We applaud Alaska for not succumbing to the temptation to put up a green-and-white sign similar to other states'; its wooden welcome emblem is something you'd actually want to pose with in a photo.

Arizona's flag and its most recognizable tourist landmark—that would be the Grand Canyon—are the focal points of its interstate signs.

Did you know that Arkansas's nickname is "The Natural State"? If you've crossed the state's borders, you should: The moniker—a reference to its plethora of mountains, lakes, hot springs, and more—is right there on the welcome signs.

Instead of using a more recognizable symbol on its state signs—like the coastline, or an orange, or something like that—California's DOT instead chose to add a poppy, the state flower, to its highway signs.

Colorado's cheerful, rustic signs (there are 40 throughout the state) have become landmarks in and of themselves, with each one weighing about 150 pounds.

Connecticut may be full of surprises, but this welcome sign—a plain blue-and-white number—is not one of them.

Delaware's sign is nice and all, but in this case, we can only think of Wayne Campbell: " Hi…I'm in Delaware. "

Florida calls out some its most recognizable state symbols—the palm tree and the orange—on its welcome signs. (No Mickey Mouse, though. Huh.) The state DOT plans to replace these signs with bigger and more photogenic ones by 2015.

"Georgia On My Mind" is the official song of the Peach State, so it's only fitting that a snippet of the lyrics (along with a fuzzy peach) ended up on its welcome signs.

Indiana's nickname, "The Crossroads of America," is a reference to the fact that several major interstate roads passed through the state. And thus, it ended up on its highway signs.

Kansas’ new tourism tagline as relevant as ever

There is a special irony in unveiling a new state tourism tagline amidst a global pandemic that’s grounded flights, canceled trips, and shuttered travelers in their homes.

But in a providential twist, the new tagline happens to be exactly what we need--a celebration of perseverance in the face of adversity.

I’m pleased to share the new tourism marketing tagline for Kansas is “To The Stars.” This tagline honors and builds upon the state’s motto, Ad Astra Per Aspera, translated “to the stars through difficulty.”

To The Stars

To The Stars reminds us who we are and shows us where to go. It is a salute to the free-spirited. To the rowdy. To the wide-eyed wanderers. To the dreamers. To the stars.

In the upcoming year, we plan to continue the To The Stars campaign with stories and features that capture imaginations and inspire travel. For Kansans and travelers eager to show their state pride in a new way, there is stylish new gear emblazoned with To The Stars designs available now at TravelKS.com .

A lot of us are not going far these days, but we still have the chance to embrace the horizon-expanding benefits of travel by exploring fantastic experiences just down the road.

Video Thumbnail - youtube - Kansas Tourism Industry Virtual Huddle June 17

Kansas is home to many revered destinations such as the Brown v Board of Education Historic Site in Topeka, and the newly renovated Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum in Abilene . We can put those spots on our bucket list as they slowly phase in reopening protocols, as well as finding other ways to explore the To The Stars ideal while maintaining physical distancing.

Take a hike in the Flint Hills and experience the untouched landscape the same way early settlers did. Travel the Santa Fe Trail and imagine coming through in a wagon in search of a better life. Visit Little Jerusalem , the newest jewel in the Kansas state park system, and learn about the dedicated efforts to make it a public land accessible to all.

These are just a sampling of what Kansas has to offer travelers searching for new inspiration and fortitude. Kansas history is rich with people who stopped at nothing to chase their dreams and stake out freedom for themselves and others. There’s plenty of room to roam under the stars and learn how historical figures lived out our state motto. Just be sure to practice safe travels, bring a mask, and check in advance for the most up to date operating information from each stop on your bucket list.

Even though we’re experiencing unprecedented challenges, the answer has been inscribed on the heart of Kansas all along. We will make it through by not giving up. We will keep our eyes toward the sky even when trouble surrounds us. We will push forward To The Stars.

Ohio's returned to its old tourism slogan, here's why

tourism state tagline

Ohio is, once again, the heart of it all.

Gov. Mike DeWine announced a new − or, more accurately, old − tourism slogan for the state Wednesday: "Ohio, The Heart of it All." The state first used this slogan to attract visitors to the Buckeye State in the 1980s but retired it in the early 2000s.

"We are returning to something familiar," DeWine said in Cleveland Wednesday. "We are Ohio, the heart of it all."

The slogan will replace "Ohio. Find it Here," which was first announced in 2015 during Gov. John Kasich's administration .

"Ohio. Find it Here" was easily turned into a critique by those frustrated with the state's politics or policies. On social media, the "it" you can find here in Ohio ranged from potholes and "Hell is Real" signs to discrimination and corrupt politicians. (One of the state's most powerful Republican lawmakers was recently convicted in a sweeping bribery case .)

Before "Find it Here," Ohio had two tourism slogans. "Ohio, The Heart of It All" was first used in 1984 during Democratic Gov. Richard Celeste's administration, and "Ohio, So Much to Discover" promoted the state in the early 2000s during Republican Gov. Bob Taft's tenure.

TourismOhio's focus has recently shifted from solely attracting visitors to the state's attractions to also attracting people to come live in the state. Ohio's population growth has slowed, costing the state a congressional seat after the 2020 U.S. Census.

"What we're promoting is more than just a travel destination. We are promoting all of our great state, holistically," DeWine said in Cleveland Wednesday. "We also want them to know that this is a great place to live, a great place to work and a great place to raise a family."

The slogan comes with a new ad featuring the song "Must be the Love" from Akron soul band Wesley Bright & The Honeytones. Columbus-based Ron Foth Advertising designed the new logo.

The announcement came on Ohio Tourism Day, which was also celebrated at the Ohio Statehouse with booths touting Ohio's tourism attractions. Inside the building, House lawmakers prepared to vote on a measure that would ask voters to make it harder to amend the state constitution . Another committee discussed a bill to ban transgender girls from participating in female sports .

From 'I Love New York' to 'Say WA'

While every state has a tourism slogan, not all of them have stood the test of time. New York's "I Love New York," Virginia's "Virginia is for Lovers" and West Virginia's "Wild, Wonderful West Virginia" have lasted decades.

But others were quickly panned. Washington state's "Say WA!" was dumped shortly after it was announced. "Oklahoma is OK" was ultimately not OK with many residents. And Wisconsin's "Stay Just a Little Bit Longer" was considered a bit clingy.

Can Ohio's slogan compete with its neighbors? Michigan has "Pure Michigan," Pennsylvania markets itself with "Pursue Your Happiness” and Kentucky has pitched its "Unbridled Spirit." Last year, Indiana announced a new marketing campaign: "IN Indiana."

Ohio's state motto is  " With God, All Things Are Possible ," the brainchild of young Cincinnatian Jimmy Mastronardo in the 1950s. The American Civil Liberties Union challenged the motto in court, arguing that it was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. But a full appeals court decision sided with Ohio and the motto.

State Tourism Slogans: Key to Success or a Waste of Time?

Samantha Shankman, Skift

April 3rd, 2015 at 2:03 PM EDT

Even if consumers don't recognize a state tourism slogan, its ability to facilitate the organization of the state's tourism industry around a single theme or message should help boost the destination's long-term branding and attractiveness.

Michigan is pure , Louisiana is passionate , and Virginia is for lovers , according to the state tourism slogans adopted and promoted by these states’ tourism boards.

Almost every state has a tourism slogan, a two- or three-word line that hopes to capture the spirit of a destination, but their ultimate role in attracting visitors is open to debate. The sometimes-million-dollar campaigns built around the slogans can be a lynchpin for a state’s marketing efforts, but do consumers really care or even know the personas that states are pushing?

Testing Awareness

To test the awareness of the general American consumer, we took one of the oldest and most famous of state tourism slogans, “Virginia Is For Lovers,” and asked 500 random respondents through Google Consumer Surveys to identify the state associated with “is For Lovers.”

Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 11.28.27 AM

Older respondents, aged 55 to 64, were the most likely to correct choose Virginia while younger respondents, aged 18 to 24, were the least likely. This is an interesting data point given the considerable focus that brands have on millennial travelers.

Given the underwhelming response to our survey, we sought out state tourism boards that have put significant efforts into building and spreading their slogans. Although each consider the slogan an integral piece of their marketing make-up, there is no proven method for measuring and testing their continued effectiveness.

Tourism leaders (below) from Virginia, Michigan and Louisiana share their experiences developing and maintaining their slogans.

State’s Branding Lessons

“Virginia Is For Lovers,” for example, was developed by an agency in 1969 and remained the the state’s slogan for the past 45 years. In that time, it’s become a part of the state’s overall branding, co-opted by local businesses and even merchandized.

“The accrued value of 45 years as a tourism slogan is almost immeasurable,” says Thad Smith, Virginia Tourism ’s brand director. “The slogan tends to be used organically, in conversation — it has become part of the fabric of Virginia. It represents equally the entire state.”

The tourism board continues to measure the efficacy of the slogan through visitor input, but it has in many ways taken on a life of its own.

Michigan’s tourism slogan, “Pure Michigan,” is just shy of a decade old and an agency likewise created it. Ad agency McCann Erickson spent three years conceiving and refining the concept before winning the account in February 2006. It continues to evaluates the slogan based on travel to Michigan, traveler spending in Michigan, return on advertising investments, and consumer surveys.

Just as important as a slogan drawing visitors to a destination is an ability to internally organize an organization’s marketing strategy and tone behind a single concept or message.

“When we launched the campaign in 2006, we underestimated the power that a good campaign could bring to the travel industry and the DMOs (destination marketing organizations),” says David West, vice president of Travel Michigan .

“The Pure Michigan campaign became a rallying cry for the entire state and offered the opportunity to align our partners and the industry underneath one core idea: Pure Michigan. All of a sudden, everyone was singing from the same song sheet and delivering consistent message.”

Louisiana, on the other hand, spent significantly less time and money on the creation of its tourism slogan, “Pick Your Passion.” Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne created the slogan and logo quickly upon his appointment with the goal of driving traffic to Louisiana Travel’s  website , where consumers can research and plan trips based on their passions.

The organization last evaluated the effectiveness of the slogan in July 2014 and found recognition and positive response rise to 75 percent in an RRC Associates poll.

But there’s more to this state than just its breathtaking scenery. Montana is a state that’s been associated with one of the most notorious criminal cases in American history – the Unabomber.

The Unabomber, also known as Ted Kaczynski, carried out a string of bombings that spanned nearly 2 decades, leaving a legacy of fear and intrigue.

This dark chapter in Montana’s history adds an element of mystery to its vast landscapes.

But there’s another aspect to the slogan: “Very Little Else.” It speaks to the perception of Montana as a state with minimal development or urbanization.

When you find yourself surrounded by the vastness of Montana’s mountains, plains, and rivers, it’s easy to feel a sense of connection to nature that is increasingly rare in our modern world.

4. “The Last Best Place”

A House Middle of A Large Land in Montana

Montana is a land of untamed landscapes, rugged mountains, and vast expanses of preserved wilderness that beckon travelers from far and wide, earning it the enchanting slogan “The Last Best Place”.

Towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains reach towards the heavens, their snow-capped summits glistening in the crisp mountain air.

Rolling plains stretch as far as the eye can see, adorned with wildflowers that dance in harmony with the gentle breeze.

Crystal-clear lakes and meandering rivers carve their way through the land, teeming with life and offering sanctuary to those seeking solace.

But Montana’s allure goes beyond its picturesque landscapes. It is a place steeped in the spirit of independence and self-sufficiency.

A place where the idea of community runs deep, and neighbors lend a helping hand without hesitation. This palpable sense of togetherness creates a tight-knit bond among Montana residents that is rare and cherished.

Montana remains one of the few remaining bastions of uninhabited, well-preserved beauty left in the United States.

5. “Montana: The Unabomber State”

RV Park in Montana

One particular aspect of Montana’s history and reputation captures my attention – its connection to the infamous Unabomber. Theodore Kaczynski.

Ted Kaczynski is a twisted genius with a penchant for constructing untraceable bombs, unleashing a reign of terror upon unsuspecting victims.

For nearly two decades, the FBI and its investigative partners embarked on a relentless pursuit to bring this elusive lone wolf bomber to justice.

It was in 1978 that Kaczynski’s sinister antics first came to light, as his homemade bomb detonated in Chicago.

This was only the beginning of his heinous spree, which spanned a staggering 17 years, claiming the lives of 3 innocent individuals and leaving many others injured in his wake.

But it was in the heart of Montana that the Unabomber’s reign of terror ultimately came to an end.

On April 3, 1996, investigators discovered the hideout they had long been searching for – Kaczynski’s secluded cabin in Montana.

Within its walls, they unearthed bomb components, revealing the chilling evidence of his nefarious activities. Alongside these menacing artifacts, Kaczynski’s journals provided a chilling insight into the mind of a disturbed individual.

And there, in the depths of the Montana wilderness, law enforcement finally apprehended the elusive Unabomber. Since that fateful day, Montana has been forever tied to the dark legacy of the Unabomber.

The impact of this connection reverberates through the state’s history and reputation. It serves as a stark reminder of the duality that exists within even the most picturesque landscapes.

6. “EZ 2 LUV”

Montana Mountain with Lots of Grass

Montana captures the essence of its allure with the slogan “EZ 2 LUV”.

From the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains to the vast expanse of its rolling plains, Montana is a dreamscape waiting to be explored.

This catchy slogan perfectly encapsulates the feelings that this extraordinary state evokes in its visitors and residents alike.

With its natural wonders and welcoming communities, falling in love with Montana is an experience that comes naturally.

7. “Montana – Unspoiled, Unforgettable”

In 1988, the State Tourism Advisory Council in Montana adopted a slogan that has stood the test of time: “Montana – Unspoiled, Unforgettable”.

This state, with its unspoiled landscapes and natural beauty, is truly a place that leaves lasting impressions.

Montana’s pristine wilderness is a sight to behold. From the towering, rocky mountains to the foggy valleys, every corner of this state is a masterpiece of nature’s own creation.

But it’s not just the landscapes that make Montana unforgettable. It’s the experiences that await you around every bend.

Whether you’re embarking on a thrilling adventure, like white-water rafting on the rapids, or simply immersing yourself in the warm atmosphere of a small, welcoming community, Montana offers something for everyone.

8. “Get Lost (in Montana)”

Man Alone in a Montana Forest

One slogan that has helped tourism in Montana grow is “Get Lost (in Montana)”.

This catchy phrase, first used by the Montana Department of Commerce in 2012, perfectly captures the essence of this magnificent state.

At first glance, you might think that the slogan encourages tourists to lose their way in Montana’s wilderness.

But its true meaning goes much deeper. “Get Lost (in Montana)” is an invitation, a call to explore and immerse yourself in all that this remarkable state has to offer.

No matter where you find yourself in Montana, there’s always something incredible waiting to be discovered.

9. “The Treasure State”

City in Montana

When it comes to Montana, there’s more to this state than meets the eye.

It’s not just the breathtaking landscapes and captivating vistas that make it remarkable.

No, it’s the hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface that truly embody Montana’s essence. That’s why it’s called “The Treasure State”.

At first glance, you might think this slogan is just a catchy phrase.

But, in reality, “The Treasure State” is Montana’s official nickname, proudly displayed on license plates and embraced by locals and visitors alike.

This nickname captures the spirit of Montana’s rich mining history and its abundance of natural resources, including gold, silver, and copper.

Montana’s moniker “The Treasure State” definitely serves as a reminder of the wealth that once flowed through the state and the valuable destination it continues to be.

10. “Land of Shining Mountains”

Montana Mountains with Good Weather

This captivating slogan, intertwined with the very fabric of this state’s identity, refers to the awe-inspiring, snow-capped peaks that grace the iconic Rocky Mountains.

But the Land of Shining Mountains is not just a poetic ode to the natural landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see.

It also alludes to the rich minerals that have been discovered and mined within these majestic mountain ranges.

Montana’s history is deeply rooted in its treasure-laden earth, with fortunes in gold, silver, and copper being unearthed from its rocky embrace.

Montana, the Land of Shining Mountains, beckons you to experience its unrivaled splendor.

11. “Travel Montana”

Hiking in Montana

“Travel Montana” is one of the state’s captivating tourism slogans, inviting adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts to embark on a journey like no other.

With this enticing phrase, Montana beckons you to delve into its vast expanse of natural beauty, discover its hidden treasures, and create unforgettable memories.

From the majestic Rocky Mountains to the enchanting trails that wind through its expansive territories, Montana offers a wealth of awe-inspiring landscapes that are waiting to be explored.

'Must Be The Sunshine' replaces 'Your Florida Side Is Calling' as official state tourism slogan

  • Robert Trigaux

After three years, Florida's ad campaign -- an example is shown above -- leveraging the phrase "Your Florida Side Is Calling" will be retired. A new slogan was unveiled at the annual governor's conference on tourism in Orlando.

Wake up and good morning . So long, "Your Florida Side Is Calling." Welcome aboard, "Must Be The Sunshine."

Do state-created tourism slogans matter? They do if they can catch the public's attention and create some buzz out there. Think of the blockbuster slogans "I love New York" that's been around since the 1970s or "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" which last year joined the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame. ( Read more here .)

Visit Florida , the state's tourism marketing arm, retired its "Your Florida Side Is Calling" catchphrase on Thursday and unveiled "Must Be The Sunshine" in its place. I'm not sure New York or Vegas have much to worry about. But it's a safe, mainstream saying for Florida.

According to this Orlando Sentinel report , tourism experts also brainstormed at Thursday's annual governor's conference on ways to convince more tourists visiting to Florida to stay one more night. The payoff could be big: an extra $1.9 billion in added spending int he state and the creation of 30,000 more jobs.

As the Sentinel story states, Visit Florida plans to pare down Thursday's ideas to one winner just as they do on the entrepreneurial business-pitch TV show "Shark Tank" -- by competition.

Nebraska tourism slogan is no more. ‘Everything has a shelf life,’ official says

The tagline, ‘nebraska, honestly it’s not for everyone,’ stirred criticism from some, including gov. pillen, by: paul hammel - february 5, 2024 10:26 pm.

LINCOLN — Frankly, it was a state tourism slogan that wasn’t for everybody.

On Monday, the Nebraska tourism director announced publicly that it was ditching its edgy, 5-year-old tagline: “Nebraska, honestly it’s not for everyone.”

Officials said the slogan was successful in getting previously uninterested travelers curious about visiting Nebraska, but it  had also been criticized  — including by Gov. Jim Pillen — as reinforcing the state’s lack of soaring mountains and ocean beaches.

‘Thing of the past’

“It’s a thing of the past,” John Ricks, director of the Nebraska Tourism Commission, told members of the Legislature’s budget-writing Appropriations Committee on Monday.

“Times change. Everything has a shelf life,” added David Fudge, executive director of North Platte’s Nebraskaland Days festival.

Nebraska tourism

Ricks made the revelation during a public hearing in which he requested an increase in spending authority for his commission, from $7.4 million to $10.5 million, to increase marketing of visiting the state.

“We want to keep pounding in Chicago,” Ricks told senators.

Funds for more marketing

The Windy City and Oklahoma City were targets of new state marketing campaigns in the past year that, he said, were financed by federal coronavirus funds.

The increased spending, Ricks emphasized, would be financed by a combination of state lodging taxes and surplus tourism commission funds, not tax dollars.

The marketing, however, won’t include the tagline: “Nebraska, honestly it’s not for everyone.”

Motto increased interest

Ricks said the motto was successful in increasing interest in visiting the state, saying that a survey of tourists in the target market for Nebraska showed interest rising from 19% in 2019 to 39% more recently.

He said that when he was hired 7½ years ago, Nebraska suffered a publicity problem. It ranked last among states that tourists were interested in visiting. It had a reputation as flat, boring and a long way across.

“The only way we could get their attention, honestly, was by agreeing with them, and then counteracting it,” Ricks said.

That led to billboards showing groups of happy people riding down a Sandhills stream in a livestock tank with the headline: “Lucky for you there’s nothing to do here.” Or a billboard of hikers hopping between rock formations at northwest Nebraska’s Toadstool Park with the line, “Famous for our flat, boring landscape.”

Pillen slammed slogan

In the last “Portrait of American Travelers” report last fall, Ricks said that Nebraska had risen to a tie for 41st — up from 50th — as a state travelers were interested in visiting.

But Pillen slammed the slogan during his recent State of the State address, calling it “nonsense” and a barrier to recruiting new residents to the state.

Dropping the slogan comes as a proposal is being considered in the Nebraska Legislature to transfer the now-independent Tourism Commission back under the control of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

Fudge, who was testifying for both the state travel and hospitality associations, called that move “backwards.”

The commission, he said, was moved out of DED a decade ago because its work in promoting the state’s third largest industry was being lost amid a large bureaucracy.

The decision to drop the tagline came last fall, Ricks said, before the governor’s public dart.

Ricks added that most of the criticism of the tagline wasn’t coming from out-of-state visitors, but from Nebraska residents, or former residents, who considered it a putdown, which wasn’t the purpose.

The Appropriations Committee took no action on the request to raise the Tourism Commission’s spending authority after the public hearing Monday.

Division of tourism launches new tagline celebrating spirit of Kansas

The Kansas Tourism division has announced a new "To The Stars" tagline that...

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has introduced a new tourism marketing tagline and campaign honoring and celebrating the perseverance that defines what it means to be a Kansan, officials said.

The new tagline – "To The Stars" – builds upon the state’s motto, "Ad Astra Per Aspera," which means “to the stars through difficulty.”

In a news release, Kansas Tourism director Bridgette Jobe says the new “To The Stars" tagline "reminds us who we are and shows us where to go. It’s a salute to the free-spirited. To the rowdy. To the wide-eyed wanderers. To the dreamers. To the stars.”

Jobe says stories and features will be posted in the coming year on the Kansas Tourism website, TravelKS.com, building on the "To The Stars" theme.

Officials with the tourism division said travelers are encouraged to learn about the perseverance that embodies "To The Stars" displayed by Free Staters in the war against slavery; dust bowl farmers; Santa Fe Trail pioneers; Amelia Earhart; Nicodemus settlers; President Dwight D. Eisenhower; astronomer Clyde Tombaugh; plaintiffs in the 1954 Brown v Board of Education landmark Supreme Court case; Greensburg residents following the 2007 tornado that destroyed a large part of their community; and many other notable Kansans who charged ahead despite adversity.

More information about these historical figures, including places to visit to learn about them, can be found on the Kansas Tourism blog and at TravelKS.com.

“Like many of us, the travel industry in our state and nation is experiencing unprecedented challenges amidst the global pandemic,” Jobe said. “‘To The Stars’ is as relevant as ever for Kansas, and now we have a chance to learn more about, and take hold of, the fortitude that has forged our state by visiting sites that commemorate them.”

The Division of Tourism is encouraging #SafeTravels, which includes physical distancing while exploring Kansas’ wide spaces and unspoiled beauty.

“Everyone is looking for what they can do with their family this summer, and fantastic experiences are waiting just down the road in Kansas,” Jobe said. “Take a road trip to find a new adventure – whether that’s a visit to the Fort Scott National Historic Site to learn more about Bleeding Kansas, a hike at our newest state park Little Jerusalem Badlands, or traveling to buy local beef from a producer and seeing Kansas along the way.”

Nebraska tourism slogan is no more. ‘Everything has a shelf life,’ official says

LINCOLN, Neb. ( Nebraska Examiner ) - Frankly, it was a state tourism slogan that wasn’t for everybody.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

How florida and arizona supreme court rulings change the abortion access map.

Selena Simmons-Duffin

Selena Simmons-Duffin

Hilary Fung

In a few weeks, Florida and Arizona are set to join most states in the southern U.S. in banning abortion. It's a significant shake up to the abortion legal landscape, and data shared exclusively with NPR maps and quantifies what the changes will mean for millions of Americans.

On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court cleared the way for an 1864 law to be enforced. That law completely bans abortion except when someone's life is in danger. Last week, the Florida Supreme Court made its decision to allow a ban on abortions after six weeks gestation to take effect on May 1.

Caitlin Myers , an economics professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, has been tracking abortion facilities and travel distances since 2009. She analyzed how these latest rulings will affect the access map.

"Because of these bans, it's about 6 million women of reproductive age who are experiencing an increase in distance of more than 200 miles," she says.

She points out that Floridians who are seeking abortions after six weeks will have to travel nearly 600 miles to North Carolina, which has a 72-hour waiting period. "So we're talking about a day's drive to a state that requires you to engage in this multi-day process," Myers says. "A lot of people might end up going several hundred miles further to Virginia."

For people in Arizona, after the 1864 law takes effect, "their nearest destinations are pretty long drives. They're going to be facing hundreds of miles to reach southern California, New Mexico, Colorado," Myers says. "I think Arizona spillover is likely to affect California in a way that California hasn't yet been affected by bans."

Myers helms the Myers Abortion Facility Database . She has gathered data about facilities – including clinics, doctors, and hospitals that publicly indicated that they provide abortions – going back more than a decade, using data licensure databases, directories, and Wayback Machine captures of websites from years past. She uses a team of undergraduate research assistants to periodically call facilities and make sure the information is up to date.

Numbers of abortions rise in Florida, decline in Arizona

Although Florida and Arizona have historically both been politically purple states and both have had 15-week abortion bans since 2022, the states have been on different trajectories when it comes to abortion and play very different roles in their regions.

There were about 12,000 abortions in Arizona in 2023, according to the Guttmacher Institute , a research organization that supports abortion rights. Out-of-state travel accounted for 3% of abortions in the state, and the overall number of abortions has been declining there in recent years, Guttmacher finds.

By contrast, there were nearly 85,000 abortions in Florida in 2023, according to state data , just a few thousand fewer than Illinois, which has positioned itself as a haven for people seeking abortions in the post- Roe era. And the number of abortions happening in the state has been on the rise. "The majority of the increase has been driven by out-of-state travel into Florida because of bans in surrounding states," explains Isaac Maddow-Zimet , a Guttmacher data scientist. "That really speaks to the role that Florida has played in the region where there really aren't many other options."

The Alliance Defending Freedom, which brought the case in Arizona, frames those affected by the new laws in a different way. "We celebrate the Arizona Supreme Court's decision that allows the state's pro-life law to again protect the lives of countless, innocent unborn children," the organization wrote in a statement this week .

Even with new bans in place, there are a few ways residents of Florida and Arizona will be able to access abortion without driving hundreds of miles. People with means will be able to fly to states where abortion access is protected. Others will be able to use telehealth to connect with providers in those states and receive abortion medication in the mail – a practice that has been growing in popularity in recent months. Telehealth medication abortions, though, could be curtailed by a pending case before the U.S. Supreme Court. (A decision in that case is expected this summer.)

In Florida, some will be able to get abortions before the six-week gestational limit, which is about two weeks after a missed period. "Folks have a really narrow window in order to meet that gestational duration limit if they even know about their pregnancy in time," Maddow-Zimet of Guttmacher explains. "And that's something that's particularly difficult in Florida because Florida requires an in-person counseling visit 24 hours before the abortion."

'A substantial barrier'

Many thousands of people in Florida and Arizona will be unable to navigate those options and will carry their pregnancies instead, Myers says.

"It's easy to think – if an abortion is so important to somebody, they will find a way, they will figure it out," she says, but research on people seeking abortions illustrates why that's not always possible. "[Many] are low income. They're in very difficult life circumstances. They're experiencing disruptive life events like the loss of a job or breaking up with a partner or threatened eviction. Many of them are parenting and have difficulty obtaining child care." One large study showed about 80% of people seeking abortions had subprime credit scores.

"If you think about all that, it is perhaps not so surprising that the results of my research and other people's research shows very strongly and unequivocally that distance is a substantial barrier to people who are seeking abortions," Myers says.

Mary Ziegler , a law professor and historian of reproductive rights at the University of California - Davis, says it's worth noting how these states both came to have new bans. "The common denominator is conservative state supreme courts reaching decisions contrary to what voters would want, interestingly, in an election year when those judges are facing retention elections," she says.

Voters in Florida will have a chance to weigh in on abortion access in November, when an amendment to their state constitution will be on the ballot. An effort to put an abortion amendment on the ballot in Arizona is also underway. Abortions rights opponents in both states have pledged to fight the measures.

Travel: Prehistoric drawings can be seen in Ohio at Leo Petroglyphs

Carvings at Leo Petroglyphs show an array of designs.

Humans have always been eager to leave a creative mark on the world, tangible evidence of an artist’s thoughts or actions that might educate, entertain – or perhaps bewilder – current and future generations.

Humans hadn’t even made it to the Americas when the earliest-known cave paintings were created more than 40,000 years ago in what is now Indonesia.

But, millennia later, prehistoric Americans did make their mark. Ohio has several sites where early artists or scribes left enduring evidence of their creativity.

Spring getaways: State Park lodges make perfect destinations for families, couples

The state’s most well-known group of petroglyphs – prehistoric stone carvings – is probably Leo Petroglyphs and Nature Preserve in Jackson County, about 75 miles southeast of Columbus. (The site gets its name from the nearby village of Leo, not from one of the prehistoric artists.)

A large slab of relatively soft sandstone served as a canvas for the artists, who probably belonged to the Fort Ancient culture, a people who also may have created Ohio’s Serpent Mound (not to mention the earthworks for whom the culture is named).

Among the carvings are figures that seem to represent people, human footprints, birds and other animals, and a few enigmatic symbols.

Whether or not the carvings were meant to represent specific ideas, instructions or just the creative musings of the carvers is still a matter of speculation.

Erosion of the carvings dates their creation to around 1,000 years ago. Today, the carvings are protected by a modern shelter house that also provides a roof for visiting picnickers.

The nature preserve at Leo Petroglyphs protects about 20 acres, including a gorge where stone outcroppings contain other stone carvings.

A ½-mile trail makes a loop around the gorge, beginning and ending at the shelter house.

The wooded hike takes about 30 minutes and provides a glimpse of the kind of landscape that might have inspired those early artists along their way to and from the petroglyph stone.

Another well-known and easily visited example of early Ohio petroglyphs is at Inscription Rock on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie.

The rock, on the south shore of the island near the Kelleys Island Ferry landing, was partially buried when discovered by early settlers in 1833.

More: 7 small Ohio towns and villages perfect for your next day trip

The site is probably not as old as the Leo Petroglyphs, dating from perhaps 800 years ago.

Although Inscription Rock is also protected by a modern shelter, the rock has been so eroded that it’s hard to clearly see the carvings today. But an informational display at the site includes a depiction of the stone from a drawing made in 1850, showing more strange and enigmatic figures, animals and symbols that should provide a satisfying puzzle for any aspiring amateur archeological cryptographers.

Visitors to Kelleys Island should also be sure to visit Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve , an example of Mother Nature’s own artistry, carved by massive boulders dragged by glaciers during the last Ice Age.

Travelers who find themselves fascinated by ancient rock carvings should consider a trip to the American West, where several large sites display a vast array of petroglyphs covering a vast span of history.

One of the most popular and accessible destinations is Petroglyphs National Monument , just a few miles outside downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, where visitors can see one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America.

Short trails lead visitors past designs, both strange and familiar, carved into volcanic rocks strewn about like cyclopian Legos.

The carvings at the national monument are probably a bit younger than the Ohio sites and are credited to both Native Americans and early Spanish settlers from between 400 to 700 years ago.
