BS6 Tata Safari 2021 Diesel review: Automatic and manual versions driven
Is Tata Safari a good value? So, let’s cut the clutter and hop on. Let’s find out how this new Safari is or how is the 7-seater version of Harrier.
Right now, we are all discussing the name - ‘Safari’, celebrating the comeback and trying to understand the connection and the legacy of Tata’s iconic Safari. Many enthusiasts are talking about the positives and negatives of naming Harrier’s 7-seater version, Safari. Discussions around Tata vehicles are often a charged discussion on the internet, and so is this. Gravitas to Safari is a great marketing strategy, which has worked for now. We are busy making Instagram stories and reels exploring the Tata Safari family tree and discussing Gravitas lineage. But, after six months this nomenclature won’t matter, the family tree won’t matter. The only question customer would be asking then- is the new Safari worth? Is Tata Safari a good value? So, let’s cut the clutter and hop on. Let’s find out how this new Safari is or how is the 7-seater version of Harrier?
Old Tata Safari Vs 2021 Tata Safari
First, a few elements in this new Safari might remind you of the Safari silhouette or image. The stepped roofline is one of them. Safari’s name is embossed on the roof rail (a functional element in the non-sunroof version and cosmetic in the sunroof one). Rear quarter glass/panel might give you some hint. Then you have bold badging of Safari in the rear. One similar aspect would be the second-row seating.
It feels higher, and with an open sunroof, it gives an airy and commanding view of the road, reminds you of old Safari. The dimensions, body, chassis and architecture are different from the previous Safari, but the sense of space would feel very similar. That’s it. And, one update which disappointed many Tata Safari fans, the 2021 Safari is a two-wheel-drive version. Tata Motors is looking at the customer reaction and promised a 4 wheel-drive Safari in case of demand. Had the company announced a 4WD option of 2021 Safari right at the start, this naming would have been more than a marketing decision. That flagship variant, which would have made the 30 plus Safari fans very happy.

Now let’s get right into that spot which makes the new Safari different from the Harrier. Other than the new chrome finished tri-arrow designed front grille, extra 60mm and 70kg dimensions. The Third Row. This is something we Indians love, and which was missing from this segment. Hector plus is a recent option and XUV 500 is too old now.
Safari’s third row is usable and functional. Legroom for average Indian height would be adequate and for kids, it will be comfortable. The seats are well cushioned and adjustable headrests help. The backrest was good. However, the thigh support could have been better. Third-row seats get ac vents, two USB points and a fan switch. So, in case you are travelling with a big family with kids, this would be a new practical option but, with the third row up, luggage space would be a big issue. Especially if you have the sunroof version where you cannot use the roof rail to put luggage on the overhead carrier.

Like all the new Tata products, this new flagship gets a long list of features like 8.8-inch touchscreen, automatic AC, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, push-button start/stop, cruise control and panoramic sunroof which is named Majestic Skydome. Then comes the latest iRA connectivity suite with list of connectivity and voice command features. You also get a ‘Boss Mode’ for second-row passenger where you can slide the co-driver seat ahead to make more legroom, with the help of just one lever.

The list of safety features in the new Safari includes electronic stability program, hill hold, traction control, rollover mitigation, corner stability control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, all-disc brakes. The top-end XZ variant gets 6 airbags, hill descent control and ISOFIX too.
Tata Safari 2021: Drive and Performance
Tata Harrier’s on-road performance was never an issue as far as high-speed handling and power are concerned. Safari does not disappoint either. There is an improvement on the refinement front and NVH level what we could experience. It was quick and agile. The braking was adequate and high-speed handling was good too. Some extra response from the steering wheel would have made this experience even more complete.
Even with the 2-wheel drive option, Tata Harrier has been a good performer on the off-road terrain. So is the case with Safari. It takes on bad roads and undulations without breaking a sweat. It feels rugged and gives confidence.
Tata Safari 2021: Automatic or Manual?
Now, this was an easy decision for me, the automatic felt more at ease with the engine. The shift was smooth, and it got along well with different drive modes and traction settings. It made the power available throughout, kept me engaged and excited plus comfortable. So, with that kind of shifting, I was not missing the manual transmission which is bit stiff, and clutch still reminds you of the earlier versions.

Overall, Tata Safari is a well-rounded package. Engine performance is good, power delivery is smoother. The automatic version would feel more sorted than the manual, and the driving experience is exciting enough. As far as its USP is concerned, the third-row space is more or less usable. Then multimedia touchscreen, rear camera resolution would need some improvement, but they are not dealbreakers if Tata Motors prices this aggressively. A price tag under 15 lakh, even if only introductory, along with an affordable automatic version price would mean tension for the upcoming XUV500, competition for the Innova, and celebration for Tata Motors.

The 4 diesel-automatic variants of the Jeep Meridian start at Rs. 35.52 lakh and go up to Rs. 39.66 lakh (ex-showroom). The 12 diesel-automatic variants of the Tata Safari start at Rs. 20.69 lakh and go up to Rs. 27.34 lakh(ex-showroom).

The Jeep Meridian and the Tata Safari are both SUVs. The Meridian is 4769mm long, 1859mm wide and 1698mm tall. The Meridian’s wheelbase is 2782mm long. The Safari measures 4661mm long, 1894mm wide and 1786mm tall and has a wheelbase measuring 2741mm. In terms of dimensions, the Jeep Meridian is slightly smaller than the Tata Safari. So, the Safari will offer a stronger road presence than the Meridian.
The Meridian has a ground clearance of 214mm while the Safari has a ground clearance of 200mm. The 233-litre boot space of the Meridian is 214-litres smaller than that of the Safari.

Sound system is outstanding, probably the best in the segment. Once on the highway, it's a smooth cruiser, and the new steering is very well-tuned, sporty on the highway but lighter in the city.
