Tom Cruise may very well be the one man left in Hollywood who commands the top spot in the box office opening weekend. Unfortunately, Jack Reacher didn't reach that feat, nor did it probably deserve to. But it's far from a weak spot in Cruise' long history of brilliant action fun. Jack Reacher stars several Oscar caliber actors including Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, and Werner Herzog. All of which provide fine performances. But if we are being honest, Cruise is having by far the most fun here. Reacher is a slightly more brutal and definitely cockier version of his now classic, Ethan Hunt character from M:I. Now over 50-years old, I'm glad he still loves delivering those cheesy punch lines as much as he is doing insane stunts. The film itself definitely takes itself a little bit more serious, however, which is where it runs into a few problems. Although I think Christopher McQuarrie's directorial effort for M:I 5 was impeccable, he has trouble balancing the tone and pace of this particular film. At times, it claims itself to be a serious and even tragic espionage thriller. But the final 30 minutes completely forget about the grounded tone and let Cruise loose on one of his bone-crushing Mission Impossible action sprees. I just would have liked a bit more of a happy medium between the two. With that said, the brilliance of the film lies within all of its espionage and mysterious elements. Way before Cruise throws a single punch or shoots any bullets, I was sucked into the mystery the opening presents. The opening segment, along with two other extended sequences, are impressively done with absolutely no dialogue, yet you understand exactly what's going on. McQuarrie's directing talent really shines there. Much of the rest of the film's fun comes from some expectedly great supporting performances from Duvall and Herzog. Both have minimal screen time but they nonetheless steal every scene they are in. There's without question fun to be had with their roles and the film itself, but I can't help but think some more time in the writer's room could have helped polish the film a little. There weren't any particular moments in the film I disliked, but the cohesiveness just wasn't present. +Cruise at his best +Fun supporting performances +Eerie tone in the first half -Too action heavy towards the end -Tonal issues 7.6/10

The new Three Stooges reboot has more sniper rifles than I remember the original series having.

It features a handfull of slick action scenes and an initially engaging plot, but Jack Reacher is ultimately little more than a disposable Cruise-headed thriller that's outclassed by many of its genre brethren.

Cruise doing his usual role of bad-ass. Enjoyable.

Jack Reacher – review

T here is a rich and varied tradition of great directors taking cameos in other people's films. Fritz Lang appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's Le Mépris . François Truffaut appeared in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind . And now the legendary German director Werner Herzog appears in this movie, which stars Tom Cruise as hunky military investigator Jack Reacher, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and adapted by him from the bestseller One Shot by Lee Child.

Herzog just happens to be playing the sinister-looking, scary European guy with the heavy German accent. At first glance, this looks hurtfully close to typecasting. When he read through the script, we can only imagine Herzog's subsequent, tearful phone call to his agent: "I thawwwwd I would heff the rrrole of Reeeacher, the meff -erick aaaah-mee cop . I would be fenn -tastic in the pahhht because men would vant to bee me and women vant to bee wiss me and, plus, I could look into Rosamund Pike's eyes wissout heff -ing to stand on a box ."

But Herzog's role is sadly pretty small in this outrageous but entertaining pulp-melodrama thriller. It is watchable, though, of course, easily mocked: I discovered for myself recently that the joke about adding "-round" to the hero's surname is so prevalent online that it has almost caused Twitter to crash. Given its gun theme, the distributors might have pondered the possibility that this release should be postponed. It comes out this week in the US and on Boxing Day in the UK. But the film does show gun enthusiasts as, by and large, loathsome creeps, and that goes especially for people who drone on about their Second Amendment rights.

Tom Cruise is naturally Reacher, who in the book is a big guy . Cruise is not a big guy. So he remedies matters by bulking out east and west and walking with a shoulder-rolling, sub-Mitchum gait as if getting his arms past his pecs was a big problem. He does, however, appear to be at eye-level with Rosamund Pike. Cruise gets one fairly cheeky shirtless scene – which McQuarrie ironises with a throwaway gag – and his chest dimensions have evidently expanded mightily, while his tummy is sort of contracted into a muscular scrunch, as if you'd removed the plastic holding together a six-pack of beer and tied it in a knot. He wears leather bomber jackets and tan shoes, and in one scene a Persil-white top that is almost as low-cut as Pike's.

Reacher is a wild card, a highly decorated warrior once employed as a brilliant internal investigator, who has now quit the army and disappeared off the map, living a mysterious and somewhat ascetic life. We get to glimpse his file, which is regarded with the same awestruck respect and fear as that of Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

This Pimpernel of the US military re-emerges when a trained army sniper is arrested for the fatal shooting of five people, apparently at random. The investigating officer Emerson (David Oyelowo) is certain of his guilt, but to Emerson's astonishment and chagrin, a brilliant and beautiful lawyer, Helen (Pike), has stepped forward to defend this man, simply to spite her overbearing dad, the district attorney, played by Richard Jenkins. It is the defendant himself who mysteriously calls on Reacher's help – the only man who can prove his innocence.

The story pans out in a long, involved and more than faintly preposterous style, though with a few procedural diversions along the way. Reacher begins by telling Helen that he will help, if she agrees to interview the victims' families: an unthinkably tactless thing to do, but it elicits important details about the crime.

Perhaps the most purely enjoyable scene comes when Reacher (trained in badass unarmed combat) is challenged to a fistfight by five bullies outside a bar. It's five against one, smirks one. Three against one, corrects Reacher coolly, because the last two guys always turn and run. Then the action kicks off in a scene so elaborately edited and choreographed, it looks like an adaptation of Matthew Bourne's famous all-male Swan Lake.

Reacher must eventually confront the evil one himself, played by Herzog with a weird contact-lens to make one of his irises milky-white – as if he wasn't scary-looking enough as it is. In one horrible scene, he demands that a cringing underling bite off two of his own fingers. By the end of that, I and quite a few other members of the audience were attempting to bite our own fingers off, in the grip of an intense, unclassifiable emotion. Perhaps there will be more Reacher films after this: I hope Mr Cruise rises to the challenge.

In the film, A seemingly purposeless shooting rampage claimed the lives of five people in a typical town one morning. The investigation quickly zeroes in on a single possible suspect, a former military sniper, who is taken into custody without delay. The questioning of the individual results in one statement: Get Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise).

Reacher, a mysterious former Army investigator, is convinced that the authorities have the correct suspect, but he still agrees to work with the sniper’s defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). However, the more Reacher investigates the situation, the less black and white it seems to be.

2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Jack Reacher returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on the 2013 novel Never Go Back by Lee Child.

In the films, Jack Reacher, a former soldier and drifter, completes his mission to dismantle a human trafficking organization, he travels to Washington, DC, to meet with his liaison, Major Susan Turner, for dinner. But instead, he runs into her replacement, Colonel Sam Morgan, who tells him that Major Turner has been arrested on espionage charges.

Jack consults with Colonel Bob Moorcroft, her seasoned attorney, who reveals that Major Turner is also under suspicion for the deaths of two American servicemen in Afghanistan. In addition, he informs Jack that a woman has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he is the father of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Jack is thrown in jail after being falsely accused of murdering Moorcroft. He realizes that he and Turner are both in the crosshairs of two assassins and that they have been set up. But he comes to her aid, and they make their escape. It doesn’t take long before they figure out that army personnel and a powerful government contractor/arms dealer are involved in a plot.

Additionally, Jack finds out that Samantha is in danger, and he and Turner end up saving her. While they investigate the source of the conspiracy, they decide to keep her safe from the assassin who is after them. What or who can we put our faith in?

Here's why Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher in the 2012 movie, despite bearing little physical resemblance to the character from the books. The first Jack Reacher novel from author Lee Childs was published in 1997, with The Killing Floor kicking off a series that is still running. The books follow former military policeman Reacher, a hulking nomad who wanders America and helps right wrongs.

The Jack Reacher books kind of read like Murder, She Wrote if the show was fronted by Dolph Lundgren instead of Angela Lansbury. Reacher is a mix of both brains and brawn and isn't afraid to wield either. The popularity of the novels made it inevitable a movie or TV show would adapt the character someday, but Jack Reacher is described as 6-feet-5-inches and weighing over 250 pounds. That made the casting pool somewhat narrow.

While Dwayne Johnson went after the role for 2012's Jack Reacher - based on the novel One Shot - he was rejected as his movie stardom was in a different place at the time. Tom Cruise might be one of the biggest stars on the planet, but both his height (5-feet-7) and his not exactly muscular physique left many fans of the series perplexed. The Tom Cruise Reacher casting announcement was met with some outright hostility online, and continued to be a source of mild controversy during the release of the movie and its 2016 sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back . However, Cruise's casting was the result of a very long process.

Cruise Fit All The Qualities Of Reacher - Bar One

Speaking with The Washington Post in 2012, author Lee Child explained many different names were thrown around for the role. These included Daniel Craig, Russell Crowe, Will Smith and Jason Statham, but none resembled the character as written. The search to find an actor who fit this bill kept stalling the project, and it was only after it was decided to find a performer who matches the qualities of the character - including intelligence and the ability to be intimidating - that Jack Reacher came together.

This eventually led to Cruise being cast, and Lee Child - who cameoed on Amazon's series - vigorously defended the actor's casting at the time. He claimed those who didn't read the books wouldn't be bothered, but " If you do know Reacher, for the first two or three minutes you’re going to think, ‘This is weird .’ But after the first two or three minutes, you buy into it, it sucks you in, and he convinces you ." Actor Alan Ritchson later inherited the part for Amazon's Reacher , which adapted The Killing Floor . Ritchson was a much better fit for the part, and Child later conceded that the readers were correct and Reacher's size was an important part of the character. Regardless, Cruise's brought a genuine intensity and charisma to the movies and brought out Reacher's unstoppable nature in other forms.

Timothy Olyphant stars as Raylan Givens, a deputy U.S. Marshal who instills the law in Lexington, Kentucky. The show lasted for six seasons and received critical acclaim. It even had a short limited series reboot in 2023.

3) Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018-2023)

For another action-packed book adaptation, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is the newest spin on a character once played by Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and Harrison Ford. John Krasinki stars in this four season political thriller about a CIA analyst who's pulled from his desk job and recruited for missions.

4) Bosch (2014-2021)

For viewers who love Reacher 's detective format and want more from the genre, check out Bosch . The Prime Video show follows LAPD detective Harry Bosch and is loosely based on Michael Connelly's novels .

5) 24 (2001-2014)

This high-stakes action show lasted for nine seasons, and even had a television film. Kiefer Sutherland stars as Jack Bauer, a counter-terrorist federal agent. Each season takes place in real-time, over 24 hours, and details Bauer's attempts to stop various terrorist attacks and threats to his colleagues's lives.

6) Homeland (2011-2020)

This major Showtime hit follows CIA officer Carrie Mathison and a Marine Corps scout sniper who enter a cat and mouse game when Mathison becomes convinced he's preparing a terrorist attack. The show went on for 8 seasons and won multiple awards.

Idris Elba stars as a conflicted detective who becomes entangled with a serial killer in this BBC drama. As he works to solve various cases, Luther relies upon the help of Alice Morgan, a serial killer who holds a growing fascination with him.

Reacher fans are celebrating after it was announced which book in the best-selling series would be the basis of the upcoming season 3.

Based on the Jack Reacher book series by Lee Child , the TV series stars Alan Ritchson , 41, as the title character, a self-proclaimed hobo and former U.S. Army military policeman with formidable abilities.

The second season hit screens late last year and quickly broke records for Amazon Prime, becoming its top title of the year in terms of total viewers across all series and films globally.

Last month it was also renewed for a third season .

Now it’s been announced Reacher’s next outing will be based on the 2003 novel Persuader.

While season one centred on Child’s debut novel, Killing Floor, which was published in 1997, the second season jumped ahead and depicted storylines seen in 2007’s Bad Luck and Trouble, which was the 11th book in the series.

The show’s star has now announced the next season will centre on the seventh book.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Alan said: ‘Here comes the big reveal. This year’s book for Jack Reacher takes place in Maine. Persuader is one of the best books there is. I can’t wait for you to see this season.’

The plot synopsis for the novel teases that ‘when Reacher witnesses a brutal kidnap attempt, he takes the law into his own hands. But a cop dies. Has Reacher lost his sense of right and wrong?’

Soon after fans shared their thoughts on social media.

‘Knowing that Prime Video is basing season 3 of Reacher off Persuader, I am beyond excited. The opening blew my mind, and the antagonists are just as awesome. Can’t frickin wait for this one!’ Colton Steiner posted on X.

‘Absolutely fantastic choice, cannot wait,’ Dean Plumley shared.

‘Persuader was the first Reacher book I ever read. The end of Chapter 1 was so so good it had me hooked instantly. I read nothing else for about 5 years. Can’t wait for this. Lee Child is a genius,’ Simon Higgins added.

Before Alan stepped into the shoes of the beloved character, Tom Cruise previously played Reacher in two movies , which were released in 2012 and 2016.

However, after watching the show, fans said the Hollywood heavyweight was the completely wrong casting choice, mainly due to the fact he didn’t fit the character’s profile.

‘Really enjoying Season 2 of Reacher as much as Season 1, intelligent and cleverly written. Alan Ritchson is a physical force of nature, much more suited for the role of Jack than Tom Cruise ever was,’ someone shared on Twitter.

Another added: ‘It’s fantastic and entertaining and far closer to the books characters than the Tom Cruise movies ever were. Let’s keep the Reacher train rolling.’
