The Western Wall

Here stands the remnant of the ancient Jewish Temple. People come from all over the world to pray at the wall and feel its strong spiritual presence. Write down your greatest wish and place it in the wall cracks, following the tradition of thousands of years and millions of Jews.

City of King David Excavations

In 1004 BCE, King David conquered this city and secured the place where the Holy Temple would eventually be built by his son, King Solomon. Remaining structures such as Warren’s Shaft and the Tunnel of Siloam exhibit the intricate workings of this ancient capital city.

Jerusalem Archaeological Park

Experience Second Temple-era Jerusalem on the eve of its destruction by the Romans. See a virtual reconstruction of the Temple, visit the stores and walkways of the surrounding city and see the remnants of the staircase that led to the Temple Mount and the Holy of Holies.

Wohl Archaeological Museum – The Herodian Quarter

In 1967, six Herodian-era houses located beneath the Jewish Quarter were excavated. This amazing museum was built to tell the story of the homes and to exhibit the remains that were found. A private ritual bath, a palatial mansion and a mosaic floor are on display here.

Day 3 Tuesday

Jerusalem old city, old city jewish quarter.

The Jewish Quarter remains one of the single most-visited spots in all of Israel. Nestled within one square kilometer of land lay millennia of ancient history. The Old City dates back to the 8th century BCE and is home to numerous landmarks of historical significance.

Zedekiah’s Cave – Solomon’s Quarries

Explore what is believed to be the place where Herod the Great quarried stones in order to renovate Jerusalem’s Holy Temple. This 5-acre cave can be found 30 feet below street level under the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, just between the Damascus and Herod Gates.

 The Four Sephardic Synagogues

During the War of Independence, residents of the Jewish Quarter found cover here for two continuous weeks. After the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, these four synagogues were rehabilitated, and today they are frequented by the residents of the Jewish Quarter

Tower of David Museum

The Tower of David served a military purpose until 1967, when it was re-captured by Israel and turned into a museum of Jerusalem’s history. Now you can view the most thorough collection of Jerusalem artifacts, from the Canaanite period 4,000 years ago up to today.

King David’s Tomb

Located on Mount Zion in a 1,000-year-old building, people come here to pay tribute to the great King David, who is most notably famous for composing the Book of Psalms and establishing a unified capital for Israel. A medieval tradition places his tomb at this location.

Built in the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent, the vantage points of these ramparts were used by Jordanian snipers against the Israelis from 1948-1967. Walk along the top of the wall and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the Jewish and Christian quarters of the Old City.

This organization is dedicated to every aspect of the Temple in Jerusalem. After many years of effort and toil, the three most important and central vessels of the Holy Temple have been reconstructed. Priestly garments, incense and musical instruments are also on display.

 The Rebuilt Hurva Synagogue

This synagogue was known as the primary Ashkenazi synagogue in Jerusalem from 1864 until it was destroyed during the 1948 War of Independence by the Jordanians. For many years, only its arch remained, but it was recently rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

Tower of David Night Spectacular

In the evening you’ll head back to the Tower of David’s rooftop to view an epic nighttime extravaganza of sight and sound, depicting the conquests of the Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, Turks and others, as they tried to overtake Jerusalem. This show is simply “Spectacular.”

Hutzut Hayotzer Artists Colony

Two years after the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, a no-man’s land between the New and Old City of Jerusalem was transformed into an artist’s colony. The artists, meet and welcome you personally. A visit to Hutzot Hayotzer is a must for the discerning visitor interested in Jerusalem’s History and in international level of art, design and craftsmanship.

Old City Jerusalem

Traditionally, the story of Jerusalem extends over 4 millennium. However, its greatness became renowned only after David subdued it and made it the capital of the Children of Israel.

It gained importance when the first temple was built on Mt. Moriah (traditionally the site that Abraham was meant to sacrifice Isaac).

Since then it has become the heart of monotheistic belief and the focal point of Judaism.

Religious services can be arranged for all faiths, on request.

Sample Itinerary

Welcome to Israel! Begin your journey inward by mining the rich seam of timeless, relevant Jewish wisdom that is your birthright. Under the endless clear skies and waving palm trees of the Negev, you’ll finish the day with a nourishing dinner, stargazing, and a restorative sleep in the luxurious Kedma Hotel.

Embrace the adrenaline only the desert can deliver with exhilarating off-road Jeeping across the spectacular Ramon Crater and an exclusive tour of an Israeli Air Force base. Then, head into Tel Aviv to learn with Momentum Educators, network with new sisters, and explore the neon-lit neighborhoods of this beachside city.

What does courage mean to our people – and how might you find it for yourself? Embrace Israel’s courageous contributions to the Jewish people – and to the modern world – with visits to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the Peres Center for Peace, Na Laga’at, and the Asif Culinary Institute.

In the morning, the city of Tel Aviv is your playground as you sing, dance, eat, laugh, and explore during immersive, multi-sensory experiences at Guru Zuzu and the Ethiopian Heritage Center. Then, depart for Jerusalem, Israel’s capital and spiritual center, for your first glimpse of the Western Wall and time to dine together in the Old City.

Jerusalem welcomes you with golden stones, rich history, and open arms. As Shabbat approaches, visit the Heichal Shlomo Jewish Heritage Center and immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of Shabbat preparations. When the sun sets that evening, gather with your sisters to welcome Shabbat with candlelight, singing and dancing at the Kotel, and a delicious dinner at the Orient Hotel.

Pause and breathe, reflect and celebrate. Embrace the stillness of Shabbat morning with rejuvenating yoga, then dive into a meaningful exploration of the importance of legacy. Wander through the quiet streets of the Old City to lunch at the home of a local Jerusalem family, and say goodbye to Shabbat in the evening with musical rooftop Havdalah service.

As you walk in the footsteps of your foremothers in the Judean desert, reflect deeply on the Jewish values of achdut v’areyvut – unity and mutual responsibility – and imagine the legacy we want to leave to our children and grandchildren. Back in Jerusalem, soak up the magic of the Machane Yehuda shuk with a gourmet chef, then connect with members of Momentum’s distinguished Public Council over a special group dinner.

On your final day, convene for a private meeting with Isaac "Bougie" Herzog, the President of Israel, at his home in the Talbiya neighborhood of Jerusalem. After a tour of the Israel Museum, gather with all 250 of your Momentum sisters in the lush Judean foothills. Full of gratitude and ready to channel your growth, celebrate the culmination of this transformative experience and wish each other lehitra’ot – until next time!

Israel Travel Secrets

Golf in Israel and Israel Golf Vacations

Golf in Israel and Israel Golf Vacations

Golf in Israel – Did you know that Israel offers one of the top 100 golf courses in the world?

Not only that but a genuine 18 hole Pete Dye design. The only course he has done outside of the U.S.

I am referring to the recently re-opened golf club in Caesarea Israel. My son Aaron is an avid golfer and belongs to the Youth Academy there.

Let me tell you why you should make Israel your next golf vacation and see my top tips and recommendations for the best Israel golf tours and packages.

Enjoy this short video taken entirely on location in Caesarea Israel –

“It’s Tee Time”

A Bit of History about Golf in Israel

The Caesarea course, originally created by the Rothschild family in 1961, was the site where Lord Baron De Rothschild played its first tee shot before an exhibition match between Sam Sneed and Harry Whitman.

The site for many years was considered an average course with great potential. Fast forward to August 2007, the CDC or Caesarea Development Corporation decided to redevelop the entire course with a team of international experts and world renowned architect Pete Dye.

In May of 2009, the course was officially re-opened just in time for the 18th Israeli Maccabi games. “The Israeli version of the Olympics”.

Caesarea Golf Course – A World Class Offering

Offering serious golfers a broad range of options including well-manicured greens and fairways, a diverse course program, spacious practice courses, a skilled staff, a golf academy and a golf school for children, a pro shop with name brand golf and sporting equipment, and a gourmet restaurant. Albatross – I have eaten there many times and the food is really great!

The Ancient Port City of Caesarea

the ancient port city of caesarea at night

The Club is located in the village of Caesarea , near everything including recreational and vacation spots, the ancient port city of Caesarea, the spectacular Aqueduct beach over 4000 years old and still standing. Not to mention the Caesarea Port (one of my personal favorites), an area that boasts a host of tourist attractions and rare archaeological ruins, a magnificent esplanade, an underwater archaeological park, and a wide range of restaurants, cafes and galleries. Literally within walking distance you can reach the luxurious Dan Caesarea Golf Hotel , the Caesar Spa , and a superb Fitness club with all of the latest equipment (Go Active).

Israel Golf Vacations and Tours

Golf in Israel,  specifically  golf vacations in Israel are becoming more and more popular. It is the perfect venue. With the combination of a world class course, warm sunny weather nearly year round, as well as endless other choices of things to see and do in Israel during your trip.

There are many options available for golf packages of 3-5 days, midweek, weekend, or we can help custom design a package for you.

I actually live in the area and am quite familiar with all of the offerings including restaurants, hotels, Zimmers, and great places to visit.

caesarea golf course front entrance

The Future of Golf in Israel

Israel is on its way to becoming a golf empire according to the Israel Ministry of Tourism and the Israel Land administration. There are already aggressive plans in the works to build 16 new golf courses across the country at a projected cost of $200 Million.

With the perfect climate and resources to support such a venture, Israel wants to become a global golf tourist destination much like Europe and Australia.

Investing in the golf industry is just good business for Israel as it is projected to increase the amount spent by the average tourist by 100% while increasing the occupancy for Hotels in Israel significantly as well.

My Top Recommendations for Golf in Israel

  • Tee Times – Early morning or Late Afternoon during the summer months (May-October)
  • Water  – Take a water bottle with you with containing at least 1-2 liters per person.
  • Sun Hat and Sun Screen  – The UV index during the summer is a 9 or 10 almost daily.
  • Sunglasses:   Also highly recommended.
  • Food –  I usually bring something small that offers plenty of protein. A peanut butter sandwich and piece of fruit, but there is a great snack place to stop at the end of the front 9 (Itzik’s Place) with great homemade sandwiches and salads.
  • Course Markers   – The course is well marked with postings at each hole. Also, a pace chart is supplied to keep you comfortably separated from the other golfers.
  • Spare balls – There are many narrow fairways and sand traps that will offer enough opportunities to lose your ball.
  • Bathrooms : There are bathrooms along the course that are very clean and well maintained.
  • Pictures : Lots of great photo opportunities so have your camera phone ready.
  • Cell Phone – Always recommended whenever you travel.

Blinken adds Israel stop to latest Mideast tour as tensions rise over Gaza war

Matthew Lee

Associated Press

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken meets Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Wednesday, March 20, 2024. (Evelyn Hockstein/Pool Photo via AP)

JEDDAH – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel this week as part of his sixth urgent mission to the Middle East since the Israelis' war with Hamas began in October, as relations between the two countries have soured dramatically in recent weeks.

The visit comes amid a flurry of calls, planned trips by U.S. and Israeli officials and public airings of severe disagreements over the state of the conflict — notably Israeli plans to mount a major military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah and what will happen to Gaza after the war ends.

Recommended Videos

The State Department said the Israel stop would cap Blinken’s latest Mideast tour that started in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and will continue in Egypt on Thursday. The top U.S. diplomat will be in Tel Aviv on Friday after talks with Arab leaders and foreign ministers in Jeddah and Cairo focused on the war in Gaza.

“In Israel, Secretary Blinken will discuss with the leadership of the government of Israel the ongoing negotiations to secure the release of all hostages,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said. “He will discuss the need to ensure the defeat of Hamas, including in Rafah, in a way that protects the civilian population, does not hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and advances Israel’s overall security.”

Tensions between the U.S. and Israel over the prosecution of the Gaza war have been mounting for months over rising civilian casualties. And they have intensified as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said he will ignore President Joe Biden's warnings not to start a large-scale ground operation in Rafah without credible plans to protect innocent Palestinians who have sought refuge there.

Biden, facing a tough re-election campaign ahead of November's presidential election, is under growing domestic pressure to rein in Israel's military response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. Opposition to the war in the United States, Arab nations and much of the rest of the world has shaped the evolution of Blinken's frequent trips to the region since October.

His first two visits were largely focused on re-affirming U.S. support for Israel in the immediate aftermath of the Hamas attacks, but as civilian Palestinian casualties began to multiply and humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorated, his emphasis shifted to boosting humanitarian assistance and protecting innocents.

Since late last year, Blinken has also used his visits to stress the importance of Arab support for “day after” plans for Gaza and trying to coax Israeli leaders into accepting a status for the Palestinians that could help ensure Israel's long-term security.

As that shift has taken place, though, the situation in Gaza has gotten worse and relations between the U.S. and Israel have nosedived. Public disagreements between Biden and Netanyahu have become more frequent and more intense.

In a phone call with Biden on Monday, their first in more than a month, Netanyahu agreed to send a high-level delegation to Washington to discuss plans for the proposed Rafah operation, and the Pentagon said Tuesday that Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant would visit the U.S. capital next week.

In his talks in Jeddah, Cairo and Tel Aviv, Blinken is expected to focus on attempts to negotiate a cease-fire and hostage release deal, increase humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza by land, air and sea and plan for the territory's post-conflict future.

In the Red Sea city of Jeddah, Blinken met with Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The prospect of normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel is seen as a potential point of leverage in pushing the Israelis on easing civilian suffering in Gaza.

Blinken and Prince Faisal “discussed the urgent need to protect all civilians in Gaza and immediately increase humanitarian assistance to those in need,” the State Department said, adding that “resolving the conflict” and “preparing for the post-conflict phase” remain a top priority.

Blinken also “emphasized the United States’ commitment to achieving sustained peace through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel," the department said in a statement.

But the Saudis have made clear that normalization won't happen unless it is accompanied by a clear commitment from Israel to accept an independent Palestinian state by a date certain. Netanyahu and many members of his far-right government are opposed to a Palestinian state.

In Cairo on Thursday, Blinken will see Egyptian officials as well as meet with a six-member Arab committee that includes foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, according to an Egyptian diplomat.

This group has been charged with exploring ways to revamp, reform and revitalize the Palestinian Authority for a possible governance role in Gaza once the war is over. The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority has committed to reforms and replaced some of its top leadership.

Blinken's discussions are also expected to touch on the cease-fire negotiations that have taken on new urgency as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire.

Qatari officials, whose country is the main interlocutor with Hamas, said this week they were “cautiously optimistic” after talks with Israel’s intelligence chief in Doha. But, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday that an Israeli ground operation in Rafah would set back any talks.

At least 31,819 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead. A United Nations food agency warned that “famine is imminent” in northern Gaza .

Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people in the surprise Oct. 7 attack out of Gaza that triggered the war, and and abducted another 250 people. Hamas is still believed to be holding some 100 people hostage, as well as the remains of 30 others.

Crusader Route

Fascinated by knights, knighthood and chivalry? Relive it by following the Crusaders in the Holyland.

The Crusaders were knights on a mission to establish Christendom, rallied by popes and fueled with religious fervor, they set out from Europe to liberate Jerusalem.

Although the Crusaders governed most of the Holyland for a period of less than 200 years, which in historical terms is rather short, their mark can be seen almost everywhere.

The Crusaders in Jerusalem

Although the walls of the city are from a much later period, there is no mistaking the Crusader presence when walking around the Old City. From King David’s Tomb and the cenacle, to the remnants of the German hospice on Mt. Zion; and from the magnificent Church of St. Anne, which is an intact and original Crusader building that was not destroyed but rather converted into a school ( madrasa ) under Moslem rule and which still retains the Arabic sign, to the remnants of an underground Crusader hospital run by the Hospitaller Knights in the Muristan area of the Christian Quarter, uncovered by archeological excavations held in 2013, and of course the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with its Crusader façade.

As you walk around you can imagine the streets teeming with pilgrims, residents and various orders of knights, the more renowned being the Templars (who were an elite warrior force and guards of the temple – hence their name) and Hospitallers.

The Crusaders in Acre

Following the conquest of Jerusalem in 1187 by Saladin, the Crusaders established themselves in Acre, constructing a fortress, the remnants of which have been restored. Located on the sea and near the port, the Templars, who by this time had become a formidable force and very rich, constructed a tunnel that could be used as an escape route and a hidden means of entering the castle. The tunnel as well as much of the castle are accessible and can be visited today. In the spirit of reviving the Crusader kingdom, the restored castle and tunnel provide the perfect backdrop for an authentic knights’ experience, in the form of medieval style feasts, stalls, and jousting matches that are provided for visiting guests.

The Crusaders in Atlit

Construction of the Chateau Pelerin or Atlit Castle was commenced by the Templars in 1218 to fortify their hold in the Holyland. It could hold over 5000 troops and its position on a promontory flanked by the sea on two sides, made it difficult to siege or conquer. After the fall of Acre, it remained the last stronghold of the Crusaders, who remained there until defeated by the Mamelukes in 1291. The castle was destroyed by an earthquake in 1837, and has never been restored. Today it can only be seen from afar, as it is the site of a military base in Israel. The ancient cemetery beside it is open to the public.

So now, all those whose imaginations were captured by “Assassin Creed” and “The Da Vinci Code” can visit Israel and bring their stories to life by taking the Crusader route. Let us know, and we will make it happen.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — When Shawn Landis, an evangelical Christian from Pennsylvania, heard about the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, he knew he would come to Israel to volunteer as soon as it was safe.

Five months later, he was chopping vegetables in a Tel Aviv kitchen, preparing meals for Israeli soldiers.

Evangelicals have been among Israel’s fiercest foreign supporters for years, particularly in the United States, where their significant political influence has helped shape the Israel policy of recent Republican administrations.

They believe Israel is key to an end-times prophecy that will bring about the return of the Christian Messiah. Many of these Christians support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland.

“In the Scripture it instructs us to support Israel, and sometimes the best time to support someone is when they’re grieving,” said Landis, who has been on four previous faith-based trips to Israel. “Friendship is not just about being there for the good times, it’s also about the rough times.”

Israel’s Tourism Ministry estimates around one-third to half of the approximately 3,000 daily visitors expected to arrive in March are part of faith-based volunteer trips. Before the fighting, around 15,000 visitors arrived in Israel per day, about half of whom were Christian, according to Tourism Ministry statistics. In 2019, the latest tourism statistics available that were not impacted by COVID-19, about 25% of visitors arrived on organized trips, according to the Tourism Ministry.

A study by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that almost half of Israelis volunteered in some capacity during the early weeks of the war. But many Israeli volunteers have returned to work and school, and now international visitors are filling the gaps.

In the U.S., support for Israel has become a top priority for evangelical Christians during a presidential election year. They are among the most outspoken backers of Israel’s handling of the conflict, and Republicans have faced pressure to hew not just to traditional Republican support for Israel but to beliefs rooted in the Bible.

The war began with Hamas’ attack in southern Israel in which militants killed around 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage. Israel responded with an invasion of the Gaza Strip that so far has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians.

On Oct. 11, dozens of leading evangelicals signed a statement of support for Israel organized by the public policy wing of the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest evangelical faith group in the U.S.

One of the key pro-Israel groups in the U.S. is Christians United for Israel, founded and led by evangelical pastor John Hagee. CUFI says it has raised and dispersed more than $3 million to support Israeli first responders, health care workers, and survivors of the Oct. 7 attack.

Landis was part of a two-week volunteer trip organized by the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem. The evangelical group has put together five volunteer trips since January and expects to bring half a dozen more in the coming month. Normally, ICEJ brings about 6,000 Christian visitors to Israel annually.

Like Landis, Claudio Pichardo, a 37-year-old from Colombia studying business in Holland, was inspired by Scripture to join the ICEJ trip. “This is the best way I can help, because posting on Facebook doesn’t help,” he said.

When the war started, many international airlines suspended flights and tourism stopped, aside from a handful of Jewish and Christian solidarity missions. Some major airlines resumed flights to Israel in recent weeks, and others plan to soon.

Peleg Lewi, the foreign affairs adviser to the Tourism Ministry, said the faith-based solidarity missions boost morale. They can also kick-start overall tourism to Israel after a cycle of war or violence, he said.

With the war in its sixth month, Israel is under growing international pressure to do more to end the suffering of civilians in Gaza, including allowing in more aid. Aid groups say the fighting has displaced most of the territory’s population and pushed a quarter of the population to the brink of famine . Hospitals have reported that some children have died of hunger.

Many Israelis fear the world is forgetting about Oct. 7.

Elizabeth Ødegaard, a trip participant from Norway, said she was surprised by how emotional Israelis get when they meet international visitors who have come to support them.

“Many people tell us, `The whole world hates us. Everyone is against us,’ so I want to say to them, `You’re not alone,’” she said. “I know the people of Israel are important to God. These are my brothers and sisters, and when they attack Israel, they attack me too.”

ICEJ trip participants visited hard-hit communities in southern Israel, including the site where the shells of hundreds of burned-out cars are being stored, many from the Tribe of Nova music festival , where 364 people were killed.

“It was humbling and sobering to be there, to know what happened a few months ago and to see Israeli resilience,” said Landis.

During such trips, visitors join volunteer initiatives that sprang up in Israel over the past five months, providing extra hands for farmers struggling to harvest crops, cooking meals for families who have a parent serving in the reserves or sorting donations for evacuees still living in hotels.

One initiative is Citrus & Salt, which previously hosted cooking classes and tours of Tel Aviv’s markets for tourists. When the war started, it pivoted to making more than 35,000 donated meals.

“It really helps boost morale for people to come from abroad to Israel in a time of conflict, to physically say, ‘I’m here to help. What do you need?’” said Aliya Fastman, a native of Berkeley, California, who has lived in Israel for over a decade and runs Citrus & Salt with her sister. “Chopping onions is no small thing when you fly across the world to do it.”

In October 2022, amid a flurry of media appearances promoting their film “Tàr,” the director Todd Field and the star Cate Blanchett made time to visit a cramped closet in Manhattan. This closet, which has become a sacred space for movie buffs, was once a disused bathroom at the headquarters of the Criterion Collection, a 40-year-old company dedicated to “gathering the greatest films from around the world” and making high-quality editions available to the public on DVD and Blu-ray and, more recently, through its streaming service, the Criterion Channel. Today Criterion uses the closet as its stockroom, housing films by some 600 directors from more than 50 countries — a catalog so synonymous with cinematic achievement that it has come to function as a kind of film Hall of Fame. Through a combination of luck, obsession and good taste, this 55-person company has become the arbiter of what makes a great movie, more so than any Hollywood studio or awards ceremony.

Egypt Tourism Chief: Israel-Hamas War Drags Down Growth

Egypt won't see a full recovery in American tourism until the Israel-Hamas war comes to an end.

American tourism to Egypt has been slow to recover since the war between Israel and Hamas started in October. That’s what Egypt Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa told Skift this month at ITB Berlin, the travel trade show.

Tourism overall isn’t growing as expected. “In the first two months of the year, we’ve seen a growth of 6% vis-à-vis the same period last year. We were expecting 20%,” he said.

In October and November — top travel months for Egypt — tour operators saw mass cancellations from Americans and other Western tourists .

Egypt expected over 4.2 million tourists in the final quarter of the year, but ended up with 3.6 million. Most of the drop can be attributed to American travelers, said Issa.

Despite the end-of-year slowdown, Egypt ended 2023 with a record number of tourists: 14.9 million, according to the Egypt’s tourism ministry.

American and European Tourists Still Nervous About Egypt

Tour operators say American bookings for Egypt have been soft this year due to the war. “We are getting bookings, but it’s a fraction of what it should be,” said Kelly Torrens, vice president of product for luxury tour operator Kensington Tours. Egypt was one of Kensington’s most popular destinations last year.

“It’s better, but it has not come back to levels pre-October,” said Yves Marceau, vice president of product for adventure tour operator G Adventures.

Demand from European travelers is healthier. “Canada and the U.S. are down the most and have been slow to recover. The UK and Europe are bouncing back faster,” said Marceau.

Tour operators with only European source markets see positive growth. “We are very pleased with the volumes we see for Egypt,” said WeRoad CEO Andrea D’Amico. The company plans to invest in more itineraries for Egypt this year.

During my trip to Egypt in late February, I visited the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. The area was busy with tourists from all over the world, but I barely saw or heard any Americans.  My tour guide also told me American tourists have been absent.

The loss of American tourists is most felt in Egypt’s cultural tourism sector. “Where we’ve seen the most decline is in cultural tourism which the Americans are really interested in,” said Issa.

To keep international tourism flowing, Egypt’s tourism ministry has been offering incentives to prop up airlines flying to select destinations and reimburse tour operator marketing programs.

“We told them, listen we’re there to de-risk the product for you and here’s some incentive money that is designed to reduce the risks for you,” said Issa.

Egypt’s Tourism Sector Developments

  • Grand Egyptian Museum’s grand opening date is still TBD. Issa expects to finish installing all of its pieces into the world’s largest archaeological museum by the end of March. The museum has been estimated to cost $1 billion and has been under construction since 2013. Its opening has been repeatedly delayed. “Egypt wants this to be not only about the Grand Egyptian Museum , it also wants it to be about a whole new visitor experience at the pyramids,” said Issa.
  • UAE’s $35 billion Plan to Develop Ras El Hekma, Egypt. “ Over the past 50 years, Egyptians have been going there for domestic travel. Typically there was not much international tourism there,” said Issa. “We expect this project to reintroduce the North Coast as a serious destination in Egypt.”
  • Room capacity continues to grow. In 2023, Egypt added 14,000 hotel rooms to reach a capacity of 220,000. In 2024, the country is going to another 25,000 rooms.
