London Duck Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024) - Tripadvisor

London Duck Tours: Guided Adventure Through London

The amazing amphibious adventure begins with a land tour through the streets of London, as you explore the capital’s historical landmarks, such as 10 Downing Street, Nelson’s Column and St James’s Palace. After this, you head down to the water at MI6’s Secret Intelligence Service and cruise along the Thames to see the Houses of Parliament, the Buxton Memorial and MI5. Each landmark offers up its own highlights, stories and secrets. Perhaps the best part of the Duck Tour is the live-action commentary, which includes alternative titbits which you wouldn’t hear on ordinary sightseeing tours.

In addition to the standard land-and-sea package, you can choose a themed tour too, including a D-Day special where you’ll hear about your vessel’s interesting wartime history. There is also the James Bond commentary tour where you get to see all of the famous settings for the movies, plus some additional MI5 and MI6 extras. Whether you’re new to the city or you’ve done it all before, the London Duck Tours offer up a fantastic alternative way to explore famous London scenery while taking in the finest riverside views.

Windsor Duck Tours on River Thames with Windsor Castle in distance

Book Tickets Online

You haven’t seen Windsor until you’ve seen it by Duck!

Laugh, learn and experience our fantastic 1-hour live guided tour by Road and River!

The commentary we offer is fun, lighthearted with a dash of history, keeping it fun for all ages.

Our unique adventure begins by road in the heart of Windsor, taking in the famous sights, before ‘SPLASHDOWN’ into the River Thames, travelling downstream to Windsor with unforgettable views of Windsor Castle and Eton.

We run two types of tour – Swan and Mallard – which vary the time spent on water and road; check our website for details.

Our tours run most days of the year; check our booking pages for available dates and times.

Booking in advance during holidays and the summer season is essential to reserve your place on our tour.

We also offer private hire for corporate groups, birthdays, schools, etc.

Our tour pick-up point is DUCK STOP, opposite Theatre Royal, 32 Thames St, Windsor, SL4 1PS.

The 26-seat amphibious vehicle we use was purpose-built in 2010 for maximum safety and comfort of our passengers.

Our vehicles are NEW, purpose-built to carry passengers, not converted wartime units.

They meet safety standards for land (VOSA) and water (MCA) straight from the factory.

Our drivers are boatmen with a minimum of Tier 2 qualification for the water and cat ‘D’ PSV Drivers for the Road.

Windsor & Eton Riverside Station - Walk out of the station doors towards Windsor, cross the road walking past the fountain towards the castle. Our duck stop is 50m from the fountain on the castle side of the road.

Windsor & Eton Central Station - Head out of the train towards Windsor Royal Shopping Center. Turn left when you get to the old steam train and walk up the hill towards the castle. Cross the road and with the castle in front of you turn left and walk down the hill. You can't miss our stop at the bottom of the hill.

LONDON DUCK TOURS - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

What are our Terms and Conditions?

Click here to view full Terms and Conditions

What are the nearest transport links?

Duck Stop – Belvedere Road, Waterloo, London, SE1 8XU.  It’s a short walk from the London Eye (between Jubilee Gardens and The Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall) and a short walk from Waterloo tube and rail stations.

Can I park near to the departure point?

Parking? In Central London?!!!

We do encourage you to use Public Transport however if you do choose to drive please be aware that there are limited options available.  There is the Cornwall Road multi-storey car park near-by, subject to spaces and charges.  There is a limited number of spaces for Blue Badge holders.  Please note that we are within the Congestion Charge Zone. For more information, please see the TFL website, www.tfl.gov.uk

What is your Access Statement?

We aim to provide tours that are accessible and enjoyable for people of all abilities.

We are in a unique position as DUKWs started life as army landing vehicles and ours have been adapted to meet stringent regulations laid out by land and river Regulatory Authorities. This means that there are an unavoidable five steps up to the passenger compartment.  Passengers will be required to leave their wheelchairs to board, however there are support handrails and non-slip surfaces to walk on.

Due to limited space, wheelchairs cannot be taken on board but can be left with our departure point representative.

Please note that for operational reasons we may ask you to transfer onto another Duck at the slipway before entry into the river.

Assistance dogs (including guide dogs and hearing dogs) are welcome but must be allocated a seat on board (free of charge) so please call our booking office on 020 7928 3132 to arrange this.  Our tours are very popular at peak times so, as per the advice we give to all our cusotmers, we suggest booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you have any further queries please give us a call on 020 7928 3132 (option 3) or email [email protected]

Can I take buggies on board?

Buggies (and infant car seats) are not permitted on board but we are happy to keep your buggy at our Duck Stop or Booking Office (5 minute walk away from Duck Stop) but all buggies and infant car seats are left at the owner’s risk. Please note the tour is not recommended for children under the age of 3 but is subject to parent’s discretion.

Can I take luggage on board?

Luggage is not permitted on board but we are happy to keep your luggage at our Duck Stop or Booking Office (5 minute walk away from Duck Stop)  but please note all bags are left at the owner’s risk.

Is there anywhere to eat close to the departure point?

Yes, there are plenty of places to eat.  And if you are a London Duck Tours customer, we have Discount Vouchers for some restaurants in London.

What if I want to send a compliment / complaint?

You can contact us in writing at Customer Services, London Duck Tours, Block 2, 5th Floor, Elizabeth House, 39 York Road, London SE1 7NQ or via the Contact US page choosing FEEDBACK from the Topic headings.

Is the trip suitable if I am pregnant?

Yes, but it’s at your discretion.  On land it’s like travelling on a regular bus (so we don’t have seat belts) and we have a very gentle top speed of 6 knots on the river.  We travel at a controlled speed down our slipway to enter the Thames.  You should bear in mind we don’t have toilets on-board and are not permitted to make toilet stops.  Remember to bring warm, comfortable clothing as it can get chilly on the river even in summer.

Can I take my pets/animals on board?

Pets and Animals of any nature are not permitted on board the vehicle. However, special exceptions will be made for assistance dogs which include guide dogs and hearing dogs. They must be allocated a seat onboard (free of charge) so please call our booking office on 020 7928 3132 to arrange this. We highly recommend booking in advance if you would like to use this service.

Do I get a ticket sent to me?

We do not issue tickets.  You will be given a reference number and this is all you require to board.  If you book on-line, your reference number will appear on your confirmation email which can be printed out once your booking has been confirmed.

Do I need to book in advance?

It is highly recommended that you book in advance for weekends, school and public holidays as we often sell out a few days in advance.

Pre-booked purchases carry a single booking fee of £3 on the transaction cost.

Can I reserve my seat?

We will normally board you in the order you check-in at the departure point. There are a set number of seats on each craft and we encourage your group to sit together when boarding especially as seating cannot be reserved. Sometimes it will not be possible for all parties to sit together although we will try to achieve this if there is time before the tour departs.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes, please see our ‘Buy Tickets’ page.

How do I redeem a voucher?

You can redeem your London Duck Tours voucher online or over the phone by calling 020 7928 3132 .  Please note Child and Youth Vouchers can only be redeemed over the phone.  If you have a voucher from one of our agents, please follow the instructions on your confirmation letter.

What is the capacity of the vehicles?

Each vehicle seats 30 passengers and we have fleet of 8 Ducks.

Can I hire the vehicle exclusively?

Yes, please refer to Private Hire page

What is the adult to child ratio for group bookings?

Please note that children and infants must always be accompanied by an adult.

Only 2 infants per tour are permitted.

1 to 7 yrs: 5 children per 1 adult 8 to 12 yrs: 9 children per 1 adult 13 to 17 yrs: 12 children per 1 adult

What sights do I pass?

Please see ‘Tours’ page.

How long does the tour last?

Tour duration is approximately 75 minutes with about 30 minutes on the river.  Tour durations may vary due to road or river conditions.

How often do the tours run?

Weekends and school holidays: Every 15 minutes from 09:45. Please note, we often sell out at peak times so we advise advance booking to avoid disappointment. Weekdays in term time: Every 30 – 60 mins from 10.00 depending on demand and availability. We advise you check our website before travelling.

Last tours depend on sunset and vary slightly but for general guidance: January: 15:00 February: 15.30 (15.45 weekends and school holidays) March: 16.30 (16.45 weekends and school holidays) April to August: 18.00 Saturdays and school holidays, 17.30 Sundays, 17.00 all other days) September: 17.30 October: 16:30 November: 15:00 December: 14:45

Please click on ‘Buy Tickets’ page for full details of tour times.

Do I have a tour guide?

Yes, there is a live guide on board giving an action packed, entertaining  commentary in English.  They will provide an insightful view of London’s history, plus fascinating facts and figures about our wonderful bright yellow DUKWs.  The house style is fun, friendly and informative.

Are you able to offer foreign language tours?

At present we only do tours in English.

Is the tour Hop on Hop off?

Our tour starts and finishes on Belvedere Road, SE1 7XU and is a non-stop, panoramic tour.

Do you travel in all weathers?

We aim to travel in all weathers but we may need to cancel/postpone tours if there are high winds, heavy snow or thick fog. The decision whether to run a tour in very bad weather is made at the company’s discretion. We will try our best to inform you of any changes prior to your arrival at our Duck Stop.  If we do have to cancel a tour, you can either rebook for another day or receive a voucher valid for a year.

What is the likelihood of a route change?

London is a vibrant city with an outstanding reputation for hosting many world class events throughout the year.  Inevitably this means that, occasionally, we will need to change the advertised route to accommodate the road closures and diversions which are key to the successful delivery of these events.  If road conditions, either prior to or during a tour, prevent us from operating the tour as advertised we will substitute the best available alternative route. London Duck Tours Limited reserves the right to cancel or alter arrangements. We will use reasonable endeavours to inform you of any route changes in advance, but sometimes road closures or other events can happen with little or no notice. If passengers are unhappy with taking the proposed alternative route during a planned diversion, subject to availability, passengers can change date or time of the tour, receive a gift voucher or claim a full refund of the price paid only if arranged prior to the tour commencing.

Does the vehicle have a roof?

Yes, each Duck has a roof and roll down windows.

It can get chilly on the river even in summer and we recommend that you bring an item of warm clothing for this part of the tour.

Do I need any special clothing?

The great British weather can be fickle so we strongly recommend you come prepared with suitable clothing.  It can get chilly on the river even in summer and we recommend that you bring an item of warm clothing for this part of the tour.

Do I get wet?

You should not get wet but sometimes with a high tide and high winds you may experience some water spray off the Thames.

Are there refreshments on board?

No, we do not permit food or drink on the vehicle.
