Ride through a resplendent natural world

The Blue Mountain bike tour has featured in Vogue, Departure, and Town & Country Magazine, and has been described by Discovery and The Travel Channel as a ‘must-do’ in Jamaica. The New York Times referred to the views from the Blue Mountain road as ‘One of the best scenic vistas in the Caribbean’. On the Blue Mountain Bike Tour Ocho Rios, unmissable experiences await.

This awe-inspiring, immersive adventure will take you and your family on a dazzling day tour of discovery, maximizing your experience in the breathtaking Blue Mountain area. Beginning with a ride along the unbounding beauty of the Blue Mountain road, you’ll be regaled with stories of the wonderful Jamaican culture as your guide leads you past enchanting scenery.

Your day tour will ride through vibrant tropical rainforests, alive with luscious, exotic plants and colorful flora and fauna. You’ll be immersed in a scintillating sound bath of exotic birdsong, echoing from the emerald branches above you. Breathtaking blooms and tropical birds flash by in bursts of rainbow colors, and you could catch a glimpse of one of the world’s largest and rarest butterfly species. Biking past verdant acres of Blue Mountain coffee plantations, gain insight into the fascinating agricultural processes that surround these lush areas.

Your guided tour reaches a fantastic finale at Blue Mountain’s cascading waterfalls. Here, clear waters crash elegantly from the crests, sprinkling the lush slopes with a gentle mist. You’ll have time to absorb the full beauty of this breathtaking wonder, enjoying a refreshing plunge or paddle in the enchanting pools, or simply a scenic, spiritually rejuvenating rest.

You can now ride a railbike along a 17-mile track through scenic Ventura County

I never learned how to ride a bike.

Sure, I went through the motions of trying when I was 7 or 8 years old, but the skill never stuck. I suppose the balance needed to steer and maneuver a contraption with two wheels has always evaded me.

But you don’t need balance (or really any skills beyond sitting and wearing a helmet) to take a spin on t he Sunburst’s new 17-mile railbike route , which launched this month. Thursday through Sunday, riders can now book two-seat railbikes to explore the citrus and avocado groves on train tracks that run through the Santa Clara River Valley.

Two young people seated in a railbike, putting neon yellow helmets on and looking at each other.

It costs $249 to book a two-seater bike for a three-and-a-half-hour ride, but local residents of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru are offered a discounted rate of $186. In Northern California, Mendocino Railway’s steep pricing was criticized back in 2020, when companies increased River Fox Train and Skunk Train tickets by nearly 500% to $250. But the worth of a railbike experience, I suppose, is in the eye of the beholder.

Searching for citrus in Santa Paula

To avoid rush hour traffic, I decided to book the Saturday afternoon ride for my partner and me. The Santa Clara River Valley is about 60 miles outside of Los Angeles, so we left the house before 11 a.m. and got back to L.A. around dusk.

The drive north is scenic, especially with all the greenery from this winter’s heavy rain. Once we arrived in Fillmore, we also spotted the only Jamba - Wingstop combo shop I have ever seen.

A scene-setting photo of a red building, with a set of train tracks in front of it holding seven railbikes, some with riders.

On the tracks of the train depot, we spotted seven go-kart-like apparatuses with big red wheels. Each railbike had two seatbelts, two bright green helmets and one shallow basket that could hold small bags and snacks throughout the ride.

Bike-adjacent inventions that roll atop train tracks have been known by many different names — handcar , draisine , kalamazoo and velocipede are just a few — since they first cropped up around the 1860s. And though these devices were originally made for railroad maintenance, different companies have found ways to turn railbikes into fun, outdoor adventures for train lovers.

Fort Bragg's Skunk Train, a 19th-centjry rail route through redwood forests, has added Railbikes that allow visitors to pedal in pairs on the tracks.

A bucket list trip: Pedal through a Northern California forest on old railroad tracks

Skunk Train Railbikes, part of a nationwide trend, takes riders past redwoods and river waters in Mendocino County.

July 22, 2021

Robert Jason Pinoli, the president and CEO of Mendocino Railway , said the company’s electric railbikes — which function similarly to electric bikes — are currently patent pending. (Mendocino Railway operates the Sunburst and its railbikes.)

“We didn’t invent the railbike,” he said. “What we did invent, though, was the technology to propel these rail bikes beyond pedal power, the electric assist.”

A close-up photo of a hand operating the handbrake of a railbike.

As we settled into our seats, the guides explained how to use the bike’s handbrake, five gears and thumb throttle, which allows you to move without pedaling. The person on the right side of each bike is in charge of setting the bike’s pace and keeping a safe distance from the railbike just ahead of them, since the bikes move as one unit with a guide in the front and a guide at the back of the group.

“If you want to make the pedaling effortless, you can do it,” Pinoli said. “If you want to pedal away, you can turn it down to zero and pedal your heart out.”

As we buckled up and set out on our journey, we immediately encountered our first intersection. Pinoli shared that the guides are able to input a code that activates railroad crossing warning gates before the bikes approach each road. The tracks for the Sunburst’s route cross several active roads including CA-126, which made our line of railbikes quite the spectacle for drivers as they waited for our gates to retract.

A view from behind of two people in a railbike, crossing a road with cars waiting for them to pass.

17 miles in the great outdoors, no effort required

There are around 140,000 miles of train tracks in the United States alone — enough track to loop the circumference of Earth more than five times. Most of them are used for utilitarian purposes such as transporting coal, lumber or rocks, but some have been restored and repurposed for entertainment and enjoyment.

In this case, Mendocino Railway proposed a plan to restore the Santa Paula Branch Line, a 32-mile railway corridor that was built in 1887 and is now owned by the Ventura County Transportation Commission.

“This line was originally built by the Southern Pacific Railroad to transport citrus out of the area,” Pinoli said. “We took over operation of the line in 2022, did a bunch of infrastructure work to the railroad, and we are now at the phase where we can actually start running railbikes over it.”

A bag of oranges sitting in a black wire basket on a rail bike.

Mendocino Railway’s other tourism trains and railbikes include the popular Skunk Train in Fort Bragg and the monthly Boba Tea Train on the River Fox L ine in West Sacramento. Eventually, Pinoli said, this Sunburst Train route will include “excursion-based passenger trains” that center around food and beverages local to Ventura County.

“We’re surrounded by lemons, by oranges, and [want] to embrace the produce that’s in this area and incorporate that into the train,” Pinoli said. “So it wouldn’t be a stretch to see maybe orange- or lemon-flavored citrus drinks, like if you want a margarita on the train we can squeeze the fruit for you fresh. Maybe chips and guacamole.”

As we pedaled our way out of Santa Paula, the homes and Del Tacos began to disappear. After about 15 minutes we arrived at Prancer’s Farm , where we had just enough time to browse either the farm store or the petting zoo.

A person surrounded by goats.

We chose petting goats and pigs over fresh strawberries, growing especially attached to a tiny goat my partner named Denzel (because Denzel Washington is also, famously, the G.O.A.T. ).

Once we left Prancer’s, the views were especially beautiful. Suddenly the landscape was split into four layers: grass, citrus trees, mountains and an enticingly cloud-speckled sky. From afar, we even got a glimpse of some large patches of bright orange flowers.

Throughout the ride we passed over small bridges, modest waterfalls and a few bumpy spots. Most of the ride, our bike was set to the third gear, which brought us to about the speed limit with little to no peddling.

A landscape photo of a grove of young trees, with grassy mountains in the background.

“We are restricted to a speed of 15 miles per hour on this line,” Pinoli said. “But these bikes can go anywhere from 25 to 30 miles an hour.”

Tourism railbikes, similar to the ones that Mendocino Railway runs, seemed to find their stride in 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions forced many people outdoors.

“It gives people the ability to get outside and reconnect with friends,” Pinoli said. “During the throes of COVID, we couldn’t build these fast enough. They were in such huge demand.”

Take me home, country (rail)roads

The appeal of riding on a railbike is similar to driving a convertible — you get to feel the wind and sun on your face — but traveling on a train track also means that nobody has to steer. And you don’t have to be a train enthusiast or an avid biker to enjoy the experience.

When we arrived at the turnaround point, where we were supposed to stop and have a picnic lunch, it became clear that the route hadn’t totally been finished.

A photo of two people on a railbike, passing by a large train car decorated with lights and wreaths on a sunny day.

“Our picnic stop is abbreviated because there’s a bridge to the east that [was] washed out with the big storms in January, so we can’t cross over the river to get into Fillmore,” Pinoli said.

Once the storm damage is repaired, Pinoli said they’re hoping to pair with local vendors who could provide food at that halfway point. But because the picnics weren’t set up yet, I packed sandwiches (from a personal Culver City favorite, Monroe Place ) that we ate on the ride back.

Pinoli added that they’re hoping to expand railbike tours beyond four days a week and eventually start running food-and-beverage-centered passenger trains along with the railbikes and freight.

Julia Carmel and Reanna Cruz looking backward from their railbike, smiling at the camera.

By the time we got back to Santa Paula, I was chilly enough that I was looking forward to getting back into my car. And even though I did minimal pedaling, I felt a sense of accomplishment when I returned my helmet to the seat.

Generally, I’m not particularly inclined to shell out more than $200 for an afternoon of biking, but I can understand the appeal for train lovers and people who enjoy marveling at the natural Southern California landscapes.

“Not to be cheesy, but I low-key get what they were talking about in ‘America the Beautiful,’” my partner said as we gazed at the mountains. I let them revel in that feeling for a minute before informing them that ‘America the Beautiful’ was actually inspired by Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Robert Jason Pinoli, the president and CEO of Mendocino Railway, hopes to expand railbike tours beyond four days a week.

1 Day in Highlands, North Carolina

Spend a day in Highlands, North Carolina, to experience some of the best that Western North Carolina has to offer!

This adorable town is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains about an hour west of Asheville.

Once a sleepy mountain locale, Highlands has recently turned into a destination of its own, filled with arts venues, quaint cafes, and upscale hotels.

Plus, there are dozens of incredible hikes and outdoor adventures within easy driving distance of downtown Highlands as the town is conveniently located near the Nantahala National Forest and the Ellicott Rock Wilderness.

With only a single day in town, you’ll have to be smart with your time, but there’s still plenty you can do here in a short time!

Below, you’ll find everything you should do on a first time day trip to Highlands, NC, including our recommendations for restaurants, shopping, hiking, and more.

This post contains affiliates. If you choose to purchase through the links below, I will receive a commission at no charge to you.

Highlands Day Trip Itinerary

This itinerary assumes that you’re visiting Highlands, North Carolina, as a day trip.

If you are looking for a place to spend the night either before the following itinerary or after, I highly recommend the Highlander Mountain House .

Located at 270 Main Street, this hotel is within walking distance of everything in downtown Highlands, yet, it still feels out of the way.

Plus, there’s an onsite restaurant with offers up a great bluegrass brunch on the weekends.

Eat at Blue Bike Cafe for breakfast.

Start your day off with a heaping stack of freshly made waffles or pancakes at Blue Bike Cafe .

This charming restaurant serves up breakfast, brunch, and lunch from 7 AM to 3 PM every day of the week except Sundays.

You’ll find it in Mill Creek Highlands, a small shopping center on North 4th Street. This area is only about 2 blocks from Highlands’ Main Street, making it an easy walk if you’ve already found parking elsewhere. (I will note that the parking lot at Blue Bike Cafe is small, so you might do better to find public parking along Main Street, and then walk to eat.)

When you drive up, you’ll see a couple of blue bikes that stay parked outside to let you know you’ve arrived at the right place.

You’ll pass the small outdoor eating space, which is always packed on pretty mornings.

Check in at the front counter, which also double as the cash register for the little sundries shop. You can buy homemade jam, preserves, juices, cookies, and more here. Linger in the shop while you wait for your table to open up.

The menu here is focused, but you’ll find plenty to tempt you.

My kids love the cinnamon roll pancakes, which come with a heaping scoop of house-made cream cheese frosting. The French toast is made up of thick cut slices of fresh bread with plenty of cinnamon.

I prefer brunch more on the savory side, so I stick with my favorites: the huge Cobb Salad and the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The chorizo and grits is Southern and Tex-Mex fusion at its best with cheesy grits, sausage, pico de gallo, and eggs.

Really, you can’t go wrong with anything here!

Blue Bike Cafe is also dog friendly with a special doggie menu, too.

Shop along Main Street.

Once you’ve gotten your fill at Blue Bike Cafe, walk the two blocks over to Main Street.

(If you’ve tucked in as much as we do there, you’ll appreciate the stroll!)

Main Street is the heart of Highlands, and it’s filled with adorable boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and more.

Start at the intersection of North 3rd Street and Main Street, and then head back east, stopping at the stores that catch your eye.

Whenever we’re in town, we love browsing in any new shops that have opened, but we have a few that we return to again and again.

Mountain Bear Outfitters at 302 Main Street is a must for shoes and outdoor clothing. We somehow always end up here buying the kids new hiking shoes or sandals!

They have a great selection of Keens, Teva, and Chacos, which are must haves for exploring the many waterfall trails around here.

The Christmas Tree has been a staple in downtown Highlands for decades. I remember coming here with my parents when I was a kid to listen to their music box player and looking at all of the pretty ornaments.

We love picking up unique ornaments to help us remember our travels, so this is the perfect place to pick out your next addition to the Christmas tree.

There are multiple upscale women’s boutiques if you’re looking for a great new dress or shirt. My kids love The Toy Store at 364 Main Street which is packed with books and toys for kids of all ages. You’ll also find a small selection of kids shoes, hair bows, and clothing here.

The Silver Eagle Gallery at 349 Main Street is one of those places that I had to pry my kids out of. This store is filled with gemstones and jewelry.

My kids are obsessed with all things rocks, so they had to examine every one of them before taking several home.

In general, linger in the downtown area. There are so many pretty inns and houses here.

Grab lunch at Mountain Fresh Grocery.

If you’ve worked up an appetite by the time you get to the other end of the stores on Main Street, I’ve got the perfect selection for your lunch.

Mountain Fresh Grocery at 521 Main Street is a fun spot for everything from artisan pizzas to freshly made sandwiches. Here, you’ll also find a curated collection of gourmet groceries, snacks, wine, and drinks.

This is another spot that we come back to again and again! One of my first dates with my now-husband was here when we were students at Clemson University (which is just over the SC-NC line).

Now that we have kids, it’s a great lunch spot since there are multiple options on what the kids can order. That means everyone is happy!

Find your next great read.

Next, head over to one of the 2 bookstores in downtown Highlands.

You’ll find The Bookworm next door to Mountain Fresh Grocery, and Shakespeare and Company on Oak Street.

The Bookworm is small but packed full of used books. The staff here is incredibly friendly, and many of the local residents volunteer to keep sections of the bookstore tidy. You’ll find everything from previously loved hardback bestsellers to more obscure non-fiction.

The Bookworm is open year round, but does have reduced hours in the quieter winter months. Don’t forget to check out what’s on offer in their little free library out front.

Shakespeare and Company is a must-visit for book lovers. Tucked away from the crowds on Oak Street, this little used bookstore has room after room filled with treasures.

It’s only open during the warmer months, so check their Facebook page to see when the exact dates they’ll be welcoming customers are.

Frolic in Founders Park.

If it’s a nice day, head over to Founders Park. If you’re leaving Shakespeare and Company, the park is right next door!

No matter the time of year that you’re visiting Highlands, there’s something to do here.

The ice rink provides a quaint, cozy outing in winter, while the small splash pad will keep kids happy in summer.

On a beautiful spring or fall day, relax on one of the park’s benches as you sip a coffee.

Check out the town’s events calendar to see who is playing or performing at the McPhail Music Pavilion in the heart of the park.

There are also public restrooms near the corner of North 5th and Pine Streets.

Snack at Kilwin’s ice cream.

If your family is like mine, any time is a good time for ice cream!

We always end up at Kilwin’s at 341 Main Street when we’re visiting Highlands. Kilwin’s is a chain on the East Coast of gourmet chocolates and ice creams, and we love finding them when we are traveling.

Stop by to get some freshly made peanut butter cups, pecan turtles, or a scoop of ice cream in a waffle cone.

There are several tables outside as well as a small courtyard.

Go chase some waterfalls.

This corner of the South has SO many waterfalls! There are multiple waterfalls within a half an hour’s drive of downtown Highlands, so make time in your schedule to visit at least one.

Pinky Falls is the closest to downtown, so it’s the quickest option. At only about 2 miles by car from Main Street, you can easily access this off-the-beaten-path waterfall, which has several small cascades, a great sliding and swimming area, and a small beach with seating.

Learn more in our complete Pinky Falls guide!

If you head out of town on Highway 64 to the west, you’ll come across Sequoyah Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Dry Falls within quick succession. All 3 of these are less than a 15 minute drive from downtown Highlands.

Sequoyah Falls is created by a dam on the western end of Lake Sequoyah, but the cascade is lovely.

Bridal Veil Falls is so close to the road that you don’t need to even get out of the car! If you do want to get up closer to the falls, there is a small pull-out and parking area to allow you to walk underneath it. Years ago, you could actually drive behind the falls, which was quite the experience.

Dry Falls is another must-do water fall in the area, and the most popular of the 4 I’ve mentioned here.

If you have the America the Beautiful pass, parking at Dry Falls is free. Otherwise, you can get a parking pass for a couple of dollars at one of the self-pay kiosks in the parking lot.

The name comes from the fact that you can walk behind a giant sheet of water caused by the Cullasaja River pouring over a cliff in the Nantahala National Forest. It’s an easy 1/4 mile hike from the parking lot (but note that there are many stairs to navigate).

If you’d prefer to see the falls from a distance, there is a new wooden observation platform just off of the parking area.

Note: if you’d prefer to have a guided tour of this area, Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Highlands are all stops on the Asheville private waterfalls tour .

Take a photo at the Will Henry Stevens Covered Bridge.

On the way back into Highlands, stop to see the Will Henry Stevens Covered Bridge on Route 64.

It’s on the very western edge of Main Street in the downtown area.

If the bridge is closed for repairs, you can still pull into the paved section of road before the bridge to get a photo.

Note that the bridge is low and won’t accommodate larger trucks, RVs, or vans.

You can also access the bridge from the other entrance to the Bascom Arts Center off of Oak Street.

Get cultured.

Finish off your perfect day in this adorable mountain town by taking in a show at the Highlands Performing Arts Center.

There’s a little bit of everything on offer here. From live bluegrass concerts to simulcast operas from New York, the Arts Center’s yearly calendar is surprisingly robust for a tiny town in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

You’ll find the center situated between Chestnut and Laurel Streets just north of Main Street.

I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and will never tire of the West Coast, although I spent several years living in Southeast Asia, about as far from California as you can get. Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. The beach is my happy place and when I am not there (or writing), you will usually find me baking, watching movies, and cuddling my pugs. I have traveled around the country and around the world, and it never, ever gets old. Being able to combine my passion for travel and my love of writing is nothing short of a dream.

  • Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum (Joshua Tree): The late Noah Purifoy left behind the most unique display of large-scale sculpture in the Desert Art Museum of Assemblage Art. In 1989 he moved to the Mojave Desert and spent the last 15 years of his life crafting the creation from junked materials. He died in 2004. This extraordinary landscape is one of California’s greatest art exhibits. Folks can access this mind-blowing inspirational scene every day from dawn to dusk for free! Sign in at the kiosk when you visit where brochures are available for self-guided tours. Private group tours and docent-guided are also available with reservations.

Buena Vista Park Pond And Open Space (Vista): This lovely 121.3 acres offers natural scenery of the pond and rich, wooded hiking trails. The Agua Hedionda Trail is a 2.3-mile easy loop along a pretty stream with plenty of shade which comes in handy during the warmer months. Enjoy the benches and multiple paved paths that connect back to the main loop. The Buena Vista Park Loop is another easy hike that goes about a mile down a gravel and dirt path. The swamp of the park entrance offers great photos of ducks and geese!

  • Lake Gregory Regional Park (Crestline): This multi-season adventure awaits offering a wide variety of activities. In the summer pack a picnic and enjoy a day at the beach. Splash around at the water park, go paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Plan a fishing trip this fall and rent a boat to spend an entire day on the blue water with a backdrop of vivid foliage. Book an e-bike tour, or take a walk on a nature trail. Do you roller skate? You can learn at the exciting skate park. Bring your dogs too for their very own dog park. By the way, this place is in the stunning San Bernardino National Forest where peaceful places abound, in case you just want to sit and do nothing.
