Airport Tips You Need to Know for Your Next Trip

This post is all about the best airport tips. Traveling is fun, but getting through the airport can be an exhausting and hectic experience sometimes.

Since I worked for a big firm, I spent a LOT of time in airports traveling for my job. In fact, there have been a few months where I was flying for work every single week!

With all the time I’ve spent at airports, I’ve picked up quite a few helpful tips along the way.

So here are 15 awesome airport tips to help make your travel experience better!

Travel Hacks for the Airport

1. Bring your own snacks.

Avoid paying super-steep airport prices for snacks by bringing your own with you! Some of my favorite snacks to bring with me for flights are popcorn, fruit leather, energy bars, and trail mix.

🥜 See more airplane snack ideas for long flights .

2. Pack an empty water bottle.

I always bring an empty water bottle with me in my carry-on luggage so I can fill it up once I get through security.

Most airports have water bottle refill stations or at least a water fountain you can use. This will help you save money instead of buying an overpriced water bottle at the airport.

This refillable water bottle is perfect for travel because it comes with a filtering straw that makes water from anywhere safe to drink!

3. Check in for your flight in advance.

Be sure to check in for your flight online 24 hours in advance so you don’t have to wait in line once you get to the airport. This can also be a great way to grab a good seat assignment if you weren’t able to select your seat when you booked your ticket.

Another incentive to check in for your flight before you arrive at the airport: Some budget airlines are now charging extra if you wait to check in with an agent!

4. Wear socks

Some airports make you take your shoes off when going through security, especially in the US. To avoid standing barefoot on the dirty airport floor, make sure to wear socks! They will also come in handy for keeping your feet warm on your flight.

5. Dress in layers for your flight

On a similar note to above, dress in layers to stay comfortable while at the airport and on your flight. Airports and airplanes can either be extremely cold or extremely hot and usually there’s no happy in-between so wearing layers will help.

6. Bring a portable charger

Not all airports have convenient outlets or charging stations while you’re waiting at the gate, so be sure to bring a portable charger with you! I take this portable phone charger everywhere I go and it has been a lifesaver when I’m traveling.

7. Pack your laptop in an easy to reach place

You will have to take your laptop or any other large electronics out of your bag when going through security. To avoid having to dig through your bag while waiting in line, make sure to pack your laptop or any other electronics in a side pocket of your luggage with easy access.

For frequent business travelers, you may also want to get a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment . This makes it a breeze to reach for your laptop at the airport!

8. Take a photo of your parking space

If you’ll be parking at the airport, make sure to take a picture of your parking space and any helpful signage or numbering that will help you find it again when you return.

There’s nothing worse than returning from a vacation only to be unable to remember where you parked your car, leading you to wander around the airport parking garage for an hour!

9. Take a photo of your checked luggage

On the off chance that your checked luggage gets lost, having a photo of it in addition to your luggage receipt can make it much easier to locate.

10. Pack hand sanitizer

Airports and airplanes are a mecca for germs, so pack a travel-sized hand sanitizer wherever you go. I like  this hand sanitizer because you can easily clip it to your backpack or purse.

11. Research sleep spots

If you’ll need to spend the night in an airport because your flight was delayed or you have a long layover, check out this website for the best and worst sleeping spots in most airports around the world.

Sleeping in the airport is never fun, but you can make it a little more comfortable if you plan in advance and know the best places to go.

12. Keep and pack hotel toiletries in carry-on

Every time you stay at a hotel, bring extra travel-sized toiletries home with you. Then any time you travel with only carry-on luggage, you’ll have a collection of TSA-approved toiletries to pack.

(And bonus, you won’t need to buy your own shampoo/conditioner as often!)

13. Put a colorful ribbon on your luggage

If you’re checking luggage, tie a colorful ribbon on the handle of your suitcase to make it stand out so you can find it quickly in the sea of similar luggage on the conveyor belt.

14. Go left at security

Studies have shown that people naturally veer right, so when you reach a security checkpoint, head to the line furthest to the left and you just might save a few minutes waiting in line.

15. Have a designated airplane outfit

Choose a comfortable outfit and make it your designated outfit for air travel. (I always wear leggings, a loose, lightweight hooded sweatshirt, and a coat if I’m going somewhere cold.)

If you have a designated outfit, you won’t be scrambling for something to wear on the day of your flight and you’ll always be comfortable at the airport and on the plane.

16. Invest in Global Entry

Having Global Entry has improved my airport experience a million times over.

If you are a frequent flyer (or even fly just 3-4 times per year) then Global Entry is worth the cost. Global Entry includes TSA Precheck, which allows you to skip the general security line and go through the faster TSA Precheck line (where you don’t have to take off your shoes or take your electronics out of your suitcase.)

When traveling internationally, you can also go through to an expedited customs line upon returning to the US. Global Entry costs $100 and is good for five years. If you just want TSA Precheck, you can get that for $85 and it’s good for five years.

My company paid for my Global Entry, but I would absolutely spend my own money on it. Some travel credit cards will also cover your Global Entry fee.

I hope you enjoyed these helpful airport tips!

Love it or hate it, flying on an airplane is a common part of travel. So, if you have to fly, you might as well make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

We’ve compiled this list of 46 of our best airplane and travel hacks to elevate your flight experience, including everything from flight booking hacks and packing hacks to airport hacks and inflight hacks.

We hope you’ll be able to use some of these flight tricks to make your next travel experience as awesome as possible.

Flight Booking Hacks

A great flight starts with a great booking experience. Try these tricks the next time you have to book a flight.

If you want to find cheap flights , it’s best to be flexible. When your dates aren’t set in stone, you can use the flexible date search option in Google Flights to see what dates offer the cheapest tickets. Just visit Google Flights , enter your origin and destination cities, then click on the travel dates.

Google Flights search

You’ll see the prices for your flight every day on the calendar. Use the trip duration settings at the bottom to choose your desired trip length or play around to see if the trip length affects the ticket price. The lowest-priced tickets will be shown in green.

Google Flights calendar

Another way to keep an eye out for the lowest price tickets is by signing up for flight deal alerts . Websites like Google Flights, Kayak , and Skyscanner allow you to sign up for fare alerts on your chosen route so you know if and when the price drops.

We couldn’t write a flight hack post without mentioning points and miles, could we? Of course not, since that’s our specialty! Using points to book your flight is an easy way to save on the out-of-pocket expense of travel. Plus, using points to book business and first class flights is a great way to make your entire flight experience so much more comfortable than flying in the back of the plane.

Hot Tip: If you’re brand new to the points and miles game, start with our beginner’s guide to bring you up to speed.

Using miles to book a flight is a great way to fly, but finding award availability can sometimes prove to be difficult. If you need help, look at a tool like ExpertFlyer , Award Nexus , or Seat Spy . These websites can help you find award seat availability without spending all day searching.

Whether or not this is your first trip on a specific airline or your fiftieth, sign up for the airline’s frequent flyer program and make sure your frequent flyer number is attached to your reservation. If you never plan on flying the airline again, you can credit the miles you’ll earn to a partner airline.

No one wants to get stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane next to the bathroom, right? That one is obvious, but there are pros and cons to other seats as well.

  • If you get motion sickness, choose a seat over the wing so you’ll feel less turbulence .
  • Choose a seat in front of the plane if you’ve got a short connecting time.
  • If you’re traveling with another person, choose a window and aisle seat toward the back of the plane. Unless the flight is sold out, you’ll have a decent chance that no one will choose the middle seat between you.
  • If you want to sleep during your flight, go with a window seat.
  • If you’re more comfortable having easy access to the bathroom, an aisle seat toward the back of the plane will be your best bet.
  • If you definitely need a small bag with you during the flight, don’t choose a bulkhead seat because they don’t have anywhere to store a carry-on other than the overhead bins.

Use a tool like SeatGuru to find seat maps for your flight, along with notes about the pros and cons of every seat. This website is a must if you want to find the perfect seat on your next flight.

Thankfully, many airlines are offering flexible cancellation and change policies these days, but be sure to read the fine print. These policies often don’t apply to the cheapest basic economy fares. If you want flexibility, you might need to pay a little more upfront.

Packing Hacks

Packing a suitcase is an art, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. These easy packing hacks will help you save space and ensure that you’re prepared for anything.

A packing tip that many can agree on is that packing cubes are a must. These zippered bags come in lots of different sizes and colors to keep your clothes organized. When you arrive at your destination, just move the packing cubes to the drawers, unzip, and you’ve unpacked in an instant.

If you’re packing for multiple people in 1 bag, assign everyone a different color packing cube to keep everything organized.

A large scarf is a versatile item that is the perfect travel accessory. When you pack one in your carry-on bag, you can use it as a blanket to stay warm or for lumbar support to stay comfortable on the plane. Then use it as a scarf in cold weather destinations or as a beach cover-up for tropical vacations.

Picture this: your flight arrives at your vacation destination and you’re so excited to hit the pool at your resort — but your luggage didn’t make it yet! What could be a wasted vacation day for others is no big deal for you because you’re prepared. You packed an extra set of clothes in your carry-on , including important vacation items like a bathing suit, sunscreen, and flip-flops, so you can wait for your delayed luggage while sipping a tropical cocktail by the pool instead of being grumpy in your hotel room in the jeans and sneakers you wore on the plane.

Packing a suitcase

Dry airplane air can easily dehydrate your body. In addition to drinking plenty of water on your flight, don’t forget to pack lip balm and hand lotion in your carry-on bag to combat uncomfortable dry skin. If you typically wear contact lenses, opt for glasses on your flight since the plane’s dry air can make wearing contact lenses uncomfortable.

Make sure your toiletries are in travel-sized containers if you’re planning on using carry-on luggage only. You can invest in a good travel toiletry bag to keep everything organized, or opt for the budget route and put travel-sized containers in a Ziploc bag to keep them from leaking on your clothes.

Pre-flight Hacks

These tricks of the trade are things to think about before you get on your flight.

If you’ll be traveling somewhere where Wi-Fi might be spotty or unavailable, it’s a good idea to download offline maps of the areas you’ll be visiting so you can access them even when you can’t access the internet.

To download a Google Map for use offline, just type in your destination. Then click on the destination name at the bottom of your screen.

How to download Google maps for offline use

Then click on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner and select Download offline map .

Dowload offline map on Google Maps

While many airlines offer inflight entertainment, there’s nothing better than knowing you’ve got plenty of your favorites ready to go. Download podcasts, music, audiobooks, or Netflix shows before you take off to ensure you have plenty to keep you occupied during your flight.

If you’re planning on watching movies or shows on your phone, bring a small stand or mount to set up on your tray table so you don’t have to hold your phone for the whole flight.

Be prepared. Charge all of your electronic devices the day before you leave so they are ready to go for your flight. Keep all of your charging cords handy in your carry-on bag in case you need to charge up at the airport, or bring a portable charger if you think you’ll need more battery power during your flight.

If you’ll be traveling internationally, bring a pen . This will save you from having to rely on your fellow passengers to borrow a pen on the flight to fill out customs forms.

If you’re on a long-haul flight that will be serving a meal and you’ve got dietary restrictions, be sure to order a special meal before your flight. If you wait until you’re on the plane, you’ll be stuck with the standard options.

Flying With Kids Hacks

Flying with kids can be an adventure, but with these pro tips, it will be as stress-free as possible.

Did you know that many airplanes (especially on long-haul international flights) have a few seats that can accommodate a bassinet on board (usually the bulkhead seats)? If you’re flying with a baby , book early and call the airline to reserve one of these seats.

Baby in bassinet on airplane

If you’re a parent, you know that snacks are the answer to about 85% of your kids’ problems. This is no different on a flight. Pack snacks and everything will be okay.

Air pressure changes can affect kids’ ears more than adults’ ears. To help your little one pop their ears, give them a lollipop.

We aren’t saying you should always bribe your kids with new toys, but a long flight is a great time to go ahead and bribe your kids with a new toy ! Having something new will help keep them happy and entertained for longer.

child playing on an airplane

If your child is sitting in the window seat, give them a package of gel window clings to play with, or try an airplane toy for a child’s first flight. The toy itself doesn’t matter as much as the novelty of having a new toy.

If all else fails, or even if you just want to keep things simple, bring a tablet with plenty of shows or games downloaded, along with child-friendly headphones . Most adults use screens for the whole flight, so why not let your kids do the same?

Kids have a ton of energy, and it’s a great idea to get rid of as much of it as possible before you board the plane. Many airports these days have specially designed kids’ play areas for this exact purpose.

Childrens Play Area at MSP Airport

If your airport doesn’t have a play area, take kids on a walk and let them ride the people movers (making sure they don’t get in the way of others trying to quickly make it to their gate, of course). When all else fails, try to find an empty area (the far end of the terminal is probably your best bet) and let them run wild.

Pre-flight Airport Hacks

You can make the time you spend in the airport before your flight as comfortable and stress-free as possible with these airport hacks.

While you think you’ll remember where you parked, it’s not quite so easy to remember after a week-long vacation. To help your memory out, take a picture of your parking space with any recognizable features and the parking row number so you can find your car easily when you return.

Airport parking lot

How would you like to breeze through the TSA security line — without taking your shoes off ? That can all be achieved when you have  TSA PreCheck . This program essentially gives you access to shorter security lines and the ability to pass through without taking your shoes and jacket off and without having to remove your laptop and toiletries from your bag. It’ll save time and hassle each time you fly.

According to the TSA , the majority of TSA PreCheck passengers wait less than 5 minutes in security lines.

Hot Tip: While TSA PreCheck costs $78 for a 5-year membership (and many would argue it’s absolutely worth that price), you can get it for free with many credit cards .

Breeze through the security lines without having to even take your ID out of your wallet. CLEAR is a program that allows you to do just that because it uses biometrics to verify your identity. After your identity is successfully confirmed (through an eye scan), you’ll be escorted to the front of the security line.

CLEAR costs $189 annually and is available in select airports across the country. Several credit cards include a discounted or complimentary CLEAR membership as part of their benefits.

TSA Security Line at Denver International Airport

If you have a choice, choose the security lines to the left — people tend to naturally go right more often than not, so the left lines may be shorter.

Regardless of whether or not you have TSA PreCheck, be ready to get through the security line quickly . Have your ID and boarding pass ready to go — do not wait until you’re at the front of the line to get these things out. If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, make sure you have your liquids and laptop easily accessible so you can remove them quickly without holding up the line.

Hot Tip: Be prepared before your flight. Know what you can and can’t bring through TSA security and check these TSA security FAQs for the answers to some common questions.

Checking your luggage can be expensive these days. While it might be easy to just bring a carry-on bag for some trips, many of us will still need to check a bag from time to time. You can avoid paying crazy baggage fees by choosing an airline that doesn’t charge for bags, like Southwest, by having airline elite status, or by having an airline credit card. Many airline credit cards come with free checked baggage , which can save you lots of money, even if you only fly a couple of times a year.

Buying water in an airport gift shop is expensive and isn’t great for the environment. Instead, bring an empty water bottle through security and then fill it at the filling station or drinking fountain after security. You’ll save money and reduce your plastic usage at the same time.

Airport water filling station

With many of us using fitness trackers and smartwatches these days, getting a recommended number of daily steps or movement time has become commonplace. To balance out sitting on an airplane for hours at a time, take the time before your flight to walk. Getting a few laps in around the terminal before you board your flight is a great way to stay active, even on travel days, and it provides great people-watching, too.

Before you attempt to pack for a week-long trip in 1 carry-on bag, make sure it’s the right size for a carry-on , and make sure you can lift it up to get it in the overhead bin. While other passengers will often offer to help lift heavy bags into the overhead bins, savvy travelers can manage their bags on their own.

Airports are places we all spend a lot of time just waiting. So, next time you fly, plan to wait in style in an airport lounge . Lounges offer quieter places to get work done or to grab a snack and drink before your flight. Some even offer luxury amenities like showers and massages.

Having a Priority Pass membership allows you to access over 1,400 airport lounge locations in over 600 cities across the world. The best part is that there are many credit cards with Priority Pass access.

While it’s not inevitable, sometimes your luggage doesn’t make it onto the same flight as you. When this happens, you’ll most likely need to fill out lost/delayed luggage paperwork that will include an area for you to describe your luggage. A description of “black suitcase” isn’t going to cut it, so make sure you know exactly what your luggage looks like. When in doubt, take a photo of it before you fly, for reference.

Airplane Hacks

We love traveling here at Upgraded Points and have picked up lots of tricks along the way. These airplane hacks will help make your flight as comfortable and as fun as possible.

When choosing a spot for your carry-on bag in the overhead bin, go for the space on the opposite side of your seat, directly across from or slightly in front of your seat (never put your bag behind you). That way you can see your bag from your seat and you’ll easily be able to grab it after the flight without having to wait for the people behind you to deplane before you can grab your bag.

Putting luggage in the overhead bin.

One of the keys to really relaxing and enjoying a flight is the ability to block out airplane noise to enjoy your podcast, music, or movie. Because of that, having noise-canceling headphones is a great way to make your flight more enjoyable.

No, we aren’t suggesting you need to brush your teeth on that quick flight from Chicago to New York City, but brushing your teeth on long-haul flights or flights where you’ll be sleeping can really make a difference in how refreshed you feel. Be sure to pack your toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste (or even a disposable product like Colgate Wisp ), and don’t forget to use bottled water.

While this should come easily to many people, it bears repeating. Be polite and respectful to the flight attendants. They are there to ensure your safety and to help you have a comfortable flight and they deserve your respect. If you’re having a bad flight or don’t like a policy, don’t take it out on them.

If you think you’ll need extra attention from the flight attendants during your trip, consider bringing a small, edible gift like a piece of chocolate or a cookie (prepackaged, store-bought) as a gesture of thanks.

While airplane cleaning standards have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic began, things like tray tables are not necessarily cleaned between each flight. According to Forbes , airplane seatback tray tables are the dirtiest part of the airplane , so be sure to pack some disinfecting wipes and clean your tray table before using it.

Be sure to drink plenty of water during your flight to stay hydrated. While you might not like it, it’s best to avoid alcohol on planes, since it can speed up dehydration and could lead to a fuzzy start to your vacation. It’s also best to avoid carbonated drinks as the bubbles combined with changes in air pressure can cause discomfort for some people.

There’s a definite art to sleeping on a plane, and unless you’re one of those lucky people that can fall asleep anywhere, you’ll need all the help you can get. Use a  sleeping mask and earplugs to block out light and sound, and bring along a comfortable travel pillow to give your head and neck some support. Choosing a window seat can also make sleeping easier since you can lean up against the side of the plane.

Another trick to help you sleep on airplanes is to wear a jacket or sweatshirt with a hood . Putting up the hood will help keep you warm but will also cover your ears and part of your face, giving you more of a sense of comfort and privacy. Some hoods are big enough to pull down to cover your eyes, too.

Airplanes can often be freezing… unless they are way too hot. The problem is, you never know which temperature extreme your plane might suffer from until you are on it, so it’s best to dress in layers so that you’re prepared for anything. Always bring a jacket in the summer and wear a t-shirt under your sweater in the winter.

Hot Tip: If you bring a jacket but don’t need it on the plane, you can roll it up and use it as extra lumbar support.

If you’re wearing sandals on your travel day, bring a pair of socks to wear on the plane. Your feet will stay warm and your seatmate will appreciate not being up close and personal with your bare feet.

If your feet and legs have a tendency to swell, consider bringing compression socks onboard to wear during your flight. They will help reduce fluid retention and swelling, and may even reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Post-flight Airport Hacks

The travel hacks don’t stop when your flight lands. Use these tips to travel like a pro.

Many bags can look the same, so it’s smart to use a unique luggage tag or tie a brightly colored ribbon around your checked bags to make them easily identifiable in the baggage carousel. Alternatively, you can buy luggage in a variety of colors and patterns that are easy to pick out of a crowd.

woman with red suitcase

Did you know that some airlines offer bonus points if your bags are late ?

Delta Air Lines offers the “Bags On Time” guarantee. If your bags take more than 20 minutes to reach the baggage carousel after any domestic flight, you’re eligible for 2,500 bonus miles by completing this form .

Alaska Airlines offers a $25 discount code for future travel or 2,500 bonus miles when your bags take more than 20 minutes to reach the baggage carousel. To make a claim , you need to visit the Alaska Airlines baggage desk at the airport within 2 hours of your flight’s arrival.

If you travel internationally even just once or twice a year, Global Entry can save you tons of time. This program allows members to speed through customs upon re-entry back into the U.S. Instead of waiting in the long customs lines, Global Entry members scan their passports and enter customs information at a kiosk before heading to baggage claim.

Bottom Line: Global Entry is a great program that will help you speed through the airport after international flights. It costs $100 to apply and the membership lasts 5 years. The great news is that many travel rewards credit cards come with a credit for the Global Entry application fee .

If you’ll be taking a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft from the airport, make sure you download the app before you need to use it. It will be easier and quicker to get a ride if your account is already set up, and you’ll have time to see if any of your credit cards offer discounts or bonus points . Be sure to add your credit card to your account and activate any bonus offers, if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best airplane hacks for sleeping.

If you want to sleep on your next flight, here are a few hacks that can help you out:

  • Book a window seat so you can lean on the side of the plane
  • Pack a neck pillow
  • Bring earplugs and a sleeping mask to block out light and sound
  • To stay warm, bring a jacket or large scarf that can be used as a blanket; wearing a hooded sweatshirt or jacket can also help cover your ears and eyes and keep you warm so you can catch some shut-eye

What are the best airplane hacks for toddlers?

If you’re traveling with a toddler, be sure to bring plenty of snacks and things to keep them entertained. A new toy is a great way to keep them occupied as are gel window clings if they’re sitting in the window seat. If all else fails, bring a tablet and kid-friendly headphones to keep them entertained and quiet for the trip.

What are the best airplane hacks for comfort?

There are a few things you can do to make your next airplane flight more comfortable. Wear comfortable clothes in layers so you can adjust based on the temperature of the plane. To help ease back pain, you can use a rolled-up jacket or scarf for extra lumbar support. If you’re wearing sandals, bring socks to keep your feet warm, and consider compression socks for long flights to help reduce swelling.

What are the best airplane hacks for long flights?

To make a long flight more comfortable, try these hacks on your next trip:

  • Wear comfortable clothes that you can sleep in
  • Dress in layers so you never get too cold or too hot
  • Wear compression socks to help reduce swelling
  • Brush your teeth before you go to sleep and once you wake up (but be sure to use bottled water)
  • Download plenty of entertainment before the flight and bring a portable charger so your devices don’t run out of batteries
  • Use airline miles to book a business or first class flight

What are the best packing hacks for flying?

To pack like a pro, you’ll want to follow these simple tips. Keep your luggage organized by using packing cubes. If you’re packing more than 1 person in a single suitcase, get a different color of packing cube for each person to keep everything separated. Use a toiletry bag or a simple Ziploc bag to pack your bathroom essentials. If your products leak, the spill will be confined to the small bag and won’t get all over your clothes. If you’re checking suitcases for vacation, always pack what you’ll need for the first day in your carry-on so you can start your vacation right away, even if your bags are late.

Matching Sets

Enter the travel trend that’s been capturing the hearts of globetrotters and fashion enthusiasts alike: the matching set . Coordinated ensembles, featuring a top and bottom that perfectly complement each other, have become the go-to choice for jet-setters looking to elevate their airport fashion game. But it’s not just about appearances—wearing a matching set while traveling offers a multitude of benefits that go beyond aesthetics.

Not only are you at an optimal comfort level but you also always look effortless while wearing a matching set. There are so many sets on the market these days. You can choose from a knit set, a matching sweat set, or even a short set for those summer months. Pair it with loafers and a classic trench for a polished look. For a casual look pair it with white sneakers and a denim jacket ! Below I’m sharing my top picks at all price points.

MATCHING SET TOP PICKS:

Leggings + Oversized Button-Down

Classic but make it comfy! This dynamic duo not only offers a timeless and polished look but also comes with a range of benefits that make navigating airports, flights, and new destinations a breeze. When it comes to picking out leggings I always have the best luck when purchasing quality over quantity.

For instance, I’ve had my Lululemon leggings for 7 years now and they still look new (wear roughly 1-2 a week). Really. It’s best to invest in pieces you know you will wear over and over. Additionally, I’ve recently fallen in love with the Alo Leggings for travel. And if you’re looking for a pair to hold it all in consider the Spanx leggings . As for the oversized button-down, I tend to find good ones at Zara and H&M since these pieces truly only last a few seasons. Pro tip: size up your button-down for an oversized fit.

MUST-HAVE LEGGINGS:

Knit Joggers + Graphic Tee

This combination airs more on the casual side but is a favorite of mine. This airport outfit is perfect for those red-eye flights since we need all the comfort to help us sleep. Finding the perfect pair of knit joggers is not easy. I’ve added my favorite ones below to help you decide. Furthermore, I always find the best graphic tees at Abercrombie.

Finally, you can pair this look low with slip-on sneakers, a baseball cap , and an oversized jacket to pull it all together. Don’t forget to pack your eye mask to get some shut-eye.

JOGGER PICKS:

Biker Shorts + Crewneck Sweatshirt

A little more on the trendy side but this combo is perfect for those warm summer temps. I’m obsessed with these biker shorts from Alo . They are the best quality and come in over 10 colors. You can easily pair this look with an oversized sweatshirt (blazer if you want to be super on-trend), sneakers , and a baseball cap to pull it all together.

CREWNECK SWEATSHIRT FAVORITES:

Who wants to wear a dress on a plane? Not me! Another easy way to put together a stylish airport outfit without actually trying is to invest in a comfortable jumpsuit. You can easily pair this with cute sneakers , an oversized denim jacket, and a scarf (that doubles as a blanket on the plane) to pull it all together. It may be a bit difficult traveling in a jumpsuit when it comes to using the bathroom, but anything to look cute, right?

JUMPSUIT TOP PICKS:

Airport Outfits Must-Haves

A comfy jacket.

A comfortable jacket , faux leather jacket, or sweatshirt is a must for travel clothes. I tend to stick to a classic denim jacket as it’s so versatile for both the summer and fall. You can always count on airplane cabins to be chilly, so you don’t want to forget this piece when traveling. Also, it can double as a blanket or travel pillow. You sure can get creative on a flight!

Baseball Cap

It’s always smart to have a hat on hand because you never know what kind of bad hair days you will run into when traveling. This is the perfect way to combat those unexpected days and stay incognito on your flight if you don’t want to chat it up with your neighbor.

Comfortable Sneakers

Whenever I’m traveling, I want to be as comfortable as possible since there is usually a lot of walking involved. Skip the heels and opt for a chic pair of comfortable shoes for your trip. You’ll be happy you did!

Airport Accessories Must-Haves

If you’re wondering what kind of accessories to pack for your travel day, I got you covered! Firstly, for those early morning/red-eye flights consider packing cat-eye sunglasses to hide those tired eyes. Next, a good pair of socks to keep your feet warm on the plane. A pair of affordable noise-canceling headphones go a long way in the airport. Finally, I never leave for a trip without my portable backup chargers .

Airport Looks from Amazon

Finally, for my Amazon shopper gals on a budget, I’ve put together a list of airport looks from Amazon. They’re all affordable and I happen to have a couple of these sets myself.

And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all of your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas your next trip.

Sometimes a full on coat is not needed for travel, but you can never be quite sure of the weather. That's why a a little packable shacket—part shirt, part jacket—comes in. In black, olive green, or dark blue, the jacket will be your go-to for travel. Keep in mind, it runs slightly big in order to allow for comfortable layering of hoodies or sweaters underneath. There's a reason why Oprah tapped it on her Favorite Things list .

Elevate Your Airport Look With These Cute but Comfy Travel Outfit Ideas

Kara Blakeslee

The best airport travel outfits start with comfy basics and include smart layers. This foolproof formula will get you to your destination feeling stylish and stress free. From leggings to rompers, we’ve got the best airport travel outfit ideas for your next trip.

If you’re like me, you feel both a mixture of excitement and stress when deciding what to wear to the airport. It’s an important travel outfit that easily can be left to the last minute to plan. To set the scene, you finally finished packing and just as you bring the zipper around each corner a thought stops you—

“What am I wearing to the airport?”

Don’t panic! I’ll let you in on a little secret – there’s a simple formula to planning a great airport outfit. The trick is to start with your base and incorporate versatile layers.

If you have an upcoming trip and aren’t sure what to wear to the airport, this is for you. Plus, since we’re focusing on buildable layers, these outfit ideas can be easily mixed and matched.

My airport travel outfit ideas will get you to your gate feeling comfortable, confident and ready for takeoff.

Comfy, Easy Fabrics Make the Best Airport Travel Outfits

This should not come as a shock as the first tip to keep in mind when planning an airport outfit. It’s safe to say loungewear is a crowd favorite for all things travel. It’s comfy, loose and something you can wear on the plane and throughout your trip.

If you’re about to embark on a long flight , the last thing you want to wear is tight, constricting fabrics. Whether you’re looking for leggings, joggers or biker shorts, the goal is to look for stretchy, lightweight fabrics that have a ‘next to nothing’ feel.

For your t-shirts and long sleeves, you can’t go wrong with cotton. It’s soft and doesn’t wrinkle easily.

Here are my favorite athleisure base layers:

Versatile Layers

Layering can be tricky, especially with limited room in your carry on. You want to have options without being bogged down by bulky items.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when layering your airport travel outfits.

Let’s say you decide to wear something simple like sweatpants, a t-shirt and a hoodie. Your third layer should be something lightweight and not overly fitted. Oversized denim jackets or sweater blazers are great layering pieces. They’re classic staples that easily elevate any comfy airport outfit.

Also, consider investing in a lightweight trench coat for your next trip. They’re timeless and can be styled a variety of ways. The ultimate trendy girl look is a bodysuit, sweatpants and trench coat. Pair with sneakers or slides and you are flying in style.

Lately, I’ve been gravitating toward a sporty, chic airport look. To achieve this, these are my favorite pieces to layer.

Simple Shoes

Have you ever held up the line at security due to unruly shoelaces? If not, you’re one of the lucky ones. If picking out shoes for the airport sends you into panic mode—keep reading.

My biggest tip for footwear is to stick with slip-on shoes like sneakers, loafers or sandals. If you must wear boots, aim for ankle boots that you can easily slide off. For long haul flights, stick a pair of sandals in your tote that you can switch into on the plane.

Rompers & Dresses

We don’t give enough credit to the simplicity, ease and comfort of a romper. If you find yourself feeling uninspired by black leggings, a romper might be for you.

A romper is a fantastic base layer and should be part of everyone’s travel clothes. It’s basically a stylish adult onesie, so it’s no surprise it makes the list of cute airport outfits.

Also, a great alternative to a romper is a lightweight summer dress. This is great for traveling to warmer destinations and shorter flights.

25 Useful Airport Tips for Stress-Free Travel

Does the thought of going through airport security fill you up with anxiety? Maybe it’s sitting through a 16-hour flight (or any hour flight) that gets you sweating? Or does the possibility of your baggage being lost over the course of you checking it in and landing to pick it up raise your blood pressure just a teensy bit?

I’ve been there.

But I’ve also picked up tips that have helped me reduce my travel anxiety over time and you’ll be able to read all about them here.

In this post, you’ll find 25 airport tips to check off before sitting down to enjoy the beautiful scenery you’ve been craving since you bought that plane ticket.

Airport Tips Before Leaving Your House

1. choose your luggage.

Depending on the length of your visit, you can pack a carry-on bag or check-in luggage . I personally have mastered traveling with a backpack for all lengths of trips so I carry on my bags every time.

You can read more about that here if that’s something you also aspire to do.

Carry-on bags can range from a backpack to a small rolling case; some would also consider this a weekend bag.

With a carry-on, you can bring them on board with you and place them under the seat in front of you or in the cabin space above, which will save you time when you land.

Check-in luggage is usually bigger in size and checked before you go through the security check. This is a great option if you are packing for a lengthy trip with larger liquids and items that can’t go through the security check.

2. Check (and Pack) Important Documents

Check, and double-check your passport (or identification document) before departure. If you are traveling internationally, your passport’s expiration date cannot be within 3 months of your travel date.

You will not be able to enter a country without it and you won’t be able to leave either. Make sure to not overstay your visa as well.

Check the dates and times of your flight. Keep in mind that all flights are listed for local time. This is important information if you have a layover, especially over a time difference (i.e flying from CA to FL with a layover in CO) as it can cause trouble with the timing.

Lastly, check the airports. In some cases, like Chicago, there may be more than one airport so you want to make sure that you’re headed to the right one.

Pack electronics in your carry-on or personal bag.

3. Packing electronics

Laptops, tablets, smartphones, and all batteries (including portable ones) need to be packed in your personal bag or carry-on. Make sure they are all easily accessible as electronics will most likely need to be taken out and put in the bins.

How you pack will help speed up your time at the security checkpoint.

4. Packing Liquids

Bottom line, all liquids must be in 3oz. containers and packaged nicely into a quarter-sized ziplock bag.

For frequent travelers, pick up the refillable travel-sized bottles to save money. Local grocery stores also have ready-to-go bottles as well if you’d rather save time.

When it comes to make-up, scale down so your liquid makeup can also fit in the slowly shrinking quart-sized ziplock bag.

Side Story: While still living in China and on my trip through the London airport, the TSA lady claimed that my mascara was a liquid—which had never occurred to any other country before—so I had to throw out my lotion (China bought) and my conditioner (also China bought) so that I could keep my mascara (American bought) .

Moral of the story: pack only what you need and will use.

5. Packing Food

If you have a very early morning flight or are catching a red-eye flight, restaurants and snack shops within the airport may not be open.

You can bring your own food through security, as long as it’s sealed. For domestic travel, fruit is fine in your carry-on.

It’s also important to mention medication. Pack your prescribed medication. Other medications include tums, digestives, laxatives, and painkillers.

You can decide how to pack your meds, but you don’t have to take the whole bottle with you.

I’ve noticed that activated charcoal helps with stomach issues, so I tend to pack a few of those too just in case I meet a meal of food poisoning eating street food (or something).

6. Packing Clothes

Do not overpack your luggage.

If you’re anything like me, you like to do a little shopping in your destination city. Some countries like those in Southeast Asia will have night markets with very affordable (and cute) clothing, accessories, and shoes. Save some space for local pieces.

So to pack lighter, mix and match your tops and bottoms. Estimate about 4-5 tops and 2-3 bottoms, possibly including a dress, and 1-2 pairs of shoes for about a week’s worth of travel. I like to call it a travel capsule wardrobe .

7. Check-In for Your Flight

These days, flights allow passengers to c heck in 24 hours before departure time. This means that you can check into your flight, pay for any check-in luggage you may have, and download your mobile ticket.

You can also print them off at home as well if you prefer a physical copy.

When you get to the airport, you can get in line to print out your baggage sticker or head straight to the security checkpoint.

Airport Tips for Check-In and Baggage Drop

8. flight confirmation at the kiosks.

If you forget to check in the 24 hours before your flight, have no fear! You can also check-in at the ticketing area, usually at the kiosks or at the desks, depending on the airline. Make sure you have your confirmation number and ID ready to show.

9. Baggage Drop

If you see kiosks for your airline, you’ll need to get in that line and type in your confirmation number to print out your baggage tag. Once you stick this on your bag, you’re ready to head to the belt area and check the weight. Keep in mind that check-in baggage is limited to 50 pounds.

Airport Tips to Get Through Security Faster

airport tips - passport and ticket in hand

10. Scan the Security Lines

Do a quick scan of the security lines. Head towards the left side of the lanes (as many tend to head right) and find individuals or couples to stand behind.

Usually, big groups or parents with small children will take a little longer to get through the security identification.

11. Have Your Identification Ready

Have your ticket and identification ready and in hand. If you are wearing glasses, take them off as you hand your information to the TSA agent.

As an international traveler, I prefer showing my passport but I think it’s important to have 2 forms of identification for domestic traveling as well. After showing your ID, tuck it and your ticket into an easily reachable pocket of your carry-on so you don’t lose it, but you can still reach it if they ask for it again.

12. Your Airport Outfit

Your airport outfit is 1/2 of what makes or breaks your time at the security area.

To get through quickly, wear slip-on slip-off shoes and low-maintenance clothes. Belts, things in pockets, and hats can slow down your walk through the metal detector if you forget to remove something.

My airport outfit is usually leggings, with one pocket, a zip-up hoodie for easy removal, a loose shirt, and my Bobs shoes . Before I arrive at the airport, I’ll make sure the only thing in my pocket is my phone.

I’ll remove my watch and stash my wallet in my carry-on.

13. What Goes in the Bins

How you pack your carry-on is the other 1/2 of what makes or breaks your time at the security area.

Airports are not all in sync when it comes to things in the bins. Some require shoes, and some don’t. Others want all your things in bins, while some say to just lay it on the belt. I’ve also encountered security checks where I didn’t even need to remove my liquids.

When you get past the identification check, make sure to grab at least 2 bins .

Pack your electronics in an easy-to-reach place so you can easily take them out for times such as this. For my backpack, I usually have my laptop in the electronics slot along the back.

All electronics bigger than a smartphone will be in their own bin. I usually take these out first.

Next, liquids are always on top of my bag–it should be the last thing you pack in your carry-on (besides your passport!). Sometimes, they’ll also ask you to remove any food items as well.

After that, remove the outer layers and shoes to be placed into the same bin. This whole process should take 2 minutes at the most and you will usually have time to push your items through the metal tunnel.

14. Smile and be Polite

Always be polite. And give grace.

Keep in mind that they are working with thousands of people every day. Your smile can make a difference and help you get through quicker too.

Airport Tips While Waiting at Your Gate

airport tips - choose a seat next to an outlet and the kiosk

15. Where to Sit

When finding your gate, you can locate it on your plane ticket or on the computer monitors usually lining the hallways after security.

When you get to your gate, double-check the monitor to ensure that it’s the destination you’re looking for and the flight number matches your ticket. Sometimes gates change while you’re going through security.

Find a spot where you can easily see the monitors in case they change during your waiting time. I also like to find a seat with an outlet to get my last-minute charges (or if I have a long wait time).

16. Plan Your Bathroom Trips

I’m not too big on public bathrooms, but I would prefer the airport ones to the airplane ones. If you grab a coffee or water, make sure to use the bathroom before you board the plane, especially if you have a long flight.

If I do use the bathroom, I usually go about 5-10 minutes before boarding time, just to make sure I’m back in time before they make any important announcements.

airport tips - plan your bathroom trip accordingly

17. Fill Up on Water and Snacks

After security, you will be able to fill up your water bottle or purchase one at the airport and bring it with you on the plane. You can also pick up a Starbucks blueberry scone or a bag of Cheetos too (at least those are my go-to’s).

18. Boarding Time

Airlines usually have a way they like to board people. Follow your boarding “zone” or “group.” And if you’re towards the end of boarding, be patient.

Waiting at or near your seat can decrease confusion during boarding time–all this said with grace as I’ve been one to jump up and wait by the lines when they start boarding time.

My tickets usually tell me I’m at the end of boarding.

In-Flight Tips

19. entertainment.

Download your entertainment beforehand. Go to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, whichever platform you use, and get all the episodes you’ve been saving up for a nice, long plane ride.

After that, download all the music you like to listen to. My favorite is going on Spotify and finding curated playlists of all my favorite genres. This way I can still hear new music while in flight.

Then, for you bookworms download your top 2-5 books on your to-read list. I recommend digital books because it saves space in your carry-on. But I’ve known people to bring a book or two and some magazines to flip through as well.

Lastly, download some games you might play. My favorite go-to’s are Sudoku and Cube block.

I like to have a variety of things to do because it helps me rotate throughout the plane ride, especially if I’m on a long-haul flight.

20. Sleeping

If I’m not being entertained by all my gadgets and books, then I’ll be found sleeping. Personally, I can fall asleep anywhere anytime, and if it’s a moving vehicle I will be out very soon.

I know it may be harder for some to fall asleep on planes. Here are some things that have helped: a sleeping pillow, calm music, or small dosages of melatonin – research this for your unique situation.

21. Turbulence

Turbulence is a scary time when the plane comes into contact with some crazy wind, which then causes the plane to shake and make lots of noise.

However, do know that your pilot is not afraid of turbulence, even though it may cause anxiety in passengers. Don’t believe me? Read more about pilots and turbulence .

There are several steps you can take to combat your fear while in the air: taking deep breaths, listening to music, meditation, medication, and if anxiety is severe, therapy. Take care of your mind so you can beat anxiety in flight.

22. Touch Down

It takes about 30 minutes to touch down from when the captain makes his announcement. At this point—clean up, and use the bathroom if you need to, but settle into your seatbelt for the turbulence (if any) and the landing strip.

Hold on tight—if it’s your first ride, the jolt might give you a small surprise. But you’ll land, the plane will slow down, and you’ll reach your gate in no time.

Airport Tips at Your Destination Airport

23. Find Your Luggage

Usually, the flight attendants will give an upbeat talk about how great it is that you’re flying with them, tell you about the current time and temperature, and also mention the carousel number where you can find your checked-in baggage.

If that doesn’t happen, you can check your airline’s mobile app or the monitors on your way out of the deboarding area.

If your luggage is lost (fingers-crossed that this doesn’t happen!), then you’ll need to go to the airport baggage workers and file your claim immediately.

Don’t worry—it won’t be lost forever. You will get it back, even if it’s a day or more late. You can also ask if the airline will send someone out to deliver your luggage, too to your home address.

airport tips - follow the signs to get where you need to go

24. Navigate the New Airport

From here, follow the signs. Find the bathroom. If you’re hungry and you don’t know where you’re headed, now is the time to find some food.

If you rented a car, some airports will have a rental kiosk right by the baggage claim. Others will be a walk right outside the doors or have you ride a bus or shuttle to the rental area.

For Uber, Lyft, or taxis, there is usually a separate lane for pick-up cars. And public transport such as busses or trains will have their own directions as well.

25. Transportation

Wherever you’re headed make sure your mode of transport is the most cost-effective and reliable.

Here are a few methods of transport:

  • Friend (or friend of a friend):  Yay! It’s good to know people in the area.
  • Hotel/Hostel/AirBnb pick-up:  check in with your accommodations. Sometimes, they’ll have their own special airport shuttle or better directions so you can get to your destination as efficiently and as straightforward as possible.
  • Airport Shuttle: If the airport provides a shuttle for your hotel, take it. It might cost a few dollars, but it is reliable.
  • Rental car: If you chose to rent a car, follow the signs to get to the rental car kiosks and pick up your car.
  • Uber/Lyft: Uber and Lyft are now dependable car services. Download their apps and find a driver near you (or the equivalent in the place you’ve landed).
  • Taxi: Taxis are usually my second to last resort. Mainly because the prices are super inflated, and your taxi driver may not be the most personable. In my experience, taxi drivers are also not the most reliable.
  • Private car for hire: My last resort because of the high costs. It could be anywhere from $100-$200 to request a private car from the airport to take you to town.

As far as glamorous travel goes, Jackie O. set the bar high. Let's face it, the former first lady rarely looked anything other than immaculate. Take cues from the timeless classic look that is as easy to wear as it is easy to look put together as you stroll through the airport. A matching ladylike twill jacket and miniskirt paired with classic flats (perfect for sliding on and off at security) and a structured handbag will never fail you. Pro tip: bring a travel throw to ensure you're not nippy on the flight .

Leggings? No way. Jeans are the perfect in-flight option. And no, surely they don't have to be skin tight. With a nipped high-waist and tapered leg, all you need is a belt and a good button down shirt for the base layer of the outfit. All you need is a blazer and contemporary accessories, like a trendy bucket hat and the ole faithful converse high-tops.

The internationally acclaimed human rights lawyer is often pictured heading to-and-from major cases, but never misses an opportunity to infuse a little sartorial joy into the picture. The Best Travel Outfits for Plane Rides, Road Trips, and More

Dress for the journey as much as the destination.

airport travel ideas

In This Article

Some of us may be quite rusty when it comes to savvy travel planning. Before we all spent an extended stretch stuck at home, many of us were able to skillfully pack a tote for a weekend getaway in eight minutes flat, remembering every essential without overstuffing. But this year, the task may feel a bit more foreign as we head into the summer with (hopefully) a few more plans to get out of town than we've had in a while. There’s also the matter of the travel outfit, a look that shouldn’t merely be an afterthought compared to everything else you're bringing on vacation—after all, you'll be wearing it for a long stretch of time and may even want something you can wear for your first activities the moment you arrive.

Whether you’re leaving for a two-hour flight or a 20-hour road trip, travel outfits should tick all the boxes: they’re comfortable, practical, and complement the rest of what you’re bringing for your final destination. This means matching sets you can break up and style into separate outfits later, light layers that work for air-conditioned train compartments and post-sunset beach strolls alike, and even swimsuits that can double as bodysuits.

Read on to find the 15 best travel outfit ideas as you plan your next departure.

The Jumpsuit

Design by Tiana Crispino

Keep travel simple with one of Alex Mill’s jumpsuits—this terry style feels especially summer-ready—and a cozy pair of socks. These Comrad ones are compression socks, ideal for extra-long flights.

The button-front dress.

To build the perfect travel outfit, choose versatile pieces. This button-front dress can serve as a comfortable en-route look, a beach cover-up, a long, layered top over denim, and more.

The Jeans and Tee

For a not-so-standard jeans-and-tee ensemble, opt for wide-leg denim and a fun, functional pair of sandals that you can keep wearing once you reach any beach destination.

The Standard Stitch

LoveShackFancy x Manebi

The Cardigan

Get vacation started early by wearing your favorite summer dress for the journey. Layer on a sweater for any blasting AC you might encounter while en route.

Matteau + Net Sustain

The Polished Athleisure

Keep things sporty and sleek with a travel outfit combination of bike shorts, sneakers, and a tailored blazer . These are three versatile items you can always restyle over the course of your vacation.

Frankie Shop

The Coordinating Sweats

When it comes to travel outfits, you can't get comfier than sweats, and a coordinating set allows you to look stylish with no fuss whatsoever, even if you take a mid-journey nap.

The Swimsuit-As-Bodysuit

A trick to piecing together a great travel look is to use items you were going to pack for vacation anyway, such as a swimsuit . Style this one-piece as if it were a bodysuit and use a colorful oversized tote as your carry-on.

The Travel Wrap

We swear by a cashmere travel wrap in any season, as it can double as a blanket, scarf, sweater, or whatever you need it for. Style this one with a graphic tee and jeans for your next plane ride.

White + Warren

The Classic Button-Down

We always travel with a classic, button-down shirt that can be worn as is, tied up with a skirt, or draped over a swimsuit as a cover-up. Make even more use of the versatile piece by wearing it with shorts and a bucket hat as you head to your getaway.

Frank & Eileen

The Loose-Fit Dress

A printed dress that barely touches your body is a summertime essential, and that’s especially true for any long days of travel. Just add sneakers and a statement mask.

The Maxi Dress

Pair a maxi dress with a timeless denim jacket. This creates an effortlessly put-together look, even if you only have 30 seconds to toss it on before running to catch an early morning flight.

Zelie for She

Violeta by Mango

Arlo Skye x Dusen Dusen

The Light Layers

Pack with light layers in mind, such as with this "shacket" ensemble. This will come in handy when the summer temperature drops after sunset.

The Beach-Ready Look

A quick jaunt to a nearby coastal town calls for a travel outfit that can go directly from the car to your beach towel. Accomplish this by throwing some summery trousers over your swimsuit , then complete the look with a basket bag.

Dodo Bar Or

The Knit Set

Another stylish option when you'd prefer sophisticated loungewear is a knit set. Once you reach your vacation spot, the pieces can separately be styled into tons of other ensembles, as well.

Selva Negra

Dear Frances

The Trench Coat

If you’re drawn to truly classic pieces, the trench coat is a perfect layer for the road. Dress it down with cozy leggings and an oversize tote.

Creating Chic Travel Outfits

Who doesn’t love going on vacation and traveling to a new destination? I know I definitely do!

But while I love exploring new places, I also know that travel days can be pretty hectic! It’s important to be prepared with comfortable outfits you can easily spend the day in while navigating airports or sitting in rental cars.

If you’re in need of fashionable and functional travel outfits, you’ll love my looks below. I have airport outfits for every style and season, so whether you’re traveling to a tropical paradise or a winter wonderland, you’ll be set!

denim jacket + a puffer vest

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white tee, a blue denim jacket, and a black puffer vest with adidas samba sneakers and a black crossbody bag

get the look:

Layers are a must if you’re traveling in the fall or winter! I love starting my travel ensemble with basics like my Lululemon Align leggings and oversized Jil Sander tee (more affordable option here ) , then layering as needed.

Above, I added my Madewell denim jacket and Quince puffer vest to keep me warm and cozy both on and off the plane!

leggings+ a bomber jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white graphic tee, a grey jacket, and black sneakers

An oversized tee and black leggings are the start of my airport outfit here as well, but this time, I’m staying warm with a sleek and modern bomber jacket .

I recommend choosing an outfit like this when it’s a little warmer out. The jacket is perfect for staying warm in a cold airport but can easily be removed as needed. And, these New Balance 574 sneakers are so comfortable!

linen pants + a denim jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants, a white tee, a denim jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a tan leather crossbody

Drawstring linen pants are an absolute essential in my spring and summer wardrobe! They are so comfortable and easy to wear during a travel day, and the denim jacket is stylish and adds a layer of warmth – airplane AC is always so intense!

I love this Quince phone crossbody  for convenience (it fits a passport too) . And I always recommend wearing sneakers or other comfy footwear when traveling – bonus points if your shoes can be easily slipped off and on when going through security!

wool coat + Ugg slippers

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a brown wool coat, and Ugg slippers

Looking for the ultimate cozy travel outfit?

Leggings and Ugg Tasman slippers are definitely my go-to for comfort in the cooler months (the Uggs have been selling out constantly, so here’s a perfect high-quality Tasman dupe ) . And a long wool camel coat is not only chic but also perfect for layering – it doubles as a blanket on the plane!

I also love this long knitted coatigan from Mango as a great travel piece.

travel in neutrals

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants and a white tee with a black sweater draped over her shoulders, grey and white sneakers, and a black crossbody bag

I love simple, neutral outfits because they always look effortless and stylish. A plain white tee and black linen drawstring pants are ultra-comfy but still have a chic, put-together aesthetic.

This outfit is great for summer traveling, but I always bring a sweater with me so I don’t get too cold on the plane.

bomber jacket + joggers

A woman at the airport wearing black joggers, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a great jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a baseball cap and a black crossbody bag

This is another cold-weather travel outfit that I love! Lululemon fleece joggers and a crewneck sweatshirt are great base layers and the bomber jacket adds an extra cozy feel.

And if you ask me, this ensemble has a laid-back, sporty feel, making adidas Samba sneakers and a baseball cap the perfect finishing touch!

More Comfy Airport Outfits

I’ve stalked my favorite fashion influencer and have found even more comfy travel airports that are modern and chic. I think you’ll love them too!

trench coat + trousers

A woman ready to go to the airport wearing black pants, a classic trench coat, and converse sneakers

You don’t have to be traveling to France to dress like a Parisian while on vacation!

A trench coat is a classic piece in French fashion, and with good reason. It’s lightweight, versatile, and oh-so chic – what more could you want for an airport outfit?

I recommend using a trench coat to layer over other pieces when traveling in cold weather or to stay dry while out and about on rainy days. A trench coat can also be used for a modern and refined look, making it perfect for any occasion!

matching sweat set

A woman ready for the airport wearing a grey matching sweat suit set, a trench coat, and trainers

I think a matching sweatsuit set makes a perfect travel outfit because it’s comfortable and versatile. You can wear a sweatsuit set to stay warm while traveling in the fall or winter, and you can wear it as is or add layers if needed.

And I love that you can double up on a matching set by using it to build other outfits during your trip.

try (comfortable) denim

A woman at the airport with ripped blue jeans, white sneakers, and a white sweater

Jeans are a must to bring along when traveling, and you can’t go wrong wearing it as part of your airport outfit, so long as your jeans are comfortable and not too snug !

One thing I love about jeans is how easy they are to care for. Jeans can be worn days in a row before needing to be washed (especially in cold weather) , so being a low-maintenance and versatile piece makes them great for traveling in my opinion.

cozy shearling coat

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a white coat with black Chanel boots and a pink beanie

A warm coat will keep you ultra-comfy as you fly. And if you ask me, a shearling coat or shacket is a travel piece you can’t go wrong with! This piece will keep you warm even on the coldest days, and it’s also fashionable and versatile enough to wear with so many outfits.

Such a chic and neutral-toned coat is a must if you’re traveling to or from somewhere chilly. And this coat will look great while keeping you cozy everywhere from the airplane to local cafes to must-see landmarks!

leggings + a denim jacket

A woman with luggage wearing black leggings and a grey hoodie with an oversized denim jacket and white sneakers

If you want to know one of the best things to wear while traveling, look no further than a classic pair of leggings.

Comfortable and stretchy leggings are a perfect piece to wear, whether you’ll be walking through an airport or sitting on a plane. I suggest searching for a pair made of breathable material and one with pockets for easy access to your phone and other essentials.

a long, cozy coat

A woman at the airport with olive green leggings, sweater, and baseball cap with a long white coat and white trainers

If you plan on traveling in the fall or winter ( or maybe your destination will have chilly weather ), bringing a coat is a no-brainer. And I think a long coat like this is an easy way to add a stylish and modern aesthetic to your outfits.

A piece like this will keep you nice and cozy during a busy day of traveling, and you’re sure to use it when trying local cuisine or attending a wine tasting. I love that it adds an elegant touch to a simple outfit like this, so you know you can pair this with any look, both casual and refined.

What should I wear to an airport in the summertime?

If you’ll be spending time at the airport in the summer, you will want an outfit that is both comfortable and cool. Choose lightweight and breathable pieces such as:

  • Short-sleeved tee or tank top
  • Lightweight leggings
  • Flowy dress
  • Midi or  maxi skirt
  • Cotton button-up shirt
  • Linen blazer
  • Sandals  or sneakers

Comfy Airport Outfits for Summer

There are tons of cute airport outfits that are perfect for hot summer days. I’ve got my favorite comfy airport outfits for summer below, so you don’t have to sweat it when packing or traveling!

a maxi dress

A woman at the airport with a flowing black floral maxi dress and chunky white sneakers

What would the summer be without gorgeous flowy dresses to spend your days in? This breezy piece will keep you comfy and cool throughout your day, and it will definitely be comfortable to wear while sitting on a plane.

And in my opinion, a dress is a great piece to bring along on your vacation. You can style it casually as you travel or when checking out local spots at your destination, and it can easily be transformed into a chic date night look with a high-end handbag and some gold-toned jewelry.

linen trousers + a tank

A woman holding luggage wearing pleated white pants, a striped tank top, and a sweater tied over her shoulders

Next on the list of comfy airport outfits for summer are flowy, linen pants. These are another fantastic travel piece you can wear for any occasion, from laid-back to classy and refined. So whether you plan on exploring tourist hot spots or dining on gourmet cuisine, these pants will fit into your vacation looks effortlessly.

I also think that crisp light-colored pants are perfect for a summer outfit, and the relaxed fit also makes them comfy enough for long travel days. They’ll fit easily into your luggage, and these lightweight trousers will definitely be a staple in your vacation wardrobe.

oversized blazer + bike shorts

A woman with luggage wearing black running shorts, a white crop top, a camel blazer, and white trainers

I know I’m not the only one who loves layering an oversized blazer over any outfit!

Adding a blazer to an outfit is a great way to elevate your look when it comes to comfy airport outfits for summer. A blazer instantly adds a stylish and modern vibe to any ensemble, so it’s a perfect styling piece to bring while traveling.

oversized button-up

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a black crop top with a white button-up and black sandals

Cotton button-up shirts are a great way to feel comfortable and look chic in the summer. I suggest wearing this versatile piece over a crop top and black leggings, like in the outfit above, or keep it buttoned and tied in the front for a cute and casual aesthetic.

A button-up shirt is also another perfectly versatile piece for an airport outfit. I love that you can wear it out for a fancy dinner, pair it with jeans for a casual look, or layer it over a bikini during a tropical vacation.

matching skirt + tank

A woman with a dark tan maxi skirt, matching top, a white blazer, and white sandals at the airport

Go for maximum comfort and style in a stretchy, ribbed midi skirt and a matching top! A skirt and top set like this are lightweight and breezy but still offer plenty of coverage while traveling.

You’ll also have a perfect piece to wear for anything from sightseeing to a night out. And, my favorite thing about a matching set is that it can be kept together or mixed and matched with other pieces in your travel wardrobe. So you’ll have plenty of outfit options to choose from while on vacation.

bike shorts + hoodie

A woman with pink running shorts, hoodie, and baseball cap with white sneakers and a luggage set

In my opinion, running shorts and a hoodie are great for casual and comfy airport outfits. The biking shorts are very travel-friendly since they’re easy to spend a whole day in and won’t take up much space in your bag. Plus, you can wear them as part of other laid-back outfits or if you plan to stay on top of your workout routine on your trip.

Comfy Airport Outfit Ideas

Comfy Airport Outfits

Looking for your next cute and comfy airport outfits for your next getaway? This post has you covered.

As a full-time travel blogger, I am always on the go and always looking for chic yet comfortable travel outfits that I can wear for even the longest flights.

I’ve tested out wearing numerous things and have put together my favorite cute airport outfits, and travel outfit ideas and inspiration for your next trip.

Let’s connect on social:  Youtube |  Instagram  |  Tiktok

AirEssentials Set

If you’re looking for comfy- look no further than this AirEssentials Set from Spanx. I tried this set in black last year, and I literally only wore this on all of my flights. This year they added even more colors!

comfy travel outfits

The material is buttery soft and lightweight but still adds warmth. You won’t get overheated on your flight or have any unnecessary sweats when wearing this. I’ve washed mine plenty of times and it still looks brand new. I couldn’t recommend this enough for any airplane outfit.

And, this set has made the “Oprah’s Favorite Things” list for 2023!

PS. Spanx has given my readers 10% off any order with code: DANAXSPANX

A great pair of leggings will pull together plenty of cute airport outfits.  I love these best-selling leggings from Amazon (comparable to the Lululemon align leggings).

They are buttery soft and comfortable for the longest flights, and they come in so many different colors.

Airport outfit leggings

If leggings aren’t your thing, I also recommend these loose-fitting yoga pants from Amazon for long flights. They have pockets and are incredibly comfortable to wear because the waistband is super stretchy and the material is buttery soft.

I recommend getting these in darker colors as they tend to pile after a few washes, but nonetheless, I still love them!

wide leg leggings

Camel on Camel

I love this color combination because it looks super chic, and you can easily recreate this airport style. Just grab your favorite neutral set and pair it with your favorite sunglasses, and sneakers for a casual yet comfy airport outfit.

Amazon Airport Outfit Idea

A blazer is a great way to dress up your airport outfit, especially if you are on a business trip. But you can still keep it comfy by wearing your blazer over your favorite sweater and leggings.

I love this combination because you can wear your blazer on your trip to save room in your luggage.

This oversized blazer from Amazon has been my go-to, and I’m going to style this at the airport soon. Size up for a looser fit.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Wearing trousers to the airport is a great way to look elevated, yet stay comfortable on a flight. Get a pair with some stretch to them so they move with your body. Plus if you have a meeting as soon as you land, you’ll just look more put together.

I personally love these trousers from Amazon . They have a cropped ankle and loose fit around the hips! (I own them in 2 colors and I would absolutely wear them on a plane)

Amazon Airport Outfit

I know this post is all about comfy airport outfits, but denim can be a great piece to style your travel outfit. Opt for denim if you have a shorter flight, or want to hit the ground running sightseeing.

Tip: Look for denim that has some stretch to it so you can easily sit and be comfortable. Avoid any rigid 100% cotton denim that offers no stretch.

comfy airport outfits

Pair a comfortable pullover sweater, or comfy cardigan for a chic airport travel outfit.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Pairing an oversized teddy coat is a perfect winter airport outfit. It will definitely keep you warm and will be great if you are flying to a cold destination.

Pair your teddy with either a sweater or chic sweatpants for an effortless look!

Puffer Vest

Another winter airport outfit is adding a puffer vest . I love this because you can easily take it on or off and adds warmth when you need it. Underneath you can add a long sleeve top and your favorite bottoms for an overall chic look.

Airport Outfit Idea

A comfy black jumpsuit is a chic and simple summer airport outfit idea. You can style the jumpsuit so many different ways: denim jacket, coat, sweater, etc. And it’s easy because it’s only one piece. No need to worry about matching a top or bottom.

This amazon black jumpsuit i s a best seller and is perfect for any plane journey.

My only gripe with a jumpsuit is the bathroom situation. You’ll have to pull down your entire top to use the restroom- which can be annoying if you tend to go more often.

comfy airport outfits

Sweatpants and Tank Top

Pairing your favorite tank with these baggy-style sweatpants is an effortless comfortable summer airport outfit! Plus you can always add layers over your tank with a jacket or sweater.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Cashmere Travel Wrap

A travel wrap is one of my go-to items when traveling because you can wear it as a scarf, as a blanket, or over your shoulders. The cashmere is so lightweight, breathable, soft, and warm! Plus, it has a chic look to it.

While a pure cashmere travel wrap is on the pricier side, I’ve been using the same one for over 3 years from White & Warren .

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly alternative, J.Crew has a similar style.

Cashmere Travel Wrap

Cashmere Knit Set

For the ultimate comfort, you can wrap your whole body in a sophisticated cashmere set. Cashmere is such a breathable lightweight material, that is perfect for flying.

This cashmere set is a splurge, so if you want the overall feel of cashmere, I’d recommend going for the cashmere wrap above.

comfy airport outfits

Pullover Sweater

You can totally wear your favorite activewear on the plane. Pair your favorite colored leggings with a similar color sweater for an easy effortless airport style.

Comfy Airport Outfits

It’s a coat, and it’s a cardigan, meet the coatagin. This is essentially a cardigan but it has more weight to it, so it’s a bit warmer and acts like a coat. This is great for any fall or winter travel where your destination is a sunny place. You can take off your layers and arrive in style.

This exact coatagin is from Amazon , and while on the pricer side for Amazon- the quality is there and I love the color.

J.Crew also has a similar style sweater blazer in pretty neutral colors.

Comfy Travel Outfits

Black on Black

As a New Yorker, all black everything is my motto. This is a perfect example of comfy airport outfits. Plus I’m sure you have a black sweatshirt and black sweatpants at home.

Add a baseball hat, bag, and sunglasses to style this look and make it effortlessly chic.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Bike shorts and a sweatshirt are great summer airport outfits.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Faux Leather Leggings

I could go on and on about faux leather leggings for airport outfits because they have the comfort of a legging, but they make any outfit look really put together.

I paired my faux leather leggings with my favorite Spanx AirEssentials zip hoodie below.

Long Cardigan

A long cardigan acts both as a sweater, plus the extra fabric can be wrapped around your body for extra warmth. Amazon has plenty of affordable long cardigans that make for a great travel outfit.

Plus you can wear them on your trip, which saves room in your suitcase.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Leather Jacket

A leather jacket adds plenty of style and comfort when traveling. It’s a versatile piece that can be worn with jeans or comfy sweats but still dresses up your look.

I love my leather Madewell jacket, it’s buttery soft, and comfortable which is the perfect travel accessory.

comfy airport outfits

Striped Shirt

Add a little nautical feel with a striped top. I usually tend to gravitate toward solid colors while traveling, but a stripe really adds style, and makes your whole outfit cohesive!

Comfy Airport Outfits

A beautiful winter airport outfit is a statement camel coat. You can wear this over anything- you’re favorite sweats if you’re going for comfort or a nice trouser for a business flight.

Comfy Airport Outfits

Business Chic

If you’re flying for business, these outfits are perfect for comfort and style. A chunky sweater with comfortable trousers is a great business chic look.

I’ve been living in my Abercrombie Trousers this fall, and they are soft enough to travel in.

comfy airport outfits

Add a statement long cardigan for another chic business travel outfit.

Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is a great piece for a cute summer airport outfit because it’s not too warm, and you can wear it over a tank top in the heat! Plus you can tie this around your waist if it gets too warm.

White Sneakers

I almost always wear my Adidas Advantage sneakers while traveling. They are super comfortable and under $60 on Amazon!

Adding a pair of sunglasses adds a chic look to your travel outfit. Plus, you can say goodbye to eye makeup!

These are so handy when traveling because you can keep your important documents, credit cards, cash, and ID in a safe and easily accessible place.

Amazon has a great affordable belt bag that comes in multiple colors.

Amazon Belt Bag

Airport Outfit Undergarments

Just because you can’t see your undergarments, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about them.

A comfortable bra is a must for any travel day. I always gravitate toward this unlined bralette that is so soft it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing any bra. And as someone with a larger chest is a huge plus.

And for a no-show panty line, comfortable underwear is a must. I’ve tried a few different styles, and this mesh thong set is my go-to! They stretch to your body without causing any unwanted tugging.

Airport Outfit Luggage

Now you don’t have to go out and buy all new luggage, but I believe that having a neutral luggage set will always look put together!

I prefer traveling with a carry-on rolling luggage to put in the airplane bin above my seat, and a small duffle or backpack that goes under the seat in front of me.

Travel Backpack for women

This backpack is made for travel and is perfect if you’re looking to just bring carry-on luggage and have a bag that can fit extra clothing inside. This travel backpack features a large compartment that fits extra clothing perfectly. Plus it’s lightweight and comes in neutral colors.

weekender bag on Amazon

Another favorite carry-on bag that fits under the seat in front of you is this black Weekender bag on Amazon . I’ve brought this on all my travels this year and fits everything you’d need on hand on the plane, plus extra clothing.

The zippers on this bag just make sense, and there is a place for everything- including 2 exterior pockets water bottles, and an interior laptop sleeve.

Travel Pro Carry On Suitcase

And my go-to carry-on suitcase that is extremely lightweight and expandable. I’ve been traveling with this Travel Pro Maxlite suitcase for a while and it’s held up from all my trips! Plus it’s the preferred suitcase from flight attendants.

Bonobos, Betabrand, and Allbirds

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J.McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Frame Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

Most of us are back on the road after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially right now, during summer. Following some airport outfit ideas can help add to the comfort.

So, today, I’ll be sharing some of these ideas to help make your travels more enjoyable and exciting.

Traveling can be hectic, with cramped seats, security checks, and stressed crowds. But that doesn’t mean you have to leave your travel style at the gate check.

Are you ready to turn heads at the airport while feeling comfy on your flight? Below are the best tips and advice regarding airport attire for ladies, so let’s start!

Since most of us travel in the summer, it’s crucial to prioritize breathable fabric before even deciding on the clothes. This fabric guarantees hygiene and in-flight comfort. The best breathable materials are linen and cotton.

Fabrics that do not allow air circulation will grasp sweat, probably making you feel dirty. So, always choose breathable clothes for summer travel.

You can opt for moisture-wicking man-made or even natural fabric. These options will strongly resist sweating and odor, thus making your travel trouble-free.

Loose clothing is the best option for long traveling. Are you wondering why loose attire is the best clothes for the airport?

The long flights pose a risk of deep vein thrombosis because you have to sit in cramped seats for a while, ultimately leading to blood clots.

Therefore, I strongly suggest you ladies skip too tight and non-stretchy pants on long trips and pick less restrictive garments. When we’re on air travel, we want as much durability and flexibility as we can get.

This is exactly what loose attire does – ensuring free movement throughout your flight, no matter how long it is.

If you suddenly get cold in air-conditioned spaces, a light sweater or jacket can offer much-needed insulation.

What’s more, layers can serve as a pillow or neck rest. In short, always remember to have a light sweater in your travel clothes.

The first common rule in the airport dress code for ladies is to steer clear of high heels and heavy jewelry. Always choose highly comfortable footwear so that your speed isn’t restricted on long walks in the airport, especially if you’re late for the flight.

Not to mention that you’ll be required to take off the shoes at the security check. Whenever I have to travel, I opt for cozy flats that can easily slip off. Also, don’t wear sandals or boots with complicated zippers and buckles as they demand a long time to take off.

So, save your heels for the suitcase.

Make sure that the clothes in your airport look don’t contain any metal elements. The reason is that metal can set off airport metal detectors, which will cost you precious time. Also, ensure that your bra doesn’t come with any metal.

To avoid an embarrassing pat-down inspection, always wear metal-free clothes and comfy bras . For instance, choose a sports bra or a padded one.

In addition to being metal-free, these bras will make you feel much more comfortable and avoid pinching.

Yes, traveling is incomplete without socks. But why don’t you try compression socks? Since airplanes translate to cramped seats, it can result in swelling. Compression socks are a simple solution to this issue.

If any of my readers have a pre-existing medical condition and tend to travel frequently, these socks will ensure optimal blood circulation. When your blood circulation is boosted, there will be no risk of deep vein thrombosis or swelling.

You can purchase compression socks online or at pharmacies.

You know what’s best about the summer season? You can wear the most comfortable clothes, such as a linen dress. This fabric will make long travel easier without sweating or suffering in the heat.

Linen is a great option because this natural fabric permits moisture and air to pass through. There are tons of travel-friendly linen dresses available in the market.

Pick any linen dress showing versatile patterns, designs, and colors, and find the right one for your next summer journey!

When it comes to airport outfit ideas, some feel at home with sweatpants, while others love to make the airport their runway. So, who’s got it right?

I’ll leave the fashion statements to your judgement, but first, let’s see the cutest airport outfit ideas introduced by well-known celebrities. Get ready to gain fashion inspo from your favorite celebs and style gurus.

Loose knitwear is my favorite attire to wear at airports, and no one else looks better in it than Gigi Hadid. Above, you can see her wearing a cozy bright brown and orange two-piece, looking super-stylish!

The lightweight clothing with a beige polo neck slipped underneath completes the overall look. She also played it cool with accessories – a cream tote bag and oversized sunnies look fabulous. This is definitely an insanely comfy outfit for a relaxing trip.

Let’s continue with Soo Joo Park, who also redefines comfortable yet stylish with an organic cotton oversized blouse and a silk-blend camisole underneath it.

You’ve heard me praising cotton and silk fabrics in the above sections, and this world-famous model chose to wear both.

For the bottom, Park decided to wear linen and cotton chino trousers. How genius is that? She went straight to dinner after her flight landed because her comfortable aesthetic attire is ready for meeting friends as much as it’s great for traveling.

And for all those who want to add a little Parisian glamor during their trip, Diane Kruger is a great inspiration.

She chose a pink matching set and pearl-embellished shoes for her trip. I have to admit that she rocks this style!

10 Airport Outfit Ideas to Inspire Your Upcoming Journey

Are you still worried about what to wear to the airport? Have you hunted the ends of social media to achieve a killer look for your next flight but found nothing that excited you?

Look no further because I’ve put together ten cool airport outfit ideas that will enable you to travel with less stress but not lack in stylishness. The next time you have to hop on a plane, your outfit will be sorted out even before packing up the luggage.

Time to pull back the curtains for the main show.

First on our list of airport outfits for ladies is the timeless color combo of black and white. This is perfect for women who don’t feel like standing out.

This example shows a loose and classic two-piece ensemble. The grey and white crop top with black, wide-cut trousers pair each other flawlessly.

The top is loose, breathable, and has a perfect boho-chic sleeve length. Thanks to the light material and loose cut, you will feel comfortable and cozy during your flight.

Pick comfy sneakers and a tote bag in the same shade to seal the deal.

What about choosing some pink shades to wear on the plane? Pink always sounds like a good idea! Take a look at this sporty and, at the same time, fancy outfit for traveling:

Pair your favorite T-shirt with a hoodie and stretchy leggings. The leggings are very comfortable and allow free movement and normal air circulation, which is very important during a flight.

The various pink shades reflect femininity without overdoing it. Light pink joggers and a rosè pink backpack are the perfect matching accessories.

If leggings and shirts aren’t your cup of tea, the next ensemble in my airport outfit ideas will have you hooked on something entirely different.

Nothing else feels more at home and casual than a long, oversized knitted cardigan. If you’re traveling to a cold region, you should definitely bring it with you.

Let’s see what it looks like.

While the sleeveless upper and flared pants embody the black-on-black fashion statement, the huge knitted cardigan adds a touch of uniqueness to the overall outfit.

With just one knitted piece, there’s no need to wear more layers as the woolen cardigan will give maximum warmth. Plus, it’s practical due to deep pockets to store your belongings.

Extra tip: cardigans like this can also serve as a great blanket on the plane so you can sleep well and take some rest. In addition, you can roll them up and make yourself a super-comfortable pillow. It’s a multifunctional piece of clothing I always take with me on travels!

Let’s go over a typical, casual travel outfit that I personally adore.

As I said earlier, I’m not a fan of jeans during travel, but they work fine for short flights. The grey, low V-neck made of breathable cotton fabric with faded jeans is an age-old but practical travel attire. I also advise you to always choose pants made of soft denim fabric and to prefer slightly looser models.

Get your backpack to bring some stuff like a book or headphones, and wear your preferred joggers to feel comfy during the flight.

The next dress for the airport also involves a simple white T-shirt, but the whole outfit is raised to the next level thanks to the unique pleated pants. Take a look:

Am I the only fan of the white and blue combo? I’d recommend this to ladies who want to put minimal effort and still look like they popped out of a magazine.

For an extra layer, choose the buttoned and collared light denim jacket, and you’ll undoubtedly look fantastic!

Still confused about what to wear to the airport? Well, this one will definitely help. It’s one of my favorite airport outfit ideas for many reasons.

I know I’m not the only woman owning a couple of plain black leggings in the wardrobe. But the highlight of this ensemble is the top – going below the knees, this dark green, full-sleeved tunic seals the deal! It’s a perfect outfit for the ladies who will be landing in cold regions.

The tight neckline allows you to add another layer underneath for better warmth. This baggy attire will not make you nervous and uncomfortable on your long flight. It will also look great on an apple-body shape because it hides the round midsection.

Also, here we have flat footwear that is simple to wear and take off.

Now I have prepared an inspiration for all ladies who prefer black travel outfits. Sometimes, we don’t feel like flaunting any bright colors and vivid patterns, and that’s completely fine. For those days, I suggest you wear this ensemble:

An all-black outfit that exudes comfort? Yes, please! A collared crop top with half sleeves and baggy-style pants are super chic and comfy.

What’s even better about black outfits is that you don’t have to worry about having a visible stain after the ketchup drips from your sandwich during the flight. Black endures everything!

The only women I don’t recommend wearing an all-black outfit are those with fair skin because this way, you’ll create too much contrast and look even paler.

Did you not get enough hoodie outfits? I got you. I also prefer different hoodies while traveling. It’s a timeless clothing piece, as nothing comforts us more than hoodie airport outfit ideas.

Check out this stunning combination:

Wear a sleeveless top underneath a hoodie so that you can take off and put on clothes depending on whether you are hot or cold during the flight. You can make any color contrast you want. But if you ask me, white and mauve work best together.

For all those who do not like typical airport outfit ideas and prefer branded clothes that stand out, I have prepared a simple and stunning outfit.

Wear a branded loose T-shirt with the visible logo on top to make the outfit stand out. For the bottom, choose simple leggings or trousers.

Of course, you don’t have to go with Moschino; you can flaunt Gucci, Prada, or any other brand you like. If you’re landing in Paris or any other fashion-forward city, this is how you can boast your enviable fashion sense. And of course, complete the outfit with comfortable sports sneakers and a large bag in which you can put everything you need. But if you feel like it’s too heavy to carry a bag while you tour the city, you always have an option to  store your luggage .

Last but not least, let me show you how to look cute when traveling. And when I say cute, I mean really girly cute.

Want to put more effort into your travel ensemble while brimming with a feminine aesthetic? No one’s stopping you from wearing adorable linen dresses for travel.

Appropriate for long travel, we have an off-the-shoulder, buttoned, and patterned knee-length dress which is simple and cute. Since you can feel cold on the plane, a jean jacket on top goes hand-in-hand with the dress.

The sandals are easy to untie and tie, so you won’t waste a lot of time fastening them. Also, bring a hair band and a few hair clips so that your hair doesn’t bother you during the trip. Try to choose plastic hair clips so that you have as few metal objects on you as possible.

Summer travel can be demanding because sometimes, it is difficult to find suitable clothing for high temperatures . But don’t worry, I’ve added two airport outfit ideas for this suffocating weather. You can still look flawless even if the weather is not on your side.

First, for the summer airport outfits, I’ve picked this stylish silk two-piece that will make you stand out in the crowd.

The front-knot crop top with half sleeves shows your waist and cleavage, so your skin can breathe. I also love the stretchable, flared pants in the same shade. A beautiful woolen wrap serves as an appealing layer.

And if you, just like me, love skirts and never get tired of them, stay focused because this outfit is for you! I love how they offer coverage while the air still can pass through and make us feel comfortable.

In the example above, we have a simple white blouse and a pastel blue maxi skirt, both made of cotton to maximize breathability, sweat resistance, and comfort during hot summer.

This type of skirt is a great option for all body shapes since it perfectly hides the tummy area and wide hips.

Don’t forget sunnies and some fancy sneakers made of thin material.

The last section of airport outfit ideas will cover the attire for the opposite season. Winter travel clothes may appear restricted, but I will demonstrate how you can style up with unique layers.

If you are traveling to some snowy destination, let these fashionable tourist styles inspire you.

Our first outfit consists of a bright yellow hoodie and black jeans at the bottom. Choose soft jeans so that you can wear tights under them if necessary.

A knee-length, oversized puffer jacket will offer maximum warmth and comfort while you’re waiting at the airport.

Let’s now continue with another fancy and super-stylish combination for winter travel:

Sweaters are a must to wear on cold days, and they’re amazing as an airport outfit since they provide comfort, softness, and warmth. This long-sleeved, woolen sweater is coupled with tight-fitting leggings.

If you are traveling to a very cold place, I advise you to buy thermal tights. Trust me, this piece of clothing will save you in low temperatures!

And that’s it, my ladies! I hope you have learned how to dress for a flight after going through all my airport outfit ideas.

The factors you should remember while picking out your outfit are personal comfort, flight duration, the weather, your stay at the airport, and style preferences.

Here’s a roundup of the styling tips and recommendations we discussed in the guide:

  • Choose loose clothing and breathable fabric.
  • Avoid heels and clothes with a lot of metal.
  • Wear compression socks.
  • Pack a sweater.
  • Opt for a linen dress.

12 Quality Airport Looks That Are Both Cute and Comfortable

Published on 6/7/2022 at 8:25 PM

airport travel ideas

Finding a good travel outfit is a seemingly Herculean task. You want something that's comfortable and easy to move in, but you still want to look pulled together. This is a subject I know a lot about; growing up, I was not allowed to wear workout clothes or sweatpants on a plane, and my airport outfit usually consisted of jeans or pants with a T-shirt and sweater. While I'm not recommending everyone wear their most rigid denim for a transcontinental flight, I do think that getting dressed in some way, shape, or form is a sign of respect for the crew members and airline staff, your fellow passengers, and yourself. It's important to note that cute airport outfits can still be comfy airport outfits; they're not mutually exclusive. Think of it as a step up from pajamas, but something you could freely move around in and survive delays, customs, and long waits at baggage claim. If you're traveling this summer, here are some cute travel outfit ideas we'd recommend wearing.

From cute, cozy jumpsuits to matching sweat sets that actually look pulled together, these are the 12 traveling clothes that will help you look elevated and cozy on a flight. Summer airport outfits can be particularly difficult because it's hot outside, but we're here to help you layer like a professional. Whether you're taking a quick trip for a long weekend or sleeping on a long overnight flight, these picks will help you both look and feel good. Keep on reading to shop our selects.

Comfortable Leggings: Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant With Pockets

Comfortable Leggings: Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant With Pockets

If comfort is king, grab a pair of black leggings. They're streamlined, comfortable, and can still look pulled together. These Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant With Pockets ($128) are bestsellers for a reason. They're great for summer travel because they're comfortable without being too heavy, and, plus, they have pockets! We'd pair these with sneakers and a classic T-shirt and jacket.

Main Image

A Staple Travel Accessory: Nordstrom Tissue Weight Wool & Cashmere Scarf

No matter the season, we always travel with a scarf. Airplanes can get cold, and this scarf can also double as a blanket. This Nordstrom Tissue Weight Wool & Cashmere Scarf ($99) is supremely lightweight but also super warm and comes in a bunch of colors.

Main Image

A Quality Layering Piece: Zara Faux Leather Jacket

One of our best travel hacks is to wear your bulkiest coat and shoes on the plane so it doesn't take up valuable suitcase space. If you're traveling this summer, you don't need a full-on winter coat, but a quality leather jacket is a universal essential. This Zara Faux Leather Jacket ($70) is affordable and looks good with everything.

Main Image

A Matching Sweatsuit: Pangaia 365 Hoodie and Track Pants

You can't go wrong with a matching sweatsuit. This Pangaia 365 Hoodie ($150) and 365 Track Pants ($120) are made of cotton, so they're not too heavy and not too threadbare. This set comes in over a dozen colors, but we think black is a great essential, and, plus, it's less likely to show dirt and stains.

Main Image

An Elevated Sweatpant: Alo High-Waist Trouser Wide Leg Pant

Consider these Alo High-Waist Trouser Wide Leg Pants ($118) a step up from your everyday sweats. They're made of terry, so they're super comfortable, but they look elevated and pulled together. Pair it with a T-shirt and sweater or jacket.

Main Image

A Quality T-Shirt: Old Navy EveryWear Slub-Knit T-Shirt

A T-shirt is a travel essential. Picking a quality, well-fitting T-shirt looks great with sweatpants or trousers, and it's a comfortable top that's also easy to wash, making it great for long flights. This Old Navy EveryWear Slub-Knit T-Shirt ($8, originally $13) is affordable and adorable; at under $10, you can pack a few extra in your carry-on.

Main Image

A Warm Sweater: Nordstrom Ribbed Sweater

Planes can be freezing, so it's important to pack layers even if you're going somewhere super hot. This Nordstrom Ribbed Sweater ($41-$50, originally $69) isn't too heavy, making it a great choice for flights. Paired with a scarf and pants, you'll feel so comfortable.

Main Image

Leggings With Pockets: Beyond Yoga Spacedye Out of Pocket High Waisted Midi Legging

These Beyond Yoga Spacedye Out of Pocket High Waisted Midi Leggings ($99) have been this editor's go-to travel legging for the last year. They're really thick, so they're comfortable on longer flights, and the side pockets are so useful to hold your phone or hand sanitizer for easy access. They come in a few colors, but we love darker colors for travel.

Main Image

A Soft Jumpsuit: Lovers and Friends Arden Jumpsuit

If you're going on a shorter flight, we like a jumpsuit because it's super comfortable. This Lovers and Friends Arden Jumpsuit ($198) is made of sweatshirt material, and the tie waist can be tightened or loosened for comfort. If you're going on a longer flight, though, a jumpsuit can be tricky because of the bathroom situation, so take that into consideration.

Main Image

A Classic Crewneck: Zara Basic Sweatshirt

A quality sweatshirt is always a good idea. Choose a basic style in a plain color to look streamlined and elegant even though you're still comfortable. We have a few colors of this Zara Basic Sweatshirt ($20) and think it's soft and perfect for travel.

Main Image

A Travel Jean: Frame The Jetset Flare

If you like the look of pants but want to be comfortable, pick up these Frame The Jetset Flare ($198) pants. They've got the look of jeans but pull on and have no zipper. They look great with sneakers or boots and are engineered to be the perfect travel pant.

Main Image

A Lightweight Set: Alo Micro Waffle Sierra Short Sleeve Top & Micro Waffle Pleasant Wide Leg Pants

If you want something light-colored and lightweight, go with this matching Alo Micro Waffle Sierra Short Sleeve Top & Micro Waffle High-Waist Pleasant Wide Leg Pant Set ($172). This is a great example of a cozy outfit that still looks pulled together. Throw that leather jacket over top and you have an easy, functional airport look.

The 26 Best Celebrity Airport Outfits, to Inspire You to Look Chic AF While Traveling

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Human Person Sweater and Sweatshirt

While the era of wearing fussy, fancy travel clothes is behind us, it's still well worth the effort to take a little time to put together an airport outfit that is equal parts comfortable and stylish. From sporty track pants to big, luxurious sweaters, these top-notch looks will motivate you to step up your airport-style game.

Gigi Hadid wears a plaid jacket to the airport

When you're not feeling the denim jacket, take a tip from Gigi Hadid: A plaid blazer is just as light (and dresses up black leggings).

Bundling up for the airplane has never been so chic. With an oversize cardigan, funnel-neck sweater, and pajama suiting pants, you're ready—and comfortable—for transit.

High-rise trousers and a cropped jacket are the model-off-duty way to fly.

Khloe Kardashian wears an oversized teddy coat outfit at the airport

Alexa Chung wears denim at the airport

Alexa Chung's cuddly coat is more than a chic outer layer: It can double as a soft pillow on the plane.

Selena Gomez wears an allblack outfit at the airport

Hailey Baldwin wears a blazer dress outfit to the airport

For city destinations, a sharp blazer-dress can go straight from the terminal to downtown.

Bella Hadid wears jeans and a bucket hat to the airport

Not every trip needs to be a style moment—even Bella Hadid keeps it simple with a graphic hoodie and jeans.

Liu Wen wears an outfit with several layers to the airport

Simple base layers make airport accessories look all the more elevated, like Liu Wen's strappy jacket and box bag over black pants and a turtleneck.

From cosy joggers and versatile tops to iconic sneakers, your travel wardrobe is about to get an upgrade.

What to wear to the airport: 7 travel outfit ideas

Planning your airport outfit is a crucial step in travel preparations. Travel outfits aren't just about making a style statement—prioritising comfort and function is key, too. Navigating the airport terminal, waiting in lines and sitting for extended periods call for cosy clothing items.

The best travel outfit ideas revolve around ease and adaptability. Whether you're trying to catch an early morning flight or prepare for a lengthy international journey, your travel outfit needs to be versatile enough to adapt from the chilly aeroplane cabin to the warmer climates of your destination.

Airport outfit ideas marry comfort with style, making athleisure outfits the ultimate go-to. For context, adaptable athleisure pieces include leggings and joggers, tops and T-shirts you can layer and jumpers that easily come on and off.

Of course, comfortable footwear you can slip in and out of is the ultimate finishing touch (hello, Nike Air Force 1s). Likewise, utilitarian bags help make packing and security checkpoints a breeze.

Whether they are for a quick business trip or a long-awaited getaway, the airport outfits ahead ensure you're well-prepared and comfy for whatever amount of time you spend travelling—from departures to arrivals.

Slip into cosy joggers.

Navigating the airport can sometimes feel like a sport in itself. That's why a pair of joggers or tracksuit bottoms are a reliable go-to. They offer maximum comfort and flexibility for long walks to your gate or unexpected dashes to make a connection. Style these with a form-fitting tank top or T-shirt, and layer with an oversized jacket to balance out the look. A chain-link necklace or sleek watch will elevate the cosiness without feeling fussy.

Tees, please

Easy tees are all about comfort—key for travel—but there's no harm in prioritising a little style, too. Think beyond your normal rotation of V-necks and crew necks and consider an oversized rugby style silhouette. Then, pair your favourite one with relaxed-fit joggers or cargo trousers and a classic baseball cap or beanie.

Don't underestimate the power of a functional bag. A duffel or backpack is a sensible choice for travel, as either option is often equipped with plenty of pockets and straps for hassle-free packing and carrying. Make the most of this travel look by thinking monochromatically , adding socks and a hat of the same hue for a colour-coordinating effect—and statement-making impact.

If you're heading somewhere warm (beach holiday, perhaps?) —and you want to get out of your airport outfit after landing—consider tossing an athletic dress, a colour-coordinating cardigan and a pair of strappy sandals in your carry-on bag for a quick glow-up.

8 Stylish Airport Outfit Ideas That Scream Comfort

Getty Images

There's nothing better than the feeling of getting on a plane and going on vacation , but getting through the airport can be a hassle. Navigating the check in and security lines alone can be treacherous territory. In order to make it to the duty-free shopping and airport bars in one piece, it’s best to put a chic spin on comfortable clothing. Airport fashion is about function: Scarves and maxi dresses are effortlessly elegant and can also serve as blankets. Matching sweat suits keep you cozy and the monochromatic color palette instantly makes you look sophisticated with minimal effort.

Less is more when planning your travel outfit as you want to keep your mental energy on catching your flight, not fixing a wardrobe malfunction. If you’re planning a trip soon and want the perfect outfit to wear to the airport, look no further than the inspiration here.

Maxi Dresses

Edward Berthelot/Getty Images

A maxi dress is the perfect go-to airport outfit as the one and done ensemble makes it all too easy to look polished.

Cozy Cardigans

Christian Vierig/Getty Images

Timeless fashion transcends trends for a reason, so take a page out of Princess Diana’s book and opt for a collegiate inspired look for your next trip.

Matching Sweatsuits

Jeremy Moeller/Getty Images

Elevate sweatpants by reaching for a matching set. Wearing a monochromatic look instantly goes from casual to sophisticated streetwear.

Denim Midi Skirts

Wear a calf-length denim skirt with a crisp and clean white T-shirt and your Uber driver will never know you packed the night before.

Oversized Tees

An oversized T-shirt with shorts will keep you comfortable while in transit and prevent you from overheating once you land in your tropical destination.

Baggy Jeans

Break out your favorite pair of slouchy jeans with a cropped tee and complete the look with a baggy jacket that can double as a blanket or pillow if necessary.

A Canadian Tuxedo

A Canadian tuxedo not only makes it super easy to get dressed when you have an early flight, but the matching colors and textures immediately creates an elevated look.

Oversized Blazers

An oversized blazer paired with relaxed jeans works whether you're sitting business class or not. Dark sunglasses will complete the enigmatic power look and have the TSA agents wondering if you’re a Succession extra.
