'It's a matter of time before we do even better' - Uno-X kicks off historic 2023 with stage win at Saudi Tour

Norwegian team is heading to the Tour de France, but first Søren Wærenskjold won its first race of the year on Wednesday

Søren Wærenskjold

Søren Wærenskjold might have just won his first professional victory, and his Uno-X team’s tenth at elite level, but he is in no mood to bask in his moment of glory. Instead, he wishes to look forwards, to predict great things for his nascent Norwegian team.

“I think it's just a matter of time before we do even better,” he explains at the finish of stage three of the Saudi Tour . “I think we just have to continue what we're doing as we know that it works.

“We just have to get the details correct, like when we did everything right in the final today.”

For the last couple of years the squad has been a favourite of peloton watchers, always trying something, highly visible in the yellow and red kits, keen to not just sit back, or simply be there, as so many Pro Teams have done in the past.

This is something that Wærenskjold’s directeur sportif, Leonard Snoeks, is keen to stress.

“Now, stepping up on the biggest stage, we're not just here to show up,” he says, hours before his rider proved his point. “We want to look good, but we also want to win. We brought some new riders in, some new riders came up from the development team, and it's all part of the plan of getting closer towards our goal.”

2023 is a big year from the Norwegian squad, which is made up of Norwegians and Danes, the news broke in January that Uno-X were one of the recipients of two wildcard spots for the Tour de France , the team’s first Grand Tour, and the biggest one of all at that.

“Every race we go to we're aiming for a win, here, or even the Tour de France . We're not going on holiday,” Snoeks explains. “I think we have a really good shot with some of our top class riders, and of course, they need backup from the other guys. It is a good journey from the development team to the top. We have many riders who are capable of winning.”

Wednesday proved that Uno-X can mix it with the best teams, carry out a plan, and challenge at the sharp end of races. Saudi Arabia is rather different from Norway in January, but the squad showed their spirit and togetherness, and Wærenskjold was there to finish it off.

“I just knew that it was a bit of a steep climb,” the man from southern Norway says. “It was steep at the end before it went downhill again. I surfed a little bit to get back into the peloton to save myself for the sprint. I knew when the guys went really hard at the bottom I couldn't follow, so we did it perfectly. Today we took the right side, so we finally got the wind from the left. We did really badly at the end yesterday, and we learned from that, so today we did it.

“We have two fourths in the first stages, so it's been really good, creating good morale for the team. We try to continue to do well, and tomorrow it's Jacob's [Hindsgaul] turn, so I think he can do well in that climb. Today he was one of the leadout men. It's going to be exciting for the rest of this week now.”

The results have been coming. It is clearly a close knit bunch, helped by the shared Norse heritage of all the riders; if the Vikings ever got into cycling, it would be Uno-X.

“It's a really good atmosphere in the team, and since we are all Norwegian and Danish, we come from the same cultures, and we're quite the same,” Wærenskjold says. “We have fun on travel and training camps, and then we have a good time on the road.

“Hopefully there are some young guys watching that will get inspired, and considering cycling.”

The 22-year-old is one of 12 riders aged 23 or younger on the team, and won the under-23 time trial world championships last year in Australia, at the same time as his compatriot Tobias Foss won the elite title. He was also third in the U23 road race, a hint of his talent to come. However, this was his first pro win.

“It's fantastic,” he says. “I waited for this for some time, and I haven't been so close. I've been good at under-23 level, but haven't managed to take a pro win, so this is really fantastic.”

He is not alone. Tobias Halland Johannessen won the Tour de l’Avenir, the race which so often predicts future talent, in 2021, and the team has signed Alexander Kristoff for 2023 to help push onto the next level.

This is the start of the biggest season in Uno-X history, and Wærenskjold has proved that he is an integral part of it, next he just needs to prove that he can keep this form up, and get into that Tour de France team.

“I think I can be a good leadout man for Kristoff in the sprints, but I have to prove that I can do longer stage races,” he explains. “I have to do well in the Spring, and then we will see if the management tells me I'm strong enough. Hopefully, but we will see.”

Winning a first professional race is a solid first step.

Team presentation 2024: Uno-X remains true to itself and continues to grow stronger

Cycling: The Uno-X Pro Cycling Team is well on its way to the WorldTour. The Norwegians will compete in their first Tour de France in 2023 – but they want more. They want to take the next step next season with promising transfers.

Uno-X makes Norway proud

The Uno-X Pro Cycling Team started years ago with the intention of promoting Norwegian cycling. Even if this mission can already be considered a success, the Norwegian team is far from having reached the end of its development. In the 2023 season, 17 victories were achieved with a total of 50 podium finishes. With Soren Waerenskjold they accompanied and developed their first real world star. The 23-year-old is solely responsible for his team's six wins this season - and they certainly won't be the last. But an oldie was also able to achieve great success in the Uno-X team jersey. alexander kristoff won a stage each at the Volta ao Algarve and the domestic Tour of Norway. Also drew attention Tobias Johannessen. The 24-year-old came second overall in the Tour of Britain and was extremely aggressive in his first Tour de France. We can also expect a lot from him in the future.

2024: Kulset, Leknessund & Cort

A few years ago, the sporting leadership of the Uno-X team made it clear that the ultimate goal was promotion to the WorldTour. With their participation in the Tour de France and their strong performances this season, the Norwegian team has underpinned this plan. The transfers for next year show that they are really serious. With Magnus Court They have brought an experienced man into the team who can achieve success on almost every profile - perhaps with the exception of time trials and high mountains. He is also loyal, down-to-earth, reliable and ensures a good atmosphere in the team. So you can confidently speak of an absolute royal transfer. The same applies to the future Johannes Kulset. The 19-year-old comes from the Uno-X Dare Development Team and is considered one of the biggest talents in road cycling worldwide. However, he still has to follow his statement “One day I want to win the Tour de France” with action. Andreas Leknessund also joins the team. The 24-year-old wore the pink jersey for several days at this year's Giro d'Italia and ended up eighth overall. He is also considered a great talent, even if some experts suspect that he has already come very close to his performance limit.

Weather at the start/finish city of Stavanger at 1:55 PM, local time: 12C (54F), cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 15% chance of rain.

The race: Stage three's neutralized start was at 11:55 AM. There were three non-starters: Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Alexander Richardson & Jack Rootkin-Gray (both St. Piran). That left 109 starters. Late in the stage Shane Archbold (Bora-hansgrohe) abandoned.

Here's the report from second-place Tobias Lund Andresen's Team DSM:

Monday’s final day of racing at the Tour of Norway saw the peloton take on a 151 kilometre route, starting and finishing in the town of Stavanger. It was a fast start to the day with lots of attacks before a nine rider group eventually snapped the elastic and went clear. With all Team DSM riders in the peloton, focus remained on staying safe and saving energy for the finish circuit which included a short but punchy climb.

Working well as a group, the team stayed well positioned and kept fast finisher Tobias Lund Andresen safe ahead of the last lap, where the break was caught. On the climb, Lund Andresen managed to follow the best and things regrouped somewhat at the front, with the bunch charging towards a sprint finish in Stavanger. It was a fast and nervous finale but the young Dane navigated the twisting roads well and could sprint from a great spot. Giving his all to the line, he was just bested from Kristoff, taking another strong second place finish.

The Tour of Norway's final stage gets started.

With no major shakeups in the overall standings, Marco Brenner ended the race in tenth place on GC for the team – his first top ten in the overall classification, with Lorenzo Milesi not far behind in 13th – which was also his first top 15 in the GC standings as a pro.

Speaking after the stage Lund Andresen said: “Today there was a lot of panic in the peloton because of the snaking roads, so there could be echelons at any time. We were always together as a group and the guys kept me safe. On the laps it was crazy with all that road furniture, but the boys tried to stay as close to me as possible and keep me towards the front. I felt really good so I was joining the jumping on the climb in the last couple of laps and could was well positioned. In the sprint, Kristoff was just a little bit faster and it was a close second place for the second time in three days in the end.”

Weather at the finish city of Stavanger at 1:50 PM, local time: 12C (55F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 26 km/hr (17 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Ben Tulett's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Ben Tulett extended his race lead at the Tour of Norway with third place in the uphill sprint on stage two.

The young Brit clawed back key ground in the final kilometres and timed his effort well on the ramp to the line in Stavanger, taking third place and four bonus seconds. Thibau Nys (Trek-Segafredo) won the stage to claim his first pro victory.

The result saw Tulett's overall lead extend out to a still slender five seconds over team-mate Magnus Sheffield. Sheffield hit out early in the sprint and placed eighth, to make sure of a Grenadiers 1-2 heading into Monday's finale.

Once again the team worked well to help control the race and breakaway at times, including over the snow-lined Knuttjørn pass.

Ben Tulett: "It was really tough to be honest. We had a fight on our hands from the beginning to control the breakaway and make sure we were happy with the situation.

"We had a really difficult mountain pass which was also quite cold, but beautiful. It was really nice to see that. Then obviously a super difficult final to this stage. I was actually out of position coming into the final couple of kilometres so I had work to do to get back into position. I’m really happy to come away with third place today. Another day done.

"Here there are no easy days. We have to be up for it and for sure we’re motivated to finish this off in a good way."

Weather at the finish city of Hovden at 1:45 PM, local time: 8C (47F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 16% chance of rain.

The race: Bad weather forced the race organizer to shorten the stage from the planned 206 kilometers to 82.5 km.

Due to adverse weather conditions with freezing temperatures and heavy rain, today’s Tour of Norway stage was shortened to 85 kilometres and instead started in Røldal. Climbing from the flag drop, it was an intense day in the saddle with several attacks and a strong pace set in the peloton; becoming more a race of attrition. No group was able to build up a substantial lead and heading onto the shorter but steeper second climb Lorenzo Milesi put in a strong attack which caused a reaction in the peloton, thinning out the group even more.

Well represented in the reduced peloton with five riders, Team DSM rode cohesively as a unit on the tough parcours and under grizzly weather conditions but the day seemed destined to come down to a reduced group sprint. On the slight descent before the kick up to the line the bunch was strung out through some wet and sharp corners, with Tobias Lund Andresen moving up well and following the wheels. Coming out and delivering a strong kick, he almost made it past everyone on the drag to the line with only one rider managing to hold off the fast-finishing Dane who took a very respectable second place on the stage.

“Today was super short and intense,” explained Lund Andresen. “We started straight into a long climb with attacks from the bottom and later there was a hard but controlled pace. After the first climb we came together and entered the steep one in a good place. Lorenzo went for a strong attack which put on a high pace, making a big split in the peloton with only a couple of fast guys left in the group, including myself. The finish was super hectic with wet sharp corners and in the end I had really good legs, but just not enough metres in the end to come around for the win.”

Weather at the the race city of Bergen at 2:35 PM, local time: 11C (51F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9mph). There is an 80% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Ben Tulett's Team INEOS Grenadiers

Ben Tulett got the Tour of Norway off to the best possible start with victory in the opening time trial prologue, leading home a Grenadiers 1-2 finish.

The Brit blitzed the final climb to take victory with a time of 14 minutes and 28 seconds, crossing the line just one second ahead of team-mate Magnus Sheffield.

That was enough to move him into the early race lead, with three more stages to race ahead of the finish on Monday.

Five Grenadiers placed inside the top 20 times on the day in what was a strong and consistent start to the race. Josh Tarling (17th), Connor Swift (19th), Leo Hayter (20th) and Luke Plapp (47th) rounded out the results on a good opening day.

Ben Tulett: "We knew it was going to make for a really hard time trial today. Of course it meant that the execution was really crucial. We came yesterday to look at the course and we identified pretty quickly that it was going to be really tough. We knew we were in for a fight today but I’m happy with my performance so far.

"It’s something different to do it on road bikes but quite fun. It looks like it’s going to be a hard week of racing.

"I didn’t really know [what to expect]. I just went out there and tried to do my best to see where I ended up. There are some really strong time trialists here like Magnus who are super strong. I knew I was in for a hard fight but we’ll see where I end up.

"We’re definitely motivated for this race and all excited and up for it."

No wins, but lots of pride for Uno-X in Tour de France debut

First ever Norwegian team in Tour "learning that the opportunities are there"

Tour de France: Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) leads the breakaway on stage 19

Right until the sound of popping champagne corks could be heard in Paris, the eight Uno-X riders clattered down the stairs of the bright yellow and red team bus each morning in their first-ever appearance at the Tour de France with a tangible air of quiet satisfaction and pride at what they have achieved.

From veteran sprinter and Classics star Alexander Kristoff , 36, to 2022 U-23 World TT champion Søren Wærenskjold, 13 years his junior, Norway's first team to participate in the Tour have not won any stages – their pre-race goal.

However, their fighting spirit has seen them a lot of praise from experienced rival team managers such as Rod Ellingworth of Ineos Grenadiers , impressed with the way the Norwegian Pro Continental squad is finding their way in the world's biggest bike race.

Highpoints have included former Tour de l'Avenir winner Tobias Johannessen , 23, taking third in the Cauterets stage and a sixth at Courchevel. Jonas Abrahamsen was also part of the four-man breakaway that fended off the bunch at the finish in Bourg-en-Bresse earlier this week and Kristoff also notched up a sixth place in one bunch sprint in Moulins in the second week.

Jonas Vingegaard crowned Tour de France champion in Paris Uno-X get new sponsor and kit for Tour de France Tour de France Femmes: Lotte Kopecky goes solo to win stage 1

Uno-X team sports director Gabriel Rasch pointed out to Cyclingnews that the key thing is that the team are not letting themselves be overly impressed by the fact they are rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest squads on the planet, and that so far they have been keeping themselves in the thick of the action nearly every day.

"Obviously we're a small team coming here, and we have hopes and expectations of a stage win," Rasch said.

"But the way our guys have been riding, the way we've been attacking the stages… we have had many top tens and we still have eight guys here, all healthy. So overall, it's gone much better than expected."

Rasch said two key takeaways for 2024 have been established.

"We've learned that there are definitely opportunities we can take, for one thing. Secondly, we've been telling the guys since the start to save energy and I think now, after 18 days, they understand why," he says with a half-smile in the interview which took place during the final week. "So that's another lesson."

"We have been smart in the way we're riding, we've held the guys back and told them to save energy."

Rasch, speaking ahead of Saturday's brutal mountain stage then pointed to it as a way that may suit Johannessen, who indeed ended up coming ninth.

Rasch's admiration for his team's ability to defend themselves on all manner of terrain and in a race where they are fighting with the top names becomes clear when asked how many times he has had riders coming back to the team car complaining about how hard the Tour is.

"To be honest, not so many. They're a bit blown away by the level of the top two guys [ Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar ] but on the other hand, on a stage like the Col de la Loze and going over the Tourmalet a guy like Tobias has really been up there. In those finales, he has been up against the best. That's really promising for the future."

At the other end of the spectrum, Rasch has been impressed by Kristoff's racing as well, although he admits that as a collective, their lack of experience in the Tour sprints could have cost them and so too did using up too much energy to get into position.

"The best day was when he got sixth at Moulins, that could have been amazing because he was coming up with a good speed. But on some days we've fallen a little far behind coming into the last three or four kilometres, and then afterwards Søren Wærenskjold and Alex have been able to move up. But when when they get there [to the front] they've already been on the limit.

"So they arrive, but all the while the other sprinters have been freely drifting a bit. So that's at least one reason why the sprints haven't worked out."

The team showed that they also had varied options for a fast finish on the Champs Elysées, with Wærenskjold crossing the line in eighth place on Sunday's finale.

But it's not just in the high mountains and sprint stages where Uno-X have been active. In the third-week breakaways stages like Thursday, Abrahamsen finished third behind Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep) and on Friday Anthon Charmig and Rasmus Tiller were both in the big break of 32 through the foothills of the Jura.

"We thought that Thursday it'd be 50-50 for the break or a bunch sprint, but then Kasper and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) timed it well, staying a minute ahead until Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto-Dstny) got across and made it four in the move," Rasch explained.

"Even up to 20 kilometres to go, it looked like a bunch sprint, but then when Alpecin started running out of guys, it all began to change."

Abrahamsen and Tiller had both been planned for the break, he said, "but we initially hoped it'd be a bigger move. Abrahamsen, though, is very keen, he always wants it. If you tell him to be in the break - it doesn't matter how many people are in it, he'll be there."

That kind of upbeat attitude is typical across the board at Uno-X in the Tour this year, though, Rasch says, and apart from offering them some real high points, it's all great fuel for a potential return to the race in the future.

"It's gone so much better than we expected – and off the bike too, we've got a good atmosphere in the team, a good group feeling. So that's another really good reason to hope, too, that we'll have an invitation for next year as well."
