Cape Canaveral Lighthouse & Spaceflight Tours transports you on a journey through the evolution of exploration as we visit the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse that guided the first explorers around the Florida coast, to the location that propelled our ships into orbit, and look toward the new frontier of planetary travel.

Canaveral Tours provides tours of the Canaveral Lighthouse and Canaveral Space Force Station. Our 4-hour tour provides the History of the Cape from early settlers to current space programs. The tour takes you to the lighthouse, where you are provided a guided tour by a Lighthouse Foundation guide. The tour route includes “abandoned in place” launch complexes from the beginning missile program. Visit Launch Complex 26 and step inside the blockhouse where we launched our first satellite into space. See the Redstone rocket on display that sent Alan Shephard and Gus Grissom into space. Walk where we first launched a man into space. Many exhibits of space artifacts and operations for the space program. Special events and private tours are also available.

Wildlife Group Tour

Our tour takes your group of up to 10 guests to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore and Indian River, home to over 500 species of wildlife including many that are threatened and endangered. A variety of habitats are found in the 140,000 acres and 24 miles of barrier island, including coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, pinewood flats, and hardwood hammocks. This protected area around the Kennedy Space Center and NASA facilities was created for the purpose of providing habitats for migratory birds, wildlife diversity, endangered and threatened species, and to grant access for recreation, observation, and education of wildlife activities.

Learn More About Caribbean Shore Excursions

Top things to do in port canaveral & orlando, relax on cocoa beach.

With such gorgeous beaches stretching away in every direction, a day by the seaside beckons. Head to Cocoa Beach, just 15 minutes’ drive from Port Canaveral. Here, the classic 1960s pier, which is lined with shops and restaurants, extends 800 feet out into the warm Atlantic, with street entertainers providing a backdrop of music and art. The beach itself is a hotspot for surfers, with lifeguards, umbrellas and beach chairs to rent, and volleyball courts.

Spot Manatees on a Kayak Tour

Cocoa Beach is part of the Thousand Islands Conservation Area, which extends along the Banana River to the west of the beach town and consists of shady green mangrove tunnels, saltwater marshes, and lagoons. Wild manatees as well as numerous wading birds can often be spotted in this 338-acre preserve. The best way to see them is on a guided kayak tour. Eagle-eyed naturalists will help you spot these gentle, endangered creatures as you paddle the serene waterways.

Browse Orlando’s Malls

If you love retail, you’ll be in heaven in Orlando, where there are numerous gleaming malls to explore, offering everything from bargain-packed outlet stores to high-end designer fashion. Try The Mall at Millenia for designer labels or The Florida Mall for more mainstream items. Bargain-hunters should head to Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores, the location of dozens of designer outlet shops, as well as a handy location close to the theme parks.

What should I eat in the area?

You’ll find restaurants catering to every taste in Orlando, where there’s an impressive selection of high-end places to eat. Many are managed by celebrity chefs and have an emphasis on fresh, farm-to-table cuisine. Head for the fashionable Mills 50 District for Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian specialties, and West Church Street in Winter Park, the epicenter of the city’s fine dining scene.

Near Port Canaveral, The Cove is the place to go for waterfront restaurants cooled by sea breezes, where you can dig into tasty fish tacos, fresh oysters, snow crab, and mahi-mahi sandwiches. Other local specialties to try include rum cake, salt water taffy, gator jerky (yes, made from alligator meat), and Florida craft beers.

What’s the culture & history of the region?

While it’s easy to dismiss Orlando as having barely existed before the theme parks put it on the map, the city was actually founded in 1875. During the late 19th century, Orlando thrived as the hub of Florida’s citrus industry, an era which abruptly came to a halt in the Great Freeze of 1894. During this time, many citrus farmers went bust and left the area, leaving the citrus industry in the hands of a few big producers.

After the 1950s, Orlando and the surrounding area grew steadily as a tourist attraction, the appeal of the region boosted in 1955 when NASA opened its headquarters on Cape Canaveral. Theme parks followed, and the rest is history; Orlando now receives some 74 million visitors a year.

Where can I go shopping?

You’ll find an abundance of shopping opportunities in Orlando, specifically on International Drive, at Disney Springs, and in the outlet malls. You’ll find everything from designer labels to factory outlet bargains.

Nearer Port Canaveral, visit Cocoa Village for local art and bright, whimsical tropical clothing and homeware. Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach sells all you need for surfing. The gift shop at the Kennedy Space Center is a fantastic place for quirky gift ideas, from freeze-dried ice cream to model rocket kits. Around 30 minutes from the port, The Avenue Viera is an open-air retail center with some big names, while Merritt Square Mall, just 15 minutes away, is great for big department stores and specialty shopping.

How can I get around?

A rental car gives you the freedom to explore as you please and is a good idea if you’re staying in the area before or after your cruise. All the major companies operate here. In downtown Orlando, the I-Ride Trolley runs back and forth along International Drive, giving access to multiple restaurants, shops, hotels, and other attractions.

In Port Canaveral itself, there’s a shuttle service to Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island. You’ll also find rideshare service here.

What’s the local currency & tipping customs?

The currency in Florida is the U.S. Dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted. Tipping here is customary, as it is all over the United States. Leave 15-20% in restaurants for good service and tip taxi drivers and tour guides, too.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides Review

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides are just one of the popular things to do on the Florida Space Coast before or after your cruise.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

Share this post:

If you are cruising from Port Canaveral, there are a variety of things to do on the Florida Space Coast that make it worthy of spending a few extra days in the area before or after your cruise. Among the popular tours and attractions are Port Canaveral Airboat Rides.

While many cruisers are probably familiar with airboat tours near Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale), there are also similar tours offered in the Port Canaveral area. Located about a half hour away from the cruise port,  Airboat Rides at Midway is just one of the local companies that offers 1-hour tours on the St. Johns River, sometimes referred to as the Central Florida Everglades.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

Here, you can set out on a high speed search for the wildlife lurking within these grassy wetlands. You will be treated to appearances by alligators, birds, and other various creatures during your Port Canaveral airboat ride.

Disclaimer: We were hosted guests on this airboat ride, but as always, all opinions in this post are our own.

Prior to our recent 5-day Mariner of the Seas cruise , we spent the weekend in the Space Coast checking out the various tours and attractions. During our first day in the area, we had a customized day arranged with Canaveral Tours . One of the many stops on this tour included an exhilarating airboat ride.

During our drive to the location, our knowledgeable guide provided information on Central Florida’s landscape and wildlife.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

Upon arriving at Midway, a former fish camp in the 1930’s, we were able to browse the air conditioned gift shop and interact with some of the animals on site. These included a variety of snakes and birds. There are also restrooms here.

Setting Off on Our Airboat Adventure

Once our 1:30 pm tour group was called, we headed out to the dock to board our custom airboat. Here, we met our airboat captain, John. John, along with all the other airboat captains, are U.S. Coast Guard Master Captains. Further, John has been giving airboat tours for 10 years and was a wealth of knowledge.

Each rider on the airboat is provided with a headset to listen to the Captain’s narration during the tour. At several points during the ride, the boat also stops for photos and the chance to ask questions. In addition, all airboats are equipped with life jackets; children ages five and under are required to wear one.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

The airboats have stadium style seating, so there is not a bad seat in the house. Jetting off at speeds up to 45 miles per hour, you will feel the wind in your hair as you coast the St. Johns River. You will want to be on the lookout, as you never know where wildlife sightings might pop up.

Moove Out of Our Way

Gliding across the St. Johns River, most of us were on the lookout for alligators. However, our Captain made sure to point out some other birds, fish, and vegetation along the way. He did his best to get as close to the creatures as possible for some up-close viewing and photographs.

At one point, we even had a traffic jam as some cattle were wading in the shallow water blocking the throughway!

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

Alas, we were able to see some alligators peeking up from water, along with some pretty severe storm clouds and lightning in the distance. Yup, that’s Central Florida in the summer for you.

With the safety of the guests in mind, our Captain decided not to head back to the base camp right away, which was in the direction of the storm. Instead, we headed for shelter. We made our way to a wooden structure in the middle of the wetlands just before the skies opened up.

Thankfully, we waited out the heaviest rain with protection from the elements before maneuvering our way back. Ending up with almost double the tour time, this Port Canaveral airboat ride was certainly an adventure.

Port Canaveral Airboat Rides

We even got to hold a baby alligator and pose for some photos at the end of our tour.

Best Things to Do in (and Near) Port Canaveral

If you’re cruising out of Port Canaveral, consider adding a day or two pre- or post-cruise. The port is in Central Florida, ideally located within easy reach of some of the most popular area attractions, like the Kennedy Space Center and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Orlando theme parks are within day trip driving distance too. Here are the top things to do in and around Port Canaveral.

Best Things to Do Near Port Canaveral Cruise Port

Kennedy space center, merritt island.

Port Canaveral is on Florida’s Space Coast, so our #1 choice is Kennedy Space Center . To see the entire complex does take approximately a full day. However, there are shorter itineraries  that will hit the high spots.

Some of the top experiences include the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour, which gives a good overview of the complex, a guided tour of the amazing Rocket Garden, and the Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex, and Heroes & Legends, which features the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is one attraction to add to your bucket list when planning a cruise  out of Port Canaveral.

Brevard Veterans Memorial, Merritt Island

Military history enthusiasts will enjoy the incredible collection of military artifacts dating from the Revolutionary War to the modern day. The museum, plaza, and 82-acre park, with walking trails and a playground, are free. The park does have pavilions for rent as well.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Merritt Island

The refuge resulted from NASA acquiring the lands and waters of nearby Cape Canaveral to establish the Kennedy Space Center. In August 1963, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service signed an agreement establishing the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge .

The refuge provides a safe habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and wildlife to flourish. It is a prime example of how, when properly planned and managed, nature and technology can co-exist.

Canaveral National Seashore

Running between New Smyrna Beach and Titusville Florida, Canaveral National Seashore has diverse habitats. The habitats include a barrier island, open lagoon, coastal hammock, pine flatwoods, and offshore waters. The Canaveral Seashore is also a National Park.

Two entrances provide access to the Canaveral National Seashore: Apollo Beach (New Smyrna) and Playalina Beach (Titusville). The visitor center is located near the Apollo Beach entrance to the park.

To fish in the Canaveral National Seashore Park, you must possess a valid Florida Fishing License  if you are 16 or older, and you must follow the requirements of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. If you need fishing equipment, A1A Outdoors offers rental gear .

Kayaking in the Mosquito Lagoon of Canaveral National Seashore is a favorite pastime. You never know what you will see, and you will get a unique perspective of the park. Viking Eco Tours  offers kayak tours of the lagoon.

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Because of its location on the Cape Canaveral Space Force station, visitors must take a guided tour . Only US citizens can tour the lighthouse and the Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral.

Canaveral Lighthouse Tours offers weekly tours to the Lighthouse and Space Force Station. The tours last approximately four hours. Custom and private tours are available but check with Canaveral Lighthouse Tours for more information. Pickup and parking for tours is at Port Canaveral.

You’ll spend about an hour at the Lighthouse, where a guide will provide a tour. You can climb the first five floors of the lighthouse, as well as the outside staircase.

Exploration Tower, Port Canaveral

Currently closed for a maintenance project, the Exploration Tower  is a capsule of the history of Port Canaveral, an enclosed observation deck for viewing port traffic, an indoor observation deck for viewing rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center, and an outdoor observation deck offering 360-degree views of the port and surrounding areas.

Jetty Park, Port Canaveral

Have time to spare before you board your ship? Head to Jetty Park, the closest beach to Port Canaveral for fun in the sun! The beach is perfect for spending the morning getting some rays and playing in the water before you board the ship. There are also pavilions, a playground for the little ones, and restrooms so you can clean up and dress for boarding your cruise ship.

Wizard of Oz Museum, Cape Canaveral

For movie buffs, a stop at the Wizard of Oz Museum in Cape Canaveral  is a must! The mission of the Wizard of Oz Museum is to raise awareness of the rich history of the Oz cosmos to the public.

This fairy tale, set in Kansas, is a genuine American fairy tale that has had a profound impact on American culture. The museum seeks to foster conversation and meaningful connections through imagination and stories, creating an immersive experience as you venture into the world of The Wizard of Oz.

The museum was opened in 2018 by the family of Fred Trust. Trust has collected Wizard of Oz memorabilia for 35 years. With a degree in computer science and having worked in the field for 40+ years, Trust has created an immersive experience that allows visitors to experience scenes right out of the Wizard of Oz books.

The newly designed scenes are not in the movie, providing a brand-new experience for guests. Over 2000 display items are housed in the museum, including original props from the film. This is the museum to visit if you are a die-hard Wizard of Oz fan!

Disney World is two hours from Port Canaveral and an easy drive. If you are flying in for a cruise leaving Port Canaveral, why not plan a pre- or post-cruise day trip visit to Disney? Check out some tips here  if you are a first-time visitor to Disney World.

Read More: If you are struggling to decide between a visit to Disney or Universal, here is a comparison.

Your tour will be personalized to you. The guides are knowledgeable and know all the best places to spot the local wildlife – including alligators!

Kayak Tours

Kayak Tours on the Space Coast are plentiful, so choose your tour carefully! If you want to see manatees or dolphins, check if they mention these on the tour company website.

Because of the number of dolphins in the area, you are almost always able to see them but ask the tour company. You might also see a gator or three!

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is one of the places that comes to mind when talking about Florida beach towns; it is also one of Florida’s more affordable vacation spots, with many things to do and see. Its close location to Port Canaveral makes it another choice for pre- or post-cruise opportunities.

Cocoa Beach Pier

One of the best choices when visiting Cocoa Beach is to head for the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier. This historic landmark stretches 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean and is almost a one-stop destination itself!

The pier offers restaurants, bars, gift shops, beach rentals, freshwater showers, live entertainment, and live music. There are regulation beach volleyball courts and lifeguards year-round.

For surfing enthusiasts, Cocoa Beach offers some of the best surfing on the East Coast. Have a desire to learn to surf? No problem! You can take a surf lesson or two at Cocoa Beach!

Florida Key Lime Pie Shop

Florida is known for many things, among them Key Lime Pie. Have you never tried Key Lime pie before? Then, plan a quick stop at Florida Key Lime Pie Shop in Cocoa Beach. You’ll find a vast array of Key Lime favorites and more.

Ron Jon Surf Shop – A Travel Destination in Itself

Founded by Ron DiMenna in 1959 on the New Jersey shore, Ron Jon Surf Shop  has its own surf culture. In 1963, the Florida flagship surf shop opened in Cocoa Beach.

Today, Ron Jon Surf Shop Cocoa Beach is not just an ordinary surf shop; it is a travel destination, drawing visitors from across the globe. The two-story store offers everything needed for surfing, days on the beach, and more. They have surfboards, skimboards, surf and beach clothing, and accessories.

Open 365 days a year, the shop spans two acres. Ron Jon’s offers more surf and beach gear than any other surf shop in the country.

I Dream of Jeannie

When many hear “Cocoa Beach,” two things immediately pop into their heads – Cape Kennedy, now known as Cape Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center, and the long-running television show “I Dream of Jeannie.” The sitcom ran from 1965 to 1979. Cape Kennedy and Cocoa Beach were the settings for the story, which was filmed in California.

Though there is no home to visit, you’ll find “I Dream of Jeannie” memorabilia scattered throughout the area. The most popular place to visit is the street sign “I Dream of Jeannie” Lane and the historical marker.

Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures

Do you love ziplining or are you curious to try? If yes, then you must try Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures .

The aerial park was designed to intentionally become an integral aspect of the natural beauty of the area and to have a minimal impact on the land.

Snuggled between two bodies of water, the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll have a breeze even on the hottest summer day, and you will experience breathtaking views from the highest platforms. Imagine being high up in the treetops, surrounded by nature, as you embark on a memorable aerial adventure.

Taking a Cruise Out of Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral in Brevard County in Central Florida is our top choice for taking a cruise ship out of Florida. Four airports are nearby, so taking a cruise from Port Canaveral is easy for those flying into the area. The airports are Daytona Beach International Airport  (DAB), Orlando Sanford International Airport  (SFB), Orlando International Airport  (MCO), and Melbourne International Airport  (MLB), which is the closest to Port Canaveral.

The cruise port is easy to navigate, with clear signage directing you to the cruise terminal for your ship departure. There is plenty of parking, and folks are on hand to help direct you to the proper location.

Cruise Lines Sailing Out of Port Canaveral

When planning a future cruise, look at cruise lines sailing out of the Port Canaveral cruise port. Currently, five cruise lines offer regular sailings out of Port Canaveral. These cruise lines are Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Disney.

For adults who are traveling without children, Victory Casino Cruises also leaves from Port Canaveral. This cruise is an authentic Las Vegas-style casino experience in Florida on the Space Coast. The cruises are typically five to six hours, departing and returning to Port Canaveral. There are two sailings a day, featuring slots, live table games, craps and more.

Cruising out of Port Canaveral is an incredible way to experience a small taste of Central Florida. With theme parks, all-inclusive experiences, and adrenaline-pumping fun to relaxing beach days, the Space Coast in Central Florida is a great option for your next cruise.

Back to where...are you on a cruise ? More info would help to give you an answer.

Cool Cruiser

I am interested in this also   We will be in port 12-8 so looking for round trip from ship.  The cruise company has an excursion but seems pricey.  Was hoping I could find something on my own. 6 people in our party!

The tours inside are run by Space Center staff. So, why not get an Uber from PC to the main entrance, and either arrange a return pick up or contact them again to return to the ship. All you need is transportation there and back.

Tickets aren't cheap, so check the website for any specials. They used to have Sr. Citizen, AAA, etc, but I haven't been in a while.
