Aurora sits at her piano and starts to play Animal Soul as a solo acoustic.

This is a peaceful song describing birth and the idea that our animal soul can hardly find a place in this world of hate. Aurora’s voice is delicate as she touches very high pitched notes.

It makes for a slightly sleepy beginning of a concert, but it sets the atmosphere for the next song.

Aurora turns towards the rest of the band. The drummer joins in almost immediately with the kick drum. He uses brushes on the edges of a snare drum. The guitarist uses a slight Reverb and plays a line based on two notes. Aurora starts to play a well known motive on her piano.

Teardrop by Massive Attack is probably their most famous song. Aurora’s voice is perfect to interpret it. During the chorus she lets it wander, reminding a lot the singing style of Dolores O’ Riordan. It is an extremely powerful performance.

Aurora comes out of the performance status and like a little elf, with her funny English greets the audience.

The next song is Warrior. Silje Sol joins on piano and with support vocals. The guitarist sings as well. The song is so energetic and powerful. It brings tears to my eyes. It is much warmer than the studio version, which is almost drowned in a cold synth-base. The support vocals by Silje Sol makes it in my opinion the best version ever performed.

It is sad to think that she cannot see the reaction from the audience. I was singing along and dancing and I was almost in tears while she was singing Warrior. If this is going to be the future of concerts, one should find a solution to give feedback to the artists from the audience. Maybe a screen the artist can look at while performing. Of course the screen should be moderated, people can do crazy things even on screen, so this shouldn’t disrupt the performance in any way.

All is soft Inside is also performed flawlessly, with its great high-pitched passages. The way Aurora moves, how she shakes around, like a little bird bathing in a pond, it is just so joyful.

She is also great at pep-talking, at supporting her audience during CoVid.

She dedicates Through the Eyes of a Child to them. The lyrics are really evocative and sweet.

In The River, Queendom and The Seed Aurora and Silje Sol perform wonderful harmonizations with their voices. Aurora’s vocalization remind me of a Native American, an imaginary she often refers to. In The Seed she refers to the famous quote by Obomsawin.

She ends her concert with Across the Universe, sang together with the rest of the band.

This was a magic experience.

This was one of the best shows I've been to in a long time. Her voice is amazing that projects from such a tiny body. When the songs play she is full of energy and then when they end and she chats with the audience, she becomes like a mouse with a tiny little voice, so humble. The Gratitude in the air was palpable from both Singer and crowd. And something I've never experience before... During the slow/quiet songs fans were actually shushing the crowd quiet, to the point that i could hear the change being made at the bar (nearly 40 feet away). I hope your experience at her show is as heartwarming as mine was.

It was very nice show. Forum Karlin was sold (8500 people)! The concert had good sound, nice FX lights, nice dancers AND GREAT voice of Aurora, very talented young singer! It was amazing to see this young girl 'driving' whole show with no problems/nervosity. She is not native English speaker, but she is able use this language in her songs very well and it is enought. Successfull almost 2 hours live music show!

Okay, let me just say that this was my first concert that I’ve been to and I already know it’s the best I’ll ever see. AURORA is everything—her live voice is impeccable, her band is flawless, and her personality makes you feel like you’re with friends just watching another friend perform. I have nothing to complain about because this was absolutely the best experience of my life.

Aurora's show was possibly one of the best shows I have or ever will see. The venue itself, Thalia Hall, made the show a treat, but Aurora took it over the top. She truly connects with her fans and her performanceship was vibrant and free. I would recommend this venue and artist to literally everybody. It is a once in a lifetime experience in my opinion.

amazing live! sounds exactly like her studio version. Her voice is like an angel <3 I first discovered her on soundcloud and I was hooked. She even sang a few covers and they were just as good as her own songs. The concert was only 1 hr, but $15 is the best deal I've ever spent considering how amazing her voice is. Aurora slays.

Absolutely amazing show. Aurora has an amazing stage presence for her first international tour, and the live renditions for her songs (especially Winter Bird & Running with the Wolves) far surpassed the studio versions. Very much looking forward to future shows. If you have the opportunity to see her live, do not miss it!!

It was nice to see Aurora return to Toronto for one show at the Danforth Music Hall. She played songs from her latest effort to the delight of many of us. There were no surprises last night as she delivered what we all expected- great music with personality, hip and ideal support from her band. A worthwhile evening.

Really fun concert. Loved AURORA’s energy, and her voice was just as amazing in person as it is recorded. The opening act was great too. AURORA interacted with the crowd and was extremely sweet and kind, sharing stories and inspirational messages with the crowd. I would definitely go again.

We are thrilled to announce that powerful Norwegian alternative pop songstress AURORA is returning to Australia, bringing her powerful live performance to stunning venues across the East Coast including Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, Sydney Opera House and Palais Theatre, Melbourne throughout March 2023. The highly anticipated dates will see the enchanting artist grace Australian stages with a host of new songs from her critically acclaimed 2022 album, The Gods We Can Touch.

Recently, AURORA headlined Norway’s Øya Festival in August 2022, alongside Florence + The Machine, Gorillaz and more; she stunned a crowd of 20,000 people as she joined the star studded lineup of London’s BST Hyde Park in July and has been dominating stages across the US on her headline tour. April saw AURORA complete a sold out Spring UK tour where she played a packed 02 Brixton Academy in front of over 5,000 adoring fans. Not long after this she won a highly-regarded Spellemann Award (Norway’s version of the GRAMMYs) for International Success Of The Year. No doubt she will be ready to stun with her ethereal stage presence when she graces Australian shores in 2023.

About “Your Blood,” AURORA claims,

“The world is always bleeding. And you never know what is going on under people’s skin. I think it’s only when we reach out to each other that we understand what compassion and beauty we are capable of as human beings. Even if we can’t understand what people are going through, we should still try. If we don’t, what is a life truly worth? Sometimes addressing the pain, your own or the pain of the world, hurts so much it feels like dying. But in truth, I believe it is then we are born. Your blood. My blood. Our blood.”

Next year, AURORA will be embarking on a 10-day tour around Norway. The full list of dates can be found below.

Norwegian artist Aurora has today (14) released the new single ‘Exist For Love,’ for which she has also shared the self-directed video.

The string arrangement on the track is by Isobel Waller-Bridge, best known for her score for the comedy drama hit series Fleabag , written by and starring her younger sister Phoebe. ‘Exist For Love’ features the dreamy vocals of the Norwegian singer, writer and producer, set to Waller-Bridge’s similarly atmospheric arrangement, which evokes the “divine journey of love.”

Aurora and Waller-Bridge collaborated on the track from their respective isolation of recent weeks. “Isobel understood and respected the spirit of the song,” says Aurora. “I’m very grateful to have her as another mother to the project.”

“Love makes us human, and divine”

The artist goes on to say: “I thought I didn’t have a love song within me, until one day a few years ago, when I realised what a heavenly thing love is. Yes, it makes us human, but it also makes us divine. Whatever you’re using that love for. Or who.

“The touch of it will leave a print in us,” she goes on. “It may be newborn love, it might be grief. But still we dare to love. Again and again. And when we get to experience that love, I think we understand why we exist. We exist for love.”

In February, Aurora was on stage with American star Idina Menzel, her collaborator on the track ‘Into The Unknown’ from the soundtrack of Frozen II . They performed the song to the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and millions of TV viewers, together with nine of the voice actresses who play the Elsa character in international dubs of the smash hit film.

‘Into The Unknown’, written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, was nominated for Best Original Song, losing out to Elton John’s ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again’ from Rocketman.

Olivia Rodrigo is having a moment. Tuesday at the first of a sold-out two-night stand at United Center, the singer-songwriter ensured everyone in the audience shared in it.

Touring in support of her “Guts” album, the 21-year-old vocalist brought to light concerns, sentiments and circumstances that largely impact teenage girls and women of all ages. Her inspired and inspiring performance was a combination high-energy concert, scream-therapy session, communal catharsis and stay-up-til-dawn slumber party. It displayed Rodrigo’s maturation from adolescent to young adult — as well as her interest in those who look to her as a role model and peer.

Rodrigo’s ability to relate to the predominantly female crowd transcended the surface connections forged at shows by most superstars. Her repeated calls for fans to yell, sing and enjoy themselves represented a more courageous and sometimes dangerous idea: the permission to be yourself. The sound of thousands of voices shouting every lyric back at her and the look of joy on many faces were indications Rodrigo got another key point across: her apparent normalcy.

For 95 minutes, she made evident her experiences don’t differ much from those of her listeners.

Having transitioned from acting roles on Disney’s “Bizaardvark” and “High School Musical: The Musical: Series” to international pop sensation, Rodrigo ranks alongside other young female artists — Billie Eilish, SZA, Dua Lipa, Phoebe Bridgers, Megan Thee Stallion, Karol G, Taylor Swift included — as proof that in the early 2020s, girls run the world. At least when it comes to record charts, ticket sales and outsized influence.

Two albums into her career, Rodrigo counts multiple No. 1 singles, a pair of No. 1 LPs, three Grammy Awards (and 13 nominations), seven Billboard Music Awards and a Billboard Woman of the Year nod among her feats. She’s also emerged as a conscientious voice. In addition to appearing with President Joe Biden to promote vaccinations, the California native has supported causes that aid homeless kids, hospitalized patients, war victims and individuals with epidermolysis bullosa.

Rodrigo’s activism extends to her own charity, Fund 4 Good, which strives to champion women’s rights. Her outspoken advocacy of reproductive health care and sex education recently landed her management in hot water with states that outlaw abortion.

But those opposed to Rodrigo’s stance won’t mute her messages. Though the megaphone the singer wielded to help broadcast the revenge fantasy “Get Him Back!” — complete with confetti and an unspoken announcement that the deluxe version of “Guts” with bonus tracks lands this Friday — doubled as clever theater, Rodrigo’s empowering statements resonated without supplemental help.

aurora tours singer

Backed by an all-female band, the singer did a little of everything while running through the majority of her catalog. Play a grand piano and reveal deep thoughts on a sullen ballad? “Drivers License.” Get filmed from below to suggest a violation of privacy before grabbing an electric guitar, banging out chords and jamming on her knees? “Obsessed.” Strip arrangements down to an acoustic guitar framework, casually sit on the stage and transform the arena setting into the kind of close gathering witnessed by besties at a sleepover? “Happier” and “Favorite Crime.”

In the context of modern arena tours, the production adhered to a similar simplicity. Save for a sequence where Rodrigo orbitted half of the venue atop the fold of a crescent moon as stars dangled from the ceiling, the fanciest aspects related to hydraulic platforms, concealed stairs and dry ice fog. The stage, extended with two runways, was framed by a high-definition video screen that transmitted live and pre-recorded content. Basic, albeit proven and effective.

The less to distract from Rodrigo, the better. She limited herself to four outfit changes (preference: crop tops and sparkly shorts or skirts). A dance squadron with mediocre choreographic skills accompanied Rodrigo on a handful of numbers, but the singer outshined everyone with her extroverted personality and animated movements.

Skipping, hopping, crawling, twisting, jogging in place, descending to floor level to slap hands: Rodrigo matched the carbonated fizz of her most upbeat materia. To emphasize certain lines in songs, she used gestures that often disappeared as fast as they arrived. Sticking a finger in her mouth; twirling her hair; rolling her eyes; outstretching her arms; circling her tongue around her lips; mock-saluting: Rodrigo understood how nuance can accent meaning — particularly when words surface at a rapid clip.

At times, they gushed akin to water pouring from a firehose. Rodrigo sang with a balance of hushed delicacy and emotive intensity, dividing time between dramatic ballads and freeing ragers. She eschewed perfection in favor of authenticity, and risked hitting bad notes rather than relying on backing tracks. Borrowing from new-wave, coffeehouse folk and, most prevalently, pop-punk and other hook-heavy styles popular in the ‘90s — an era that notably predates her existence — the singer’s music would’ve benefited from a more capable band but didn’t try to push boundaries. Her subject matter, however, ventured places few mainstream talents explore.

aurora tours singer

Frustration, desperation, bitterness, disloyalty, envy, self-doubt, angst: Rodrigo addressed issues tied to painful coming-of-age processes with devastating insight, unsparing vulnerability and the occasional well-suited profanity. She conveyed them via female perspectives that underlined the nagging insecurities, compromised decisions and hollowed-out feelings young girls face.

For all the merit of Rodrigo’s detail-rich songs about early heartaches (the accusatory slow-build of “Deja Vu”) and uncaring exes (the synthesized drift of “Traitor,” the acerbic bombast of “Good 4 U”), her embrace of broader topics demonstrated her evolution as a person and artist. Rodrigo acknowledged as much.

Before performing the soul-probing “Teenage Dream,” she said that approximately two years ago she saw “growing up [as] the scariest, worst thing in the world.” Now, she admitted, she feels she knows herself better. Her latest work reflected that heightened awareness and spoke to complex themes that went beyond age categorizations.

The emptiness, anger and dread that arise from being exploited like a cheap product amid the noir “Vampire.” The self-flagellation that happens when you know you’ve been had and the embarrassment that ensues when you examine your behavior, chronicled in the winking “Love Is Embarrassing.” The contradictory justifications associated with rationalizing a hook-up with a former lover, sent up through the bounce of the humorous “Bad Idea Right?” Rodrigo relayed the situations and moods with confidence and empathy, operating as if she read the minds of everyone in those positions.

aurora tours singer

She went even further on the falsetto-laden “Pretty Isn’t Pretty,” tackling body-image expectations and cultural pressures advanced by social media, pharma advertisements and fashion industry with lingering sadness and loathing. But Rodrigo refused to let herself, or her followers, fall under the thumb of anyone or anything.

Enter Rodrigo as the “All-American Bitch,” a sarcastic tear-down of the double standards, ludicrous assumptions and impossible demands placed on women for centuries. As the singer belted out the probable generational anthem, she paused for everyone to think of an irritant and encouraged them to vent their grievances with a collective scream.

The essence of Rodrigo’s enabling messages registered loud and clear: We are women, hear us roar.

“Bad Idea Right?” “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” “Vampire” “Traitor” “Drivers License” “Teenage Dream” “Pretty Isn’t Pretty” “Love Is Embarrassing” “Making the Bed” “Logical” “Enough for You” “Lacy” “Jealousy, Jealousy” “Can’t Catch Me Now” “Happier” “Favorite Crime” “Deja Vu” “The Grudge” “Brutal” “Obsessed” “All-American Bitch”

Encore “Good 4 U” “Get Him Back!”

  • O'Connor had four children: Jake, Roisin, Shane, and Yeshua.
  • Here's everything that you need to know about O'Connor's kids.

Insider Today

The Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor died at age 56 in July 2023, according to a statement from O'Connor's family given to the Irish news outlet RTE.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad," the family's statement read. "Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

O'Connor is known for her 1990 cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," which appeared on her second LP, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got." She was nominated for eight Grammy awards in her career and won the award for best alternative music performance for "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" at the 1991 awards show.

O'Connor also famously tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II to protest against abuse in the Catholic Church during a performance on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992, an act for which she received backlash.

O'Connor is survived by her three living children after her   son Shane died by suicide at age 17 in 2022. Here's everything you need to know about her kids.

Jake Reynolds is O'Connor's eldest child

O'Connor gave birth to her first son, Jake Reynolds, in June 1987, when she was married to John Reynolds. At the time, Today reported , O'Connor was 20 years old, and she gave birth three weeks before her debut album's release.

In an interview with People in 2021, O'Connor said Jake worked as a chef. She posted in July 2015 that he had welcomed a son, making her a grandmother, the International Business Times reported .

Jake has largely remained out of the public eye, though O'Connor occasionally posted about him on social media.

Roisin Waters is O'Connor's second child

O'Connor gave birth to Roisin, her only daughter, in 1995 with the journalist John Waters, after her marriage to John Reynolds ended. O'Connor and Waters eventually engaged in a custody battle over Roisin, which Waters won in 1999, MTV News reported . The outlet said O'Connor decided to give Waters custody of their daughter following O'Connor's suicide attempt.

O'Connor told People in 2021 that her daughter had a "great singing voice" but that she was relieved Roisin didn't choose to follow in her mother's footsteps. "I thought they would treat her like they treat me," she said. People reported that Roisin worked as a pastry chef.

Roisin put her singing talents to use, however, at a tribute concert for her mother and the late Irish artist Shane MacGowan at Carnegie Hall in March 2024, Billboard reported. She sang "Nothing Compares 2 U," her mother's most famous track. Fellow artist Amanda Palmer posted a video of Roisin's performance on social media, writing, "I don't think there was a dry eye in the house."

Shane Lunny was O'Connor's third child, and he died by suicide in 2022

O'Connor gave birth to Shane Lunny in 2004, having him with Donal Lunny, an Irish folk musician. In the 2021 People interview, O'Connor said that Shane was "a real mommy's boy" who wanted to follow in his mother's footsteps with a career in music.

In August 2017, O'Connor posted a video on Facebook saying that she had felt alone since losing custody of Shane and expressed suicidal ideation, The Telegraph reported .

Shane was found dead in January 2022  and O'Connor wrote on Twitter that he had died by suicide.

"My beautiful son, Nevi'im Nesta Ali Shane O'Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God," O'Connor tweeted in a since-removed post.

"May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace," she said.

O'Connor posted a tribute to her son days before her death, People reported .

"Been living as an undead night creature since," she wrote in a now-deleted tweet, according to People. "He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally."

O'Connor's youngest child is Yeshua Bonadio

O'Connor had her youngest child, Yeshua, with Frank Bonadio in 2006. O'Connor told People in 2021 that Bonadio was an American scientist, and that Yeshua was interested in attending college in the United States.

O'Connor said that Yeshua was an "incredible musician" who played the piano and had an "incredible singing voice."

How Do You Become the U.K.’s Hottest New Band? The Old-Fashioned Way.

The Last Dinner Party has rapidly built a following by meticulously planning its theatrical live shows, and ignoring viral fame.

Reporting from London

  • March 21, 2024

One drunken evening in 2019, Abigail Morris and Georgia Davies rushed into a discount store in Brixton, south London, and bought a cheap notepad to write down their band’s manifesto.

At that point, the rock group, then called the Dinner Party, only had three members, and had never actually rehearsed any songs. But Morris and Davies — the singer and bassist — knew exactly how they wanted to look and sound: “Gothic,” “Indulgent” and “Decadence” were at the top of their list.

As the English literature students went from pub to pub, they added to their proclamation, including modest ambitions (playing shows with hip British bands) and more grandiose aims (“We want to be role models for younger girls”).

Later in the evening, Morris accidentally cut herself on a broken glass, and dripped blood onto the notepad. “I was, like, ‘This is perfect!’” Davies recalled in a recent interview. The splatters emphasized the pair’s vision for a band teetering between the beautiful and the grotesque.

Some four years later, this meticulous yet playful approach has helped Davies and Morris achieve some of their goals. Now called the Last Dinner Party, the theatrical rock group — which also includes Emily Roberts (lead guitar), Lizzie Mayland (rhythm guitar) and Aurora Nishevci (keyboards) — has this year become Britain’s buzziest new band.

Onstage, a woman in a flowing lace dress sings into a microphone, surrounded by bandmates and chandeliers.

In January, the group — whose sound is often compared to the sweeping pop of Florence + the Machine — topped the BBC’s Sound of 2024 , a much-watched annual poll, which has previously anointed Adele and PinkPantheress.

At a time when rock bands often struggle for attention, the Last Dinner Party has broken through by taking a surprisingly traditional route, prioritizing touring, rather than producing social media-targeted hits. A North American tour starts Thursday, including sold-out dates at New York’s Webster Hall on March 26 and Brooklyn Steel the following day, as well as the Coachella festival in April.

Morris said this approach, with which the band has gone from playing pubs to selling out 5,000-capacity London theaters, would help them sustain a career. “There’s no longevity in having a viral song blow up,” she said. “That’s not how you build a community.”

A striking visual aesthetic, though, can help. The band’s fashion sense is magpie-like, taking inspiration from various historic eras and fantastical styles. Last fall, the group set dress codes for a British tour and although it’s stopped that practice, at a recent London gig, dozens of younger audience members donned outfits including floral headdresses and corsets, inspired by band’s theatrical imagery.

Even those who didn’t dress up seemed all in. The comedian Kerry Godliman, 50, said she’d become a fan after her daughter came back from a festival raving about the group. “I love the grandeur of it, the camp archness of it, the theatricality of it,” Godliman said. The fact that the band is made up of women and a nonbinary person is “still such a rare thing,” she added.

After releasing its debut single, an expletive-filled love song called “ Nothing Matters ,” in spring 2023, the Last Dinner Party’s ascent has been so fast in Britain that, on social media, some observers have accused its members — who are all in their mid-20s — of being “industry plants,” brought together by record label executives.

Roberts, the guitarist, said she found such suggestions “quite sad,” as if people “don’t want to believe that a young female and nonbinary band can be successful.” The reality is less dramatic, Morris added: She has been an aspiring rock star since her teens at a Catholic school, where she developed “a crushing need to be adored by everyone at all times at whatever cost.”

She met Davies at college in London; the other three band members were also music-obsessed students in the British capital, who Morris and Davies gradually brought into their fold.

With Britain in and out of lockdowns because of the coronavirus pandemic, the nascent band initially couldn’t play live, and honed its sound instead: moody, grand indie-pop, topped by Morris’s swooping vocals. By the time of its first show in November 2021, Morris said the members had “rehearsed so long, we were fully formed.” By its fourth show, at an out-of-the-way venue on a south London industrial park, record labels were deluging the band with messages. (It eventually signed with a major, Island Records, and made a 70-page presentation to explain its vision to the label’s marketing team.)

James Ford, who’s worked with Depeche Mode, Jessie Ware and Blur, produced the group’s debut, “Prelude to Ecstasy,” which arrived last month. He said in an interview that when he walked into the studio and saw the band members with a full string section and horn players, he thought, “I haven’t seen this kind of belief from a band, and also from the people behind them, in a long time.”

“In the back of my head, I was like, ‘This is either going to go really well or be a total disaster,’” he added.

Tara Richardson, the band’s manager, said the group’s theatricality gives fans a release from the bleak political and economic climate in Britain at the moment. “People want escapism,” she said: “They need an out.”

In interviews at a Mediterranean cafe in North London, four of the group’s members stressed that even if their music is escapist, it isn’t removed from contemporary concerns. The album includes “ The Feminine Urge ,” with lyrics sneering at men who think women exist only for their entertainment, and “ Beautiful Boy ,” attacking male privilege. “This isn’t just corsets,” Morris said. “It’s Trojan horse pop music.”

A swift ascent in music can be bewildering. Mayland, the guitarist, said that some recent experiences like attending award shows had felt like living “inside a TV, this isn’t real.”

But Morris and Davies, the band’s first two members, said they remain focused on the artistic vision they imagined on that drunken night in Brixton.

“It’s fun to commit to a bit and follow it through to its logical extreme,” Davies said. For now, it’s becoming the world’s favorite new band.

Ledisi celebrates her knows-no-bounds vocal prowess on latest album, tour

The singer brings her good life tour, featuring special guest bj the chicago kid, to the chicago theatre later this week..

Ledisi is on the road in support of her new album, "Good Life," recently released on her Listen Back Entertainment label.

Ledisi is on the road in support of her new album, “Good Life,” recently released on her Listen Back Entertainment label.

Ron T. Young

A broken shoe. A faulty dress. And a computer crash.

It was pure madness before the start of singer Ledisi’s concert in Philadelphia earlier this month.

“We're standing around the computer going, ‘Oh, Lord,’” recalled Ledisi, who will bring the Good Life tour, featuring special guest BJ the Chicago Kid, to the Chicago Theatre on March 30. “And Patti [LaBelle] is in the audience. She doesn't know all this is going on.”

Luckily, the show went off without a hitch. And LaBelle — who “never goes out” and only planned to pop in — stayed the whole night , stood up and called it one of the best concerts, Ledisi said.

Never shy about referencing her belief in God, Ledisi offered a spiritual explanation.

“I think when you’re doing spiritual work in your music and in the setting, sometimes chaos comes to try to wreck that,” she said.

Perseverance in the face of obstacles is a prominent message on Ledisi’s 11th album, “Good Life,” recently released on her own label, Listen Back Entertainment. And Ledisi, 51, is a fitting messenger, after navigating the ups and downs of more than two decades in the music industry.

“Life is not perfect,” she said. “Life is about just getting through. And it’s the lessons that you learn after you get through that make life really, really good.”

The last four years have been busy for Ledisi, who went independent, won her first Grammy , became an artist in residence at the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and received a warm reception at Carnegie Hall, where she performed selections from her Nina Simone tribute album, “Ledisi Sings Nina,” with an orchestra.

Ledisi said she feels comfortable singing whatever she likes, often stretching beyond the boundaries of R&B.

“I'm more than that,” she said. “I can scat. I love jazz. I studied classical for years. … Even my R&B friends were blown away when I sang at the Grammys’ [Premiere Ceremony] in French with a string quartet. They were like, ‘Led, we didn't know.’”

Given her vocal prowess, Ledisi has been requested to sing multiple tributes to legendary singers, including LaBelle, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin.

“They always give me the hardest [songs],” Ledisi said. “It's always upper-range and in the head voice. Doing ‘Ain’t No Way’ [by Franklin] was tough. People loved it, though.”

  • With new album, soul singer Ledisi renews her independence creatively — and financially

Ledisi said she is also challenged by Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Someone to Watch Over Me," which she has never performed live.

“Ella Fitzgerald has a tone that's just impeccable,” Ledisi said. “I'll never match that. And I'm glad. My ultimate challenge is to try to figure out how to be as smooth as Ella.”

Ledisi also plans to sing "Here's to Life" by jazz singer Shirley Horn — but not anytime soon.

“I'm not ready to sing that because I don't feel like I'm done,” she said. “It's one of those songs I want to sing when I'm 90.”

Beyond singing, Ledisi is an author, who has released two books, including the 2020 self-help title, "Don't Ever Lose Your Walk: How to Embrace Your Journey."

She also has built an acting career, portraying Gladys Knight in the movie "Spinning Gold," as well as Mahalia Jackson in the film "Selma" and in a biopic on Hulu. She said the experience came in handy while crafting songs for "Good Life."

" I just started drawing from the human experience like an actor," she said. "I'm becoming a better songwriter."

Singles from the album include "Sell Me No Dreams," "I Need to Know" and "Perfect Stranger," featuring Kenny Lattimore. The album's title track has become her favorite track to perform on the tour, she said.

“It lifts me so much, and it lifts the audience to another place."

Though she feels sure of her place in the music industry, Ledisi said she's not certain what lies ahead.

“I'm still figuring out what more I want to do with myself,” she said. “I'm growing right now.”

AURORA shares blissful new single ‘Your Blood’

She also shared details of a new tour of Norway

AURORA, 2023

AURORA has shared a new blissful single titled ‘Your Blood’. Check it out below.

  • READ MORE: Five things we learned from our In Conversation video chat with AURORA

Shared today (November 8), the track is the Norwegian alt-pop singer’s first new music since she released her chart-topping third album ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ , and sees her deliver some cathartic vocals alongside some synth-infused instrumentals.

‘Your Blood’, co-written, produced and recorded by Chris Greatti ( Lady Gaga , Willow , Yungblud , Grimes ), finds AURORA shedding light on the beauty of the human soul in all its forms – celebrating it for its vulnerability, emotions and flaws. It also is described in a press release as a track that “marks a new era” for the singer and opens her up to “another chapter in her ever-evolving” discography.

Discussing the new single, AURORA said: “The world is always bleeding. And you never know what is going on under people’s skin. I think it’s only when we reach out to each other, that we understand what compassion and beauty we are capable of as human beings.”

She continued, adding: “Even if we can’t understand what people are going through: we should still try. If we don’t, what is a life truly worth? Sometimes addressing the pain, your own, or the pain of the world hurts so much it feels like dying. But in truth, I believe it is then we are born. Your blood. My blood. Our blood.”

The new song comes after AURORA shared details of her first book, The Gods We Can Touch .

Set for release on November 16 via Decca Records & Faber Music, the project has already been a hit with fans, with signed copies selling out in under an hour and the printing press having to be relaunched to meet demands. You can pre-order the book here .

‘Your Blood’ also comes alongside the announcement that AURORA will be playing a series of live shows across her native Norway.

Set to kick off in spring 2024, the tour will consist of eight dates across the country and kick off on March 3 with an opening date in Hamar. From there, the singer will make stops in Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger, before closing the tour with two back-to-back shows in Oslo.

Tickets for the Norwegian tour go on sale this Friday (November 10) and can be found here . Check out the full list of tour dates below.

AURORA, 2023.

2024 Aurora Tour Dates are:

MARCH: 3 – Hamar Kulturhus, Hamar 7 – Røkeriet, USF Verftet, Bergen 8 – Røkeriet, USF Verftet, Bergen 13 – Byscenen, Trondheim 14 – Byscenen, Trondheim 16 – Stavanger Konserthus, Stavanger 22 – Sentrum Scene, Oslo 23 – Sentrum Scene, Oslo

AURORA’s forthcoming live shows follow on from a busy year of touring throughout 2022 and 2023. This included a sold-out show at the O2 Academy Brixton, followed by international dates for her ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ tour.

This summer, she also headlined Norway’s Øya Festival alongside Florence + The Machine and Gorillaz , and joined the star-studded line-up at BST Hyde Park , alongside the likes of the legendary Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers .

AURORA’s third album ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ received a four-star review from NME , which said that the album was “loaded with AURORA’s idiosyncratic quirks and enchanting notions, but it’s never purely a slave to whimsy”, calling the record AURORA’s most complete effort to date.

Speaking with NME last year , the alt-pop star also recalled what it was like to see a new wave of fans because of platforms such as TikTok.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” she said. “Once I had more than just my mother as a fan, it’s all kind of been a mush. I feel that if you find my music, then there’s a reason. You may need it.”

“I’m happy for all of those people and myself,” she added. “A connection has been made, and that’s a very touching thing. Imagine how scary it is to let something into your heart, let something touch it and even make it cry. I’m honoured by that.”
