Recent tour reviews

The gig itself was incredible. Hozier and the family sound as pure and perfect as they do on recordings - it's insane how amazing they are! The engagement with the audience was on point too - Hozier is a warm and welcoming showman, with a definite ear for his audience and a love for performing that shows at every turn.

Kudos to David Keenan for opening the show. He has a unique style that I'm sure will serve him well in the years to come. Purchased the vinyl to play as soon as I got home.

As for City Hall itself, I have never been to watch music before (just stand-up shows or 'An Audience With...' nights) but I have to say, the acoustics are phenomenal. Because of the layout, everything feels intimate and the view was outstanding from most points in the auditorium.

A fantastic night!

I am absolutely in love with Hozier's voice and talent. It was my wish since years to go to his concert. That finally happened in Munich last night.

The location was great. Unfortunately the opening of the concert was far from anything good!

A solo singer (Kevin) who had a powerful voice but could not really be able to have audiences and at some point it got really boring after the second song... He sang 5-6 songs and you could feel that the crowd is getting resltess wants him to finish up and leave.

Then we had to wait for more than 45 min for the band to show up on the stage! I have never been waiting this long in all the concerts attended to so far! We were waiting, they did not bother to give some information or some sign... Finally when the band show up nobody even apologised for such a long delay!

Despite all these, Hozier / band was great on the stage! He sang for 2 hours and almost all the songs I was so looking forward to hearing them live! I do hope to see them again but this time with much better time management and organisation!

was out of this world, best night of my life. one drawback was when andrew encouraged people to leave their seats and come down to the stage, but the venue staff turned everyone away when they tried. was pretty disheartening and upsetting but didn't let it ruin my night.

andrew and the band were in top form, and got everyone out if their seats and standing and singing along (society has so beaten everyone down in terms of expressing themselves and caring what everyone else thinks that even among a thousand people who loved one man and his music, we found difficult to show it.) so thanks andrew for not taking us at face value (a theatre full of blinking goldfish in their seats for the first few songs, forgive us, i know that i was pretty overwhelmed. and i already have huge issues with confidence without adding 1k+ people to the mix)

love you hozier, hope to see you soon, and even meet you next time <3<3<3

Concert Review: Hozier - Unreal Unearth Tour

hozier tour history

Hozier burst onto the mainstream music scene when his debut single, “Take Me To Church,” was released in 2013 and quickly dominated the music charts. I fell in love with his music the first time I heard his voice, and my obsession with him hasn’t diminished at all in the past ten years. His talent is absolutely undeniable; from his vocal range, instrumental skill, and incredible lyricism, his studio albums and live shows are mesmerizing.

I attended the November 1st date of Hozier’s Unreal, Unearth World Tour, named after his 2023 album of the same name. The concert was in Phoenix, Arizona at the Arizona Financial Theatre, where I had seen Hozier on his last tour in 2019. That show was one of my final shows before the Covid-19 Pandemic began. Like everyone, so much of my life has changed since then, but I have never lost my love for Hozier and his music. In times of so much uncertainty, one of the small joys I had at that time was getting in my car and blasting my favorite Hozier songs out of my stereo.

I was so excited to walk into one of my favorite venues to see him for another sold-out show. Madison Cunningham was his opener for this tour and I was blown away by her talent. I had never listened to her before, but the confidence and power in her vocals overtook the entire venue. Her voice has a delicate softness to it that takes listeners back to the early days of music. It is easy to imagine her songs being played on a vintage record play but that is not to say they are boring. She effortlessly took each song to new heights with her impressive range and crystal clear high notes. If you didn’t know she was opening for Hozier, you would have believed it was a show entirely of her own. By the time her set was over, the entire audience was simultaneously wanting more of her music and restless to get to the main event.

hozier tour history

When Hozier came out, I, like everyone in the venue, absolutely lost my mind. He started his set with De Selby (Part 1) and De Selby (Part 2) before launching into my favorite song ever, Jackie and Wilson. I refused to look at any spoilers online for the tour prior to my show, so this was an exciting surprise. I danced and sang my little heart out like there was no one else in the room.

The stage visuals tapped into the fantastical theme of the night, with a large, bare tree skyline descending above the stage. Behind the band, projections of stormy skies, sunrises, and starry fields complemented the colorful lights illuminating the stage and kept our eyes glued to the stage.

The audience was alive with the rush of guitar and Hozier’s dazzling stage presence. He played a mix of songs from all three of his studio albums without missing a single beat. With the help of his amazing band and backup vocalists, he had the crowd dancing one minute and shedding tears the next. When the fan-favorite (yet misunderstood) Cherry Wine came on, we were all put into a melancholic trance as Hozier lamented about love gone bad.

He allowed the music to do most of the talking for him, saving his voice in between songs until he reached I, Carrion, a song about the myth of Icarus. Before starting the song, he connected the mythical origins of this song to the mythical origins of the city of Phoenix, stating how much he loves it for its name. “If you’re familiar with the story of Icarus… Well, I imagine you all are. It’s Phoenix, right? I guess he [Icarus] didn’t come back though, right, when he burned up?” He said. The talk of mythic stories continued as he asked for the spotlights to be pointed at the upper level seating. As those of us on the floor turned to look, he compared the fans up in those stands to “the Gods of Mount Olympus.”

hozier tour history

As the night began to wind down, he played one of my other favorite songs, Damage Gets Done, in a breathtaking duet with backing vocalists, Melissa McMillan. The song is originally a duet with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, but McMillan’s voice did not disappoint. Every note reminded me that I’m young and alive with a full journey ahead of me to live. Since its release, this song has inspired me to enjoy my youth as long and as fully as possible, and hearing it live made me feel like I could do anything.

To end his initial set, Hozier played his hit single, Take Me To Church. The love and appreciation he has for that song is evident each time he plays it live, and I am happy that it has stood the test of time over the past 10 years.

hozier tour history

After a brief break, Hozier and his band came back for an encore, starting with Nina Cried Power, a song calling for action and praising generations of activists from around the world. Before beginning the song, Hozier spoke about the heartbreaking war against Palestine and encouraged the audience to contact their local representatives and government officials to call for a ceasefire. Bravely, an audience member before me raised her Palestinian flag as the song began. Constantly practicing what he preaches, Hozier’s shows always feel safe and welcoming to all.

For his final song, Hozier played the ever-romantic Work Song in a duet with Madison Cunningham . Another one of my favorites, I got lost in the dreamy tune and lyrics of the song before he took a bow with his band members and walked off stage.

Seeing Hozier live is an experience like no other. With incredible vocals, stage presence, and musical ability, he puts on a two-hour show that is impossible to dislike. I am so grateful to have seen him again. His albums have truly made me who I am and have carried me through so much. I can't wait to see him again in the future and make many more memories at his shows.

Hozier, King of Whatever You Need Him to Be

The lyrical musician talks about the romanticism and art of his latest album, Unreal Unearth

hozier unreal unearth tour 2023 nashville, tn

Ten years after the release of “Take Me to Church,” the Irish singer is selling out arenas. What does that feel like for him?

“It feels really, really encouraging,” Hozier admits over Zoom, from his tour bus in Louisville. It is mid-September, and he is in Kentucky for the Bourbon & Beyond music festival. “I think the fact that these tickets were sold before the album was out was super encouraging to me, too. People didn’t really know what the new album was going to sound like, and they were still ready and really wanted to show up.”

hozier performs at cardiff castle

Hozier (full name Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) is notoriously careful about his private life, but has revealed that several of the songs from Unreal Unearth are the results of a breakup and other personal losses he’s experienced over the course of the pandemic. He worked the album largely around the concept of Dante’s Inferno , the epic poem about the 14th-century Italian poet’s journey through the nine circles of Hell. “Francesca,” one of the singles, is based on a character from the second circle (for sinners guilty of lust) who was, in turn, based on Francesca da Rimini, a real-life medieval noblewoman who fell in love with her husband’s younger brother, Paolo. A modern power ballad, the song is an ode to love’s occasional recklessness—daring, devoted, braggadocious, and unrepentant. Hozier croons and then belts his passion. The eroticism of the line “I’d tell them, ‘Put me back in it’” electrifies the song, which ends with a hypnotic choral round that includes the avowal “Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I.”

The sacrilegious power of love is a common theme throughout Hozier’s catalog, but Unreal Unearth is his most intimate album yet. You’d be hard pressed to get him to open up to the public about any details beyond the lyrics themselves, but does he ever try to fight against personal inspiration to avoid fan scrutiny?

“I think the art filters through all sorts of different layers of sediment and rock until it filters out of the spring,” he says. “It goes through all sorts of different filters that are psychic and emotional. So I think the ultimate question is … does the work feel honest to me? And I can’t really consider all too much more than that.” If he needs to check in with someone about the content of a song, he does, but he’s much more concerned about authenticity than about parasocial detectives.

Hozier may find comfort in maintaining a certain level of mystery. Earlier this year, a Spotify user shared a playlist titled submissive men !! that featured four Hozier songs, including “NFWMB,” from his 2018 EP Nina Cried Power . The musician finds his inclusion on the playlist “interesting” and raises his eyebrows at the idea that he might have some songs out serving as theme music for all the subby boys out there.

“I think I’m glad most people don’t know me all that well,” he says. “Sometimes I think the negative space between me and the actual me and fans is filled with very, I think, attractive descriptions of myself or attractive imaginings of myself.”

.css-1mkv557{font-family:NewParisTextBook,NewParisTextBook-roboto,NewParisTextBook-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.75rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;padding-left:5rem;padding-right:5rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1mkv557{padding-left:2.5rem;padding-right:2.5rem;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1mkv557{font-size:2.5rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1mkv557 b,.css-1mkv557 strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1mkv557 em,.css-1mkv557 i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;} “The art filters through different layers of sediment and rock until it filters out of the spring.”

But he does agree that “NFWMB,” which stands for “Nothing Fucks With My Baby,” is a good choice for such a playlist. It’s about a lover who stands by your side at the end of the world and includes a verse full of arousing viciousness: “If I were born as a blackthorn tree / I’d want to be felled by you / Held by you / Fuel the pyre of your enemies.” Hozier concedes: “There’s great dedication in that song. It describes a kind of an outrageous admiration and dedication towards a figure, and it kind of describes a very terrifying person in the best way. So yeah, ‘NFWMB,’ I can agree with you.”

He also understands that listeners will hear and interpret what they will. “Ultimately, the listener finishes the piece in some way, shape or form. They bring their experience to it, and their experience bridges the gap between themselves and the song,” he says. (Justice for everyone who’s used “Cherry Wine” —whose gentle, romantic melody belies a story about intimate partner violence—as their wedding song.)

That said, he doesn’t want his music used for causes he doesn’t support. “What I’m concerned [with] is if it gets co-opted for something that’s harmful or deliberately harmful,” he says, his voice becoming firmer with his conviction. For as many love songs as Hozier sings, he is equally committed to social justice and calling attention to inequality and oppression. In “Butchered Tongue,” from Unreal Unearth , he highlights the colonialist practice of forcing indigenous peoples to abandon their mother languages. He also directly references pitchcapping , an ancient form of torture famously used by the English to put down the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Pointing out the atrocities of the world is as important to him as declarations of undying love.

“I'm very interested in Irish history, but I find that Irish history– it’s one little microcosm of something that happened across the world, you know what I mean? And so my understanding, the history of my place, where I come from—it informs my understanding of imperialism, of global imperialism, and it informs my understanding of global power structures,” he says. “They’re part of my psychic makeup, just from what I understand of my own country’s history, my own nation’s history. … It colors the lens, as it were, with how I see the world.”

Hozier’s 2018 single “Nina Cried Power” featured legendary Black singer and activist Mavis Staples. It’s an anthem dedicated to the legacy of social protest. In June 2020, he donated the royalties from “Jackboot Jump,” a song that mocks military and fascist response to protest, to the NAACP and Black Lives Matter, in response to the death of George Floyd. It’s impossible for Hozier to ignore such injustices, especially when people misuse his name to try to justify their biases.

That summer, as the United States reeled from the brutality of Floyd’s death at police officers’ hands, the Hozier 24/7 fan group on Facebook began deleting comments that referenced the killing, Black Lives Matter, or anything else “political” (a.k.a. Black). In response, Hozier himself tweeted a light scolding . It’s baffling that anyone could listen to his work—which is directly inspired by and frequently pays homage to Black music—and decide to ban what is ultimately a discussion of Black life.

Hozier seems to agree. “I felt like I couldn’t, in good conscience, not intervene into what would seem outrageous to me in a way, or just seemed deeply insensitive,” he says. He knows the problem isn’t confined to this one incident or this one fan group and appears frustrated by the need to reiterate the respect and love he has for Black artists.

“This is kind of part of the wider thing … I can talk about my influences being of Black artistry. It’s mentioned all the time. It is in the work. It’s literally in the work … and it’s just something that is not taken seriously,” he says.

Black fans have often taken to social media to express their own frustration at how white fans conveniently ignore Hozier’s tributes to Black artists, praising him instead as a ridiculously tall forest elf from a magical land far, far away. But Hozier says it’s natural for him to pay homage, to take care of the work he’s built his own on.

“It just seems strange that it wouldn’t be part of the conversation,” he says. “And it’s so fundamental to my influence. I named the songs after Black artists, and the work is signposted constantly back to it. I just try to be honest with it as best I can, and try to approach that conversation with the spirit of honesty and openness.”

That open approach is a part of his appeal. Hozier’s poetic lyricism can be emotionally devastating. The night after a show in support of Unreal Unearth , I went to a bar with a friend. A bottle of rosé deep, I got choked up, wondering if anyone would ever love me enough, or ever be so inspired by love as to dedicate a song as beautiful as “To Someone From a Warm Climate (Uiscefhuaraithe)” to me. The song is a special gift Hozier wrote for someone who had never experienced a cold winter, and references the Irish word for “the feel of coldness only water brings.” His voice moves between the dips and swells of his range as he sings it, and every time I hear the song, I have to figure out new ways to keep my heart inside my chest. The sensual vulnerability of Hozier’s music is at its peak in this song.

Unreal Unearth is his most musically and emotionally textured work so far. It may have been inspired by Dante’s Inferno , but the album is more like Pandora’s box. In the midst of all the ways it show us that love and greed can leave us devastated, it still offers hope that arriving on the other side of it all, into the light, will be worth it.

Hozier

This fall, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is hitting the road for a full U.S. tour — his first outing post-pandemic. Following a handful of warmup dates at smaller venues stateside and overseas, his Unreal Unearth tour (in support of his long-awaited third album, of the same name, released Aug. 18) will bring him and his new backing band to iconic venues from coast to coast for some of his biggest shows to date.

Hozier Heading for Debut U.K. No. 1 With ‘Unreal Unearth’

Expanding his show (and setlist), trending on billboard, celebrating his heritage.

“This is the first time that I’ll be singing songs in the Irish language or singing parts of songs that are in Irish Gaelic. So I’m really excited to [play] Madison Square Garden or Hollywood Bowl, and sing in Gaeilge [the Irish language]… and watch as, hopefully, concertgoers and fans learn those lines and maybe even sing it with me.”

Fawning Over His Opening Act

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Madison Cunningham — how astoundingly skillful she is on her instrument, and inventive. I think she represents one of the most talented creative forces of our generation. I’m honored she’s on these shows and that I get to hear her music every night and watch her do her thing.”

Hozier announces Australian tour for November

Hozier, a man with long dark hair, looks at the ground with despondent expression. A sunset is behind him.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Irish star Hozier has announced his first Australian tour in five years, locking in a string of dates at massive venues around the country this November.

The 'Take Me To Church' singer has had a big 12 months, releasing his third album Unreal Unearth to an incredible reception from fans and critics alike. He also teamed up with singer-songwriter du jour Noah Kahan for a track, undoubtedly convincing even more people to worship at the altar of Hozier.

Now he returns to Australia for the first time since his raved-about 2019 tour to play his biggest shows over here to date.

This November the singer will play five massive headline shows in capital cities around the country, while also stopping by a few seaside areas to be a part of a new run of the much-loved Summersalt festival shows.

Fans have been anticipating his return for some time, and given he looks to be playing about 50 million shows this year before he gets to Australia, he is likely to be in scintillating form by the time he makes it here.

Joining him on the run around the country is American singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun , whose fourth album Proof Of Life was another of 2023's greatest folk-leaning albums, once again showing the strength of her voice and writing, and including friends like Kahan, Chris Stapleton, and Manchester Orchestra in the mix.

An evening with both Hozier and Oladokun is bound to be a heart-filling experience for music lovers around the country.

Catch him playing the following shows, presented by Double J.

Wednesday 6 November – RAC Arena, Perth

Friday 8 November – The Drive, Adelaide

Tuesday 12 November – Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne

Friday 15 November – Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney

Monday 18 November – Brisbane Riverstage

He also plays the following Summersalt Festival dates:

Sunday 10 November – Summersalt, Torquay

Saturday 16 November – Summersalt, Hunter Valley

Hozier has continued to hook audiences worldwide with his provocative, energetic, and organic live performances that span his extensive decade-long catalog of hits. Hozier’s unique connection with his audience has grown more apparent over the years and stems from the enduring intimate nature of his shows. His dedicated following of die-hard fans quickly showed their enthusiasm for his third studio album, Unreal Unearth , learning the lyrics to the songs through his live performances and singing along to every word prior to the release.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Hozier tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Hozier will bring his ‘Unreal Unearth’ tour to Australia in November 2024. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

CONCERT REVIEW: Hozier Soars To New Heights During Captivating Amsterdam Show

hozier tour history

In a tremendous display of musical excellence, Hozier transcended his already soaring popularity in The Netherlands, captivating a massive audience of 17,000 at the illustrious Ziggo Dome. It was a monumental leap from his previous performances in the country, which had seen him command stages before 6,000 fans at the AFAS Live . This exponential growth in his fan base over the past few years attested to the undeniable charisma and musical brilliance that define Hozier’s artistry.

The evening promised an extraordinary experience from the outset, with a last-minute switch in the support act that saw the talented Birdy taking the stage. Despite the challenge of limited preparation time, Birdy’s performance was nothing short of enchanting. Her ethereal voice and adept piano skills resonated through the venue, setting the stage perfectly for the main event.

As Hozier , flanked by his skilled band, emerged under the spotlight, a palpable energy coursed through the audience. From the opening chords, a symbiotic relationship formed between the artist and his fans. The crowd eagerly participated in sing-alongs, rhythmic clapping, and the iconic sea of flashlights that illuminated the arena during the soul-stirring rendition of among others “ Icarus ,” where Hozier , armed only with his guitar, delivered a poignant and stripped-down performance.

The concert unfolded like a carefully curated journey, seamlessly weaving through slower ballads and high-energy anthems. The backdrop, adorned with mesmerizing nature-inspired displays, added a visual layer to the sonic spectacle. Each song was a chapter in an evolving narrative, punctuated by Hozier’s soulful vocals and the collective heartbeat of thousands of fans.

Approaching the climax of the set, Hozier , in a gracious gesture, stepped back, allowing his band members to shine individually. Their musical interlude was met with thunderous applause, a testament to the collective talent that comprised the ensemble. As Hozier reemerged into the spotlight, the opening chords of “Take Me To Church” echoed through the arena, eliciting an enthusiastic response from the audience. This iconic track, a cornerstone of Hozier’s discography, had become an anthem for many, amassing a staggering 2.2 billion streams on Spotify alone.

The resounding applause that followed resonated with the enduring impact of Hozier’s music. It was a moment that underscored the timelessness of a song that had served as the gateway for countless fans into the world of Hozier . The magic of hearing an anthem of such magnitude being sung by 17.000 voices was a testament to the communal power of music.

As the final notes echoed through the venue, it was evident that Hozier had not merely performed; he had orchestrated an immersive and unforgettable experience. The success of the evening was a microcosm of Hozier’s broader trajectory, a trajectory that seems destined for even greater heights with the recent release of his new album, ‘ Unreal Unearth .’

In the hearts and minds of the audience, the hope lingered — a hope that Hozier would soon grace The Netherlands with his musicality once again, forging new memories and further solidifying his place as a musical luminary. The night at the Ziggo Dome was not just a concert; it was a testament to the enduring power of an artist who, with each performance, etches his name deeper into the fabric of musical history.
