7 – 10 Day Florida Keys Itinerary: Miami, Key West & the National Parks

Julie Last updated: February 1, 2024 Itinerary , United States 12 Comments

Florida Keys Road Trip Itinerary Guide

Driving from Miami to Key West is one of the best road trips in the USA. White sandy beaches, palm trees, beautiful aquamarine water, warm sunny skies…sounds nice, right? Add in tropical drinks, alfresco dining, a few slices of key lime pie, a national park or two (or even three), and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the US, and you have an awesome road trip destination. In this guide, learn how to put all of this together into the perfect Florida Keys itinerary.

We have done this numerous times over the years, sometimes flying into Key West, other times starting near Miami and road tripping through the Florida Keys. I recommend driving through the Florida Keys at least one way, because there are a lot of cool things to see and do along this drive.

For those of you on a quest to visit all the national parks in the USA, three of them are located along this drive ( Everglades, Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas ). Even if you aren’t trying to tick these off your bucket list, they still make great additions to your Florida Keys itinerary.

There are several different ways to plan your trip, depending on your interests and how much time you have. In this guide, we provide three different options: 7 to 10-day road trips that make great starting points for planning your itinerary.

Table of Contents

Brief Overview of the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys stretch over 180 miles. Along this distance are more than 800 keys.

The term “key” comes from the Spanish word “cayo,” which means “small island.” Keys are formed on the surface of a coral reef.

This coral reef (which is called the Florida Reef ) forms the keys that run from mainland Florida down to Key West and out to the Dry Tortugas.

The Florida Reef is the third largest coral barrier reef system in the world (the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Belize Barrier Reef are larger). This reef starts in Biscayne National Park and runs to Dry Tortugas National Park.

So, on this Florida Keys itinerary, you get to visit both ends of this massive reef system, plus road trip along the small keys that were formed by the reef.

The Florida Overseas Highway is 113 miles long, running from mainland Florida to Key West. As you road trip along this highway, you will drive through hundreds of small keys, all joined by numerous bridges. It’s a gorgeous drive with lots to do, as you will see in this post.

Florida Keys Itinerary

In this guide, we provide three different itineraries.

The first is a detailed 10-day Florida Keys itinerary that includes all three national parks, some time in Miami, and a road trip through the Florida Keys in both directions. It also provides lots of time in Key West.

This itinerary can be easily modified. If you don’t want to visit the three national parks, simply take them out. And you can also save time by flying either to or from Key West, rather than driving both ways (but this will raise the cost of this trip).

Florida Keys itinerary #2 and #3 are 7-day road-trips that are done point-to-point. Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and Key West form the end points for both itineraries, and you will drive through the Florida Keys one way. I provide an itinerary for both directions through the Florida Keys, because rental car prices can vary depending on the direction you choose.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: If you are planning to road trip in only one direction through the Florida Keys, I recommend researching flight and rental car costs before choosing your route. By traveling one way, you will have a rental car drop fee. It is usually (but not always) cheaper to start in Key West and drop the car in Miami or Fort Lauderdale (rather than starting in Miami and ending in Key West). It’s good to know this cost, and your flight costs, before finalizing the direction you go.   With that being said, the cheapest way to visit the Florida Keys is to road trip in both directions, dropping the car off where you picked it up. Also, flights are generally cheaper if you fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, rather than Key West.

Florida Keys Itinerary #1

10-Day Road Trip: Miami, Key West, Everglades, Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas National Parks

This 10-day Florida Keys itinerary is done out-and-back from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area. It includes a visit to all three national parks plus lots of time along the Florida Keys and in Key West.

10-Day Florida Keys Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Day 2: Everglades National Park Day 3: Biscayne National Park Day 4: Florida Keys road trip to Key West Day 5: Key West Day 6: Key West Day 7: Dry Tortugas National Park Day 8: Key West Day 9: Florida Keys road trip to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Day 10: Fly home

Florida Keys Itinerary Map

Florida Keys Itinerary Map

Day 1: Arrive in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

Arriving in miami/ft. lauderdale.

To start off your trip, you have two major international airports to choose from. Miami International Airport and Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are located relatively close to one another.

We typically fly into Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Southwest Airlines. Flights are cheap and this airport is smaller and a bit easier to get around. By car, Ft. Lauderdale is located 30-minutes north of Miami, so it adds a little extra driving time to get to Homestead and the Florida Keys, but for us it has been worth the cost savings.

On this Florida Keys itinerary, you will fly round trip out of one airport (either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood) and pick-up and drop-off the rental car from this same location.

When planning your trip, I recommend checking flights for both airports. Also check rental car prices, because there could be a slight difference in price as well.

If you plan your flight such that you arrive in the morning, you will have the afternoon and evening to visit Miami and/or South Beach.

Where to Stay

If you plan to spend the evening in Miami or South Beach, sleep in Miami tonight.

However, the best place to minimize driving tomorrow is Homestead. This town is located south of Miami, near Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, and the start of the drive down the Florida Keys.

In Homestead, we have stayed at both the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Miami Homestead and the Courtyard by Marriott Miami Homestead , and both are great. The Speedway Blvd Townhouse is a two-bedroom townhouse that can accommodate up to six people and gets excellent reviews.

In Homestead, we ate at the Mamma Mia Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria (good Italian food) and Bangkok Cuisine (good Thai and Southeast Asian food). Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery was highly recommended, but they were closed during our visit. This winery is located to the west of Homestead so you will do some extra driving to get here but it really looks great.

Day 2: Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is one of the largest national parks in the lower 48 states. This enormous wetland park is home to manatees, American crocodiles, a huge number of birds.

With one day, you can visit the eastern side of Everglades National Park, visiting both Shark Valley and the Flamingo area of the park.

Start at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center, ideally by 8 am, before the park gets busy. From Homestead, it is just a 20-minute drive to get here.

Spend the morning visiting the sights along Highway 9336, as you drive towards Flamingo. Spot alligators from the Anhinga Trail, walk the short Mahogany Hammock boardwalk trail, and look for manatees in Flamingo.

One Day in Everglades

Anhinga Trail

In the afternoon, drive north to Shark Valley, one of the best spots in Everglades National Park for wildlife viewing. End the day with an airboat ride through the Everglades.

An airboat ride is a great way to spot alligators.

LEARN MORE: One Perfect Day in Everglades National Park

Tonight, sleep in Homestead.

ITINERARY MODIFICATION: If you spent last night in Miami, South Beach, or Ft. Lauderdale, I recommend starting at Shark Valley, then do the airboat ride, and end with the Flamingo area of Everglades National Park. This will save you some driving time if you do it in this order.

Day 3: Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park is located south of Miami. 95% of this park is water, so the best way to explore it is by boat. If you like snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, paddle boarding, kayaking, or simply cruising around by boat, you will love this park.

Our favorite experiences in the park are visiting Boca Chita Key, snorkeling the reefs and shipwrecks, and paddle boarding in Jones Lagoon. For the full list of things to do, and a lot more information about the park, read our Guide to Biscayne National Park.

Fowey Rocks Lighthouse

To visit Biscayne National Park, you will have to join a tour or hire a private charter. The Biscayne National Park Institute is the main tour operator for the park, and they offer lots of different tour options, from half to full day trips into the park, where you can go snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and paddle boarding.

They offer a lot of different tours and availability changes throughout the year. If you need help narrowing down the list, here are several tours I recommend:

  • Jones Lagoon Eco-Adventure
  • Sail, Paddle, Snorkel & Island Visit
  • Small group snorkel experience

Alternatively, you can also hire a private boat. This is more expensive, but you can customize your trip. There are very few companies authorized to lead tours of Biscayne (get the full list on the National Park Service website ). We used Explore Miami Boat Rental (but prices have doubled since our trip). Prices start at $1200 for a 4-hour tour with a max group size of 6.

That sounds like a lot, and it is, but if you are a family of four, you could spend $400 – $700 for a group tour with Biscayne National Park Institute. By hiring a private charter, you can customize your itinerary and move at your own pace.

What We Did: We spent two days in Biscayne National Park. On the afternoon of day 1, we took the Jones Lagoon Tour with Biscayne National Park Institute. On day 2, we hired Explore Miami Boat Rental for a 6-hour tour of the park.

Tonight, sleep in Homestead or Key Largo.

Key Largo is one of the northernmost Florida Keys. There are a lot of beachfront resorts and restaurants here, making this a great spot to spend the night.

Coconut Bay Resort gets excellent reviews and has rooms that can accommodate up to six people.

In Tavernier, which is just south of Key Largo, the Island Bay Resort and the Atlantic Bay Resort get rave reviews. If you want to stay in a large hotel with lots of amenities, take a look at the Playa Largo Resort & Spa.

For dinner, Gilbert’s Resort, the Caribbean Club, Hobo’s Café, and Sharkey’s Sharkbite Grill all get good reviews.

Day 4: Florida Keys road trip to Key West

Today, road trip along the Florida Keys to Key West. If you are starting the day in Homestead, it is about a 3-hour drive (130 miles) without stops. From Key Largo, you are looking at a 100-mile drive that takes about 2 hours without stops.

The to-do list in the Florida Keys is long. For the full list, read our article Things to Do in the Florida Keys,  but below I list several great activities to do on the drive today.

Note: Since this Florida Keys road trip itinerary includes two separate drives through the Florida Keys, I will be listing different activities to do on the return drive. Places we are saving for the return drive are snorkeling in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Turtle Hospital.

Breakfast in Key Largo

For breakfast in Key Largo, Mrs. Mac’s is our favorite spot. Wait times for brunch can get long. If the wait is too long, we also really like Harriette’s Restaurant. They are famous for their Key Lime muffins, which are good, just not quite as good as key lime pie (in my opinion).

Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary is home to more than 100 birds that cannot be released back into the wild. Owls, pelicans, vultures, hawks, and other species native and migratory to the Florida Keys have a home here. The sanctuary is free to visit but donations are appreciated.

Best Key Lime Pie in the Florida Keys

We have sampled a lot of key lime pie, in both the Florida Keys and Key West. The key lime pie at the Blonde Giraffe is our favorite. Buy a slice or two and enjoy it while sitting in their lovely garden.

Rain Barrel Village

This quirky cluster of shops is a great place to go shopping for souvenirs and unique Florida Keys gifts.

History of Diving Museum

If you have an interest in scuba diving, this is a cool museum to visit. Drs. Joe and Sally Bauer have spent the last 40 years assembling the largest collection of dive helmets, scuba gear, armored suits, and diving memorabilia in the world.

Early Lunch at Morada Bay Beach Café

This is one of our favorite spots in the Florida Keys. Dine al fresco, on a white, sandy beach, under the shade of palm trees. The food is great, and the drinks are even better.

Best Florida Keys Itinerary

Fish tacos at Morada Bay

If it’s still too early for lunch, you can save Morada Bay for the return drive up the Florida Keys on day #9. The Midway Café and Coffee Bar, just a few miles down the road, makes a great spot to stop for a snack or a cup of coffee.

Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s

This is a must do in the Florida Keys.

Tarpons are large fish that grow up to 8 feet in length. At Robbie’s, you can hand feed these fish.

It costs a few dollars for a bucket of fish. And it helps to have a buddy…someone to chase away the pelicans, who are very determined to steal your fish before you have a chance to feed them to the tarpons.

A visit to Robbie’s is tons of fun, cheap, and takes just a few minutes of your time.

Visit Sombrero Beach on Marathon Key

As you drive through Marathon Key, you can make a detour to Sombrero Beach. If you want to get in some beach time on today’s drive, this is a great place to do it (another option is Bahia Honda State Park).

Bahia Honda State Park

This state park is a beautiful place to visit in the Florida Keys. Calusa Beach and Loggerhead Beach are located at the far end of the peninsula, near the Old Bahia Honda Bridge. Currently, Sandspur Beach is closed for a renovation project.

You can also go kayaking, boating, snorkeling, and fishing.

Calusa Beach | Florida Keys Itinerary

One of the best things to do in the Florida Keys is walking to the end of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge. This trail was once part of the Overseas Railway. In 1938, the railway was converted into a road, and this was used as part of the Overseas Highway until 1972, when a replacement bridge was constructed.

It’s an uphill walk to get onto the bridge but what a great view from the top!

Big Pine Key: Key Deer & the No Name Pub

In Big Pine Key, keep a look out for the Key Deer, an endangered deer that only lives in the Florida Keys. They are smaller than other white-tailed deer and we usually see them near the No Name Pub.

Key Deer

The No Name Pub is the coolest bar in the Florida Keys, at least out of the ones we visited. Located in what feels like the middle of nowhere on Big Pine Key, this pub has the slogan, “a nice place if you can find it.”

No Name Pub dates back to 1931 and started off as a bar and a brothel. It’s no longer a brothel, but since the 1980’s visitors have been adding their dollar bills to the walls and ceiling of the pub. Now it looks like every square inch of the No Name Pub is covered with the faces of George Washington, with a few bills from other countries thrown into the mix here and there.

No Name Pub

From Big Pine Key, it takes about 45 minutes to get to Key West. Check into your hotel and then have dinner. For restaurant recommendations, read our Key West Restaurant Guide. For recommendations on where to stay in Key West, read our Key West Hotel Guide.

Days 5 & 6: Key West

One of the great things about Key West is that there is plenty to do, if you want to stay busy. Or simply relax on the beach or at a resort during the day and go out at night.

Below I list several ways to plan your days in Key West.

Morning: Brunch at Blue Heaven or La Grignote Midday: Tour the Hemingway House, then take in the view from the Key West Lighthouse, go shopping along Duval Street, visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, then wait in line to have your photo taken at the Southernmost Point (optional) Evening: Dinner (we recommend Café Marquesa, Salute! On the Beach, or El Siboney; Louie’s Backyard at sunset is nice), then go bar hopping on Duval Street

Day 7: Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park is located at the end of the Florida Keys, about 70 miles west of Key West.

Day trips from Key West last anywhere from 4 to 10 hours, depending on the mode of transportation you use.

Getting to Dry Tortugas National Park

The only way to get to this remote park is by boat or by seaplane. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

The Yankee Freedom Ferry is the ferry that connects Key West to the Dry Tortugas.

Taking the ferry is a full day experience (about 10 hours total). Check-in time is at 7 am. The ferry departs at 8 am and it takes 2.5 hours to get to Dry Tortugas National Park. After spending four and a half hours in the park, it’s another 2.5-hour ride on the ferry, getting you back to Key West at 5:30 pm.

By ferry, it costs $220 for adults and $165 for children and this also includes your national park fee.

You can also hire a private charter, but prices average about $3000 for the day.

By Seaplane

This is the quickest way to get to the Dry Tortugas. It’s also an incredibly scenic flight.

You will fly over the keys and the Marquesas Islands and get to see both Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park from the sky. The plane flies low, so you can also see nurse sharks and sea turtles in the water (yes, the water is that clear!), underwater sand dunes, reefs, shipwrecks, and the keys.

Dry Tortugas National Park photo

Dry Tortugas National Park from the seaplane

Dry Tortugas Seaplane Florida Keys itinerary

Key West Seaplane Adventures is the only company that flies to Dry Tortugas National Park. They offer flights throughout the day, and you can choose between a half day visit and a full day visit.

A half day trip lasts 4 hours and costs $451 per person, plus the $15 national park fee. A full day trip lasts 8 hours and costs $792 per person, plus the $15 national park fee.

What We Did: We took a morning flight to Dry Tortugas National Park. At 8 am, we flew to the Dry Tortugas and then spent two and half hours exploring Garden and Bush Keys. We returned to Key West at noon and had all afternoon in Key West. Prices for the flights to Dry Tortugas National Park have substantially increased since our visit.

For more information on how to get to Dry Tortugas National Park, with essential planning tips, click here to read our detailed guide.

Things to Do in Dry Tortugas National Park

On a day trip to the Dry Tortugas, your time will be spent on Garden Key and Bush Key, if it is open.

Tour Fort Jefferson, the largest brick structure in the Western Hemisphere. This historic building was used as a fort, a prison, and a coaling station. Touring the fort and walking on top of the walls is one of the best experiences in this national park.

How to Visit Dry Tortugas

View from Fort Jefferson | Florida Keys Itinerary

The Dry Tortugas are also a great spot to go snorkeling. Not only can you see a wide variety of tropical fish and sea corals, but there is also a chance to see sea turtles.

One of our favorite experiences is walking around Bush Key. Along this 1-mile loop, the views of Garden Key and Fort Jefferson are awesome. Note: Bush Key is closed from February through September for bird nesting.

For the full list of things to do, and a lot more photos, read our article Best Things to Do in Dry Tortugas National Park.

How Much Time Do You Need in Dry Tortugas National Park?

For most people, just a few hours are all you need to see the highlights (the half-day seaplane tour is sufficient). If you want to spend a lot of time snorkeling, plan on spending a full day here (take the ferry or the full day seaplane tour).

It is possible to camp at Dry Tortugas National Park, spending multiple days here. This gives you enough time to kayak out to Loggerhead Key. Learn more in our Dry Tortugas post.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: For the best experience, take the first seaplane flight of the day. You will have almost two hours on Garden Key before the ferry arrives, so you will be sharing the park with just a handful of other visitors.

Day 8: Key West

Today is your last full day in Key West. Use this time to visit places still on your to-do list, or to simply relax on the beach before heading home.

Use our suggestions earlier in this itinerary for ideas on how to spend your time today.

Tonight, sleep in Key West.

Day 9: Florida Keys road trip to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

Today you will road trip through the Florida Keys once again, ending in either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. This drive is roughly 170 miles and takes 4 hours without stops.

Earlier on this itinerary, there were a few places we skipped on the drive through the Florida Keys, saving them for today.

Turtle Hospital

The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured sea turtles so they can be returned to the wild. Guests can take a 90-minute tour of the hospital facilities. It’s one of the best things to do in the Florida Keys and great for all ages.

Fibropapillomatosis Sea Turtle

The Turtle Hospital rescues turtles that have fibropapillomatosis, a disease that causes large tumors. These tumors are removed and the sea turtles spend several months at the hospital before being returned to the ocean.

Turtle Hospital Florida Keys itinerary

The Turtle Hospital is located on Marathon Key. To get here from Key West, it takes one hour. I recommend making a reservation in advance, because tours do fill up, particularly those midday. We took the 10 am tour, which gave us enough time to have breakfast in Key West before starting the drive.

Long Key State Park

This small state park has a short nature trail, the Golden Orb Nature Trail, that makes a 1.1-mile loop through mangrove swamps. We did this in 2021 and a lot of the mangroves were damaged during the 2017 hurricane. It’s worth it for those who like nature trails and see mangroves, if you haven’t seen them yet while in the Florida Keys.

Lunch at Morada Bay Beach Café or Marker 88

If you skipped Morada Bay Beach Café earlier this week, or loved the experience and want to repeat it, here’s your chance. This restaurant serves great food and drinks, right on the beach.

Farther up the road, on Plantation Key, is Marker 88. It has a similar vibe to Morada Bay. Alfresco dining, right on the beach, with more good drinks and good food. They recently underwent a major renovation and have two tikis, 14,000 feet of event space, two boat docks, and beachfront tables. This would be a nice spot the spend the entire afternoon.

Go Snorkeling at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Key Largo is one of the best places to go snorkeling or diving along the Florida Keys. You can take 2 to 4-hour snorkeling trips of the John Pennekamp reef. One of the highlights here is seeing the famous statue “Christ of the Deep.”

Tonight, sleep in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Day 10: Fly home

Today, fly home or continue to your next destination.

Florida Travel Guide

Florida Keys Itinerary #2

7-Day Road Trip Itinerary: Miami/Ft. Lauderdale to Key West

This is a shorter version of the above itinerary. If you only have a week, you have just enough time to visit all three national parks, road trip through the Florida Keys, and spend some time in Key West.

This Florida Keys itinerary is done point-to-point. Fly into Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and out of Key West. You will pick up your rental car in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and drop it in Key West.

Starting near Miami and ending in Key West is the most popular direction for a point-to-point Florida Keys road trip. It’s great ending in Key West, with its laid-back vibe, beaches, restaurants, bars, and sunsets. This also tends to be the more expensive route, since rental car drop fees can be higher in this direction.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: Before finalizing the direction you plan to go, research rental car prices, drop fees, and flight costs for road tripping through the Florida Keys in both directions. By traveling one way, you will have a rental car drop fee. It is usually (but not always) cheaper to start in Key West and drop the car in Miami or Fort Lauderdale (rather than starting in Miami and ending in Key West).

Ideally, plan to arrive by midday, so you can spend the afternoon and evening in Miami or South Beach. Tonight, sleep in Miami, South Beach, or Homestead.

Spend the day at Everglades National Park (refer to day #2 above). Tonight, sleep in Homestead.

Spend the day at Biscayne National Park (refer to day #3 above). If you do a half-day morning tour of Biscayne, you can drive to Key Largo in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day here. Tonight, sleep in Homestead or Key Largo.

Day 4: Florida Keys road trip

Drive from Homestead or Key Largo to Key West, visiting sights along the way that interest you. For more information, read our Florida Keys Road Trip Guide or refer to day #4 and day #9 in the itinerary above. Tonight, sleep in Key West.

Day 5: Key West

Spend the day in Key West. If it is your first time in Key West, don’t miss the Hemingway House, a visit to one of Key West’s beautiful beaches, and the bars on and around Duval Street.

Day 6: Dry Tortugas National Park

Today, day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, either by seaplane or on the Yankee Freedom Ferry. Tonight, sleep in Key West.

Florida Keys Itinerary #3

7-Day Road Trip Itinerary: Key West to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

This itinerary is done point-to-point from Key West to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. If you find that rental cars and/or flight prices are cheaper to do it this direction, this 7-day itinerary is simply the reverse of the itinerary above.

Day 1: Arrive in Key West Day 2: Key West Day 3: Dry Tortugas National Park day trip Day 4: Florida Keys road trip Day 5: Everglades National Park Day 6: Biscayne National Park Day 7: Fly home

Best Time for this Florida Keys Itinerary

The best time for this Florida Keys itinerary is between November and March, when the weather is cool and rainfall is low. December through February is peak season in the Florida Keys for visitors, so expect larger crowds and more expensive prices for hotels during this time. I also recommend reserving your activities and restaurants in advance.

From June through October, expect hot, humid weather. Tropical storms and hurricanes can occur during this time, which can disrupt travel plans.

In recent years, we did this same road trip in both February and December. February is an awesome time to visit the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, since mosquitoes are at their lowest during this time. In December, we learned that mosquitoes can still be quite annoying in Biscayne National Park.

In December, Key West is decorated for Christmas, making this a very festive time to visit. Plus, crowds tend to be a little lower just before Christmas, making this a great time for this Florida Keys itinerary, if you want to visit during the winter months with lower crowds.

Additional Costs for this Florida Keys Itinerary

In addition to the prices I listed above for activities in the Florida Keys, here are a few more items to budget for.

Rental Car: Rental car prices can range from $75 to $200 per day, depending on the time of year you visit, how far in advance you make your reservation, and the type of vehicle you plan to rent. If you are doing a point-to-point trip, you will also have a drop fee. This is typically several hundred dollars and in general, this fee is cheaper if you start in Key West and end in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.

Hotels: Key West has gotten to be quite expensive in recent years. A mid-range hotel at double occupancy can start at $400 to $500 per night. Prices are cheaper in Homestead, averaging about $250 per night for a mid-range hotel.

Food: Prices in Key West and along the Florida Keys are typical for other places in the USA, averaging about $10 to $18 per plate.

Love this list. One to add for breakfast halfway down. If you like canal-front dining with excellent food, then consider Made 2 Order located at MM 90.6 on the east side of the road directly across from Tavernier Creek Marina. My oldest sister has lived in Miami since the 1980s, and they go down for breakfast about once a month. In particular, the Tropical French Toast is fantastic (IMO). We spent a week in Naples a while ago, and we literally drove over for this breakfast (and to show the visitor kids with us the keys and Miami). FYI – you have to go early. This place is known by the locals and fills up. We get there at 8AM when they open. Walk around to the back outside rather than having to walk through the inside like a tourist…

Hi Julie !!

Just got back from NM (followed your recommendation and visited White Sands, Carlsbad caverns and Guadalupe). I am thinking of doing a NP in May. Do you think FL is doable in mid-late May? IF so, can i do this as a 5d trip? or is that too much driving? Or would you rather do a trip to CA and check out Sequioa and Redwood?

You have great timing. Over the past few days, I have been writing a series of guides to the best months to visit the national parks. Tomorrow I plan to publish May.   Florida is doable in late May but you will have hot, humid weather. If that’s not a big deal for you (it would be for me 😊), then this is a good road trip to do. In California, Sequoia and Redwood Parks are far from each other (about a 10 hour drive). I think grouping them together is not a great road trip option unless you don’t mind doing a drive that long. Another issue is that the two parks near Redwood (Lassen Volcanic and Crater Lake) sit at a higher elevation and are still cold and not all of the roads are open in May. But you could combine Sequoia and Kings Canyon with Yosemite and maybe even Pinnacles National Park. Another road trip idea is combining New River Gorge, Great Smoky Mountains, and Shenandoah into one road trip. For the May article, check back in tomorrow. Here is the link to our Parks to Visit in April guide and a link as to the best time to visit each national park.   Cheers, Julie

Redwood does make our May list. Sequoia and Kings Canyon can be grouped together but average temps this time of year is still in the 50’s so we recommend them for June.

Ty !! Oops, I meant Kings Canyon and Sequioa. I’ve already done Yosemite last year (and Death Valley and Joshua tree in the last 3-4 months).

Hi Julie, If i aim for 7d (say i land on 13th and fly back late evening 20th) – you think I can do the 7 day itinerary that you have above? with day 7 being me driving back to miami from key west area?

Yes, that should work fine. On day 7, schedule a late afternoon flight to give you enough time to make the drive. OR, on day 6, visit Dry Tortugas in the morning and in the afternoon, drive part or all of the way back to Miami. You could stay in a hotel along the Florida Keys to break up the drive. Cheers, Julie

Perfect ! Ya I was planning to do Dry Tortugas and then start driving back late afternoon and maybe spend a night (or two) in Miami to go check out local sights and scenes

We loved staying in Marathon (or Key Colony Beach) as it was equidistant from the northernmost and southernmost keys for great day trips. Snorkeling at Sombrero Reef was amazing. Also the Dolphin Research Center is a great must see along with your rec of the Turtle Hospital. Being around Marathon kept us close to all these attractions in addition to Sombrero Beach and Bahia Honda for beach days. In Key West, the Lobster Shack has amazing lobster rolls! Paradise Restaurant is also a fun and lively family owned Latin American restaurant there with Columbian, Cuban and Latin Amercian food. Also we did a private catamarran tour with kayaking and snorkeling that was absolutely great with Key West Eco Tours. Robbies is so fun! Just a head’s up for families going to Key West…It is a true party scene there after dark, so just be aware with children.

Hello Sarah. Thanks for writing in and thank you for all of your recommendations and tips! Cheers, Julie

A unique stop along this drive from Miami to Key West, Coral Castle Snack Bar & Coffee Shop features furniture and items constructed from coral rock. Walking through the grounds, visitors will find a piece of coral rock shaped into the form of the state of Florida.

There’s also a sundial and dual-chambered well. But, more eye-catching than these pieces is what the shop is named after – the massive coral rock castle!

The castle weighs 1,100 tons. It was finished in 1941 by one dedicated man who immigrated to the United States from Latvia.

The man, Edward Leedskalnin, is said to have only used simple tools like wedges and chisels to construct the impressive structure and the many others made from coral rock open for viewing on the grounds.

While observing these outstanding pieces of work by Leedskahlnin, visitors can stop by Coral Castle Snack Bar & Coffee Shop for a refresher. Protecting nature and history, Biscayne National Park is a jewel that should not be overlooked on a Miami to Key West road trip!

The largest marine sanctuary in the National Parks System, the park preserves 10,000 years of human history, from the time of prehistoric tribes to that of shipwrecks of explorers scouring for land and gold.

The park is a sight for sore eyes with its shocking blue waters, prosperous coral reefs, and greenery-rich islands.

People travel from all over to dip in Biscayne National Park’s waters, where its marine life ecosystems are flooded with vibrant tropical fish and coral reefs.

From fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming, it’s common to find people hitting the water in Biscayne National Park for a fresh day out in the water for chances to see manatees, dolphins, and sea turtles!

Within the grounds of Biscayne National Park is the Boca Chita Key. On the key is the iconic historic lighthouse that many people launch off from to go snorkeling in the clear blue waters of the park.

For many reasons, the Everglades National Park is one of the most well-known parks in the United States, which of course, makes it an unquestionable stop on our Miami to Key West drive.

It is the largest wilderness east of the Mississippi River and the largest tropical wilderness in the nation.

It protects endangered species such as the American crocodile, the Florida panther, and the manatee. It is also the only place on the planet where crocodiles and alligators coexist peacefully.

As one of the largest wetlands on the planet, the Everglades National Park surprisingly used to be bigger. It used to provide drinking water for over 7 million Floridians.

The park welcomes visitors to enjoy its lush environment with outdoor recreational opportunities like hiking, fishing, bird watching, and camping. Like this airboat tour and wildlife show, boat tours are an exceptional opportunity to travel to Everglades National Park by water to see crocodiles, alligators, and turtles.

This tour, in particular, treats tourgoers with specialty alligator sausage and alligator tail and a show of alligator wrestling techniques used by Native Americans.

Part of the National Register of Historic Places, the park’s creation was designed to protect the only living coral reef in the United States.

The park’s namesake is dedicated to Miami newspaper editor John D. Pennekamp. He contributed significantly to the founding of the Everglades National Park and the up-and-coming John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

This top Key Largo attraction is home to mangrove swamps, tropical hammocks, shore birds, damselfish, barracudas, anemones, and many more marine life species. Key Largo is the dive capital of the world, so do your best to spend some time underwater!

There are recreational opportunities for park visitors to see these vibrant species up close and personal by joining a glass-bottom boat tour, kayaking , canoeing, scuba diving, or snorkeling. The Indian Key Historic State Park is an island once an integrated town in the 19th century. The island was the first county seat for Dade County in 1836.

Today, the Indian Key is an abandoned ghost town with only remaining leftover ruins and structures. When traveling from Miami to Key West, this park is a hot attraction to hit up.

During its active days, Indian Key was where a running business salvaged cargo from shipwrecks that banked in the Florida Keys.

In 1840, Indian Key was attacked by Indians, and many of the town’s structures were destroyed except one building. This ended up in the island being abandoned.

At present, Indian Key Historic State Park is a fun outdoor recreational spot people love to hang out. Anglers test their luck for local catches like Spanish mackerel, tarpon, and bonefish.

The island is accessible by kayak or canoe, with opportunities to see sea turtles and dolphins. Once you reach the island, picnicking, hiking, and snorkeling are all other popular activities to consider while visiting Indian Key Historic State Park.

Then head back to the Overseas Highway and continue driving south on your Florida Keys road trip!

Accessed exclusively by tour or private boat, Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park is nestled on Lignumvitae Key.

The tropical island is flooded with thriving virgin tropical hardwood hammocks as turquoise waters gently crash against its shores. It is a captivating stop on a road trip from Miami to Key West.

The virgin tropical hardwood hammock was common in most of the Upper Keys of Florida, but that is no longer the case. Now, people can view these plants in Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, where they prosper and grow widely.

The backstory of Lignumvitae Key lands with a Miami chemist, William J. Matheson. The chemist purchased the island in 1919, establishing a caretaker’s home, a windmill for electricity, and a cistern for rainwater.

Today, the island acts as Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, with self-guided tours available to explore the secluded island.

A must-stop along this Florida Keys road trip, Bahia Honda State Park is located on Bahia Honda, an island in the lower Florida Keys.

The park is a top-rated attraction when driving from Miami to Key West. On weekends and holidays, arriving early is highly recommended, as the park will close when maximum capacity is reached.

Surrounded by the iconic clear blue waters and sandy beaches of the Florida Keys, Bahia Honda State Park is a paradise of breathtaking sunsets, salty breezes, and sun-touched kisses.

The old railroad bridge in the park was the act of Henry Flagler, who made it his mission to bring the railroad to the Florida Keys.

The mission was a success until a hurricane eventually destroyed the railroad. It then served as an overseas highway but now stands as an iconic landmark, especially the old seven-mile bridge that stretches out stubbornly across the waters next to the newer seven-mile bridge.

From lazing in the sun at Sandspur Beach to swimming in the shocking blue waters and trying water sports, Bahia Honda State Park is a stop worth taking on this road trip from Miami to Key West.

Endemic to the lower Florida Keys, the Key deer are an endangered subspecies of white-tailed deer. The National Key Deer Refuge in Big Pine Key protects this endangered species as a national interest of preservation.

The refuge is a sanctuary for more than the rare and endangered Key deer. Here you can find mangrove forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, pine rockland forests, salt marsh wetlands, and freshwater wetlands. Within this refuge are over 20 threatened and endangered animal and plant species.

Guests are welcome to visit the refuge on their Florida Keys road trip to experience the beauty of these rare species and habitats.

However, we recommend first stopping at the Nature Center for a tour through educational exhibits and other features, including a mangrove aquarium and a Key deer story exhibit.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Renting a Car For Your Florida Keys Drive

Cars driving on the overseas highway in the Florida Keys road trip

We recommend preparing for your rental car in advance for Miami International Airport (MIA). Getting to the car rental places at the airport is easy.

Once you collect your baggage you follow the signs to the MIA Mover that takes you to where the car rentals are.

We recommend booking your car rental in advance with Expedia.

Before purchasing car insurance be sure to check with your credit card company to see if it already included in your perks. If you do have rental car insurance coverage with your credit card, be sure to check to see if you need to have a letter from the credit card company proving your insurance so you don’t end up getting pressured into buying the insurance you don’t need on the spot.

Some rental car companies require this letter proving coverage from your credit card company which is easy to get with a phone call but you need to come prepared.

Florida Keys Road Trip Mile Markers

Mile Market 0 in Key West

On your drive to Key West you’ll be driving along what is known as the Overseas Highway , a 113-mile route that takes you from Key Largo to Key West. Much of the Overseas Highway was actually built on a former railroad and has seen the wrath and damage of hurricanes over the years. By the 1950s this had become the popular route to drive from Miami to Key West and embark on a Florida Keys road trip!

Another interesting fact, once you start your Florida Keys road trip itinerary and drive from Miami to Key West you will notice that there’s alot of talk about Mile Markers . These Mile Markers indicate the location or address in reference to the number of miles north of Key West’s Mile 0.

As the address numbers get smaller, this indicates the further south you’re going closer to Mile Marker 0.

For example, the first stop on our itinerary is Kona Kai Resort Gallery & Botanic Gardens. Their address is 97802 Overseas Hwy. Their street number indicates they are 97.8 miles away from Key West.

Once you get to Key West you can take your photo with the famous Mile Marker 0. These Mile Markers can also indicate how far of a drive it is between your planned stops.

With Google Maps now you don’t need to calculate the Mile Markers yourself but it’s a fun little tidbit of knowledge to know on your drive from Miami to Key West.

Reef Safe Sunscreen

Megan relaxing in a hammock at Kona Kai in Key Largo

The Florida Keys can be hot and the sun is strong down here! This goes without saying, but you need to come prepared with sunscreen. If during your Florida Keys road trip, you plan on getting in the water we urge you to use reef safe sunscreen. Did you know that most sunscreens are filled with chemicals that are toxic and harmful to the environment?

Two harmful chemicals often found in sunscreen are oxybenzone and octinoxate that contribute to coral bleaching. Other harmful chemicals include petrolatum and titanium dioxide.

Shockingly, finding reef safe sunscreen along your Florida Keys road trip isn’t so easy and may require multiple stops, so we urge you to come prepared with your own. We have picked out a few you can purchase online in advance to prepare for your trip below.

Many reef safe sunscreens require a bit more time to ‘apply’ as there is often zinc in the sunscreen, and some even leave a faint white appearance after applying to your skin. We found Thinksport to be one of the easier reef safe sunscreens to apply. Also, if you apply a small amount at a time it’s much easier to apply!

When’s the best time to visit the Florida Keys

Old church house in Key West

The best time to visit the Florida Keys is in the winter months, this is the most popular time because the weather is the most comfortable and people are escaping their cold weather homes to visit one of the best warm winter vacations in the USA .

The spring months are a good time to visit the Florida Keys before the temperatures get too hot and humid and there are way fewer crowds and lower room rates than in the popular winter months.

Hurricane season is between June and November so its a gamble to travel during this time.

Be sure to also check out our guide for the best places to stay in the Florida Keys to help you plan your trip!

Key Largo from above taken along our Florida Keys road trip

On your first day on the Miami to Key West drive, we are recommending you stop at Key Largo to explore the northern Keys extensively. We have recommended where to stay as well as some great activities to enjoy.

We recommend spending some time in Miami before your trip, even if it’s just an afternoon. We recommend checking out the colorful Miami neighborhood of Wynwood if you only have time for one stop!

Kona Kai Resort Gallery and Botanic Gardens

Address: 97802 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo

(~ 63 miles or 1 hour 15 minutes drive from MIA to Key Largo)

Our first stop on our Florida Keys road trip itinerary is a place for rest and relaxation in paradise. There’s nothing more taxing on the body than flying and we like to take it easy on days that involve flights because they suck so much of our energy out of us.

Start your Florida Keys itinerary at Kona Kai Resort Gallery and Botanical Gardens in Key Largo made up of individual cottages on the waterfront. We are recommending using this resort as your base for the next two nights as we explore our days 1 & 2 Florida Keys itinerary attractions.

This boutique property not only has individual charming, beachy cottages for its guests located in a botanic garden but also a gorgeous waterfront location perfect for catching a sunset.

You will find little lizards and iguanas running around the botanic garden as you make your way to the beach on the walkway. The small botanic gardens here are actually one of only two frost-free tropical botanic gardens in the continental US!

With your stay, you get free access to kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and paddle boats . There’s also a pool and hot tub for swimming. Along the water, you can find a dock for sunbathing, sunset watching, and hammocks under the swaying palm trees to relax.

Each of the cottages at Kona Kai Resort Gallery and Botanical Gardens comes with a fully equipped kitchen, so if you do like to cook on vacation you have this option but there are plenty of incredible seafood restaurants nearby.

We recommend spending the first afternoon after flying and driving relaxing by the waterside here with your drink of choice before kicking off the rest of your Florida Keys road trip. Book Now on Booking.com

Dinner at Sundowners

Address: 103900 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo

One of the most popular spots in Key Largo for dinner and sunset is Sundowners restaurant. The restaurant has a full bar and a menu full of local fish dishes located right on the water in the Florida Bay.

This is only a 15-minute drive from Kona Kai Resort, so we ate dinner here before sunset and made it back to Kona Kai’s quiet dock for a more romantic sunset!

Moorings Village in Islamorada from above

On day 2 of our Florida Keys road trip we recommend continuing to explore the northern Keys including Key Largo and Islamorada before continuing the road trip to Key West.

Snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Underwater Christ of the Abyss at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park snorkeling tour

Address: 102601 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo

One of our favorite highlights and first stop on our Florida Keys road trip itinerary involves some of the best snorkeling in the Florida Keys! The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the first underwater preserve in the United States protecting the Florida Keys barrier reef, the only reef system in the continental US.

John Pennekamp State Park includes mangroves you can walk through, seagrass beds, beaches to hang out on,  and the underwater barrier coral reef system you can witness by snorkeling.

Visitors can enjoy walking through the mangroves on a trail, hanging out on the beaches, snorkeling, scuba dive, and kayak. This is a protected area with wildlife, so you will definitely see iguanas basking in the sun, fish, and perhaps even crocodiles just by hanging out around the coastline near the visitor’s center.

We highly recommend reserving a snorkeling tour in advance for one of their multiple snorkeling tours throughout the day. The snorkeling here is very popular and during peak season you will definitely need a reservation.

We went on a snorkeling tour to the Key Largo dry rocks where you can snorkel among the coral reef with tropical fish and visit the Christ of the Deep underwater statue, a 4,000 lb bronze statue placed underwater in 1961.

You can snorkel right up to the statue as the hands reaching above his head are just a few feet below the surface of the water. However, we highly recommend not touching the statue as there is fire coral all over the statue which you will be sorely sorry if you touch.

You can spend a bit of extra time exploring the rest of the park before or after your snorkeling trip before heading off to the next suggestions on our Florida Keys itinerary.

Bring Your Own Reef Safe Sunscreen

Remember at the beginning of this Florida Keys road trip guide where I mention reef safe sunscreen? Shockingly, the visitor center didn’t sell reef safe sunscreen on our visit so you will need to come prepared yourself and plan in advance.

We have picked out a few you can purchase online in advance to prepare for your trip. You can see our suggestions earlier in this guide for the Florida Keys road trip itinerary.

Lunch at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen

Mrs Mac's Kitchen in the Florida Keys

Address: 99336 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo (the second location is just further south by maybe 2 minutes)

A local restaurant everyone loves and worth a stop on your Florida Keys road trip itinerary is Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen. This kitschy joint has two locations just down the road from one another, we recommend trying to stop at the original location at 99336 Overseas Highway unless they are too full and you’re starving.

The original location is much smaller and has the old-school charm to it that made it a local favorite. Inside you will find license plates covering the floor to ceiling on the walls donated by guests who visit. This just goes to show how popular of a place this is that people plan to visit with their own license plate to decorate the restaurant!

The menu offers everything from seafood to comfort food and the Florida Keys’s signature dessert, key lime pie!

This restaurant gained so much popularity they were forced to open a second location down the street. This building itself was made for Instagram painted in pastel pinks and other fun colors. This location is much larger and better for bigger groups or if the line or wait is too long at the original.

We highly recommend saving room for dessert and getting a slice of their key lime pie!

Beer Tasting at Florida Keys Brewing Company

Florida Keys Brewing Company tap selection in Islamorada Florida

Address: 81611 Old Hwy, Islamorada

We love our beer and couldn’t do a perfect Florida Keys itinerary without stopping at least one of the breweries in the area. The Florida Keys Brewing Company is the first brewery in the north Keys and is a perfect place to stop for a cold refreshing beer on a hot day and our first stop on your drive to Key West in Islamorada!

They have a gorgeous tropical beer garden with fans outside that’s a great place to hang out in the early evenings or inside their colorful tasting room where there is a huge selection of their beer to try on tap.

We recommend trying a flight of beer so you can sample a few different of their specialty beers. They have quite an assortment and many infuse some tropical ingredients that are unique to the Florida Keys.

Something we love about this brewery is they often have a limited edition beer on tap that goes towards a local cause. During our visit they had a Double Hibiscus Kolsch made with local honey. Part of their sales go towards the nonprofit organization the Mote Marine Laboratory who is working on the Florida Keys disease outbreak known as the Coral Tissue Loss Disease that has coral mortality rates of 80% putting their reefs at risk of extinction.

We love that they are using their beer and the love of beer to help support local causes. It’s not often you get to drink for a cause!

Sunset and Dinner at Morada Bay Beach Cafe

Dining at Morada Bay Beach Cafe in the Florida Keys

Address: 81600 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada

Our last stop for the day on our Florida Keys road trip is at Morada Bay Beach Cafe . This is the perfect place to unwind after a fun day in the Florida sun and have a delicious meal right along the water under a canopy of palm trees swaying in the tropical wind.

This restaurant and hotel has a gorgeous location right on the water and is the perfect place for a sunset. Dine with your toes in the sand or if it’s too hot you can sit in the indoor area with a waterfront view.

The atmosphere here is inviting and a fun place to enjoy a gorgeous slow sunset over dinner. They have a great variety of fresh seafood dishes. Stick around and enjoy a drink on the sand too.

This location was also used as a filming location for the television series, Bloodline .

Aerial view of the overseas highway on our florida keys road trip

After spending a few great days in the northern Florida Keys we recommend making a few stops on your drive to Key West on your Florida Keys road trip itinerary including lunch that doubles as a place for some great water activities before arriving to Key West.

Along your drive from Key Largo to Key West on the Overseas Highway you will cross the famous Seven Mile Bridge that’s completely surrounded by water. The famous Seven Mile Bridge is one of the longest bridges in the world, spanning seven miles across open water from Marathon to Little Duck Key.

The original bridge which you can see running parallel to it was the most famous because of its narrow lanes passing over a large body of water. It was a dangerous road that required alot of attention when crossing it and has a 2.2-mile section that is now only open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The modern bridge is much safer for vehicular traffic and is absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime experience to drive along a road like this where you’re surrounded by gorgeous blue water below.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

a little bird at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

Address: 92080 Overseas Hwy, Tavernier

Continue your Miami to Key West drive on the Overseas Highway stopping at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center . This is a family-friendly activity where you get to see and experience all kinds of wild bird species while your visit helps fund this wild bird rehabilitation facility to help release injured birds back into the wild.

There are two different facilities here, the Mission Wild Bird Hospital where they accept injured birds and rehabilitate them for release, and the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary where the injured birds who couldn’t fully recover and thrive in the wild have their new permanent loving forever home.

The Mission Wild Bird Hospital is for staff only but there is an education center and gift shop here. We highly recommend visiting The Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary to see all kinds of wild bird species that now call this a forever home. The birds you find here are ones that were injured and couldn’t fully rehabilitate and thrive in the wild on their own.

You can learn a bit about each of the birds here including their name and the backstory of how they ended up here.

There is no set admission for visiting the Wild Bird Sanctuary, but they do recommend a $10 donation per person, or what you can give. This facility and program is a completely nonprofit organization and they keep helping birds from donations from visitors.

We personally fell in love with Booby. He is a masked booby bird who had a bold personality during our visit. It turns out he is a little local celebrity because a few years back the Florida Keys Brewing Company had a limited edition beer named after him and a portion of the proceeds come back to help fund the Wild Bird Center.

What’s great about visiting stops like this along your Florida Keys road trip is that just by visiting you are helping the cause and rehabilitation for animals by paying a small fee.

There are all kinds of interesting birds who are here that you’d probably have a very slim chance seeing in the wild, we highly recommend this stop on your Miami to Key West drive.

Lunch and Outdoor Activities at Robbie’s of Islamorada

Robbies of Islamorada legend of Scarface

Address: 77522 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada

Our next stop on our Florida Keys road trip itinerary includes another local favorite spot! Robbie’s of Islamorada not only has a great restaurant to eat at but they have all kinds of water activities to enjoy as well as an outdoor shopping market full of fun finds and local souvenirs.

Depending on your arrival time we recommend getting lunch first at the Hungry Tarpon restaurant. This waterfront restaurant and bar is in a prime location on Lower Matecumbe Key. We recommend the fish tacos!

While you’re eating you can’t help but notice the people gathering on the dock feeding the tarpon fish. Grab a bucket of small fish and feed the giant tarpon right in the water outside the restaurant! Don’t worry, you won’t be feeding and befriending fish that they serve at the restaurant. No one eats tarpon fish because they are too bony.

The whole backstory and legend of the tarpon fish feeding tradition here goes back decades. The owner of Robbie’s saw an injured tarpon fish where its jaw had been sliced open from a hook. He and his friend stitched him up and took care of him in a tank until he was able to be released back into the water. They called him Scarface because of the big gash in his jaw.

When they released Scarface he didn’t just go away and live on his own, he left and came back with a ton of his friends and now they still feed them. Or that’s at least what they claim the legend to be.

If you still have more time for fun in the sun here you can always check out parasailing, jet ski rentals, kayak or stand-up paddleboard rentals, or just shop around before finishing the drive from Key Largo to Key West.

Drive and Settle in to Key West

Perry Hotel Key West room

Continue your Florida Keys road trip by making your final stop at Key West. Depending on what time you arrive we recommend checking in to your hotel first.

We stayed at the Perry Hotel Key West . This location is a bit outside of where all the action is in Key West, but the hotel property is gorgeous and located right on the water. They have Vespa scooters for rent, a free shuttle that goes to downtown Key West, or since you have a car on your Florida Keys road trip then you have the option to drive yourself.

Book on Expedia.com | Check out rates on Hotels.com

If you prefer to stay closer to town and walking distance to everything we recommend trying one of the gorgeous properties available. Southernmost Beach Resort is a beautiful 4-star hotel located near the southernmost point of the continental US marker!

Dinner at First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery

First Flight Beer in Key West

Address: 301 Whitehead St, Key West

After completing your Key Largo to Key West drive and are continuing on your Florida Keys itinerary, we recommend getting settled into your hotel then heading out to enjoy dinner at this historic location/great restaurant and brewery!

First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery is located in the building where the first PanAm international ticket was sold and the birthplace of Pan American World Airways in 1927.

You can see traces of aviation history here if you look closely as well as artifacts around the restaurant deor. They have their own beers on draft here and a delicious menu of seasonal dishes.

We loved the canopy garden seating in the evening too as it had a tropical atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re really on vacation.

The Hemingway House in Key West

A Florida Keys itinerary wouldn’t be complete without spending at least an entire day enjoying all the incredible things to do and see in Key West . We are going to list some of our favorite activities to enjoy on Key West to pick and choose what you’d like to see.

All of these attractions we mention in this guide are within walking distance from one another. If you find yourself tired of walking you can always use the free Duval loop shuttle to get you close to all the locations you’d want to visit.

The Hemingway Home and Museum

a cat in the bathroom at the Hemingway Home in Key West

Address: 907 Whitehead St, Key West

Easily one of my favorite stops on our entire Florida Keys road trip was the Hemingway Home and Museum . Did you know that Ernest Hemingway spent 10 years of his life here in Key West? His old home is now a museum open to the public, but it’s not just the prolific author’s home that attracts visitors.

The Hemingway Home is famous for having its collection of polydactyl cats who live here to this day. During Hemingway’s years in the house, he started with one cat with extra toes and in its peak had between 50-60 cats on the property.

To keep the tradition alive, the museum keeps that many polydactyl cats on the property where they live their lives like the royalty they are at one of the most famous and nicest houses in Key West.

The cats are as much of the history of this house as Hemingway himself. I could have spent all day here!

There are 30-minute guided tours often, but you don’t need to join one to enjoy the property. The admission is $14 for adults and $6 for kids, be sure to bring cash as they do not take credit cards.

Forgot cash? There are ATMs near the Hemingway House & Museum at 724 Duval Street and another at 1075 Duval Street.

If you’re a huge Hemingway fan, check out this Hemingway’s Life and Local Food Walking Tour which takes you to various landmarks that were important to Hemingway in Key West while eating local specialties along the way!

Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Flamingo in the butterfly conservatory in Key West

Address: 1316 Duval St, Key West

Another great stop in Key West is the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory . What looks like a house on the outside is actually a butterfly conservancy and tropical garden with little critters from birds to butterflies.

Walk through the tranquil tropical gardens while witnessing some of the most beautiful tropical creatures who are inside.

There are also two rescued flamingos who call this conservatory home that are a treat to see up close in person!

General admission tickets are $15 with lower rates for seniors, military, and kids, children under 3 get in for free. Keep in mind the last admission is at 4:30 PM so plan your visit to this awesome Florida Keys attraction accordingly.

Southernmost Cultural Food & Walking Tour

Key West Food tour conch fritter

If you’ve followed our blog long enough you know how we feel about food tours. We LOVE THEM! This is one of the best ways to try a bunch of different local dishes/restaurants and learn the history of where you’re visiting.

The Key West Food Tours journey is 3 hours long stopping at some of their favorite local spots to eat from Cuban cuisine to a great rum bar with a history dating all the way back to the prohibition.

This is a great way to spend lunch during your Florida Keys itinerary stop in Key West, be sure to secure a reservation in advance. They also offer cocktail tours if that’s more up your alley!

Southernmost Point of the Continental US

Southernmost-Point-of-the-continental-US-in-Key-West

Address: 1400 Whitehead St, Key West

A road trip to Key West wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Southernmost Point in the Continental USA! This is one of the most popular photo spots in Key West at the Southernmost Point Buoy.

You’ll surely see a line here waiting to get a photo unless you come early in the morning. This spot signifies the southernmost point in the continental United States, but if you are a person who really likes to focus on technicalities, the actual southernmost point is located a few blocks over on private property and is inaccessible to visitors.

Walk down Duval Street

The Strand on Duval Street in Key West

Easily the most iconic street in Key West is Duval Street. This is where you will find tons of bars and shopping in what feels like the Bourbon Street of Key West.

This commercialized street connects the Southernmost Point to Mallory Square with plenty of places to stop along the way if you want to drink, dine, or shop.

A few highlights on Duval Street include:

  • Grabbing a drink at bars like Hog’s Breath Saloon or Green Parrot Bar
  • Explore the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
  • Join a Key West haunted pub crawl tour through Duval Street
  • Ride the famous Conch Train which takes you through historic stops like Duval Street while learning about the history of Key West and its attractions!
  • Embark on the Ghosts of Key West walking tour on Duval Street and learn the haunting history of Key West and see Robert the Doll!

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

The shell warehouse at mallory square market in key west

This waterfront square is another great stop in Key West on your Florida Keys road trip. There are outdoor and indoor shops, museums, and waterfront outdoor entertainers who gather here. This scene gets lively in the evenings, especially during peak season and is a fun place to gather.

Along the water from two hours before sunset until sunset is known as the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square.  This is when all the performers come out and where many gather to enjoy the sunset together. It’s actually an official thing here!

And while you’re here, if you’re interested in shipwrecks and the treasures on old ships, check out the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum which is located right here too, this museum is filled with treasures found from shipwrecks off the Florida Keys and Key West!

Truman Little White House

Truman Little White house in Key West

There are many famous historic homes in Key West, you’ll notice this as you’re walking around and see a plaque for many different houses explaining who lived there and why it’s a historic landmark. One of the most famous, besides the Hemingway Home is the Truman Little White House .

This was the winter home for Truman during his presidency. Truman wasn’t the only US president who used this house though, Taft, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Carter, and Clinton all used this home during their presidency as well used as a facility and a vacation home.

There is a museum inside if you wish to learn more, if not this is just a fun stop while wandering Front Street, one of the most gorgeous streets to walk down filled with historic homes and lush greenery.

Cinema Tropic in Key West

The Key West road trip section is now complete, now that we spent time doing all the spectacular activities offered here we recommend spending your last days making your way back up to Miami for your departure and complete your Florida Keys road trip itinerary with more fun stops along the way.

We stopped in Marathon which is an hour north of Key West and another beautiful place to stop on your Florida Keys itinerary.

You can spend the morning in Key West and head towards Marathon around lunch time. This would also depend on what time your appointment is at the Turtle Hospital. If you’ve had enough of Key West we recommend scheduling in some extra downtime relaxing at the resort we recommend staying at in Marathon.

Breakfast at Blue Heaven

Megan outside of Blue Heaven in Key West

Address: 729 Thomas St, Key West

Don’t leave Key West just yet, you need to try one of the most famous brunch spots in the Florida Keys. Blue Heaven is located on the best foodie street in Key West, Petronia Street (and the corner of Thomas Street) and is a crowd favorite.

This place is steeped with island history from being a place where Hemingway himself attended the boxing matches, being a brothel, to a cock fighting location. While this place is far from that today, you can still see traces of its history if you look closely, it is said you can see the peep holes in the building for those who used to come for the brothels.

This jungle garden hang out spot gives you the chance to eat with the sand beneath your toes without being on the beach. They have a full bar and serve up some tasty Floridan-Caribbean dishes for brunch including lobster benedict and shrimp grits!

Turtle Hospital

a crowd watching a turtle at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon

Address: 2396 Overseas Hwy, Marathon

The Turtle Hospital is one of the best stops and most popular stops on a Florida Keys road trip. This turtle hospital treats injured endangered sea turtles who are brought to the facility. This is where they are rehabilitated and released back in the wild or if not, they are looked after the rest of their lives here.

The Turtle Hospital does require a reservation to join a 90-minute guided tour teaching you about the endangered species you’ll witness in the Turtle Hospital, see the facility where they are treated, and see the open tanks of water where the sea turtles are living until they are healthy again to be released back in the water.

Your admission goes to funding this nonprofit facility and if you wish to donate more you can. We recommend calling a few days in advance or in peak season maybe even a few weeks in advance to make sure you can grab a spot on the tour.

Call the Marathon Turtle Hospital to reserve your spot on a tour (305) 743-2552

Lunch at Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar

lionfish sashimi with gorgeous presentation at Castaway waterfront restaurant and sushi bar

Address: 1406 Ocean View Ave, Marathon

Our next stop on our Florida Keys road trip itinerary for a meal is a restaurant that is doing something great for the local marine environment at Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar . During recent years, non-native lionfish have been threatening the marine environment off the Florida Keys.

The lionfish is native to Indo-Pacific waters and it’s a mystery how they found themselves here in the Florida Keys. They are an invasive species that are capable of causing the extinction of native plants and animals. The spines on the lionfish are venomous and can sting. This makes them have very few predators. In addition, they have a very rapid reproductive rate and they eat alot.

The lionfish were quickly wiping out young populations of fish which were damaging to the entire biodiversity of the area. Local fishermen are doing what they can to hunt the lionfish and serve it on menus because its actually a quite delicious fish to consume.

However, that is also difficult because the only way you can really hunt lionfish is by spearfishing in deeper waters making it a hard fish to hunt in large quantities.

Castaway’s owner John fishes himself for lionfish that are served in the restaurant as sushi rolls. This is not only a great way to try lionfish but to help the local biodiversity in the waters here in the Florida Keys.

They offer dozens of beer on tap, an extensive sushi menu, and a regular seafood menu to choose from. This is a great stop for slow lunch right on the water and we recommend trying the lionfish while you’re here!

Relax at Isla Bella Beach Resort

Lounging at Isla Bella Beach Resort in Marathon in the Florida Keys on our Florida Keys road trip

Our final stop on our Florida Keys Road trip itinerary is the perfect place to unwind and reminisce on all the good times you had on your vacation. The incredible waterfront Isla Bella Beach Resort is the perfect place to do it.

Their waterfront villas are gorgeous and comfortable, a great way to pamper yourself before the end of your trip. There are several pools on the property as well as beachside cabanas you can hang out and relax in.

The views here are incredible and relaxing. There’s also a beachside bar with slightly overpriced drinks, but you’re paying for the location here! And an Italian restaurant on site.

If you don’t want to stick around for dinner they do offer bicycles you can borrow from the property to explore anything nearby.

Another good place to stay in Miami, and where we recently stayed, is this hotel Uma House by Yurbban South Beach . It is located in South Beach, but not right on the beach.

The hotel is new, has a great location, and is an easy walk to South Beach and restaurants. It is a super cute smaller hotel that has room options with separate bedrooms, which are great for families traveling with kids in Miami.

3. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – (Mile Marker 102.5)

This Florida State Park was the first underwater park in the United States and covers about 70 square nautical miles. At John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, there are mangrove swamps to kayak and hammocks to lounge in, but the main draw to the park is what lies beneath the surface.

Under the waves, you’ll find beautiful coral reefs, plenty of sea life, and even an underwater sculpture. In addition to the natural wonders, the visitor center also has a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium filled with some of the same sea life you’ll find in the state park.

If you have time, this is our favorite snorkel trip in the Florida Keys at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.  A glass bottom boat tour is a must, book this really good, and super cheap boat tour .

Before or after visiting the state park, stop at Alabama Jacks, our favorite tiki bar in Key Largo. If you are looking for another nearby state park, just a few minutes’ drive away is Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, which is at mile marker 106.

Where to Stay Between Miami and Key West

Most people rush their drive down to Key West, which is deserving of your time, but there are lots of things to see in the Northern and Middle Keys, too.

  • Southernmost Beach Resort – Key West

4. Spiegel Grove Ship Wreck (about 6 miles offshore from Mile Marker 102)

This massive Navy ship sits about 6 miles from the shore of Key Largo and is one of the top dive sites in the Florida Keys.

In 2002, it was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef and home for marine life. At the time of the sinking, the 512 ft ship was the largest ship ever to be intentionally sunk for use as an artificial reef for scuba diving. It is a must for divers visiting the Florida Keys.

5. Cruise on the Africa Queen (Mile Marker 100)

Movie buffs will surely want to pull over to take a scenic ride through the canals of Key Largo aboard the ship from the movie, The African Queen .

On the weekends’ hundreds of boats gather for an informal party in the crystal clear waist-deep water! You can charter a boat of the day and enjoy this unique local party.

10. Islamorada Beer Company (Mile Marker 82)

You can’t miss the bright yellow building that make up Islamorada Beer Company and their adjoining distillery. Pull up a seat at the bar and grab a flight of tasty beers from the long list of brews.

Their IPAs were pretty solid, and it was fun to try some of the beers that included regional ingredients and local flare.

Best bars in Islamorada

11. cheeca lodge & spa (near mile marker 82).

After a long day of driving, nothing works out the kinks like a good massage. Here at Cheeca Lodge , they have one of the best spas in the Florida Keys.

Indulge in a massage on your way to Key West and make time to have lunch at the Atlantic Edge restaurant on the property, with great views of the sea.

12. Florida Keys Brewing Company (Mile Marker 81.5)

You don’t have to go very far between stops on a road trip from Miami to Key West to find fun places to grab a drink.

Also, one in Islamorada is the Florida Keys Brewing Company, which is one of the top breweries in the area. Their bottle cap tiled beer garden and taproom are surely worth pulling over for in your voyage down the Keys.

13. Feed the Tarpon at Robbie’s Restaurant (Mile Marker 77) – One of the Best Stops

One of our favorite stops on our Florida Keys road trip was Robbie’s Restaurant. Where else in the world can you have a 5-foot-long fish jump out of the water to grab a fish from your hand?

Robbie’s is famous for its terrapin feeding, which started after trying to nurse an injured fish back to health. You can buy a bucket of “fish food” to feed the terrapin, but just be careful. These fish are always hungry!

They also make some great food. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We have eaten all three meals here. This is a must visit stop for us every time we drive to Key West. The food is really good value for the price.

14. Dolphin Research Center (Mile Marker 59)

The Dolphin Research Center provides a forever home for animals that have been recused and rehabilitated but can’t be released back into the wild.

The research center was established in 1984 by Jayne & Armando Rodriguez as a non-profit to provide a habitat for dolphins and educational experiences for visitors.

15. Turtle Hospital (Mile Marker 48.5)

The Turtle Hospital started helping everyone’s favorite sea creatures back in 1986. Since then, they have rehabbed and released more than 1,500 turtles back into the water surrounding the Florida Keys.

On your road trip in the Keys, you can stop in and see the turtles that are currently being treated on one of their 90-minute tours that start on the hour from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

16. Seven Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47-40)

One of the most impressive bridges you’ll ever drive across is located on the west end of Marathon in the Middle Keys.

As the name implies, this bridge spans seven miles across the sea, and in some spots, it’s so long and straight you can’t see the end of it.

Here, you’ll also find a walking bridge that was once a railway – it spans this stretch, too. However, in 2019, it’s under construction and not open the entire length.

For some really good views of the Seven Mile Bridge, head to Sunset Grille & Raw Bar in Marathon. This is one of the best restaurants in Marathon and our favorite place to watch the sunset in Marathon.

Aerial photo of the beach at Bahia Honda State Park Key West

17. Bahia Honda State Park (Mile Marker 37)

When putting together your Key West drive map, make sure to save an hour or part of the day to explore Bahia Honda State Park. This state park is one of the best state parks in the Florida Keys.

Bahia Honda State Park has some of the best beaches in the Florida Keys. The entire state park is over 500 acres and offers great snorkeling opportunities.

Head to the concession stand for snacks, kayak rentals, and information on their snorkeling tour to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Bahia Honda State Park is less than half an hour’s drive from Marathon.

If you’re driving from Miami to Key West in an RV or campervan, there are three campgrounds at Bahia Honda State Park with a total of 80 campsites.

There are even three cabin rentals at Bahia Honda State Park, but your car must be able to go under the Bahia Honda Bridge with a max height of 6 feet 8 inches.

Reservations for camping at Bahia Honda State Park and cabins are in high demand. Reservations can be made 11 months in advance.

18. No Name Pub (Near Mile Marker 30)

This pub with no name is worth the short detour off of the Overseas Highway near the key that shares the “No Name” name. This place is full of kitsch, with the walls and ceilings covered in dollar bills.

It’s one of those old-time places that they just don’t make anymore. If this sounds like your kind of place, be sure to build it into your road trip itinerary for a drink or a bite to eat.

Renting a Car in Florida

Some people drive their own car from their hometown all the way to Key Wet. Some people rent a car in Miami and drive from Miami to Key West. Some people rent a car in Key West and drive to Miami.

We have taken several Florida road trips driving from Wisconsin down to Key West. We also rented a car in Miami and then started our Key West drive from there, and then flew home from Key West. There is no right or wrong way.

We use this car rental company when renting a car in Florida. They have the best prices, free cancelation, and no hidden costs.

We have found that it is best to fly into Miami, rent a car in Miami , drive from Miami to Key West, and fly home from Key West.

If time is not a problem, it is cheaper to return the rental car to Miami, and flights from Miami are almost always cheaper than flying out of Key West airport.

Where to Eat in the Upper & Middle Keys

Sol by the sea.

Fine dining with unobstructed sunset views in Key Largo at the Playa Largo Resort & Spa. It’s an excellent place for a special dinner or to celebrate being in the Keys! Many of the dishes here take hints of Caribbean Influences.

Mrs Mac's Kitchen Key Largo Florida outside of the restaurant

Mrs. Mac’s

An upper keys icon serving up classic dishes with an easy-going flare that made the Keys what they are. This place is a must for breakfast or brunch before continuing your Key West Road Trip.

It is one of the best restaurants in Key Largo for sure.

Atlantic’s Edge

Located at the Cheeca Lodge, Atlantic’s Edge is the perfect place for lunch or dinner with fantastic ocean views. We highly suggest the fresh fish tacos and salad if you are looking for a lighter lunch.

Chef Michaels

Chef Michaels is one of the best upscale restaurants in the Upper Keys. If you can get a reservation, we highly recommend it. They are known for their fresh seafood and steaks at Chef Michales.

Hungry Tarpon Restaurant

The Hungry Tarpon Restaurant is located at the famous Robbies of Islamorada for feeding the tarpon. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat or drink before or after feeding the tarpon.

We stopped in for breakfast. Portions are large, the food is tasty, and it’s a great value.

The Lower Keys

As you make your way further south, the Keys become less populated and more natural until you get to the final few islands, like Key West.

While there may not be as many pull-offs with signposts, there are still many natural places to explore in this more rugged and wild stretch of the Florida Keys.

Keep your eye out for nice beaches like Bahia Honda and many places to put a kayak in the water.

Best Things to Do in Key West on a Road Trip

Once you reach Key West, you’ll have enough things to do to fill a few days and then some.

We compiled a Key West itinerary and compiled a shortlist of our favorite things to do in Key West to help you make the most of your next road trip.

Sunset Sail in Key West

One of the best things to do after a journey down the Florida Keys is to sit back and let someone else do the driving or sailing rather aborad a sunset catamaran cruise.

We sailed on this sunset sail with a full bar and live music with Sebago Watersports , and we highly recommend them. Sit back, enjoy a nice cold beverage, and watch sun set over the Gulf of Mexico.

Durty Harry's Key West Bar

Explore Duval Street at Night (and Day)

Duval Street is to Key West, as Bourbon Street is to New Orleans. While only slightly tamer (certain festivals excluded), Duval Street has a reputation for great Key West nightlife .

Just about any night of the year, you can find great live music, fun, and entertainment. The weekends are when the real parties are, while regional visitors are also coming down to partake in the parties.

If it is your first time in Key West, we suggest joining this Key West Pub Crawl . It will give you the lay of the land and include five drinks, and you’ll probably make a few friends to join you out later that night.

However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to see on Duval Street while the sun is out. This historic street is home to a number of great art galleries, shops, and attractions – plus, you’re on vacation, and the bars are open during the day too!

Kayaking with Lazy Dog

We went on this Key West Mangrove Kaying tour with Lazy Dog . In our opinion, it was one of our favorite tours in Key West.

Grab a paddle and head out into the mangroves kayaking. You can rent kayaks here or take a guided kayak tour, which will bring you to the beautiful backwaters of Key West.

On one of their tours, you’ll paddle through mangrove creeks with blueish-green water, at some points only a few inches deep.

You’ll have a chance to spot all sorts of wildlife above and below the surface. Nurse sharks, jellyfish, and sea birds are frequently seen while kayaking in the lower keys. As a bonus, on some tours, you can even bring your dog!

Hemingway House

The world-renowned author Ernest Hemingway called Key West home for most of the 1930s. During his time in the Keys, his most successful books were published.

While in Key West, you can visit the home he shared with his wife of the time, Pauline. The Hemingways no longer live here, but descendants of Hemmingway’s 6-toed cats can still be found in the house and garden.

You can join this Hemingway Food and Walking tour . It starts outside the Hemingway House (it does not go inside the house, so you’ll have to do that on your own).

The tour follows in Hemingway’s footsteps, giving you a glimpse of his life and the history of Key West.

Stop in for a Drink at Sloppy Joe’s

A Key West trip would not be complete without a stop at Sloppy Joe’s! It is always busy, but the service is good and efficient.

It was made famous by one of Key West’s most memorable residents, Ernest Hemmingway, who frequented the bar and allegedly had a hand in naming the place.

Today, you won’t find Hemmingway, but you will find a big, open, lively bar with live music and food.

However, if you visit in July, you might see Hemmingway or at least a really good doppelganger at the annual Hemmingway Lookalike contest held at Sloppy Joe’s.

If you join the Hemingway Food and Walking tour , you will visit Sloppy Joe’s, as it is an important stop.

They are also super child friendly. On our second Key West trip, our son was one, and on our last trip to Key West, we had a three-year-old and one-year-old!

Another Key West travel tip – Sloppy Joe’s serves really good virgin drinks! I was pregnant on our first Key West road trip, and it was a nice, tasty surprise to see on their menu.

Key Lime Pie at Kermit’s

While every storefront from Mile Marker 118 to the furthest piers in Key West all claim to have the best Key Lime Pie , Kermit’s is the real deal.

Don’t miss this Key West institution on your Key West road trip! For a mid-day snack, be sure to grab a chocolate-dipped frozen slice of Key Lime pie on a stick. YES – it’s as good as it sounds.

wooden boardwalk leading out to Smathers Beach - One of the best beaches in Key West

Smathers Beach

This deep sandy beach located on the southern shoreline of Key West is arguably the best beach on the island .

Despite its stunning white sand, it’s not bursting at the seams with visitors. During most times of the year, you’ll have no problem finding a spot to lay your beach towel.

Southernmost Point Marker

This painted concrete buoy is a popular photo spot that marks the piece of land furthest south in the Continental United States. From here, it’s said only to be a short 90 miles to Cuba.

Snapping a selfie at the Southernmost Point Marker is a must on a Florida Keys road trip. A little Key West travel tip – go early!

The line to get your photo gets super long. If you go before 9 a.m., there are very few tourists waiting. This way, you can take a few photos.

Dolphin Watch and Snorkel with Honest Eco on their Electric Boat

Set sail with Key West’s first electric catamaran for a truly memorable eco-friendly experience with local wildlife.

Dolphins are regularly spotted in the water just offshore of Key West, and the snorkeling is good with clear waters.

This is the exact boat trip we took with Honest Eco. Check rates here .

Mile Marker Zero

This spot here ceremoniously marks the end of your Miami to Key West drive. This is the end of the road – Mile Marker Zero.

There are two signs, one on each side of the road – one for the end of the road and one for the beginning.

We suggest joining this guided bicycle tour of Old Town Key West , as it visits several of the stops on this list and more, including Mile Marker Zero.

Romantic Dinner at Latitudes on Sunset Key

Finish off any good road trip in style with dinner at Latitudes, voted one of the most romantic dinner spots in the country.

If you want a table at Latitudes for sunset, you need to make reservations as soon as you start planning your road trip.

Dinner tables are booked months in advance. If you have less time, you can also dine here for lunch, but you won’t get the full effect without the sunset, but still some great food.

Scallops at Matt's Stock Island Kitchen restaurant in Key West

Where to Eat in Key West

There’s no shortage of great food in Key West. We were really surprised at all the good food we had while visiting – we didn’t have a plate that we weren’t impressed with.

In a city full of top-notch restaurants, it can be hard to pick where to go. Make sure to indulge in some fresh fish too. Here are some of our favorite places with the best seafood in Key West.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite restaurants in Key West and standout meals from our recent trip to Key West. Make sure to check out our complete best restaurants in Key West article.

Cafe Marquesa

Our favorite meal in Key West was at Cafe Marquesa. We enjoyed everything we had. Their menu often changes as everything is fresh. We highly recommend the shrimp & grits appetizer and beignets as a dessert.

The restaurant is one of Zagat’s highest-rated restaurants in Key West. The chef, Graham Dailey, has been on Iron Chef and trained under Anthony Bourdain. If you are putting together a Key West map with foodie destinations, Cafe Marquesa should be on it.

Matt’s Stock Island

If you love brunch, you have to go to Matt’s Stock Island for their Sunday brunch. Every Sunday from 10:30 am – 2 pm includes three buffets (including a raw bar), unlimited small plates, and bottomless Bloody Marys & Mimosas.

We dined for dinner one evening as we weren’t in town on a Sunday morning. We started our meal with the crab beignets and scallops & bacon, and each got today’s catch blackened. Make sure to save room for dessert too. The Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream Sammich is where it’s at!

Kermit Key Lime Pie shop

In addition to the pies, Kermit’s is a local’s favorite lunch spot. On the menu are nice wraps and awesome fries for reasonable prices.

Of course, save room for pie because leaving without trying a slice of Key Lime Pie would be a sin!

Latitudes at Sunset Key

If you only have one splurge meal, it should probably be Latitudes out on Sunset Key, and it should be dinner at sunset. If you are looking for one of the best waterfront restaurants in Key West this is it!

As the name of the island suggests, the sunsets here are pretty amazing and make for a special night. Make your reservations well in advance.

Cuban Coffee Queen

Start your day off right with a cup of classic Cuban coffee. This tasty little shop has two locations, one downtown and another by the waterfront.

In addition to coffee, the Cuban Coffee Queen serves up smoothies, Cuban-inspired sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and even desserts. Don’t miss the giant Key West postcard painted on the side of their waterfront location.

Q:) Driving Miami to Key West – When is the Best Time?

A:) There honestly isn’t a bad time. Driving to Key West during the weekdays, you’ll have fewer cars on the road and traffic.

If you are starting in Miami, make sure to check the traffic in Miami. We have always found leaving Miami early in the morning was better.

Once you are out of Miami and by Homestead/Florida City, traffic isn’t an issue. If you leave Miami before 8 a.m., there is a Starbucks in Florida City that you will be driving right by if you need some caffeine. It is about an hour’s drive from Miami to Florida City.

Q:) When is Hurricane Season in Key West and the Florida Keys?

A:) Technically, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 and ends November 30 every year.

Typically, hurricanes in Key West and the Florida Keys are more common from mid-August until mid-October. Remember, Florida is the hurricane capital of the United States.

Miami, Florida Travel Guide

Airports & entry, planning tips, restaurants & eating out, nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations, attractions.

Miami is a city that thrives of nightlife but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of things to do that are family friendly. In fact, a vacation in Miami might even be educational for all travelers, in a fun and not so obvious way.

Whether you plan on spending your time in Miami at the beaches, partying at the Clevelander or at South Beach, or you plan on taking in the cultural and historical aspects of the city, Miami is a place everyone can enjoy.

Key West is a popular travel destination in the US and for many good reasons.

Not only can you visit some great places, like the seaport, one of the many museums, and even the famous Sloppy-Joe’s Bar, you can also bask in beautiful weather and enjoy watersports such as a jet ski tour in the crystal-clear waters.

If you are flying into Miami, you’ll likely land at Miami International Airport , dubbed MIA. This airport is very busy every day of the week and 24 hours a day. In fact, over 1,000 flights depart or return here each day. This means that things can get hectic, but there is usually staff around that can help point you in the right direction.

When leaving the airport, you have several options. If your hotel offers a free airport shuttle, this is going to be your best bet for getting to your accommodations quickly and affordably. If they don’t and you don’t mine ridesharing, there are several shuttle services leaving the airport often. You can choose from SAS Transport Service or Go Airport Shuttle.

If you are flying into Miami from another country, you will need your passport as well as authorization. If you will be staying less than 90 days, which most visiting travelers do, you will need to apply for an ESTA, Electronic System for Travel Authorization . Essentially, this is waiving your visa that you would need if you intend to stay for more than 3 months.

It’s important to keep several things in mind when planning your vacation to Miami. If you have other tips for those who will be visiting the Magic City, or if you have questions about your trip that aren’t answered in this guide, we would love to hear from you in the comments!

Tip #1: Miami vs Miami Beach

The City of Miami and Miami Beach are two different places. While you may want to spend time in both places during your stay, you should choose accommodations in the place where you intend to spend the most time. The easiest way to get from one to the other and back again is with either Uber or Lyft. It’s also the most affordable.

Tip #2: Choose Local & Day Trip Tours

Just as with any city that attracts many travelers each year, there are plenty of tours available. You might want to take a guided tour of several different museums, or of the art district. You can even take a day trip tour away from the hustle and bustle of Miami and head to Key West for a sunset cruise .

Tip #3: Spend at Least One Day at the Beach

Even if you aren’t going to Miami to sit on the beach the entire time, you should spend at least one day there. There are many beaches up and down the coastal areas of Miami and Miami Beach so you’re sure to find one that has the vibe you’re looking for. Don’t really want to sip cocktails all day under an umbrella? Try a more family-friendly beach instead.

Tip #4: Get Wrapped Up in the Cuban Influence

The Latin American influence is everywhere in Miami, from food and drink to music and dancing. Most likely, you won’t get the same authentic Cuban experience anywhere else outside of Cuba so soak in the culture.

Try a cafecito, a strong and delicious Cuban coffee. Be mindful of the caffeine kick, however. Try various Cuban meals. And even if you only go just to listen and watch, step into a Cuban bar or nightclub one night just to get a feel for the flavor.

Tip #5: Safety First

Leave any expensive items you won’t need while you’re out and about back in your hotel room. If you won’t need them on your trip at all, you might want to think about leaving them at home. Try not to flaunt flashy jewelry and or an expensive camera. Not only do these things indicate you’re not local, but they can also make you a target for theft.

Because you most likely won’t be familiar with the areas of Miami you will be visiting, grabbing an Uber or Lyft to get to where you are going is probably the best idea. This way you get where you need to go without getting lost.

You may also want to ensure your health insurance will cover you while you are in Miami. If it won’t, supplemental health insurance plans for travelers is available.

There’s no denying the Latin American influence in Miami. Even if you only pick up a small lunch from a food truck to try a bit of Cuban flare, you should at least try something with the Cuban kick. In Miami, you will find everything from modern restaurants ran by celebrity chefs to food trucks that offer anything you can imagine.

Some of those celebrity chefs at work in Miami are Tom Colicchio at the Beachcraft restaurant and Paul Qui at Pao by Paul Qui. Want a modern throwback? The Wynwood Diner is a modern take on the classic roadside diner. Then you also have gastro-pubs such as Finka Table & Tap .

While there are plenty of nightclubs up and down the beach as well as in several areas of the city, you’ll also find plenty of dive bars with a laid-back vibe as well as some craft brewery options that have finally made their way to Miami.

Craft beer is a newcomer to the nighttime scene in Miami. As a “cocktail town,” Miami is the perfect place to find the classic cocktails alongside new, modern cocktail inventions. No matter what style of late-night entertainment you enjoy, you’ll find it in Miami.

One recommendation: The Ball & Chain . Once a favorite watering hole for the likes of Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and others, this bar and lounge will take you back through history just by walking in the door.

Driving in Miami may be more stressful than helpful. Many locals get frustrated with tourist traffic and many of those who decided to rent a Ferrari or Lambo usually get frustrated with the locals who don’t drive as fast as they want to. This means that renting a car isn’t your best option.

You also won’t want to depend on public transportation. It’s not very reliable and oftentimes won’t get you where you need to go.

The two best options are either a traditional taxi or the modern equivalents, Uber and Lyft. A taxi will most likely cost you much more than an Uber or Lyft ride, and Uber or Lyft will come to pick you up. This is much easier than trying to hail for a taxi.

You’ll find a wide range of accommodations in both Miami and Miami Beach. Luxurious high-rises are just as common as smaller, boutique hotels. If your trip is centered around the beach, you may even want to rent a bungalow.

When staying in Miami for a longer period of time, perhaps a week or more, then home sharing services such as Airbnb are a great option. You get to live like a local and save a few dollars as well, being able to cook a few meals at “home.”

The hotel where a party is always happening is The Clevelander . If you’ve come to Miami to party, that’s where you’ll want to stay. Then there are the classics like the Fontainebleau Hotel with its unique architecture. Frank Sinatra was a regular guest there and even today you may bump into a few familiar faces.

The perfect time to visit Miami is between March and May. If you’re still dealing with the cold and it’s been a long winter, head to Miami for a few days to warm your toes in the sand. The summer months can get pretty hot and humid, but some say that just makes the party even better.

Starting in the fall, you’ll encounter hurricane season so unless you have travel insurance in the event of poor weather, booking your trip to Miami in the Fall may not be best.

However, it doesn’t matter when you visit, there will always be something going on in Miami. Miami Fashion Week and the South Beach Wine & Food Festival are popular, annual events. If you’d like to visit during the time of a specific event, there’s really not a horrible time to visit.

Snorkeling, scuba diving, and other watersports are a popular activity for families, couples, and groups alike. The waters off the beaches of Miami and Miami Beach are known for being clear and cool, perfect for enjoying the sight of some beautiful marine wildlife.

The art scene is huge in Miami. There are many galleries, and art museums as well, around the city. However, most are located in the art district. There are tours that can take you to several of these locations. Sometimes you can even get discounted entry into several locations all for one, bundled price.

Best Kayaking Spots in South Florida: the Keys, Everglades, Gulf Coast & More

R oad tripping through Florida is amazing for so many reasons, one of which is the endless list of kayaking spots in South Florida. Varying from state parks to overlooked rivers, and even subtropical kayaking through mangroves, any skill level paddler can find any number of options for getting on the water in South Florida, and there are even great options for clear kayaking tours if you’re interested.

There are several eco-tourism destinations from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Keys , providing natural alternatives to the bustling coastal cities. The Great Calusa Blueway and the Marco Island region on the Southwest coast give a wide variety of kayaking choices. Our South-Central region provides several excellent freshwater choices, including two of our favorites, Fisheating Creek and Lake Myakka State Park. The Greater Miami area offers one wild and scenic river and some nice paddling in its numerous parks and preserves. The Everglades, Biscayne and Big Cypress offer a much more natural experience within the bounds of National Parks.

Beside what we’re sharing here, there are hundreds more great places to kayak in South Florida. If you want to share your favorite, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to include others’ recommendations and tips!

Easy Kayaking Spots in South Florida

The following spots offer great easy kayaking spots for quick day trips, family outings, or just a more leisurely paddle. Be mindful that most South Florida is known for its hot, humid weather with brutal summers well into the 90s. Winter, while more pleasant, rarely see temperatures below 70 degrees. Moreover, when planning your trip, be mindful of hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November, with September being the peak month.

Indian Key Historic State Park, Florida Keys

While there are an endless number of waterways to choose from in the Florida Keys, Indian Key Historic State Park is a top choice for your visit. A short 20 minutes will get you from Islamorada to a tiny island once the site of a shipwreck salvage business. Common marine life includes dolphins, eagle rays, and manatees. Check out Robbie’s Marina or Backcountry Cowboys for local information and rentals.

Check out this great guide to the Best Places to Kayak in the Florida Keys

Note that while this is a fairly easy option, you’ll need to be sure you’re launching from a smooth waterway, such as the northwest tip of Lower Matecumbe Key. If you head too far north and put in on the narrower channels of the Indian Fill keys, you’ll find a rough current when the tides are at their strongest (mid-tide).

Where to launch:

  • Indian Key Public Boat Ramp
  • Robbies of Islamorada
  • or the Southside Indian Key ramp

The Great Calusa Blueway, Cape Coral

The Great Calusa Blueway is a paddling trail that covers a large area typically divided into three smaller regions. Phase one begins with Estero Bay, characterized by its open waters and spectacular views. The next phase of the trail is Pine Island to Matlacha Pass, home to narrower waters, dense marshland, and the J.N Ding Darling National Refuge. Finishing the trail is the Caloosahatchee River and its tributaries. Beginning paddlers will check out the numerous outfitters located in Phase 2- Pine Island to Matlacha Pass.

This is a SUP friendly paddling area, where the tides and sandbars make for great fun and relaxation, depending on where the water level is at when you’re paddling. This area is just north of Naples and south of Fort Myers, so if you’re planning a trip to Naples and Marco Island, you can easily visit the Great Calusa Blueway for a day.

For more information, visit The Great Calusa Blueway section of Lee County’s website . Maps of each phase can be found on Fort Myers tourism website .

  • Matlacha Community Park

Lake Worth Lagoon, Palm Beach County

Located just outside of Palm Beach, Lake Worth is home to the Snook Islands Natural Area, a protected wetland restoration area complete with a boardwalk, floating dock and kayak launch. Exploring the county’s largest estuary, Lake Worth Lagoon, is best done through local outfitter if you are unfamiliar with the busy nature of the Intracoastal Waterway, Kayak Lake Worth .

There are lots of great things to do in Palm Beach County , including more paddling on the Intracoastal waterway, such as in Jupiter Inlet or Peanut Island. For the best visit, plan two days in the area for some of the prettiest beaches and kayaking in South Florida. This whole area of Palm Beach County is really wonderful for SUP (stand up paddleboarding) as well as being some of the best mellow kayaking in South Florida.

  • Kayak Lake Worth

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo

Key Largo is located in the backcountry of Florida Bay and Everglades National Park , complete with dolphins, crocodiles and birds. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park gives opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, SUP and even glass bottom boats to the reef.

The beautiful scenery is great for beginners and is one of the best places to kayak in South Florida, as the area is free of crowds and power boats. Dusenbury Creek provides an excellent opportunity to kayak through the mangrove tunnels. Watch your head as you go through!

Visit Florida Bay Outfitters or  Out There Key Largo Kayak and Fishing Expeditions for kayak tours of the State Park and surrounding area. For more info on John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, visit their website for kayak rental information, as well as expeditions out to the reef for snorkeling.

Less-visited Kayaking Spots in South Florida

For experienced paddlers visiting South Florida offers countless multi-day excursions into the backcountry full of wilderness and free of human interference. Whether you’re launching your kayak in the Everglades, Loxahatchee River, Bahia Honda Park or Fisheating Creek, you will have to do some planning and be sure mother nature is in good form to allow a paddle. Timing low tides, seasonal considerations such as mosquitoes and heat, open water conditions, and a myriad of other factors will make or break your next paddle. Be sure to plan accordingly.

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Naples

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a great place for kayakers. It stretches across 110,000 acres of pristine mangrove forest, uplands and protected waters, encompassing nearly half of the Collier County coastline. Birders will want to have their binoculars at hand as the area has excellent birdwatching. If you’re visiting Naples and Marco Island , you can’t NOT visit Rockery Bay!

Kayakers have the opportunity to paddle through beautiful mangrove tunnels, mudflats, and intricate oyster reefs surrounded by wildlife, including sea stars, large snails, birds, dolphins and manatee! However, as much of the area is open water be considerate of wind and tides.

For more information on kayaking in Rookery Bay visit the research reserve site for estuary information or to book kayak rentals or a guided tour.

Loxahatchee River in Martin County, Jupiter

The Loxahatchee River is Florida’s first designated Wild and Scenic River (state, not national). This scenic 8.5-mile paddling trail starts at Riverbend Park in Palm Beach County and takes to you Jonathan Dickson State Park in Martin County, designated a Wild and Scenic River.

The canopy of cypress trees gives kayakers a great refuge from the sun, and thank goodness, as you’ll need 5-7 hours to traverse through scenery of wildlife, taking you through freshwater creeks, brackish waters in an estuary, and emptying into the Jupiter Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean.

Book a guided Loxahatchee River kayaking tour here!

Bonus : stop into the Hobe Sound Natural Wildlife Refuge visitor center before or after your kayaking to get up close with local wildlife, including baby alligators, skunks and snakes found in the area.

Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge, Florida Keys

Bahia Honda State Park is part of the Florida Keys and gives picture-perfect island scenery complete with beautiful sandy beaches teeming with vibrant coral reefs. If the waters are calm, we recommend going into the open water and paddling the two-thirds of a mile journey southwest to Spanish Harbor Key.

This part of the Florida Keys is exceptions for wildlife watching . Whether you’re kayaking in South Florida looking for dolphins or hoping for sharks and rays, Bahia Honda and the Railroad Bridge channel are two of the best places to see marine life.

One of the most unique views you’ll find while kayaking in South Florida, the route from Bahia Honda Key and State Park to Spanish Harbor Key takes you along the old railroad bridge, which is one of the most iconic sights in the Florida Keys. You can haul out on the south side of Spanish Harbor Key where you’ll find tidepools and even sandy spots at low tide. Low tide is wonderful for birdwatching in the Florida Keys .

Note : the current through the channel here is fierce sometimes and you’ll want to be sure to paddle far enough away from the bridges towards the open water to navigate safely. Being a strong paddler is very important here and this should not be attempted by novices.

Famous Fisheating Creek, Palmdale

This is where kayaking in South Florida really changes, as Fisheating Creek is the interior. It’s where old Florida meets the subtropical jungle. Paddlers have hyped up Fisheating Creek as one of the most scenic and unique paddles in Florida. The river is full of ancient cypress trees, Spanish moss, air plants, and an abundance of wildlife.

Swimming is not recommended due to the presence of alligators and water moccasins. The 52 mile long river starts in Highlands County and ends at Lake Okeechobee. Upstream from Fisheating Creek Outpost is where most paddlers start their adventure.

For more information on the area, visit Fisheating Creek Outpost’s official website .

National and State Park Kayaking in South Florida

There are 11 National Park sites in Florida and ten times as many state parks. You’ll find that nearly all of them have some sort of kayaking or canoeing option. Many state parks have rental vendors located on site, and there are authorized vendors in Biscayne and Everglades National Parks for rentals and tours.

Check out our guide to Kayaking in Florida State and National Parks here!

Biscayne National Park, Homestead or Islandia

Kayakers visiting Biscayne National Park will find plenty of opportunities to explore the mangrove-lined shorelines and shallow bay waters. The park’s expansive Biscayne Bay is perfect for crossing to Elliott or Boca Chita Keys, and experienced kayakers can find plenty of enjoyable routes to explore.

Tip: due to the size and expansiveness of Biscayne National Park, planning a kayaking trip with the Biscayne Institute is recommended. They are the National Park Service authorized vendor.

Adams Key is the most popular launching spot and a great spot to base yourself and explore the lagoons, creeks and channels to the north in Biscayne National Park. Given the shallow waters, you won’t see motorized vessels in the area and you’ll have the place all to yourself. The paddle if you’re kayaking from Adams Key is long, so be well prepared.

Visit the National Park Services website for more information and regulations.

Where to launch:

  • Dante Fascell Visitor Center – Homestead, FL map here
  • Adams Key parking area – parking not guaranteed

Everglades National Park in Homestead or Everglades City, FL

The biodiversity of the Everglades subtropical setting touches both the Gulf coast and the Atlantic. Kayakers have the option to start on either side when launching on a multi-day excursion. The best way to take in Everglades National Park is through the Wilderness Waterway, a trail between Everglades City and the Flamingo area at the southern end of the National Park.

Tide charts will be your savior from getting stuck in mud during low tide. It is recommended to make this trip during the winter or spring, taking full advantage of the winds and fewer chances of severe and unexpected weather. Start in Everglades City in the 10,00 Islands area and end at the Flamingo visitors center. Embarking on this trip is best done through an outfitter as it requires planning and back-country permits.

Our recommended outfitter is Everglades Florida Adventure . If you do want to do this on your own and have the experience and the proper gear and training (there are crocodiles AND alligators), to help you plan your trip, visit the National Park Service website .

We went kayaking in the 10,000 Islands area of Everglades National Park while visiting Naples and Marco Island. It was an easy drive from town to Chokoloskee, and the boat-assisted kayaking tour was remarkable. The wildlife in the mangroves, especially the birds, was beautiful and the final destination of Rabbit Key was just WOW.

Go out with Everglades Area Tours for this specific experience. You won’t be disappointed!

The other aspect of kayaking in Everglades National Park is going through the river of grass. There are only a few places where you can launch a kayak and NOT potentially cross paths with airboats. The Turner River launch at the Edge of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve is one of those spots. This is alligator territory for sure, so be prepared to see lots of gators as you explore the area.

  • Gulf Coast Visitor Center
  • Flamingo Visitor Center
  • Turner River Kayak Launch (Big Cypress area)

Cayo Costa State Park on the Gulf of Mexico

A favorite South Florida kayaking spot (maybe even considered central Florida) Cayo Costa is very special and one of the least visited state parks in Florida. Kayakers looking to visit Cayo Costa State Park will find nearly miles of trails winding their way through three distinct ecosystems. Note: Hurricane Ian in 2022 hit the island hard and changed it forever. It’s still beautiful, but kayaking to the cabins and staying there isn’t currently possible (2023).

The highlight of the park is the over 8 miles of undeveloped, natural beaches – perfect for finding seclusion and some well-deserved peace and quiet. The park’s numerous islands and passages between them are teeming with wildlife including manatees, dolphins, alligators, osprey, eagles and many seabirds. One highlight includes the Manatee Hole, a small lagoon where manatees can be seen year-round.

For more information visit the Cayo Costa State Park section of the Florida State Parks website . Here you’ll also find information about camping on the small island.

  • Safe Harbor Pineland
  • Bocilla Island Boat Ramp
  • Gasparilla Island State Park beach

Kayaking in Big Cypress National Preserve

If you’re a kayaker looking for an amazing Florida adventure, be sure to check out Big Cypress National Preserve . Bordering the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress is a diverse marine estuary swamp spanning over 700,000 acres. The preserve is home to a wide variety of plant life and animals, including the endangered Florida panther.

There are plenty of trails to explore, but the best time to paddle the waterways is between November and March when temperatures are more tolerable and the water levels are consistent. There isn’t a National Park authorized vendor at this time (March 2022) but you can launch and paddle on your own. Be sure to register at one of the visitor centers AND to let somebody else know what you’re doing, where you’re going, and when you should be back.

For more information visit National Park Services website, specifically the kayaking and canoeing section . See Canoe Trails info here

  • Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center
  • Turner River Kayak Launch
  • DO NOT LAUNCH FROM MITCHELL LANDING ( map here ) – if you’re unfamiliar with the area and just looking at a map, you’ll see this is a boat launch, but it is for airboats and is not suitable for kayaking or canoeing.

Recommended Kayaking Tours in South Florida

While we realized not everyone visiting South Florida are experienced kayakers, we still believe that a trip into the Everglades National Park is a must. Those pressed on time will enjoy a guided tour with Everglades Adventures Kayak & Eco Tours from the Everglades City entrance. Their team of professionals will take you through mangrove tunnels and cypress ponds full of exotic Floridian wildlife!

Note : there are no guided kayaking tours from the Shark Valley area of Everglades National Park, just the overland tram tour or bike rentals.

If you find yourself in the city of Fort Lauderdale just north of Miami, there are also opportunities to paddle. Fort Lauderdale is part of Broward County, and with over 300 miles of navigable waterways in this county alone, it’s a great place for kayaking in South Florida. Nicknamed the Venice of America, it offers more than just beautiful beaches! We recommend hopping on a kayak and exploring the Venice of America. Sunrise Paddleboards does both SUP and kayaking tours through the nature preserve and they can accommodate nearly any age and skill level.

Regardless of where you are in Florida paddling options abound and are a must do in the Sunshine state!

When to Visit South Florida

Visiting South Florida is a great idea year round if you’re trying to either escape the cold or really want to feel like you’re cooking in an instapot. From Jupiter and Palm Beach county, across to Bradenton and southward, it never really gets too cold, so they are all year-round destinations for kayaking and beach days. In summer though, it really can get hot, so if you’re kayaking in South Florida May through September, plan your paddling to start early in the day.

Check out our guide to visiting the Florida Keys in Summer , as the same principles apply to visiting South Florida for kayaking in summer.

Weather in South Florida

If you’re looking to kayak in South Florida, late October to early March is typically the best time to do so. The weather is usually calmer during this time, and you’re more likely to see migratory birds and other wildlife. Keep in mind that there may be more storms in the later part of March and into April.

For summer trips for kayaking in South Florida, you will need to be wary of storms and the possibility of getting hit by lightning, though rare, is very much possible. The Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1 and lasts until November 30. The season peaks in August through early October as surface temperatures in the Atlantic hit their highest temperatures, but there is usually ample warning if a named storm, or even just a bad weather system, is going to make its way through.

Need to Know for South Florida

Beyond the weather considerations mentioned above, tides and bugs are important factors when planning your trip. Mosquitoes are a common problem in South Florida, so be sure to take precautions during activities and use insect repellent. The weather is conducive to high levels of mosquitoes, so make sure you’re prepared.

Moreover, you’ll want to check the water conditions, specifically the tides, when planning a trip, especially in some of the national parks such as the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. Our advice, trade the bugs for the migratory birds and the muggy stormy weather for cooler temperatures and visit in the winter!

Wildlife While Kayaking in South Florida

One last consideration is wildlife. Florida has incredible creatures that can seem rather intimidating. While you always want to keep your distance, both for your safety and that of the animals, you need to be aware of aggressive or unusual behaviors as you paddle. The most common wildlife you’re encounter while kayaking in South Florida includes alligators, manatees, sharks, turtles (sea and freshwater), dolphins (salt water and Intracoastal paddling), and then crocodiles.

Dolphins and manatees tend to be curious and playful, but don’t often directly approach paddlers. You will want to keep at least 15 feet from manatees and 50 yards+ from dolphins, unless they are coming to you. They don’t often cause problems for kayakers, but you DON’T want to surprise a manatee by sneaking up on it and then experience what’s called a manatee rodeo.

When it comes to sharks and sea turtles, you may see them, both only briefly. It’s not common for either to stick around for long. You may enjoy being escorted through shallow salt water by a sting ray or eagle ray, but again, that’s usually breif.

Being aware of alligators and crocodiles is very important. While neither is usually interested in humans in any capacity, if they are approached, taunted, fed or if they’re protecting young, you’ll want to get away from them pretty quickly. Most of the time when you see alligators they’re disinterested and would rather just sleep, and it’s the same with crocodiles.

Note : crocodiles are found in saltwater and only in a few places, mainly the Upper Keys and western side of the Everglades, but these are wild animals, so they can go wherever they like.

I hope you’re excited to explore and enjoy kayaking in South Florida. It’s really the best way to experience this beautiful place, and the diversity of sights and wildlife make it a paddling bucket list destination.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re happy to help plan kayaking trips!

- Drive straight to Homestead to get a few miles under our belts.

- Stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites Homestead Miami South (mostly because they have interconnecting rooms and the wife and I aren't desperate to have five of us sleeping in one room after so long in transit).

- Probably wake up early and jet-lagged on the Sunday morning, spend a bit of time in the Everglades (including the airboat ride) and then drive on to Duck Key later in the day.

Is this a sensible plan? If so, which airboat companies would you recommend which would be en route and family-friendly? Would it be better to stay in a different town/hotel?

Any advice much appreciated, thank you :)
