Billabong Surf Trip for iPhone

With the colder winter months fast-approaching, most of us are bidding our beach days adieu until next June. Luckily, you don’t have to lock up your surf skills just yet. With Chillingo ’s new surf action game Billabong Surf Trip , iPhone users can ride the tube, go toes on the nose, and even weather the occasional wipe out.

After going through the initial setup steps of Billabong Surf Trip (choosing and customizing the appearance of a surfer), players are introduced to the four professional surfers of the Billabong Team, who serve as mentors in the game. The levels take place in various surfing hotspots all over the world. At the start of each level, trivia about the location and the surf is listed at the bottom of the screen. From there, one of the Billabong Teammates lay out the maneuvers that must be completed to pass that round.

The graphics are well rendered, and playing the game is reminiscent of actually being far offshore, immersed in the surf. The movements of the ocean are realistic, and even as players are performing less demanding tasks like paddling towards waves, the steady rise and fall of the tide is ever-present. The surfer animation is fine; each of the customizable faces looked exactly the same to me, but my surfer girl moved around athletically enough. At the end of each ride, enthusiastic beachgoers can be heard cheering (although, to be honest, they’re easily impressed— it doesn’t take much to get the crowd oohing and ahhing). Billabong Surf Trip often feels more like a surf video than a sports game. Underwater views are common, and each time the surfer catches a wave, his or her pop up is in slow motion, and the viewpoint whips around to another angle. The result is a game that seems like just as much entertainment as it is competition.

Within the game, there are eighteen real-life surfing tricks that can be performed by combining different patterns of movement on the left and right analog sticks. The maneuvers are not terribly difficult; I found timing to be the trickiest part of landing a trick. To pass each level, the manuevers must be completed within a given time limit. Any additional tricks completed will up your score, earning you more mondo points (which can be used as currency for a new board or swimsuit). If you want to take a break and enjoy the electronic surf without time constraints, you can also play in Surf Spots mode, where players have the opportunity to practice maneuvers in Free Play.

Billabong Surf Trip is everything a sports game should be: well made, compelling, and challenging. However, the element that’s really going to leave those who purchase it (for $2.99 in the App Store) satisfied is the embodiment of contemporary surf culture that it manages to create. From the chill vibe of the rock soundtrack to the feeling of Zen that comes with floating on a board waiting for the next wave to rise, Billabong Surf Trip ultimately provides a realistic, enjoyable surfing experience.

Billabong Surf Trip's gameplay doesn't live up to the unique and realistic surfing simulation it's paired with, making this a hard game to master and wasting its true potential as a fun sports title.

For some, the sun, the beach and surfing are practically a way of life; something I'm quite acquainted with living a mere handful of blocks from the home of the international clothing company 'Billabong'. Billabong Surf Trip by Chillingo tries to realistically capture the thrill and challenge of riding a wave while performing tricks to score points as you make your way on a world-wide tour of some of the best beaches you could visit.

To do this you'll need to master Surf Trip's rather eclectic control system, choosing either to maneuver via sticks only or a combination of tilting and sticks. Both systems don't feel entirely solid, but this has more to do with the simulation of surfing itself, with the tilt based controls not feeling particularly sharp or fluid, while the stick controls seem random in their success at pulling off tricks.

Pulling off tricks requires timing and positioning of your surfer along with specific stick movements to generate the move. This would work well if you weren't also at the mercy of a rather large and/or powerful wave that has plans of its own. Those familiar with surfing may find the balance easier to locate, but it has the air of randomness that doesn't sit well when you're trying to complete specific maneuvers to unlock new locations.

The game itself is littered with Billabong branding including unlockable clothing for your surfer and the beach locations are recognizable, if a bit washed out (if you'll excuse the pun), but this is all about the surfing and sadly Billabong Surf Trip just doesn't feel up to the challenge. An interesting alternative title, but not an exciting one at all.

London, UK., – September 7, 2010 – Leading downloadable games publisher, Chillingo, today announced a licensing agreement with developer Biodroid to publish Billabong Surf Trip, an arcade-simulation surfing game for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Set throughout the world’s best surfing destinations, the game uses Billabong’s top professional surfers Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson and Tiago Pires as ambassadors for the game, who share helpful tips on how to rip and get tubed on waves for maximum performance.

Miami Dolphins star Raheem Mostert is opening up on his decision to chase touchdowns over big waves ... telling TMZ Sports he left his pro surfing dreams behind to pursue a college education!!

For those who don't know, the NFL's rushing-scoring leader last season was a beast on the board back in the day ... in fact, he even had a sponsorship offer from Billabong when he was in his mid-teens.

We caught up with Mostert at LAX this week about his first love ... and he said while he misses the sport, he knows he made the right decision by putting his focus on football.

"I just wanted to be the first to graduate in my family," Mostert told us. "That's why I went to Purdue, to get a degree."

Mostert -- who grew up in New Smyrna Beach, Florida -- said he was able to get out in the water a bit when he was in Hawaii for teammate Tua Tagovailoa 's charity event recently ... but as far as going pro after retiring from football, the 32-year-old said he's got other things in the works.

"I gotta hang that up. I got other endeavors I want to go into. Surfing's always going to be my background, man."
