Victoria Falls & Serengeti Overland: Lakes & Landos
Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness
Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.
Kenya Wildlife Safari
All was well. Highlight was the guide, chef and driver team
8 days: Best of Zambia, Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Hwange) Wildlife Safari Tour
The trip delivers what the title promises. The best of three countries in one package. Mark and his team took great care of their guests at all times and, together with their local partners, ensured a smooth vacation. In particular, the rhino safari in Zambia and the Chobe National Park in Botswana are a fantastic experience. Just like being able to see the Victoria Falls from both sides. The logistics of the numerous border crossings are fully supported and can therefore be completed without any worries (with appropriate preparation, depending on nationality). In my opinion, there is only room for improvement in the accommodation in Zimbabwe. The chosen lodge is in a solid condition, but the rooms (sanitary facilities, no air conditioning) show the passing decades. The food, on the other hand, is excellent and sumptuous! Despite the small drawback, an absolutely recommendable trip to experience the highlights of the three countries!

14-day Kruger to the Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)
Overall this tour was amazing! There are some incredible game drives and fun places to say. A few of the excursions are a bit mediocre and the days on the bus can be very long. It was 100% worth it though. I had a once in a lifetime adventure and will never forget this trip.

The Absolute Safari
What an absolute adventure 77 days from Kenya to South Africa! Safaris, lakes, lions, beaches, historical sites, village visits, camping, long drives with windows down, gorillas, family style cooking, washing dishes, early mornings, hippos, boat safaris, peeing on the side of the road, cold showers, card games, photos, are some of the words that instantly come to mind from thinking about the last 3 months. Memories for a lifetime. Originally I was booked from just Nairobi to Zanzibar and I’m so glad I ended up extending all the way to South Africa! Our group was on the larger side as it was during the busy season July-Oct and we had about 20-25 people on the bus during the 3 months. The amount of people can vary as there are smaller sections of the absolute overland trips where people will be with you for different legs of the trip. (Ex: some people started and finished Zanzibar or started Vic Falls to Cape town, etc.) The best thing I can write for a review would be a recommendation for those wanting to go on the trip. To have an enjoyable trip is all about having the right expectations & mindset as these overland trips are definitely not for everyone. After the 3 months I believe I met around 40 different people on the safari who had stayed for a section or the whole safari and I could tell that most absolutely loved the overland trip, however, there were a few people that struggled as they did not have the right expectations. As I already mentioned, flexibility is key for this trip. I believe they make this very clear on their website but somehow some people still show up with a very rigid mindset. Some days go as planned, some days go better, and some go worse. But that is all part of the African experience. People on these trips are from all different backgrounds, with different personalities, work ethics, and ways of doing things. Just roll with it and it will be an amazing time. FOOD. Family style & simple. Please be flexible. You must remember that if there is a group of 20-25 everyone has to be catered to for their dietary needs. Most lunches you are on your own. There will be a supermarket stop and you can get as you wish. But for dinner there will be a cooking team for that specific night so depending on the dietary restrictions there might have to be 3 different meals if you have vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters. So I would definitely recommend being flexible when it comes to preferences. I wouldn’t recommend this trip for strict dietary restrictions (vegetarian ok but vegan, etc. not so much). Remember you are in Africa and there are weeks where the food options and supermarkets are limited. Staff. We had an amazing guide Peter for the 77 days and 1 driver for the first 3/4 of the trip and then last 1/4 a different driver. Our guide and both drivers were from different parts of Africa and all had 15+ years experience doing these tours. They are all very knowledgable & such helpful resources. They all speak multiple languages and handled the borders crossings and logistics very professionally. At times things were a bit up in the air but like I said it is the nature of Africa as things change very frequently. They are the first people you see up in the morning and last people to bed making sure everything is in order. Our guide did a really good job at balancing all the different preferences of food, itinerary, etc. We had some unique characters in our group which made it pretty difficult for him to handle but he did a great job at balancing it for everyone. A great sense of humor, always had a positive outlook, and always enjoyed telling us the history of local areas. Truck. There are several trucks with some being newer and some being older. Our first truck Kifaru was a bit older, could use some cosmetic repair on the interior but worked like a charm. The seats were comfy and there were plenty of outlets to charge electronics. The fridge wasn’t ideal as it was smaller especially after the group food was in put in but did all was needed. Good variety of 8 seats facing backwards with tables & 20 seats facing forwards. Money. This is by far the most budget friendly overland tour I saw when doing research. Plan to spend more than you think though. You can do this trip with just doing the minimums but when everyone is going on an extra safari or an extra activity, you are going to want to do it as well. Easy to say you won’t do something at home but different story when you are there. Maintain a positive attitude & energy. Although you don’t need to be “physically fit” this trip is demanding especially if you are doing the 77 days. There aren’t any necessary physically fit needs, but there are many early wake up calls, tearing down & setting up your tent everyday, and some nights you will be on cooking / cleaning duty, etc. It all adds up and you’re constantly on the move for months. That is all part of the adventure. You are going to meet tons of different people so you can imagine positive attitude is key. Some may look at how busy it is and see it as a negative but you can also see how some of those things also are a highlight of the trip for others. All about the outlook. If you want a vacation to sit and chill on the beach this isn’t the trip for you. If you are ready to have an adventure of a lifetime and one of the most unique experiences traveling on an overland truck through Africa with people from all around the world, you won’t be disappointed. Best advice have a flexible and positive outlook and you will have a great time! So glad I did it! Hindsight I would 100% recommend Absolute Africa especially knowing what I know now. Rushing down to South Africa or rushing the itinerary like some of the other tour companies isn’t something I wanted to do & I am glad I chose AA. Unforgettable memories! Hope that helps!

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)
With much sadness we have just finished our 12 day Delta Chobe Waterways tour in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The trip was our belated honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a better option. The places we visited and people we met were fascinating, beautiful, friendly and unforgetable. The constant throughout our trip however was our wonderful guide Simon Tawanira. From the very start he was welcoming, helpful and made the trip entirely worry-free. He generously shared so much information about the countries we visited and animals we were fortunate enough to see. We shared many stories and laughs. We will very much miss our fabulous guide and are a little concerned about how we will organise ourselves without him! This was always going to be an amazing trip but Simon made it truly memorable. Any one lucky enough to book a trip with him with have a fantastic time and learn so much. Thank you.
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days
Amazing experience with a fantastic guide and great safari company. Our experience with Serengeti Adrian tours couldn't have been easier and we felt very lucky to have our guide, Abu. Abu is very knowledgeable, experienced, and an excellent spotter of wildlife. Because of Abu and his spirited drive, we were able to see all of the big 5 and many other wonderful animals. The itinerary itself was packed and gave us an opportunity to enjoy all of the different excursions in Tanzania without having to worry about the logistics. All of the places we stayed at that were selected by Serengeti African tours were wonderful with great staff themselves. In the lead up to the trip, Lucas, Safina were extremely responsive and made sure all the arrangements were correct in planning the right vacation for us.

6 Days Kenya Budget Tours (with FREE NIGHT at Nairobi Hotel)
I was so astonished by watching wildlife on a 6-day budget safari in Masai Mara! The guys from Bon Voyage Kenya Safaris organized the safari perfectly. The driver guide Charles, and Mr. Omondi our safari planner gave us clear instructions before safari begun, told lots of interesting facts about animal's, and let us enjoy game drives. Thanks for this unforgettable life experience!
10 Days - Okavango Delta Tour, Chobe National Park (Botswana) , Livingstone (Zambia) and Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe) wildlife-focused safari
16 Days of Intensive Adventurous Safari through Magical Uganda and Rwanda ( Private tour)
Just returned from a magnificent tour of Uganda. We went with Mukisa Safaris, Richard went to so much trouble to make sure we got to see and do everything we wanted. Our guide Hami, and John our driver were outstanding. Uganda is the real Africa, stunning scenery, mountains, rain forests, lakes, rivers and of course wild animals. Go soon, before it changes.
African Safari Tour Reviews
East Africa is a bucket-list trip and did not disappoint. We saw the big 5 and so much more. Our guide, Zach, our chef and driver were professionals and dealt with any and all issues without having them affect the trip.
Everything was Amazing
We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .
The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.
We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.
We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can you go on a safari in africa.
Some of the most popular national parks for safaris include Kruger in South Africa , Masai Mara in Kenya , and the Serengeti in Tanzania . However, there are so many other incredible parks to visit in Africa. We can help you decide the right parks for you depending on what you’re looking for. For example, Madikwe and the Eastern Cape in South Africa are great for families. The Sabi Sands Conservancy in Greater Kruger National Park is ideal for those seeking ultra-luxury. Kenya and Tanzania offer an abundance of wildlife roaming across the African plains. Zimbabwe , Zambia and Botswana are also remarkable safari destinations, with Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River as additional highlights. Rwanda , Uganda , and Namibia will all provide different safari experiences, perfect for return travellers to Africa.
Is Kenya or South Africa better for safaris?
Both destinations offer different experiences, wildlife, and types of safaris. South Africa is recommended for families due to its malaria-free game reserves and exceptional food. You can also combine your safari with a visit to a beach, city and wineries. You’re likely to see more wildlife in Kenya. In Kenya, you’ll probably visit more than one national park and see a greater variety of landscapes and animals. Plus, you can combine your safari with a beach stay in Mombasa, Lamu, or Watamu.
Which African country has the best safaris?
This is an impossible question to answer! Each and every safari is completely unique. What you see also depends on your own personal experience and luck. We can guarantee that once you’ve been on a safari, it will remain one of your best holidays. Call our destination experts to discuss which country best suits your holiday dreams.
How many days do you need for a safari?
Anything from 2 nights to 14 nights or longer. We suggest a minimum of 2 nights, as this means you have one full day at the lodge. This allows you at least two safaris (morning and afternoon), the chance to have a spa treatment, relax by the pool, go on a walking safari, and admire the natural surroundings of the African bush. If you’re a wildlife aficionado or an eager photographer, the longer, the better.
Where can I see the Big Five on safari?
For a chance to track the Big Five on a safari, head to South Africa , Kenya , Tanzania , Botswana or Namibia . You can see all five animals — the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros — in each of these destinations, although they may be spread across several parks.
Can I take my family on safari?
A family safari is an unforgettable adventure, and we highly recommend it. That said, certain game lodges have age restrictions for children, and some safaris set a minimum age for safety reasons. Talk to our Destination Specialists to find the best family safari for you.
Are African safaris dangerous?
There is an element of danger in any safari as you are in wild terrain surrounded by wildlife. However, the lodges we select and the partners we work with ensure safety is at the forefront of their day-to-day duties, so you should not be concerned.
How do I book a safari holiday with Hayes & Jarvis?
You can book your safari holidays for 2023-2024 with Hayes & Jarvis by:
- Calling us at 020 8106 2403
- Scheduling a callback
- Or by writing to us
How much does an African safari holiday cost?
Our expert-curated African safari holidays start at £2,499 per person.
Which is the best month to go on an Africa safari holiday?
The dry months from June to October and January to March are normally the best and most recommended months to go on African safari holidays. However, there might be variations depending on the wildlife parks you pick and the experiences you are looking to have. It is best to speak to our Africa experts for more destination-specific information.
How many days are enough for a safari holiday?
You will need at least two nights to experience the main highlights of your safari holidays. This is so that you can head out on at least two safari drives and have a good chance of spotting Africa’s Big Five and other wildlife. This also gives you enough time to sign up for guided nature walks, spa sessions, and other activities.
What equipment or clothing should I pack for a safari holiday?
While on a safari drive, long-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, and full-length cargo pants in muted or camouflage colours work best. Early mornings and evenings can get quite chilly during winter, so wear a warm jacket. Sun hats, sunglasses, and sunblock are essential for your time in the sun. Depending on your interests, we also recommend carrying binoculars and photography gear.
Which destination in Africa offers the best safari experience?
No two African destinations are alike, and each offers something special and unique:
- South Africa
Is Masai Mara better than the Serengeti?
The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are both extraordinary African safari holiday destinations. Kenya is a more well-established safari destination with a wider choice of hotels and easier access to game parks. As a result, it is the more popular pick. The Masai Mara is a smaller area with higher wildlife density, so it’s easier to spot animals.
The Serengeti is much larger than the Mara, and the wildlife is spread out over a larger geographical region. While you can witness the Great Migration at both destinations, you can experience it across a much longer window in the Serengeti.

African safari holidays
A safari is the feeling you get when hearing your first lion roar echoing across the plains. It’s coming across animals you’ve never set eyes on before, and wildlife you’ve always wanted to see. And, it’s sitting out around the campfire at night, sharing your day’s experiences beneath a sky glittering with constellations.
Whether it’s your first safari or the mark of a return to Africa , our safari specialists will use their deep-seated connections with the continent to plan a trip that captures everything you’re looking for. We can arrange experiences that show you the bush in a new light, from walking safaris that focus on the wider ecosystem to boat trips that get you close to elephant, hippo and birdlife.
And, a big part of a safari is about where you stay. We work with the best camps and lodges across Africa, from simple tented camps to opulent lodges with the height of facilities, dining and service.

Getting around
The Kruger National Park is approx a 5-6 hour drive from Johannesburg. The area is quite vast but depending on which lodge you stay in we recommend flying into either Skukuza or Hoedspruit airports where you can drive or be transferred to your lodge.
Highlights of Kruger National Park and surrounds
Everybody should go on a safari at least once in their life, and where better than South Africa's world-famous Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape, rich in wildlife and home to the Big Five.
One of Africa’s biggest game reserves, Kruger is home not only to the Big Five (FYI, that’s lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos), but hundreds of other mammals and birds, too. For wildlife, Kruger National Park is pretty much unparallelled. Not only that, rolling savannah and distant mountains make for the safari setting of dreams.
Want to experience safari without skimping on luxury? You’re in luck. Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape is famous not only for its vast and diverse variety of flora and fauna, but also for its luxury safari lodges, so you get the best of both worlds.
Here’s how to make the most out of your Kruger safari trip:
Kruger safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around the National Park by sunset or sunrise. Spot the Big Five before the rest of the world wakes up, as well as cheetahs, wild dogs, antelopes, honey-badgers, bush babies and up to 350 bird species.
For a different safari experience altogether, how about walking Kruger safari tours with expert field guides and trackers? There’s nothing quite like it for feeling close to the action and at one with the wildlife.
If you’re feeling fancy, take a helicopter flight across the bushveld and over the Blyde River Canyon. The views will take your breath away, and the ride itself is a thrill. You might even be lucky enough to spot a herd of elephants from way up in the sky, where you’ll be able to watch the magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Enjoy phenomenal stargazing – some of the best in South Africa – from Jock Safari Lodge , where you can even choose to sleep out on your riverside sala for the best outdoorsy experience.
Planning on taking the kids? They’re in for a treat! Drop them off at Ulusaba Rock Lodges's ‘Cub’s Club’ for mini rangers’ courses, safari goodies and activities which will inspire even the most apprehensive of little ones. Kruger National Park holidays are truly the best for individuals and groups of all kinds, including families of all sizes and ages.
Many of the lodges celebrate the local Shangaan culture with traditional singing and dancing after dinner or around the BOMA by night, a beautiful and harmonious treat for everyone.
Often when you think of safari holidays, you think of basic lodges and tents. But that’s not how we do safaris at Virgin Holidays, oh no! We’re all about treating you to a bit of luxury, no matter your destination.
Safaris in the Kruger Park safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around one of the lodge’s private concessions. Choose a lodge in the Sabi Sands reserve and you will be able to skip the crowds and search for wildlife in your very own piece of paradise, with less vehicles and the ability to do night-drives, you really will feel spoilt. Book the exclusive Cliff Lodge at Ulusaba for jaw-dropping views and a private pool, as well as world-class service, or sleep under the stars in the oh-so-exclusive Chalkley’s Treehouse at Lion Sands . Kick back with a cocktail at the Motswari Private Game Reserve , which looks onto a watering hole, and watch animals come and go as you sip.
Special occasion? Celebrate your honeymoon with romantic private dining under the African skies and enjoy a hot stone massage using Africology products at the Aroma Boma Spa, Ulusaba.
Sounds just a little bit better than you were expecting, hey?
Foodies, rejoice: you’ll get to taste some delicious local food as part of your Kruger safari packages:
- After an early start spotting the Big Five, a post-safari breakfast will be extremely welcome. How does poaches eggs on a Boerewors patty, a specialist sausage, sound? Thought so.
- Lunch is served followed by high tea before afternoon game-drive then it is time for the best bit, sundowners. Enjoy stretching your legs in the park where your ranger will select a gorgeous spot for you to enjoy some traditional South African snacks with a cool cocktail or some fine local wine.
- Feast on Kudu burgers from a Braai , a traditional African BBQ – super succulent and so tasty you’ll want seconds, and maybe thirds. Even better, enjoy your dinner around the BOMA, with breathtaking views across the plains – the perfect sunset dining experience.
- As for drink, South Africa is, of course, famous for its vineyards, which means one thing and one thing only: wine. And good wine, at that. Try Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and other new world wines from local vineyards. What a way to wind down at the lodge after a day of wildlife-spotting!
It’s high time you booked yourself and your family or loved ones onto that safari trip you’ve been talking about for years, huh?
Let’s get this show on the road: browse our Kruger National Park hotels and lodges right now, this minute, and you’ll soon be hanging out with (okay, near) lions in the African bush.

Specialising in small group Kruger safaris, expect an all-round personalised, tailor-made and truly South African experience when you travel with us.
The Ultimate Where-To-Stay Guide To The Kruger National Park
As the oldest and possibly most frequented conservation reserve in all of Africa, the Kruger National Park has earned its place in countless “must-visit” articles, bucket lists and top destination guides.
Although it has a rich history and a myriad of stories springing up from folklore and ancient tales, the biggest pull for guests planning the ultimate safari trip is the diverse animal species which roam an area roughly the size of Israel. Almost a million guests will travel the Park’s extensive network of tar and gravel roads each year, and along the way, will see all sorts of animals, including the famous Big 5.
Situated neatly in the north-eastern corner of South Africa, the Kruger has over the years spread out over two of the country’s provinces, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, and it shares a border with both Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
While in the Park, you can experience traditional African safaris, guided walks on wilderness trails, enjoy the thrill of a 4x4 trip, try out your skills with a photographic safari, and spend some quiet time sitting in a bird hide.
It is safe to say that there is more to see and do here than you could imagine so planning what you hope to see, how you plan to see it, and most importantly where in the Park you will be staying, is all part of ensuring you have the best possible trip.
Types of Kruger National Park Accommodation
Guests are in for a treat when they book a stay in the Park. The multitude of accommodation options means there is something for everyone to choose from, regardless of their budget. From the upper end 5-star accommodation to the rather rustic and far more affordable camping options, guests will need to plan appropriately to ensure they have the accommodation they want.
Each of the Park’s main rest camps is likely to have this accommodation, although it can vary from camp to camp.
Camping Facilities
So, planning and researching the camp is key.
Authentic and rustic, the huts found in the Park are designed with comfort and affordability in mind. Most of the more basic huts have only one room, making them perfect for couples although others have a sleeper couch and thus, accommodate more than 2 people.
The huts have no kitchens or ablution facilities, so guests have to rely on the camps communal facilities.
Consider these a step up from the camp hut. Bungalows can have more than one bedroom and their own bathroom, although depending on the camp, bathrooms might be absent in which case guests must make use of the communal ablution facilities.
When selecting a bungalow, guests might be able to choose their view, and the view can affect the price.
The cottage is ideal for anyone wanting more space during their stay. A basic cottage generally has a single bedroom along with some living space, a bathroom and a kitchen. Visiting families, couples and singles will be more than comfortable in a cottage.
Family Cottage
For larger groups requiring more sleeping and living space, the family cottage might be what you are looking for. The family cottage has between 2 to 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. And as mentioned, there is also some living space.
Guest Cottage
Slightly bigger than the family cottage, and with more sleeping space, this style of cottage is quite spacious and along with having between 3 and 4 bedrooms, they generally also have 2 bathrooms. A guest cottage will also have its own kitted out kitchen and living area, as well as a braai area and a stoep (veranda).
Luxury Lodges
For those travellers who’d like to experience a more exclusive and private stay, the luxury lodge is a perfect choice. These lodges are owned by either SANParks or they are owned privately. The lodges boast 3, 4 and even 5 star ratings; most include meals and some include safari game drives.
On a side note, most of the camps in the park are completely self-catering which means guests need to cater for their own meals unless they make use of a camp restaurant or café (if these are available). Just about all of the camps will have a braai area included as a part of the accommodation.
It is also important to keep in mind that all accommodation, apart from the luxury lodges, is going to be rather rustic as the Park likes to stay true to its authentic beginnings.
Kruger National Park Rest Camps
Although the Park started out with only two rest camps, Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, today, guests can choose from 12 rest camps as well as several other private camps, bush camps, overnight hides and luxury lodges.
The camps offer guests all sorts of accommodation which ranges from rustic camping, basic huts and comfortable bungalows to spacious guest houses and cottages, and private lodges.
Whatever your taste, the Park accommodates everyone who visits.
Letaba Rest Camp
Overlooking the Letaba River, which is renowned for its elephant population, Letaba Rest Camp is popular for being one of the Park's most scenic camps. The surrounding area offers spectacular wildlife sightings and the accommodation at the camp includes camping and a caravan site, bungalows, guest houses, and safari tents.
This camp is situated at around the halfway point in the Park and the quickest way to get to the camp is to travel through Phalaborwa Gate.
Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp
Another camp situated close to a river, Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp is a game-rich camp, popular for its immense wildlife populations which are often spotted coming to the river for a drink. The camp is far from being the biggest in the Park, however, this is certainly a part of the appeal.
Guests can look forward to staying in the bungalows or at one of the two guesthouses, and for those who want a more affordable or perhaps a more rustic experience, there is a camping/caravan site as well.
Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp
One of the Parks newest camps, Berg-en-Dal is often referred to as the most modern camp in the Park, and one offering exceptional accommodation. Built within the southern section of the park, about 12kms away from Malelane Gate, Berg-en-Dal is one of the Kruger's hillside camps.
There is tree-shaded camping, family cottages, guesthouses and a few one-bedroom huts to stay in.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp
Close to the Mozambique border, on the banks of the Sabie River, lies the Lower Sabie Rest Camp. Popular for its beautiful green lawns and dense trees, this camp is ideal for wildlife watching, as numerous animals frequent the river throughout the day.
Like many of the other camps in the Park, Lower Sabie offers guests camping facilities, snug bungalows, chalets ideal for families, and luxury guesthouses.
Orpen Rest Camp
This camp is located on the western border of the Park and offers guests a sense of privacy. The camp has exquisite flowers local to the area, large trees providing much needed cool shade, and a range of accommodation types.
Orpen is a little smaller than the other camps in the park but it offers huts, family-sized units, and luxury guest houses for visitors to enjoy. The camp also has some of the best views.
Mopani Rest Camp
Within a grove of Mopani trees surrounded by small hills, Mopani Rest Camp has an array of comfortable accommodation options as well as a stunning natural rock pool and a wilderness trail. Another perk is that guests can book guided day and night tours, in the company of an official park guide, while staying at Mopani.
Some of the accommodation options include bungalows, guest cottages and guesthouses, perfect for larger groups.
Pretoriuskop Rest Camp
It is the oldest rest camp in the Park and, to this day, boasts historical accommodation. Pretoriuskop is one of the most popular camps in the Kruger, for several reasons. The camp has some of the most affordable accommodation, a fancy natural rock pool and is well-known for having wildlife, mostly antelope, come right into the camp to nibble on grass.
Guests can camp or stay in a caravan, book a bungalow, opt for a family chalet or enjoy a luxury guesthouse.
Punda Maria Rest Camp
Situated right at the top of the Kruger, in one of the hottest parts of the Park, Punda Maria is the ultimate destination for anyone wanting to travel the full length of the Kruger. It is a quiet camp, perfect for those looking for some solitude, and it has also become the ideal place for spotting all sorts of animals.
The rest camp has space for camping, several family chalets, and a few luxury guesthouses. Guests can enjoy some of the most beautiful views while staying at the camp.
Skukuza Rest Camp
This is the capital of the Kruger and has been named after the Park’s first warden and most influential figure - James Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp has been built on the banks of the Sabie River and its location means guests can enjoy exquisite wildlife views from the camp.
The accommodation available includes camping facilities, bungalows, guest cottages and guesthouses. The camp is also the main place for day visitors to grab a snack or enjoy a picnic, so if you plan to stay here, be prepared for a very busy setting.
Satara Rest Camp
The camp is renowned for its excellent game sightings, with lions often seen close to the camp, lured to the area by the massive plains game population.
Satara is set up in such a way that a stay here is a communal experience, where guests can socialise and share stories about what they have seen during the day. At the camp, guests can enjoy camping or a stay in a bungalow, guest cottages or guesthouses. There is something for everyone at Satara.
Shingwedzi Rest Camp
Another camp which has become quite popular for its game viewing, Shingwedzi is the perfect place for those who will be enjoying a long stay in the Park. Along with having dining facilities, a filling station and a Laundromat, guests can stay in tents, guesthouses and cottages, and bungalows.
Olifants Rest Camp
It is the one camp in which anyone wanting to see elephants should book a stay at. Olifants Rest Camp, overlooking the Olifants River, and is best known for its elephant populations. Guests can spend the whole day admiring the beautiful views and spotting plenty of game right from the camp.
When it comes to the accommodation options, camping, bungalows and guesthouses are available.
Other Camps in the Kruger
While the Park has 12 main rest camps, it also has an assortment of bush camps and satellite camps.
These camps are different in that they often offer a more private and more rustic experience, with many of the camps only offering one type of accommodation and completely lacking things like a filling station, reception area and a shop.
The other camps in the Park include:

7 Questions About African Safari Tours
Answered by
Harriet nimmo.
Why should I choose an African safari tour?
“There are so many reasons to choose an African safari. Going on safari is an unforgettable experience, offering a heady mix of adventure, thrilling wildlife sightings, cultural encounters and spectacular scenery. It is a chance to escape the fast pace of the modern world. You’ll retreat to a simpler, more peaceful way of life, reconnecting with the daily rhythms of nature. For me, the wildlife sightings provide the adrenaline that keeps me coming back, time and time again. Who can ever forget their first sighting of an elephant in the wild or realizing just how tall a giraffe really is? And there is something so primeval when hearing the roar of a lion under a glittering night sky. Finally, going on safari can help protect Africa’s wild animals and wild places. The more paying visitors, the more local people are employed and the more incentive there is to protect Africa’s natural wonders.”
Which are the best African countries for going on safari?
“All the classic safari countries make wonderful destinations for African safari tours. These countries are Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. Which country you choose may depend on whether you’d like to combine your safari with another activity. For example you may like to add some beaches and/or Zanzibar in East Africa. Or perhaps Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe, or fine dining around Cape Town and the winelands of South Africa. If this is your first safari, South Africa makes a good option. The private reserves bordering Kruger National Park can almost guarantee sightings of the Big Five. South Africa also has good infrastructure and excellent levels of service. However, you will not get the sweeping savannahs and ‘Out of Africa’ scenes here. For these you need to travel to Kenya or Tanzania. Of course, these two countries also offer the incredible wildebeest migration. Note though, you need to travel here at the right time of year to see this. Zambia and Zimbabwe should also be considered. They have stunning national parks, including South Luangwa and Hwange respectively. Both countries are slightly more off the beaten track with less mass tourism. Botswana perhaps feels the wildest of the safari countries, although this comes with a price.”
What time of year is best for going on a safari?
“The best time of year, and the peak season, for most safaris is the Dry season. This is when the bush is less dense, and the wildlife is drawn to waterholes. Generally the wildlife is easier to find and see at this time. The Dry season means bright sunny days, and cooler nights. Of course, as the Dry season is peak safari season, there are more travelers and prices are higher. Dry season generally falls from May/June to September/October. You may also wish to consider going during the ‘Green season’ (also known as the Wet season or Emerald season). Although it may rain, often the showers are short downpours and then the sun comes back out again. It can be much cheaper to travel then, the bush is lush and green, and this is the breeding season for many of the animals. In East Africa, there are two Green seasons – the long rains between March and May, and the short rains from approximately October to December. In southern Africa the Green season is approximately from November to March. Temperatures can get very hot. Note that when it is wet there are more bugs and a greater risk of malaria.”
What wildlife can I expect to see?
“When it comes to seeing wildlife while on safari, this is wild nature and nothing can be guaranteed. You may see plenty of animals, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). But there will be game drives when you don’t see very much at all. That will make the sightings you do see all the more special. The joy of safaris, and what makes them so addictive, is that you just never know what you might see around the next corner. If you listen closely to, and learn from your guide, you’ll be able to enjoy all aspects of Africa’s wildlife. Everything from baobab trees to dung beetle, to chameleon and cheeky mongoose. Don’t forget to also focus on the birds, as even a very quiet game drive usually delivers some great bird sightings.”
What does a typical day look like on safari?
“All African safari holidays run to the same typical timetable. The best times to see wildlife, particularly predators being active, is at the beginning and end of the day. These golden hours at dawn and dusk are also the best times for photography. So be prepared for very early starts! You will usually be woken at dawn, and given tea, coffee, rusks or cereal. The aim is to get going on your game drive as early as possible at first light. The morning game drive usually lasts three to four hours, including a coffee and comfort break. You return to your camp or lodge for brunch. Then you are free to relax and take a siesta, or perhaps lie by the pool, during the middle of the day. It’s a good idea to bring something to read for this down time. Later in the afternoon you will meet again for tea and snacks, before setting out on your second game drive of the day. This will usually include a stop for sundowner drinks, to watch the setting sun. The game drive then returns to your accommodation in the dark, using a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals. Evening meals are usually served just after returning to camp. In some countries night drives are offered after dinner at around 8pm. Such drives can be a unique opportunity to spot nocturnal (only active at night) wildlife such as genets. Unless you have paid for exclusive use, be prepared for sharing your game-drive vehicle with other guests. This can be huge fun (although sometimes you need to be quite tolerant). It is always a good idea to offer to swap around your seating positions during your safari. ”
How much will this safari cost?
“The costs of an African safari can vary enormously. You could pay anything from US$125 to US$1000 per person, per night. Sometimes considerably more. Safaris can be an expensive holiday, and you generally get what you pay for. At the budget end of the spectrum are African safari packages where you join organized tours, departing on set dates, with other groups of people. South Africa and Kenya offer some of the best value-for-money safaris. Your choice of accommodation will affect the cost of your safari. Mobile safaris, where you sleep in tents, are great for groups of friends or families traveling together. Some safari lodges have taken luxury to the extreme, with private plunge pools etc. That said, you will probably have the same wildlife-viewing experience as staying in a more rustic lodge. It’s a matter of deciding what features are most important to you. If your reserve or lodge is remote, getting there will also impact the price. To visit the Okavango Delta, in Botswana, you can only fly into the Delta. There are no road transfers, so this adds to the price of your trip. The Serengeti is accessible by road, but this is a long, bone-rattling journey. It’s much easier and more comfortable to take a quick trip in a small plane. Whatever the costs of your safari, if you’ve experienced good service, do tip generously. A few extra dollars or Euros will make a huge difference to your guide or lodge staff.”
What should I consider when choosing an African safari tour?
“There is a lot of considerations to be taken into account when choosing an African safari tour operator. These include: If you are traveling with children, choose a family-friendly tour or lodge. In addition, you may prefer to choose a safari in a malaria-free area, for example in parts of South Africa. What type of safari do you want to go on? There are organized tours, departing on set dates, joining other groups of people. Or do you want an exclusive, tailor-made safari just for you? Are you happy to camp or do you want to stay in a luxury lodge? Your budget will probably determine your choices. Do you want to combine your safari with beaches, South Africa’s winelands, or a trip to Victoria Falls? This will help determine which country to choose.”

Why masai mara game reserve safari some masai mara highlights to whet your appetite.
- The Mara, established in 1961, covers 1,510 km². It is home to all the members of the Big Five and over 470 species of birds all in their natural habitat.
- Masai Mara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kenya, and for good reason. Besides being home to incredible wildlife, there are also many world-class lodges in the area. These include Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp, Rekero Camp, Bateleur Camp, and Mara Plains Camp. These lodges offer luxurious accommodations, excellent service, and stunning views of the Masai Mara. Visitors may also opt to stay at a private conservancy.
- The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to a variety of group ranches, many of which offer tourists the chance to stay and experience life on the ranch. Maasai pastoral ranches offer a unique perspective into the Maasai culture. They provide visitors with an opportunity to observe traditional pastoral activities, such as cattle herding and goat-keeping. Guests can also enjoy horseback riding, nature walks, and game viewing during a trip to Mara.
- Masai Mara National Reserve is located in Narok and is under the administration of the Narok County Council. However, visitors desirous of witnessing more massive elephant herds could also visit the adjacent Amboseli National Park . Amboseli is located in Kajiado County, Kenya.
- The Mara River, which is key to the ecosystem of the reserve, is 395 km long. It is rich in crocodiles and is the epicenter for the dramatic river crossings during the great wildebeest migration .
- During the annual wildebeest migration, over two million wildebeest and other herbivores – including elands, Topi, zebras, and Thomson’s Gazelles – migrate from Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Mara. The massive movement is popularly known as The Great Wildebeest Migration.
- The great wildebeest migration is a natural phenomenon featuring the largest mass exodus of animals from Serengeti to Maasai Mara. The climax of the Masai Mara migration is the dramatic Mara river crossings. Maasai Mara migration is often labeled the Greatest Migration on earth. In 2007, it was voted one of the eight wonders of the world.
- The indigenous Maasai tribe and the abundant wildlife viewing opportunities have led to the reserve being named Africa’s Leading Park six times between 2013-2018.
- Award-winning BBC Television show, ‘Big Cat Diary’, which chronicles the lives of Africa’s Big Cats w a s filmed here.
- The Masai Mara is home to many big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
- The Maasai people for whom the park is named and the Maasai culture are part of the park’s legacy.
- The Maasai tribe consists of cattle herders and warriors who have won begrudging respect even from wild beasts, such as the African lion. Maasai people live in simple mud-and-wattle huts and subsist largely on milk, blood, and meat from their cattle. They are one of the few African tribes that have successfully resisted the encroachments of western civilization by maintaining the traditional Maasai culture .
- Thanks to extensive conservation efforts, the wildlife, and the Maasai tribe have achieved a peaceful coexistence. The peace also extends to the neighboring private conservancies with the population of animals in the greater Mara ecosystem enjoying a steady increase since 2000.
As far as safari destinations go, celebrities such as Sir Richard Branson and Bollywood sensations Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have been to and love the Masai Mara Reserve.
Things To Do in Masai Mara Reserve During the 2023 Seasons
There is an extensive list of things to do during a Maasai Mara national reserve safari in 2023. These include:
1. Day Game Drives in Masai Mara Reserve
With endless plains to explore and staggering wildlife to swoon over, game drives are the most popular way to explore the Mara.
What are game drives? You may ask.
A game drive is an adventurous expedition into national parks or reserves using a safari land cruiser or a safari van. The drives are typically two to three hours long and usually take place in the mornings, evenings, and, in some parts of the park, at night.
Morning game drives typically start at 6:00 A.M to 9:00 AM. Evening game drives in Maasai Mara begin from 3:00 P.M to 6:00 P.M. Why at that specific time?
The temperatures are milder, letting the wildlife roam freely and take advantage of the mild weather to either graze or hunt. Those that have perused our Masai Mara Safari Packages will notice that we tend to favor full-day game drives.
Our drives start at 6:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M with lunch breaks and snack breaks in between. Not to worry, if this seems a little tasking for you, our Masai Mara travel packages are custom-made and flexible to accommodate our customer’s varying needs.
Masai Mara Game Drive Cost
Depending on the camp, a Masai Mara safari Game Drive costs an average of GBP 550 per person sharing.
2. Hot Air Balloon Safari
A hot-air balloon safari introduces you to nature beyond belief, mesmeric explosions of colors, and the utmost luxury. Mara national reserve hot-air balloon safari lasts for an hour.
They have you cruise the African savannah at arms-throws away from grazing wildlife, meandering rivers and sceneries like no other. On board the balloon, you will see where the riverine forest of Maasai Mara meets Mara’s sweeping plains.
The balloon’s flying height can be adjusted to bring you closer to Maasai Mara’s big cats and other animals. The balloon can also fly you higher for excellent views of the landscape. No? Well, there’s something to anticipate.
On average, 12 miles of the Masai Mara Game Reserve are covered. Most Masai Mara hot air balloon safaris end with a delicious breakfast cooked slowly over the balloon’s burners.
Such extravagance must cost an arm and leg; they ask? No. A Masai Mara hot-air balloon safari costs an average of GBP 350 per person. We are not saying this is cheap. We are saying it’s one of Masai Mara highlights and worth every dime.
3. Bush Camping
Maasai Mara camping safaris are how you know magic isn’t an illusion after all. The activity not only brings you closer to the wild but also allows you an intimate, unrestricted experience of it.
Top-notch tented camps and campsites are available for our Masai Mara camping safaris, as well as the company of our best guides. Bring your best family tents, folding mattresses, utensils, and utilities with you, and we will take care of the rest.
However, camping is restricted to a few designated areas within the park and a security team of two rangers is allocated for each campsite. As an extra precautionary measure, you are advised to stay within the designated campsites.
Wake up to the sounds of the wild across the sweeping plains, sleep under the light of a thousand stars, and learn more than you thought possible about the plants and Masai Mara animals. Visitors staying at Kenya’s 5-star safari lodges can also enjoy stunning views of the Mara River from the lodge balcony.
4. Walking Safaris
It is one thing to take in the wild from the back of a safari jeep or safari land cruiser and a whole other thing to go on nature walks or ride a horse through the vast savannah of the Mara. Nature walks provide exhilarating ways to explore the savannah. They arouse your senses, give you a chance to interact with the local communities, and make your wilderness experience more authentic.
Masai Mara safari bush walks are categorized into two; bush walks within the park’s confines and walks outside the central park. The latter lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour while the former can take two to three hours. A packed lunch is served for walks outside the park.
During nature walks in the Mara, finer details of the Maasai Mara are shared. You also get to meet Masai warriors, Mara animals, and the migrating herds at close range. A favorite activity during nature walks is to try and identify wildlife by their footprints and dung.
5. Bush Dinners
Bush dinners are conducted at sunset or under the romantic light of Mara stars. Gourmet meals made from fresh produce are drowned by a glass or ten of the finest wine and accompanied by background songs from the Maasai morans.
Watch the lanterns burn ferociously. Listen to the melodic whispers of the wild. Watch the slow yet lively burn of the dying bonfire. And soak in the breathtaking scenery laid bare in front of your eyes. The bush diner costs about GBP 40 per person and requires a minimum of 4 people.
6. Masai Village Visit
Besides game viewing, the local Maasai people are another reason why visitors flock to the park. The Morans (Maasai Warriors) typically have the honor of welcoming guests to the national reserve.
The vibrant young men from the Maasai tribe meet you at the car and pave your way to the brushwood enclosure with songs and dances. A Maasai village visit is a chance to sample and experience traditional Maasai culture.
Speckling the quaint yet sturdy village is the ingratitude of children. Some tied to their mothers’ backs with colourful shoals. Some sprawled out on the dirt indulging their curiosity.
The young Morans showcase their prowess with the kindling of fire, a feat followed by screaming horns that signify the arrival of guests. Minutes later, the village overflows with other Maasais, who never run out of songs, dances, and tales. Masai village visits are an excellent showcase of a century-old culture still thriving in a society that likes to dub itself ‘modernised.
The visit will have you marvel at the unique way of life of the Masai, their cow-dung, mud, and human urine huts (traditional Maasai manyatta), and their eye-catching beadwork.
The Maasai people are known for their intricate beadwork, which is used to decorate clothing, jewelry, and other items. The beads can be made from a variety of materials, including glass, metal, wood, and plastic. Maasai beadwork is often colorful and geometric in design, and it often features symbols that represent important aspects of Maasai culture.
Beadwork has been an important part of Maasai culture for centuries, and it is often used to indicate the wearer’s rank within the tribe or to commemorate important events. Today, beadwork is still worn by many Maasai people as a way to show their cultural identity. In addition to traditional designs, many Maasai people are now creating more modern designs with contemporary materials.
Overall, the Maasai culture is one of the best preserved in East Africa. The visit also provides excellent Masai Mara video and photo opportunities. One of the most popular activities and an unmissable Masai Mara video opportunity is witnessing the Maasai moran dance.
The dance is a ceremonial jig performed by the Maasai warriors to celebrate births, marriages, and other important occasions. The dancers are adorned in traditional clothes and jewellery, and they perform an elaborate dance that is both graceful and mesmerising.
If you’re lucky enough to witness a Masai moran dance, it is an experience you will never forget. The dance is a highlight of any visit to a local village to experience the traditional Maasai culture.
The Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration: Mara River Crossing
The Masai Mara wildebeest migration is often labelled the Greatest Migration on earth. It is a natural phenomenon that sees the migration of 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and 200,000 antelopes from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Maasai Mara. The climax of the Masai Mara wildebeest migration is the dramatic river crossing from Serengeti across the Mara River.
The Masai Mara Migration safari peaks from July to October; the herds move to the Maasai Mara from the Serengeti national park through the Mara River.
It is a phenomenal event that makes the reserve one of Africa’s top safari destinations and unifies the Mara Serengeti ecosystem.
It is also arguably, the event that led to the park’s conferment of its national reserve status. Once the migration is complete, the grass-nibbling creatures turn the then-lush plains upside down and do not leave till the grass is depleted. The dangerous journey back to Serengeti national park begins again in October.
The Mara North Conservancy
The Mara North Conservancy is a private wildlife conservancy established in 1999. It was formed as a partnership between the local Maasai community and conservation organizations.
The primary objectives of Masai Mara North Conservancy are to protect and manage the natural resources within the area, and to provide a sustainable livelihood for the local Maasai community.
The conservancy is home to an abundance of wildlife, including lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, and buffalo. The elephants that roam the reserve’s endless plains are only rivaled in number by those in Amboseli National Park.
Visitors to Masai Mara North Conservancy can enjoy safaris and game drives in 4×4 vehicles, as well as bush walks with experienced guides. There is also an array of excellent accommodation options available, from luxury tented camps to traditional Maasai Mara homes.
2023 Masai Mara Safari Packages from the UK: FAQ
Here are some common questions from people looking to travel to Masai Mara from the United Kingdom.
1. How Much Does a Masai Mara Safari Cost?
The cost of a Kenya safari in Maasai Mara is dependent on your choice of accommodation, transport, and the level of luxury you desire. That said, there are Maasai Mara Safari Packages for everyone, from budget to luxury travellers. Below are some of the safari packages we offer and their prices.
2. Which is the Best Month to Visit Masai Mara National Reserve?
The dry season spanning from July 1st to October 30th is considered the best month for a safari in Masai Mara national reserve. That is mainly because the dry weather brings abundant wildlife and better wildlife viewing opportunities in the vast wilderness.
Now, there are a few downsides to scheduling your Masai Mara holiday packages in this season. First, the park experiences a spike in tourists, which means it will be a little crowded and the accommodation a little pricier.
The rainy season of November 1st to December 15th is another excellent time to schedule Masai Mara Safari Packages .
You are promised excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, the downside being the difficult-to-navigate roads in the Kenya national parks and the possibility of rain interfering with planned activities.
Other advantages of this season include:
- A less busy park
- Lush sceneries both on the pristine riverine forests and savannah.
- It’s a great time to see newborn Maasai Mara animals
- And it’s an excellent time for bird watching in Kenya’s Mara riverine forest.
Those looking to save a few coins can visit during the low season- April 1st to 30th June. Rain, again, is the inhibitor here. The risk of having your activities interfered with is a matter of when not if.
The Festive season, December 15th to January 18th, is also a great time to visit the park . The park gates witness a great influx of visitors at this time but be prepared to splash a few more dollars than is the norm. However, game viewing is at its peak during the festive season.
3. Which is Better, Serengeti National Park or Maasai Mara National Reserve?
There is no black or white answer to this; rather, the solution lies in closely examining the similarities and differences in game-viewing opportunities between the two parks. In retrospect, both parks have equal wildlife varieties.
In both, the Big Nine, Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, and zebras, are a surety. However, the number of lions in the Serengeti is slightly higher than that in the Masai Mara.
Additionally, each wildlife sanctuary is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, stretching from South-West Kenya to the North of Tanzania . Breathtaking landscapes, lush, sometimes sunburned vegetation, favorable climates, and still-brown rivers are some of the hallmarks of this ecosystem.
Overall, size and wildlife density are perhaps some of the most noticeable differences between the two.
The Mara national reserve spans over 580 square miles, while the Serengeti stretches over 30,000 square miles. Even though this means more animals can be found in the Serengeti, it also means that the animal density is better at Masai Mara due to its small size.
The Maasai Mara reserve’s abundant wildlife is especially noticeable in the Mara triangle. In addition to that, Masai Mara Safari Packages are way cheaper than Serengeti safari packages . A safari that costs GBP 110 in the Serengeti averages at GBP 60 in Kenya.
That is partly due to the high accommodation fees in the Serengeti and the concession fee charged by the Tanzanian government. Maasai Mara national reserve vs Serengeti? The choice is yours as you pursue the best Africa Safari .
4. How Many Lions are in the Maasai Mara National Reserve?
More often than not, lions are what comes to mind when the word safari is mentioned. Now, the Mara wouldn’t be the haven it is without housing the King of the jungle. There are an estimated 800 to 900 lions spread across the Mara and its neighboring conservancies. You will catch these friendly cats in pride of 15-20 lions somewhere in the grasslands, savannahs, or dense scrubs.
5. Is Maasai Mara National Reserve Safe?
In our opinion- safe as a tortoise. The government, through the Narok county council, has invested heavily in the safety of tourists. Meanwhile, the Mara triangle is managed by the Trans Mara county council, also under the Kenya government.
Guests who wish to have an added layer of security may consider staying at a private conservancy. A private conservancy is an area set aside for conservation and tourism within the Mara ecosystem.
Popular conservancies you can visit on your Masai Mara safari in Kenya include Enonkishu Conservancy, Lemek Conservancy, and Mara Naboisho Conservancy. You might also consider Mara North Conservancy, Mara Siana Conservancy, Motorogi conservancy, Nashulai Maasai Conservancy, and Ol kinyei conservancy. Private conservancies offer better security for visitors than the Masai Mara national reserve does.
For example, the Sarara private conservancy has a high fence that keeps wildlife out, and it employs armed rangers to patrol the area. You are therefore perfectly safe whether you are going on nature walks, a hot air balloon safari, or game drives. The Conservancy also has its own airport, which makes it easy to get to.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is still a popular destination for Kenya safaris, but it is important to do your research before booking one. Make sure you choose a reputable company that offers good security. The ball is, therefore, left entirely in your court.
When visiting Kenya, observe the usual safety precautions. Avoid traveling late at night, do not leave your luggage unattended, avoid dark alleys, and take all recommended vaccines.
Also, follow your guide’s instructions during game drives, stay in your car, and always have your guide with you for any walks, hikes, or drives. By and large, Kenya is a safe country to tour.
6. What Animals are Known as the Big 5 in Maasai Mara?
The Big Five is a term used for wildlife that hunters found most difficult and dangerous to hunt. These animals are found in various parks in Kenya, including the Maasai Mara game reserve, and include the elephant, lion, rhino, African buffalo, and leopard.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is a triangular-shaped reserve in Kenya, that lies at the convergence of the Great Rift Valley and the Serengeti ecozones. More specifically, the Mara Triangle is a region in the Masai Mara national reserve that is known for its high population the Big Five.
The triangle gets its name from the three rivers that meet there: the Talek, the Olare Motorogi, and the Mara River. The Mara Triangle is a popular destination for safaris, as it offers some of the best opportunities to see lions in action.
The area is well-managed and safe for tourists and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. If you’re looking for an exciting safari adventure in Africa , be sure to add the Mara Triangle to your list!
7. Why is the Maasai Mara National Reserve a Great Place to Go on Safari?
The Masai Mara national reserve and its neighbouring private conservancies stand out as an exceptional safari destination for several reasons. First is its all-year-round game viewing opportunities, which expose you to over 56 wildlife species and over 450 bird species.
The soul-stirring Masai Mara Migration is the second reason why safaris in the park are captivating. The thrilling event features unending masses of zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles, who wrestle their way past the enormous crocodiles of River Mara in search of greener pastures (literally).
The third is the top-notch accommodation facilities for which the park is known. Fourth, the strings of exciting activities within the park. Fifth is its tranquil ambiance, and last but not least, its magnificent scenery.
It is the perfect setup for game-viewing expeditions. These include game drives in the Mara triangle, Hot-air balloon safaris, hikes, and walks. Also on the bucket list are visits to a Masai village, and bush lunches and dinners.
8. What Month is the Great Migration in Tanzania?
The Serengeti Migration is at its peak from late June to August and from January to March. In June, the large herds of animals are visible from the western side of the Serengeti, while northern Serengeti is in August.
November and December’s short rainy months also allow you to catch glimpses of the wildlife returning from Kenya. Meanwhile, the calving season, which falls between January to March, allows you to watch as new wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes spring to life.
9. How Much is a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Masai Mara?
A Mara Hot-air balloon costs GBP 350 per person sharing for all its luxury and magnificence. The ride is an hour long and effortlessly marries a sunset, a spectacular panorama, and a tranquil ambiance.
The balloon’s flying height is manoeuvred to ensure you either catch a close glimpse of the wildlife or a bird’s eye view of the sublime landscape. The cherry on top is the delicious breakfast with which the safari climaxes. The breakfast is served at the heart of the wild and is accompanied by a glass of the finest wine
10. How Much Does it Cost to Fly from Nairobi to Masai Mara?
Here are the average costs of plane tickets to/from Nairobi to/from Masai Mara at different times.
11. How Long Does it Take for Wildebeest to Migrate?
If there’s anything we’ve learned in the 20 years we have been in business, it’s that nature sets the pace when it comes to the Great Migration. But being in business as long as we have, we have learned a thing or two about predicting the Wildebeest Migration period.
A Masai Mara safari to see the calving season is best planned between February to March. At this time, new life is springing in the southern side of the Serengeti.
Not long after, the long rainy season of April to May signifies the beginning of the breeding season. The first sightings of the Grumeti River Crossings along central Serengeti are made in early May and last till June.
The Masai Mara migration begins in late June to August when the wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles are speckled all over the Masai Mara. The wildebeest are back on the move to the Southern Serengeti in November.
12. Where is the Best Place to see the Wildebeest Migration?
Anywhere within viewing distance is an excellent place to witness the Masai Mara migration . However, Mara River and the Ndutu Plains of Serengeti come highly recommended.
A couple of resorts, private conservancies, and hotels provide pretty decent views. These include Keekorok Lodge, Basecamp Masai Mara, and Angama Mara.
13. What Activities Can Be Done in Masai Mara?
The question is ‘What can’t one do in the Masai Mara’?
Over 56 wildlife species within the park, most of which can be viewed while on game drives or Masai Mara walking safaris.
Morning, evening or night game drives are the options you have: and believe this, it’s worth every dime.
Balloon safaris are yet another activity the park has to offer. For an hour, you are cruised over sceneries beyond belief and exposed to wildlife as you’ve never seen it before.
Luxury, the balloon safaris never run short of, the exceptional rides ending with a scenic breakfast in the park.
Masai Mara picnics are where effortless sceneries and tranquil ambiences marry with wildlife sightings to present transcendent experiences.
The lunches/dinners happen at the heart of the park, the bewildered guests exposed to hundreds of wildlife and beautiful sceneries.
On the other hand, cultural tours introduce you to the native Masai, a tribe shrouded by mystery, culture, and eye-catching artwork.
Marvel at their distinct architecture, join in their songs and dances, sample their meals, or even learn a thing or two about lighting fire from sticks.
Horseback safaris are for those whose idea of fun is spectacular views and cool breezes.
You get to partake in the Mara magnificence on horseback, an experience indeed worth its weight in gold.
Last is the thrilling Mara Migration, which introduces you to 1.5 million wildebeests, 300,000 zebras and over 200,000 gazelles.
The spectacle is as beautiful as blood-curdling, the prey wrestling blood-starved crocodiles to make it past the Mara River from the Serengeti.
14. What Animals Live in the Masai Mara?
One of the most breathtaking parks in the African continent, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is also ecologically diverse.
This is mainly because the park hosts over 56 wildlife species, 450 bird species, and countless plant species.
Below is a list of the Masai Mara animals.
15. How Do You Get from Nairobi to Masai Mara?
Depending on your budget, safety concerns, and individual needs, you can get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi by either car or airplane. Masai Mara to Nairobi is a 280km drive covered within 6 hours by car and within 45 minutes to an hour by plane.
While traveling by road has the advantage of viewing the Kenyan countryside, the journey might be arduous to some and extremely tiring.
Flying, on the other hand, has the advantage of comfortability, flexibility, and timeliness. However, the mentioned flights might not be a cheap option for those looking for a budget Kenya safari in Masai Mara.
16. Can You Self Drive in the Masai Mara?
Yes, you certainly can. Though not necessarily cheaper than travelling in safari company vehicles, self-drives are a popular option for those who value their freedom and flexibility.
Self-drive Masai Mara Safari not only requires that you hire your 4×4 car but that you are well-versed with the Kenyan road or at least portray good map-reading skills.
While you might have the luxury of stopping whenever, wherever, the six-hour drive is a feat for those not used to the rough roads that lead to the Mara. Getting lost is another added risk, but that is nothing a little asking around can’t fix. Overall, a guided Masai Mara Safari is the best option.

It was also amazing to experience a more desert style safari trip with amazing terrain and different sightings. I would travel with safari.com again in a heartbeat. Thank you!"

Africa and safaris go hand in hand, so you can see plenty of wildlife during a holiday to this part of the world. In Kenya, you can roam the Maasai Mara's 500-square-mile plains in search of the Big Five - buffaloes, rhinos, elephants, lions and leopards. Hwange National Park, in Zimbabwe, is a good place to spot them, too.
In addition to that, Masai Mara Safari Packages are way cheaper than Serengeti safari packages. A safari that costs GBP 110 in the Serengeti averages at GBP 60 in Kenya. That is partly due to the high accommodation fees in the Serengeti and the concession fee charged by the Tanzanian government.
Tuningi Lodge is in the Madikwe Game Reserve, which is Malaria FREE. Big 5 Safari - Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Elephants, Buffalo. Only 4h drive from Johannesburg. Exclusive safari activities. Being a private game reserve, Madikwe has more freedom to traverse the reserve looking for wildlife, without having to stick to roads etc.
