We are recently off the Emerald Princess that departed New York City on September 30. This was our second cruise on the Emerald Princess. The first was several years ago to Alaska.

We drove to the pier in Brooklyn on the morning of departure. Getting to the pier was easy using Google maps. We arrived around 10:30. When you arrive by car there is a drop-off area for your luggage. We pulled right in and were met by a porter who took our bags. You then proceed to the parking lot where an attendant has a portable credit card reader, and you pay for the week in advance. Parking at the pier was $45 dollars per day, $315 for the week. There were plenty of parking spaces right next to the ship. From the parking lot it is about a 2-minute walk to the cruise terminal to check in. You can see the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

Embarkation

Once inside the terminal there were plenty of staff who directed everyone where to go. We were both “green lane” upon arrival; however, my wife had her medallion and I did not, mine was shipped but never arrived in the mail. It’s still somewhere in the USPS system. She would have been on the ship in under 5 minutes. I needed to have an old-style room card printed to get on the ship and was told to then go to guest services to get a replacement medallion. That process took about 15 minutes. Guest services made me a new medallion with my name on it after I was on the ship.

The Emerald is an older ship but was very clean and still looked in good shape. Everything seemed to be working as it should.   The exterior of the ship could use some touch up paint here and there.

We had a (BD) balcony cabin in the aft part of the ship. The cabin was very clean and in good condition. Our room attendant was outstanding, she serviced the room twice a day and was always checking to see if we needed anything. Our only issue with the cabin was the annoying motion sensor lights that go on at night. Thankfully because of prior reviews I was prepared with a roll of painter’s tape and covered the sensors. The motion lights are very bright and really light up the room. A couple layers of tape fixed that issue.

We generally ate at the buffet for breakfast and lunch. The buffet area was a little cramped compared to the newer  Princess ships, but the lines moved quickly. The buffet food was good and there was always a good selection to choose from. The handwashing stations at the entrances to the buffet were used sporadically by the guests.

The pizza by the pool was very good.

The main dining room food was good to very good.   The lobster on the second formal night was the best we have had on a cruise. Definitely an upgrade from some of the sad little tails on some previous cruises. We also ate at Sabatini’s one night. The food and service there were excellent.

Service in the main dining room was very good. We ate in all three dining rooms. The Michelangelo dining room in particular had a fun vibe in addition to very good service.

The wait lines to enter the dining rooms were very manageable after the first night. The first night there was a minor wait but much better than another Princess cruise we were on earlier this year.

Newport – Newport is a tender port. We had been to Newport several times before. We opted to take the free shuttle to the mansion area and walk along the Cliff Walk. The free shuttle is located several blocks to the left of where the tenders drop you off. We walked along the Cliff Walk and decided to walk back to town, which was about a mile through a nice neighborhood. We walked around town for awhile and headed back to the ship. The tenders ran frequently and there was never much of a line.

Boston-  The ship docked at 10am. We did Boston on our own. We took an Uber ($18) from the ship terminal to Fenway Park for an 11am tour that we had booked in advance. The one-hour tour was excellent. The tour takes you throughout the park and you learn the history of the players and events that have occurred there throughout the years. After the Fenway Park tour, we took an Uber ($12.50) to the North End. We picked up the Freedom Trail and worked our way back towards Boston Common. We stopped at various places along the way. A highlight was a stop at Mike’s Pastries for cannoli and Italian cookies near the Paul Revere house. There was a line, but it moved quickly. The cannoli and cookies were excellent. Many people in the area were carrying Mike’s Pastries boxes. We also visited Quincy Market and other historical sites along the Freedom Trail. An Uber from Boston Common back to the ship was $12. We found Boston to be clean and very tourist friendly.

Bar Harbor- Bar Harbor is a tender port. We were told that the tenders get backed up quickly so get a tender ticket early. We got our tickets at 8am. We waited over an hour for our number to be called for a tender. The tendering operation at Bar Harbor was not nearly as efficient as in Newport. The tender ride to the dock in town is about 25 minutes. The town of bar Harbor requires large cruise ships to be tucked behind an island, so they are not visible from the town. Princess should have utilized additional tenders or local providers during the peak morning rush. Some people waited much longer than we did.

We booked the 2 ½ hour Acadia National Park tour on Oli’s Trolley. Oli’s is located near where the tender exit is. The scenery on the Acadia tour was fabulous. We made several stops to get out and view different scenic areas. Our driver narrated and pointed out different points of interest along the way. At one spot we had a Bald Eagle fly by for a quick cameo. We lucked out with the weather. It was very clear and unusually warm for early October. On top of Cadillac Mountain, there is an impressive view of the town below.

After our trolley tour ended, we walked around town and bought a few souvenirs from a shop that was having a half price end of season sale. We saw lobster rolls for sale at several places. One place was charging $39 each. We passed on that.

Later that afternoon the tender line to get back on the ship extended far down the street to the tender dock. The line did move a little faster than expected as Princess enlisted a large tour boat to help tender guests back to the ship. Still, the line was very long. The ship left Bar Harbor later than expected. The full tenders were still running past the original posted sail away time.

Halifax- We toured Halifax on our own. In the cruise terminal as you exit the ship there are various shops. There is also an informational center with locals handing out maps. The staff will point out various places of interest and even draw a walking tour map if you ask. We decided to visit the Public Gardens and the Citadel.

The Public Gardens were about a mile walk from the cruise terminal. The gardens were nice, and we spent about a half hour there.

Next, we walked to the Citadel which was nearby. We walked up a very large hill and paid our admission and toured the inside of the fort. The fort overlooks Halifax harbor. Several small group demonstrations were conducted by the Citadel staff. There is a changing of the guard ceremony at the main entrance of the fort at the top of every hour. At noon, a large cannon is shot that can be heard throughout the city.

After the Citadel we walked along the waterfront boardwalk. There are many shops and restaurants along the boardwalk. We ordered a cinnamon/sugar fried dough "Beaver Tail" and sat at the end of a pier to enjoy the water views. The boardwalk leads back to the cruise ship docks.

St John/Bay of Fundy- At St. John we booked the Bay of Fundy Coast to Shore Tour with shoreexcursiongroup.com. We met the tour bus a block from the cruise terminal. Our first stop was the Reversing Falls Rapids. Here we watched the tide going out to sea. The water was really roaring through this area. Next, we drove about an hour to the small fishing village of St. Martins. As we drove, the tour guide narrated and told many stories along the way. We then made a stop at the Caves restaurant. The restaurant overlooks the Bay of Fundy and a large sea cave that was carved into a sandstone cliff. Because it was low tide, we were able to walk out onto the rocky flats and explore. At high tide they are under water. The restaurant serves very good seafood. We had very good seafood chowder. The next stop was in town where you can visit several small shops and see a couple of covered bridges. Because it was low tide, several fishing boats were out of the water on supports waiting for the tide to come back in. Here, the difference between high and low tide can be over 20 feet. On the way back in St John we stopped at the old City Market. There are many inside vendors selling everything from meats and produce to clothing items. We purchased some Canadian candy bars that the local tour guide recommended. The pop up candy shop took US dollars and gave US dollars as change. After the market, we went back to the Reversing Rapids area. The water was now gently flowing as it was slack tide and not roaring through the area as it was several hours earlier. In an hour or so the water would be flowing rapidly in the opposite direction as before. It was very interesting to see. From here, the bus returned us to the ship. At the cruise ship docks there is a Container Village. Here, there are shipping containers that have been painted bright colors and converted into various shops selling things from food, artwork and souvenirs.

At the cruise terminal we were asked by security to show picture ID and our medallions to get back on the cruise ship. This was not required in Halifax.

Entertainment- We enjoyed the various musicians throughout the ship. The quiz shows etc. seemed well attended. We enjoyed the Rock Opera production in the Princess Theater. It was one of the best performances we have seen at sea.

Staff- The staff on the ship were very friendly and helpful. We did have 2 separate occasions at different pool areas where we ordered drinks with a server, and they just never arrived. On both occasions our order was taken, our medallions scanned, and the drinks just never came. We never saw either waiter again after each order to inquire if there was a problem or if they just forgot. It wasn’t a big issue because we had the Plus package and never reached our drink limit. If we were paying as we went, we would have had to go to guest services to have the charges removed.

Disembarkation- Since we drove to the port, we utilized self-assist and wheeled our luggage off ourselves.   There was a small line getting off the ship, but it moved along. Getting through customs was a breeze with facial recognition. We were in our vehicle and on our way home by 8:30am.

Miscellaneous- The internet on the ship was adequate. For the most part we were able to use our phones/iPads when needed to email, text etc. We did enjoy very nice weather for most of the cruise. It was very foggy in St. John, but it never rained. Even though the ship was reported as being full it rarely felt crowded. The only long lines I noticed (besides the Bar Harbor tenders) was at the poolside grill serving hamburgers during lunch. Other than that, things moved easily.

The gym facilities were in very good shape. The different exercise machines were all working and the exercise area was clean and well kept. My wife took a couple of exercise classes and found the instructors to be very welcoming.

Overall- This itinerary has been on our to do list for awhile. We had an enjoyable time once again on the Emerald Princess.

Thanks so much. Good to know the Emerald is still doing well!  👍

Good job on your review!  We were on the Emerald this past July for a Hawaii cruise, one of our favorite Princess ships.

Lady Arwen

Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts.  We’re booked on Enchanted Princess doing the same itinerary in 2024.  Good job!

Very nice review.  I would like to add (too late for this season), that there was an excellent lobster roll container in the village.  Recommendation came from helpful folks inside the terminal.  I would do them again.  Freshly made and delicious.  Sorry photo since I hungrily devoured first half.

Thank-you for your review. Doing this itinerary next October and looking forward to it! Need to start thinking about shore excursions…

Alaska05

Thank you very much for your review.  We will be on the Emerald in 2 weeks doing the same itinerary.  We have not booked any excursions, so it was very helpful reading what you did and costs.

We have done the QC to NY cruise twice and both times the ship was not able to get into Bar Harbor.  Nice to know someone made it.  We also have done the Greenland cruise out of Red Hook a couple of years ago.  In three weeks we are boarding the Emerald at Red Hook and ending at PE with a tour of several Caribbean islands so nice to hear about your time on the Emerald.  Thanks for posting.

Paula_MacFan

Very nice review!  We did this same itinerary 5 years ago on the Regal and reading your review really brought back the memories! 🙂   Thanks so much and glad you had a good time.

@labcoat99 how were they handling drinks while in port in NYC. Was it the drinks package as normal or were they charging tax or did the drink package not kick in until day 2? I have seen different things for different lines and haven't found an answer for princess.

We ordered drinks as soon as we were on the ship.

We had Princess Plus. No additional NYC taxes were charged to our account.

We did this exact itinerary a bit before the pandemic...but we missed Halifax due to high winds.  Just recently did the NY to Quebec City which included Halifax.  We finally got to visit there!

Thank you for your review. I would love to do this cruise one day. Very different ports than what I’m used to. I’ve been to Boston on a land vacation and loved it

Find a Cruise on Emerald Princess

with a cruise advisor

Emerald Princess, which debuted in 2007 and was most recently updated in April 2019, is one of the largest ships in the fleet. It carries up to 3,080 passengers and 1,200 crew members, and it offers balconies in 80% of its exterior cabins. Recent cruisers describe the accommodations as sleek and spacious.

While groups can opt for a Family Suite for more square footage, those who splurge on Suite category cabins are granted perks like specialty dining and priority disembarkation at ports. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs and minifridges. What's more, each guest aboard Emerald Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Activities include duty-free shopping boutiques, the Lotus Spa and a photography studio. In the evenings, theater shows, outdoor movies and multiple lounging areas keep cruisers entertained. The ship also offers age-appropriate youth clubs; in fact, the Camp Discover Youth & Teen Centers were refreshed during the refurbishment. With five pool areas, five whirlpool spas, the reimagined Sanctuary and an abundance of dining venues – including three specialty restaurants – the ship rarely felt crowded (according to most passengers).

Emerald Princess offers a variety of sailings in the Caribbean, Hawaii, California, Canada, New England, Europe and the Panama Canal.

Emerald Princess Itineraries

Emerald princess review, review of emerald princess.

The 2007-built Emerald Princess cruise ship is the 8th Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships the fleetmates Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (now Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Crown , Ruby , Star (now Pacific Encounter) and Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9333151) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310531000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Emerald Princess cruise ship

The 3100-passenger ship Emerald Princess follows the highly evolutionary Crown Princess cruise ship, whose debut took place in March 2006. The vessels are virtually the same in layout and design, so if travelers have sailed on Crown, they will not have any trouble finding their way around Emerald or Ruby (which followed in 2008). But for those who have not traveled on Princess' Grand-class vessels, or for cruisers for whom an Emerald Princess sailing is their first cruise with the line, the ship is going to surprise, and in most cases, delight them with far higher levels of kitchen, service and facilities than passengers would expect on a stylish, mega-vessel catering to over 3000 passengers.

Decks and Cabins

Most Emerald Princess staterooms (1533 total, in 33 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (676). Almost 80% of all outside cabins have a private step-out balcony. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 31. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Emerald Princess features three dining rooms, all offering a tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. Botticelli is for fixed-seating dining, while Michaelangelo and Da Vinci are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Da Vinci also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon.

The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Steamers Seafood (fka Cafe Caribe) and World Fresh Marketplace (fka Horizon Court) look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried bananas.

There is also the Italian-styled Piazza/Atrium, around which are located the International Cafe (with its wonderful coffees and scrumptious pastries, quiche and chocolate fondue); across the way is Vines, ship's wine and sushi bar (it got the only really good wine list onboard).

In January 2016, celebrity chef Curtis Stone teamed up with Princess Cruises for his first-at-sea specialty restaurant serving high-quality, inventive food. Share replaced the signature Italian Sabatini's and introduced new bedding, dining options, entertainment and more. Share is only open for dinner and applies a $39 cover charge. Its menu features five areas from which to select multiple dishes and a charcuterie platter. It's hard to order only one of each, as there are enticing recipes like a twice-cooked duck with fennel, parmesan crumb and bacon jus; or shrimp salad with turnip, citrus salt, brioche and lemon gel.

Share is only found on board Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess , for now. "Crafted by Curtis" dishes are on the MDR menus fleetwide. If you wonder why to pay extra at Share, here are the cool things about the brand new Curtis Stone restaurant which make it worth the splurge. Food like this can't be found anywhere else on the ship.

Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess are simple when it comes to dining venues. Before Share, both ships had three main dining rooms, a steakhouse and a buffet, all of which were average in terms of overall experience and quality. From its celebrity chef to its natural ingredients and perfectly sized portions, you won't find food like Share's anywhere else on the ship.

Perfect for couples and large groups. This space is open, airy and large, with long tables and more intimate seating arrangements. Large groups have enough room to engage and share dishes. Couples can enjoy more peace and quiet. The ambience is upscale, yet not stuffy. Share's family-style dining and chic decor allow guests to dress their best and still feel relaxed. Passengers will feel more like they're in someone's home, talking and passing plates across the table.

Service at Share is second to none. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu and all ingredients handpicked by the celebrity chef's team. According to Stone: "The enthusiasm in that kitchen right now is actually unparalleled to anything I've ever done; they're so energetic and so up for it."

Guests will have room for dessert. Appetizers, entrees and dessert options, complementing a cheese plate, are conservative in size. Passengers will not only expand their palate by picking at multiple dishes but will also be able to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Follows the complete list of Emerald Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Michaelangelo Restaurant (ship's aft Dining Room; dinner only - offers “Anytime Dining” between 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.)
  • Crown Grill (160-seat steakhouse/seafood restaurant, reservations recommended; on select days serves British Pub Lunch, complimentary)
  • Da Vinci Restaurant (ship's forward Dining Room for Breakfast 7-9 a.m., Lunch 12-1:30 p.m., Afternoon Tea 3:30-4:30 p.m.; features “Anytime Dining” for Dinner between 5:30-8 p.m. or 8-10 p.m.)

  • World Fresh Marketplace (fka Horizon Court) is the ship's self-service buffet restaurant (complimentary) on Lido Deck (deck 15/pool deck).
  • Steamers Seafood (fka Cafe Caribe) is an aft self-service buffet restaurant located aft on Lido Deck /pool deck.
  • Pizza & Ice Cream Bar (complimentary)

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Princess Emerald Theater is the main venue on Emerald Princess for comedy acts and production shows with a variety of music and selections appealing to a broad mix of ages. Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians.

The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day. Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Skywalker Nightclub, Princess' trademark, hosts 70s-, 80s- and 90s-inspired nights and a few nights with a variety of modern music.

For low-key dancing, head to the Wheelhouse Bar, which hosts combos playing standards and soft rock.

Emerald Princess 2016 refurbishment review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in 2015 November 30 - December 13) was for general maintenance (no deck plan changes were announced ahead).

However, during the dry dock, an extensive refurbishment plan was implemented targeting ship’s spring-summer 2016 cruises from the UK. The 2016 deck plans changes and news include:

  • Two new premium dining venues were added. The new “Share” is a family-style restaurant by Curtis Stone (an Australian celebrity chef). Its menu features charcuterie (pork meat products) and also homemade pasta. The new “Salty Dog Gastropub” cuisine experience (by chef Ernesto Uchimura) is provided by a classic pub menu offered nightly in the Wheelhouse Bar (on Promenade Dec 7) with craft beers and pub favourites served in small plates.
  • On Deck 16, “Share” replaced the Sabatini’s” – the Italian restaurant, which is also featured on the Princess ships Coral, Ruby and Sun. “Salty Dog Gastropub” was introduced for the first time on the Crown ship (in 2015 October) and will also be introduced on the Ruby ship.
  • Passenger cabins upgrades include the line’s new luxury mattress.
  • Ship’s gym was upgraded with new sports equipment and free weights.
  • 100 cruise staterooms became “family cabins” after being fitted with interconnecting doors.

Emerald Princess Wiki

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built Princess Cruises Emerald ship is from the company's Grand-class series, with (same-designed) sisterhips Crown and Ruby . The other (similarly-designed) liners in this class are Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Sapphire , Star (Pacific Encounter) .

The ship was delivered in March 2007. The christening ceremony was held on May 13, 2017, in Port Piraeus (Athens Greece) . The cruise ship has four godmothers - the actresses Florence Henderson, Marion Ross, Erin Moran and Susan Olsen. The naming ceremony was preceded by the inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) - which is not the common practice. The voyage started from Port Civitavecchia-Rome , cruising around the Greek Isles and other Mediterranean destinations. The ship spent its summer 2007 season in Europe, then was repositioned to Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) for roundtrip Caribbean itineraries.

Emerald Princess refurbishment 2016 review

The ship's last major drydock refurbishment was in 2019 (April 1-14) in Victoria BC (Canada) . The vessel was in drydock in 2015 (November 30 through December 13) initially scheduled for general maintenance works only, and without planned deckplan changes. However, during the drydocking, an extensive refurbishment plan was implemented targeting the spring-summer 2016 voyages out of the UK.

The deckplan changes following drydock 2016 included:

  • Two new premium dining venues were added. The new “Share” is a family-style restaurant by Curtis Stone (an Australian celebrity chef). Its menu features charcuterie (pork meat products) and also homemade pasta. The new “Salty Dog Gastropub” cuisine experience (by chef Ernesto Uchimura) is provided by a classic pub menu offered nightly in the Wheelhouse Bar (on Promenade Dec 7) with craft beers and pub favorites served in small plates.
  • Passenger cabin upgrades included Princess' new luxury mattress.
  • The Gym was upgraded with new sports equipment and free weights.
  • 100 staterooms became "family cabins" after being fitted with interconnecting doors.

The ship's last drydocking was in 2022, conducted at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam in Port Rotterdam (Netherlands) .

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

emerald princess new england cruise reviews

Genteel streets lined with elegant brick town houses, acres of public greens and gardens, more colleges than are found in many states, and a church on almost every corner: Boston serves up slices of history and culture at every turn. Savvy spin-doctors of centuries past have made the town that cradled independence our nation's history and myth capital. More than ever, America's mother city serves up the bold and new with the old and true -- reflecting skyscrapers mirror Colonial steeples, and expressways zip around buildings whose hand-etched look recalls the scrimshaw era. Few places in America display their history so lovingly. Like a multitiered wedding cake, the city of Boston consists of discrete layers. The deepest layer is the historical base, the place where musket-bearing revolutionaries vowed to hang together or hang separately. The next tier, a dense spread of Brahmin fortune and fortitude, might be labeled the Hub. The Hub saw only journalistic accuracy in the hometown slogan "the Athens of America" and felt only pride in the label "Banned in Boston." Over that lies Beantown, home to the Red Sox faithful and the raucous Bruins fans that crowd Boston Garden. This is the city whose ethnic loyalties -- Irish, Italian, Asian, and African-American -- account for its many distinct neighborhoods. Crowning these layers are the students who throng the city's universities and colleges every fall, infuriating not a few but pleasing the rest with their infusion of high spirits and dollars from home. The best part for a visitor is that Boston can be experienced within a day or two. This is a remarkably compact city, whose labyrinthine streets will delight the walker, although they can -- and often do -- push drivers over the edge. An hour's stroll will take you from sites in the North End -- where bewigged icons from dusty high school history books are transformed into flesh-and-blood heroes -- to Beacon Hill's mansions where the Lowells spoke only to the Cabots and the Cabots spoke only to God. You can explore the country's oldest public park, the Boston Common, in the morning, tour a Back Bay Victorian in the afternoon, and in the evening dine on Szechuan seafood in Chinatown or gnocchi in the North End. Even following the Freedom Trail -- a self-guiding walking tour of famous American historic sites -- traverses the layers: historical, Hub, and Beantown. Boston has been first too many times -- the first public library, the first public schools, and the first subway system -- to concede an inch of civic pride to bigger and bolder cities. It still sees itself as a pioneer in culture -- both popular and rarefied. In 1858, Oliver Wendell Holmes -- philosopher and author of The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table -- called Boston "the hub of the solar system"; social inflation, however, soon raised the ante to "hub of the universe." For Bostonians that still feels about right.

Halifax, an Atlantic Ocean port in eastern Canada, is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia. A major business centre, it’s also known for its maritime history. The city’s dominated by the hilltop Citadel, a star-shaped fort completed in the 1850s. Waterfront warehouses known as the Historic Properties recall Halifax’s days as a trading hub for privateers, notably during the War of 1812.

Sydney/Nova Scotia

emerald princess new england cruise reviews

Sydney is a harbour town on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia, Canada. By the water, the Big Fiddle is a huge violin statue honouring local music. Wooden 18th-century buildings include the Cossit and Jost houses, now museums with period furniture. St. Patrick’s Church Museum showcases local history in an 1828 church. East, at Glace Bay, the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum explores the area’s coal-mining heritage.

Charlottetown

emerald princess new england cruise reviews

Charlottetown is the capital city of Prince Edward Island, and is nationally recognized as the “Birthplace of Confederation”. With such a proud history, it is preserving its distinct heritage through historic streetscapes, parks, buildings, culture and pageantry, local festivals, and events. Charlottetown is alive with the buzz of a modern urban center. The city boasts some of Canada's best educational facilities, cultural venues, and economic opportunities. With the Confederation link bridge joining Prince Edward Island to mainland Canada, more and more people enjoy the city's exciting atmosphere. The University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College campuses in several locations, including Charlottetown and Montague, have a wide range of applied arts and technical education programs. Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of “Anne of Green Gables,” always knew she wanted to be a writer. She had various poems and stories published as a young woman and today her stories can be re-lived on Prince Edward Island.

Portland/Maine

emerald princess new england cruise reviews

Portland stands as one of the few working waterfronts left in the United States, acting as New England’s largest tonnage seaport and second largest fishing port. It is also the second largest oil port on the East Coast and the largest foreign inbound transit tonnage port in the United States! Portland is Maine’s largest city with 66,000 full time residents; however it swells to 2 million if one includes annual visitors and part-time residents. Visitors come by car, train, airplane, and boat. Each year our port alone handles over 206,000 international passengers, including 41,000 cruise ship passengers and 165,000 passengers of the Scotia Prince. At every turn, Portland is an experience for everyone.

  1. Emerald Princess Canada/New England Review

One place was charging $39 each. We passed on that. Later that afternoon the tender line to get back on the ship extended far down the street to the tender dock. The line did move a little faster than expected as Princess enlisted a large tour boat to help tender guests back to the ship. Still, the line was very long.
