The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood is an American alternative rock/dark pop band that formed in Newbury Park, California, USA in August 2011. The band consists of Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, and Mikey Margott. Brandon Fried (drums) was kicked out of the band on November 15 2022 after groping allegations. Bryan Sammis (drums) left the group in January 2014. In the end, all you need to know about The Neighbourhood is in that music and in those words. There are more facts, more pieces of the puzzle, more information to unveil. But what's the fun in being given the full picture when you can slowly discover it for yourself? It's better to leave some mystery lingering. Because, after all, it's that unknowing that brought The Neighbourhood to people's attention to begin with.

The Neighbourhood Releases Album and New Tour Dates

LA band The Neighbourhood’s new album is now available for purchase. 

The release of their second album Wipe Out also marks their release of new single of the same name. The self-titled track embodies the soft romantic nature of the whole album. To further that atmosphere the album was recorded at the beach and includes sounds of  the ocean throughout the album.

The new album has already garnered some attention from media sources. Stereogum said Wipe Out  “… So deftly does it navigate the seams between genres and the dark back alleys of the soul.”

The Neighbourhood has also recently released a new music video for their song “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” The song and video explore the themes of the loss of innocence and death. Most of the imagery is very dark, sometimes set inside an open coffin with a single light shining down on singer Jesse Rutherford. 

Several new tour dates have also been added to their U.S. and European tour. Tickets are available for the new dates on the band’s site .

The Neighbourhood: Where Are They Now?

The Neighbourhood has become a very popular band ever since their songs “Sweater Weather” and “Daddy Issues” went viral on TikTok in November of 2020. “Sweater Weather” reached 1 billion streams on Spotify by July 2021, while “Daddy Issues” reached 500 million at around the same time. But after they released their single, “Fallen Star” on October 1, 2021, the band stopped releasing music. 

Then, the unexpected happened. The Neighbourhood announced their hiatus on February 22, 2022 on an Instagram post on their story. The post mentioned that the band will not be able to perform their expected European tour in 2022. Some of the instagram post read, “…but for our own health and well-being we’re going to take some time for ourselves in the coming months.” Two members of the band had just gone through breakups, so this was likely a reason for their sudden hiatus.

Many fans were devastated after this announcement, some even assuming that the band would break up. The hiatus was pretty unexpected, mostly because their songs were very popular at the time, so their next single would definitely do well.

So you may be wondering… where is the band now?

Well, Zach Abels is one of The Neighbourhood’s guitarists. In October of 2022, his mother commented on a fanpage’s instagram post, the comment reading, “Don’t worry they will be back! They are in the studio as we speak. Look for a new song coming out in December!” The comment got over 700 likes and 60 replies, along with excited fans posting about it everywhere and waiting for the new song. 

But then, a month later on November 14 of 2022, The Neighbourhood’s drummer, Brandon Fried, was kicked out of the band because Maria Zardoya, lead singer of the band The Maria’s, made an Instagram post on her story accusing him of sexual harassment. Shortly after The Neighbourhood found out about this, they also made an Instagram post on their story, saying that as a result of his actions, he will no longer be a part of The Neighbourhood. 

This was very upsetting and shocking news for fans, especially since this would mean that production on the song that was likely going to be released in December would be delayed.

As of January 2023, there has been no recent news on The Neighbourhood or their song that was supposed to come out in December, so all fans can do for now is hope for the best and that The Neighbourhood follows through with their song.

NSO Europe Tour 2024

February 16 - February 28, 2024

From February 16–28, Gianandrea Noseda leads a nine-city European tour, his first international tour with the NSO, and the orchestra’s first since 2016. The NSO will visit some of Europe’s most important concert halls performing for audiences in Spain, Germany, and Italy, joined by pianist Seong-Jin Cho and violinist Hilary Hahn. Noseda will bring the NSO to his home city, Milan, with a performance at the Teatro alla Scala on February 26, 2024.

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand’s capital, with its modest cost of living , offers a wide selection of entertainment, restaurants, and lodging that will fit many travellers’ budgets. A trip to Bangkok would be incomplete, for instance, without a stroll through its lively markets. Savvy negotiators will know how to get their money’s worth among the Chatuchak Market’s 15,000 stalls selling decorations, jewelry, books, plants, fresh produce, animals, and other goods. You’ll even be treated to some free street performances. Leave the excitement behind and decompress at one of the city’s 400 temples for a small entrance fee.

Belgrade, Serbia

Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, is another affordable destination to visit in 2024. Transportation, restaurants, bars, and other everyday expenses are, on average, 50% less expensive in this country than elsewhere in Europe. A fr e e visit to Saint Sava Temple, for instance, is just one must-do Belgrade activity. Capable of welcoming 10,000 worshippers , it’s the second-largest Orthodox Christian church in the world . Cairo, Egypt

A guided visit to this wonder of the world is a must, especially when you can explore the interior for only 200 Egyptian pounds ( US$6.50 ). Other points of interest in Cairo include the Tahrir district where visitors can tour the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Cairo Tower, and Tahrir Square, one of Egypt’s largest public spaces.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Former capital of the Lanna kingdom, the city of Chiang Mai sits at the foot of a mountain range in northern Thailand. Frugal travellers wishing to immerse themselves in Thai culture will be delighted to find local products sold at low prices in the city’s markets. Warorot , for instance, offers a vast selection of regional foods while not attracting many tourists. Chiang Mai is also home to numerous Buddhist temples, typically free to visit (if not, entry fees are very low). Wat Chiang Man , in particular, is worth the trip. Constructed in the 13th century, it’s the city’s oldest temple. Those visiting Chiang Mai in mid-April will have the opportunity to participate in the Songkran festivities. Just be ready to ring in Thailand’s new year with a splash of water!

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka offers a multitude of free activities , making the capital of Bangladesh a fantastic destination for anyone who loves travelling on a budget. Stroll through historical Dhaka and visit the Shankhari Bazaar where you’ll see plenty of artisans practising their crafts at no charge. The Bangladesh National Zoo is home to 191 animal species, including Bengal tigers, rhinoceroses, and elephants. Tickets cost less than 20 takas ( US$0.20 ) per adult. Finally, don’t forget to stop by Haji Biryani , one of the city’s oldest restaurants, for a taste of biryani , a very popular South Asian dish of aromatic rice and lamb or goat.

New Delhi, India

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

It cost s very little to live in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), making it an ideal destination for those travelling on a budget in 2024. Traverse the city in a low-cost taxi or go underground via the Cu Chi tunnels , a network of subterranean passages dating to the late 1940s that were used by soldiers and civilians during the Vietnam War. Guided tours start at US$ 2 0 . Also add visits to the Fine Arts, FITO, and other affordable museums to your itinerary. Finally, indulge in some delicious Vietnamese cuisine with a popular and inexpensive Bánh mì sandwich from Bánh mì Huynh Hoa .

Istanbul, Turkey

Straddling the border between Europe and Asia, Ista n bul has a rich history as the former capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Views of the city often include the emblematic Blue Mosque , or Sultan Ahmed Mosque, a must-see destination you can visit for free outside of prayer time. While in the neighbourhood, try some inexpensive izgara köftes (grilled meatballs) at the nearby restaurant Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi . Lastly, visit the Istanbul Archaeological Museums for just 50 Turki s h liras ( US$1.60 ). La Paz, Bolivia

Built on the side of a mountain, La Paz is Bolivia’s administrative capital. Bargain-hunting tourists come to this city for its affordable lodging, street food, and other low-cost amenities. Known as the “world’s highest capital,” La Paz also offers cable cars for travelling between its various districts. Hop on for a mere 3 Bolivianos ( US$0.50 ) to see a stunning view of the city. Meanwhile in the colonial district, Jaén Street gives the impression of stepping back in time. Among the colourful houses, visitors will find several inexpensive museums to enjoy.

Kumasi, Ghana

Previously known as the “Garden City” for its wide variety of flowers and plants, Kumasi offers visitors picturesque surroundings and an authentic glimpse into Ghanan daily life. With over 10,000 vendors, the Kejetia Central Market is one of the largest in Africa. Indeed, agoraphobes might want to skip this very crowded spot. That said, it’s perfect for immersing yourself in regional culture. Combine a visit to the market with a stop at the Centre for National Culture for a complete change of scenery. When hunger strikes, you’ll find several options for filling up. Chop bars , located throughout the city, offer traditional regional fare, such as peanut soup and jollof rice.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Located in a valley bordered by the Himalaya Mountains, the city of Kathmandu is the historical, cultural, and economic hub of Nepal. It costs approximately 60% less to live there than in France, and the region is ideal for hiking, a budget-friendly activity if ever there was one. Hikers can practise their sport at the Langtang National Park , for instance. León, Nicaragua

Luang Prabang, Laos

Located in northern Laos, Luang Prabang is a haven of peace and spirituality . Indeed, this city offers several ecotourist activities that respect its harmonious atmosphere. Travelling on foot, for instance, is not only free, but enables visitors to observe, at their own pace, the fusion of Laos’s traditional urban architecture and that of the city’s colonial era. Manila, Philippines

Philippines national hero José Rizal dubbed Manila the “Pearl of the Orient.” Located on Luzon Island , this city is home to lots of scuba diving sites. Depending on experience and budget , explorers can observe a wide range of aquatic species. The National Museum of the Philippines extends the nautical experience even further with exhibits featuring treasures recovered from nearby shipwrecks, including those from the San Diego . The cost of living in Manila is 40% lower than that of France , so after a day of sea and shore excursions, relax in one of its many cost-effective hotels.

Medellín, Colombia

Medellín and its surroundings, Colombia’s second-largest city , have lots to offer the frugal (and fit) traveller . Join a group of 30 people for a guided walking tour of the city after which everyone pays what they can. Must-see attractions include Plaza Botero , where you can admire 23 giant statues carved by the famous artist Fernando Botero. Next door stands the magnificent Palace of Culture and Museo de Antioquia , presenting the history of Colombia and a major Botero collection. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is known as the “Red City” or “Ochre City” due to the colour of its packed-clay buildings. Lots of affordable lodging enables visitors to stay in the heart of Marrakech near numerous attractions. For only 70 dirhams ( US$7 ), you’ll have ready access to Bahia Palace . Built in the late 19th century, it features Moroccan Islamic architecture and vibrant colours of indelible beauty. Lastly, Marrakech’s souks , half covered, half open-air labyrinthine markets, house various kiosks filled with Moroccan marvels waiting to be haggled over with vendors. You’ll find an enormous variety of local spices, rugs, traditional tajines, and more.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Flights to Cambodia are generally economical, making it a budget-friendly destination , especially during the off-season. Once part of the French colonial empire, Cambodia visibly retains this heritage in much of the architecture seen in its capital, Phnom Penh. In contrast, the Royal Palace , a building complex constructed over several decades starting in the 1860s, is emblematic of Khmer culture. The current king of Cambodia continues to reside there, and visitors are welcome to enter when the sovereign is absent, for the modest sum of 40,000 riels ( US$10 ). Riga, Latvia

When downtown, don’t miss a visit to the Gandantegchinlen Monastery , a collection of several temples where monks continue to live today. Tbilisi, Georgia

The National Announces UK and European Tour Dates for 2024

American rock band The National has announced additional tour dates in the United Kingdom and Europe for their current 2023-2024 tour. Their original tour dates that span the United States, New Zealand, and Australia will feature special guests Hand Habits, Fleet Foxes, and Annie Hamilton.

The recently added tour dates will span countries including Italy, France, Germany, Croatia, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK. Special guest acts will include This Is The Kit, Bess Atwell, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kevin Morby. 

The band is also scheduled to perform at several music festivals in 2024, including Hurricane Festival, Southside Festival, INmusic Festival, and Live is Live.

The Grammy-nominated indie rock band will kick off their next stop on the First Two Pages of Frankenstein Tour today in San Francisco, California at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and close the tour at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 6, 2024.

The National’s Matt Berninger recently talked about his experience on this tour in an interview with NME’s Andrew Trendell. “We’ve been playing a lot of really old stuff and some stuff that we haven’t played at all yet, so every night is a disaster in one fun way or another!” said Berninger. Fans can expect an eclectic mix of music from this tour.

Tickets for the US, Australia, and New Zealand leg of the tour are currently on sale via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. General ticket sales for their European and United Kingdom leg of the tour will start on November 15 and 17. Presale tickets for the London and Edinburgh shows will be available on November 14.

The National has carved a niche in the music world with their distinctive Ohio-mixed-with-Brooklyn indie rock sound and profound lyrics. Formed in Cincinnati in 1999, the band consists of Matt Berninger (lead vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass), and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Their music, often described as dark, melancholic, and richly textured, has resonated deeply with fans worldwide. Old heads will enjoy this tour’s notable mix of tracks from the band’s older and newer albums.

The National’s ascent to fame was marked by Boxer (2007), featuring the hit “Fake Empire,” which solidified their place in the indie rock scene. Another standout album, High Violet (2010), included the hit “Bloodbuzz Ohio”. The band’s most recent albums First Two Pages of Frankenstein and Laugh Track were released in 2023 with positive reviews. The latter is considered a “surprise” album that was announced only a few days before its release.

Where to Go for a Less-Crowded European Summer

Ah, summer in Europe . Slow mornings spent reading books and trying all the local pastries you can get your hands on; afternoons strolling along the river or exploring quiet neighborhoods; evenings sipping rosé in sun-dappled squares. The only thing that can disrupt the pure bliss of summer in Europe is the threat of heaving streets, packed bars, and overbooked restaurants—a reality that is, unfortunately, all too common in the continent’s most popular destinations.

While we would never suggest avoiding such hotspots altogether, there is a lot to be said for choosing a lesser-known holiday spot during the peak summer months. There's a rapidly growing trend for traveling to alternative destinations, too—#dupe or #dupes amassed 342,000 posts on TikTok as part of the surging interest. Thoughtful travelers are reacting to the world around them —watching the rising temperatures and over-subscribed tourism of popular destinations during the summer, saving those destinations for off-peak travel and, instead, selecting off-beat destinations to visit instead. Below, our editors have put forward their favorite alternative European destinations to try this summer.

Braga, Portugal

Portugal’s oldest city is also one of its most underrated. Despite being in the shadow of neighboring Porto , Braga is a deserving destination in its own right. Pootle along narrow, cobbled lanes to unearth restaurants serving platters of traditional Portuguese dishes— Tabique , for example, specializes in slow-cooked meat and rich and thick sauces with potatoes for mopping, while just outside of the city, Dona Júlia is renowned for its sleek interiors and farm-to-table cooking. To soak up some of Braga’s history, visit Sé—Portugal’s oldest cathedral dating back to 1070—or take a day trip to Bom Jesus do Monte, a picturesque staircase with decadent chapels and pretty fountains.

Where to stay: Braga doesn’t have an abundance of smart hotels, but book Vila Gale for a city-center stay in a building dating back to 1508.

Bordeaux, France

This city may not be lesser-known, but when compared with the number of travelers that flock to Paris during the summer (especially this one), we deem it worthy of a mention in this list. There's world-class wine, proximity to the sea, and more than 350 historical buildings and monuments to visit. It’s largely pedestrianized, so travelers can shake off the blurry haze that settles in after a few wine tastings by exploring foot. Stop to admire the likes of the Grand Théâtre, the Gothic Tour Pey-Berland, or the Basilica of Saint Severinus. Or head into the hinterlands to ogle at some of the country’s top châteaux and wineries dotted along the Gironde.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam ’s cool little sister is finally getting the attention it deserves. Rotterdam , an old industrial port town, has slowly moulded itself into a hub of culture and design. Its climate-conscious outlook is also enticing travelers looking for a new summer city break. Rotterdam committed to cutting its CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2029 and has steadily unveiled new green spaces, eco-friendly design, and pedestrianized streets over the last few years.

Where to stay: Hotel New York has a selection of sleek bedrooms overlooking the river Maas in the city’s Kop van Zuid neighbourhood.

Bergen, Norway

Hiding behind the shiny prestige of Oslo , Bergen is a nature-lover’s paradise. The city itself is known for its colorful wooden houses—a rainbow of rusty red, royal blue, sunny yellow and earthy green, each stacked prettily along the waterfront. But look beyond the houses for even more breathtaking beauty—even in the summer you might spot snow-capped mountains, which cast long shadows of glittering fjords and hiking trails, providing the perfect playground for a summer adventure escape.

Where to stay: Book into Bergen Børs Hotel for a stylish stay in a 19th-century building.

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Dalmatian coast is as beautiful as it is overloaded, so head further inland to Bosnia and Herzegovina instead (and return to Croatia’s shoreline in the shoulder season, when temperatures are cooler and crowds are fewer). Mostar is an alluring city break, with its fairytale-like streets, craggy hillsides and ancient stone bridges, complete with surrounding vineyards, waterfalls and mountain hikes nearby.

‘Hidden in plain sight’: the European city tours of slavery and colonialism

From Puerta del Sol plaza in Madrid to the Tuileries Garden in Paris, guides reshape stories continent tells about itself

D odging between throngs of tourists and workers on their lunch breaks in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol plaza, we stop in front of the nearly 3-tonne statue depicting King Carlos III on a horse. Playfully nicknamed Madrid’s best mayor, Carlos III is credited with modernising the city’s lighting, sewage systems and rubbish removal.

Kwame Ondo, the tour guide behind AfroIbérica Tours, offers up another, albeit lesser-known tidbit about the monarch. “He was one of the biggest slave owners of his time,” says Ondo, citing the 1,500 enslaved people he kept on the Iberian peninsula and the 18,500 others held in Spain’s colonies in the Americas. As aristocratic families sought to keep up with the monarch, the proportion of enslaved people in Madrid swelled to an estimated 4% of the population in the 1780s.

It is a nod to the kind of conversation – one often neglected or wilfully ignored across the continent – that Ondo and his counterparts in Europe are steadily wedging into everyday life. From Barcelona to Brussels, London to Lisbon, a cohort of guides has trained its lens on Black and African history, laying bare how the continent has been shaped by colonialism and slavery as they reshape the stories that Europe tells about itself. While California debates reparation bills aimed at compensating for generations of discriminatory policies, and the UK takes down tributes to slave traders and colonialists, similar conversations have been conspicuously absent across much of the continent.

“We’re not lifting up anyone’s mattresses,” says Ondo. “This is history hidden in plain sight.”

It is a statement that in some ways mirrors his own life. Born in Equatorial Guinea – the last Spanish colony to claim independence , in 1968 – he grew up in southern Spain, steeped in the culture of a former empire that had long ceased to remember its actions in what has been dubbed the “forgotten colony” of Spain.

Ondo and his family’s existence in Spain, however, acted as a powerful counter to this forgetting. “It was a conscious decision by European powers to disconnect themselves from the history,” says Ondo. “But history comes back to you.”

Eleven hundred miles away, the sentiment is echoed by Jennifer Tosch, who launched Black Heritage Tours in Amsterdam in 2013. The previous year, Tosch had arrived in the country as an international student from the US with a singular Dutch connection; with family roots that trace back to Suriname, she had family who had been living in the Netherlands for four generations.

Her attempts to explore this connection were futile – the result of what she describes as “wilful forgetting” or “colonial amnesia” – and convinced her of the need to bring the city’s hidden histories to the masses.

“Imagine me sitting here in courses, being told that your history wasn’t included, that you didn’t matter,” she says. “That there was nothing here for you to see that would bring you closer to an understanding about your past. It just didn’t sit right.”

As she geared up to tour visitors and locals past the gable stones that include the image of a servile, Black child and the dark-skinned figureheads with exaggerated features once used to signal pharmacies, the idea was initially met with scepticism by Dutch people of colour.

“Like: ‘No, no, there was no Black history here; no, there was no Black presence until much later’,” she says. “So questioning the notions of belonging and citizenship and identity were interwoven with my mission to prove that we belong here. And that our stories matter.”

Eleven years on, the conversation around Black history and colonialism in the Netherlands has shifted. In 2023, King Willem-Alexander apologised for his country’s role in slavery but stopped short of heeding demands for reparations, despite research suggesting his ancestors had earned the modern-day equivalent of €545m (£466m) from slavery.

The apology was a “pretty watershed moment”, says Tosch, albeit one that was carefully timed to dovetail with the growing attention being paid to this history. In other words, it was more a credit to the crucial work many had been doing to uncover the history than any royal initiative, she says.

In Berlin, this kind of shift feels a long way off, says Justice Mvemba, who founded Decolonial Tours in 2022.

The locals who take her tours are often surprised to find out that Germany’s colonial empire once ranked as the third largest in Europe. “They’ve never learned anything about Germany’s colonial past, some don’t even know that the Berlin conference happened in Berlin,” she says, citing the 1884-85 gathering in which European imperial powers wrangled for control of Africa. “I think it is also shocking to them how those colonial continuities just live among us.”

Mvemba, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and raised in Germany, points to a potent example: Berlin’s African quarter, conceived in the late 19th century as a place where the city could host a permanent zoo that would exhibit both wild animals and humans in order to celebrate Germany’s colonial project.

While the zoo never came about, echoes of it resurfaced more than 100 years later, when a zoo in Bavaria sought to attract visitors by creating an “African village” that included performers and artisans.

The initiative went ahead despite widespread protests by anti-discrimination groups, Mvemba says, hinting at how Germany – a country often lauded for its efforts to deal with its more-recent past – had failed to meaningfully reckon with its history of colonialism. “So really, these tours are about making people reflect and realise that we are still living those colonial biases or reproducing them,” she says.

These efforts to connect the dots between the past and present come at a critical time for the continent, says Julia Browne. In 1994, she launched Walking the Spirit Tours , leading locals and visitors to Paris through the histories of those who had enabled slavery and confronted colonialism.

“It opens another chapter in the book of exploring French history – and European as well – and facing the facts, bringing it right out in front so that people can’t deny it,” she says. “And especially at this time, when the right wing is on the rise, the voices just have to keep getting stronger and stronger.”

In countries such as Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal, far-right parties have broken through to become key players in politics. In France and Germany, nativist parties are climbing steadily up the polls, pulling mainstream parties to the right as they compete for the attention of voters.

“They have a certain rhetoric and narration that creates fear in people, creates fear of what used to be called ‘the other’. And it gives the sense that people don’t belong if they’re not of European origin,” she says. “But it’s important for the other side to be heard, that, no, this is not the truth.”

She points to Place de la Concorde, set to be showcased to the world this summer during the Olympic Games. “But what else is there? There’s a place called Hôtel de la Marine. It’s a gorgeous building that’s been renovated, but it was in there that the system of slavery and colonialism was managed,” she says, describing it as an “administrative headquarters” for the country’s colonial empire before it was written into history as the location where the decree abolishing slavery in the colonies was signed in 1848.

Nearby, is the Tuileries Garden. “It was there that slavery in the colonies was first abolished by the National Convention, but also re-established by Napoleon,” says Browne. “If you’re a person of colour, or have origins in the islands or origins in colonial Africa, these places are part of your history.”

In Madrid, Ondo’s walking tour begins to wrap up after crossing a crowded plaza where people were once sold to the highest bidder and visiting a church teeming with tourists seemingly oblivious to the symbols linked to enslavement carved into its stone walls.

His last stop, however, is at a changing roster of African restaurants in the city centre. It’s an ending with a dual purpose: showcasing the vibrant clutch of restaurants, including Senegalese and Equatorial Guinean, that have sprung up in recent years, and reinforcing how the stories of the past continue to colour life in Madrid today.

“All this is not really a thing of the past, it’s a thing that is still going on at the moment,” he says, pointing to the power that continues to be wielded by those whose families profited from slavery, to the companies that have supplanted colonial empires in extracting resources from the global south, and the EU’s crackdown on those risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean in small boats.

“It’s a never-ending process,” Ondo says. “It’s a transformation of the same issues of 200 years ago. Projects like mine and many others kind of open up a conversation about these things.”
