One of my favorite travel pastimes is eating street food . So one of my goals of things to do in Kathmandu was learning about the best foods of Nepal.

But eating Nepal street food can feel sketchy for western travelers. So called in help from my Nepali food guide, Kanti of the Backstreet Academy , who took me on my second Kathmandu food tour: The Secret Tour.

A Food Tour of Kathmandu… a secret one!

If you’re like me, you love learning local secrets, learn about the foods of Nepal and traveling deeper. So I was pretty sold by the idea of a Kathmandu food tour . Throw in  hidden gems of Kathmandu and you’ve got a winner. The Secret Tour definitely was that– a deletable winner!

Backstreet Academy’s Secret Tour is a walking tour showcasing some of the best foods of Nepal. You’ll find yourself slipping through darkened doorways which opened to residential courtyards and temples. You’re taken to popular local haunts and visit streets that are known for housing specialty items.

Meat lovers tour vs a vegetarian tour

Backstreet Academy’s Secret Tour offers five dishes and two variations of its secret tour. One  tour is a menu and route for meat lovers. Another route and menu was   for vegetarian/vegan lovers . The meat lovers tour is a little more customary for Nepali culture, as Nepal is not a predominantly vegetarian culture. While Nepalese culture is not known for eating beef (as cows are considered sacred) they will indulge in buffalo meat.

Popular meat choices are  choila and chewa , a spiced grilled buffalo meat with beaten rice.  Foods like momos occasionally have options called “buff” (aka buffalo meat).

Contrarily, I took the vegetarian tour, where my substitute for the buffalo was potato samosa. It doesn’t sound like a comparable tradeoff, but the route and the popular local haunt I visited was very interesting and I was not disappointed. Backstreet Academy gives equal indulgence to both gastronomical worlds.

Memorable foods from my secret Kathmandu food tour:

After feeding pigeons at a local temple, which is said to improve dharma, we went through a darkened doorway, upstairs to a non-descript Bara shop. It was clear there was no way I’d have found this shop on my own and even had I, I wouldn’t have known to trust the food there. But it was a popular local shop for bara and yomari.

Bara shops have gotten popular in Kathmandu. Originally a festival food, bara is a Nepalese pancake, made of lentils. It’s often served with either a side dish of curried soy, mushrooms or potatoes.

bara shop

Yomari is a festival food easily recognizable as a unique shape reminiscent of a large seashell or pasta shell. It is made of steamed rice flour with a variety of fillings from bitter molasses, chocolate, khuwa (sweet thickened milk or curd; similar ingredients of the Indian/Nepali sweet ‘barfi”), etc…  The dish is served in Newar households during winter as a way to combat the cold; it is said to be a food which keeps you warm.

yomari, nepali festival desserts, popular Nepali foods

Kanti took me to a 100 year old family-owned sweet shop in Thamel where we tried malpuwa. Malpuwa is a popular Nepali sweet. It takes haluwa (a sweetened semolina paste) and wraps it in a thin flour pancake.

100 year old sweet shop Thamel, malpuwa dessert, nepali desserts

Slipping through another doorway alley, we entered a courtyard to Ranjana Soda, an outdoor food cart selling their specialty of momos. In Nepal you’ll find a large variety of momos:  the most common are buff momos, chicken momos and vegetable momos. If you ever see “Buff” on a Nepali menu, that term is abbreviated for buffalo meat. There are parts of Nepal in which it is against the law to slaughter a cow.  Each type of momo was distinguished by their shape– that’s a good way of telling them apart.

best lassi in kathmandu

We didn’t try the Nepali pizza. Instead, Kanti took me to Tip Top Sweets , a popular tucked away joint off New Street where they sold samosas and Nepali sweets. Samosas are a deep fried wrapped dough crust filled with spiced, curried and/or mashed potatoes.   This particular shop is known for its crust, fluffy, light, like a cookie with a secret sweet sour sauce. They also sell kachori , a similar deep fried dough crust filled with lentils.

tip top samosas, best samosas in kathmandu

Dahi Puri Chaat

I’ve tried the common street pani puri and chaat in Varanasi from a street food hawker. Dahi puri chaat is a different form of pani puri.  This dish we tried from a popular local street truck in the New Street area.  Dahi means yogurt, puri is a deep fried hollow ball, chaat is a mixture of things of chutney, onions, lime juice, fried noodles. You can get a plate of puris for 70Rs on the streets and it is heaven in one mouthful bite.

Sightseeing Kathmandu

The walking tour of the neighborhoods of Thamel were a welcome balance to the Nepali foods we gorged on.  On our way to the next food vendor, Kanti would point out a popular local temple ritual, a secret local temple,  or a street you’d shop at for wedding celebrations.  She’d tell me the history of the area or its popularity with locals. Each neighborhood introduction paved the way for a type of food.

Go on an empty stomach. Although the menu looks small, the tour will feed you a lot. I had an absolutely wonderful time. The biggest secret Backstreet Academy and their food guides shed light on are the popular mainstay foods that are close to Nepali hearts, traditions and palates.

Traditional Nepali Cuisine: A Blend of Flavor and Culture

Nepali cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavors, influenced by the country’s rich cultural heritage and diverse ethnic communities. With its emphasis on fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and unique cooking techniques, traditional Nepali cuisine offers a mouthwatering journey into the heart of Nepal’s gastronomic culture.

At the core of Nepali cuisine is the concept of “Dal Bhat”, a staple dish that consists of lentil soup (dal) and steamed rice (bhat). This hearty dish is the backbone of Nepali meals, providing nourishment and sustenance to the locals. It is often accompanied by a variety of vegetable curries, pickles, and yogurt, creating a balanced and flavorsome meal.

One of the defining features of Nepali cuisine is the skillful use of spices. With its rich flavors and aromas, spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cardamom play a vital role in enhancing the taste of Nepali dishes. These spices are carefully blended to create a unique and distinct flavor profile that is characteristic of Nepali cuisine.

Meat lovers will find a wide variety of flavorful dishes to satisfy their cravings. From succulent chicken and lamb curries to spicy grilled meats like sekuwa and sukuti, Nepali cuisine offers a range of meat-based delicacies. The use of spices and marinating techniques adds depth and complexity to these dishes, creating a symphony of flavors.

Vegetarian options are plentiful in Nepali cuisine, with a focus on utilizing locally sourced vegetables and legumes. From the classic dish of aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower curry) to tasty stir-fried greens like saag, vegetarian dishes showcase the bounty of Nepal’s agricultural produce and the creativity of its cooks.

As you delve deeper into the culinary traditions of Nepal, you’ll discover the influence of its neighboring countries, such as Tibet and India. This cross-cultural exchange has birthed dishes like momos, a beloved street food delicacy that resembles dumplings and can be filled with an assortment of ingredients like vegetables, meat, or cheese. These steamed or fried delights have become a cornerstone of Nepali cuisine and are a must-try for any food lover visiting Kathmandu.

An integral part of Nepali cuisine is the use of fermented foods, which add a tangy and distinctive taste to many dishes. Gundruk, a fermented leafy green vegetable, is commonly used in traditional Nepali recipes, while dhido, a staple food made from fermented corn or millet, is often enjoyed with a side of spiced vegetables or meat curries.

Traditional Nepali cuisine is not just about the flavors but also about the cultural values and rituals associated with food. Sharing a meal with family and friends is a cherished tradition in Nepal, and food often becomes a means of celebration and togetherness.

Embarking on a culinary journey through the traditional flavors of Nepal will not only tantalize your taste buds but also provide a deeper understanding of the cultural significance and richness of Nepali cuisine. Trying Nepal Street Food | Kathmandu Food Tour

secret food tour kathmandu

My first trip to Nepal in 2013 is still buzzing around in my mind, ever since my first trip it is one of my favorite countries to visit. Even after more than 150 countries as of March 2023 and the most amazing adventures around the world , Nepal still stands out! In this blog you can find my adventures looking for the best Nepal street food in Kathmandu, including a funny video.

Apart from visiting Kathmandu for the Himalayan Travel Mart in 2019 I also went trekking in the Langtang Valley, a 6-day trek up to 4.770 meters / 15.650 feet . Another highlight in my 7 years around the world for sure. While trekking in the Himalayas (read all about it in the link above) you get served the same kind of food day in day out in the tea houses along the way so when I got back to Kathmandu and found out about the Backstreet Acamdemy Kathmandu food tour it was super excited to finally try something else than Chowmein.

Backstreet Academy food tour Kathmandu

Trying the best Nepal street food is why you want to go on this tour, and I can tell you already it is totally worth it! Backstreet Academy is apparently active in loads of Southeast Asia countries I found out but co-founded by two Nepalese guys in 2014. Running Kathmandu food tours in their own city started as a passion for Nepal street food and now became a big company. Well done guys!

Vegetarian or Vegan? No problem

The Kathmandu food tours of Backstreet Academy are perfect for vegetarians as apart from the Momo place everything is purely vegetarian. The momo place serves buffalo and chicken momos, but vegetarians can choose veggie momos instead of course.

In case you are vegan no worries, there also are vegan options as well as gluten free travelers. Just let your guide know and they will make sure you get your share of Nepal street food.

Here is my vlog about about finding the most tasty Nepali street food in the Kathmandu streets:

Is it safe to eat Nepal street food?

Totally understand where the question comes from because everything that is not prepared according to all our Western regulation we automatically question. But just like most things in the news about foreign countries: don’t believe everything they say! Let just say there is a higher risk of getting ill than in a Western country. But hey the Kathmandu food on the streets is totally fine to eat. On this Nepal trip I spent more than a week in Kathmandu and ate the most random Kathmandu street food. Yummy and cheap. So yes, please try the Nepal street food!

Update your adventure on the streets in Kathmandu while on the go! Don't wait for shitty WiFi in your hotel room, check out my complete guide for buying a sim card for Nepal . Local prepaid sim cards are super cheap, easy to get and you will have a 4G internet connection while traveling in Nepal.

Kathmandu walking tour to secret food stalls

The Kathmandu street food tour is a walking tour at the same time as we met up in Thamel and walked together through Thamel to the old city where the actual food tour took place. Thamel is the popular tourist district where you can find all the shops, guesthouses, restaurants and nightlife. Obviously these Kathmandu restaurants are catered to tourists and although they everywhere say ‘traditional Nepali food’, these are NOT the restaurants where you will find authentic Nepal street food.

kathmandu nepal streetlife

One of the things I liked most about the Kathmandu street food tour with Backstreet Academy is that they brought us to places I would have never gotten myself. Most of the Kathmandu restaurants we visited were in busy narrow and dark alley’s somewhere in the old city of Kathmandu. Even though you would find these narrow streets then you would have still not guessed which doors or passageways to enter. Looking back at our food tour I think it is definitely one of the best things to do in Kathmandu.

kathmamndu streets

Before the Kathmandu food tour starts

Our meeting point was in Thamel and we got a little briefing about the tour. First we were offered face masks as the streets of Kathmandu are pretty polluted. Non of us opted for one, but in case you want Backstreet Academy offers complimentary face masks. Also included in the tour is drinking water so whenever you are thirsty let one of your guides know and they get you bottled drinking water.

We were informed that there were 5 Kathmandu street food stalls/restaurants where we would stop, in fact it turned out to be 6 from what I remember. Depending on how busy we would be filming and taking photos the tour would last approximately 2,5 to 3 hours.

You basically don’t need to bring anything, but I would recommend you to bring your cameras, GoPro’s, smart phones, etc as you will get to unique places to visit in Kathmandu. Obviously keep your belongings close and use common sense although there is no need to worry about your expensive gear. Kathmandu is a safe place!

You might want to bring hand sanitiser by the way, always handy before trying Nepal street food in the dirty streets of Kathmandu!

Kathmandu food tour

The walk from Thamel all the way to the old city of Kathmandu takes about 20 minutes through narrow bustling streets. There is so much to see on every corner that it took a little longer as we constantly were taking photos everywhere. You will pass by the local street market and a dozen interesting shops here and there.

nepal street food tour kathmandu 15

Stop 1: Barra

At the time we reached our first stop I was laughing because I could not believe where we were going. Into this tiny passageway? Really? I barely fitted in and had to stoop. At the end there was a tiny little Kathmandu street food joint serving Barra.

Until now I still don’t really know what Barra is but in my own words it is something like a savory small pancake with some kind of slightly spiced curry on the side. Our Nepal street food tour started off amazing, because I was a fan of this dish straight away! Barra was probably my favorite Kathmandu street food we tried that day! YUMMY AF.

nepal street food barra

At the same street food stall we also got to try Yomari, a kind of dessert I reckon. It was a big steamed dumpling with inside some kind of sweet substance. It kind of reminded me of condensed milk. Sweet, nice for a bite, but I’m not really a sweet tooth.

yomari nepal street food

Stop 2: Best Momos in Kathmandu

Obviously we had to try Momos on this Kathmandu food tour, the most famous Nepal street food. You will find Momos everywhere around Kathmandu, but where to get good ones? I had tried several already on my Nepal trip and honestly non of them were bad, so when they told me we are now going to try the best Momos in Kathmandu I was like yeah right.

kathmandu food tour 2

Sounds cheesy now but I must say these Momos were the best I had on my whole Nepal trip. Just like stop 1, we would have never found this Kathmandu street food joint as it was somewhere hidden in a fallen apart courtyard in a narrow passageway. When I walked in I was like yeah right where are we eating Momos then? LOL. End good, all good, they were delicious!

best momo kathmandu

Momos differ per etnic group in Nepal, some only make vegetable Momos, some only with chicken, buffalo, etc. Momos in the mountains are much bigger and everyone has its own sauce as well. I like the Momos with the spicy sauce in Kathmandu the most. While trekking in the mountains in Nepal you are often served Momos with ketchup but that is just laziness of the chef!

Stop 3: Tip Top Samosas

Why Tip Top? Because of a tailor shop! Yeah I admit that sounds a little bit strange, but of course another hidden courtyard off a busy street in Kathmandu center you will find one of the most famous Kathmandu street food stalls. On a small courtyard full of scooters there is a tailor called Tip Top and now the whole courtyard is called Tip Top. As this is where they apparently sell the best samosas in Kathmandu the place is now well known as the Tip Top Samosas.

kathmandu food tour 3

Apart from the delicious samosas we also got to try Pani Puri and a Jalebi for dessert. Pani Puri is a fried crisp containing a bunch a spices in flavoured water or at least that is what I wrote down. It looked like a Calimero egg with some weird coloured substance in it. It was delicious though…

Jalebi is deep fried flour soaked in sugar syrup. Super sweet, good for a little bite. I would say something so sweet, may be it is better to share! :)

jalebi nepal street food

Stop 4: Flavored soda

It was time for a drink after all these delicious Kathmandu street food stalls. Water was served by our tour guide, but we now stopped at a special place where they made their own sodas. Be careful it will make you burp. These homemade sodas come in a long list of varieties. Some are obvious like lemon, raspberry, mango. But there is also German Flag and a bunch of other weird names.

ranjana soda center kathmandu street food

I tried the ginger cola and the raspberry watermelon. Apparently, it is good for digestion and you have to drink it out fast as the fizz is gone quickly. It tasted pretty salty and wasn’t really my thing, it also made me burp like crazy and my tummy made weird sounds for the next 10 minutes. Nothing wrong though, surely good for digestion!

Stop 5: Dahi Puri Chaat

We already got to our last food stop and this was a delicious one. We earlier already got to try the Pani Puri and now we tried another Puri. The Dahi Puri Chaat was a plate of fried crisps filled with masala and chutney and topped off with yoghurt. The mix of the refreshing yoghurt, the crisps and the chutneys definitely made this one of my favorite Nepal street food dishes.

nepal street food tour kathmandu 19

The places looked a little like flat iron building with a lot of fantasy! LOL

Stop 6: Lassi

To end our Kathmandu street food tour we went to the most famous lassi place in Kathmandu. It is located right in the heart of the city center on a busy crossing. The bustling streets and the crazy traffic give this lassi place an even more authentic feel. You would probably never think about stopping here for a lassi, but when I tasted it I was happy we did. It was the perfect place to end our food tour.

My Experience with Backstreet Academy

We did the food tour in the afternoon. We met up around 15.00 and finished our tour around 18.00. At the end of the tour we were all full and dinner that night was postponed a little. As you have been able to read and see in the embedded video I had a great time strolling through the busy streets of Kathmandu finding these hidden street food stalls. Without this Backstreet Academy food tour I would have never enjoyed Nepal street food so much as it is hard to know where to go and find quality street food.

nepal street food tour kathmandu 2

Backstreet Academy also runs breakfast tours and for the daredevils they have a special food tour in Kathmandu: Fear Factor Tour. In this tour you will get to try some crazy food like: brains, lungs, testicles, penis, etc. You know what I am going to try next time, right? :)

Thank you for keeping up with the Traveltomtom adventures I hope you liked my experiences in the streets of Kathmandu. In case you are interested in more about the Backstreet Acamdemy food tour in Kathmandu then click here for more info.

The Best Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

By: Author Nathan

Sharing is caring!

A group of us teamed up for a walking food tour of Kathmandu. Learn about the great foods to try when you travel to Nepal!

Recently, after finishing the Himalayan Travel Mart press trip, a group of us teamed up for a walking food tour of Kathmandu. If you follow the blog, you know I love walking food tours and have enjoyed them in Morocco , Hong Kong , and Istanbul .

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

Joining me were Stephen and Nadja of A Backpackers Tale , Steph from Every Steph , Raphael from Journey Wonders  and last but not least- our patient and knowledgeable local guide Bhisma, who probably had no idea what he was getting himself into when he signed up to take a group of bloggers on a tour.

We met at a central meeting point, which was great because it would be the only moment of the tour where I knew exactly where I was. Hands down, my favorite thing about this tour is that other than one-stop for a lassi drink, we would never have been able to find any of the locations on our own.

Each stop was down some narrow, winding alley. We followed our guide through complicated streets, ducked under half walls, and crossed hidden courtyards in search of the best local food.

Our first stop was the perfect example of this. Down a maze-like alley and up a dark set of narrow stairs, we found a group of local women hard at work.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

They sat crouched around pans and large flat top cooking surfaces expertly grilling and flipping what looked like pancakes.

We all sat and watched as they worked, passing out dishes on a first-come, first-serve basis. And what we were served was definitely worth the wait. This dish is known as bara, which are spiced lentil patties. These were served with potatoes and I, of course, doused mine with a spicy sauce.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

At the same shop, we were served yomari, a Nepalese sweet. Yomari is a steamed dumpling filled with two different fillings. Half contained sweetened milk (khuwa) and the other half concentrated sugar cane.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

To be honest, this was the only food from the tour that I didn’t care for, but that’s probably because I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I actually would have preferred a second serving of the spicy lentil dish!

Back down the stairs, through the busy streets, and down yet another alley, our next stop was one I knew I was going to like. If you’re following me on social media, you know I’ve been stuffing my face with momos since the plane touched down.

Momos are a different, savory type of steamed dumplings. Though they originated from Tibet, they are now Nepalese staple food. You can find momos filled with many different combinations- chicken, cheese and potato, pork, etc. I even found Bolognese momos, which weren’t great. At all.

I knew I would love the type of momos from this tour because I’ve had it so many times: buffalo momos. It may sound odd, but because the majority of Nepalese are Hindu, buffalo is the most common meat, more so than even chicken.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

And, just as I expected, these were amazing. Bite-size dumplings filled with minced meat and covered in a spicy sauce.

Again, we followed our guide, this time ducking through a small doorway and emerging into a courtyard filled with people either standing around eating or waiting in line. I knew any place this full of locals and with a line in the middle of the afternoon must be good.

The vendors sold several different types of food, but we had come for what may be the largest samosas I’ve ever had. Samosas are a pastry-like dough stuffed with a savory filling and then deep-fried. These were served fresh and hot out of the fryer and had been filled with potatoes, peas, onions, and cilantro (coriander) before being topped off with a slightly spicy/sweet sauce.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

I loved the samosa- the filling was quite delicious. I probably could have done with a bit less of the sauce (again, the sweet tooth thing), but overall it was great. The filling was savory and hearty. Two of these could be a complete meal.

Also, I don’t know if you noticed the bowls from both the momos and samosa, but they are all-natural, completely biodegradable bowls that seemed to be made from leaves. I was impressed to see they were being mindful of the environment.

Our next stop was perhaps the most interesting dish of the tour. Dahi Puri is a dish of flour-filled smashed potatoes topped with chutney, yogurt, and red chili powder.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

You’re meant to eat each one in just one bite. I really enjoyed these- the yogurt on top was especially good.

As the tour continued, we passed local points of interest and temples. Our guide enthusiastically presented the history of each of the sites and explained their relevance. I’ve always enjoyed learning about the background of a place while trying local dishes.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

Next, we stopped for lassi, a drink I’m familiar with. If you haven’t had lassi, it’s a yogurt-based drink blended with water and spices. To be honest, I don’t usually care for lassi, but I really enjoyed this one.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

What made this lassi so different that I liked it? It was topped with dried fruits and nuts. I would drink a lassi a day with what essentially amounted to trail mix added into it!

Our guide also told us this version contains Nepali butter which, though it may make it less healthy, also helps explains why I liked it more than other versions.

As we wound the tour down, we stopped for flavored sodas. The vendor offered a host of different varieties of flavorings to add to soda water. Orange, lemon, ginger, medicinal, herbs, etc.

I opted for a classic lemon soda. It was extra fizzy and a great light drink after a few of the heavier dishes.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

No tour in Nepal would be complete without finishing with a glass of tea. It was a great way to sit around and talk about the tour, debate our favorite dishes, and learn more about Nepali life in general.

Walking Food Tour of Kathmandu, Nepal

When you’re visiting Kathmandu I highly recommend this tour. It’s a great way to try some of the best in local dishes from vendors known to have high standards while also learning about the city and its people.

Practical Information: Our guide made sure to take us to only well-known places with high standards of cleanliness. Eating street food in any developing country can be sketchy, but not one of us reported any upset stomachs or the like after this tour.

Disclaimer: I would like to thank Backstreet Academy for inviting me as their guest on this tour. Although the tour was complimentary all opinions remain my own, as always.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
