In general, the dress code in Napa is referred to as “wine country casual.”

In other words, people tend to dress nicely without going over the top. 

For women, dresses, slacks, blouses, and appropriate footwear are typical – no flip-flops, and no high-heels if you’ll be walking through vineyards as the heels will sink in the soil.

Similarly, men will wear collared shirts, polos, slacks, and close-toed shoes. 

Jeans are also totally appropriate for most Napa venues, including wine tastings.

Just remember to opt for a pair of dark-washed jeans without holes or distressing. 

Beyond this, your biggest considerations when deciding what to wear in Napa should be based on your planned activities. 

Activities in Napa range in formality from outdoor activities to formal dining occasions.

Because of this, it’s a good idea to pack versatile options that can be dressed up or down. 

For example, a flowy, mid-length dress is comfortable enough for sightseeing and wine tasting throughout the day when paired with flat sandals.

At night, you can elevate this look with some high heels or a pair of wedges for a nice dinner.

With pleasant weather nearly year-round, Napa is quite easy to pack for.

Depending on when you’re traveling, weather conditions range from bright sunny skies to chilly winter days. 

Regardless of the daily temperatures, Napa is a wonderful place to travel to, even in the coldest months. 

Napa temperatures  to prepare and pack for are as follows:

When should you visit Napa?

The best times to visit Napa depend on the following considerations.

If you prefer fewer crowds, cheaper accommodations, and cost-effective experiences, the wintery off-season is the perfect time for you to visit. 

In other words, if you choose to visit in November-February, you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

You’ll just need to remember to prepare for some chillier days with long sleeves and a medium-weight winter coat , however.

The busiest time of year takes place during the harvest season from August-October which is also when temperatures are at their warmest.

If you visit at this time, the weather is fabulous and you’ll see women in sundresses and sunhats, and men in lightweight collared shirts and khakis.

You will, however, have to deal with crowds and surging prices on just about everything. 

From March-May, you’ll find a happy balance between good weather and moderate price points. 

Slacks, layers, and lightweight jackets are essential as there is definitely a chill in the air during these months.

What to Wear in Napa For Women

Following the “wine country casual” dress code is appropriate for most activities you’ll find in Napa.

Whether it be a tasting experience, a picture-perfect hot air balloon ride, or a train ride through wine country. 

With this being said, don’t be afraid to follow your own style!

Whether you’re a lover of all things fancy or a casual-smart dresser , you can swap up these tips to fit what makes you feel most comfortable. 

These are the main categories you should consider when packing clothes for women:

Casual Wear

While activewear is far too casual for several Napa events, you’ll want a couple of casual options for planned outdoor activities. 

Consider what would be comfortable to wear on a hike, for a day at the lake, on a bike tour around town, or for casual meals. 

Some casual items to wear in Napa for women include:

• Light jacket (windbreaker or zip-up)

When touring wine country, I recommend you keep things smart but casual with pretty midi dresses or dark wash jeans with a nice top and blazer.

For shoes, make sure you choose a comfortable option that you feel good about traipsing through the vineyard in; dressy flats, flat sandals, or a pair of wedges are all good options. 

Finish off your look with a lightweight cover-up like a shawl or cardigan and a sun hat to protect you from the elements!

Formal Wear

Don’t worry, there’s no dress code – but we have some tips to help make your wine tasting tour more comfortable.

Napa Wine Tasting Clothing Tips

#1: dress in layers.

That’s the first thing we tell guests when they ask us what to wear wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma. Weather in the San Francisco Bay Area can change within minutes, and there can be quite a contrast between mornings in The City and afternoons in Wine Country.  

As Mark Twain has been quoted as saying, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

The San Francisco fog is infamous. Sometimes, it’s almost like a miracle when you head north from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and find sunshine and warmth on  tours to Napa and Sonoma .

So start the day with a jacket or sweater even in the middle of summer. You can leave that layer in our secure  vehicle  as temperatures rise and wine warms the body. We promise your guide will keep your belongings safe while you’re enjoying a day in Wine Country.

#2: Dress Comfortably

Our second suggestion is to dress comfortably. Napa and Sonoma definitely exemplify California’s laid-back lifestyle, especially when it comes to attire. Basically, there’s no dress code. However, we urge you to wear comfortable shoes since some walking is necessary especially during lunch and free time.

#3: Wear Something Fun

Recommendation No. 3 is to wear something fun. Wine Country is fun so you’ll want to look good in the pictures you take during the best day of your vacation.

#4: Remember to Smile

Dress up or down. Wine Country welcomes everyone no matter the attire. Just remember to wear a smile for all the amazing photos you’re going to take.

#5: Shorts, Jeans and T-Shirts are Ok

Shorts are definitely okay for men and women. Jeans and T-shirts are also cool. What you wear wine tasting really is up to you!

#6: Wear Sunglasses

We strongly suggest wearing sunglasses. There’s a good chance one or two tastings will be held outdoors weather permitting. You’ll also have free time for lunch and to walk around a Wine Country town, so sunglasses will come in handy.

#7: Wear Comfortable Shoes

Please wear comfortable shoes. We’d hate for you to miss out on an extra pour in a vineyard while the wine server is telling the group about what makes their wine the best.

#8: Hats Come in Handy

Hats are certainly optional, but may come in handy during vineyard strolls or free time or lunch. Bonus points for couples with matching hats.

Women can never go wrong with a sundress or light blouse paired with some stylish jeans or pants—all depending on the weather and type of occasion. 

I recommend checking the winery’s dress code before visiting a winery. One of my favorite things to do is look the winery up on Instagram and see what people are wearing when they tag the winery in their photos. This can be so helpful!

Once you’ve got the outfit down, throw on some wedges or sandals if it’s hot outside, and if it’s chilly, opt for a cardigan or jean jacket over your ensemble. 

Make sure whatever you choose is something you’re comfortable wearing for hours at a time so that you can really enjoy yourself without worrying about an uncomfortable outfit all day long!

Winter Wine Tasting Outfit Ideas 

Winter wine tasting is all about finding the right pairing of varietals and your style. 

Winter offers a wide array of choices for clothing; from cozy sweaters to long dresses, the possibilities are endless. Invest in dark colors such as navy, black, and gray for a polished look or opt for bright colors to make your outfit stand out. 

Layer it up with a leather jacket and some tall boots to beat the chill without sacrificing on style. Accessorize the outfit with seasonal pieces such as wool scarves, funky hats, statement rings and necklaces – whatever you choose is sure to complement the flavors of your favorite Winter wines!

Summer Wine Tasting Outfit

Summer is a great time to enjoy a nice glass of wine and partake in some outdoor wine tastings! Whether you’re heading to a picnic at a winery or are sipping away with friends on the luxurious Napa patios, choosing the right outfit to match the afternoon can be tricky. 

Summer wine-tasting outfit ideas should include a breathable fabric, like lightweight cotton or loose linen. 

Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes – you’ll want to be able to stroll through the vineyards during the tasting! 

For bottoms, a breezy skirt will provide relief from the hot summer sun. I’d generally recommend avoiding shorts, unless they’re trend pieces, as wineries tend to be too formal for jean shorts. 

As for tops, something that’s lightweight and can easily transition from day to night is your best bet (e.g., rompers and dressy/boho blouses). 

During this time of year, I love a good maxi dress, and it’s always in style to wear white!

The fall season is the perfect time for a wine tasting, and no one wants to come unprepared! When putting together your fall wine-tasting outfit, think casual yet polished.

Spring wine tasting calls for an outfit that’s both stylish and practical—you need to be comfortable enough to enjoy your surroundings while still looking pulled together. During spring time in wine country, there can be huge shifts between daytime and nighttime temperatures, so layers are a MUST!

Strike the perfect balance by opting for light layers that will keep you warm when the temperature takes a dive, picking colors that are sure to pop against the greenery, and adding chic accessories for a cheery finishing touch. Personally, I love pairing a denim jacket with a midi dress!

This is where you can express yourself and have fun! Scarves are always a great accessory to add a bit of color and texture to your outfit without going overboard. 

Sunglasses are also an essential item when out wine tasting—not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they also provide an extra layer of privacy for those who want to get away from it all (and maybe enjoy an extra glass of vino).

Lastly, don’t forget to bring along a fashionable bag that can hold all of your essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, water bottle etc., while also adding another layer of style to your look!

Wine Tasting Outfits For Him

Guys should start with a dress shirt or polo that is comfortable but still looks somewhat put together. 

Wine tasting in Napa Valley tends to be more formal, so guys should wear nice pants. If you’re wine-tasting somewhere more casual, such as Oregon or Idaho , nice jeans or even shorts could work well. Research the winery ahead of time and look at who’s tagged them in their Instagrams for an idea of what people tend to wear here. 

Wineries that are more outdoorsy and laid back, especially if you’re going for a picnic will be okay with shorts. 

Wineries with formal tasting rooms and higher price tags generally command more formal attire as well. 

If the weather is cool, grab a light jacket or sweater to keep warm during the outdoor tastings. 

Lastly, don’t forget your shoes! A nice pair of leather loafers or boat shoes will do the trick and look great with any outfit.

Wine Tasting Attire: What to Wear in Wine Country

Heels or flats? Dress shirt or t-shirt? Sun dress or jeans? White pants or… oh, you’re brave. If you’re going wine tasting, you might be a little unsure about what to do when it comes to dressing the part in Wine Country—especially when terms like “Wine Country Casual” and “Napa Valley Chic” come into play.

While there are seldom strict dress codes in Wine Country, we realize the topic of ‘wine tasting attire’ can be a bit confusing, so we’re sharing our best tips to ensure you look and feel good for your trip!

TIP 1: WEAR LAYERS

We put this tip first because it’s super important to bring layers for a day of wine tasting, even if the weather is supposed to be in the high 80s. Why? Because daily temperatures can fluctuate significantly in Wine Country, depending on how close to the coast you are or how high in the mountains. But also because some tastings and tours take place in cooler spaces like barrel rooms and caves, which are notoriously cold (around 55 degrees) to ensure the quality of the wine. When you are outdoors—particularly in the warmer months—it’s also smart to have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen on hand, and even a breathable, light sweater to keep you safe from the sun, since you can’t always count on shade from umbrellas.

TIP 2: CHOOSE WISELY BETWEEN HEELS OR FLATS

Some vineyards have parking lots, manicured walkways, and seated indoor tastings, in which case heels (or better yet, wedges) would work just fine. For the most part though, you can’t count on flat, level surfaces when wine tasting, as some wineries conduct tastings in grassy picnic areas, while standing at bar counters, or in basement level cellars (hello, stairs). Wearing comfortable shoes that can handle soft grass, wine stains, and uneven surfaces are key when wine tasting, as are closed toed shoes for those wineries that let you venture into the vineyards. If you’re on the fence, just slip a pair of flats into your purse as a back-up. There’s nothing worse than sore feet when you’re trying to enjoy yourself, so alternative options are always a good idea.

TIP 3: LADIES, FIND A MIDDLE GROUND

For the ladies out there who are worried about being over or underdressed, strike a balance! A blouse and blue jeans with wedges can look modern and effortless. A dress with a jean jacket and cowboy boots can look country chic. Use your style to express yourself, knowing that you’ll likely be indoors and out and in a variety of settings during a day of wine tasting. If you’re still a little unsure, try bringing a different pair or shoes, a scarf, or fancier earrings along with you. That way, you can dress up or down depending on how you feel once you reach your destination. Of course, if you plan to follow your wine tasting experience by going straight to a fancy Michelin-starred restaurant, you’ll want to wear something that can be dressed up.

TIP 4: WHAT ABOUT THE GUYS?

Golf attire and button down shirts are always safe options for men. Stylish, dark wash jeans are acceptable too, but making a little more effort will ensure that you’ll fit in wherever you go. As mentioned in Tip 2, closed toed shoes are always a better choice versus flip flops, but if all the wineries you plan to go to are super casual, kid- and dog-friendly places, then casual shoes are a fine choice. Just be sure to nix the cologne (we’ll elaborate on the latter).

TIP 5: LET THE WINE BE THE ONLY THING YOU SMELL

Smell, taste, sight. All of these senses go into a well-rounded wine tasting experience. This means you should factor in what you put on your body. Perfumes, colognes, and scented body lotion can interfere with the subtleties that make wine so divine. There’s nothing worse than trying to take in a wine’s delicate aromas only for it to be masked by the smell of a fellow taster’s strong cologne.

TIP 6: THINK TWICE ABOUT THE LIPSTICK

Ask anyone in the wine hospitality industry and they’ll probably say that cleaning lipstick off wine glasses is a thorn in their side. Even industrial cleaners have a hard time removing lipstick from glasses. If lipstick is part of your signature look, maybe go easy on it while wine tasting, or find a tinted chapstick that won’t leave as much of a mark.

TIP 7: CHOOSE YOUR COLORS WISELY

Unless you’re only sipping white wine all day, spills are something you need to factor in. Wearing darker colors can help camouflage any mishaps. Even if you’re extra careful, the person next to you may overindulge and spill a glass, or the wine bottle may drip after the server pours a taste into your glass. These things happen, so plan accordingly… but if you really want to rock white or lighter colors, go for it! Just a 90 minute drive after crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Napa is a scenic destination known for its beauty, sunshine, and of course, wine!

Napa’s wineries enchant over 4.5 million visitors each year, and it’s no surprise. The romantic vines, temperate weather, and enjoyable tasting experiences are a magnet for honeymooners, girls’ weekends, and vacationers young and old.

There are a variety of ways to visit the vineyards: you could opt for the flexibility of renting a car or you could sign up for a guided tour by bus. You may prefer to try out the infamous wine train, or even rent a room somewhere in the valley and hire a driver to escort you to vineyards.

Regardless of the method, you’ll be enjoying some fine wine, friendly Californians, and a lovely climate.

The weather in Napa Valley is quite mild, making it both an ideal location for growing grapes and an ideal place to visit. Temperatures in the spring and fall hover in the 60s and 70s.

Summer can see temps in the low to mid 80s, and during winter it doesn’t get colder than 40°F. This weather leads to fertile soil, which results in the many different varietals of wine that California is known for.

• Cash: Some wineries are cash-only and ATMs can be hard to find (or impossible to get to if you’re on a structured tasting tour). Tastings can run from $10 to upwards of $50, so be prepared!
• ID: Really? Yes, really. My friend left her driver’s license in the hotel room in San Francisco, and let’s just say that she didn’t have a great time staring at the wine. Make sure you have your ID with you at all times!
• Reservations: Many vineyards welcome walk-ins, but some require reservations days, weeks, or even months in advance. Do your research and call ahead.
• Snacks: Some vineyards don’t offer food, some have cheese and meat for purchase, and others have entire restaurants on the premises. If you’re not sure about your plans for the day, pack some nuts or a granola bar to munch on.

I grew up here. I’ve picked up friends in San Francisco where it was 56 crossing the bridge only to get to the valley where it was 106! Layers is key! There is lots of great food available with some foodie meccas like Bouchon Bakery and Taylor’s Burgers! If you are going to taste, PLEASE have a designated driver. I and my family and friends live and work and have to drive on the one lane roads with you.

This is great! I live in the Sonoma Valley, and I just want to say, I would not wear white! Not if you are tasting red wine, anyway. I have had many “accidents” myself, but it never fails that I see people in white with red wine stains whenever I am wine tasting.

There’s nothing quite like the hills of Tuscany, the Napa valley, or the lakeside of the Okanagan, along with other beautiful places referred to as “wine country” . If you are planning a trip to any of these destinations (or others), you are in for a big treat.

When visiting wineries you might want to tour the vineyards and learn about wine making, enjoy a wine tasting, or a delicious meal on the terrace. Whatever your plans, you’ll definitely want to make sure you are wearing the right winery outfit.

Things To Consider

When you are deciding on winery outfits, you’ll will want to consider a few important factors;

• the season/weather – will it be hot, warm, cool, or rainy?
• the type of winery – is it casual or more upscale?
• the occasion – are you just visiting, or are you attending an event like a winery wedding?

For instance, if you are going to a winery in the summer you’ll want to wear lightweight breathable clothing that is stylish and flattering. If visiting a small boutique winery, you can wear a more casual outfit. On the other hand, if you are going to a high-end, upscale winery you’ll want to dress up for the occasion.

This winery outfit is chic, minimal, and has a refined feel. It’s perfect for wandering through the vineyards (flat shoes are the best choice if you’ll be “off-roading”), and sitting down for a post-wine-tour lunch.

Bring along a basket bag for your essentials, and extra room to pack a couple bottles of wine home with you!

A pretty midi dress is the perfect balance between casual and dressy. Therefore, it can be the perfect wine tasting outfit and be comfortable enough for a tour around the vineyard.

Style a midi dress with a pair of comfortable flat sandals for a casual winery trip. Or, dress it up with heeled sandals and a designer crossbody bag (hands free!) for a top-rated winery visit.

Go for classic black, or opt for a floral midi dress if you prefer a splash of color.

One of our favorite winery outfits is a pretty maxi dress. If you are headed to a luxury winery or a wedding at a winery in the summer, a maxi dress is the perfect go-to. It is light and airy enough for hot weather, but is formal and chic for a fancy occasion.

Go with a nice pair of comfortable heeled sandals (or ankle boots in the fall) and dainty accessories to elevate the look. Remember, less is more. Let the maxi dress be the statement piece and keep everything else to a minimum.

When the weather is really warm and you plan to do everything from a wine tour, to tasting, to lunch, shorts and a blouse or tank top is a great combo. If you choose a pair of nice tailored shorts, such as paperbag shorts or linen shorts, you can dress up the outfit and still be appropriately dressed for an upscale winery.

Throw on a pair of comfortable heeled sandals, flat mules, or flat sandals, and bring along a brimmed woven hat for extra sun protection.

A midi skirt and a minimal tank top can look very classy and elevated for a casual day exploring wineries or a tasting at an upscale estate.

You can opt for a breezy linen skirt with a simple tank top for something lightweight and casual. On the other hand, you can go dressier with a silk midi slip skirt and camisole for a wine tasting followed by dinner.

• If you are going on a wine tour through the vineyards you will want to make sure you have flat or block-heeled footwear. A void high, pointy heels as they can get stuck in the ground as you walk.
• Wine tours tend to be quite long, and you’ll be standing most of the time, so prioritize comfort!

Additionally, we recommend you avoid sneakers and flip flops as they are both often too casual for a winery setting.

Is it okay to wear jeans to a winery?

It depends! You can easily wear jeans to a casual winery, especially a farm winery that grows crops alongside grapes. Many wineries are very laid-back and do not have a dress code. So it’s not unusual to see the owners wearing overalls or work-wear as they are in and out of the fields.

On the other hand, estate wineries, or those with an upscale or high-end atmosphere, may have a dress code that doesn’t allow jeans. Therefore, it’s best to check if there is a dress code ahead of time to be on the safe side.

If you are really set on wearing jeans to a fancier winery, go for a dark wash or black jeans without any rips , as they have a dressier look than light wash or distressed jeans.

What do people wear to a wine tasting?

A wine tasting experience is similar to attending a brunch, lunch, or dinner with a set menu. Therefore, you’ll want to dress nicer for the “occasion” so leave the leggings, sneakers, and athletic wear at home. A midi dress , sweater dress , tailored pants or nice jeans and a sweater , are all suitable options for wine tasting outfits.

Sometimes wine tastings are right in the wine cellars which can be cooler in temperature so bring along an extra layer just in case. 

What do you wear to a winery when it’s raining?

If you have a winery tour or tasting planned but the weather calls for rain, don’t fret! Here are some tips:

• Bring along an umbrella
• Wear a hands-free crossbody purse so you can hold your umbrella and wine glass (at the same time!)
• Opt for a waterproof trench coat that will look stylish over a dress or trousers
• Wear rain boots or waterproof ankle boots to keep your feet warm and dry

What Not To Wear To A Winery

Now that we’ve given you a full range of outfit ideas and what to wear, let’s quickly cover what not to wear to a winery, whether its a small laid-back farm winery or a fancy estate winery.

• Flip flops. Not only are flip flops overly casual, they are also not very sturdy and don’t make the best walking shoe if you are heading on a wine tour.
• Sneakers.  In general sneakers are a bit too casual for a winery. Although some people will still wear them, we suggest leaving them at home and going with a dressier shoe option.
• Pumps with pointy heels. As mentioned earlier, pumps with pointed heels can easily get stuck in the grass or ground when walking around the vineyard. Choose shoes with a block heel or wedge heel instead.
• Athletic wear. This includes leggings, joggers, sweatpants, hoodies, and other items you’d wear to work out or lounge in. They are too casual and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb at the winery wearing this style of clothing.
• Optional: A handheld bag/purse.  When it comes to a bag or purse you’ll want something with a long strap to wear over your shoulder or as a crossbody. In short, you’ll be holding a wine glass for much of the time, going with something hands-free is ideal!

Wine tasting always makes for a good time! When delicious wine, breathtaking views, fun people and perfect weather surround you, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. That is why I put together this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery. This style guide will not only answer what to wear wine tasting but also go over many style tips, outfit ideas, what to wear during different seasons and it’s full of outfit photos!

To start, let’s review some general winery outfit style tips. These are tips that apply to all of your wine tasting outfits no matter location or season! Keep these ten style tips handy when you’re packing for your wine region adventure.

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to sign up for a wine tour or have a long list of wineries you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes. But comfortable doesn’t have to be sneakers. Instead of sneakers, wear flat sandals, wedges, loafers, or even some nice slides. Also take into consideration which wineries you will be visiting which means you might be walking in grass, dirt, gravel or cobblestone.

2. Go Hands-Free and Small with Your Purse: When you’re wine tasting, you will be walking around a lot, holding and reading brochures, tasting cheeses or chocolates, and of course, holding various wine glasses. So it’s best to wear a fuss-free bag. Also, if you carry a purse without a strap, you run the risk of leaving it behind or setting it down without keeping an eye on it. The best purse to wear to a winery is a small crossbody bag, like the super stylish Mini Marcie from Chloe , the classic Soho Disco bag from Gucci , or mini monogram crossbody from Saint Laurent.

3. Layer a Blazer or Cute Denim Jacket: If your winery outfit is looking a little simple, add a stylish layer. Depending on the season you could wear a denim jacket in the summer, a floral blazer in the spring, a long cardigan in the fall and a coat in the winter. Make sure this layer is not too bulky as you want to move freely no matter the season.

4. Go More Dressy Than Casual: Leave your leggings at home! Even though wineries are basically farms in the country, don’t think you can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and call it a day (unless of course you want to, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you did). Opt for a little more dressy than casual. I still think that wine tasting is a pretty posh activity, so I try always to dress nice and classy. 5. Low Maintenance Hair: Your wine tasting attire includes your hair so wear your hair up or style it in a way that doesn’t need maintenance throughout your wine tasting activities. If you’re planning on being out all day on the wine trail, I would suggest putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun. This way you won’t have to worry about it getting frizzy, going flat, and you won’t have to mess with it during your wine tasting tour. If I have some extra time in the morning, I’ll blowdry it, so it looks nice down.

6. Wear Chapstick: The main activity while wine tasting is drinking wine so instead of lipstick wear chapstick. You don’t want always to be checking your lipstick or re-applying when you get to the car. Keep it simple and wear chapstick.

7. Skip the Strong Perfume: You will be smelling a lot of wine trying to decipher what notes are most prominent, and you don’t want other smells interfering so skip the perfume! Not wearing perfume is also courtesy the group you’re wine tasting with and other guests in the wine tasting room or cave.

8. Wear a Pretty Print: If you need to bring some interest to your wine tasting outfit, swap a solid for a print. Instead of a solid blue dress, wear a dress with horizontal stripes like in my outfit example below. Wear a floral shirt in the spring, stripes in the summer, plaids & tartans in the fall and houndstooth in the winter.

9. Easy is Better: Don’t wear an outfit that is too high maintenance. What you wear to a winery needs to be comfortable and stylish, but remember point four, nothing too casual either.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White: There’s nothing wrong with wearing white to a winery. I have worn white jeans wine tasting, just see my outfit examples below. If you know you spill a lot, then I would suggest skipping the white.

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Different Seasons

When going on a vacation to Napa Valley, there are many choices to make. You need to consider where you’ll stay, which wineries you’ll visit, the time of year you’ll go, and what you’ll pack.

Packing the appropriate wine tasting attire is not necessarily tricky; you need to consider the locations you’ll be visiting and the time of year you’ll be going.

My favorite seasons to visit wine country is spring and fall because it’s not too hot or too cold. You don’t have to worry about sweating or getting sunburned. If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, I would suggest one of these to seasons. But let’s go over what you need to consider for each season and what to wear wine tasting in the spring, fall, summer, and winter.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring

The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.

Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70’s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.

In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you don’t plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. It’s also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and it’s too breezy.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer

Summer in Napa Valley is pretty warm and sunny but this is what draws so many people from around California and beyond because it’s so beautiful! The temperature in the summer ranges from 80s–90s during the day and can cool down to the mid-50s at night.

In the summer opt for light colors, pretty prints, in light fabrics. Instead of jeans, wear skirts, shorts, and dresses.

If you do want to wear pants wear chinos instead of jeans. Chinos are very comfortable because it’s not very thick and not too tight. These two things would make this wine tasting trip very uncomfortable.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Fall

September is my favorite time of the year to go wine tasting because the mornings and evenings are crisp, but not too cold, and the temperatures during the day range from the 80s–90s. It’s the end of summer but not entirely fall. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on a winery patio or deck and take in the gorgeous views.

But fall is also one of the busiest times to visit Napa Valley because it’s harvest time. Harvest in the wine regions means the grapes are getting picked from the vines and many wine enthusiasts travel from all around to enjoy harvest events and special activities. Make sure to plan accordingly.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter

The most significant difference before spring or fall and winter, in addition to the temperature, is the crowds. If you’ve visited Napa Valley in the busy months, you know what I’m referring to regarding the masses. The tasting room at wineries is ten people deep, and you have to make your way to the counter. In the winter Napa has an entirely different feel, it’s peaceful, quiet and you have some places all to yourself.

In terms of weather, it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. Temperatures go down into the high 30’s in the evenings and during the day are in the mid to upper 50’s. I would pack plenty of layers because it can get warm in wineries.

If you’re planning on going wine tasting in the winter here are a few things to consider.

Just like any other time of year, wear comfortable footwear. You’ll be walking and on your feet, a lot so wear flat shoes or shoes with a thick stacked heel. This type of shoe is best for days filled with wine tasting and tours.

Make sure to bring a comfortable and warm sweater. If you decide to wear a thinner sweater, then layer on a coat. But if you don’t want to lug around a large jacket wear a very warm sweater instead. In the outfit example below I wore a thick olive green turtleneck sweater. I love the oversized collar and distinct fabric patterns; it brings texture and dimensions to an otherwise simple outfit.

With the large sweater and high black boots, I wore light colored skinny jeans. Remember; the balance is critical. The boots are thick and heavy so to balance the boots I wore jeans on the lighter side instead of charcoal or black. I also wanted the shoes to stand out, and if I had worn black jeans, you wouldn’t have even noticed the boots.

It’s best to wear thinner skinny jeans with high boots such as the ones I’m wearing because you want the boots to fit snugly around your calves. The last thing you want is your jeans bunching up around your ankles.

You might have noticed a theme in the notes I mentioned. Comfort is key. You can be stylish and comfortable; you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other.

There are a variety of stylish wine tasting outfits you can wear to wine destinations such as Napa. The variation exists because of activities, weather, and destination. The two critical details that you need to make sure these outfits are stylish and comfortable.

If you’ve been wine tasting, you know that there is a lot of standing, walking, and more standing involved. You need to wear an outfit that is comfortable with these various activities.

When putting together an outfit find a middle ground. An outfit that is not too dressy but not too casual either. You’ll need to wear a wine tasting outfit that you can wear all day and smoothly transition into evening dinner if you don’t plan on going back to your hotel to change.

Neutral Wine Tasting Outfit

The first wine tasting outfit is a blend of neutrals and one gorgeous printed top. The halter top is the main piece in this look, and the olive green cargos and wedges are the shirts supporting items. The cargo pants downplay the fancy, and the wedges keep the pants looking classy. With the natural color palette, this outfit is in its perfect setting.

The blouse has a pretty nature pattern which added the right amount of interest without it being an overpowering single piece. This outfit has a delicate balance of stylish but casual which I was able to achieve with the color and fabric choices.

A neutral outfit to wear wine tasting goes perfectly with this wine country activity since it’s such a relaxing atmosphere and the landscape of most wineries are earth-toned. This outfit will also work with flats or sandals if wedges are not your favorite thing to wear wine tasting.

If you’re wondering what to wear wine tasting remember: month, location and landscape. Put together a stylish and comfortable look and bring an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Shop nEUTRAL COLOR LOOK

Stylish wine tasting outfit.

For a stylish approach consider a striped shirtdress. In this outfit, I went with a look that was more “dressy” but still had the feel of a casual weekend look. The relaxed fit of the dress and the strips make this dress wine tasting appropriate. I know wearing heels while wine tasting is taboo, but I couldn’t help but wear those gorgeous laser cut heels. The two paired perfectly together.

I know what some of you might be thinking, “you’ll spill red wine on the white,” but take it from someone that spills a lot, you can wear white wine tasting as I mentioned in the ten style tips at the start of this post.

This shirtdress is both stylish and comfortable. All you need is a few accessories and a cute pair of shoes.

Monochrome Wine Tasting Outfit

When a lot of walking is involved consider a cute pair of sandals. Remember I said cute pair of sandals, not flip flops. Keep it stylish even though you’re toning it down. With these casual wine tasting outfits make sure you have a focus point and something that still keeps the outfit classy.

In this third outfit, the sandals were the contrasting pop of color to the blue monochrome outfit . When wearing pants and a blouse of very similar color make sure the pieces are made from different fabrics. This top is a different material and hue of blue from the pants. The shiny silk looks excellent against the muted blue chinos. The blue structured patent handbag gives this casual wine tasting outfit structure, and again it’s a different material and color from the other two blues in this outfit.

Remember when you want to wear the same colors in one outfit, select different materials with a slight change in color, that can also mean shiny. In this outfit, the pants are muted, the silk top has a sheen to it, and the handbag is shiny.

Cute Wine Tasting Attire

The last outfit is something that would work for wine tasting locations where walking on dirt would be minimal. Overall it’s a cute and casual look, and the patterned pants added some individuality, and the heels dressed it up a bit.

Since the pants are very busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit neutral. I paired these patterned pants with a blouse that matches one of the colors from the pattern.

With this chiffon blouse and a basic tee in the same color, I layered the light chiffon blouse over the shirt and created an airy, pretty layered look. The pop of color in this look was the handbag and the orange heels. These colors work well together because they’re all in the warm color family. The browns and oranges with a splash of red are appealing to the eye and come together nicely.

Planning Your Trip to Napa Valley

Wine tasting in Napa is a unique experience in my list of favorite places to visit. Napa brings together so many beautiful things that I love, from good food and wine to gorgeous landscapes and a relaxing environment to disconnect from the day-to-day.

With more than 400 wineries (600+ if you count Sonoma) you are sure to find a wine that you’ll love while wine tasting in Napa. If you are limited in time, at most you’d be able to visit 15 wineries during a weekend, well maybe you could do more, but I wouldn’t advise it because you’ll get too tired or too drunk.

My advice is to do some research ahead of time and make a list of the wineries you want to visit. There are popular locations like Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Castello di Amorosa. But there are smaller gems where you can maybe find the best Merlot you’ve ever had. The style of trip you wish to experience should help determine the tasting rooms you visit. If you want an intimate visit where you get to talk to the winemakers and learn insights into what makes their wine special than I would look for smaller tasting rooms.

If you’re looking to see castles, take a ride at Sterlings ariel tram and see where the most famous wines from Napa come from then I would organize a route for the larger vineyards.

Peter and I have visited the famous wineries and the smaller ones during our wine tasting trips in Napa. This September we made an effort to visit smaller vineyards with cozier atmospheres, but we deviate by visiting Beringer Vineyards to have a tasting of there reserve wine and of course a cheese plate.

We tend to plan, but if you’re wine tasting without any specific plan that works too. You can start driving and stop at the first place that looks appealing.

Travel guide: what to wear and where to taste wine in napa and sonoma.

California’s wine country is a magical place to visit. If you are planning a trip to Napa or Sonoma, you are in for a big treat. But you’ll want to be well researched and have a good strategy to make the most of your trip like what to wear to wine taste and where are some of the best and less touristy wineries to visit.

In the last 17 years, my husband and I have been fortunate to visit 11 times, most recently this month for a client event.

In all those years, there have never been two trips alike, which means it is a place that is impossible to get bored of.

Over the course of our visits, I've learned what to wear (and not wear) and discovered some of the best wineries to spend a few hours relaxing, sipping wine, eating amazing food and taking in the chill atmosphere of northern California's wine country. 

When to Visit Napa and Sonoma

For this Clevelander, wine country is gorgeous at nearly any time of the year. But my favorite time is the Fall because the temps are cooling and the leaves on the vines and trees start to turn. It also happens to be the busiest time of the year because wineries are harvesting grapes for the upcoming vintage.

Because it high time, it takes a bit more research, planning and perhaps budget to visit at this time. Lodging prices are typically higher and restaurant reservations can be harder to come by if let to the last minute. Likewise, securing a driver or certain reservations at wineries can also get a little trickier.

If Fall doesn’t fit your schedule or budget, almost any time of the year is worth the trip. You’ll just need to plan for the weather, be it hot in the summer or rain in the winter and spring months.

What to Pack and Wear in Napa and Sonoma

California wine country is not only famous for its grapes but also for its big temperature swings – sometimes as much as 45 degrees in one day. Layers are key to being prepared for all kinds of weather and atmospheres.

In the summer and fall that means dresses with cardi’s, skirts with jackets, pants with tanks and light weight jackets. In the spring and winter you will want to add heavier layers, a trench or rain coat and perhaps an umbrella for any rain.

Another few things to keep in mind for what to wear in Napa and Sonoma:

Choose wisely on footwear

Napa and Sonoma are very much the country. On tours and at certain wineries, you will be walking on dirt paths among the vines. Flats or booties are best for traversing this type of topography. Save the heels for dinners where the path is a bit more level and consistent.

Don’t go in costume

It’s easy to get swept up in the idea of wine country with some accessories like hats and boots or to go overboard with getting super dressed up.   But it is still normal life. You will feel like an urban cowboy or a Kardashian out of place if you take outfits too far. 

At the same time, it is not the beach so punchy accessories really help make an outfit pop. Scarves, statement earrings and necklaces, cool shoes and sunglasses will help make you feel appropriate and well styled.

Layers layers layers

You will be taking clothes off and putting them back on all day between the vineyards, tasting rooms, barrel rooms and caves. Work all outfits around a couple of layers that you can mix and match between outfits.

Watch it on the white

White pants look crisp and cool until you pour a glass of red wine on them. If you are planning white, just make sure you don’t have a few outfits rotating around a white blouse or white pants. And be sure to carry Wine Out  in a travel size wherever you go.

Pack for the activity

If you are staying in downtown Yountville, St. Helena, Sonoma or Healdsburg, you will want to be walking around in the morning taking in the crisp air, city center square charm and local coffee shops. I’m not sure about you, but I would rather stroll in elevated athletic wear than be dressed for the day at that time of day. A pair of leggings, jacket, running shoes and sunglasses will have you feeling appropriate for the weather and the activity.

Wineries to Visit

There is no shortage of wineries worth a visit in the Napa and Sonoma Valley. Before Covid, you would be able to drop in and taste for a nominal fee. Now, you will need to make reservations and be willing to part with a bit more time and tasting fees.

This might put the pressure on to create a winery itinerary you will love. Here are a few from Napa and Sonoma that have impressive tastings and memorable tours:

Tasting is Napa is pretty straightforward. You will either follow Highway 29 or Silverado Trail to get to most wineries. Some great spots are perched up on Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Diamond Mountain. It takes some windy and twisty roads to get to those spots, but it is well worth it.

Artesa – This winery weaves art, architecture, and the unparalleled views of Napa into the entire experience of enjoying their incredible wines. While the tasting and view alone is reason to visit, the tour is worth the time and investment. The Tempreanillo is hands down my fave here. 

Stag’s Leap – Steeped in history and fueled by intense but approachable wines, Stag’s Leap is a Napa must do if you are a first time visitor.

Ma(i)sonry, RH Yountville Wine Vault – This space has changed through the years but the wine remains consistent. Now as Restoration Hardware has taken it over the backdrop to the stunning wines makes it a feast for the eyes and tastebuds. Plus, if you are staying in Yountville, it is walkable to all the hotels on Washington. 

Paraduxx – A tasting at Paraduxx is always a solid tasting. Though there are several levels of tasting to pick from, we have always thought the Paraduxx tasting to be a relaxing and delicious experience.

Round Pond Estate – Named one of the most beautiful wineries in Napa, Round Pond is as stunning to take in as is the wines and olive oil to taste.

Heitz – This family owned and Napa Valley OG is a must visit for Cabernet Sauvignon lovers. The Martha's Vineyard Cab is my last meal wine. 

Pride Mountain – It takes some work getting there so be sure you have a DD or that it is your first stop of the day. Every single wine is as incredible as are the views, but the Merlot is a real stunner. 

Frank Family Vineyards – Talk about a fun experience! A visit to Frank Family is the definition of cool and relaxed atmosphere. The wines will consistently knock your socks off and the super friendly staff will make it hard to leave.  

Robert Craig – If you are lucky enough to have Elton lead a tasting, you have won the day. The wines are incredible and the people as authentic as they come. You can choose from tasting in Downtown Napa or the Howell Mountain Experience for a more immersive visit with barrel tastings and more hands on background of the process. We were lucky enough to do the Howell Mountain Experience and were overwhelmed by the vistas, tour and wine.

Cimarossa – Take a gator ride through the property and among vines to a little house for tasting and pairing of cheeses, nuts and meats. The Nebbiolo blew us away almost as much as the views.

Schramsberg – A delightful way to check out some bubbly and learn about how sparkling wine is made. While the tasting will do the job, the tour is really what makes this stop one of the best in which to discover what it takes to make those little bubbles possible.

Tasting in Sonoma is a little trickier because the wineries are not on a straight shoot like Napa. It takes a bit more planning and strategizing to find your way from winery to winery. Plus, Sonoma is BIG so the time it takes to get from one winery to another is longer than in Napa typically.

Sonoma feels a little more homey and cozy too. The wineries are still gorgeous but they don’t have the same ritz as the Napa ones. Personally I like the feel of Sonoma over Napa.

Dutcher Crossing – Picturesque views, delicious wines and friendly people. Dutcher is the definition of Sonoma charm. The Bacigalupi Vineyard Zin is a party in a glass and one of my faves in the Valley. 

Flowers – Talk about an impressive tasting experience. From the welcome glass of wine to the cabana we perched in for the tasting, and every bite of the food that accompanied the wine blew us away. A new favorite and will always be on our circuit year after year.

Rued – Family owned and hand crafted wines means a low key and very Sonoma kind of feel. Plus the tastings are a bit less expensive but still a solid choice.

Repris – Set high above the valley floor and perched on Moon Mountain sits Repris. Their wines are stunning and bold. The views and the cave are jaw dropping. And the people that take you through your tasting journey are as approachable and humble as you can find. The Left Bank and Right Bank are fan favorites but the Zin is my favorite here.

Aperature - A stunning backdrop and building in which to spend a few hours relaxing and sipping on cool-climate Bordeaux.

I LOVE wine tasting in Napa in the winter, and the winter wine tasting outfits are always so cute. The weather in the winter in California wine country can be anywhere from 30’s/40’s in the brisk of mornings and at night to 50’s/lower 60’s during the day. So layers and a variety of outfits are key so you can adjust depending on the day! Break out your best boots and put together your Napa packing list ! Here is what I would wear in Napa this year.

What to Wear in Napa

The styles in California tend to air on the side of casual and laid-back. Since most of the region has a Mediterranean-like climate with days that are warm and humid, but nights that are cold and brisk, similar to any desert. You will want to pack plenty of short-sleeved tops, skirts, jean shorts, and sundresses for the warmer months, as well as a thick cardigan or fleece jacket for the evenings or winter.

Napa’s weather doesn’t deviate much from its typical range of warm and pleasant; Dressing in the winter will only be slightly bulkier than dressing for the Summer. Always peruse vineyards with sun-protective gear on, like a stylish wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and organic sunscreen. Pack neutral and easy-to-pair outfits that can be mixed and matched with other pieces.

What NOT to Bring to Napa Valley

While it may seem like an obvious thing to bring for your BYOB dinners, Napa is jam-packed with corkscrews and you’ll probably be forced by the TSA staff to throw away any sharp objects. Save yourself $10 and buy one once you arrive.

2. DON'T PACK too much stuff

You won’t want to be bogged down by heavy and overstuffed luggage during your trip to California. Bring easily paired items that look good with everything (think blues, neutrals, blacks). Maximize your luggage space by pulling a fashion crime and wearing the same outfit twice (gasp!) No one will notice in Napa.

3. DON'T PACK non-essential electronics

Wine country is the perfect place to unwind and unplug. Take this detour from your routine as an excuse to log-off of social media for a while and be present with your group. You can post the pictures when you’re back home!

4. DON'T PACK too many valuables

Winter is the best time to visit for fewer crowds and lower prices. It will be crisp and chilly, so don’t forget a thick jacket or two.

Spring is also a wonderful time to visit Napa for blooming flower fields, cooler weather, lower rates, and a more intimate experience.

Summer will be the busiest, hottest, and most expensive season (coinciding with the American holidays and school break). Book far in advance if you wish to visit from May to August, and still anticipate rates to skyrocket.

3-4 nights is the ideal time frame for a Napa holiday. A long weekend can be spent with:

There are many ways to get around Napa – Some visitors simplify their approach by staying along the main road – Highway 29. Walking will be the most economical option but not the safest if you are inebriated.

The VINE is a fixed-route bus system that runs down the length of Napa Valley (59-miles from Calistoga to El Cerrito Del Norte). You can purchase passes by phone, online, or in-person at local transit centers.

You can book an Uber or ride-share beforehand, but ensure you do this before you leave for the day. WiFi can be spotty in Napa and it will be harder to get a ride once you’re already at a winery.

When drinking, you do not want to make decisions or put your well-being at risk. Our recommendation would be to play it safe and ensure you have a reliable ride with a private ride or tour bus. Sit back and relax with a professional tour guide who chauffeurs you whereever you want to go for the next 6-8 hours.
