken the VISION EQXX to audiences in the US and China. This has given key global target groups the chance to experience for themselves a realistic, road-going example of luxurious and sustainable electric efficiency.
