Pokémon brilliant diamond & shining pearl: great marsh (safari zone) guide.
The Great Marsh is the safari zone of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and it is filled with rare Pokémon to catch and items to find.
The Great Marsh is the safari zone of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl , and it is filled with rare Pokémon to catch and items to find. Safari zones in every Pokémon game are essentially mini-games in which players are presented with a limited number of Safari Balls to catch as many Pokémon as possible. Additionally, players are also presented with the challenge of being able to only walk a certain number of steps.
One of the defining features of the Great Marsh in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the trolley system. The trolley system is a free means of transportation that takes players to various areas of the Great Marsh without costing them any of their limited 500 steps. It's also the easiest way to access Pokémon in certain areas. Once the National Dex is unlocked in Pokémon BDSP , trainers will want to make sure they take full advantage of the trolley system to access more rare Pokémon.

The Great Marsh is located in Pastoria City in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl , and it's available at any time. To explore the Great Marsh, players will have to pay 500 Poké Dollars at the entrance counter. Additionally, players can pay another 100 Poké Dollars at the binoculars on the second floor of the same building to see which Pokémon are available in which area. New Pokémon are in the Great Marsh every day, and knowing which ones are located in which area is imperative to catch them all. The Defog HM in Pokémon BDSP is also located in the Great Marsh and is given out by an NPC with green hair to the right of the entrance.
Pokémon Encounters in the Great Marsh in Pokémon BDSP
Although the majority of encounters in the Great Marsh in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are for common Pokémon like Starly, Bibarel, and Wooper, players can find the rarer encounters rotating daily. Additionally, having fishing rods grants more access to purely aqua-based Pokémon like Magikarp and Barboach. The better the fishing rod players bring with them and use, the better the Pokémon they can catch. With a Super Rod, players can even catch Whiscash, Carvanha, and Gyarados in the Great Marsh. The Super Rod in Pokémon BDSP can be found by speaking with an NPC fisherman on Route 225.
Before receiving the National Dex, players can expect to find the following Pokémon through daily binocular encounters in the Great Marsh:

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get the Most Out of the Safari Zone
Trainers looking to complete their Pokédex in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will need to make the most of Pastoria City's Great Marsh.
The Pokémon series has a ton of different recurring elements that fans tend to either love or hate depending on the generation. For example, the frequently-present Safari Zone allows trainers to participate in a unique catching mini-game as they track down rare Pokémon. Generation IV's take on the Safari Zone, the Great Marsh, returns in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl 's Pastoria City and remains fairly unchanged from its original incarnation .
With the inclusion of the Grand Undergound's unique biomes and the Pokémon that appear there, the Great Marsh's less-varied Pokémon options may initially make it seem like little more than a fun distraction. However, there's still plenty of reason to check out Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl 's Safari Zone. With consistent Pokémon between both versions of the game and some notable rare creatures available, here are some things players should keep in mind to make the most out of their next Safari.

How the Great Marsh Works
In addition to limiting trainers to 500 steps and 30 Safari Balls for each visit, the Great Marsh features a unique catching system, as well as unique catch rates for the Pokémon who appear there. Typically, a Pokémon species has a set catch rate that determines how difficult they are to catch in the wild. In the Great Marsh, these numbers are either lowered or raised depending on the species. There's also a unique chance to flee statistic applied to Great Marsh Pokémon, who are not battled and cannot be weakened like other wild Pokémon.
While it is currently unclear if specific numbers have been adjusted for the remakes, in the original Diamond and Pearl , players had the best chance to catch Pokémon if they exclusively threw Safari Balls. While throwing bait or mud may seem useful on paper, players have found that just throwing Safari Balls gives the best chance at catching a Pokémon before they flee. While it may be a bit tedious to just spam a single option, players looking to get some of the rare finds in the Great Marsh should give this strategy a try.

Come with the Right Tools
While players can absolutely jump straight into the Great Marsh as soon as they step foot in Pastoria City, they won't be able to get the most out of the Safari Zone without the right tools. Certain Pokémon require the right field moves and key items to even encounter. Revisiting the Great Marsh with the ability to Surf and use the Super Rod will let trainers catch a far wider variety of Pokémon -- including some that make the Great Marsh worth visiting.
For example, Pokémon like Carvana and Whishcash can only be caught with a Super Rod. Whishcash is especially notable for being a fantastic defensive Pokémon with the always-powerful Water/Ground dual-typing. Having Surf and the Super Rod also opens the player up to the daily rotating Pokémon in water environments, provide even more opportunities and ways to encounter different kinds fo Pokémon.
Use the Binoculars Before Starting a Safari
Knowing which Pokémon are in the daily rotation and where certain ones are located can help players really make the most out of the time limit. To check the entire Great Marsh, players will have to spend 300 Poké Dollars to look through the binoculars on the second floor of the Great Marsh building. Some of these Pokémon really make the Safari worth the time and effort, particularly those who can only her caught here, and checking the binoculars can help players decide whether they should visit or wait for another day.

Keep an Eye Out for Useful Items
Long-time Pokémon fans will know that, wherever there's a Safari Zone, there are important items hidden inside. The Great Marsh in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is no different, as players can find some rare and unique items if they take the time to explore each zone. One of the Great Marsh's most important finds is the TM for Defog, a former HM move that greatly helps players traverse Route 210 and reach Celestic Town.
Outside of that, players can also find a Rare Candy, various Poké Balls, nuggets and different kinds of healing items scattered around the various areas. There's also a Toxic Plate located in Area 2 for players looking to collect every kind of plate in the game, plus various items that can be sold for Poké Dollars. It should be noted that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl features Diamond and Pearl 's item layout, not Platinum 's.

The Great Marsh
So, do you want a piece of this game's version of the Safari Game? Then you needn't search any further than Pastoria City. Travel to Pastoria City at any time during the game and head north out of the town (through the rather elaborate building) to the entrance to the Safari Game ("The Great Marsh" is simply the name of the location where the game is played). You can't just enter this area for nothing, however, and Poke Balls of the normal variety can't be used here. Instead, you have to pay $500 to play, you get 30 "Safari Balls" to use to try to catch the rare Pokemon of the area, and worst yet, you won't be able to fight, gain experience or money, or do anything of the like. You don't battle Pokemon here... you bait them, make them angry, and throw Safari Balls at them, hoping for the best!
Upon your first visit, pay your money at the desk. You'll be carried out of the building automatically thereafter - you'll find yourself back outside in the marsh itself when you regain control. If you're curious, about what was upstairs in the entrance building, you can use binoculars located there at $100 per use to view the Pokemon that are only appearing during your visit, but may not always be there. Pretty interesting, but hardly necessary,
There are no trainers in this area, regrettably, so the people you encounter through your travels here will only talk to you, not offer to fight. There's a giant tram system running vertically through the middle of the Great Marsh which you can use to get from place to place, or you can simply walk. Either way, the swampy land will likely catch you often as you walk through it - just jam the d-pad around frantically to get yourself loose. The grass in the swamp, naturally, is where you will run into wild Pokemon, but as mentioned earlier, you won't fight them. You come here to capture Pokemon - you can always run from battles if you're only here for the items.
Speaking of items, there's a fairly important (but unnecessary) item that can be acquired here, HM05 , which teaches the skill Defog to able Pokemon. You can acquire it from the girl wandering near the entrance to the Great Marsh, and the HM's use is in densely fogged areas of Sinnoh. Using this HM will remove that fog so you can see where you're going. If you're interested in the other eight items in the Great Marsh, we can give you the locations of those as well.
You can grab a Paralyz Heal to the right of the entrance by going around the body of water and grabbing the item. On the left side of the entrance, you can grab an Antidote , thankfully without having to travel through much grass or swampland. If you take the tram up to the next (middle) area, you can grab a Super Potion on your right, as well as a Poke Ball further north in the middle area (it'll take a bit of walking, though). Also, grab the Honey on the far left side (which will require some walking, also). And finally, if you take the tram to the topmost area, you can grab three more items. Start by heading right from the tram, and northward to the Great Ball . Then, circle left around the tram station to grab the Super Repel . And finally, a Potion can be found to the south of the last item.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Great Marsh guide – All encounters, daily Pokémon, and more
Within every new iteration of Pokémon , Game Freak and the other developers working on the games find new ways to take old concepts and bring them to life in new ways. That can mean something as simple as giving new evolutions to species that didn’t have them before, mechanics like Mega Evolution of Dynamaxing taking battling to the next level, or simply seeing an area that worked and flipping it into something else.
In the case of Sinnoh and the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes on Nintendo Switch, the Great Marsh is the gen four equivalent of the Safari Zone and was actually the first time the games ditched the original name for something new.
After arriving in Pastoria City, players can pay 500 PokéDollars to enter the Great Marsh. They will be given 30 Safari Balls and a 500 step limit to enter the protected habitat of several rare Pokémon and attempt to capture them.
Once inside, players can traverse a set of six numbered areas by walking or via a small tram that is set up on a track in the center, which will help conserve steps if you need to go deep into the marsh.
Each area will contain different Pokémon native to the Great Marsh, with several species being exclusive to the area. There are also several mechanics you will need to learn before you actually go in and get to catching.
General Rules
The 500 PokéDollar fee, 30 Safari Balls, and 500 step limit are all pretty well-known aspects of the Great Marsh, as it follows the Safari Zone model from older titles. It also borrows the non-battling environment as well.
Once you enter the Great Marsh, you will not be battling other Pokémon, rather, you will be throwing Safari Balls, Mud, or Bait. Throwing Bait at a Pokémon will make it easier to catch but more likely to flee. Likewise, throwing Mud will make the Pokémon harder to catch but less likely to flee, with both changing the unique catch rate/flee rate by a stage of one per use.
Safari Balls have the same catch rate as a normal Poké Ball, so you won’t be getting any favors there and will need to utilize both Mud and Bait appropriately.
You can also run away from any encounter automatically if you don’t want to catch a Pokémon.
Changing Pokémon
A majority of the Pokémon you find in the Great Marsh will be common encounters, meaning they will be spread throughout multiple areas. There is a way to find rare Pokémon easily and make sure you know where to get hunting, though these encounters change daily.
This method involves going upstairs once you enter the main building of the Great Marsh before actually going into the marsh itself.
On the second floor, you will find some binoculars that are used for scenic viewing. Paying 100 PokéDollars will give you an overview of certain parts of the marsh and which Pokémon are available in each spot, though what Pokémon you see is completely randomized. If you get lucky, you could see a rare Pokémon from the lookout and can just make a beeline for that area to try and catch it.
You should at least take the time to explore the Great Marsh once fully to grab all of the items scattered throughout.
Full list of encounters
Now that you know all of the basics, here is a full list of the Pokémon you can encounter in BDSP’s version of the Great Marsh—split between regular random encounters in the day and night, surfing and fishing encounters, and the Daily Binocular Pokémon, along with what changes once you unlock the National Pokédex.

On a ledge just south of the north gatehouse, you'll find the entrance to the Ruin Maniac's Cave. He'll issue a challenge to you - if you can collect all 26 alphabetical Unown, he'll tunnel into a hidden chamber inside Solaceon Ruins, allowing you to capture the remaining 2 Unown. You'll also find TM28 - Dig in this cave. Continue south and you'll reach the lakefront of Lake Valor.
Pastoria City is home to the Great Marsh, a Safari Zone of sorts where you pay a fee and have a limited amount of time to catch as many Pokemon as you can. The layout has been changed slightly from Diamond and Pearl, as well as some aesthetics, and HM05 - Defog has been shifted to Solaceon Ruins. Have a go at catching some Pokemon, and when you're done, head to the Gym. Your rival will show up and battle you. There have been a few sparse moveset changes to his team, but a marked level increase, since you fought him in Hearthome City.
Again, exploit the elemental weaknesses of his Pokemon and it should be a breeze. He'll run off, leaving you to enter Pastoria Gym. The layout hasn't changed since Diamond and Pearl, so the strategy remains the same: use the switches to raise or lower the water level so you can walk across the floating bridges. Create a path for yourself to get to Crasher Wake. - First of all, loop around to the left and hit the yellow switch by the Tuber to lower the water level - Head down the stairs and continue north. Ascend two flights of stairs and hit the green switch - Go down one flight of stairs and head to the west side. Hit the blue switch by the sailor - Cross south, ignore the yellow switch and the male Tuber and cross over by the female Tuber. Hit the green switch north of her, by the Fisherman - Head south down the flight of stairs and hit the yellow switch all the way south - Head north up and down the stairs, over to the other side of the gym, then up two flights of stairs. Hit the blue switch by the Fisherman - Cross the two floating bridges to get to Wake
When Wake is defeated, he'll give you the Fen Badge, which allows the use of HM03 - Surf outside of battle. You'll also get TM55 - Brine, which deals double damage if the enemy Pokemon is at half health or less.

Pastoria City is a fairly small, but significant city in Sinnoh, sandwiched between Route 213 to the east, Route 212 to the west, the coast to the south and the Great Marsh - the Sinnoh region's equivalent to the "Safari Zone" - to the north.
For this page we're going to detail the city itself - including the Gym, in the seciton below - while the following page will detail the Great Marsh , as it's a pretty big area!
As soon as you enter Pastoria City, you'll notice a very shifty Team Galactic Grunt nearby, who's talking about something rather sinster, setting of a package or bomb of some sort!
Around the rest of town, there's the Move Relearner in the house near the water in the south of town, who can allow your Pokémon to re-learn a move they've forgotten or which they would have learned at an earlier level, for the price of one Heart Scale.
In one of the houses there's a lady who'll give you a different berry each day. The kid with a net, in another house, will give you a Macho Brace (a useful item for EV training Pokémon) if you've caught all kinds of Burmy.
Aside from those things, you have two objectives here. First is to defeat the Gym, which we tackle below. The next is to explore the Great Marsh, and especially to pick up the TM for Defog from in there, which adds the app to your Pokétch - you'll need that for exploring specific routes soon after this!
After you've beaten the Gym, be sure to talk to that Grunt near the entrance to town as well, as that's what prompts your next objective...
Pastoria City Gym has a fairly complex-looking puzzle to it, which you'll need to solve if you want to reach, and ultimately defeat, the Gym Leader here, Crasher Wake.
We've mapped out the solution for you, so simply follow the steps below and you'll be in front of him in no time.
Pastoria Gym puzzle solution:
- Head left, battle Tuber Jacky, then stand on the Yellow button
- Then go down the steps next to him, ignore the green button, and go north through the shallow water until you reach Fisher Walter
- Press the Green button to the right of him
- Then work your way over to the left of the Gym to battle Sailor Damian
- Press the Blue button next to him
- Walk south, then go all the way east to Tuber Caitlyn
- Then go north to Fisher Erick
- Then stand on the Green button just north of him
- Go right then as far south as you can go, ignoring the pair of buttons on your left, to stand on the Orange button in the lower corner
- Then go back north and down the steps into the shallow water, working your way over to the north-west corner with Sailor Samson
- Stand on the Blue button next to him - you can now exit by going up to the Gym Leader Crasher Wake and around the sides of the room, to go heal, or just take him on right away!
Trainers and Opponents
When it comes to battling Crasher Wake, the first thing to look out for is Ice Fang on his Gyarados, which will cause you some issues if you decided to go for a Grass-type here against his Water-type team. You're better off opening with Electric-types like Luxray or Electabuzz!
Floatzel also has Ice Fang, while Quagsire is immune to Electric attacks, which means this when you'll want to swap in that Grass-type (or at least a Pokémon with a Grass-type attack) to deal with it.
Otherwise, it's hopefully not the most challenging battle in the world, as Wake's Pokmon are all the same sort of level as your last Gym battle in Veilstone City.
Once you've defeated him, head outside to heal up - you'll now be able to use the Defog Hidden Move in the wild once you have the app for your Pokétch!
This is where you have a few more objectives ahead of you before you can properly progress. First, head to the Great Marsh and make sure you at least get the Defog TM in there - more details on our specific Great Marsh explainer page!
After you've both won at the Gym and acquired the Defog hidden move, talk to that weird Team Galactic Grunt in the north of town by the exit. He'll run off eastwards, back through Route 213. You'll need to chase him, speaking to him several times: first on Route 213, then at the Hotel Grand Lake, then finally at Valor Lakefront.
Before you leave, Barry will also turn up and battle you!
Once you've defeated Barry and chased the Grunt - and defeated the Grunt too - Cynthia will show up. She'll be at Valor Lakefront talking to the scientists who are guarding the entrance. Speak to her, and she gives you something called the Secret Medicine - it'll get rid of those Psyduck that are blocking the route north way back towards the start of Route 210, from Solaceon Town!
You now have two options: you can use Fly from the Pokétch or Town Map, to go directly to Route 210 (via Veilstone City). Or, you can take the scenic route, literally, by flying or biking it back to Pastoria, and heading west from there on foot via the very long Route 212 and Pokémon Mansion, which eventually leads you to Hearthome City. It's your choice!
Either way, Hearthome City's Gym Leader still isn't there, so Route 210 North, past the Psyduck, is ultimately your next destination!

Sinnoh Safari Zone
A positional vantage point of Sinnoh Safari Zone in Sinnoh.
Sinnoh Safari Zone is the Sinnoh Safari Zone, located north of Pastoria City .
Once inside the Sinnoh Safari Zone, it is divided into 6 zones in a 2x3 pattern. The south-west zone, called Zone 1 has a Security Guard in its eastern side that can be spoken to if the player wishes to leave the Safari Zone earlier than the 20 minutes allowed.
The wild Pokémons of each zone are fairly similar. As such, which zone to hunt in depends mostly on which rare Pokémon the player is aiming for.
It is to note that HM07 ( Waterfall ) can be found in Zone 4, its center-west zone, if the player has not previously picked it up in Cave of Origin . Unlike in Hoenn , Waterfall is mandatory for reaching Sinnoh Victory Road .

Safari Zone
A Safari Zone (Japanese: サファリゾーン Safari Zone ) is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can enter and participate in the Safari Game (Japanese: サファリゲーム Safari Game ) to catch rare wild Pokémon .
Safari Zones can be found in the following regions :
- The Safari Zone in Kanto , located north of Fuchsia City .
- The Safari Zone in Johto , located north of Route 48 beyond the Safari Zone Gate in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver .
- The Safari Zone in Hoenn , located north of Route 121 .
- The Great Marsh in Sinnoh , located north of Pastoria City .

In the games
The mechanics of the Safari Zones are similar to each other. Most have a $ 500 entry fee, a step limit, a series of distinct areas with different wild Pokémon in each, and 30 Safari Balls , with which players may catch the Pokémon they come upon. The most important of their specific mechanics, however, is that Trainers do not initiate Pokémon battles with the wild Pokémon, but instead must catch them without battling them. The wild Pokémon within Safari Zones are capable of fleeing at any given time.
Differences between games
- The Johto Safari Zone has no step limit.
- In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the Hoenn Safari Zone does not use typical Safari Zone mechanics, instead functioning like normal routes .
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! effectively do not have a Safari Zone; the area that used to be the Safari Zone is replaced with GO Park , while the zoo area in front is referred to as the "Safari Zone" instead.
Similar examples
- Johto 's National Park is somewhat similar to a Safari Zone, being a nature preserve for Pokémon and having a thrice-weekly Bug-Catching Contest which shares several aspects with a Safari Game.
- Kalos 's Friend Safari area, located in Kiloude City , also bears some similarities with Safari Zones, differing in the available wild Pokémon (which are dependent on the Nintendo 3DS Friend Codes of other players) as well as allowing Poké Balls of any variety as opposed to solely Safari Balls.
- The Pal Park in all Generation IV games bears some superficial similarities to a Safari Zone, being a special area where only a specific type of Poké Ball can be used, featuring possible Pokémon species that otherwise cannot be found, and where the player cannot battle the Pokémon found there. Additionally, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver , the Pal Park is placed in Fuchsia City where it replaces the Safari Zone.
- In Hisui , the Safari Zone was not yet established, but the main gameplay of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is similar to the Safari Zone.
Unova , Alola , Galar , Paldea , and Kitakami have neither a Safari Zone nor anything similar to or resembling a Safari Zone.
- In the Generation II games, there is some data for a beta Safari Zone in Fuchsia City , but it was ultimately unused.
